Sex determination: insights from the chicken   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23
Not all vertebrates share the familiar system of XX:XY sex determination seen in mammals. In the chicken and other birds, sex is determined by a ZZ:ZW sex chromosome system. Gonadal development in the chicken has provided insights into the molecular genetics of vertebrate sex determination and how it has evolved. Such comparative studies show that vertebrate sex-determining pathways comprise both conserved and divergent elements. The chicken embryo resembles lower vertebrates in that estrogens play a central role in gonadal sex differentiation. However, several genes shown to be critical for mammalian sex determination are also expressed in the chicken, but their expression patterns differ, indicating functional plasticity. While the genetic trigger for sex determination in birds remains unknown, some promising candidate genes have recently emerged. The Z-linked gene, DMRT1, supports the Z-dosage model of avian sex determination. Two novel W-linked genes, ASW and FET1, represent candidate female determinants.  相似文献

The discriminatory capacity of the radius in sex determination was investigated in a Dutch skeletal collection of recent origin. Midshaft subperiosteal diameter, maximum length and maximum transverse distal width were measured from roentgenograms. The discriminatory capacity of the radius was found to be of the same order as that reported in the literature for the other long bones. Maximum transverse distal width showed the highest consistency (85%) between estimated and documented sex. This method requires only the presence of the distal fragment of the radius.  相似文献

In insects, the sex is determined completely by genetic mechanisms, which at least in somatic tissues, are cell autonomous. The sex of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, is strongly controlled by the presence of the W chromosome. Genetic studies using translocations and deletions of W suggested that a presumptive feminizing gene (Fem) is located in a limited region of the W chromosome. Recent genomic studies revealed a small number of potential candidates for the Fem gene in this region. In addition, a Bombyx homologue of the Drosophila sex determining gene doublesex has been identified on an autosome and analyzed. Whereas the Drosophila doublesex gene is regulated by activation of splicing in females, the Bombyx doublesex gene (Bmdsx) encodes female- and male-specific mRNAs regulated via male-specific repression of splicing. The vitellogenin gene (Vg) is a target of the BmDSX protein, which directly binds to the Vg promoter. Furthermore, as ectopic expression of the male-type Bmdsx induces male-like transformation of the sexual organs, BmDSX may control sex-specific morphological characteristics in Bombyx. This suggests that although upstream events in Drosophila and Bombyx sex determination differ, similarities between the two species do exist in downstream genetic control of sex determination.  相似文献

We review and discuss current knowledge about sex determination in amphibians. The astonishing wide variety of mechanisms of genotypic sex determination is presented and discussed in an evolutionary context. We recall the natural occurrence of transitory juvenile hermaphroditism in some species. Our present knowledge of the mechanisms of sex determination in amphibians is compared to that in mammals. The influence of epigenetic factors, and especially temperature is highlighted. In amphibians, the influence of temperature on sexual differentiation, that can prevail over genotypic sex determination, remains poorly considered in publications. We suggest that studies on genetic and epigenetic factors of gonadal sex differentiation in amphibians could provide substantial information on the evolutionary process of sex determination mechanisms in current living vertebrates.  相似文献

Precise sexing--97% to 99% accuracy--of adult chest plates is possible when highly predictive costal cartilage ossification patterns are combined with four simple metric determinations. More than 1100 chest plate roentgenograms were evaluated for ossification pattern, fourth rib width, corpus width, sternal length and sternal area in an adult decedent population. An elementary, empirically obtained algorithm using the patternings and measurements, along with simple derivations (sternal length and area indices) was developed and then applied in chest plate sexing. This technique is not only easy, rapid and inexpensive, but it also results in a permanent and easily stored record.  相似文献

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) regulates the formation of osteoclasts and is involved in the regulation of bone resorption and remodeling. To investigate the feasibility of using silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae to produce recombinant osteoprotegerin as a oral administration drug, the rh-OPG was expressed in the larvae of silkworm through the silkworm baculovirus expression system, and was orally administered to mice. Compared with the control, oral administration of rh-OPG was effective to decrease serum calcium concentration in normal mice, and block the bone loss induced by the loss of estrogen in ovariectomized mice. These results indicated that oral administration of rh-OPG expressed in silkworm larvae had the proper bioactivity.  相似文献

Sex determination in the honeybee   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Charlesworth B 《Cell》2003,114(4):397-398
Sex determination in honeybees involves a multi-allelic locus, such that homozygotes develop as males and heterozygotes as females. In this issue of Cell, report the cloning of the sex-determining gene, csd. It codes for an SR protein, and different alleles have very different amino-acid sequences. Inactivating csd leads to development as a male.  相似文献

Using multivariate discriminant analyses of various skull length and breadth measurements and some measurements of the ischio-pubic and/or sacro-iliac pelvic bone segments, we remarkably improved the skeleton sex diagnosis on the larger bone samples from Prague, Brno, and Leipzig. According to NOVOTNY, a correct sexing of pelves is possible on the basis of combination of 2 type-morphognostic characters and 4 morphometric ones of the pubis, the ischium, and the greater sciatic notch (incisura ischiadica major). The symphysis region also yields several characters usable in discriminant functions which, in combination with the ventral border of the symphyseal surface, enable the sex diagnosis required by forensic medicine using one part of pelvis only.  相似文献

Sequences of alleles of the honey bee's primary sex-determining gene have extremely high diversity, with many amino acid variants, suggesting that different alleles of this gene have been maintained in populations for very long evolutionary times.  相似文献

Sex determination: the fishy tale of Dmrt1   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The idea that the Dmrt1 gene provides a unifying sex-determining mechanism in non-mammalian vertebrates is left high and dry by recent observations in fish.  相似文献

Sex determination from skeletal human remains by discriminant function analysis is one of the methods utilized in the forensic and osteoarcheological sciences. The purpose of the present study is to establish metric standards for sex determination for medieval Anatolian populations using scapular measurements. The database for this research consisted of 93 adult skeletal remains (47 males and 46 females) from the Dilkaya medieval collection. Four measurements were taken: maximum scapular height, maximum scapular breadth, glenoid cavity height, glenoid cavity breadth, and subjected to discriminant function analysis. All measurements demonstrated some degree of sexual dimorphism, with the highest accuracy of sex determination (94.8%) obtained using maximum scapular breadth. Overall accuracies of the functions ranged from 82.9% to 95.0%, with a higher accuracy rate obtained for female skeletons than for males. Population specific discriminant formulas were developed using combinations of measurements, which can be used in ancient Anatolian populations.  相似文献
