Food preference is a socially constructed concept in which both consumers and producers define what is "good to eat." Staple crops and daily meals are an important component of these definitions, as the regular use of particular foods reinforces norms of identity. Food preferences also affect agricultural systems because choices among cultivars are based on social needs in addition to economic variables such as yield and caloric value. Through textual and archaeological evidence, the trajectory of rice production is examined for Sri Lanka, the Brahmaputra Valley, the Tamil region, and Vijayanagara. In these regions and elsewhere in South Asia, shared ideologies of food preference resulted in a consensus mode of agricultural production: Irrigation works increased the tax base for political leaders and the donation base for temple economies, but they also benefited local inhabitants who would have been able to partake of a preferred food on a more regular basis.  相似文献

In this profile article, we report what we consider to be a rich learning experience which intertwines pedagogy and research: a process of community-based action research which has initiated a transition towards the sustainability of the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) food system. We call this initiative the UBC Food System Project (UBCFSP). The UBCFSP is a jointly initiated project between the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and the UBC Sustainability Office, and includes nine UBC organizational partners and one collaborator. The project emerged out of the recognition that our global, national, regional, and local food systems are increasingly characterized as socially, ecologically, and economically insecure and unsustainable. As a result, these food systems are experiencing an array of vulnerabilities, particularly those that are demonstrated by profound disruptions in our ecosystem and in a worldwide epidemic of malnutrition. The overall objective of the project is to conduct a campus-wide UBC food system sustainability assessment, where barriers that hinder and opportunities to make transitions towards food system sustainability are being collaboratively identified and implemented. This article is part of a series intending to share the experiences gathered so far through the project. The purpose of this profile is to provide a brief overview of the UBC Food System Project, including the context and significance, both the pedagogical approach and research methods, and some accomplishments to date.  相似文献

Within the European-funded Coordination and Support Action MicrobiomeSupport ( https://www.microbiomesupport.eu/ ), the Workshop ‘Education in Food Systems Microbiome Related Sciences: Needs for Universities, Industry and Public Health Systems’ brought together over 70 researchers, public health and industry partners from all over the world to work on elaborating microbiome-related educational needs in food systems. 食物限制对鼠类生理特征产生明显影响。限食条件下,鼠类的能量消耗下降,能量需求降低,糖类、蛋白质和脂肪等物质的代谢过程及相应的酶活性改变,细胞免疫功能降低,神经内分泌发生变化,性成熟延迟,动情周期改变,动情行为受到抑制,生殖力下降,仔代的发育受到影响,性比发生变化。现就该领域近年来的研究进展做一综述,并提出一些新的思路。  相似文献

食物成瘾是指人们对某些特定食物(高度加工、可口、高热量的食物)的依赖性达到难以控制的程度,并表现出一系列成瘾样的行为学变化,具有强迫性、长期性和反复性的特点。食物成瘾可引起肥胖症,而且是大部分人不能维持减肥效果或坚持限制性饮食以保持健康体重的核心因素。深入理解食物成瘾及其神经生物学机制,将为干预食物成瘾以改善肥胖提供准确的靶点。食物成瘾的诊断标准是耶鲁大学食物成瘾量表,而食物成瘾的动物模型为小鼠食物自我管理模型。外侧下丘脑-腹侧被盖区-伏隔核神经环路、腹侧被盖区-前边缘皮质-伏隔核神经环路和外侧隔核-结节核神经环路是调控食物成瘾的关键神经环路机制。  相似文献

Food and energy requirements of captive barn owls were determined at 5, 15 and 25 degrees C. Food consumption, gross energy intake, dry matter intake, and existence metabolism increased as ambient temperature decreased. Barn owl energy assimilation efficiencies at the three test temperatures were approximately 78%. An increase in bioenergetic parameters might be anticipated when a bird is cold-stressed and must increase its metabolism for thermoregulation.  相似文献
