Summary Photosynthesis-irradiance relationships and the carbon metabolism of different ice algal assemblages collected from Weddell Sea pack ice were investigated during the EPOS 1 cruise. Infiltration- and interstitial assemblages exhibited the photosynthetic characteristics of high-light adapted ice algae with a mean assimilation number of 1.81±0.93 mg C (mg Chl a)–1 h–1. A higher light harvesting efficiency under light limited conditions (alphaB-value), as well as a lower light intensity for light saturation (IK-value) was determined for the interstitial assemblage. An increase in light intensity from 3.5 to 106 mol m–2s–1 resulted in increased synthesis of polymeric carbohydrates (presumably reserve material) in a band assemblage. However, the absolute incorporation of radiolabel into lipid- and amino acid fractions remained essentially constant over this range of photon flux densities. Light-saturated rates of photosynthesis of three infiltration assemblages under hypersaline conditions (approx. 50 and 110%) decreased by 13–55% (controls: approx. 32–34%). The adverse effect of salinity treatment was much less pronounced under hyposaline conditions (approx. 20), where maximal photosynthetic rates were only slightly decreased (-9%) or even stimulated (14–22%). These observations suggest that sea ice microalgae in the ice edge region of the Weddell Sea during spring, being in a metabolically active stage, may have the potential to initiate or contribute to phytoplankton blooms upon release into the water column.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

An in situ incubation technique used successfully to measure the photosynthetic carbon assimilation of internal algal assemblages within thick multiyear Arctic ice was developed and improved to measure the photosynthetic carbon assimilation within young sea ice only 50 cm thick (Eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica). The light transmission was improved by the construction of a cylindrical frame instead of using a transparent acrylic-glass barrel. The new device enabled some of the first precise measurements of in situ photosynthetic carbon assimilation in newly formed Antarctic sea ice, which is an important component in the sea ice ecosystem of the Antarctic Ocean. The rates of carbon assimilation of the interior algal assemblage (top to 5 cm from bottom) was 0.25 mg C m–2 d–1 whereas the bottom algal community (lowest 5 cm) attained only 0.02 mg C m–2 d–1. Chl a specific production rates (PChl) for bottom algae (0.020 – 0.056 g C g chl a –1 h–1) revealed strong light limitation, whereas the interior algae (PChl = 0.7 – 1.2 g C g chl a –1 h–1) were probably more limited by low temperatures (< –5 °C) and high brine salinities.  相似文献

Photosynthetic capacity in microalgae associated with Antarctic pack ice   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary Previous studies of primary production in Antarctic seas have concluded that microalgae associated with sea ice make only a minor contribution to the carbon budget; however, production estimates for sea ice algae have been based almost exclusively on microalgae from nearshore fast ice. We measured biomass and rates of photosynthesis (at saturating irradiances) in microalgae collected from offshore pack ice during four cruises to the Weddell-Scotia Sea and the region west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Chlorophyll a concentrations in pack ice (0.089 to 260 g 1-1) were as high as reported from fast ice. Photosynthetic rates typically ranged (median 75%) from 0.3 to 3.6 C g chl a -1 h-1 (n=127; arithmetic mean = 1.7, S D =1.9). These photosynthetic capacities are approximately an order of magnitude greater than previously reported for fast ice microalgae, but are similar to rates reported for Antarctic phytoplankton. Because pack ice constitutes more than 90% of the ice cover in Antarctic seas and indigenous microalgae have a higher photosynthetic capacity than previously realized, we raise the question: has the importance of sea ice algae to primary product: on in the southern ocean been underestimated?  相似文献

Summary The measurement of Chl a, Chl b and Chl c contents in four size fractions (Nuclepore filters of 10 m, 3m, 1 m and 0.2 m pore-size) together with microscopic examination illustrate the structure and the relative importance of the micro-, nano and pico-phytoplankton in the production system in the Weddell/Scotia Confluence area. In the Scotia Sea, large diatoms were prevalent and their biomass increased during the six week cruise period, exceeding 1 mg Chl a m–3 at the beginning of January. In contrast, in the Marginal Ice Zone of the Weddell Sea, the biomass remained low, up to 0.3 mg Chl a m–3. A diversified nanoplankton community accounted for more than 90% of this biomass: small diatoms, naked dinoflagellates, cryptophyceans, prymnesiophytes and green flagellates which increased the Chl b/Chl a ratio to values >0.20. An important trend affected the Confluence area, where a high biomass net-plankton community (4 mg Chl a m–3) rapidly changed towards a uniform nanoplankton system of the same kind as in the Weddell Sea. At times, autotrophic cryptophyceans were almost dominating (>4.106 cells/l), with a biomass up to 2 mg Chl a m–3 and a low phaeopytin ratio (<10%). This situation probably arises because of a grazing pressure by krill. However, due to the geographic and oceanographic peculiarities of this area, it is not possible to extrapolate these observations concerning the size structure of the primary producers to the Southern Ocean in general.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Summary The ice algae of the Barents Sea were studied from 1986 to 1988. With a few exceptions, the ice algal assemblages were dominated by pennate diatoms. From March to early June there was a transition from a mixed population of both centric and pennate diatoms at the start into a well developed Nitzschia frigida assemblage. Nutrier ts in ice-covered regions were high in spring, and high N/C and protein/carbohydrate ratios indicated no nutrient deficiency in the ice algae. The N/P ratios were lower than 15, but comparable to ratios of three ice algae species grown in culture at -0.5 °C and various light conditions. The Si/N ratios were lower than corresponding ratios from the Canadian Arctic and the Antarctic. The chemical composition revealed that silicate limited growth cannot be excluded. The cells were heavily shade-adapted the entire spring season, with high Chl/C ratios (0.045–0.084), comparable to the cultures growing at low irradiances. The growth rates in the cultures peaked at 50 mol m-2s-1 with maximum rates of 0.6–0.8 div. day-1, both for 12 and 24 h day lengths. The low growth rates for the May assemblages (max 0.20 div. day-1) indicated strong light limitation by self-shading. Adaptation experiments showed that some ice algae are highly adaptable, while others are not able to adjust to new irradiances. Their growth rates are inhibited by high irradiances and this may affect the distribution in the field.  相似文献

Tebuthiuron (N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N-dimethylurea) appears to control the riparian shrub saltcedar (Tamarix spp.); however, its use is restricted since the fate and effects of this herbicide in aquatic systems are unknown. Possible tebuthiuron impacts on aquatic production were examined in ten 2846-1 three-phase, open-system mesocosms. Each mesocosm contained sediment, water, algae, micro- and macroinvertebrates and fish, and was open to the atmosphere for gas exchange and colonization by indigenous macroinvertebrates and algae. The following nominal doses of tebuthiuron were used: 0 (control), 10, 70, 200, 500, and 1000 g 1–1. The 200 g 1–1 dose approximated the highest concentration of tebuthiuron detected in a water body after experimental application to a watershed. Data generated from all treatment levels were used in tebuthiuron fate analysis and in correlation analysis between the mesocosm variables. The control and the 200 g 1–1 treatment level were replicated (n = 3) to allow for additional statistical analyses of treatment effects at the 200 g 1–1 level. The adsorption of tebuthiuron to sediments contained in ten mesocosms was described by the Freundlich equation, x/m = 3.24c0.68. Phytoplankton primary production, chironomid density, and chironomid biomass were negatively correlated with tebuthiuron concentration during peak system productivity. Conversely, no trends were observed at any sample date between an omnivorous fish species and herbicide concentration. At the 200 g 1–1 dose level, only chironomid density was reduced. Factors responsible for reductions in chironomid density may include 1) a species shift in the 200 g 1–1 treatment algal assemblages toward a greater percentage of unpalatable biomass, and 2) decreased algal productivity and/or an algal species shift in mesocosms receiving dose levels greater than 200 g 1–1. Chironomid density reduction at the 200 g 1–1 dose level suggests that deleterious effects may occur in some stream systems exposed to a 200 g 1–1 tebuthiuron concentration.Contribution No. T-9-367 of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Texas Tech University.Contribution No. T-9-367 of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Texas Tech University.  相似文献

Summary A novel sampling/incubating device was used to determine the in situ patterns of intracellular photosynthate allocation by algae living in the bottom of annual sea ice in the Canadian arctic. During the seasonal decline of the bloom in late May and June, the average allocation pattern after 24 h incubation in the bottom 1 cm of ice (where the bulk of the algae are found) was 30.5% to low molecular weight materials, 10.6% to lipid, 48.8% to polysaccharide and 8.8% to protein. Allocation patterns were vertically stratified and light-dependent within the bottom ice community, with higher allocation to lipid in the upper, better-illuminated, strata. Chlorophyll-specific photosynthesis rates were extremely low (<0.031 gC·g Chl a –1·h–1). Short incubations (ca. 1h) gave similar results to the 24 h incubations. The in situ allocation patterns were atypical of those normally expected for light-limited microalgae, but were consistent with a physiological response to inorganic nutrient limitation in the late stages of the bloom.  相似文献

Summary A distinct fauna consisting mainly of nematodes, harpacticoid and cyclopoid copepods, rotifers, turbellarians and polychaete larvae, inhabits the lower levels of the sea ice in Frobisher Bay. Similar faunas are found throughout circumpolar regions. Thirteen taxa of the Frobisher Bay ice fauna were entirely herbivorous. Their food consisted of 26 genera of algae dominated by Chlamydomonas, Nitzschia, Navicula and Chaetoceros. There was a clear tendency to feed on the most abundant ice algae, hence little evidence of selective feeding. High algal food concentrations in the ice (estimated at 5000 g C/l) were in sharp contrast with the scant nourishment available from phytoplankton under the ice (8 g C/l) from mid-winter until the start of the summer bloom. Algal stocks and estimated productivity rates indicate that ice meiofaunal food requirements may be met by the ice algae. All the major ice meiofaunal species are well adapted to feeding within the ice. All are small enough to enter brine channels and secure particulate prey from surfaces within confined spaces. The ice meiofaunal species are major consumers of the ice algae and therefore important links in the transfer of energy from the ice to pelagic and benthic predators, including fishes, birds and mammals.  相似文献

Summary Four major functional units have been identified in the Southern Ocean and the mechanisms that control the dynamics of nutrients and phytoplankton are detailed for the different sub-systems. The very productive Coastal and Continental Shelf Zone (CCSZ, 0.9 M km 2) can experience severe macronutrient depletion paralleling intense diatom-dominated phytoplankton blooming (maximum > 8 mg Chl a m–3) at the ice edge. In the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ, 16 M km 2), dramatic variations in the hydrological structure occur in surface waters during the spring to summer retreat of the pack-ice, changing from a well-mixed system to a stratified one within the reaches of the ice edge. Grazing activity of euphausiids limits phytoplankton biomass to a moderate level (Chl a maximum around 4 mg m–3). A shift from new production to a regenerated production regime has been demonstrated during spring, along with the key role played by protozoans in controlling high ammonium concentrations (maximum > 2 M) in the surface layers. The well-mixed Permanently Open Ocean Zone (POOZ, 14 M km 2) is characterised by variable N/Si ratios in surface waters along a north-south transect: at the northern border of the POOZ (N/Si = 0.25) silicate concentrations as low as < 10 M could help limit the phytoplankton growth. Although favourable conditions have been demonstrated for the initiation of blooms in spring in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, it appears that critical-depth/ mixing-depth relationships control maximum chlorophyll a concentrations < 1 g l–1 during summer. The POOZ is usually not influenced directly by euphausiids, except for the Scotia Sea and Drake Passage where migrations of krill from the adjacent SIZ are usual. Mesoscale eddies are typical of the Polar Front Zone (FPZ, 3 M km 2): significant increases in phytoplankton biomass have been reported in this frontal area (maximum Chl a = 2 mg m–3). Food web and biogeochemical cycles in this sub-system are poorly documented. The question of limitation of the primary production by eolian-transported trace-metals in these different sub-systems is still a matter of debate, although clear iron limitation has been evidenced for offshore waters of the Ross Sea.Data presented here were partly collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the quantity and quality of phytoplankton were studied in six channel catfish culture ponds. Chlorophyll a concentrations were generally highest in the summer (averaging >200 g 1–1) but the highest individual chlorophyll a value recorded (910 g 1–1) occurred in the winter during a bloom of Dictyosphaerium pulchellum. On the average, green algae (Chlorophyta) and euglenoids (Euglenophyta) represented relatively constant proportions of the phytoplankton community seasonally (about 35 and 10%, respectively). In the summer and fall, blue-green algae (Cyanophyta) became abundant. Diatoms were relatively abundant at all times and constituted the majority of the community in the winter and spring.  相似文献

Summary Phytoplankton biomass and distribution of major phytoplankton groups were investigated in relation to sea ice conditions, hydrography and nutrients along three north-south transects in the north western Weddell Sea in early spring 1988 during the EPOS Study (European Polarstern Study), Leg 1. Three different zones along the transects could be distinguished: 1) the Open Water Zone (OWZ) from 58° to 60°S with high chlorophyll a concentrations up to 3.5 g l–1; 2) the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) from 60° to about 62.5° with chlorophyll a concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 g l–1, and 3) the closed pack-ice zone (CPI) from 62.5° to 63.2°S with chlorophyll a concentrations below 0.1 gl–1. Nutrient concentrations increased towards the south showing winter values under the closed pack-ice. Centric diatoms such as Thalassiosira gravida and Chaetoceros neglectum forming large colonies dominated the phytoplankton assemblage in terms of biomass in open water together with large, long chain forming, pennate diatoms, whereas small pennate diatoms such as Nitzschia spp., and nanoflagellates prevailed in ice covered areas. Fairly low concentrations of phytoplankton cells were encountered at the southernmost stations and many empty diatom frustules were found in the samples. The enhanced phytoplankton biomass in the Weddell-Scotia-Confluence area is achieved through sea ice melting in the frontal zone of two different water masses, the Weddell and the Scotia Sea surface waters.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Isoxaflutole [5-cyclopropyl-4-(2-methylsulphonyl-4-trifluromethylbenzoyl)isoxazole] is a new preemergence herbicide for broad-spectrum weed control in maize. The effect of isoxaflutole on chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid (Car) biosynthesis was investigated in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledons. Etiolated tissue was incubated with 5 mM isoxaflutole for 24 h and irradiated (60 mol m-2 s-1). The irradiation for 3 h did not reduce Chl a, Chl b, and Car contents, but after a 28-h irradiation the contents of Chl a and Car decreased by 35 and 15 %, respectively, and the content of Chl b increased by 24 %. Increasing the concentration of isoxaflutole beyond 5 mM resulted in reduction of Chl a (71 %), Chl b (20 %), and Car (31 %) contents. Similarly, increase in irradiance from 60 to 180 mol m-2 s-1 resulted in larger reduction of Chl and Car contents. Exogenously supplied 5-aminolevulinic acid did not reverse the isoxaflutole-inhibited Chl synthesis, whereas an exogenously supplied homogentisic acid lactone reversed the inhibition of pigment synthesis due to isoxaflutole.  相似文献

The responses to irradiance of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport were simultaneously studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurement in two-year-old apple tree leaves (Malus pumila Mill. cv. Tengmu No.1/Malus hupehensis Rehd). Net photosynthetic rate (P N) was saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) 600-1 100 (mol m-2 s-1, while the PS2 non-cyclic electron transport (P-rate) showed a maximum at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1. With PPFD increasing, either leaf potential photosynthetic CO2 assimilation activity (Fd/Fs) and PS2 maximal photochemical activity (Fv/Fm) decreased or the ratio of the inactive PS2 reaction centres (RC) [(Fi – Fo)/(Fm – Fo)] and the slow relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qs) increased from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1, but cyclic electron transport around photosystem 1 (RFp), irradiance induced PS2 RC closure [(Fs – Fo)/Fm – Fo)], and the fast and medium relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qf and qm) increased remarkably from PPFD 900 (mol m-2 s-1. Hence leaf photosynthesis of young apple leaves saturated at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1 and photoinhibition occurred above PPFD 900 mol m-2 s-1. During the photoinhibition at different irradiances, young apple tree leaves could dissipate excess photons mainly by energy quenching and state transition mechanisms at PPFD 900-1 100 mol m-2 s-1, but photosynthetic apparatus damage was unavoidable from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1. We propose that Chl fluorescence parameter P-rate is superior to the gas exchange parameter P N and the Chl fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm as a definition of saturation irradiance and photoinhibition of plant leaves.  相似文献

In the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the brine shrimp Artemia franciscanaKellogg is an important food resource for birds and they produce dormant cysts that are harvested and used extensively in the aquaculture industry. We analyzed the limnological factors controlling Artemia growth and cyst production over 12 months in 1994 and 1995. Laboratory experiments showed that inter-brood intervals were highly dependent on temperature and slightly on food level. At optimal temperatures and nutritious food, juveniles reached reproductive size within 7 d in the laboratory. In winter when temperatures were less than 3 °C, Artemia were absent from the lake, phytoplankton abundance was high (13 Chl a g l–1), and the dominant grazers were ciliated protozoans. In the spring, cysts hatched when phytoplankton was abundant (15–30 g Chl a l–1), and the Artemia grew and produced large clutches of ovoviviparous eggs. Estimated naupliar production from these eggs was 80 l–1 from April to May. Despite the high production of nauplii, Artemia densities declined to 8 l–1by June and the growing shrimp population grazed down the phytoplankton resource to <1 g Chl a l–1. With the depleted phytoplankton food resource during the summer, Artemia growth slowed, lipid indices decreased, clutch sizes declined, and females switched primarily to oviparous cyst production. During the summer, there was limited production of ovoviviparous eggs, and limited recruitment of juveniles, probably due to low food. Although oviparous reproduction began in June, more than 90% of the cysts were produced after July when female densities had declined to 1.5 l–1, but nearly all of them were producing cysts. Estimated cyst production was 650000 m–2, or 4.54 × 106 kg dry weight for the entire lake. The reported commercial harvest took 21% of the 1994 cyst production. That harvest had little impact on the subsequent year's population, as Artemia densities were ultimately controlled by algal production in the lake.  相似文献

The quantitative and qualitative distribution of phytoplankton was investigated along five North–South transects in the eastern Weddell Sea during the transition from late autumn to winter. Relationships with the regional hydrography, progressing sea ice coverage, nutrient distribution and zooplankton are discussed and compared with data from other seasons. To the north of the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) a remnant temperature minimum layer was found above the primary pycnocline throughout summer. Surface waters had not entirely acquired typical winter characteristics. While temperature was already in the winter range, this was not the case for salinity. Highest biomass of phytoplankton, with the exception of the first transect, was found in the region adjoining the ASF to the north. Absolute chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations dropped from 0.35 to 0.19 g l–1 . Nutrient pools exhibited a replenishing tendency. Ammonium concentrations were high (0.75–2 mol l–1), indicating extensive heterotrophic activity. The phytoplankton in the ASF region was dominated by nanoflagellates, particularly Phaeocystis spp.. North of the ASF the abundance of diatoms increased, with Fragilariopsis spp., F. cylindrus and Thalassiosira spp. dominating. Community structure varied both due to hydrographical conditions and the advancing ice edge. The phytoplankton assemblage formed during late autumn were very similar to the ones found in early spring. A POC/PON ratio close to Redfield, decreasing POC concentration and a high phaeophytin/Chl a ratio, as well as a high abundance of mesozooplankton indicated that a strong grazing pressure was exerted on the phytoplankton community. A comparison between primary production (PP) in the water column and the sea ice showed a shift of the major portion of PP into the ice during the period of investigation.  相似文献

Development of ice biota in a temperate sea area (Gulf of Bothnia)   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
A study of sea ice biota was carried out in the Gulf of Bothnia (northern Baltic Sea) during the winter of 1989–1990. Samples (ice cores) were taken at a coastal station at regular time intervals during the ice season. Chlorophyll a concentration, algal species distribution, bacterial numbers, and primary and bacterial production were measured. Colonization of the ice began in January when daylight was low. As the available light increased, the algae started to grow exponentially. The vertical chlorophyll a distribution changed and algal species composition and biomass changed during the season. During the initial and middle phase of colonization, ice-specific diatoms, Nitzschia frigida and Navicula pelagica, dominated the algal biomass. Nutrients (PO4 3– and NO3j) were found to be depleted during the time of algal exponential growth. The maximum algal biomass exceeded 800 g C 1–1. The primary production supplied food for heterotrophic organisms. The presence of heterotrophic organisms of different trophic levels (bacteria, flagellates, ciliates and rotifers) indicated an active microbial food web.  相似文献

Intensity of 2 s delayed fluorescence (DF) as a function of steady-state actinic light intensity was investigated in pea chloroplasts in the presence of 10 M DCMU. The light saturation curve of DF was approximated by a sum of two hyperbolic components which differ by an order of magnitude in the half-saturating incident light intensity. The relative contribution of the amplitudes of the components was practically independent of cation (Na+ and Mg2+) concentration and a short-term heating of the chloroplasts at 45°C. The component saturating at low incident light intensity was selectively suppressed by 100 M DCMU or by 1 mol g-1 Chl oleic acid. DF intensity following excitation by a single saturating 15 s flash was equal to the intensity of the component saturating at a low incident light intensity. Upon flash excitation, the maximum steady-state DF level was found to be attained only after a series of saturating flashes. It is concluded that the two components of the DF light saturation curves are related to PS II centres heterogeneity in quantum yield of stabilization of the reduced primary quinone acceptor.Abbreviations DF Delayed fluorescence - L1- and L2-components DF components saturating at low and high incident light intensity, respectively - I incident light intensity - L DF intensity - P680 reaction centre chlorophyll of PS II - QA and QB primary and secondary quinone acceptors of PS II, respectively  相似文献

During the austral summer of 1989/1990, surface samples were obtained of size-fractionated biomass, and the productivity of phytoplankton, its cell abundance, the composition of the dominant species, the concentration of particulate organic carbon (POC) and the related environmental surface parameters were measured in a large-scale survey primarily of the Atlantic and Indian Sectors. The results showed that the southern atlantic sector is the most fertile; chlorophylla (Chla) concentration averaged over 2 μg l−1, average cell abundance was about 41.0 × 103 cell l−1, and average POC concentration was also the highest (>100 μg l−1), but was lower in the Drake Passage and the southern Indian sector. The results for size-fractionated Chla showed that netplankton (>20 μm) in the South Atlantic Ocean, having abundant nutrients, accounted for the highest proportion (average 65%) of biomass. In the infertile South Indian Ocean, picoplankton (<2 μm) accounted for the highest proportion, averaging 47%. The results for size-fractionated productivity showed that the contribution of picoplankton to total productivity was the largest in the South Atlantic Ocean and Drake Passage, those of nanoplankton (2–20 μm) and netplankton being about equal. The relatively high photosynthesis assimilation number of picoplankton demonstrates their importance in the marine ecosystems of Antarctic water. In comparison with the Antarctic water, the subantarctic and subtropical waters are infertile.  相似文献

Primary productivity, biomass and chlorophyll-a of size fractionated phytoplankton (<0.22 m, <3 m, <8 m, <10 m, <40 m, <64 m, <112 m and <200 m) were estimated in 6 ponds and 5 experimental enclosures. The results showed that the planktonic algae less than 10 m are important in the biomass and production of phytoplankton in saline–alkaline ponds. The production of size fractionated phytoplankton corresponding to <112 m, <10 m and <3 m in saline–alkaline ponds were 10.5 ± 6.6 , 8.6 ± 5.4 and 0.33 ± 0.1 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. Mean community respiration rate was 1.80 ± 0.73, 1.69 ± 0.90 and 1.38 ± 1.12 mgC l–1 d–1, respectively. Summary Uptake rates of ammonium, nitrate and urea were measured during the EPOS leg 1 cruise to the Weddell Sea in October–November 1988 using the isotope 15N. Nitrate was the most important nitrogen source both for ice algae (f-ratio 0.88) and for phytoplankton in the water column (f-ratio 0.85). Indications of a gradual decrease in % new production with time were found in the outer marginal ice zone. Nitrogen uptake rates in ice algae from the sub-ice assemblage were light-limited at in situ irradiances. Significant regeneration of ammonium was found in ice algal samples only.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献
