The cambium in black locust consists of several layers of cells at all times. Cambial reactivation (division) is preceded by a decrease in density of cambial cell protoplasts and cell wall thickening but not by cell enlargement. During the resumption of cambial activity, periclinal divisions occur throughout the cambial zone. Early divisions contribute largely to the phloem side. The period of greatest cambial activity coincides with early wood formation. Judged by numerous collections made during two seasons (October, 1960-October, 1962) the seasonal cycle of phloem development is as follows. Phloem differentiation begins in early April, ends in late September. The amount of phloem produced is quite variable (range: 1-10 bands of sieve elements per year). Cessation of function begins with the accumulation of definitive callose in the first-formed sieve elements and spreads to those more recently formed. By late November all but the last-formed sieve elements are collapsed. All sieve elements are collapsed by mid-winter and before the resumption of new phloem production in spring. Phloem differentiation precedes xylem differentiation by at least 1 week, and apparently functional sieve elements are present 3 weeks before new functional vessel elements. Xylem and phloem production ends simultaneously in most trees.  相似文献

Secondary Growth in Bougainvillea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The anomalous secondary growth was studied in roots and stemsof two species of Bougainvillea. The anomalous cambia arisesuccessively in centrifugal order, each originating among thederivatives of the preceding cambium. Each cambium layer functionsbidirectionally producing xylem towards the inside of the axisand phloem towards the outside. The sequence of production ofvascular cells is the following: (1) conjunctive tissue andxylem fibres towards the inside; (2) phloem towards the outside;(3) additional xylem with vessels towards the inside and additionalphloem towards the outside. The new cambia arise outside theoldest phloem cells of a given increment. This phloem may benonfunctional and crushed at that time. The phloem and the xylemdifferentiate from radially seriated derivatives produced sequentiallyby tangential divisions in the cambium. Divisions among thephloem initials and growth readjustments in the differentiatingxylem obscure the radial seriation to a moderate extent.  相似文献

Cambial structure and activity of Ficus rumphii Blume vary withthe changes in local climate. The cambial cells start swellingearly in April prior to the onset of periclinal divisions whichare most frequent in August. Cell division stops in October.During the growth season, initiation as well as cessation ofthe phloem production precedes that of xylem. A moderately hightemperature is correlated with the cambial reactivation. Onceinitiated, the activity continues at relatively low temperatures.Hot and dry environment favours the phloem production, whereashot and moderately humid conditions induce xylogenesis. Thesize and relative proportion of cambial initials also changewith season. Fusiform initials are shorter and broader duringthe rainy season (July–September) than for the rest ofthe year. Multiseriate and triseriate rays, as also the tallrays, outnumber the other types of rays throughout the year. Ficus rumphii, vascular cambium, phenology, climatic variation  相似文献

Samples of a mature specimen of Kalopanax pictus, a ring-poroushardwood, were studied to compare the respective lengths offusiform cambial cells and vessel elements in the stem. Thelengths of dormant and reactivated fusiform cambial cells weremeasured with a confocal laser scanning microscope in tissuethat had been macerated by digestion with pectinase and in thicktangential sections. The lengths of early wood and late woodvessel elements were measured in tissues that had been maceratedby Franklin's method. The vessel elements and fusiform cambialcells varied considerably in length within individual samples. The mean length of early wood vessel elements corresponded tothat of fusiform cells in the dormant cambium but not in thereactivated cambium. Significant differences were observed betweenthe mean lengths of dormant and reactivated fusiform cambialcells, between those of reactivated fusiform cambial cells andearly wood vessel elements, between those of reactivated fusiformcambial cells and late wood vessel elements, and between thoseof early wood and late wood vessel elements. The frequency distributionsof lengths of cambial cells were bimodal and differed from thoseof vessel elements, which more closely resembled a normal distribution. The proportion of shorter lengths was higher in the reactivatedcambium than in the dormant cambium, the early wood and thelate wood vessel elements. Our results do not suppot the hypothesisthat the lengths of early wood vessel elements in ring-poroushardwoods change during differentiation. The similar rangesof recorded lengths suggest that short and long vessel elementsmight be derived directly from short and long cambial cells, respectively. A study was made of cambial activity, the localization of storage starch around the cambium, and the localization and occurrence of microtubules in cambial cells from dormancy to reactivation in locally heated (22–26 °C) stems of the evergreen conifer Abies sachalinensis. Heating induced localized reactivation of the cambium in the heated portions of the stem. Erect ray cambial cells resumed cell division 1 d prior to the reactivation of fusiform cambial cells and procumbent ray cambial cells. The re-initiation of the division of fusiform cambial cells occurred first on the phloem side. During the heat treatment, the amount of storage starch decreased in procumbent ray cambial cells and in the phloem parenchyma adjacent to the cambium but increased in fusiform cambial cells. Preprophase bands of microtubules, spindle microtubules and phragmoplast microtubules were observed both in erect ray cambial cells and in procumbent ray cambial cells. By contrast, no evidence of the presence of such preprophase bands of microtubules was detected in fusiform cambial cells. The results suggest that the localized heating of stems of evergreen conifers might provide a useful experimental model system for studies of the dynamics of cambial reactivation in intact trees. Developmental changes in the vascular cambium of Polygonum lapathifolium were determined primarily by an analysis of the secondary xylem. The cambium and xylem consist of fascicular and interfascicular regions in this herbaceous dicotyledon. Near the pith vessels are restricted to the fascicular regions of the xylem. During secondary growth vessels are formed in some radial files in the interfascicular regions. Anticlinal divisions are of two types, oblique and lateral. In interfascicular files consisting of fibers only, about two-thirds of the anticlinal divisions are oblique. The oblique partition averages 31% of the length of the dividing initials. In interfascicular files consisting of vessel elements and fibers, there are almost equal numbers of oblique and lateral divisions. The oblique partition averages 37% of the length of the dividing initials in these files. Lateral divisions account for approximately three-fifths of the anticlinal divisions in the fascicular regions, consisting of vessel elements and fibers. The partitions formed in oblique anticlinal divisions average 64% of the length of the dividing cells in the fascicular regions. The frequency of anticlinal division is much higher in files consisting of vessel elements and fibers than in those consisting of fibers only. There is no loss of fusiform initials, except by ray formation. Ray initiation occurs by simple subdivision of fusiform initials. The findings are discussed in relation to the developmental changes in the vascular cambium in plants of different habits.  相似文献

The effect of exogenous ethephon on cambial activity, xylem production and ray population in young shoots of Leucaena leucocephala was investigated anatomically. The application of ethephon showed a diphasic effect on cambial activity and xylogenesis in a dose dependent manner. Lower concentration of ethephon enhanced cambial activity while high concentrations reduced cambial cell divisions and daughter-cell differentiation. High ethephon concentration also resulted in shorter vessel elements, thick walled fibers and phenolic accumulation in ray cells and vessel elements, whereas low concentration allowed elongation of fibers and vessel elements. The density of rays increased significantly with increase in ethylene concentration. The evaluation of longitudinal sections of cambial zone in ethephon treated plants showed high frequency of transformation of fusiform initials into ray initials through divisions and segmentation, resulting in high ray frequency in both xylem and phloem. The present study demonstrates that ethylene plays an important role in regulating secondary vascular tissue composition by reducing the population of fusiform initials in the cambium.  相似文献

Seasonal development of phloem in scots pine stems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The formation of phloem was studied for two years in stems of 50 to 60 year old trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) growing in nature. The development of phloem of the current year begins 10 to 20 days before the xylem formation and is completed with the termination of shoot growth in the end of June. Observations over the seasonal activity of cambium producing sieve cells of phloem and duration of their differentiation as compared to the xylem derivatives of cambium have shown that the maxima of formation of phloem and xylem cells could coincide or not coincide by season, while the activities of their differentiation were always in antiphase. The sieve cells of early phloem were separated from those of late phloem by a layer of tannin-containing cells, which are formed simultaneously with the formation of late xylem cells by the cambium. Seasonal dynamics of accumulation of starch grain in structural elements of the phloem is related to the xylem development. The content of metabolites in differentiating and mature phloem elements, in the cambium zone, and in the xylem cells growing in the radial direction depended on cell specificity, stage of their development, and type of forming wood, early or late, which differ in the cell wall parameters and, hence, requirement of assimilates. Significant differences were described between the content of low molecular weigh carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids, and phenol compounds using two methods of calculation: per dry weight and per cell.  相似文献

The dormant cambial zone consisted of 5–6 cell layers in the main stem of Pinus sylvestris L. trees that were ca. I00 years old. Time of cambial reactivation was comparable at one (bottom) and 8 (top) meters above the ground. In spring, when the cambium reactivated, the number of cambial cells slightly increased and phloem cells were formed. The production of xylem cells followed 3–4 weeks later. The formation of xylem cells decreased, whereas that of phloem cells increased between late June and early July. Cambial reaction in 1-year-old cuttings that were debudded and treated apically with IAA in lanolin was similar to that in the ca. 100-year-old main stem. However, in debudded cuttings treated with plain lanolin, the number of cells in the carnbial zone decreased during the first week of culture, and only a few phloem cells were formed. Later, the fusiform cambial cells of the cambial zone were divided transversely and lost their typical morphology. It is proposed that some factor(s) from roots may stimulate the initiation of cambial cell division, because when the cambium reactivated, the number of cambial cells slightly increased in the ca. 100-year-old main stem, but decreased in the 1-year-old cuttings.  相似文献

Phytolacca dioica L., an evergreen tree of the Phytolaccaceae, is one of the species of Phytolacca which shows anomalous secondary thickening in its stem. This mode of thickening has been regarded as successive cambial activity or alternatively, in some more recent interpretations, as thickening by unidirectional activity of a cambial zone. The stem thickening of P. dioica is of the former type. The cambium produces fascicular strands, showing centrifugal differentiation of xylem and centripetal differentiation of phloem on opposite sides of the cambial layer, and rays are produced between the fascicular areas. In both xylem and phloem the younger elements are closer to the cambium than the older elements. Succeeding cambia arise periodically by periclinal divisions in a layer of parenchyma cells two or three cells beyond the outermost intact phloem derived from the current cambium. Each cambium forms a few parenchyma cells on both sides before it forms derivatives which mature into lignified xylem elements or conductive elements of the phloem. The parenchyma thus formed toward the outside later becomes the site of the origin of the succeeding cambium. Only one or two layers of this phloem parenchyma go on to form the new cambium; the remaining cells accumulate between the outermost phloem and the cortex. P. weberbaueri shows stem structure similar to P. dioica. P. meziana, a shrub, shows normal stem structure.  相似文献

Cell length variation of sieve tube elements and phloem fibreswas studied in relation to their relative position within thebark in five species of Dalbergia. It was found that in fourout of the five species studied, the fibre elements occurringin the vicinity of cambium are longer than those occurring atthe periphery of the bark. D. latifolia is found to be an exception, since the shorter elements occur near the cambium while thelonger elements are found in the outer regions of the bark inthis species. In all the species fibre length declines markedlyin the middle region of the bark, and this is followed by asudden but temporary rise, except in D. latifolia in which theshortest elements occur both in the middle as well as near thecambium. The cell length variation of sieve tube cells does not followany recognizable trend in any of the species studied.  相似文献

Mature stems of Sesuvium sesuvioides (Fenzl) Verdc. were found to be composed of successive rings of xylem alternating with phloem. Repeated periclinal divisions in the parenchyma outside the primary phloem gave rise to conjunctive tissue and the lateral meristem that differentiate into the vascular cambium on its inner side. After the formation of the vascular cambium, the lateral meristem external to it became indistinct as long as the cambium was functional. As the cambium ceased to divide, the lateral meristem again became apparent prior to the initiation of the next cambial ring. The cambium was exclusively composed of fusiform cambial cells with no rays. In the young saplings, the number of cambial cylinders in the axis varied from the apex to the base, indicating formation of several rings within the year. In each successive ring of the lateral meristem, small segments differentiated into the vascular cambium and gave rise to vessels, axial parenchyma, fibres and fibriform vessels towards the inside, and secondary phloem on the outer side. In the old stems, non‐functional phloem of the innermost rings was replaced by a new set of sieve tube elements formed by periclinal divisions in the cambial segments associated with the non‐functional phloem. In some places the cambial segments completely differentiate into derivatives leaving no cambial cells between the xylem and phloem. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 548–555.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The timing of cambial reactivation plays an important role in the control of both the quantity and the quality of wood. The effect of localized heating on cambial reactivation in the main stem of a deciduous hardwood hybrid poplar (Populus sieboldii x P. grandidentata) was investigated. METHODS: Electric heating tape (20-22 degrees C) was wrapped at one side of the main stem of cloned hybrid poplar trees at breast height in winter. Small blocks were collected from both heated and non-heated control portions of the stem for sequential observations of cambial activity and for studies of the localization of storage starch around the cambium from dormancy to reactivation by light microscopy. KEY RESULTS: Cell division in phloem began earlier than cambial reactivation in locally heated portions of stems. Moreover, the cambial reactivation induced by localized heating occurred earlier than natural cambial reactivation. In heated stems, well-developed secondary xylem was produced that had almost the same structure as the natural xylem. When cambial reactivation was induced by heating, the buds of trees had not yet burst, indicating that there was no close temporal relationship between bud burst and cambial reactivation. In heated stems, the amount of storage starch decreased near the cambium upon reactivation of the cambium. After cambial reactivation, storage starch disappeared completely. Storage starch appeared again, near the cambium, during xylem differentiation in heated stems. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that, in deciduous diffuse-porous hardwood poplar growing in a temperate zone, the temperature in the stem is a limiting factor for reactivation of phloem and cambium. An increase in temperature might induce the conversion of storage starch to sucrose for the activation of cambial cell division and secondary xylem. Localized heating in poplar stems provides a useful experimental system for studies of cambial biology.  相似文献

A study was made, in a cool-temperate zone, of the extent of cell division in the cambium, the extent of differentiation of cambial derivatives, and the localization of storage starch around the cambium in locally heated (22–26°C) stems of the evergreen conifer Abies sachalinensis (Schmidt) Masters during cambial dormancy and immediately after natural reactivation of the cambium. In locally heated regions of stems during cambial dormancy, heating induced localized reactivation of the cambium. However, the cells in the heated and reactivated cambium stopped dividing soon after only a few cells had been generated. In addition, no differentiation of the xylem and the disappearance of starch from storage tissues around the cambium were observed. In regions of stem that had been locally heated after natural reactivation of the cambium, cell division continued in the cambium and earlywood tracheids with a large radial diameter and secondary walls were formed, with abundant starch in the storage tissues around the cambium. Our results suggest that the extent of both cell division in the cambium and cell differentiation depends on the amount of starch in storage tissues around the cambium in the locally heated stems of an evergreen conifer growing in a cool-temperate zone.  相似文献

Factors affecting septation (cell division) of the tendril whichfacilitates the organic connection with the host were studiedin a root parasite Aeginetia indica L. Transverse cell division, which occurs perpendicular to the long axis of the tendril, was promoted by additions of sucrose, glucose and cytokininsto the basal medium. Longitudinal cell division of the tendril, which takes place parallel or obliquely to the long axis, wasstimulated by cytokinins, but not by sucrose. The latter typeof cell division was frequent in basal and sub-basal cells ofthe tendril but was extremely rare in apical cells. The orientationof the planes of these cell divisions was closely related tocell shape. Abnormal growth of the tendril was seen in germinatingseeds grown for six weeks or more in media containing both Miscanthus(a host) root extract and cytokinin. The ontogeny of the air pores and air chambers of Marchantiapaleacea begins with the schizogenous development of protodermalintercellular spaces of the initial apertures, and is completedwith the formation of the air pores and giant sub-epidermalair chambers bearing numerous photosynthetic filaments. Intercellularspace formation commences from the thallus surface and proceedsinwards to the first internal layer of cells. The cells amongwhich spaces develop do not originate from one mother cell.Spaces are formed only in the regions of the intersection ofthe anticlinal walls of three, four, or sometimes more successivederivatives of S1, S3 and S4 segments of the apical cell, oneor two of which have been divided periclinally and the restanticlinally. Protodermal intercellular spaces appear in mostor all the corners of these cells, the anticlinal walls of whichexhibit an opposite disposition. The S1, S2, S3 and S4 segmentsare produced by definite divisions of a five-sided apical celland by a series of divisions give rise to initial cells of theinternal layers of the thallus and initial cells of the protodermaland sub-protodermal layers. The concept of a quiescent apicalcell cannot be accepted, since dividing apical cells have beenobserved, and the pattern of wall disposition of the thallusapex cannot be explained without the active participation ofthe apical cell. The air chambers are apparently of exogenous origin. They resultfrom the broadening of the bottom of the initial apertures bythe coordination of the rate of anticlinal divisions and growthof the protodermal and sub-protodermal cells surrounding theintercellular spaces of the initial apertures. The ontogenyof the pore rings starts at an advanced stage of air chamberformation not from a mother cell but from the cells which surroundthe closed entrance of the air chamber, by a shift of the planeof division from anticlinal to periclinal. Before the periclinaldivisions a new axis of growth perpendicular to the thallussurface is established in the mother cells of the pore. By a polarized growth into the air chamber followed by periclinaldivisions, the cells of the floor form initial cells of thephotosynthetic filaments. The latter divide again to form singleor branched photosynthetic filaments. Marchantia paleacea, air pore, air chamber  相似文献

The diffuse-porous maple and the ring-porous ash showed first cambium cell divisions after bud break contemporaneously in the second half of April. However, in the ash, a few cells scattered throughout the dormant cambium zone had already distinctly enlarged by the end of March. Later on these cells developed further into earlywood vessels prior to the onset of cell divisions. The question about which criteria can be used as an indication of cambium reactivation will be discussed.  相似文献
