Uroleucon sonchi, an aphid species of Palaearctic origin, is a recent adventive to Australia. It is now widespread in anthropic areas of all states and the Australian Capital Territory, principally on sowthistles ( Sonchus spp.) but also on lettuce. It is occasionally parasitised by Aphidius sonchi Marshall (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Its possible economic importance in Australia is discussed. The species is also recorded for the first time from Norfolk and Philip Islands.  相似文献

Screening of 90 lettuce genotypes revealed great variation in resistance to the leaf aphids Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Uroleucon sonchi. Butterhead genotypes were usually, but not always, moderately to highly resistant to both aphid species. On the other hand mcjst crisphead genotypes had little or no resistance to both species. The results for the modern crisphead cultivar Marbello showed that it is possible to transfer resistance to M. euphorbiae from the butterhead to the crisphead type. Breeding programmes should benefit from the fact that in many cases resistance to M. euphorbiae and to U. sonchi, and in some cases also to other aphid species, was found in the same genotype. However, correlations between resistance scores for M. euphorbiae and U. sonchi were rather low, indicating that some components of resistance are specific to only one of the aphid species. Also within three groups of genotypes with resistance to Nasonovia ribisnigri, Myzus persicae and Pemphigus bursarius, respectively, large differences in resistance to M, euphorbiae and U. sonchi were found. The accumulation in one genotype of various resistance components to create cultivars with broad aphid resistance is a challenging and difficult task for practical plant breeding.  相似文献

Abstract  The recent arrival of lettuce aphid ( Nasonovia ribis-nigri (Mosley) ) in Australia has resulted in a pesticide-based protection program based upon seedling drenches of imidacloprid being promoted by many advisory agencies and accepted by growers as the only option available. This has caused concern about potential for incompatibility with existing integrated pest management programs for other pests in lettuce. Two neonicotinoid insecticides, imidacloprid (Confidor 200SC) and thiamethoxam (Actara), were applied to lettuce seedlings by drenching. A model aphid ( Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) ), used because N. ribis-nigri was not present in mainland Australia at that time, was periodically released onto the seedlings over 10 weeks. The effects of imidacloprid and thiamethoxam on larvae of predatory brown lacewings ( Micromus tasmaniae (Walker) ) which fed on the aphids were measured over 10 weeks by bioassay. Imidacloprid applied at a rate of 11 mL active ingredient (ai) per 1000 seedlings and thiamethoxam applied at 0.5 g ai per 1000 seedlings were highly toxic to M. tasmaniae that consumed aphids from the seedlings for up to 4 weeks after application. A 1/10 rate of imidacloprid (1.1 mL ai per 1000 seedlings) caused moderate toxicity for 3 weeks, and was then harmless to M. tasmaniae . Thiamethoxam and the high rate of imidacloprid caused almost complete mortality of aphids for about 6 weeks after application, and the low rate of imidacloprid displayed similarly high activity for about 3 weeks.  相似文献

Pistia stratioites , the water lettuce, is an important pantropical aquatic weed. It has been the target of successful classical biocontrol programmes utilizing an insect natural enemy collected in Brazil and introduced into Australia, Papua New Guinea and South Africa. Little attention was given to the fungal pathogens associated with this weed as potential biocontrol agents. An 11-month field survey in the state of Rio de Janeiro involving repeated visits to 12 sites, and a 2-month survey in the Amazonas Basin (Amazonas state) in Brazil, yielded only one pathogenic fungus on P. stratioites. This was identified as Cercospora pistiae. No previous record of this species has been made in Brazil nor in the New World. The fungus is described and its taxonomy and biocontrol potential discussed herein. C. pistiae is a damaging pathogen of water lettuce. Its distribution was restricted to two interconnected sites in Rio de Janeiro. A literature and herbaria survey yielded few fungi associated to water lettuce (8 species), probably reflecting a lack of adequate collection in the centre of origin of the plant. Linnaeus described nine species of Musca now placed in the Tephritidae. The Linnaean Collection was examined; a syntype of Tephritis hyoscyami and a possible syntype of Urophora solstitialis were identified. Syntypes of Tephritis arnicae, Urophora cardui and Rhagolelis cerasi were not found; specimens illustrated by Aldrovandi and de Reaumur are designated as lectotypes. No syntypic material of Euleia heracleii, Oxyna parietina, Terellia serratulae or Ensina sonchi could be found.  相似文献

利用苦苣菜蚜-苦苣菜蚜茧蜂混合种群系统模拟模型,通过改变种群参数、初始虫量和温度条件,探讨了蚜茧蜂产卵选择寄主龄期特性对整个种群系统行为的影响,并比较了这一特性与蜂产卵量两者的相对重要性。结果表明,蜂产卵对寄主龄期选择特性的改变可明显改变其对蚜虫种群增长影响的程度,当产卵选择特性改变,产卵量在多数情况下必须要大幅度直至成倍的增减,才能补偿其对蚜虫种群的控制作用。不过,当蜂产卵嗜好三龄、二龄、四龄若蚜时(这在蚜茧蜂中较普遍),其作用和产卵无选择性时基本相似。  相似文献

Striking varietal differences in susceptibility to attack by the lettuce root aphid, Pemphigus bursarius L., were first found in lettuces grown at Wellesbourne in 1955. Subsequent work has confirmed that White Favourite and Imperials E-4 and 19551-M are highly resistant; Imperial 45634-M, Continuity and Iceberg are markedly resistant. Midas, Salad Bowl and Imperial 4164 each appear to be a mixture of susceptible and resistant plants.
Immigrant winged forms of P. bursarius showed no preference for colonizing any particular variety of lettuce, and it seems that resistance to attack results from antibiosis.
It is suggested that varietal differences in the composition of root sap may account for the differences in susceptibility to lettuce root aphid, but analyses of water and alcohol extracts of root sap from resistant and susceptible lettuce varieties have not shown consistent differences.  相似文献

The effects of variations in the supplies of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium on the appearance, growth and yield of the tinted lettuce May King have been studied by Woodman (1936, 1939a, b, c, d). The present experiments were designed: (i) to test the main findings of the previous experiments in a comprehensive experiment, (ii) to discover how far certain deficiency symptoms noticed in May King were common to a non-tinted lettuce, and, (iii) and (iv), to ascertain what effects variations in the supply of calcium and magnesium respectively had on sand cultures of lettuce.  相似文献

Fermentation modes and microorganisms related to two typical free-floating aquatic plants, water hyacinth and water lettuce, were investigated for their use in ethanol production. Except for arabinose, sugar contents in water lettuce resembled those in water hyacinth leaves. Water lettuce had slightly higher starch contents and lower contents of cellulose and hemicellulose. A traditional strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae NBRC 2346, produced 14.4 and 14.9 g l(-1) ethanol, respectively, from water hyacinth and water lettuce. Moreover, a recombinant strain, Escherichia coli KO11, produced 16.9 and 16.2 g l(-1) ethanol in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation mode (SSF), which was more effective than the separated hydrolysis and fermentation mode (SHF). The ethanol yield per unit biomass was comparable to those reported for other agricultural biomasses: 0.14-0.17 g g-dry(-1) for water hyacinth and 0.15-0.16 g g-dry(-1) for water lettuce.  相似文献

Abstract  After the initial 1993 discovery of Frankliniella occidentalis , western flower thrips, in Australia, temporary chemical control permits were issued to facilitate their insecticidal control. However, these permits were based on established endemic pests of Australian horticulture rather than demonstrated efficacy against F. occidentalis , and laboratory bioassays of Australian field-collected F. occidentalis suggested that some permit application rates were too low to be effective. In 2002 and 2003 field-based trials were carried out in strawberry and lettuce to collect field-generated efficacy data to verify the laboratory conclusions. It was found that by increasing field application rates above the existing permit rate, efficacy was increased, but not for all insecticides and not for all thrips life stages. Increasing the rate of abamectin and endosulfan in strawberry increased control of adults and larvae and increasing the rate of endosulfan in lettuce increased efficacy against larvae only. Spinosad was effective at both rates tested in strawberry, suggesting that the current permit rate could be reduced. The ability to use reduced rates may be useful if used in combination with Integrated Pest Management programs.  相似文献

Cultivated peatland (Histosol) in Southern Québec (Canada) is a rapidly declining non-renewable resource used to grow most Canadian lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., Asteraceae). Rolled-rye (Secale cereale L., Poaceae) cover crop is one of the conservation practices proposed to reach a more sustainable lettuce production, but the overall impact on the agroecosystem remains poorly studied in Histosols. We assessed multiple effects of rolled-rye cover crop on the trophic chain associated with the lettuce aphid, Nasonovia ribisnigri (Mosley) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a major pest of lettuce. During one growing season and through two consecutive lettuce crops, we monitored in situ the impacts of rolled-rye cover crop on insect fauna and lettuce quality. We used visual scouting and yellow pan traps to assess plant colonization by N. ribisnigri, its natural enemies, and alternative prey. Exclusion cage experiments were also conducted to measure aphid fitness and population growth. Under greenhouse conditions, following cover crop removal, we examined potential lingering effects of rye within the soil on lettuce plants and N. ribisnigri. In situ experiments showed that rolled-rye cover crop has the potential to inhibit N. ribisnigri field colonization and recruit natural enemies and alternative prey in the first lettuce crop. Rye also reduced aphid fitness as well as lettuce foliar amino acid concentration and weight. For the second lettuce crop, an almost 50% reduction in N. ribisnigri abundance was observed with the use of rolled-rye cover crop. In greenhouse experiments, no persistent effect of rye was observed on the quality of lettuce grown with soil collected under a cover crop, nor on the fitness of aphids inoculated on these lettuces. This study highlights the diversity of trophic effects rolled-rye cover crop may have on lettuce production in Histosols and the potential of rolled-rye cover crop as a cultural practice to reduce aphid populations. Mechanisms at play while underlining agronomic challenges regarding proper rye termination must be further explored to maintain high-performing lettuce yields.  相似文献

Lettuce root aphid, Pemphigus bursarius L., is a pest which sometimes causes considerable and widespread damage to crops of summer lettuce.
Its favourite primary host is Lombardy poplar. On hatching in spring, from eggs that have overwintered on this host, the fundatrices cause the development of hollow, flask-shaped galls on the leaf petioles. A fundatrix becomes enclosed within a gall, where it matures, and gives rise to between 100 and 250 young. These fundatrigeniae are all potential alatae and on developing wings leave the gall and migrate to lettuce and other secondary hosts; they reproduce rapidly.
Lettuce sown between mid-April and the end of May is most severely attacked, while lettuce sown in July escapes attack. The alternative secondary hosts belong to the Compositae, subfam. Liguliflorae, and although lettuce is preferred by the fundatrigeniae, Lapsana communis L. and Sonchus asper (L.) Hill often have big colonies of Pemphigus bursarius on their roots. The size of the mature apterae varies between hosts and is largest on lettuce and Sonchus asper.
All winged alienicolae are sexuparae and fly back to poplar. Thus alternative secondary hosts are not reservoirs for lettuce-infesting alatae.
The sexuparae begin appearing on lettuce from about the last week in August. They generally come up to the soil surface and settle around the 'collar' of the host plant, to mature and develop wings. Having flown back to the primary host, the sexuparae seek out crevices in the bark where they produce arostrate sexuales. The ovipara contains one egg, and after mating she crawls as far into the bark crevice as possible and oviposits.  相似文献

为探讨利用趋避作用防治烟粉虱的可能性,进行了3方面试验:1)烟粉虱Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) 对黄瓜、花椰菜、油菜和莴苣等4种蔬菜的寄主选择性; 2)互喷烟粉虱不同嗜好的寄主植物汁液对其寄主选择性的影响; 3)不同间作方式对黄瓜叶上烟粉虱成虫密度的影响。结果表明,烟粉虱对供试植物有明显的选择性,其嗜好程度为花椰菜>黄瓜>油菜>莴苣。喷施莴苣和花椰菜汁液对烟粉虱的寄主选择性均有显著影响,喷施莴苣原液后,花椰菜和黄瓜上的成虫数分别减少79.6%和87.4%,花椰菜上的着卵量减少84.3%;喷施花椰菜原液后,莴苣上的成虫数和着卵量分别增加82.4%和79.2%,表明不同蔬菜中的内含物是引起烟粉虱对寄主选择性的重要原因。在黄瓜中间作莴苣可使黄瓜叶上烟粉虱成虫数平均减少76.5%;间作花椰菜时,通过诱集作用,也可使黄瓜叶上的成虫数平均降低69.7%。这些结果为利用喷施蔬菜汁液和间作方式控制烟粉虱危害提供了理论依据。  相似文献

Bacterial leaf spot of lettuce, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vitians, is a devastating disease of lettuce worldwide. Since there are no chemicals available for effective control of the disease, host-plant resistance is highly desirable to protect lettuce production. A total of 179 lettuce genotypes consisting of 29 leaf, 15 crisphead, one stem, 21 romaine, and 113 butterhead types were evaluated for response to X. c. vitians. One source of high resistance and five sources of moderate resistance were identified with four being butterhead lettuce and two leaf lettuce. The population genetic structure based on 350 expressed-sequence-tag-derived single nucleotide polymorphism generated two clades: Clade I and Clade II. The butterhead type was genetically distinct from romaine and crisphead types, while the leaf type was found to frequently exchange genes with other types through the history of breeding. Association mapping identified one single nucleotide polymorphism (QGB19C20.yg-1-OP5) associated with disease severity in Q general linear model and Q + K mixed linear model. Two SNP markers (Contig15389-1-OP1 and Contig6039-19-OP1) were associated with the resistance in the leaf lettuce PI 358000-1 which had no disease symptoms. The marker QGB19C20.yg-1-OP5 is in linkage group 2, while both of Contig15389-1-OP1 and Contig6039-19-OP1 are in linkage group 4. The resistant lines and the associated SNPs should be useful to develop resistant cultivars to battle against the devastating disease in lettuce.  相似文献

研究以生菜(Lactuca sativa L.)为考察对象, 探讨纳米氢氧化铜[nano-Cu(OH)2]不同暴露浓度(0、1和50 mg/L)与时间(7d、14d、21d和28d)对水培生菜生长变化的影响。在生菜叶片涂抹nano-Cu(OH)2过程中发现, 暴露初期(0—14d)Cu主要富集于生菜的老叶(靶器官)中, 且导致老叶失绿泛黄。同时, 老叶中的Cu会不同程度地向新叶(P<0.05)与根(P>0.05)中转移。在暴露后期(14—28d), nano-Cu(OH)2胁迫对生菜产生不可逆的损伤致使生菜老叶干枯变黄脱落。虽然老叶的脱落阻断了Cu在生菜体内进一步的富集, 但前期累积在老叶中的Cu会继续向新叶与根中转移。在28d的nano-Cu(OH)2暴露期间, 生菜主要通过调控体内超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)和过氧化物酶(POD)的含量来抵御Cu的胁迫伤害, 且nano-Cu(OH)2暴露对生菜生长表现出低浓度促进和高浓度抑制的效应。研究表明, nano-Cu(OH)2对生菜的主要致毒机理来源于它溶出的Cu离子。  相似文献

A new phytotoxic enol tautomer of 4-pyridylpyruvic acid, named ascosonchine, was isolated from the culture filtrate of Ascochyta sonchi. Such a leaf pathogen is a potential biocontrol agent of Sonchus arvensis, a perennial herbaceous weed occurring throughout the temperate regions of the world. Ascosonchine, characterised as (Z)-2-hydroxy-3-(4-pyridyl)-2-propenoic acid by spectroscopic methods, showed selective herbicidal properties, that are not associated with antibacterial, antifungal or zootoxic activities.  相似文献

The symptoms caused by dandelion yellow mosaic virus on cultivated lettuce, Lactuca serriola and L. virosa , are described and compared with those caused by lettuce mosaic virus. Lettuce is much more susceptible than dandelion to the yellow mosaic virus; no infections of dandelion were obtained by mechanical inoculation and only three by aphides, whereas infection of lettuce is regularly obtained by aphides and by inoculation provided an abrasive is used. Myzus ornatus, M. ascalonicus and Aulacorthum solani transmitted dandelion yellow mosaic virus but not lettuce mosaic virus, whereas Myzus persicae transmitted the latter but not the former. Nasonovia ribicola , the common lettuce aphis, transmitted neither. Aphides became infective only after feeding periods of some hours on the diseased plants and ceased to be infective within an hour of the infective feeding. Their efficiency as vectors was not increased by a preliminary starving period, as happens with Myzus persicae and lettuce mosaic virus. Lettuce mosaic virus was found in most samples of commercial seed, which explains its prevalence; no evidence was found for the seed-transmission of dandelion mosaic virus and it is doubtful if it occurs, for infected lettuce are so severely affected that they rarely set seed.

Nymphs and alates of aphid Nasonovia ribisnigri (Mosley) (Homoptera: Aphididae) were tested on 10 lettuce cultivars with N. ribisnigri resistance gene Nr and 18 cultivars without the resistance gene in various bioassays. Bioassays used whole plants, leaf discs, or leaf cages to determine susceptibility of commercial lettuce cultivars to N. ribisnigri infestation and to evaluate screening methods for breeding lettuce resistance to N. ribisnigri. Resistant and susceptible plants were separated in 3 d when using whole plant bioassays. Long-term (> or =7 d) no-choice tests using leaf cages or whole plants resulted in no survival of N. ribisnigri on resistant plants, indicating great promise of the Nr gene for management of N. ribisnigri. Effective screening was achieved in both no-choice tests where resistant or susceptible intact plants were tested separately in groups or individually and in choice tests where susceptible and resistant plants were intermixed. Leaf discs bioassays were not suitable for resistance screening. All lettuce cultivars without the resistance gene were suitable hosts for N. ribisnigri, indicating the great importance of this pest to lettuce production and the urgency in developing resistant lettuce cultivars to manage N. ribisnigri.  相似文献

By using enriched genomic libraries, microsatellite-containing sequences were isolated from lettuce (Lactuca sativa) with high efficiency. With this approach, a sizeable fraction (up to 55%) of the clones contained a microsatellite. In about half of these clones, primers could be designed for PCR amplification of the microsatellite. This yielded 28 primer sets amplifying unambiguously scorable products, of which 26 showed polymorphisms in a test set of six lettuce varieties. Practically all microsatellite-amplifying primer sets yielded products in lettuce's nearest relative, L. serriola, but only half of the primer sets yielded products in the more distant species L. saligna and L. virosa. An average polymorphism information content (PIC) value of 0.55 and an average number of 3.5 alleles per locus were in the normal range for a self-fertilizing species like lettuce. In addition, the incidental cloning of a microsatellite-containing repeat family, apparently specific for Lactuca, is reported and the implications for the efficient retrieval of single-locus microsatellite sequences are discussed. The microsatellite loci isolated will be useful for distinguishing lettuce cultivars and for screening diversity of genetic resources.  相似文献

A new species group of Pison (comprising P. caliginosum Turner from Australia and Norfolk I., P. mandibulatum Turner from southwestern Australia, and P. pyrrhicum sp.n. and P. weiri sp.n. from northern Australia) is recognised. A lectotype is selected for P. mandibulatum . All species possess an apically broad mandible unique within the genus. Nothing is known of the nesting biology of these species.  相似文献
