Altmann's model describing the relationship of social dominance to breeding behavior in some non-human primate species has been tested using data from the Cayo Santiago rhesus colony. Although some of the model's assumptions are clearly not met by field observations, a good fit is often found for groups containing relatively few sexually mature, non-pregnant females. It is suggested that genetic change could be rapid under conditions described by this model. It is estimated that a “beneficial mutation” could spread through all the breeding males in as little as six generations regardless of group size. The speed at which an allele can spread through the group is discussed in terms of the mean length of female receptivity.  相似文献

This paper reviews aspects of life history that influence the reproductive success of male rhesus monkeys. Recent theories propose that there is some optimum level of inbreeding for each population and that behaviors related to group transfer by males are the result of selection pressure toward such an optimum. Group changing by males is clearly linked to the effects of testosterone at sexual maturation. A male’s maternal genealogical rank is not consistently related to the age at which it leaves the natal group, but social interactions within the natal group may influence the age of departure. Choice of the new group is influenced by the operational sex ratio and the presence of maternal relatives. Rank in the new group is positively correlated with seniority. Seniority, in turn, is influenced by the rank of the male’s natal group, his mother’s genealogical rank, and the presence of male siblings in the new group. Much of this effect is due to the high mortality of males born to females and/or groups of low rank. Most studies show a positive association between male reproductive success and rank. Males from high-ranking groups and/or maternal genealogies that join groups containing brothers tend to remain in those groups longer, attain a higher rank, and probably achieve higher levels of reproduction than other males.  相似文献

The paternity of 202 of 220 offspring of rhesus monkeys housed in six separate half-acre field cages at the California Primate Research Center was determined by genetic marker techniques. Reproductive success of the adult males was statistically significantly correlated (r = 0.76, P <0.0005) with rank. Marked systematic changes in reproductive success were, however, observed for two adult males during the three years covered by this study. Based upon these results and those of another study, it is argued that changes in rank position typically follow, rather than precede, changes in reproductive success.  相似文献

Group changing behavior of maleMacaca mulatta was studied over a six-year period at the rhesus monkey colony on two coastal islands at La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Males first left their natal group at a mean age of 47 months and became solitary for the first time at a mean age of 64 months; all had left their natal groups by seven years of age. Age, mating season, sex ratios of adult males and females in the social bands, and geographical barriers all had significant effects on the group shifting. Population size, rank of mother or being an orphan did not significantly affect the changing process. Two factors, age (size) and seniority in the group, were important in determining a male's rank in his new group.  相似文献

Coccidioides immitis infection of the male reproductive tract is a rare entity that can evade diagnosis and pose a dilemma in management. Initially, patients are often evaluated for malignancy or other infections such as tuberculosis. In the past, surgery was the only management option for C. immitis infection of the male reproductive tract, but azole therapy now provides an adjunct or an alternative. We describe two patients who received azole therapy for C. immitis infection of the male reproductive tract. One received fluconazole for prostatic disease, while one received surgery followed by itraconazole for testicular disease. The activities of several pivotal nucleotide metabolizing enzymes from the testis and vasal sperm of rats treated for 7 wk with 0, 20 or 30 mg X kg X day gossypol acetic acid were examined. Total testicular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity increased 40% above control in the highest treatment group examined. However, the specific activity of the testis-specific isozyme of LDH, LDH-C4, decreased to 50 and 20% of control in the 20 and 30 mg X kg X day treatment groups, respectively. Basal soluble adenylate cyclase from a 100,000 X g supernatant of testis homogenate exhibited a 25% decrease in activity only in the 30-mg treatment group. Basal adenylate cyclase activity in the testicular membrane fraction increased 20 to 30% above control in response to gossypol administration. Testis membranes from the 20- and 30-mg treatment group exhibited a 2- and 4-fold greater activation of adenylate cyclase by guanine nucleotides. In vitro dose-response curves showed a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for inhibition of soluble testicular adenylate cyclase by gossypol of 400 microM in each treatment group. Caudal epididymal sperm adenylate cyclase activity decreased to 25% of control levels in gossypol-treated animals, and the in vitro sensitivity of the enzyme to the inhibitory effects of gossypol increased 4-fold. IC50 values for gossypol inhibition of sperm adenylate cyclase decreased from 200 microM in control animals to 75 and 50 microM in the 20 and 30 mg X kg X day treatment groups, respectively. Cyclic adenosine 3':5' monophosphate phosphodiesterase activity in caudal sperm increased 6-fold in the 20- and 30-mg treatment groups. These results demonstrate that nucleotide metabolizing enzymes in sperm are major targets for the actions of gossypol and provide a possible mechanism for the inhibition of normal sperm function by this compound.  相似文献

Twelve young (4-7 years of age) and 14 old (20-27 years of age) male and female rhesus monkeys were tested on seven cognitive tasks. Males and females performed similarly on tasks of object memory and executive function, but young males outperformed young females on a spatial memory task (Delayed Recognition Span Test) that requires the identification of a new stimulus among an increasing array of serially presented stimuli. This superior level of spatial ability in young males declined sharply with age, so that old males did not perform significantly better than old females. These findings in the nonhuman primate suggest that biological rather than sociocultural factors underlie the sex differences in cognition and their diminution with age.  相似文献

Hydroxyurea was given to pregnant rhesus monkeys and pregnant rats in regimens adjusted to produce similar degrees of teratogenicity, for the purpose of comparing the distribution of the drug in the females and their embryos. According, in rats 137 mg/kg/day ip on days 9-12 resulted in a drug half-life in maternal plasma of about 15 min and in embryos about 85 min, after the last injection; and in monkeys 100 mg/kg/days iv on days 23-32 resulted in drug half-life in maternal plasma estimated to be 120 min and in embryos 265 min, after the last injection. Using as a baseline of biological effects the minimal concentration known to inhibit DNA synthesis in rat embryos and cancer cells, namely 10(-4) M, it was calculated that the rat embryos in the present study were exposed to this level or more for approximately 12 h whereas the monkey embryos were exposed for approximately 100 h. Although the teratogenic effects were not identical in the two species, these data are interpreted to mean that rat embryos are teratogenically much more sensitive to hydroxyurea than monkey embryos. These observations have important implications in the selection of appropriate species for tests to estimate human teratogenic risks. The rat, which is currently the most widely used animal for such tests, displays sizeable differences from rhesue monkeys, which is one of the animals thought to be most like man in teratogenic susceptibility.  相似文献

Unfamiliar males were introduced during the breeding season to a stable heterosexual group of rhesus monkeys to determine how the presence of more dominant resident males affected their mating activity and how their entry was received by resident females. Initially, new males were allowed access to females under controlled conditions both in the presence and absence of resident males, simulating situations which may occur under natural conditions. Results indicated that the sexual activity, including ejaculation rate, of the new males was initially inhibited by the presence of more dominant, resident males, but these inhibiting properties did not carry over to periods when the resident males were absent and were diminished with time. Group females preferentially directed their behavior towards the new males throughout the study. These data suggest that although entry of new males into a stable group is at low rank, their subsequent reproductive success may not be reduced and that the association with resident females may facilitate male rhesus transfer between groups observed during the breeding season.  相似文献

Although the central and stable position of female rhesus monkeys in semi-free-ranging bands has been observed and described, the position of the developing male in the social group is not as well delineated. The present study is an attempt to describe interactions of 18 males with members of their families. Quantitative observations were made on one band (E) of rhesus monkeys on Cayo Santiago. Incidences of behavior recorded were joining, grooming, and threatening. The resulting data were analyzed by comparing the behavior of the males studied toward members of their genealogy as well as unrelated members of the social group. Behavior of family and non-relatives toward the males was also revealed. Statistical analysis revealed that the male subjects engaged in more positive social interactions within the matrifocal family than with other members of the genealogy, and in turn, more such behavior was observed within the genealogy than with unrelated monkeys. Threatening behavior within the genealogies was infrequent. Age effects were noted in that family members directed more interactions toward younger males and as males matured, they groomed more but joined family members less frequently. These data suggest mechanisms of socialization within the genealogy that may be different from those employed within the unrelated social group.  相似文献

The immunocytochemical localization of the milk protein alpha-lactalbumin in the male reproductive tract is described. Using a primary antiserum raised against highly purified rat milk alpha-lactalbumin, specific staining was consistently shown in the supranuclear Golgi region of the principal cells of the proximal caput epididymidis but only occasionally in epithelial cells from other regions of the duct. Staining was also found in the epididymal lumen and associated with spermatozoa. This luminal staining persisted throughout the distal caput, corpus and cauda epididymidis. Staining was rarely associated with spermatozoa in the efferent ducts and initial segment. Alpha-lactalbumin immunoreactivity was also detected in the seminiferous epithelium. Staining was confined to the Golgi-acrosome region of spermatids. These results indicate that an alpha-lactalbumin-like molecule, or molecules, is present in the male reproductive tract and that it is localized specifically in principal cells from the proximal caput epididymidis and germ cells from the seminiferous epithelium.  相似文献
