The larva and pupa of Achyrolimonia basispina (Alex.) are described for the first time. New data on the morphology of the larva and pupa of A. decemmaculata (Loew) are discussed, and the morphological characteristics of the genus are defined more exactly. The larvae of these species develop in the dead wood of deciduous trees and in the old carpophores of wood fungi.  相似文献

The morphology of the acrophallus, the distal portion of the male phallus carrying the phallotreme, was studied in 72 exemplar species representing 56 genera and subgenera of the flesh fly subfamily Sarcophaginae. For 42 of those species, scanning electron microscopy was used to clarify the phallic morphology. Terms used to describe the male genitalia were updated based on new interpretations of homology. Male genitalic characters, combined with other morphological characters of adult males and females and of larvae, were used to construct a phylogeny. The monophyly of the subfamily was supported, and some generic‐level sister‐group relationships proposed in the literature, but without previous cladistic analyses, were also supported. The genus Blaesoxipha Loew, as currently recognized, was not monophyletic in our analysis. The genus Helicobia Coquillett is synonymized with Sarcophaga Meigen syn. nov. and treated as a subgenus of the latter. The Sarcophaga subgenera Neobellieria Blanchard and Mehria Enderlein were not monophyletic. Many of the clades in the analysis were supported primarily or exclusively by male genitalic character states, highlighting the importance of the male genitalia as a source of morphological characters for sarcophagine phylogeny. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 158 , 740–778.  相似文献

Larvae are described for the first time for three species of the genus Lixus (L. bifasciatus, L. rubicundus, and L. subulatus). The larvae dwell in stalks of herbaceous plants. The larvae differ in the structure of the endocarina and prelabium and the chaetotaxy of the head and epipharynx. Analysis of larvae of the new and already described species of this genus has shown that the larva of L. bifasciatus shares some characters with the larvae of L. astrachanicus, and L. rubicundus, and the larva of L. subulatus, with that of L. bescrensis.  相似文献

Female imagines, subimagines, eggs and larvae of Electrogena antalyensis (Kazanci & Braasch) from Turkey are described for the first time. The results of a thorough analysis of larvae, based on the standard set of diagnostic characters for the identification of Electrogena species, are reported. The peculiarity of several characters places E. antalyensis in an isolated position within the genus Electrogena.  相似文献

The larval morphology and biology of two species of rhagionid flies (Diptera, Rhagionidae) from the Russian Far East are described for the first time. Larvae of Chrysopilus dives Loew develop in the tunnels of xylobiont insects in the trunks of ash trees. Larvae of Ch. nigrifacies Nagatomi were found under the bark of the elm, Sakhalin cork tree, birch, and fir. Morphological characteristics of larvae of Chrysopilus are discussed.  相似文献

The entire cycle of larval development of the spider crab Pugettia quadridens (de Haan, 1850) (Decapoda: Majidae), widespread in Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) is studied under the laboratory conditions. The development cycle of this species comprises prezoea, zoea I, zoea II, and megalopa. At a temperature of 18–20° C larval development took from 11 to 15 days. Zoea II is described in detail for the first time. Many morphological characters are found distinguishing zoea and megalopa of P. Quadridens in Russian waters from the larvae of this species in Japanese and Korean waters. Some characters of larvae are similar in P. Quadridens and the related species of the genus Pugettia. The larvae of P. Quadridens occur in the plankton of Vostok Bay from late June to late October with a density up to 5 ind/m3 at a surface water temperature of 13–21°C. They are easily distinguished from the other brachyuran larvae of this region by the absence of lateral spines on the carapace.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2004 by Biologiya Morya, Kornienko, Korn.  相似文献

New data on larval biology are given for four species, Metalimnobia bifasciata (Schr.), M. dualis Sav., M. lanceolata Sav., and M. quadrimaculata (L.). The morphology of the larvae of M. dualis Sav. and the larvae and pupae of M. lanceolata Sav. is examined for the first time. The morphological characteristics of the larvae and pupae of M. bifasciata (Schr.) and M. quadrimaculata (L.) are specified. Keys to species, based on the larval and pupal characters, are compiled.  相似文献

We present a phylogenetic and taxonomic study of the morphology and biology of the terminal‐instar larval stage of 19 species representing all the genera of Torymidae parasitoids of gall wasps in Europe, with the single exception of Megastigmus. The genera studied include Adontomerus Nikol'skaya, Idiomacromerus Crawford, Chalcimerus Steffan & Andriescu, Glyphomerus Förster, Pseudotorymus Masi and Torymus Dalman. We primarily used chaetotaxy and some head structures. The terminal‐instar larvae of all studied species are thoroughly described for the first time and illustrated with SEM images. We provide diagnostic characters for the family and the genera studied, and keys to genera and species for the identification of torymid larvae associated with cynipid galls. The majority of the torymid larvae studied are solitary monophagous parasitoids. Finally, to assess the potential use of larval characters in systematic studies of the family, a phylogenetic analysis of the studied taxa based on 42 larval morphological characters is proposed and compared with the current taxonomy of Torymidae. Our results suggest that body chaetotaxy, and characters of the head and mouthparts could be used for genera and species discrimination. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 154 , 676–721.  相似文献

The structure of the ovipositor sclerites and musculature was studied in the tephritid fly Carpomya schineri (Loew) whose larvae develop in the fruits of Rosa. The structural characters of the ovipositor of this species facilitating laying eggs into such fruits are discussed. The ovipositor musculature and functioning in Carpomya are very similar to those in Ceratitis and Bactrocera; species of all these genera lay eggs in fruits. In the details of the ovipositor musculature, Carpomya is more similar to Ceratitis than to Bactrocera. The genera Carpomya, Ceratitis and Bactrocera are phylogenetically close but Ceratitis and Bactrocera belong to sister tribes within one subfamily, Dacinae. Thus, morpho-functional similarity of the ovipositor structure may not only reflect close relationship but also result from common adaptive transformations.  相似文献

The biology of immature stages of the Diptera that accompany xylophagous insects inhabiting sap runs and tree holes was studied. Biological data are reported for the first time for 4 species and supplemented for 2 more species of the genus Phaonia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Muscidae). The main diagnostic characters of these species are given. The species differ in the life history of larvae, the morphology of the anterior and posterior spiracles, creeping welts, cephalopharyngeal apparatus, and anal plate. A key to immature stages of xylobiont species of the genus Phaonia is compiled.

ABSTRACT

Larvae of the invasive mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say are morphologically similar to those of the native Culex pervigilans Bergroth, yet distinguishing these species can be hampered by morphological variations in Cx. quinquefasciatus. We present detail about the extent of these variations in an urban population of Cx. quinquefasciatus in Auckland. To aid in identification of this exotic species, we provide images of key diagnostic characters and some observed exceptions to these. Details regarding variation in diagnostic characters for < 3rd instar and 3rd/4th instar larvae are given. Of the nine characters used for identification, three were highly consistent (dorsal papillae, mantle plate, pecten teeth); each observed in > 90% of larvae, although these characters were not always visible. Other characters were less reliable, for instance, the expected position of seta 1a-S in relation to the pecten teeth was observed in < 10% of larvae. Further exploration of regional morphological variation in both Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. pervigilans is recommended, ideally with associated molecular characterisation.  相似文献

Brood protection is a common feature of marine bivalves from higher latitudes. In this study the pallial organs of the Antarctic bivalves, Mysella charcoti (Lamy, 1906) and M. narchii Passos & Domaneschi, 2006 were investigated with respect to anatomical characters related to brooding. Both species are simultaneous hermaphrodites and their eggs contain a large amount of yolk. The number of broods ranges from 16 to 30 in M. narchii and 7–27 in M. charcoti, and ovoviviparity was observed for both. Their ctenidia differ in structure, those of M. charcoti being simpler. In M. narchii there is a large elasticity of the tissue of the marginal food grooves of ctenidia, and cilia are much more abundant on the ctenidial abfrontal surface and on the visceral mass epithelium than in M. charcoti. Anatomical characters of M. charcoti can be considered derived when compared to those of M. narchii. In conclusion, detailed anatomical characters related to brooding may be useful in future systematic studies of Antarctic Bivalvia.  相似文献
