A series of steady-state and short-term experiments on a three-phase circulating-bed biofilm reactor (CBBR) for removing toluene from gas streams were conducted to investigate the effect of macroporous-carrier size (1-mm cubes versus 4-mm cubes, which have the same total surface area) on CBBR performance. Experimental conditions were identical, except for the carrier size. The CBBR with 1-mm carriers (the 1-mm CBBR) overcame the performance limitation observed with the CBBR with 4-mm carriers (the 4-mm CBBR): oxygen depletion inside the biofilm. The 1-mm CBBR consistently had the superior removal efficiencies of toluene and COD, higher than 93% for all, and the advantage was greatest for the highest toluene loading, 0.12 M/m2-day. The 1-mm carriers achieved superior performance by minimizing the negative effects of oxygen depletion, because they had 4.7 to 6.8 times thinner biofilm depths. The 1-mm carriers continued to provide protection from excess biomass detachment and inhibition from toluene. Finally, the 1-mm CBBR achieved volumetric removal capacities up to 300 times greater than demonstrated by other biofilters treating toluene and related volatile hydrocarbons.  相似文献

In this study, a single-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal reactor, packed with a novel acrylic fiber biomass carrier material (Biofix), was applied for nitrogen removal from sludge digester liquor. For rapid start-up, conventional activated sludge was added to the reactor soon after the attachment of anammox biomass on the Biofix carriers, which allowed conventional activated sludge to form a protective layer of biofilm around the anammox biomass. The Nitrogen removal efficiency reached 75% within 1 week at a nitrogen loading rate of 0.46 kg-N/m3/day for synthetic wastewater treatment. By the end of the synthetic wastewater treatment period, the maximum nitrogen removal rate had increased to 0.92 kg-N/m3/day at a nitrogen loading rate of 1.0 kg-N/m3/day. High nitrogen removal rate was also achieved during the actual raw digester liquor treatment with the highest nitrogen removal rate being 0.83 kg-N/m3/day at a nitrogen loading rate of 0.93 kg-N/m3/day. The thick biofilm on Biofix carriers allowed anammox bacteria to survive under high DO concentration of 5–6 mg/l resulting in stable and high nitrogen removal performance. FISH and CLSM analysis demonstrated that anammox bacteria coexisted and surrounded by ammonium oxidizing bacteria.  相似文献

A multi‐species nitrifying biofilm model (MSNBM) is developed to describe nitrite accumulation by simultaneous free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) inhibition, direct pH inhibition, and oxygen limitation in a biofilm. The MSNBM addresses the spatial gradient of pH with biofilm depth and how it induces changes of FA and FNA speciation and inhibition. Simulations using the MSNBM in a completely mixed biofilm reactor show that influent total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentration, bulk dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, and buffer concentration exert significant control on the suppression of nitrite‐oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and shortcut biological nitrogen removal (SBNR), but the pH in the bulk liquid has a weaker influence. Ammonium oxidation increases the nitrite concentration and decreases the pH, which together can increase FNA inhibition of NOB in the biofilm. Thus, a low buffer concentration can accentuate SBNR. DO and influent TAN concentrations are efficient means to enhance DO limitation, which affects NOB more than ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB) inside the biofilm. With high influent TAN concentration, FA inhibition is dominant at an early phase, but finally DO limitation becomes more important as TAN degradation and biofilm growth proceed. MSNBM results indicate that oxygen depletion and FNA inhibition throughout the biofilm continuously suppress the growth of NOB, which helps achieve SBNR with a lower TAN concentration than in systems without concentration gradients. Membrane process for biological treatment of contaminated gas streams   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A hollow fiber membrane bioreactor was investigated for control of air emissions of biodegradable volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the membrane bioreactor, gases containing VOCs pass through the lumen of microporous hydrophobic hollow fiber membranes. Soluble compounds diffuse through the membrane pores and partition into a VOC degrading biofilm. The hollow fiber membranes serve as a support for the microbial population and provide a large surface area for VOC and oxygen mass transfer. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of toluene loading rate, gas residence time, and liquid phase turbulence on toluene removal in a laboratory-scale membrane bioreactor. Initial acclimation of the microbial culture to toluene occurred over a period of nine days, after which a 70% removal efficiency was achieved at an inlet toluene concentration of 200 ppm and a gas residence time of 1.8 s (elimination capacity of 20 g m-3 min-1). At higher toluene loading rates, a maximum elimination capacity of 42 g m-3 min-1 was observed. In the absence of a biofilm (abiotic operation), mass transfer rates were found to increase with increasing liquid recirculation rates. Abiotic mass transfer coefficients could be estimated using a correlation of dimensionless parameters developed for heat transfer. Liquid phase recirculation rate had no effect on toluene removal when the biofilm was present, however. Three models of the reactor were created: a numeric model, a first-order flat sheet model, and a zero-order flat sheet model. Only the numeric model fit the data well, although removal predicted as a function of gas residence time disagreed slightly with that observed. A modification in the model to account for membrane phase resistance resulted in an underprediction of removal. Sensitivity analysis of the numeric model indicated that removal was a strong function of the liquid phase biomass density and biofilm diffusion coefficient, with diffusion rates below 10(-9) m2 s-1 resulting in decreased removal rates.  相似文献

Elimination capacity (EC) is frequently used as a performance and design criterion for vapor-phase biofilters without further verification of the microbial quantity and activity. This study was conducted to investigate how biofilters respond to high pollutant loadings and ultimately how this affects the EC of the biofilter. Two identical laboratory-scale biofilters were maintained at an initial toluene loading rate of 46 g m−3 h−1 for a period of 24 days. After the initial biofilm development stage, the loading rates were increased to 91 g m−3 h−1 and 137 g m−3 h−1, respectively. Following a short period of pseudo-steady state, toluene removal efficiencies rapidly declined in both biofilters, with a concurrent decline in both critical and maximum ECs. The decline was mainly due to deterioration in the biodegradation activity of the biofilm and a decline in the toluene-degrading bacterial population within the biofilm phase. The findings imply that high toluene loadings accelerated the deterioration in overall performance due to a rapid accumulation of inactive biomass. As a result, care must be used when relying on EC values for biofilter design and operational purposes, since the values do not appropriately reflect the temporal changes in biodegradation activity and active biomass quantities that can occur in biofilters subjected to high inlet loadings.  相似文献

The effect on intra-membrane oxygen pressure at a constant carbon substrate loading rate on the development of biofilms of Vibrio natrigens in a membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) was investigated experimentally and by mathematical modelling. A recently reported technique (Zhang et al., 1998. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 59: 80-89) for the in situ measurement of the substrate diffusion coefficients in a growing biofilm and the mass transfer coefficients in the boundary layer at the biofilm liquid interface was used. This aided the study of the effect of the heterogeneous biofilm structure and also improved the reliability of the model predictions. The different intra-membrane oxygen pressures used, 12.5, 25 and 50 kPa, with acetate as the carbon substrate, showed a marked effect on the initial biofilm growth rate, on acetate removal rate, particularly in thick biofilms and on biofilm structure. The model predicted the substrate limitation regimes, the location of the active biomass layer within the biofilms and the trends in oxygen uptake rate through the membrane into the biofilms. During the development of the biofilms, the biofilm thickness and the intra-membrane oxygen pressure were found to be the most important parameters influencing the MABR performance while the effect of biofilm structure was less marked.  相似文献

Shortcut nitrogen removal, that is, removal via formation and reduction of nitrite rather than nitrate, has been observed in membrane-aerated biofilms (MABs), but the extent, the controlling factors, and the kinetics of nitrite formation in MABs are poorly understood. We used a special MAB reactor to systematically study the effects of the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at the membrane surface, which is the biofilm base, on nitrification rates, extent of shortcut nitrification, and microbial community structure. The focus was on anoxic bulk liquids, which is typical in MAB used for total nitrogen (TN) removal, although aerobic bulk liquids were also studied. Nitrifying MABs were grown on a hollow-fiber membrane exposed to 3 mg N/L ammonium. The MAB intra-membrane air pressure was varied to achieve different DO concentrations at the biofilm base, and the bulk liquid was anoxic or with 2 g m(-3) DO. With 2.2 and 3.5 g m(-3) DO at the biofilm base, and with an anoxic bulk-liquid, the ammonium fluxes were 0.75 and 1.0 g N m(-2) day(-1), respectively, and nitrite was the main oxidized nitrogen product. However, with membrane DO of 5.5 g m(-3), and either zero or 2 g m(-3) DO in the bulk, the ammonium flux was around 1.3 g N m(-2) day(-1), and nitrate flux increased significantly. For all experiments, the cell density of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was relatively uniform throughout the biofilm, but the density of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) decreased with decreasing biofilm DO. Among NOB, Nitrobacter spp. were dominant in biofilm regions with 2 g m(-3) DO or greater, while Nitrospira spp. were dominant in regions with less than 2 g m(-3) DO. A biofilm model, including AOB, Nitrobacter spp., and Nitrospira spp., was developed and calibrated with the experimental results. The model predicted the greatest extent of nitrite formation (95%) and the lowest ammonium oxidation flux (0.91 g N m(-2) day(-1)) when the membrane DO was 2 g m(-3) and the bulk liquid was anoxic. Conversely, the model predicted the lowest extent of nitrite formation (40%) and the highest ammonium oxidation flux (1.5 g N m(-2) day(-1)) when the membrane-DO and bulk-DO were 8 g m(-3) and 2 g m(-3), respectively. The estimated kinetic parameters for Nitrospira spp., revealed a high affinity for nitrite and oxygen. This explains the dominance of Nitrospira spp. over Nitrobacter spp. in regions with low nitrite and oxygen concentrations. Our results suggest that shortcut nitrification can effectively be controlled by manipulating the DO at the membrane surface. A tradeoff is made between increased nitrite accumulation at lower DO, and higher nitrification rates at higher DO.  相似文献

The traditional two-stage anoxic–oxic (A/O) activated sludge process might be inefficient in pollutants removal and could not ensure the effluent quality. By installing polyurethane foams as carriers and inoculating specialized bacteria in the oxic compartments, the activated sludge systems could be transformed into bioaugmented biofilm processes to enhance the removal efficiency to recalcitrant pollutants. Optimal environment should be provided for the bioaugmented bacteria during systems’ start-up. In the present research, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was studied as a crucial environmental factor on the performances of the bioagumented systems. The results indicated that the system adopted lower DO concentration took less time to start-up, performed higher pollutants removal efficiency and stronger resistance to shock loadings compared to the system with higher DO level. This was the first attempt to evaluate the importance of DO concentration on the start-up of the two-stage bioaugmented A/O biofilm process.  相似文献

We determined vertical changes in current velocity and dissolved oxygen concentration in biofilms on artificial and natural substrates using microelectrodes. We used biofilms developed on glass slides dipped in an artificial stream for 3 months, artificial clay tiles dipped in an outdoor artificial stream for 3 months, and natural pebbles. In the biofilm on a glass slide, current velocity significantly decreased from the surface of the biofilm and became 0 cm s−1 at the surface of the glass slide. Vertical profile of current velocity versus depth indicated a presence of a viscous sublayer of 0.2-mm thickness above the surface of glass slide. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration increased within the biofilm and attained the maximum (123%) at the surface of the glass slide, indicating active photosynthesis by sessile diatoms at the layer corresponding to the observed viscous sublayer. In the biofilm on an artificial tile, DO increased to 163% saturation at 24.849-mm depth, followed by rapid decrease (6%) at the surface of the tile. A similar result of remarkable decrease in DO saturation was also found in the biofilm on a natural pebble. These results suggest that smoothness of the substrate surface is related to the vertical profile of DO saturation. The thickness of the viscous sublayer and oxygen-depleted area (up to several hundred micrometers, μm) was sufficient for the presence of bacteria, protists, and other metazoan animals, suggesting high activity and diversity of those heterotrophs in the bottom part of biofilms.  相似文献

The biofilm airlift suspension (BAS) reactor can treat wastewater at a high volumetric loading rate combined with a low sludge loading. Two BAS reactors were operated, with an ammonium load of 5 kg N/(m(3) d), in order to study the influence of biomass and oxygen concentration on the nitrification process. After start-up the nitrifying biomass in the reactors gradually increased up to 30 g VSS/L. Due to this increased biomass concentration the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient was negatively influenced. The resulting gradual decrease in dissolved oxygen concentration (over a 2-month period) was associated with a concomitantly nitrite build-up. Short term experiments showed a similar relation between dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) and nitrite accumulation. It was possible to obtain full ammonium conversion with approximately 50% nitrate and 50% nitrite in the effluent. The facts that (i) nitrite build up occurred only when DO dropped, (ii) the nitrite formation was stable over long periods, and (iii) fully depending on DO levels in short term experiments, led to the conclusion that it was not affected by microbial adaptations but associated with intrinsic characteristics of the microbial growth system. A simple biofilm model based on the often reported difference of oxygen affinity between ammonium and nitrite oxydizers was capable of adequately describing the phenomena.Measurements of biomass density and concentration are critical for the interpretation of the results, but highly sensitive to sampling procedures. Therefore we have developed an independent method, based on the residence time of Dextran Blue, to check the experimental methods. There was a good agreement between procedures. The relation between biomass concentration, oxygen mass transfer rate and nitrification in a BAS reactor is discussed. Oxygen mass transfer characteristics in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Immobilization of pollutant-degrading microorganisms on oxygen-permeable membranes provides a novel method of increasing the oxidation capacity of wastewater treatment bioreactors. Oxygen mass transfer characteristics during continuous-flow steady-state experiments were investigated for biofilms supported on tubular silicone membranes. An analysis of oxygen mass transport and reaction using an established mathematical model for dual-substrate limitation supported the experimental results reported. In thick biofilms, an active layer of biomass where both carbon substrate and oxygen are available was found to exist. The location of this active layer varies depending on the ratio of the carbon substrate loading rate to the intramembrane oxygen pressure. The thickness of a carbon-substrate-starved layer was found to greatly influence the mass transport of oxygen into the active biomass layer, which was located close to, but not in contact with, the biofilm-liquid interface. The experimental results demonstrated that oxygen uptake rates as high as 20 g m-2 d-1 bar-1 can be achieved, and the model predicts that, for an optimized biofilm thickness, oxygen uptake rates of more than 30 g m-2 d-1 bar-1 should be possible. This would allow membrane-aerated biofilm reactors to operate with much greater thicknesses of active biomass than can conventional biofilm reactors as well as offering the further advantage of close to 100% oxygen conversion efficiencies for the treatment of high-strength wastewaters. In the case of dual- substrate-limited biofilms, the potential to increase the oxygen flux does not necessarily increase the substrate (acetate) removal rate.  相似文献

The simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process for treating domestic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated with air flow rate of 500 L h?1 at 30 °C. Domestic wastewater was used as influent and Kaldnes rings were used as biomass carriers. In the beginning, long aeration condition was implemented to cultivate nitrification biofilm. Afterwards, intermittent aerobic condition was conducted during the cycle operation. The influent organic matter loading rate was improved by reducing the aeration and mixing times. Consequently, when the SNAD biofilm reactor was fed with the organic matter loading rate of 0.77 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the bio-bubbles appeared in the reactor and the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency decreased. After the organic matter loading rate decreased to 0.67 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the reactor showed excellent nitrogen removal performance. The TIN removal efficiency varied between 80 and 90 %, and the average TIN removal loading rate was 0.22 (kg TIN m?3 d?1). Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the anammox bacteria located in the inner part of the carriers. Finally, the microbial community analysis of 16S rRNA gene cloning revealed that the anammox bacteria on the carriers consisted of three main genuses: Candidatus Brocadia sp., Candidatus Brocadia caroliniensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.  相似文献

The anammox bacteria were enriched from reject water of anaerobic digestion of municipal wastewater sludge onto moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system carriers-the ones initially containing no biomass (MBBR1) as well as the ones containing nitrifying biomass (MBBR2). Duration of start-up periods of the both reactors was similar (about 100?days), but stable total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency occurred earlier in the system containing nitrifying biomass. Anammox TN removal efficiency of 70% was achieved by 180?days in both 20?l volume reactors at moderate temperature of 26.0°C. During the steady state phase of operation of MBBRs the average TN removal efficiencies and maximum TN removal rates in MBBR1 were 80% (1,000?g-N/m(3)/day, achieved by 308?days) and in MBBR2 85% (1,100?g-N/m(3)/day, achieved by 266?days). In both reactors mixed bacterial cultures were detected. Uncultured Planctomycetales bacterium clone P4, Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii and uncultured Nitrospira sp. clone 53 were identified by PCR-DGGE from the system initially containing blank biofilm carriers as well as from the nitrifying biofilm system; from the latter in addition to these also uncultured ammonium oxidizing bacterium clone W1 and Nitrospira sp. clone S1-62 were detected. FISH analysis revealed that anammox microorganisms were located in clusters in the biofilm. Using previously grown nitrifying biofilm matrix for anammox enrichment has some benefits over starting up the process from zero, such as less time for enrichment and protection against severe inhibitions in case of high substrate loading rates.  相似文献

Recent studies have focused on using vapor-phase bioreactors for the treatment of volatile organic compounds from contaminated air streams. Although high removal capacities have been achieved in many studies, long-term operation is often unstable at high pollutant loadings due to biomass accumulation and drying of the packing medium. In this study, three bench-scale bioreactors were operated to determine the effect of packing material and fungal predation on toluene removal efficiency and pressure drop. Toluene elimination capacities (mass toluene removed per unit packing per unit time) above 100 g m(-3) h(-1) were obtained in the fungal bioreactors packed with light-weight, artificial medium, and submersion of the packing in mineral medium once per week was found to provide sufficient moisture and nutrients to the biofilm. The use of mites as fungal predators improved performance by increasing the overall mineralization of toluene to CO(2), and by dislodging biomass along the bioreactor.  相似文献

A multi-population biofilm model for completely autotrophic nitrogen removal was developed and implemented in the simulation program AQUASIM to corroborate the concept of a redox-stratification controlled biofilm (ReSCoBi). The model considers both counter- and co-diffusion biofilm geometries. In the counter-diffusion biofilm, oxygen is supplied through a gas-permeable membrane that supports the biofilm while ammonia (NH(4)(+)) is supplied from the bulk liquid. On the contrary, in the co-diffusion biofilm, both oxygen and NH(4)(+) are supplied from the bulk liquid. Results of the model revealed a clear stratification of microbial activities in both of the biofilms, the resulting chemical profiles, and the obvious effect of the relative surface loadings of oxygen and NH(4)(+) (J(O(2))/J(NH(4)(+))) on the reactor performances. Steady-state biofilm thickness had a significant but different effect on T-N removal for co- and counter-diffusion biofilms: the removal efficiency in the counter-diffusion biofilm geometry was superior to that in the co-diffusion counterpart, within the range of 450-1,400 microm; however, the efficiency deteriorated with a further increase in biofilm thickness, probably because of diffusion limitation of NH(4)(+). Under conditions of oxygen excess (J(O(2))/J(NH(4)(+)) > 3.98), almost all NH(4)(+) was consumed by aerobic ammonia oxidation in the co-diffusion biofilm, leading to poor performance, while in the counter-diffusion biofilm, T-N removal efficiency was maintained because of the physical location of anaerobic ammonium oxidizers near the bulk liquid. These results clearly reveal that counter-diffusion biofilms have a wider application range for autotrophic T-N removal than co-diffusion biofilms.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted in a saturated sand column with three bacterial strains that have different growth characteristics on toluene, Pseudomonas putida F1 which degrades toluene only under aerobic conditions, Thauera aromatica T1 which degrades toluene only under denitrifying conditions, and Ralstonia pickettii PKO1 has a facultative nature and can perform nitrate-enhanced biodegradation of toluene under hypoxic conditions (DO <2 mg/L). Steady-state concentration profiles showed that oxygen and nitrate appeared to be utilized simultaneously, regardless of the dissolved oxygen concentration and the results from fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) indicated that PKO1 maintained stable cells numbers throughout the column, even when the pore water oxygen concentration was high. Since PKO1's growth rate under aerobic condition is much lower than that of F1, except under hypoxic conditions, these observations were not anticipated. Therefore these observations require a mechanistic explanation that can account for localized low oxygen concentrations under aerobic conditions. To simulate the observed dynamics, a multispecies biofilm model was implemented. This model formulation assumes the formation of a thin biofilm that is composed of the three bacterial strains. The individual strains grow in response to the substrate and electron acceptor flux from bulk fluid into the biofilm. The model was implemented such that internal changes in bacterial composition and substrate concentration can be simulated over time and space. The model simulations from oxic to denitrifying conditions compared well to the experimental profiles of the chemical species and the bacterial strains, indicating the importance of accounting for the biological activity of individual strains in biofilms that span different redox conditions.  相似文献

The mechanisms occurring in a photolytic circulating-bed biofilm reactor (PCBBR) treating 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) were investigated using batch experiments following three protocols: photodegradation alone (P), biodegradation alone (B), and intimately coupled photodegradation and biodegradation (P&B). Initially, the ceramic particles used as biofilm carriers rapidly adsorbed TCP, particularly in the B experiments. During the first 10 min, the TCP removal rate for P&B was equal to the sum of the rates for P and B, and P&B continued to have the greatest TCP removal, with the TCP concentration approaching zero only in the P&B experiments. When phenol, an easily biodegradable compound, was added along with TCP in order to promote TCP mineralization by means of secondary utilization, P&B was superior to P and B in terms of mineralization of TCP, giving 95% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The microbial communities, examined by clone libraries, changed dramatically during the P&B experiments. Whereas Burkholderia xenovorans, a known degrader of chlorinated aromatics, was the dominant strain in the TCP-acclimated inoculum, it was replaced in the P&B biofilm by strains noted for biofilm formation and biodegrading non-chlorinated aromatics.  相似文献

Nitrogen removal from wastewater is often limited by the availability of reducing power to perform denitrification, especially when treating wastewaters with a low carbon:nitrogen ratio. In the increasingly popular sequencing batch reactor (SBR), bacteria have the opportunity to preserve reducing power from incoming chemical oxygen demand (COD) as poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB). The current study uses laboratory experiments and mathematical modeling in an attempt to generate a better understanding of the effect of oxygen on microbial conversion of COD into PHB. Results from a laboratory SBR with acetate as the organic carbon source showed that the aerobic acetate uptake process was oxygen-dependent, producing higher uptake rates at higher dissolved oxygen (DO) supply rates. However, at the lower DO supply rates (k(L)a 6 to 16 h(-1), 0 mg L(-1) DO), a higher proportion of the substrate was preserved as PHB than at higher DO supply rates (k(L)a 30, 51 h(-1), DO >0.9 mg L(-1)). Up to 77% of the reducing equivalents available from acetate were converted to PHB under oxygen limitation (Y(PHB/Ac) 0.68 Cmol/Cmol), as opposed to only 54% under oxygen-excess conditions (Y(PHB/Ac) 0.48 Cmol/Cmol), where a higher fraction of acetate was used for biomass growth. It was calculated that, by oxygen management during the feast phase, the amount of PHB preserved (1.4 Cmmol L(-1) PHB) accounted for an additional denitrification potential of up to 18 mg L(-1) nitrate-nitrogen. The trends of the effect of oxygen (and hence ATP availability) on PHB accumulation could be reproduced by the simulation model, which was based on biochemical stoichiometry and maximum rates obtained from experiments. Simulated data showed that, at low DO concentrations, the limited availability of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) prevented significant biomass growth and most ATP was used for acetate transport into the cell. In contrast, high DO supply rates provided surplus ATP and hence higher growth rates, resulting in decreased PHB yields. The results suggest that oxygen management is crucial to conserving reducing power during the feast phase of SBR operation, as excessive aeration rates decrease the PHB yield and allow higher biomass growth.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to select a support medium for an anaerobic biofilm fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) for waste water treatment. Six materials, shale, pumice, porous glass, quartz sand, activated carbon and anthracite were used as carriers for the biofilm. The reactors were operated in parallel for several months with vapour condensate from a sulfite cellulose process as feed. The criteria used for the evaluation were: a) Reproducibility of the reactor performance, b) performance of the different carriers under various loading rates, c) stability against toxic shock loadings using 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) as toxicant, d) recovery capacity after intoxication and starvation, e) adsorption/desorption behavior of the carriers.A comparison between four runs showed good reproducibility of the steady state removal rates. The performance of the reactors and the stability of the degradation rates were tested for a range of loading conditions. Unbuffered, buffered and pH controlled conditions were compared. The pumice carrier was best with respect to the degradation rate achieved per carrier mass. The response of the reactors to massive TCP step loadings was tested. Loadings less than 1.5 kg TCP/m3d resulted in initially normal gas production rates for all the systems, except the activated carbon, whose gas production was partially inhibited from the start. After increasing the load to 1.5 kg TCP/m3d the gas production rates of all the other reactors fell abruptly to zero. Restarting after 2 months, all reactors showed methanogenic activity without requiring new inoculum.Adsorption and desorption experiments with TCP showed that only the anthracite and activated carbon adsorbed appreciable amounts. The activated carbon had the greatest adsorption capacity but did not release the TCP by desorption, as did the anthracite.A bicomponent (pumice and anthracite) carrier mixture was compared in biological experiments with pumice and anthracite carrier alone, with and without TCP loading. The pumice and the carrier-mix performed equally well under non-toxic-loading conditions. With TCP toxic loading, the performance of the anthracite was superior. The anthracite carrier could be regenerated, owing mainly to its capacity for desorption.  相似文献

Toluene biodegradation and biofilm growth in an aerobic fixed-film reactor   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Aerobic biodegradation of toluene in a biofilm system was investigated. Toluene is easily biodegradable, like several other aromatic compounds. The degradation was first order at bulk concentrations lower than 0.14 mg/l and zero order above 6–8 mg/l. An average yield coefficient of 1 mg biomass/mg toluene degraded was found. A chemical oxygen demand balance relative to three biofilm growth scenarios showed that only a minor fraction of the carbon in the influent accumulated as biomass in the reactor. Of this accumulated biomass only a small fraction was active biomass, about 5% protein. A characterization of the carbon fractions leaving the reactor showed a significant production of soluble polymers and formation of suspended biomass. The latter was probably due to the detachment of filamentous bacteria. A decrease in toluene degradation was observed when the oxygen concentration was increased from 5 to about 20 mg/l. Future studies must show if this effect was due to inhibition. Correspondence to: J. P. Arcangeli  相似文献
