Seeds are often carried by omnivorous ants even if they do not carry elaiosomes. Although many seeds carried by ants are consumed, both seeds abandoned during the seed carrying and leftover seeds are consequently dispersed (dyszoochory). These non-myrmecochorous seeds do not necessarily attract ants quickly. Therefore, these seeds often seem to be exposed to the danger of consumption by pre-dispersal seed predators. We propose the hypotheses, “seed predator deterrence hypothesis” that plants may benefit from seed-carrying ants if they deter seed predators from visiting plants, and seed-carrying ants may play additional roles in plant reproductive success, besides dyszoochory by ants. To test the hypotheses, we investigated the abundance of seed-carrying ants of the species Tetramorium tsushimae Linnaeus and Pheidole noda Smith F., and of the seed predatory stinkbug, Nysius plebeius Distat, on the spotted sandmat, Chamaesyce maculata L. Small, of which the seeds have no elaiosomes but are consumed by both ants and bugs. In the field, ants and stinkbugs seldom encountered each other on the plant. The number of stinkbugs beneath the plants with ants was smaller than that beneath the plants without ants. In laboratory experiments, the number of stinkbugs on the shoot was smaller when ants were present than when they were absent. These results might support the seed predator deterrence hypothesis: the probability of seed predation by stinkbugs seems to be reduced by the ant visits on plants and/or the existence of ants beneath the plants. This study highlights a new ant–plant interaction in seed dispersal by ants.

Trillium ovatum (Liliaceae) is myrmecochorous: its seeds bear large elaiosomes that are attractive to ants. Nevertheless, in coastal second-growth redwood forests of northern California, most seedlings occur in mixed-age clusters close to potential parents, suggesting that seed dispersal is limited. Ants were absent or rare at two relatively cool, moist study sites. At these sites, most seeds either eventually fell passively from fruits or were knocked to the ground by banana slugs that foraged on the elaiosomes. At two warmer, drier sites, a single species of ant, Lasius pallitarsis, dispersed the seeds but tended to remove the elaiosomes before returning to the nest. Thus at all sites a large number of seeds remained close to adults, accounting for the observed pattern of seedling distribution. The dispersal adaptations of T. ovatum and other redwood forest myrmecochores probably evolved in forests where seed-carrying ants were more common.  相似文献

When juvenile praying mantids (Tenodera sinensis)were exposed to unpalatable prey (the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus),they attacked, sampled, and then usually rejected the prey. About 70% of the handling time was spent feeding. When offered a second milkweed bug, the mantids usually attacked the prey. However, the overall time required for the mantids to sample, recognize, and then reject the unpalatable prey decreased by half. The proportion of handling time that was spent feeding remained the same as in the first encounter. In contrast, when the second prey individuals encountered by mantids were Drosophila melanogaster, the flies were completely consumed and the proportion of handling time that was spent feeding significantly increased. When praying mantids were exposed to the milkweed bugs for the first time, up to 33% of the bugs survived attack by the mantids. Survival of milkweed bugs increased to 55% when mantids had been previously exposed to the bugs. In contrast, flies that were caught never survived.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The hypothesis that the small size of nonmigratory milkweed bugs from Puerto Rico (relative to large migratory bugs from Iowa) might be an adaptation to low food levels was tested with bugs selected for large and small size as the consequence of positive genetic correlation between body size and wing length. The test involved examining reaction norms of life history traits to different food levels.
2. When nymphs were reared on 3 milkweed seeds per nymph from hatch to adult eclosion, large bugs were adversely affected with only 50% and 60% in each of two replicates reaching adulthood. Control (unselected) and small bugs, however, were unaffected at this food level. None of the lines was affected at levels of 6 and 12 seeds per nymph.
3. When adults were reared from eclosion on 12, 18 or 24 milkweed seeds per bug, large bugs were adversely affected relative to control and small bugs at all three food levels. At each food level fewer large bugs produced eggs than either small or control bugs which did not differ.
4. The evidence from the food level reaction norms suggests that larger bugs will be selected against during periods of food shortage of the sort likely to occur in Puerto Rico.  相似文献

Abstract. Diapause adults of Plautia stali Scott maintained at 20°C under short day conditions (LD 12:12 h) were exposed to four temperatures of 5–20°C to examine the effect on diapause development which was assessed in terms of oviposition. Diapause adults kept at 20°C under short day conditions changed their body colour gradually from brown to green and started egg laying after a prolonged preoviposition period. Those transferred to either 10 or 15°C also showed colour change but did not lay eggs. Bugs exposed to 5°C underwent neither body colour change nor oviposition and died more rapidly than those kept at higher temperatures. When 30-day-old diapause adults were chilled at 5, 10 or 15°C for 30 or 60 days and returned to 20°C and long day conditions (LD 16:8 h), the preoviposition period varied primarily depending on the chilling, but not on the temperature. On the other hand, when 60day-old diapause adults chilled for 30 days were observed at 20°C and long day conditions, their preoviposition period tended to be longer as the chilling temperature was lower In this case, a temperature of 10°C appeared to intensify diapause. Therefore, the effect of chilling on diapause development varied depending on the age at which insects were chilled. When chilled bugs were transferred to short day conditions at 20°C, most females failed to lay any eggs and some turned green, then after a while, some green bugs changed to brown again. These results indicate that bugs remained sensitive to short day conditions even after a 60-day chilling at 10 or 15°C.  相似文献

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate feeding activity and superficial damage to soybean seed by the brown-winged stink bug, Edessa meditabunda (F.), and the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.). Soybean plants (cv. BRS 282), at R6 stage of development were used. Thirty pairs of each species were used individually for 48?h. Two daily observations (9:00?AM and 3:00?PM) were taken to record the number of bugs (feeding/resting) on plant parts. Harvested seeds imbibed in tetrazolium solution were photographed for measurement of the damaged surface. Adult E. meditabunda significantly preferred soybean stems (19.7 bugs) to pods (2.7). Feeding/resting was similar at 9:00?AM (mean number of 28.0 bugs) and 3:00?PM (24.3). Euschistus heros equally fed/stayed on stems (7.3 bugs) and pods (6.9), although most bugs (12.3) remained on the cage net; feeding/resting on all plant structures amounted to 13.7 bugs at 9:00?AM and 17.7 bugs at 3:00?PM. Amylase activity was greater for E. heros (41.61?±?0.89?U/mg) and almost none for E. meditabunda (2.35?±?0.14?U/mg). The superficial damage to seeds was significantly greater for E. meditabunda (22. 9?mm2) compared to E. heros (12.5?mm2). However, E. meditabunda caused less shrinkage of the seed tegument, while E. heros damage was deeper and seeds showed reduction in size.  相似文献

Antipredator defense of herbivorous insects often relies on the potential toxicity of defensive chemicals sequestered from their host plants. The colorful Lygaeinae (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) store a concentrated mixture of toxic cardenolides (cardiac glycosides) in specialized storage compartments of the bugs' integument, from which they are released upon attack. Larvae and adults of the large milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus (Heteroptera: Lygaeinae) are specialized to feed on cardenolide‐containing milkweeds in the plant genus Asclepias and display a conspicuous red and black colorations. To investigate whether O. fasciatus gained improved protection by feeding on a toxic host plant (Asclepias syriaca), compared to a nontoxic alternative (sunflower seeds), we fed nymphs and adults of O. fasciatus to the golden orb‐weaver Nephila senegalensis. While visually oriented vertebrates, such as avian predators, have been intensively investigated for their reaction to defensive compounds and aposematic coloration, less attention has been paid to invertebrate predators. Their different perceptual abilities can provide important opportunities for testing hypotheses on warning coloration and chemical defenses. The predation trials showed that the bugs fed on Asclepias were significantly less likely to be killed than the bugs reared on a cardenolide‐free diet. This suggests that sequestered cardenolides in O. fasciatus nymphs and adults represent a significant fitness advantage on an individual level against this invertebrate predator. Yet, when testing for avoidance learning in the spiders, negative experience did not change the way how similar prey was attacked at the next encounter. In this case, visual or chemical aposematism thus does not seem to matter for predator learning.  相似文献

As part of a study aimed at determining the factors affecting overwintering habitat choice by Halyomorpha halys, we examined the behavioral response to light of diapausing adults (which have no reproductive activity) and non-diapausing adults. Bugs were tested individually in a choice chamber (14, 18 and 24°C) containing a dark refuge with opaque (black) sides and roof. Each bug’s position in the choice chamber was recorded at regular intervals. The results indicated that diapausing bugs prefer to settle in a dark place (p < 0.05). This preference appeared to weaken at 24°C; however, this apparent trend was probably due to the greater overall activity of the bugs under warmer conditions. In tests of non-diapausing bugs, lower proportions of the bugs were observed inside the dark refuge at higher temperatures; however, the preference for dark places was exhibited under all temperature conditions. Based on these results, we infer that H. halys adults have a fundamental preference for dark places whether or not they are in diapauses, which plays a main role in hiding behavior. This preference becomes most obvious in the winter, with the decrease in behavioral activity resulting from lower temperatures. We propose that this common preference for location is one of the factors responsible for the bugs’ convergence on specific microhabitats and the overwintering aggregate formation of H. halys.  相似文献

In lowland Amazonian rainforests, specific ants collect seeds of several plant species and cultivate them in arboreal carton nests, forming species-specific symbioses called ant-gardens (AGs). In this obligate mutualism, ants depend on the plants for nest stability and the plants depend on ant nests for substrate and nutrients. AG ants and plants are abundant, dominant members of lowland Amazonian ecosystems, but the cues ants use to recognize the seeds are poorly understood. To address the chemical basis of the ant-seed interaction, we surveyed seed chemistry in nine AG species and eight non-AG congeners. We detected seven phenolic and terpenoid volatiles common to seeds of all or most of the AG species, but a blend of the shared compounds was not attractive to the AG ant Camponotus femoratus. We also analyzed seeds of three AG species (Anthurium gracile, Codonanthe uleana, and Peperomia macrostachya) using behavior-guided fractionation. At least one chromatographic fraction of each seed extract elicited retrieval behavior in C. femoratus, but the active fractions of the three plant species differed in polarity and chemical composition, indicating that shared compounds alone did not explain seed-carrying behavior. We suggest that the various AG seed species must elicit seed-carrying with different chemical cues.  相似文献

Effects of host availability and feeding period on bed bugs, Cimex lectularius (L.) (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), were measured. Population growth and the potential harmful effect of bed bug populations on human hosts were modelled. Bloodmeal sizes were affected by both feeding length and frequency, with >2‐fold difference between insects fed daily or weekly. Blood consumption increased >2‐fold between bed bugs fed occasionally and often, and 1.5‐fold between occasional and daily feeding. Bed bugs fed more often than once a week, potentially every 2–4 days. Egg production was associated with nutrition, being strongly correlated with blood consumption in the previous week. Bed bug populations can grow under different feeding regimes and are hard to control with <80% mortality. Bed bugs can survive and grow even in locations with a limited blood supply, where bed bug persistence may be important for the continual spread of populations. Persistence in non‐traditional locations and a potential association with human pathogens increase the health risks of bed bugs. Potential blood loss as a result of a bed bug can have serious consequences because uncontrolled populations can reach harmful levels in 3–8 months. The reproduction potential of bed bug populations suggests serious consequences to human health and the need for efficacious control measures.  相似文献

The bed bug, Cimex lectularius, aggregates under filter paper disks previously stained by adults. A multiple-choice assay was used to determine differences in aggregation behavior among two strains, multiple lifestages, and levels of starvation. There were no differences in level of aggregation between established and recently derived strains, or among adults and nymphs of different instars. Propensity to aggregate decreased with time since feeding, but preference for stained disks remained high. We also examined which sensory structures mediate aggregation, and whether antennectomy affected movement, orientation, and arrestment under stained disks. Bed bugs that were left intact, blinded, or surgically altered by the removal of probosci or the distal antennal segments exhibited high levels of aggregation under stained disks. However, the removal of the pedicel significantly reduced aggregation compared to intact bugs. Video recordings of movement and orientation by bugs with intact, partial and complete antennectomies demonstrated that neither partial nor complete antennectomies affected walking speed, path straightness, direction of movement or frequency of encounters with either stained or clean disks. However, complete removal of both antennae significantly reduced the percentage of encounters with stained disks that resulted in arrestment. These findings suggest aggregation by bed bugs is a result of arrestment mediated by direct, close-range contact between sensilla on the pedicel and stained disks.  相似文献

The paper reviews the data on diapause and related phenomena in stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Using stink bugs as examples, the consecutive stages of the complex dynamic process of diapause (such as diapause preparation, induction, initiation, maintenance, termination, post-diapause quiescence, and resumption of direct development) are described and discussed. Out of 43 pentatomid species studied in relation to diapause in the Temperate Zone up to date, the majority (38 species) overwinter as adults, two species—as eggs, and another two species—as nymphs. Pentatoma rufipes is believed to be able to overwinter at different stages of its life cycle. Less than 5 % of pentatomid species are probably able to overwinter twice. Only five species have obligate diapause, others have the facultative one. Day-length and temperature are the main diapause inducing factors in the majority of species. The role of food in the control of seasonal development is essential in the pentatomid species feeding on plant seeds. In different species, different stages are sensitive to day-length. Some pentatomids retain sensitivity to photoperiod even after diapause, others lose it and become photo-refractory (temporarily or permanently). In Pentatomidae, such seasonal adaptations as photoperiodic control of nymphal growth rates, seasonal body colour change, migrations, and summer diapause (aestivation) are widely represented, whereas wing and/or wing muscle polymorphism has not been reported yet. In the subfamily Podopinae, induction of facultative reproductive winter diapause is under the control of photoperiod and temperature. All species feed on seeds and their seasonal development to a great extent reflects availability of food. However, the same food preferences and pattern of seasonal development are also characteristic to many species from the subfamily Pentatominae. All species of the subfamily Asopinae are predators. Among them, Picromerus bidens and Apateticus cynicus have obligate embryonic winter diapause, which is rear among true bugs. At the same time, A. cynicus and Podisus maculiventris belong to the same tribe but have different types of diapause: obligate embryonic diapause in A. cynicus and facultative adult diapause in P. maculiventris. Other Asopinae species studied up to date have facultative adult diapause controlled by photoperiod and temperature with probably only one exception: in Andrallus spinidens, adult diapause is controlled by temperature, and photoperiod plays only a secondary role. Thus, in spite of the similar habits and feeding types among Asopinae, the species of this subfamily have different types of diapause and the latter is controlled by different factors. In the subfamily Pentatominae, most species overwinter as adults and induction of their diapause is controlled by the long-day type photoperiodic response, in spite of the differences in their feeding preferences (within phytophagy). However, there are some exceptions in this subfamily, too: Palomena prasina, P. angulosa and Menida scotti have obligate diapause, which conditions univoltinism in these pentatomids. In M. scotti, only females have obligate adult diapause, whereas males remain physiologically active through the whole winter, this pattern being unusual for Heteroptera. The univoltine seasonal cycle of this species with summer diapause (aestivation) and apparent migrations is similar to that of shield bugs (Scutelleridae). According to the analysis of seasonal development, the evolution of seasonal adaptations in Pentatomidae does not directly reflect their phylogeny. However, individual genera, small tribes or even subfamilies have similar complexes of seasonal adaptations. At the same time, Pentatominae is a large and apparently collected taxon, but most of species in this subfamily have the same facultative adult diapause.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to analyze the effects of food supply and photoperiod on the induction of dormancy inLeptocorisa oratorius Fabricius (Heteroptera: Alydidae) adults in Alor Setar (latitude 6.1o N), West Malaysia. When the adults were deprived of food, they ceased oviposition, became tolerant to starvation, and their oxygen consumption rate decreased, but they did not accumulate lipid. Their oxygen consumption rate again increased when they were allowed to resume feeding. Therefore, food limitation induced quiescence in the adult. On the other hand, diapause was induced by short daylength (critical photoperiod was 12L:12D), leading to immature ovaries, hypertrophied fat bodies, lipid accumulation and low oxygen consumption rate even when food was available. However, in the study area most of the bugs probably did not enter diapause at any time of the year, because the shortest outdoor daylength including civil twilight was longer than the critical daylength for diapause induction.  相似文献

Six-hour continuous observations on the arctiid caterpillar, Pygarctia roseicapitis, were made under natural conditions in the field, and all foraging-related activities were recorded. Individuals invariably cut veins of the latex-rich host plants before feeding distal to the cuts. Seven percent of the time was spent in this vein-cutting behavior, and 40% of the time was spent feeding. Most vein-cutting events were on petioles, allowing up to six feeding bouts on the resultant wilted leaf. Both leaves and plants were often abandoned before the resource was fully utilized. The results are discussed in relation to vein-cutting behavior by other insect herbivores and the possible trade-offs in such strategies.  相似文献

A blood‐feeding system that utilizes a small amount of whole heparinized human blood in parafilm bags is described in detail, and similarities and differences between artificially fed and naturally rodent‐fed bed bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are discussed. Blood with high levels of heparin (10%) was unsuitable for artificial colony rearing, whereas bed bugs fed on 1% heparinized blood and those that naturally ingested rat blood completed their lifecycle with similar stage structures over time, with no significant differences in mortality. No differences in feeding efficiency or fertility were found in a direct comparison of bed bugs maintained under each of these two treatments, but analysis of the full lifecycle revealed that artificially fed bed bugs became significantly smaller and laid fewer eggs than rodent‐fed bed bugs. The level of membrane stretching regulated the number of bed bugs that fed. When the membrane was stretched to twice its length and width, 96% of bed bugs successfully fed through the parafilm. Whole heparinized blood that was stored at 6 °C for ≥ 14 days failed to retain its nutritional value and the amount of blood consumed and number of consecutive moults were significantly reduced.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance of the neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in overwintering sites in northern Paraná state, Brazil (latitude 23°11 S, longitude 51°11 W) was monitored from September 1994 to August 1995. The breaking of dormancy (oligopause) was studied in the laboratory by comparing the feeding activity and reproduction of adults collected in the field under different physiological conditions (i.e., dormant and non-dormant). No bugs were found in overwintering sites during the summer (December to February) and during early autumn (March). From mid-autumn to winter (April – August), the number of E. heros captured in these sites gradually increased, decreasing thereafter with the start of spring in September. Dormant and non-dormant E. heros taken to the laboratory and maintained at 25 ± 1 °C , 65± 5% r.h., and L14: D10 photoperiod, and given suitable food (soybean pods or seeds), began feeding immediately. The number of stylet sheaths deposited/day on the food was greater for non-dormant than for dormant adults. Feeding activity was greater on immature pods than on mature seeds of soybean. Dormant females placed under suitable biotic and abiotic conditions took ca. 2 weeks to start reproduction, in contrast to non-dormant females, which reproduced immediately.  相似文献

A series of bioassays were conducted to determine the response of adult western tarnished plant bugs, Lygus hesperus Knight (Heteroptera: Miridae), to artificial diets containing potassium chloride (KCl). We first examined the feeding behavior of L. hesperus by direct observation in a no‐choice diet feeding arena. We observed a total of 22 Lygus feeding events lasting an average of 411 ± 64 s on the control artificial diet and only three feeding events lasting an average of 11 ± 3 s on the KCl‐treated diet. We then conducted several multiple diet choice bioassays to determine the feeding response of L. hesperus when exposed simultaneously to five artificial diet treatments containing different amounts of KCl. For the first bioassay, we used standard clear parafilm diet packets and for the second bioassay we used dark green parafilm diet packets to hold the various diet treatments. Regardless of the diet packet color, L. hesperus overwhelmingly selected the 0% KCl diet treatment over diets containing 3, 6, 9, or 12% KCl. The third and fourth multiple diet choice bioassays were identical to the first bioassay, except that concentrations of the KCl‐treated diets were reduced. Lygus hesperus consistently selected the control diet over all diets containing more than 0.5% KCl. However, when the concentration of KCl in the diet was reduced to ≤0.4%, there were no significant differences in feeding activity exhibited by L. hesperus. Finally, to determine if the addition of KCl to the diet influenced their upwind response, we examined the responses of L. hesperus that were simultaneously exposed to a control artificial diet and a diet containing 12% KCl in a Y‐tube olfactometer bioassay. Of the 95 adults tested, 47 selected the arm containing the normal diet and 48 selected the arm containing KCl‐treated diet, indicating that dietary constituents did not preferentially attract or repel L. hesperus. The results from these studies strongly suggest that KCl negatively affects L. hesperus feeding behavior by functioning as a strong gustatory deterrent when concentrations exceed 0.5%. Visual and volatile cues appeared to have no role in mediating orientation or feeding behavior under these test conditions.  相似文献

Larvae of Utetheisa ornatrix (L.)(Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) are found mainly inside unripe pods of several alkaloid‐bearing Crotalaria (Fabaceae) species. Although eggs are laid on the leaves, the larvae are usually found feeding on unripe seeds in the pods. In this work, we investigated the selective pressures that could explain why U. ornatrix larvae feed primarily on unripe pods with seeds and not on leaves. Our results showed that larval survivorship in the laboratory was unaffected by feeding on leaves or unripe seeds, and that larval development up to the pupal stage was better in larvae that fed on unripe seeds, although perforating unripe pods to reach seeds was costly in terms of survivorship. Females were also heavier when fed on unripe seeds, but there was no significant difference in the fecundity of females fed either of the two diets. Feeding on unripe seeds in pods had other benefits for U. ornatrix, including a lower predation rate for larvae that fed inside compared to larvae that fed outside the pods. Similarly, adults derived from larvae that fed on unripe seeds were preyed upon less frequently by the orb‐weaving spider Nephila clavipes than were adults that fed on leaves. The latter benefit may be closely related to the high concentration of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in unripe seeds, which is about five times more than in leaves. These alkaloids are sequestered by the larvae and transferred to adults, which then become chemically protected. However, this chemical defence does not protect the larvae against ants such as Ectatomma quadridens and Camponotus crassus. Pods with unripe seeds that confer physical protection to larvae and pyrrolizidine alkaloids that confer chemical protection to adults limit the use of leaves by U. ornatrix larvae.  相似文献
