Lavoisiera campos-portoana Barreto (Melastomataceae) has two kinds of leaves, pubescent and glabrous, and branches may have one or both types of leaves at the same moment. The plant is endemic to high altitude rocky fields in Brazil where rainfall is very seasonal. We predicted that these two leaf types are adaptations to different regimes of water availability. In experimental conditions of drought stress, we measured relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a fluorescence and osmotic potential, and we counted stomates and measured stomatal conductance on both sides of leaves and compared these between the two leaf types. Stomatal conductance and electron transport rate at a given photosynthetic photon flux were greater in pubescent leaves than in glabrous leaves, and both declined during drought stress. Excessive photon flux density in glabrous leaves was greater during stress and after rehydration. Photosynthetic pigment content and RWC did not change between leaves, and values reduced during the stress period. Both types of leaves showed osmotic adjustment capacity, which occurred earlier in glabrous ones. These morphophysiological differences highlight the adaptation strategies of this plant to withstand drought, since the glabrous portion of the plant presents a preventive behavior, while the pubescent portion only shows the same responses in more advanced stages of drought stress.  相似文献

Summary Kudzu occurs in a variety of habitats in the southeastern United States. It is most common in exposed, forest edge sites and road cuts where it forms an extensive ground canopy as well as a canopy overtopping nearby trees, but it can also be found in completely open fields and deeply shaded sites within a forest. Microclimate, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential and photosynthetic responses to light, temperature and humidity were measured in two contrasting microhabitats on Pueraria lobata, kudzu. Midsummer leaf temperatures and leaf-to-air water vapor deficits for plants growing in an exposed site were significantly greater than for those in a shaded site, exceeding 35° C and 50 mmol mol-1, respectively. Maximum stomatal conductance exceeded 400 mmol m-2 s-1 in exposed leaves during peak vegetative growth. Stomatal conductance in shaded leaves was approximately half the value measured in exposed leaves on any particular dya. Maximum photosynthetic carbon uptake was also higher in leaves growing in exposed sites compared to leaves in shaded sites, exceeding 18.7 and 14.0 mol m-2 s-1, respectively. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased dramatically in response to increasing water vapor deficit for leaves from both sites. However, transpiration showed an initial increase at intermediate water vapor deficits, leveling off or even decreasing at higher values. Leaf water potential demonstrated marked diurnal variation, but remained constant over a wide range of transpirational water fluxes. This latter feature, combined with microenvironmental modification through rapid leaf orientation and pronounced stomatal responses to water vapor deficits may represent important adaptive responses in the exploitation of a diverse array of habitats by kudzu.  相似文献

The responses of leaf conductance, leaf water potential and rates of transpiration and net photosynthesis at different vapour pressure deficits ranging from 10 to 30 Pa kPa-1 were followed in the sclerophyllous woody shrub Nerium oleander L. as the extractable soil water content decreased. When the vapour pressure deficit around a plant was kept constant at 25 Pa kPa-1 as the soil water content decreased, the leaf conductance and transpiration rate showed a marked closing response to leaf water potential at-1.1 to-1.2 MPa, whereas when the vapour pressure deficit around the plant was kept constant at 10 Pa kPa-1, leaf conductance decreased almost linearly from-0.4 to-1.1 MPa. Increasing the vapour pressure deficit from 10 to 30 Pa kPa-1 in 5 Pa kPa-1 steps, decreased leaf conductance at all exchangeable soil water contents. Changing the leaf water potential in a single leaf by exposing the remainder of the plant to a high rate of transpiration decreased the water potential of that leaf, but did not influence leaf conductance when the soil water content was high. As the soil water content was decreased, leaf conductances and photosynthetic rates were higher at equal levels of water potential when the decrease in potential was caused by short-term increases in transpiration than when the potential was decreased by soil drying. As the soil dried and the stomata closed, the rate of photosynthesis decreased with a decrease in the internal carbon dioxide partial pressure, but neither the net photosynthetic rate nor the internal CO2 partial pressure were affected by low water potentials resulting from short-term increases in the rate of transpiration. Leaf conductance, transpiration rate and net photosynthetic rate showed no unique relationship to leaf water potential, but in all experiments the leaf gas exchange decreased when about one half of the extractable soil water had been utilized. We conclude that soil water status rather than leaf water status controls leaf gas exchange in N. oleander.  相似文献

Aquaporins seem essential for the regulation of plant water status and expenses. Richter-110 is a Vitis hybrid (Vitis berlandieri × rupestris) reputed to be strongly drought-tolerant. Three irrigation treatments were established in Richter-110 plants growing outdoors defined by the resulting maximum stomatal conductance (g s), and ensuring water stress situations not severe enough as to stop photosynthesis and growth: well-watered plants (g s about 250 mmol H2O m−2 s−1), moderate water stress (g s about 150 mmol H2O m−2 s−1) and severe water stress (g s about 50 mmol H2O m−2 s−1). Plants under water stress were kept at constant water availability for 7 days to check for possible acclimation. Finally, plants were re-watered, and allowed to recover, for 3 days. Stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, xylem abscisic acid (ABA) content and root and stem hydraulic conductivity were determined. The relative amounts of expression of mRNA encoding seven putative aquaporins were determined in roots and leaves by RT-PCR. The decrease in stomatal conductance with moderate and severe water stress was associated with increasing ABA contents, but not with the leaf water potential and hydraulic conductivities, which remained unchanged during the entire experiment. Aquaporin gene expression varied depending on which aquaporin, water stress level and the plant organ. We suggest that aquaporin expression was responsive to water stress as part of the homeostasis, which resulted in constant leaf water potential and hydraulic conductivity.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to extent the range of knowledge about water relations and stomatal responses to water stress to ten Mediterranean plants with different growth forms and leaf habits. Plants were subjected to different levels of water stress and a treatment of recovery. Stomatal attributes (stomatal density, StoD), stomatal conductance (g s), stomatal responsiveness to water stress (SR), leaf water relations (pre-dawn and midday leaf water potential and relative water content), soil to leaf apparent hydraulic conductance (K L) and bulk modulus of elasticity (ε) were determined. The observed wide range of water relations and stomatal characteristics was found to be partially depended on the growth form. Maximum g s was related to StoD and the stomatal area index (SAI), while g s evolution after water stress and recovery was highly correlated with K L. Relationships between SR to water deficit and other morphological leaf traits, such as StoD, LMA or ε, provided no general correlations when including all species. It is concluded that a high variability is present among Mediterranean plants reflecting a continuum of leaf water relations and stomatal behaviour in response to water stress.

To evaluate the effect of drought and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) on stomatal behaviour and gas exchange parameters, young kiwifruit vines (Actinidia deliciosavar.deliciosacv. Hayward) were exposed to alternating periods of drought and drought-relief over two growing seasons. Vines were grown either in the field or in containers. Stomatal conductance of fully-expanded leaves rapidly decreased as pre-dawn leaf water potential was reduced below a threshold value of -0.3MPa. Stomatal conductance reached minimum values of 10–20mmol m-2s-1. Transpiration rate was similarly sensitive to changes in leaf water status, whereas more severe drought levels were necessary to affect photosynthesis significantly. Net daily carbon gains were estimated at 4.7 and 2.7gm-2for irrigated and droughted vines, respectively. Gas exchange parameters recovered to values of irrigated vines within a few hours after relief of stress. Rate of recovery depended on the level of stress reached during the previous drought period. There was a steady decline in stomatal conductance when VPD was increased from 0.8 to 2.5kPa in both irrigated and droughted vines. The VPD at which stomatal conductance reached 50% of maximum values was 2.1–2.2kPa for both treatments. We conclude that stomata were highly sensitive to changes in soil water status and that midday depression of photosynthesis measured in kiwifruit vines was related to water deficits arising in the leaf because of both transpirational losses and to the direct effect of increasing VPD.  相似文献

Influence of elevated carbon dioxide on water relations of soybeans   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:7       下载免费PDF全文
Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill cv `Bragg') plants were grown in pots at six elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations and two watering regimes in open top field chambers to characterize leaf xylem potential, stomatal resistance and conductance, transpiration, and carbohydrate contents of the leaves in response to CO2 enrichment and water stress conditions. Groups of plants at each CO2 concentration were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation for 4 days during the pod-filling stage.

Under well watered conditions, the stomatal conductance of the plants decreased with increasing CO2 concentration. Therefore, although leaf area per plant was greater in the high CO2 treatments, the rate of water loss per plant decreased with CO2 enrichment. After 4 days without irrigation, plants in lower CO2 treatments showed greater leaf tissue damage, lower leaf water potential, and higher stomatal resistance than high CO2 plants. Stomatal closure occurred at lower leaf water potentials for the low CO2 grown plants than the high CO2 grown plants. Significantly greater starch concentrations were found in leaves of high CO2 plants, and the reductions in leaf starch and increases in soluble sugars due to water stress were greater for low CO2 plants. The results showed that even though greater growth was observed at high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, lower rates of water use delayed and, thereby, prevented the onset of severe water stress under conditions of low moisture availability.

In order to investigate the factors causing fast growth of sprouts ofPasania edulis, photosynthetic activity and water relation characteristics of lower (mature) leaves and upper (expanding) leaves of the sprouts were compared with those of seedlings and adult trees ofP. edulis. Apparent quantum yield was generally low. Maximum photosynthetic rate was highest in the lower leaves of sprouts. Stomatal frequency was higher in sprout leaves than in seedling leaves. Osmotic potential at the water saturation point and water potential at the turgor loss point, in leaves, were higher in sprouts than in seedlings and adult trees. Symplasmic water content per unit leaf area was higher in sprouts than in seedlings. These water relation parameters in leaves indicated that sprout leaves are superior in maintaining cell turgor against water loss, but are not tolerant to water stress. In field measurements, sprout leaves showed higher stomatal conductance and transpiration rates. These results indicated that sprout leaves fully realized their high potential productivity even under field conditions. The leaf specific conductance, from the soil to the leaf, was higher in sprouts than in seedlings. Large and deep root systems of the original stumps of the sprouts may be attributed to the high leaf specific conductance.  相似文献

Changes in leaf and canopy water potential of sugar beet growingin soil of decreasing water content depended on soil water potentialand were independent of water flux from the plant when thiswas varied by changing the water vapour content of the air.The calculated hydraulic conductance of the plant increasedas flux increased and decreased as leaf water potential decreasedand as the plant aged. The conductances to water vapour of individualleaves and of the canopy decreased as leaf water potential decreasedand increased with increasing humidity of the air. The lattereffect was independent of changes in leaf water potential. Theconductances were not affected by the rate of evaporation orleaf temperature. The rate of photosynthesis was directly relatedto leaf conductance except in severely stressed, mature leavesin which leaf water potential had a more direct effect on photosynthesis.Stomatal conductances, transpiration, and photosynthesis weregreater in young leaves than mature leaves on the same plantand at the same leaf water potential. These results are discussedin relation to current agricultural irrigation practices usedfor sugar beet.  相似文献

Summary Diurnal courses of stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, and the components of tissue water potential were measured in six canopy species in an elfin cloud forest. High values of stomatal conductance were measured on cloudy days and during early morning and late afternoon of sunny days. Decreases in stomatal conductance with increases in vapour pressure deficit may have been a response to avoid further water deficits and suggested a stomatal response to changes in relative humidity. Daily transpiration varied between 470 and 1014 g m-2 day-1 during cloudy days and between 532 and 944 g m-2 day-1 during clear days. Stomatal conductance may have also responded to changes in leaf water potential, which was minimum at noon. The minimum tissue water potential measured in the field was -1.8 MPa in Myrcianthes fragrans, and the minimum turgor pressure was 0.49 MPa also in M. fragrans. There was a correlation between the osmotic potential and the minimum tissue water potential, suggesting that osmotic potential plays a major role in the maintenance of turgor in these species, in spite of the great variability in the elastic properties of leaf tissues. Turgor pressure decreased during the day following the course of water potential but never approached the turgor loss point, as it has been measured in some lowland rain forest trees. This is a strong indication that elfin cloud forest trees do not suffer severe water deficits, and that small tree stature is not directly related to water shortage.  相似文献

In the frame of the foreseen climate global changes we analysed the physiological responses of Arbutus unedo L. to the variations of carbon dioxide concentration, leaf temperature, and irradiance by measurements of leaf gas exchange and leaf water potential performed both in field and in the laboratory. Stomatal conductance was not affected by increase of leaf temperature. The growth conditions of potted plants likely made stomata more sensitive to the variation of external parameters than naturally growing plants. The interaction between high CO2 concentration and temperature involved important down-regulation mechanisms in the metabolic pathway of the carbon fixation. From an ecological point of view, the ability of A. unedo to adapt to the field stress makes it highly competitive in the Mediterranean plant community.  相似文献

A coupled model of stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and transpiration   总被引:18,自引:1,他引:17
A model that couples stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, leaf energy balance and transport of water through the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum is presented. Stomatal conductance in the model depends on light, temperature and intercellular CO2 concentration via photosynthesis and on leaf water potential, which in turn is a function of soil water potential, the rate of water flow through the soil and plant, and on xylem hydraulic resistance. Water transport from soil to roots is simulated through solution of Richards’ equation. The model captures the observed hysteresis in diurnal variations in stomatal conductance, assimilation rate and transpiration for plant canopies. Hysteresis arises because atmospheric demand for water from the leaves typically peaks in mid‐afternoon and because of uneven distribution of soil matric potentials with distance from the roots. Potentials at the root surfaces are lower than in the bulk soil, and once soil water supply starts to limit transpiration, root potentials are substantially less negative in the morning than in the afternoon. This leads to higher stomatal conductances, CO2 assimilation and transpiration in the morning compared to later in the day. Stomatal conductance is sensitive to soil and plant hydraulic properties and to root length density only after approximately 10 d of soil drying, when supply of water by the soil to the roots becomes limiting. High atmospheric demand causes transpiration rates, LE, to decline at a slightly higher soil water content, θs, than at low atmospheric demand, but all curves of LE versus θs fall on the same line when soil water supply limits transpiration. Stomatal conductance cannot be modelled in isolation, but must be fully coupled with models of photosynthesis/respiration and the transport of water from soil, through roots, stems and leaves to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Summary Young seedlings of English Oak, Quercus robur L., and Silver Birch, Betula verrucosa Ehrl., were subjected to a number of consecutive periods during which water was withheld. During one 14-day period leaf-and soil-water potentials and leaf- and root-solute potentials of two groups of plants were sampled at noon of each day. One group of plants was watered every day while water was withheld from the other group. Solute accumulation in roots and leaves of oak seedlings subjected to water stress resulted in maintenance of turgor and high leaf conductance as the soil dried. In birch seedlings turgor was only maintained by stomatal closure at high soil water potential.Fourteen consecutive water stress cycles greatly reduced the growth of birch seedlings but had little effect on oak seedlings other than to alter root morphology. Water stress treatment resulted in the production of long thin roots in this plant. Stomatal behaviour in oak and birch seedlings during the 14-week stress period was consistent with observed changes in leaf water and solute potentials. Daily solute accumulation in oak leaves was presumably responsible for the maintenance of plant growth as water potentials fell.  相似文献

The gas exchange of the upper fully expanded leaf of the root parasite Striga hermonthica and of its host Sorghum bicolor was measured under wet and dry conditions to identify the mechanisms of the devastating effects of the parasite on its hosts under drought. The short-term water stress severely reduced photosynthetic rate in infected sorghum, but less in S. hermonthica. Soil water stress did not affect leaf respiration rate in either S. hermonthica or infected sorghum. This suggests that under dry conditions both infected sorghum and S. hermonthica decreased autotrophic carbon gain. The transpiration rate of S. hermonthica, a major driving force for assimilate uptake from the host, was higher and less affected by water stress than that of infected sorghum. Stomatal density on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves was higher in S. hermonthica than in sorghum. Both S. hermonthica infection and water stress decreased stomatal conductance of the sorghum leaves. S. hermonthica, irrespective of soil water status, had greater stomatal aperture on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of its leaves than infected sorghum. These results indicate that the higher transpiration rate of S. hermonthica even under water stress, achieved through higher stomatal density on the abaxial surfaces of the leaves and greater stomatal aperture on both surfaces of the leaves, may induce the maintenance of water and solute transfers from the host to the parasite leading to severe damage to the host under drought.  相似文献

It has been suggested that abscisic acid (ABA) regulates a centralized response of plants to low soil resource availability that is characterized by decreased shoot growth relative to root growth, decreased photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, and decreased plant growth rate. The hypothesis was tested that an ABA-deficient mutant of tomato (flacca; flc) would not exhibit the same pattern of down-regulation of photosynthesis, conductance, leaf area and growth, as well as increased root/shoot partitioning, as its near isogenic wild-type in response to nitrogen or water deficiency, or at least not exhibit these responses to the same degree. Plants were grown from seed in acid-washed sand and exposed to control, nutrient stress, or water stress treatments. Additionally, exogenous ABA was sprayed onto the leaves of a separate group of flc individuals in each treatment. Growth analysis, based on data from frequent harvests of a few individuals, was used to assess the growth and partitioning responses of plants, and gas exchange characteristics were measured on plants throughout the experiment to examine the response of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance. Differences in growth, partitioning and gas exchange variables were found between flc and wild-type individuals, and both nutrient and water treatments caused significant reductions in relative growth rate (RGR) and changes in biomass partitioning. Only the nutrient treatment caused significant reductions in photosynthetic rates. However, flc and wild-type plants responded identically to nutrient and water stress for all but one of the variables measured. The exception was that flc showed a greater decrease in the relative change in leaf area per unit increase of plant biomass (an estimate of the dynamics of leaf area ratio) in response to nutrient stress—a result that is opposite to that predicted by the centralized stress response model. Furthermore, addition of exogenous ABA to flc did not significantly alter any of the responses to nutrient and water stress that we examined. Although it was clear that ABA regulated short-term stomatal responses, we found no evidence to support a pivotal role for ABA, at least absolute amounts of ABA, in regulating a centralized whole-plant response to low soil resource availability.  相似文献

Summary The responses of photosynthesis, transpiration and leaf conductance to changes in vapour pressure deficit were followed in well-watered plants of the herbaceous species, Helianthus annuus, Helianthus nuttallii, Pisum sativum and Vigna unguiculata, and in the woody species having either sclerophyllous leaves, Arbutus unedo, Nerium oleander and Pistacia vera, or mesomorphic leaves, Corylus avellana, Gossypium hirsutum and Prunus dulcis. When the vapour pressure deficit of the air around a single leaf in a cuvette was varied from 10 to 30 Pa kPa-1 in 5 Pa kPa-1 steps, while holding the remainder of the plant at a vapour presure deficit of 10 Pa kPa-1, the leaf conductance and net photosynthetic rate of the leaf decreased in all species. The rate of transpiration increased initially with increase in vapour pressure deficit in all species, but in several species a maximum transpiration rate was observed at 20 to 25 Pa kPa-1. Concurrent measurements of the leaf water potential by in situ psychrometry showed that an increase in the vapour pressure deficit decreased the leaf water potential in all species. The decrease was greatest in woody species, and least in herbaceous species. When the vapour pressure deficit around the remainder of the plant was increased while the leaf in the cuvette was exposed to a low and constant vapour pressure deficit, similar responses in both degree and magnitude in the rates of transpiration and leaf conductance were observed in the remainder of the plant as those occurring when the vapour pressure deficit around the single leaf was varied. Increasing the external vapour pressure deficit lowered the water potential of the leaf in the cuvette in the woody species and induced a decrease in leaf conductance in some, but not all, speies. The decrease in leaf conductance with decreasing water potential was greater in the woody species when the vapour pressure deficit was increased than when it remained low and constant, indicating that changing the leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference had a direct effect on the stomata in these species. The low hydraulic resistance and maintenance of a high leaf water potential precluded such an analysis in the herbaceous species. We conclude that at least in the woody species studied, an increase in the vapour pressure deficit around a leaf will decrease leaf gas exchange through a direct effect on the leaf epidermis and sometimes additionally through a lowering of the mesophyll water potential.  相似文献

Summary Measurements were made of the photosynthetic gas exchange properties and water use efficiency of 19 species of mangrove in 9 estuaries with different salinity and climatic regimes in north eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rates differed significantly between species at the same locality, with the salt-secreting species, Avicennia marina, consistently having the highest CO2 assimilation rates and stomatal conductances. Proportional changes in stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate resulted in constant and similar intercellular CO2 concentrations for leaves exposed to photon flux densities above 800 mol·m-2·s-1 in all species at a particular locality. In consequence, all species at the same locality had similar water use efficiencies. There were, however, significant differences in gas exchange properties between different localities. Stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate both decreased with increasing salinity and with increasing leaf to air vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Furthermore, the slope of the relationship between assimilation rate and stomatal conductance increased, while intercellular CO2 concentration decreased, with increasing salinity and with decreasing ambient relative humidity. It is concluded from these results that the water use efficiency of mangroves increases with increasing environmental stress, in this case aridity, thereby maximising photosynthetic carbon fixation while minimising water loss.Contribution No. 459 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

The effect of short-term flooding was examined in 2-year-old apricot trees (Prunus armeniaca cv. Búlida). Six apricot trees of similar appearance were submitted to two treatments: three were irrigated daily, while the others were flooded for a period of 50 h by submerging the pots in plastic water tanks. The trees were removed from the water, drained and then placed in the same conditions as the control plants. A decrease in transpiration in the flooded trees with respect to the control plants was evident. The daily pattern of soil O2 concentration and plant hydraulic resistance followed a similar trend during the flooding. However, this relationship was not maintained throughout the experiment, since the O2 values increased rapidly when the waterlogging ceased, while plant hydraulic resistance only recovered at the end of the experiment when the original root system, damaged by flooded conditions, was replaced with new roots. In flooded trees, the midday leaf water potential decreased progressively from the beginning of flooding, but gradually recovered when the waterlogging ceased. Leaf conductance values of treated plants were slow to recover, reaching values of the control plants 8 days after the leaf water potential had recovered. The close relationship observed during most of the experiment between the leaf water parameters, leaf conductance and plant hydraulic conductance indicate that hydraulic messages are likely to play a dominant role in co-ordinating the observed responses of the shoot.  相似文献

Drought adaptations in two Californian evergreen sclerophylls   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Summary A field study was initiated to determine the patterns of water stress imposition and stomatal resistance to gas exchange in representative species of 2 evergreen sclerophyllous communities. In concurrent experiments plant water potential, temperature and vapor pressure gradient were varied to determine the relative importance of morphological and physiological parameters in delaying onset of water stress during drought periods. In general, stomatal and photosynthetic responses to water stress were similiar in both species. Both were able to fix carbon even when leaf water potentials dropped as low as-25 bars. Stomatal movements were positively correlated with soil water potential rather than to leaf water potential. However, water stress developed much more rapidly in Arbutus menziesii, a plant of more northerly distribution, than in Heteromeles arbutifolia where they occur on adjacent sites. Morphological parameters were primarily responsible for the very different patterns of water stress imposition. Consequently, Arbutus is limited to areas of shorter drought duration than is Heteromeles and this is reflected in their differing distributions.  相似文献
