The strategy of food choice by adult rats was studied after giving previously to them a balanced diet, a non-protein diet and/or a diet with calcium excess. Tests were carried out for food preference offering to the rats semi-purified diets differing in the contents of protein and calcium. Besides that, the taste of the food was changed adding to it saccharose, quinine, mint and caramel. Depending on the nutritional state of the rats significant differences were found in their preference for foods which was related to the general direction of homeostasis recovery. In protein malnutrition diets were chosen containing protein, while calcium content and taste were of secondary importance.  相似文献

The field slug, Deroceras reticulatum, a common pest of agricultural and horticultural crops, is a generalist herbivore with distinct preferences for particular food items. However, these preferences are not fixed, but are influenced by the recent dietary history of the slugs. In particular, slugs tend to select novel food items ('neophilia'). We investigated the basis of such influences, using artificial diets in which protein and carbohydrate composition could be controlled and non-nutritional ('secondary') chemicals added as flavours. The slugs showed no general inclination for neophilia based on taste alone. There was a possible learned association between protein content and taste, but this was weakly expressed. However, the slugs selected food items, when given a choice, containing nutrients that were deficient in earlier diets, even though all the food items contained the same familiar secondary taste chemicals. Injections of missing nutrients into the haemocoel of slugs inhibited such changes in food preference, indicating that slugs' feeding preferences are influenced directly by their internal nutritional status. We suggest that neophilia in D. reticulatum is a physiological response to a nutritional imbalance arising from a suboptimal diet. In the wolf spider, Hogna helluo , we tested the response to insect and spider prey chemical cues and whether they show a preference for cues associated with prey consumed most recently. Thirty adult female H. helluo were maintained on a diet of either females of a smaller co-occurring wolf spider ( Pardosa milvina ) or domestic crickets ( Acheta domesticus ). A single P. milvina or cricket nymph was maintained on filter paper for 24 h, after which the papers from both prey sources were simultaneously presented to individual H. helluo from each diet treatment group. H. helluo locomotor behavior on each treatment and initial substrate preference was recorded (n = 15/treatment). H. helluo fed crickets showed significantly longer residence time and decreased mobility on filter paper previously occupied by a cricket; spiders fed P. milvina showed longer residence times and decreased mobility on filter paper previously occupied by P. milvina . H. helluo fed P. milvina exhibited an initial preference for substrates previously occupied by P. milvina but H. helluo fed crickets did not show a corresponding initial preference for crickets. Results suggest that H. helluo can detect distant cues associated with P. milvina but not crickets before contacting the substrate and that H. helluo respond to chemical cues from prey and show a preference for those cues associated with their most recent prey.  相似文献

报道了在室内雌鼠自然动情条件下根田鼠两性个体配偶选择的3种熟悉性效应的5组实验结果,包括雌性对熟悉和陌生雄鼠、配偶和陌生雄鼠、配偶和熟悉雄鼠的择偶行为实验 , 雄性对熟悉和陌生雌鼠、配偶和陌生雌鼠的择偶行为实验。在实验前, 将1对性成熟的雌雄鼠 (非亲缘关系) 每天关养8 h 共8 d 建立熟悉性; 配对雌雄鼠至少生育1胎则为配偶关系。在 Y 形迷宫内的30 min 实验中, 两个被选择鼠分别以项链拴在横跨选择箱顶端中央的一根铁丝上, 限制它们在各自箱内活动; 而允许异性选择鼠从中立箱自由进入两个选择箱。记录选择鼠对异性被选择鼠的访问、社会探究、攻击、交配和友好行为的频次和时间。经Wilcoxon 关联样本 T 检验发现, 除交配行为不显著外, 雌性根田鼠均选择熟悉性较高的雄鼠; 而雄鼠不具这种选择性。该结果提示雌雄根田鼠的不同择偶行为也许就是反映该种婚配制度特征的直接行为过程。因此, 在择偶行为中, 雌性根田鼠表现的单配性倾向和雄鼠的多配性倾向, 只能以其婚配制度为一雄多雌制的假设来解释。我们的实验还说明在多配制田鼠中, 一雄多雌制与混交制在雌鼠择偶行为上是不同的, 而与单配制的相似或相近, 故简单地比较多配制与单配制则不能反映田鼠亚科动物婚配制度的多样性。  相似文献

Scent over-marking occurs when one individual places its scent mark on top of one deposited by a conspecific. Studies have shown that animals investigating an over-mark later behave as if the top-scent mark is more important than the bottom-scent mark. Differences in response to over-marks may reflect differences in social and mating systems. Here, we ascertained the length of time that meadow voles ( Microtus pennsylvanicus ) and prairie voles ( Microtus ochrogaster ), exposed to an over-mark, maintain a preference for the mark of the top-scent donor compared with that of the bottom-scent donor. If voles had no previous sexual experience with their top-scent and bottom-scent donors, male and female meadow voles maintained a preference for their top-scent donor's mark over their bottom-scent donor's mark for 48 h. In contrast, male and female prairie voles maintained such preferences for 24 h and 12 h, respectively. If voles had prior sexual experience with either their top- or bottom-scent donor, such experience did not affect the length of time meadow voles and male prairie voles maintained a preference for their top-scent donor. Female prairie voles maintained a 12-h preference for the top-scent mark if it belonged to the mate. If the mate was the bottom-scent donor, female prairie voles showed no preference for it or the top-scent mark. These findings are discussed within the framework that an association may exist between the manner in which voles respond to over-marks and their social and mating systems.  相似文献

1. Crab spiders (Thomisidae) are common flower-visiting spiders that ambush prey on inflorescences. As such, they require specific flowers or substrates for hunting, which are most often selected using sensory cues (e.g. vision). However, few studies have examined the visual preference of crab spiders for particular flowers. In this study, the visual preferences of the crab spider Ebrechtella tricuspidata for different inflorescence characteristics (e.g. colour and shape) were investigated. 2. The results showed that adult spiders explored all colours and shapes, whereas juvenile spiders displayed an overall preference for long (red) and short (purple) wavelength colours. Thus, differences in colour were not particularly important for E. tricuspidata with regard to visual attractiveness and selection. 3. However, inflorescence shape (e.g. tulip) was found to be a more desirable trait for selection, which was probably due to the provision of shelter. 4. These results also suggest that male preference for female spiders depended somewhat on the background colour (wavelength) of the flower on which the female was located.  相似文献

Biological odours of conspecifics are known to have strong influences on behavioural interaction in bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus. This experiment tested two hypotheses. (1) Olfactory cues from familiar and unfamiliar mature opposite-sex conspecifics differ in their attractiveness to males and females, and their behavioural reactions change with age. (2) A genetically based mechanism is involved in female recognition of kin.In a two-choice preference test, prepubertal males and females were more attracted to familiar than to unfamiliar odours of opposite-sex conspecifics, as manifested by more time spent sniffing familiar voles. As the young reached sexual maturity they shifted their odour preferences. Mature males and females preferred the novel odour of unrelated opposite-sex conspecifics to that of relatives. The results of experiments testing the second hypothesis indicate that females use a genetically based mechanism to recognise their kin. Young and mature females were able to recognise the odour of their biological but socially unknown fathers, and showed the same pattern of behaviour as females in previous experiments.The possible biological functions of kin recognition in bank voles are discussed.  相似文献

Larvae of Ceratitis capitata were tested for preference for different diets based on the ingredients of the standard diet used to rear flies in the laboratory. The nutritional value of these diets was also determined. The results showed that larvae are able to recognize the diets that are best from a nutritional viewpoint. When chemically defined diets were tested, larvae always preferred those containing the largest amount of protein, except for older larvae, which preferred protein-free diets. In a threshold study, larvae were able to recognize as little as 0.1 g yeast/100 ml diet and 1.5 casein/100 ml diet.  相似文献

Summary Food availability, food utilization patterns and levels of some nutritional factors in plants were studied in 1984–85 in an old-field community supporting low to moderate densities of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Food choice and preference indices were positively related to levels of proteins, and negatively related to levels of total phenolics and ADL fibers in plants. High quality resources for voles were resources that had the highest amount of proteins, and the lowest level of total phenolics and ADL fibers among available plant species. There were only two plants species among the available ones that possessed these characteristics, Festuca rubra and Vicia cracca and they represented 25 to 50% of the available biomass during summer. Vole densities of up to 64 animals/ha were therefore not limited by the availability of high quality resources. Fecal analyses performed on 267 animals in 1984 and 269 voles in 1985 showed that all voles ate high quality resources. Meadow voles appear to choose foods with high protein content and low levels of digestion inhibitors, and not on the basis of caloric content or availability. These observations contradict predictions arising from current antiherbivore hypotheses and lead us to reconsider these models in light of this new evidence.  相似文献

The effect of polaprezinc, a chelate compound consisting of zinc ion and L-carnosine, on abnormalities of taste sensation induced by feeding a zinc-deficient diet to rats was examined by using the two-bottle preference test (quinine hydrochloride as a bitter taste and sodium chloride as a salty taste). Rats were fed either a zinc-deficient or a zinc-sufficient diet. The zinc-deficient diet increased the preference for both taste solutions, while polaprezinc (at doses of 3 and 10 mg/kg) restored the altered taste preferences. We also evaluated the proliferation of taste bud cells using 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU). The BrdU incorporation into taste bud cells was significantly reduced in rats fed a zinc-deficient diet compared with rats fed a zinc-sufficient diet (from 50.8% to 45.0%, p<0.05) and this reduction was reversed by polaprezinc at doses of 1, 3, and 10 mg/kg, increasing to 50.2%, 53.5%, and 52.5%, respectively. These findings indicate that zinc deficiency induces the delayed of proliferation of taste bud cells, while polaprezinc improves cell proliferation. In conclusion, polaprezinc had a therapeutic effect in a rat model of abnormal taste sensation. Its mechanism of action was suggested to involve improvement of the decrease in taste bud cell proliferation caused by zinc deficiency.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of fur pigmentation in brown and black water voles (Arvicola terrestris L.) was performed. Morphology of pigment granules, their distribution along the hair layers and histology of hair bulbs were studied. Morphological data and the results of the analysis of segregation in the progeny, when brown voles were self-crossed and crossed with black ones, led to conclusion that fur colour of water voles is mediated by genes from the agouti series, precisely, black colour is determined by the extreme non-agouti allele (aeae genotype), and in brown voles which are homo- or heterozygous the colour is determined by the agouti allele (AA or Aae genotypes).  相似文献

Many animals self‐groom when they encounter the scent marks of opposite‐sex conspecifics. Self‐grooming transmits odiferous substances that contain information about the groomer’s condition, which is affected by its nutritional state. We tested the hypothesis that the amount of time that individuals self‐groom to opposite‐sex conspecifics is affected by the amount of protein in their diet and that of the scent donor. We did so by feeding meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) a diet containing 9%, 13%, or 22% dietary protein for 30 d and observing their self‐grooming behavior when they were exposed to bedding scented by an opposite‐sex conspecific (odor donor) fed one of the three diets, or fresh cotton bedding (control). The hypothesis was partially supported. We found that the protein content of the diet of male and female groomers did not affect the amount of time they self‐groomed. However, the protein content of the diet of male odor donors affected the amount of time that female voles spent self‐grooming. Female voles self‐groomed more in response to male odor donors fed a 22% protein‐content diet than to those produced by male odor donors fed either a 9% or a 13% protein‐content diet. Interestingly, the amount of time males self‐groomed was not affected by the protein content of the diet of the female odor donor. These results may, in part, be explained by the natural history of free‐living meadow voles, sex differences in costs associated with mate attraction and reproduction, and the direct or indirect benefits that females receive from males fed a diet high in protein content.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that intraspecific variations in mating systems are correlated with differences in the capacity of peripheral arginine vasopressin (AVP) to facilitate partner preferences. It has been hypothesized that differences in environmental conditions, Kansas being more xeric than Illinois, are responsible for some of the intraspecific differences in the mating systems between Kansas (KN) and Illinois (IL) prairie voles. We predicted that prairie voles from KN would be more behaviorally sensitive to peripheral AVP than prairie voles from IL. To test this hypothesis 60- to 120-day-old male and female, lab-reared, prairie voles originating from KN and IL received three subcutaneous injections of AVP or isotonic saline. Animals were then placed with an adult member of the opposite sex, designated a "partner," for a 1-hour period of cohabitation and subsequently tested for preference for the familiar partner versus a comparable stranger. Only KN males treated with AVP displayed a significant preference for the partner. Using the same experimental paradigm we also examined the ability of peripheral oxytocin (OT) to facilitate partner preference in KN prairie voles. OT facilitated partner preference in females, but not males. This finding was consistent with previous results describing the effects of peripheral OT in IL prairie voles. We also examined the hypothesis that the differential response of KN and IL males would be associated with differences in the distribution of AVP (V1a) receptors. However, there was no apparent difference in the distribution of V(1a) receptors between KN and IL males. The results of this study indicate that there is both intraspecific and intersexual variation in the regulation of social behavior in prairie voles. In addition, these findings suggest that the proximate causes of intraspecific variation may be predicted by knowledge of the habitat of origin.  相似文献

The aim with this study was to, under controlled conditions, determine the food preference of mountain haresLepus timidus Linnaeus, 1758 and bank volesClethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) for a substantial part of the woody plants potentially available for these herbivores during winter. In addition, we compared hare and vole preference patterns. Thirteen woody plant species were simultaneously presented to 9 captive voles and 9 captive hares in preference tests during winter. Consumption by hares from 50 g bundles (one per species) was measured after 3 h, whereas shoot consumption by voles was measured after 12 h. Both hares and voles preferred deciduous species to conifers,Populus tremula, andVaccinium myrtillus being the most preferred species. However, there was considerable variation in palatability among deciduous plant species and only a marginally significant correlation was found between hare and vole preference. One striking differences between hares and voles was that Sorbusaucuparia was the most utilised by voles but the least preferred by hares. In conclusion, deciduous plant species were generally considerably more palatable to hares and voles than conifers, which is consistent with current theories. Nevertheless, the high variation in palatability among deciduous trees and the difference in preference between hares and voles indicate more complex and species-specific patterns with regard to plant— animal interactions. The latter also suggests that hares and voles differ in their dietary adaptations and have different dietary constrains.  相似文献

Voles use runways, paths, and trails that may also be used by rabbits and mink. These shared areas could contain the scent marks of conspecifics and heterospecifics. Thus, it is likely that the scent marks of heterospecifics may overlap or be overlapped by those of voles, forming over‐marks. Much is known about how voles respond to over‐marks of two different conspecifics. However, we do not know how they would respond to an opposite‐sex conspecific whose scent marks are in an over‐mark with the scent marks of predator or the scent marks of a non‐predator heterospecifics. We tested the hypothesis that meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, differ in their response to the scent mark of the opposite‐sex conspecific if the scent mark was overlapped by that of a mink, a vole predator, or rabbit, a vole non‐predator. We found that female but not male voles showed a preference for the scent marks of the opposite‐sex conspecifics that were part of the mink‐vole over‐mark when compared to those of opposite‐sex conspecifics that were not part of the over‐mark. This preference by female voles was independent of whether the male vole was the top‐scent donor or bottom‐scent donor of the over‐mark. Male and female voles showed no preference between the scent marks of the opposite‐sex conspecifics whose marks were part of or not part of the rabbit‐vole over‐mark. Sex differences in the manner that meadow voles respond to rabbit‐vole and mink‐vole over‐marks are discussed.  相似文献

An optimal foraging model was used to predict prey selection based on both energy maximization and number maximization strategies. The influence of chemical cues and relative abundance on rainbow trout diet selection was examined under laboratory conditions.
In most fish, diet composition was strongly influenced by chemical cues. No fish followed an energy maximization strategy, and selection of prey based on taste persisted despite large caloric penalties associated with these choices. In the absence of chemical cues, diet composition was based on relative abundance of prey (a number maximization strategy). Within the feasible constraints of the optimal foraging model lie a large number of possible diet combinations which would provide sufficient energy for growth and reproduction. This provides a wide scope for feeding flexibility. Response to prey chemical cues may be the basis for observations of individual diet variability in trout.  相似文献

The response to signals, including scent marks, from opposite-sex conspecifics can be affected by the nutritional state of both the sender and receiver of these signals. Protein content of the diet affects how meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) respond to single scent marks, but it is unknown how it affects an individual’s response to the overlapping scent marks of two donors (an over-mark). In experiment 1, we tested the hypothesis that protein content of the diet affects the amount of time voles spend investigating the marks of the top- and bottom-scent donors of an over-mark. Males and females fed a 22% protein diet spent more time investigating the scent mark of the top-scent donor than that of the bottom-scent donor; voles fed 9% and 13% protein diets spent similar amounts of time investigating the top- and bottom-scent donors. In experiment 2, we tested the hypothesis that protein content of the diet of the top- and bottom-scent donors affects the amount of time conspecifics spend investigating their scent marks. Female voles spent more time investigating the mark of the top-scent male than that of the bottom-scent male, independent of the differences in protein content of the diets of the top- and bottom-scent donors. Male voles, however, spent more time investigating the top-scent female when she was fed a diet higher in protein content than that of the bottom-scent female. Our results are discussed within the context of the natural history of voles.  相似文献

Floral visual and olfactory cues guide the insect visitors to the source of reward. This work addresses one such interaction between honeybee Apis cerana and a garden climber Jacquemontia pentanthos. Field studies have indicated that A. cerana showed preference to J. pentanthos over the other flowering plants during its visits for foraging. The objectives of the work is to understand the role of colour and scent in the attraction of Apis cerana to the host plant. Bioassays performed emphasized the involvement of colour and volatiles for the visits of A. cerana. Petals show high reflectance to ultraviolet light with ultraviolet absorbing regions in the centre which serve as a nectar guide. Gas chromatography linked electroanntenogram detector (GC-EAD) showed antennal response to the floral volatile of J. pentanthos identified as sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene. Behavioural studies have shown similar preference to β- caryophyllene as that of α-humulene. Our studies suggest an interplay of colour and volatiles cues for A. cerana visitation to Jacquemontia flowers and these findings are further supported by behavioural studies on.A. cerana.  相似文献

Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) is an important polyphagous pest, and vector of Tomato spotted wilt virus responsible for sporadic, but devastating epidemics in potato. T. tabaci shows significant preferential differences between potato cultivars that may be important for field resistance. To investigate the role of visual cues in host choice we tested colour preference using two-choice assays. Thrips tabaci showed a significant preference for mid-green over red, blue, and white coloured cards, a preference for both light-green and mid-green over dark-green, and light-green over yellow, but no preferential difference between mid-green and yellow, and between light-green and mid-green. Analysis of the spectral reflectance of potato cultivars differing in thrips preference, revealed significant differences within the 400–700 nm wavelengths. In most cases cultivars preferred by T. tabaci had lighter green foliage and higher reflectance at 552 nm, and thus colour preference may be important for host selection. Oviposition choice of T. tabaci for potato cultivars was determined from counts of larvae and unhatched eggs from leaf disks under choice and no-choice conditions. In contrast to the colour choice experiments, onion thrips showed oviposition preference for cultivars with darker green foliage and lower reflectance at 552 nm.  相似文献

Food availability affects whether mammals communicate their interest in interacting with opposite‐sex conspecifics. This study examined the responses of voles to over‐marks, and factors that influence the formation and maintenance of a preference for the top‐scent in an over‐mark. Specifically, we investigated how food deprivation affected the amount of time male and female voles exposed to an over‐mark, later responded to the marks of the top‐ and bottom‐scent donors when subsequently presented with the two scents side by side. Males and females that were not food deprived and males that were food deprived 6 h before exposure to an over‐mark later maintained a preference for the donor of the top‐scent mark compared with the donor of the bottom‐scent mark of the over‐mark. Females that were food deprived for 6 h before or after exposure of the over‐mark and males food deprived 6 h after the exposure to the over‐mark showed no preference for the top‐scent mark donor. Re‐feeding females that were food deprived for 6 h before exposure to an over‐mark was sufficient to restore their preference for the mark of the top‐scent male over that of the bottom‐scent male. The different responses of food‐deprived male and female voles to over‐marks of opposite‐sex conspecifics may be associated with differences in their tactics for interacting with potential mates and the higher energetic costs of reproduction in female voles than in male voles.  相似文献
