We evaluated coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) levels in patients studied under suspicion of mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes (MDS) (n = 39). CoQ levels were quantified by HPLC, and the percentage of mtDNA depletion by quantitative real-time PCR. A high percentage of MDS patients presented with CoQ deficiency as compared to other mitochondrial patients (Mann–Whitney-U test: p = 0.001). Our findings suggest that MDS are frequently associated with CoQ deficiency, as a possible secondary consequence of disease pathophysiology. Assessment of muscle CoQ status seems advisable in MDS patients since the possibility of CoQ supplementation may then be considered as a candidate therapy.  相似文献

Telomeres progressively shorten with repeated somatic tissue cell division, their length being an indicator of cellular ageing. Telomeric dysfunction may be implicated in a variety of diseases. We measured mean telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) from patients with various rheumatologic diseases. Mean PBL telomere length was measured using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) assay in a control population (n = 130; age range: 3–94 years) and in subjects diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA; n = 86; age range: 31–82 years), psoriatic arthritis (PA; n = 56; age range: 26–79 years) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS; n = 59; age range: 21–75 years). These diseases are associated with chronic systemic inflammatory activity. Telomere length was also quantified in subjects with osteoarthritis (OA; n = 34; age range: 43–82 years) and osteoporosis (OP; n = 35; age range: 59–95 years), diseases without a chronic systemic inflammatory component. Telomere length in OA showed no differences from age-matched controls (p = 0.234), but was significantly shorter in OP (p = 0.001). Telomere length was significantly longer than controls in RA (p = 0.015), PA (p < 0.001) and AS (p < 0.001). Different patterns in telomere length from PBL are evidenced in rheumatologic pathologies, possibly dependent on the presence or absence of chronic systemic inflammation.  相似文献

The effects of metformin and pioglitazone on ghrelin, a physiologic regulator of appetite and food intake, have not been clearly established. In a randomized clinical trial, we randomly assigned 60 type 2 diabetic patients to either metformin (Group A; n = 30) or pioglitazone (Group B; n = 30) treatment groups. The groups were similar in their baseline characteristics. A standard fasting 75 g oral glucose tolerance test was performed at time zero before starting metformin or pioglitazone, and 3 months later. After 3 months of treatment, pioglitazone, but not metformin, was significantly associated with weight gain. Both groups experienced a significant reduction in fasting plasma glucose (p < 0.01), hemoglobin A1c (p < 0.01 in Group A and p < 0.05 in Group B), and insulin resistance (p < 0.01). The effect of metformin on preprandial ghrelin and its response to glucose challenge was not significant, while the pioglitazone group had a significant reduction in preprandial ghrelin levels after treatment (p < 0.05). The effect of pioglitazone on ghrelin was independent of changes in body weight, body mass index, glucose control, insulin resistance, and plasma insulin. In conclusion, treatment with pioglitazone is associated with a decrease in preprandial ghrelin levels and therefore, the weight gain and increased food intake related to pioglitazone use cannot be explained by its effects on ghrelin. The effect of pioglitazone on ghrelin is independent of changes in body weight, body mass index, plasma insulin, insulin resistance, or glucose control.  相似文献

This prospective study examined normalized stability differences based on dominance side and visual feedback. Subjects with low back pain (LBP) (n = 26; 9 men, 17 women) and without LBP (n = 28; 11 men, 17 women) participated in this study. All subjects were asked to maintain single leg standing balance with the contralateral hip flexed 90° for 25 s. The outcome measures included normalized holding duration and stability. The combined rotation (Rxyz) was also calculated to compare the upper and lower thorax and lumbar axes relative to the core spine axis. The holding duration was significantly different between groups (T = ?2.21, p = 0.03). The subjects without recurrent LBP (control group) demonstrated longer hold duration times (24.60 ± 4.2 s) than the subjects with recurrent LBP (21.2 ± 7.1 s). For the normalized hold duration, there was a significant difference between groups based on visual input (F = 7.13, p = 0.009). There was also a significant difference in standing stability based on visual input (F = 93.93, p = 0.0001) and trunk area (F = 101.51, p = 0.0001). In addition, the normalized stability was significantly different based on dominance and visual input (F = 11.28, p = 0.002). Therefore, trunk stability could prompt an uncoordinated bracing effect with poor proprioception from injury to passive structures or due to interference of pain during central processing of information in subjects with recurrent LBP.  相似文献

BackgroundBariatric surgery is widely performed to improve obesity-related disorders, but can lead to nutrient deficiencies. In this study we examined serum trace element concentrations before and after bariatric surgery.MethodsWe obtained serum trace element concentrations by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method in 437 patients (82% women, median preoperative body-mass index 46.7 kg/m2 [interquartile range 42–51]) undergoing either gastric banding (22.7%), sleeve gastrectomy (20.1%), or gastric bypass (57.3%) procedures. Trace element data were available for patients preoperatively (n = 44); and 3 (n = 208), 6 (n = 174), 12 (n = 122), 18 (n = 39), 24 (n = 44) and 36 months (n = 14) post-operatively. All patients were recommended to take a multivitamin-mineral supplement after surgery.ResultsCopper deficiency was found in 2% of patients before surgery; and after surgery deficiency rates ranged from 0 to 5% with no significant change in median concentrations during follow-up (p = 0.68). Selenium deficiency was reported in 2% of patients before surgery; and after surgery deficiency rates ranged from 11 to 15% with a near-significant change in median concentrations (p = 0.056). Zinc deficiency was reported in 7% before surgery; and after surgery deficiency rates ranged from 7 to 15% with no significant change in median concentrations (p = 0.39).ConclusionsIn bariatric surgery patients recommended to take multivitamin-mineral supplements, serum copper, zinc and selenium concentrations were mostly stable during the first years after bariatric surgery. There was a possible tendency for selenium concentrations to decline during the early postoperative period.  相似文献

A prospective observational study was carried out at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool, England, UK on children aged 1–6 years attending the pathology department for routine blood tests (n = 225). Whole blood manganese concentrations were measured plus the following markers of iron status; haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, RBC count, ferritin, transferrin saturation and soluble transferrin receptors. Multiple regression analysis was performed, with blood manganese as the dependent variable and factors of iron status, age and gender as independent variables. A strong relationship between blood manganese and iron deficiency was demonstrated (adjusted R2 = 34.3%, p < 0.001) and the primary contributing factors to this relationship were haematological indices and soluble transferrin receptors. Subjects were categorised according to iron status using serum ferritin, transferrin saturation and haemoglobin indices. Children with iron deficiency anaemia had higher median blood manganese concentrations (16.4 μg/L, range 11.7–42.4, n = 20) than children with iron sufficiency (11 μg/L, range 5.9–20.9, n = 59, p < 0.001). This suggests that children with iron deficiency anaemia may be at risk from manganese toxicity (whole blood manganese >20 μg/L), and that this may lead to neurological problems. Treatment of iron deficiency in children is important both to improve iron status and to reduce the risk of manganese toxicity.  相似文献

Gliomas are the most important group of malignant primary brain tumors and one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. During the last years, several studies have demonstrated that cannabinoids induce apoptosis of glioma cells and inhibit angiogenesis of gliomas in vivo. As the effects of cannabinoids rely on CB1 and CB2 receptors activation, the aim of the present study was to investigate both receptors protein expression in cellular membrane homogenates of human glial tumors using specific antibodies raised against these proteins. Additionally, we studied the functionality of the cannabinoid receptors in glioblastomas by using WIN 55,212-2 stimulated [35S]GTPγS binding.Western blot analysis showed that CB1 receptor immunoreactivity was significantly lower in glioblastoma multiforme (?43%, n = 10; p < 0.05) than in normal post-mortem brain tissue (n = 16). No significant differences were found for astrocytoma (n = 6) and meningioma (n = 8) samples. Conversely, CB2 receptor immunoreactivity was significantly greater in membranes of glioblastoma multiforme (765%, n = 9; p < 0.05) and astrocytoma (471%, n = 4; p < 0.05) than in control brain tissue (n = 10). Finally, the maximal stimulation of [35S]GTPγS binding by WIN 55,212-2 was significantly lower in glioblastomas (134 ± 4%) than in control membranes (183 ± 2%; p < 0.05). The basal [35S]GTPγS binding and the EC50 values were not significantly different between both groups. The present results demonstrate opposite changes in CB1 and CB2 receptor protein expression in human gliomas. These changes may be of interest for further research about the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids in glial tumors.  相似文献

Although subjects with recurrent low back pain (LBP) demonstrate altered trunk control, the kinematic and kinetic responses of the trunk have not been carefully investigated. This study was conducted to compare the standing time, spine range of motion (ROM), and dynamic postural steadiness index (DPSI) based on visual condition between subjects with and without recurrent LBP during upright one leg standing. Sixty-three individuals participated in the study, including 34 control subjects and 29 subjects with recurrent LBP. The DPSI was a composite of the medio-lateral (MLSI), anterior-posterior (APSI), and vertical steadiness indices (VSI) on a force platform. The control group demonstrated longer standing time (s) during the eyes-open condition than the LBP group (26.82 ± 6.03 vs. 19.87 ± 9.36; t = 2.96, p = 0.01). Regarding spine ROM, visual condition was significantly different between groups (F = 7.09, p = 0.01) and demonstrated interactions with spine region and group (F = 5.53, p = 0.02). For the kinetic measures, there was a significant interaction between visual conditions and indices (F = 25.30, p = 0.001). In the LBP group, the DPSI was significantly correlated with the MLSI (r = 0.59, p = 0.002), APSI (r = 0.44, p = 0.03), and VSI (r = 0.98, p = 0.01) in the eyes-closed condition. Overall, the results of this study indicated that the LBP group decreased thorax and lumbar spine rotations during the eyes-closed condition. The LBP group also demonstrated positive correlations with the kinetic indices, enhancing dynamic postural steadiness in the eyes-closed condition in order to possibly avoid pain or further injury. This dynamic postural steadiness strategy is necessary to improve kinetic and kinematic chain reactions in the LBP group. This compensatory pattern supports the development of optimal postural correction strategies to prevent LBP recurrence and might represent a chain reaction to protect trunk control without visual input.  相似文献

Smoking has been suggested as one of the risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) development. In order to investigate whether adverse effects of cigarette smoke in ALS have any association with increase in oxidative stress, disease severity, lipid hydroperoxides (LPO) and superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) levels were measured in biofluids of smoker and never smoker ALS patients and clinically correlated. Serum and CSF from sporadic ALS patients (n = 50) diagnosed with El Escorial criteria were collected in the study. Serum (n = 50) and CSF (n = 42) were also collected from normal healthy controls. The LPO levels were estimated using commercially available kits. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were used to quantitate SOD1. Their levels were further analyzed among smoker and never smoker subjects. Significantly elevated LPO in sera and CSF of ALS patients were observed (p < 0.05). There was considerably increased LPO in sera and CSF of smoker ALS subjects matched with disease severity as compared to never smoker ALS (p < 0.05). ALS group did not show any alteration in SOD1 when compared to controls (p > 0.05). In addition, no change has been observed in SOD1 levels in ALS subjects who smoke (p > 0.05). Increased LPO and unaltered SOD1 in ALS patients may suggest the neuro-pathological association of LPO with ALS disease independent of SOD1. With current findings, it may be proposed that LPO levels might constitute as probable biomarker for smoker ALS patients, however, it cannot be concluded without larger gender matched studies. Additional investigations are needed to determine whether LPO upregulation is primary or secondary to motor neuron degeneration in ALS.  相似文献

Loss of hand function and finger dexterity are main disabilities in the upper limb after stroke. An electromyography (EMG)-driven hand robot had been developed for post-stroke rehabilitation training. The effectiveness of the hand robot assisted whole upper limb training was investigated on persons with chronic stroke (n = 10) in this work. All subjects attended a 20-session training (3–5 times/week) by using the hand robot to practice object grasp/release and arm transportation tasks. Significant motor improvements were observed in the Fugl-Meyer hand/wrist and shoulder/elbow scores (p < 0.05), and also in the Action Research Arm Test and Wolf Motor Function Test (p < 0.05). Significant reduction in spasticity of the fingers as was measured by the Modified Ashworth Score (p < 0.05). The training improved the muscle co-ordination between the antagonist muscle pair (flexor digitorum (FD) and extensor digitorum (ED)), associated with a significant reduction in the ED EMG level (p < 0.05) and a significant decrease of ED and FD co-contraction during the training (p < 0.05); the excessive muscle activities in the biceps brachii were also reduced significantly after the training (p < 0.05).  相似文献

Introduction: This prospectively designed study analyzed the correlation of a new, non-invasive neurophysiological method (Motor Unit Number Index – MUNIX) with two established Motor Unit Number Estimation (MUNE) methods. Methods: MUNIX and incremental stimulation MUNE (IS-MUNE) were done in the abductor digiti minimi muscle (ADM), while MUNIX and spike-triggered averaging MUNE (STA-MUNE) were tested in the trapezius muscle. Twenty healthy subjects and 17 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were examined. Results: MUNIX and MUNE values correlated significantly (ADM: n = 108; Spearman-Rho; r = 0.88; p < 0.01; trapezius muscle: n = 49; Spearman-Rho; r = 0.46; p < 0.01). Discussion: MUNIX indeed reflects the number of motor units in a muscle, and may sensibly be recorded from the trapezius muscle. With MUNIX being both much more patient friendly and much more rapid to assess than MUNE, the results support the use of MUNIX when motor unit number assessment is desired.  相似文献

We studied the immunomodulatory effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on single cell expression of IFN-γ and TNF-α cytokines in T cell subsets of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients (n = 22) and normal healthy subjects (n = 22). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were cultured with live Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) with or without 1,25(OH)2D3 (10?7 M) for 48 h. T cell subsets positive for IFN-γ and TNF-α were enumerated by flow cytometry and the culture supernatants were assayed for both the cytokines using ELISA. In both NHS and PTB patients, a significantly reduced percentage of IFN-γ and TNF-α expressing CD3+, CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+ T cells were observed in cultures stimulated with live MTB and treated with 1,25(OH)2D3 compared to cultures without 1,25(OH)2D3 (NHS; CD3+ IFN-γ+: p < 0.0001; CD3+TNF-α +: p = 0.0292 and PTB; CD3+ IFN-γ+: p = 0.0292; CD3+ TNF-α +: p = 0.0028). The levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α in the culture supernatants of 1,25(OH)2D3 treated cultures were also found to be significantly decreased in both groups (NHS; IFN-γ: p = 0.0001; TNF-α: p < 0.0001) and (PTB; IFN-γ: p < 0.0001; TNF-α: p < 0.0001). A positive correlation was observed between IFN-γ and TNF-α expressing CD3+CD8+ T cells in MTB stimulated cultures treated with or without 1,25(OH)2D3 in NHS (p = 0.0001; p = 0.001, respectively) and PTB patients (p = 0.002; p = 0.005, respectively). The present study revealed the suppressive effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on single cell expression of IFN-γ and TNF-α by CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+ T cells in pulmonary tuberculosis. This suppressive effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on proinflammatory and Th1 cytokine positive cells might have a role in reducing inflammation at the site of infection.  相似文献

Introduction/objectivesThe role of the placenta in diabetic mothers on fetal development and programming is unknown. Prolactin (PRL) produced by decidual endometrial cells may have an impact. Although full-length PRL is angiogenic, the processed form by bone morphogenetic protein-1 (BMP-1) and/or cathepsin D (CTSD) is antiangiogenic. The objectives were to investigate the involvement of decidual PRL and its antiangiogenic fragments in placentas from type-1 diabetic women (T1D) and from pregnant diabetic rats with lower offspring weights than controls.MethodsPRL, BMP-1, and CTSD gene expressions and PRL protein level were assessed in T1D placentas (n = 8) at delivery and compared to controls (n = 5). Wistar rats received, at day 7 of pregnancy, streptozotocin (STZ) (n = 5) or nicotinamide (NCT) plus STZ (n = 9) or vehicle (n = 9). Placental whole-genome gene expression and PRL western blots were performed at birth.ResultsIn human placentas, PRL (p < 0.05) and BMP-1 (p < 0.01) gene expressions were increased with a higher amount of cleaved PRL (p < 0.05) in T1D than controls. In rats, diabetes was more pronounced in STZ than in NCT–STZ group with intra-uterine growth restriction. Decidual prolactin-related protein (Dprp) (p < 0.01) and Bmp-1 (p < 0.001) genes were up-regulated in both diabetic groups, with an increased cleaved PRL amount in the STZ (p < 0.05) and NCT–STZ (p < 0.05) groups compared to controls. No difference in CTSD gene expression was observed in rats or women.ConclusionsAlterations in the levels of the PRL family are associated with maternal diabetes in both rats and T1D women suggesting that placental changes in these hormones impact on fetal development.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize the association between adipocyte enlargement and circulating levels of serum amyloid A (SAA). Furthermore, we wanted to search for possible associations with measures of glycemic control and levels of circulating adipokines and/or inflammatory markers in men and women with a large range in body mass index. The study cohort consisted of 167 subjects, 114 non-diabetic and 53 with Type 2 diabetes. Adipocyte diameter as well as circulating levels of SAA, C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, leptin, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, glucose and insulin were measured. Women had higher serum levels of SAA than men (p = 0.044). SAA levels were weakly but positively correlated with BMI (p = 0.043) and % body fat (p = 0.027) in all subjects as well as subcutaneous adipocyte diameter (p = 0.034) in women. Furthermore, in all subjects we found correlations between SAA levels and levels of CRP (p < 0.001), interleukin-6 (p < 0.001), leptin (p = 0.003), insulin (p = 0.006), HbA1c (p = 0.02) and HOMA-IR (p = 0.002). A majority of the correlations were strongest in women. In conclusion, serum levels of SAA are strongly correlated with serum levels of inflammatory markers as well as measures of glycemic control. There seems to be large sex differences in these associations suggesting that sex-specific factors need to be considered when analyzing SAA levels in relation to metabolic disease.  相似文献

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial of a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A with daily zinc supplementation was conducted with children in Mojo village, Surabaya City. Children aged 48 to 60 months were randomized to receive a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A plus zinc sulfate (n = 12) or a single dose of 200,000 I.U. of vitamin A (n = 12) plus placebo six days a week for six months. Children were evaluated weekly for nutrient intake and for IGF-1, C-reactive protein levels, gamma globulin levels, serum zinc, serum retinol, bone age and the index height for age at six months. At the end of the study, there was a significant increase in the serum retinol level (p < 0.03), serum zinc level (p < 0.03), IGF-1 hormone (p < 0.04) and Z-score height for age (p < 0.001), bone age (p < 0.01), and gamma globulin level (p < 0.04) and a significant decrease in the amount of infection/inflammation measured by CRP level (p < 0.001). There was also a significant correlation between CRP level and height for age (p < 0.01), and between gamma level and height for age (p < 0.01).These results suggest that combined vitamin A and zinc supplementation reduces the risk of infection and increases linear growth among children, and thus may play a key role in controlling infection and stunted growth for children under five years old.  相似文献

We explored the relationships between surface-soil (1–20 cm) organic carbon isotopic signatures and associated climatic factors in central-east Asia in an attempt to develop transfer functions that can be used to retrieve the paleoclimatic information stored in the thick eolian–paleosol sequences within the area. Our analysis shows that the negative correlation between the surface-soil organic δ13C values and the mean annual precipitation is robust (R2 = 0.453; n = 196; p < 0.05) and the negative correlation with the growing-season (April–September) precipitation is more significant (R2 = 0.4966; n = 196; p < 0.05). Our study further shows that the positive correlation between the surface-soil organic δ13C values and mean growing-season aridity is most significant (R2 = 0.5805; n = 196; p < 0.05). We have smoothed both the organic δ13C values and the mean growing-season aridity values using a 3-point moving-window average-filter method in an attempt to remove some of random errors and found that the positive correlation between the two is further increased (R2 =  0.7784; n =  192; p < 0.05). These robust linear relationships demonstrate their value in reconstructing paleoclimate changes in the study area. The documented climatic dependency of the surface-soil carbon isotopic composition in the study area might have resulted both from the humidity-related isotopic enrichment processes of the dominant C3 plants (stomatal conductance and photosynthetic discrimination) and from the aridity-related abundance of C4 plants (mainly Chenopodiaceae species) along the S–N bioclimatic gradient.  相似文献

BackgroundDespite universal healthcare in some countries, lower socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with worse cancer survival. The influence of SES on head and neck cancer (HNC) survival is of immense interest, since SES is associated with the risk and prognostic factors associated with this disease.Patients and methodsNewly diagnosed HNC patients from 2003 to 2010 (n = 2124) were identified at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Principal component analysis was used to calculate a composite score using neighbourhood-level SES variables obtained from the 2006 Canada Census. Associations of SES with overall survival were evaluated in HNC subsets and by p16 status (surrogate for human papillomavirus).ResultsSES score was higher for oral cavity (n = 423) and p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer (OPC, n = 404) patients compared with other disease sites. Lower SES was associated with worse survival [HR 1.14 (1.06–1.22), p = 0.0002], larger tumor staging (p < 0.001), current smoking (p < 0.0001), heavier alcohol consumption (p < 0.0001), and greater comorbidity (p < 0.0002), but not with treatment regimen (p > 0.20). After adjusting for age, sex, and stage, the lowest SES quintile was associated with the worst survival only for OPC patients [HR 1.66 (1.09–2.53), n = 832], primarily in the p16-negative subset [HR 1.63 (0.96–2.79)]. The predictive ability of the prognostic models improved when smoking/alcohol was added to the model (c-index 0.71 vs. 0.69), but addition of SES did not (c-index 0.69).ConclusionSES was associated with survival, but this effect was lost after accounting for other factors (age, sex, TNM stage, smoking/alcohol). Lower SES was associated with greater smoking, alcohol consumption, comorbidity, and stage.  相似文献

The abdominal muscle activity has been shown to be variable in subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) when respiratory demand increases and their recruitment pattern may change the mechanics, as well as the work and cost of breathing. The scientific evidence in subjects “at risk” for the development of COPD may be important to understand the natural history of this disease. This study aims to evaluate the effect of inspiratory and expiratory loads on the abdominal muscle activity during breathing in subjects “at risk” for the development of COPD and healthy. Thirty-one volunteers, divided in “At Risk” for COPD (n = 17; 47.71 ± 5.11 years) and Healthy (n = 14; 48.21 ± 6.87 years) groups, breathed at the same rhythm without load and with 10% of the maximal inspiratory or expiratory pressures, in standing. Surface electromyography was performed to assess the activation intensity of rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique and transversus abdominis/internal oblique (TrA/IO) muscles, during inspiration and expiration. During inspiration, in “At Risk” for COPD group, RA muscle activation was higher with loaded expiration (p = 0.016); however, in Healthy group it was observed a higher activation of external oblique and TrA/IO muscles (p < 0.050). During expiration, while in “At Risk” for COPD group, RA muscle activation was higher with loaded inspiration (p = 0.009), in Healthy group TrA/IO muscle showed a higher activation (p = 0.025). Subjects “at risk” for the development of COPD seemed to have a specific recruitment of the superficial layer of ventrolateral abdominal wall for the mechanics of breathing.  相似文献

There is an increasing interest in assessing the relationship between climatic oscillations, environmental contaminants and the modelling of animal physiological and morphological responses. We therefore undertook a study of skull condylobasal length (CBL; reflecting body size) and bone mineral density (BMD) in 87 East Greenland male polar bears (Ursus maritimus) sampled in the time period of 1892–2010. The purpose of the study was to investigate if these measures are potential candidates as indicators for stress associated with climate change and long-range transported toxic industrial chemicals. The analyses showed that both BMD and CBL in polar bears sampled in period 4 (1999–2010, n = 57) were significantly lower when compared with period 2 (1920–1936, n = 19) (both p < 0.02). Groups of persistent organohalogen contaminants (PCBs [polychlorinated biphenyls], DDT [dichlordiphenyltrichlorethane], HCH [hexachlorocyclohexane], HCB [hexachlorobenzene], chlordanes, dieldrin, PBDEs [polybrominated diphenyl ethers]) were measured in period 4 and multiple regression analyses controlling for age showed that dieldrin had a significant negative effect on BMD (p = 0.03, n = 52) while significant positive correlations with CBL were found for DDT, dieldrin and PBDE (all p < 0.05, n = 52). When testing the correlation with the North Atlantic Oscillation climate index no significant relationship was found for BMD (p = 0.97, r = −0.01, n = 27) nor CBL (p = 0.31, r = −0.2, n = 27). We therefore suggest that BMD and body size have decreased in East Greenland polar bear males over the past 120 years and that exposure to organohalogen contaminants may explain the BMD reductions. It is, however, not entirely clear if and how climatic oscillations affected the reductions in body size and BMD mainly because of the limited sample size in period 2 and lower mean age in period 4. Therefore, precautions should be taken towards a final conclusion on BMD and CBL as bioindicators for climate oscillations and exposure to toxic environmental chemicals. It is recommended that the sampling and archiving of East Greenland polar bear skulls continue in order to further explore how CBL and BMD reflect individual and population response upon exposure to environmental stress.  相似文献
