The wild bruchid beetle, Bruchidius dorsalis Fahraeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), has a multivoltine life cycle and overwinters in several developmental stages in the middle part of Japan. We investigated the incidence of diapause under different conditions of photoperiod (from L8:D16 to L16:D8) and temperature (at 20 °C and 24 °C). Our experiments revealed the following results: (1) B. dorsalis entered diapause at the final (late fourth) instar larva under short photoperiods, (2) the larval diapause incidence was dependent on temperature (critical photoperiods were 12.5 h at 20 °C and 12 h at 24 °C), (3) some individuals did not enter diapause under short-photoperiod conditions at 24 °C, and (4) the sensitive stages to the photoperiod were from the late egg stage to the early first instar larva. Based on these results, we discuss not only the evolution of a complex overwintering strategy inB. dorsalis but also the domestication process of stored-bean pests.  相似文献

A system is described for rapid re-attachment of the rhodophycean alga Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. on artificial or natural substrata. This method is applicable to industrial cultivation of this species. The function of rhizoidal clusters and the origin of germlings from the apical portion of the thalli are analyzed in relation to the re-attachment process. The role that re-attachment might play in the maintenance and spreading of natural populations and in the observed anomalies of the life-history of this species is discussed.  相似文献

Effects of photoperiod and cold exposure on diapause termination, post-diapause development and reproduction in Loxostege sticticalis were examined. Larvae were reared at diapause inducing condition (22 °C, L:D 12:12) consistently or transferred to long day photoperiod (L:D 16:8) and darkness (L:D 0:24) respectively, after entering into diapause. Diapause was terminated in approximately 40% of the larvae after 36 days, and no significant differences were observed between photoperiods, suggesting larval diapause was terminated spontaneously without being induced by photoperiods. Cold exposure significantly hastened diapause termination. The diapause termination incidence increased significantly with peaks of 98% at both 5 °C and 0 °C exposure for 30 days, as compared to 42% in controls not exposed to cold, while the mortality and number of days required for diapause termination decreased dramatically. The optimal low temperature exposure periods under 5 °C or 0 °C were 20 days and 30 days, showing a higher termination incidence and shorter time for diapause termination. This suggests that the low temperatures in winter play an important role in diapause termination under natural conditions. The threshold temperatures for post-diapause development in prepupae and pupae were 9.13 °C and 10.60 °C respectively, with corresponding accumulations of 125 and 200 degree-days. Adults that experienced larval diapause significantly delayed their first oviposition, oviposition period was prolonged, and the lifetime number of eggs laid was decreased, however both males and females have significantly longer longevity. The field validation of diapause termination, the degree-days model, and the relationship between diapause and migration in L. sticticalis were also discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Growth, gonadosomatic index and plasma steroid profiles in male ayu,Plecoglossus altivelis, cultured under short/long photoperiods and cool/warm temperatures were determined. Juvenile males were assigned to each of four different photoperiod/temperature regimes (16 L/18°C, 16 L/24°C, 8 L/18°C and 8 L/24°C) at random. Fish were killed and examined bi-weekly over the following 16 weeks. Mean body weight in the 16 L/18°C treated fish was the highest among four treated groups. No significant differences between body weights of the 16 L/24°C, 8 L/18°C and 8 L/24°C treated groups were observed. Ayu in the 8 L/18°C treated group had the highest values of gonadosomatic index, plasma testosterone (T) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OH P). No significant differences of plasma E2 were observed among the treated groups. In the 8L/18°C and 8L/24°C groups, peak levels of 17-OH P occurred after 12 and 14 weeks of treatment, respectively. No peak levels of plasma T and 17-OH P were observed in 16 L/18°C or 16 L/24°C treated ayu. Spermiation occurred only in ayu with 8 L/18°C treatment. The data suggest that testicular development in ayu is temperature and photoperiod dependent: short photoperiod and cool temperature favour gonadal development.  相似文献

The effect of four prediapause temperatures (18, 22, 26 and 30°C) on the photoperiodic response of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), was studied under controlled conditions. The highest rates of diapause were recorded, for all day-lengths, at temperatures of 22 and 26°C while relatively lower rates of diapause were elicited at 18 and 30°C. The same trend was demonstrated by projecting the values of the critical photoperiod which induces 50% diapause (=CPhP50) over the prediapause temperature. The change in diapause incidence as a function of photoperiod, at all prediapause temperatures, exhibited a response characteristic of long-day insects, i.e. high rates of diapause at short days (12–13.5 h) and a decrease in diapause incidence at long days (14–15 h). The results for temperatures 22, 26 and 30°C support the view that lower prediapause temperatures enhance diapause induction, at a give photoperiod, while higher temperatures tend to avert or diminish the process. On the other hand, the low rates of diapause obtained at 18°C contradict this view. Nevertheless, high correlation was found between the laboratory evidence and field data, indicating the adaptability of the Israeli codling moth to subtropical climate.  相似文献

Adaptive changes in membrane physical properties in response to changing environmental temperature (e.g., inereased fluidity at low growth temperatures) are well known in poikilotherms; however, the timecourse of this response has received little attention. In this study the plasma membrane lipids of hepatocytes prepared from 20°C-acclimated trout were analyzed for phospholipid class and molecular species composition and metabolism after the cells were exposed to 5°C for 6 hours. Proportions of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine were not altered by in vitro incubation at either 5 or 20°C. Molecular species analysis revealed that proportions of 18:1/20:5-phosphatidylcholine were significantly lower in plasma membranes of 5°C incubated cells, while decreases in 16:0/20:4-phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified phosphatidylcholine species, and 16:0/16:0-phosphatidylethanolamine as well as increases in 16:0/16:1-phosphatidylethanolamine as well as increases in 16:0/16:1-phosphatidylcholine bordered on significance. Exogenous radiolabeled molecular species of phosphatidylcholine (16:0/16:0-phosphatidylcholine and 16:0/18:1-phosphatidylcholine) were converted into other species at both temperatures, and the formation of some was influenced by incubation temperature. For example, cells exposed to 5°C convert significantly more 16:0/16:0-phosphatidylcholine into 16:0/20:4-phosphatidylcholine and 18:0/16:1-phosphatidylcholine and less into 18:1/18:1-phosphatidylcholine and 16:0/22:6-phosphatidylcholine than cells incubated at 20°C. In addition, cells at 5°C metabolized 16:0/18:1-phosphatidylcholine to a lesser extent than those at 20°C. The profile of conversion products indicates that deacylation/reacylation, elongation and desaturation reactions all participate in this early membrane restructuring. The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis, enters facultative diapause as fully grown larvae in response to short-day conditions during the autumn. Our results showed that the critical night length for diapause induction in C. suppressalis was between 10 h 22 min and 10 h 45 min at 22, 25 and 28 °C, 11 h 18 min at 31 °C, and between 10 h 5 min and 10 h 20 min under field conditions (average temperature ranged from 27.2 to 30.7 °C). The diapause incidence declined in ultra-long nights (18-22 h scotophases) and DD, and increased in ultra-short nights (2-6 h scotophases) and LL. Moreover, we found that the third instar was the stage most sensitive to the photoperiod, and night length played an essential role in the initiation of diapause. Night-interruption experiments with a 1-h light pulse at LD 12:12 (light 12:dark 12) exhibited two troughs of diapause inhibition, with one occurring in early scotophase and the other in late scotophase. Field observations for six years showed that most larvae entered winter diapause in August in response to declining day lengths, despite the high temperatures prevailing during August. By periodically transferring the field-collected overwintering larvae to different photoperiods and temperatures, the results showed that photoperiod had a significant influence on diapause development during the early phase of diapause, while high temperature significantly accelerated the termination of larval diapause.  相似文献

Summary Breeding experiments with a temperate zone population of the marine insect Clunio marinus (stock Helgoland-North Sea from 54° N) demonstrated an onset of larval diapause under combined short day and low temperature conditions only (examined LD 8:16 with 7 or 10°C resp.). Long photoperiods (LD 16:8) at 7–10° C or higher temperatures in shorter photoperiods completely prevented any dormancy response. The diapausing larvae were still locomotory active and fed in their benthic environment; their metamorphosis, however, stopped during a specific stage of the early imaginal disc formation in the last instar. In the experiments, the diapause was maintained up to 5.5 months and longer. In nature, the termination may be mainly controlled by temperature rises during low tide and fine weather under long day conditions, at Helgoland generally in late April or early May. The dormancy response can be classified as a larval oligopause (sensu H.J. Müller) of a potentially multivoltine species. It is supposed that this kind of diapause control is more widely distributed in aquatic chironomids.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of culture temperature on feed intake, absorption, organismal growth, and tissue production of Lytechinus variegatus by culturing individuals at three different temperatures representing the normal range of temperature exposure in wild populations in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Large L. variegatus (ca. 42 + 0.6 mm diameter, 36 + 1.3 g wet weight, n = 97) were collected at St. Joseph Bay, Florida, in October 2001. Eight sea urchins were held individually in 1-L containers within an 80-L aquarium with recirculated synthetic seawater at 32-ppt salinity. Three aquaria with the containers were each placed in three incubators at temperatures of 16, 22, or 28 °C for 8 weeks. Sea urchins held at 22 °C had the highest rate of feed intake. Feed intake in individuals held at 16 °C decreased significantly during the first 2 weeks of exposure and then increased to values not significantly different from those held at 28 °C by week 6. The dry matter absorption efficiency of individuals held at 28 °C was significantly higher than those held at 16 °C or 22 °C. The percentage of organic matter in the feces did not vary significantly with temperature. Individuals increased significantly in diameter, wet weight, and gonad weight at all temperatures. The wet weights of individuals held at 22 °C were significantly higher than those held at 28 °C or 16 °C, which did not differ significantly. The gut weight varied inversely with temperature. The wet weight of gonads of individuals held at 22 °C was significantly higher than those held at 28 °C, but neither differed significantly from those held at 16 °C. Production efficiencies, both organismal and gonadal, were inversely proportional to temperature, indicating that the overall metabolic cost of production increased with increasing temperatures. Organism production efficiencies were lower and gonad production efficiencies were higher than those found in small sea urchins, emphasizing that patterns of nutrient allocation vary between small and large sea urchins. Physiological processes associated with feed intake, absorption, and nutrient allocations vary with temperature, but allow the sea urchins to maintain growth and gonad production at a variety of temperatures. These data suggest that temperatures near the upper limits do not promote efficient use of resources, an important consideration for future commercial culture. Since gonad (roe) production is the ultimate goal of many aquaculture operations, gonad production efficiencies will provide a valuable tool for evaluating the efficacy of various feeds and feeding conditions on gonad production.  相似文献

Stethorus japonicusKamiya (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an indigenous ladybird beetle in Japan, which feeds on many spider mite species. We evaluated the development, survivorship and life-history parameters of this lady beetle on a diet of eggs of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (red form) (Acari: Tetranychidae). In addition, the effect of short photoperiod on its reproduction was assessed. Survival rates from egg to adult were more than 71% at temperatures between 17.5 and 30 °C. The highest immature mortality was 100% at 35 °C followed by 76% at 15 °C and 52% at 32.5 °C. The lower threshold temperature for development from egg to egg-laying adult was 13.0 °C and the thermal constant was calculated as 238.7° days. Based on these data, the maximum number of generations that could complete development in a year under field conditions in Ibaraki, central Japan, would be between five and seven. The intrinsic rates of natural increase (rm) were 0.093 at 20 °C, 0.156 at 25 °C and 0.241 at 30 °C. Reproductive diapause was induced at photoperiods with light phases shorter than 13 h at 18 °C.  相似文献

Summary The effect of photoperiod on the upper thermal tolerance of two species of frogs was studied by using the critical thermal maximum (CTM) as the end point. Both species are heliotropic and from temperate climates, but Hyla labialis lives under a near constant tropical photoperiod while Rana pipiens lives under a varying temperatezone photoperiod. The CTM of both species was studied over a 24-hour period to determine if a rhythm of temperature tolerance exists. In all but one of the acclimatization conditions used, the CTM of R. pipiens was higher than that of H. labialis. This agrees with what is known of their thermal ecology. Photoperiod significantly affects the CTM of both species. For Rana pipiens long (LD 16:8) photoperiods result in significantly higher thermal tolerance than short (LD 8:16) or moderate (LD 12:12) photoperiods at both 15 and 25° C. H. labialis shows a different pattern, having highest CTM at 25°C, LD 12:12 and lowest at 15°C, LD 12:12. When acclimated to a short (LD 8:16) photoperiod certain aspects of the frogs' tolerance of high temperatures are altered. At the same acclimatization the CTM of R. pipiens is higher than that of H. labialis, except under a combination short light regime and low temperature, and H. labialis at LD 8:16 shows no thermal acclimation between 15 and 25°C. Significant variation in the CTM over a 24-hour period occurred in H. labialis acclimatized at 25°C, LD 12:12 and R. pipiens at 25°C, LD 8:16 and 15°C, LD 12:12. For both species the 24-hour rhythm of temperature tolerance, when it occurs at LD 12:12, might be of adaptive value. Times of highest thermal tolerance are in the late morning or early afternoon and lowest tolerance is during the dark period. For R. pipiens under the unnatural combination of 25°C, LD 8:16, the pattern is reversed. When all three significant cycles are phase shifted so that the times of highest tolerance coincide, the pattern of the curves is very similar.  相似文献

Experiments are described in which seedlings of Typha orientalis Presls were grown for up to 6 months under precise conditions of temperature and photoperiod; photosynthesis was by natural daylight and did not vary between treatments. Variable treatments were imposed either from the seedling stage or on large plants raised under constant conditions.In general, total dry matter production increased as photoperiod increased from 8 to 16 h and also as day or night temperature increased, maximum production occurring when there was a warm day (30 or 27°C) and a small temperature drop (to 22°C) at night. The distribution of dry matter was also markedly affected by the imposed variables, leaf growth being favoured by high temperatures (to 30°C) and long photoperiods, and production of roots and rhizomes by low temperatures (to 10°C) and short photoperiods. None of the treatments resulted in floral initiation. The results are considered in relation to growth in the natural habitat.  相似文献

The life cycle of Sericostoma personatum (Spence) was studied at 6 °C, 10 °C and 14 °C and at each temperature at 8 and 14 hrs daylength. Embryogenesis was not temperature dependent in the 12°–18°C range. Only 7 of 38 (app. 18%) had a direct development, the rest remained in diapause with partly developed larvae. Hatching success of single egg masses was over 95%. At 6 °C at both LDs, about 452 days are required for larval development. At 10 °C 370 days (LD 8/16), or 320 days (LD 14/10) and at 14° C 319 days (LD 8/16) and 295 days (LD 14/10) were required. Duration of instars III and IV was longer at 6 °C (both LDs), compared with all other groups. Vth instar larvae of the 14 °C (LD 14/10) group grew fastest. Instar VI larvae of the 10 °C short day group developed faster than all others. Instar VII larvae of both 14 °C groups and of the 10 °C long day group develop faster than the rest. Duration of pupal instar is only temperature dependent, regardless of light regime. The field life cycle of S. personatum may require 2–5 years. Larvae are night active. They feed on Coarse Particular Organic Material (CPOM) on the sediment surface at night. They release faeces (Fine Particular Organic Material, FPOM) into the sediment where they rest by day at a few cm depth. Their burrowing behavior thus contributes to the retention of FPOM in the stream channel. Daily food consumption at constant 10 °C is significantly dependent on night length (r 2 = 0.979, p < 0.05). Two factors thus may limit food consumption: in winter, low temperatures, and in summer short nights. The species thus avoids competition by day-active shredders and predation by day-active predators.  相似文献

Helix aspersa hibernates in Brittany (western France), where it may experience subzero temperatures. Studies on cold hardiness, although scarce in land snails, have shown a seasonal variation in supercooling ability, associated with high temperatures of crystallization (Tc). In the present work, two key environmental factors, temperature and photoperiod, were studied to elucidate, how they may affect the enhancement of supercooling ability in the snails from the end of summer to winter. Nine groups of adult snails were acclimated to different combinations of photoperiod (LD-16:8, LD-12:12, and LD-8:16 h) and temperature (15, 10, and 5°C). Temperature of crystallization, hemolymph osmolality, and water content were measured. The results demonstrate a significant effect of the photoperiod on Tc, i.e., shorter photoperiods induce lower Tc (LD-16:8 h, mean Tc = −3.0°C, SD = 2.0; LD-12:12 h, mean Tc = −4.3°C, SD = 1.9; LD-8:16 h, mean Tc = −5.2°C, SD = 1.9; n = 90), whereas the acclimation temperature had no effect. Measurements of hemolymph osmolality and water content showed that osmolality is negatively correlated with water content. Mechanisms such as dehydration are involved in the decrease of Tc. A declining photoperiod triggers a lower Tc, long before the onset of winter conditions. This response may have an adaptive component, allowing individuals to cope with the mild winters typically observed in oceanic regions.  相似文献

When the roots of rye plants grown at 20°C were cooled to 8°C the concentration of phospholipid in them more than doubled over a 7 d period in comparison with that in roots remaining at 20°C. The relative abundance of lecithin (PC) declined while that of phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) increased; this change was completed after 2 d cooling. Labelling with 32P suggested that turnover of phospholipids may be inhibited by low temperature. Acyl lipids contained an increased proportion of linolenic acid (18:3) and reduced proportion of linoleic acid (18:2) when roots were cooled at 8°C for 7 d. The ratio of these acids is a relatively more sensitive indicator of desaturation than is the double bond index. Cooling brought about no change in the abundance of the principal saturated acid, palmitic (16:0). In the first 3 days of cooling PC and PE desaturated markedly while there was no change in galactosyl and neutral lipids. Desaturation did not appear to be greatly sensitive to the concentration of dissolved O2 and was only partly inhibited in 8°C solutions where the oxygen concentration was lowered to 0.5–2.0%. Positional analysis of acyl chains in PC and PE showed that more than 90% of all 16:0 is associated with position I while 65% of the 18:2+18:3 is associated with position II. When roots are cooled the abundance of 18:3 increases in both chains but the relative distribution of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids remains constant in positions I and II. Photoperiodic induction of reproductive diapause at 18°C was investigated in fourOrius [Heteroptera: Anthocoridae] species.Orius insidiosus (Say) displayed a long-day response with a critical photoperiod between L11:D13 and L12:D12. Diapause in this species was terminated rapidly when the temperature and/or the daylength were increased.Orius majusculus (Reuter) also displayed a long-day response. The critical photoperiod fell between L14:D10 and L16:D8. Diapause in this species was not terminated within 14 days when both temperature and daylength were increased. InOrius albidipennis (Reuter) no diapause could be induced at photoperiods varying from L8:D16 to L16:D8. InOrius tristicolor (White) a high proportion of diapause was found at all photoperiods tested. The effect of temperature on photoperiodic induction of diapause was studied inO. insidiosus at L10:D14. Diapause occurred at 18°C, 21°C and 25°C, but not at 30°C. Again, diapause was terminated rapidly after transfer to 25°C/L16:D8. Exposing only the nymphal instars 1–5 to short daylength was not enough to induce diapause in the whole population ofO. majusculus. Orius predatory bugs are used as biocontrol agents against western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) [Thysanoptera: Thripidael, in greenhouses. The consequences of photoperiodic induction of diapause for the success of early season releases ofOrius are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Tahoe sucker, Catostomus tahoensis, were fed at three ration levels (starvation, 50% of repletion, and repletion) at three constant and cyclic temperature regimes (4–12°, 8°, 8–18°, 13°, and 13°–23°, 18° C) to examine growth rate and gross growth efficiencies. Growth rates increased with increasing temperature and ration level. Growth rates were not different between cyclic temperatures and the constant temperature equivalent to the mean of the cycle. Growth efficiencies were similar for cyclic and constant temperature regimes. Maintenance rations increased from 0.9% of the initial wet weight per day at low temperatures to 2.0 and 1.7% at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Assimilation efficiencies (not measured at low temperatures) did not differ between constant and cyclic temperatures. Tahoe sucker growth rates and assimilation efficiencies may not be enhanced in small streams because of this species' inability to mediate temperature cycles through behavioral thermoregulation.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and photoperiod on the rate of predation of nymphs and adults of the predator Macrolophus pygmaeus was studied using Myzus persicae prey feeding on egg-plant and pepper plants. The experiments were conducted at three photoperiods (16L:8D, 12L:12D and 8L:16D), three temperatures (20, 25 and 30 °C), and at 65% r.h. The rate of predation increased with temperature. Predation rate was affected by photoperiod on pepper but not on egg-plant. Females and fifth instar nymphs were the most voracious stages followed by third and fourth instar nymphs and males. First and second instar nymphs consumed far fewer aphids. Predation rate was higher on leaves of pepper than egg-plant, especially at 30 °C. Variation in the efficacy of this predator is discussed.  相似文献
