Antiphonal responses of newly fledged bank swallows (Riparia riparia) to the calls of their parents during the joined flights to and from the home burrow suggest that recognition of parents by offspring is a mechanism promoting family cohesion, a necessary condition for the adequate provisioning of chicks in this highly colonial species. Paternal and maternal calls used while leading chicks revealed higher inter-than intra-individual variability in temporal and frequency parameters, indicating that these calls could reliably identify individuals. When tested in the field at the onset of the fledging period, chicks answered significantly more playbacks of parent calls than of alien adult calls. Quantified observations of the rearing activity of the parents suggest that chick-parent recognition is based on familiarity, because of the chicks' differential exposure to the parental calls prior to fledging. During the development of the chicks in the burrow, both parents (which share the rearing activities equally) often call before feeding the chicks.  相似文献

In study 1, bank swallow (Riparia riparia) chicks were exchanged with like-aged chicks from other broods. Parents accepted chicks that were transferred into their nests at age 15 days or younger; rejection began to occur at 16 to 17 days. In study 2, chicks' vocalizations were recorded in the burrow. We found that an immature begging call given by young chicks is replaced by a ‘signature’ call at 15 to 17 days of age. An acoustic analysis suggested that these calls are individually distinctive. Study 3 was a playback experiment designed to test whether the chicks' signature calls are a sufficient cue for parental recognition. We found that parents would approach a speaker broadcasting the calls of their chicks in preference to one simultaneously broadcasting the calls of alien chicks. The pattern of results suggests that parental recognition is based on the chicks' signature calls and that development of recognition is dependent on the development of the call.  相似文献

Egg-switching choice experiments involving forty-two adult royal terns in eight choice situations at Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina, revealed that incubating adults consistently recognized their own single egg when placed in a wrong but adjacent nest. Individual egg colour and marking differences probably play the major role, but features of nest site (and/or of adjacent adults) were also shown to play a significant role in recognition and settling. Only two chick-switching experiments were done, with four chicks. Three of the returning adults failed to recognize their own chicks until the latter vocalized; the fourth recognized its silent chick and called it away from the nest site. The adaptive value of individual recognition of eggs and chicks is considered for this group (Thalasseus) of densely nesting, crêche-forming terns.  相似文献

Observations of the behavior of newly-fledged bank swallows suggest that sibling recognition may be a mechanism promoting location of the home burrow in their large, dense colonies and of cohesion of family groups following departure from the burrow. We tested for sibling recognition in the field by comparing the antiphonal response of sibling groups to the recorded calls of own vs. unrelated sibling groups. Birds responded more to the calls of their own groups. In a laboratory experiment we raised chicks in isolation from 8–10 to 20 days of age and exposed them to a call of an unrelated chick. When tested in a choice situation at 15–20 days, chicks approached the familiar call in preference to a different call which they had not previously heard. We suggest that sibling recognition is based on familiarity, i.e., that it requires a period in which the calls of siblings are learned.  相似文献

Past research has shown that in the colonial bank swallow and cliff swallow, parents and offspring recognize one another by calls, enabling parents to locate and feed only their own chicks. To test the hypothesis that recognition traits are adaptations to coloniality, we examined parent-offspring recognition in the related but non-colonial species, the barn swallow. To allow cross-species comparisons, we used the same methods that had been used in the previous swallow studies. We carried out four studies. (1) Cross-fostering experiments done immediately before fledging gave no evidence of recognition. (2) In a playback experiment, parents gave no indication that they recognized the calls of their offspring. (3) In another playback experiment, chicks responded more strongly to the calls of their parents than to the calls of unrelated adults. The degree of recognition, however, was somewhat weaker than that seen in the two colonial swallow species. (4) Newly fledged young did not creche after fledging. Rather, family groups generally stayed apart from one another for almost 2 weeks, while parental care was still being given. The comparative data suggest that parent-offspring recognition via individually distinctive cues evolved in response to the intermingling of young associated with colonial living, and it thus weakly expressed in barn swallows compared to cliff swallows and bank swallows.  相似文献

Adult robins are able to discriminate between chicks hatched in their own and in other territories. The latter are much less likely to be fed and are more likely to be attacked than the adult's own young. As chicks grow older they become less likely to beg at adults other than their parents. Adults rarely feed chicks from other territories unless they have fledged young of their own. Possible causes of these different responses are discussed and it is emphasized that these need not involve individual recognition. Males appear to be more likely than females to feed chicks hatching in other territories. This could be the result of the females learning about their chicks while brooding them. Males may benefit more, on average, from feeding other pairs' chicks than do females. There has been a previous report that robins are unable to make the discriminations reported in this paper and possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. It is conceivable that it reflects a difference between populations.  相似文献

This paper summarises observations on the breeding behaviour of the Pink-backed Pelican Pelecanus rufescens at Rakewa, Nyanza Province, Kenya, where the species has bred for at least 200 years. Observations covered most of one breeding season, November 1962 to April 1963. Of at least 250 nests, 35 were closely observed. The community consisted of about 815 pelicans of which about 540 were adults. The death rate is estimated at 13% per annum and the mean life-span at about seven and a half years. The breeding site, in trees above a small swamp, is 15 miles from the favoured feeding ground. The colony is protected by local Luo people. The pelicans feed and roost mainly at the Miriu Delta, 15 miles away, travelling between the two places so high up as to be unseen. They fish in the early morning, visiting the colony to feed young mainly between 09.00 and 13.00 hrs. Once the young are large both parents roost away from the colony at the Delta. The breeding season takes place from August, towards the end of the rains, to March, at the end of the dry season. The birds breed in synchronised groups, the breeding cycle for any group occupying five months. Nuptial display is performed on the nest trees, by single pairs or small groups. Two main displays are described, “pointing” and “bill-clapping”. Mating occurs on the nest, with little preliminary display. Nests are slight stick structures, repaired from year to year, and used by other pelicans if abandoned. The clutch is normally two eggs, occasionally three. Both sexes incubate, with infrequent change-overs, for 33–35 days. The chick is first brick-red, becoming covered with white down. Feathers break through at about 12 days and have covered much of the body by 30 days. At 40 days chicks can recognise their own parent. They fly at 70–75 days. Parents feed chicks by regurgitation, sometimes into the nest. They brood them closely at first, but after 10–12 days leave them much alone. Large chicks thrust the head far into the parental gullet, and injuries result from such feeding struggles. Feeding usually occurs before mid-day, each parent normally delivering two feeds with a rest between. Curious convulsive movements of the young are probably begging displays. Forty-two young hatched in 35 nests, an average of 0.6 chicks/egg laid. The heaviest mortality among young occurred between 10–30 days when 31% of all chicks died. Young which flew were produced at the rate of 0.47/egg hatched, 0.28/egg laid, and 0.57/pair.  相似文献

Studies on the breeding biology of Puffinus puffinus were carried out in 1963 and 1964 at the large colony on Skokholm, Wales. During the six weeks before laying the birds spent up to a quarter of the days in the burrows, but the ten days immediately prior to laying were normally spent at sea. There is a prolonged laying period, with a marked peak in the first half of May. Details are given of a second egg being laid when the first was deserted immediately after being laid. The male took the first incubation spell. The incubation spells ranged from one to 26 days and averaged six. The incubation period was about 51 days. The frequency of visits to land by breeding birds, unlike those by non-breeders, was not affected by the moon. On hatching, the chicks grew rapidly and reached maximum weights of between 505 and 755 gm. sometime between 39 and 61 days. There was a variable desertion period, usually eight or nine days, before the chicks left the island about 70 days after hatching. During the feeding period the chick received about two feeds every three days. There is evidence that adults visited the chicks more frequently than this. There was no correlation between growth of the chicks, their feeding rates or fledging weights and the time of laying. There was a high survival (about 95 %) of chicks during the fledging period but some eggs were lost in disputes for burrows. Nine pairs in 1964 were unable to raise two young simultaneously. Parents altered their feeding rhythms to try to feed two young but did not themselves lose weight. It is suggested that the critical factor in the production of young is the availability of food for the young immediately after they leave the colonies.  相似文献

Homing by the nocturnal Namib Desert spider Leucorchestris arenicola (Araneae: Sparassidae) is comparable to homing in diurnal bees, wasps and ants in terms of path length and layout. The spiders'' homing is based on vision but their basic navigational strategy is unclear. Diurnal homing insects use memorised views of their home in snapshot matching strategies. The insects learn the visual scenery identifying their nest location during learning flights (e.g. bees and wasps) or walks (ants). These learning flights and walks are stereotyped movement patterns clearly different from other movement behaviours. If the visual homing of L. arenicola is also based on an image matching strategy they are likely to exhibit learning walks similar to diurnal insects. To explore this possibility we recorded departures of spiders from a new burrow in an unfamiliar area with infrared cameras and analysed their paths using computer tracking techniques. We found that L. arenicola performs distinct stereotyped movement patterns during the first part of their departures in an unfamiliar area and that they seem to learn the appearance of their home during these movement patterns. We conclude that the spiders perform learning walks and this strongly suggests that L. arenicola uses a visual memory of the burrow location when homing.  相似文献

The first-year bird had hatched at a breeding site 5.5 km away from the place where it helped feed the nestlings and left its own natal nest on 11.6. 1984. The following grain characteristics: protein, arabinoxylan and dietary fibre content, viscosity and water holding capacity of wheat, rye and triticale of different ploidy levels were studied as to their effect on body weight gain (BWG), feed to gain ratio (FCR), apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn), dry matter digestibility (DMD) and apparent protein retention (APR) in young broiler chicks fed isograin and isoprotein diets based on these cereals. Highly significant correlations (p≤0.01) were found between physicochemical and biological quality indicators when all cereals were taken into account. A negative response of chicks to triticale was obtained only when chicks were fed diets containing the tetraploid forms, while the nutrition parameters of chicks fed diets containing the octo- and hexaploid triticale, with rye genome shares of 1 : 3 and 1 : 2, did not differ (p≥0.05) from those fed a wheat diet. Rye diets yielded the lowest BWG, AMEn and DMD and the poorest FCR. The results indicate that as long as the share of the R genome is a minor component of the total triticale genome pool, its antinutritional effect is masked by the wheat genome. The results also indicate that hexaploid triticale can constitute the sole cereal component in the diets of young broiler chicks.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of tranquilization on the responses of ewes to alien lambs substituted for own lambs 48–72 h after parturition. Eleven ewes whose young had been taken away, and nine ewes with a lamb of their own, were penned with alien lambs following a single injection of the tranquilizer perphenazine. Seventeen control ewes, including 15 whose only young had been taken away, were also exposed to alien lambs after receiving placebo injections of normal saline. The responses of the ewes to the alien lambs were studied over a four-day period.All ten tranquilized ewes exposed to a single alien lamb without their own young present readily accepted the strange offspring. All of the tranquilized ewes accompanied by one of their own offspring, and a single ewe that was given an alien set of twins in place of her own single lamb, subsequently rejected the strange young. Six of 15 control ewes, with own young removed, accepted alien lambs. The remaining 11 control ewes rejected alien lambs. The success of fostering appeared to be positively related to the persistence of sucking attempts by the lamb, and inversely related to the aggressiveness of the ewe. Tranquilization under the conditions employed can be an efficient technique for fostering single alien lambs on post-partum ewes that have lost their own lambs, but does not facilitate fostering on ewes with their own young present.  相似文献

The carry-over effect of a pre-starter diet (0 to 3 days of age) deficient in lysine on subsequent growth and body composition (3 to 10 days) was examined in two experiments on male broiler chicks raised in cages. In experiment 1, lysine deficiency was applied from 3 to 10 days after providing a balanced pre-starter control feed (D+, 1.40% lysine) or a lysine deficient feed (D−) during the first 3 days. Three levels of deficiency (A = 0.63%, B = 0.72%, C = 0.82%) were tested. Growth and feed intake were higher in D+ than in D− chicks ( P < 0.001). However, the feed conversion ratio from 3 to 10 days of age was higher in D+ chicks ( P < 0.001); pre-starter and starter feeds interacted ( P < 0.04) with the feed conversion of treatment D+/A = 2.07 being better than treatment D+/A = 2.61 ( P < 0.05). This suggests that chicks deficient from hatching exhibit a relatively lower sensitivity to lysine deficiency than chicks started on a control diet. In experiment 2, performance, slaughter parameters and body composition were analysed at 3 and 10 days of age, in chicks having received a lysine deficient feed (D0, 0.72% lysine), a control feed (D+, 1.40% lysine) or having been pair fed with control feed adjusted to D0 intake (PF) from 0 to 3 days of age, and then fed D0 ad libitum from 3 to 10 days of age. At 3 days, PF chicks had a higher body weight ( P < 0.05) than D0, and thus a better feed conversion. Body composition in relative values was little or not affected by dietary treatments, but the breast muscle weight at 3 days was higher in D+ and PF chicks compared with D0 ( P < 0.05) and this effect was even accentuated at 10 days of age. The present work confirms that early nutrition can have subsequent consequences on the adjustment of fast growing broiler chicks to their nutritional conditions. It also suggests that breast muscle development is a more reactive parameter than whole body composition in this kind of experiments.  相似文献

Summary The body of theory concerning life-history strategies predicts that the duration of high-mortality stages should be minimized by natural selection. This is especially applicable to the avian pre-flight stage, during which growth rates typically are rapid. Using the American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) as a paradigm, I propose a developmental strategy by which young animals can lower their mortality rates by an accelerated (and deceptive) acquisition of adult or adult-like characters. The benefit accrues when predators misidentify the vulnerable young as adults and fail to attack them because adults are much less vulnerable. This strategy, termed adult automimicry, is most likely to occur in precocial species living in open habitats.American Avocets are large, precocial, open-country shorebirds that first fly when about 4–5 weeks old. They develop a juvenal, plumage in their third week that resembles adult breeding plumage in pattern and color, even though plumage details are different. At this time chicks begin using adult foraging techniques and tend to move away rather than hide from potential predators. A few weeks later they acquire a first winter plumage that resembles adult winter plumage. Thus, avocet chicks appear unusually adult-like after their second week. This should make it difficult for distant predators to distinguish flightless chicks from volant adults.  相似文献

Food availability is often variable during the breeding season. Parents with nonmobile, altricial young have no choice but to accept changes in local food availability, whereas in precocial animals, the parents may lead their young away from poor sites to areas that have rich resources and/or are safe from predators. We investigated the latter hypotheses in the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus, a precocial shorebird that raises its young in two habitats: on lakeshore and in saltmarsh. Parents move with their broods from saltmarsh to lakeshore, especially late in the breeding season, and we hypothesized that lakeshores provide more food than the saltmarsh. Consistent with our hypotheses, plover chicks grew faster on the shore, and the difference in growth rates between the two habitats was amplified later in the breeding season. In addition, brood survival was higher on lakeshore than in saltmarsh and decreased with hatching date. Taken together, our results suggest that Kentish plover parents increase their reproductive success by switching brood-rearing habitats strategically.  相似文献

Parents ought to restrict costly parental care to their genetic offspring and, particularly when the risk of misdirecting care is high, parent‐offspring recognition may evolve. I tested whether adult cave swallows, which nest in dense colonies and feed fledglings in mixed‐family groups, discriminate against unrelated young, using temporary chick transfers at two nestling ages and a cross‐fostering experiment. Temporary chick transfers indicated that parents bias feedings toward their own offspring near fledging (18 d) but not at about halfway through the nesting period (10 d). I also examined how parents learn to identify their offspring by cross‐fostering young 3 d after hatching and testing parental response 2 wks later. Adults did not favor their own offspring over unrelated nestlings when both were unfamiliar to the focal parents. However, when parents encountered two of their own offspring, one of which was reared by foster parents, they preferentially fed the familiar nestling. By recognizing young, cave swallow parents reduce some risks of misdirected parental investment (mobile fledglings) but not others (extra‐pair young and intraspecific brood parasitism).  相似文献

Abstract: We investigated the precision and accuracy of an infrared burrowscope for detecting sooty shearwater (Pufffinus griseus) chicks at 13 plots from 3 islands in southern New Zealand in 2003. We partially excavated burrows systems to reveal the entire burrow contents after 2 teams of observers had prospected all burrow entrances. Accuracy was similar between islands and observer teams at approximately 85%. The majority of the inaccuracy stemmed from failure to detect some chicks. Logistic regression modeling identified 4 burrow characteristics occurring between the entrance and the nest-site that influenced detection of burrow occupants. Detection was lower at nest-sites further from burrow entrances, in burrows with a high rate of burrow division, and in burrows with a high level of curvature. There was a positive relationship between the interaction of rate of division and curvature and detection of chicks. Distance from the burrow entrance was the only parameter that could be reliably used as a predictor of detection rate, so a reduced model containing only this variable was constructed to correct for burrowscope bias. The correction factor performed well on The Snares and Bench Island where predicted bias was very similar to observed levels (within 5%), but bias was overestimated on Putauhinu by up to 19.1%. Consistent bias, lack of damage to burrows from excavation, and the successful application of a correction factor all indicate the value of further testing burrowscope accuracy on other burrow-nesting seabird species.  相似文献

Recently we proposed that early feather pecking is a form of social exploration. Social recognition, important for exploration, is a lateralized function in the domestic chick. Lateralization of functions can be influenced by light exposure late in embryonic development. Therefore, we investigated whether this light exposure affected early posthatching feather-pecking behaviour in domestic chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus. White leghorn embryos either were exposed to light or remained in darkness in the last week of incubation. After hatching, they were housed in groups of two light-exposed and two dark-incubated chicks. Light-exposed chicks showed more feather pecking than did their dark-incubated cagemates. Dark-incubated chicks preferred to direct feather pecks to unfamiliar peers than to familiar peers; light-exposed chicks showed no preference. These effects were present in the first week after hatching and remained at least another 3 weeks. These results support the hypothesis that early gentle feather pecking is part of the normal behavioural repertoire of young chicks and influences social exploration. We discuss a possible mechanism underlying these results. We also suggest that it may be worthwhile not to expose embryos to light during the last week of incubation when housing hatchlings in commercial conditions, where feather pecking is a serious problem.  相似文献

Invasions by alien plants significantly affect native biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. We conducted a 5-year field experiment to investigate potential effects of the annual invasive plant Impatiens glandulifera on both the native above-ground vegetation and the soil seed bank in a deciduous forest in Switzerland. Eight years after the establishment of I. glandulifera, we set up plots in patches invaded by the alien plant, in plots from which the invasive plant had been manually removed and in plots which were not yet colonized by the invasive plant. We examined plant species richness, diversity and plant species composition in the above-ground vegetation and soil seed bank in all plots one year and five years after the initiation of the experiment. The 36 plots (3 plot types × 6 replicates × 2 sites) were equally distributed over two forest sites. Neither the native above-ground vegetation nor the soil seed bank was influenced by the presence of I. glandulifera one year after the start of the field experiment. After five years, however, plant species richness of both the above-ground vegetation and the soil seed bank was reduced by 25% and 30%, respectively, in plots invaded by the alien plant compared to plots from which I. glandulifera had been removed or uninvaded plots. Furthermore, plots invaded by the alien plant had a lower total seedling density (reduction by 60%) and an altered plant species composition in the soil seed bank compared to control plots. Our field experiment indicates that negative effects of the annual invasive plant on the native above-ground vegetation and soil seed bank of deciduous forests become visible with a delay of several years.  相似文献

Communication about predators can reveal the effects of both conspecific and heterospecific audiences on signalling strategy, providing insight into signal function and animal cognition. In species that alarm call to their young, parents face a fundamental dilemma: calling can silence noisy offspring and so make them less likely to be overheard, but can also alert predators that young are nearby. Parents could resolve this dilemma by being sensitive to the current vulnerability of offspring, and calling only when young are most at risk. Testing whether offspring vulnerability affects parental strategy has proved difficult, however, because more vulnerable broods are often also more valuable. We tested experimentally whether parent white-browed scrubwren, Sericornis frontalis, assessed brood noisiness when alarm calling near nests. When a model predator was nearby, parents gave more alarm calls when playbacks simulated noisy broods, yet brood noisiness did not affect adult calling when only a control model was present. Parents were therefore sensitive to the tradeoff between silencing young and alerting predators to the presence of nests. Our study demonstrates that receiver vulnerability can affect signalling decisions in species other than primates.  相似文献
