Determinants of behavioral response with ozone exposure   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Three separate experiments were performed to evaluate how the topography of a behavioral response and its consequences influence the behavioral effects produced by ozone (O3) exposure. The first experiment measured the responding of food-deprived rats working to obtain intermittent delivery of small pellets of food by completing an active response, wheel running. Low O3 concentrations (0.12 ppm) reduced the frequency of running responses maintained by this fixed-interval 10-min schedule of food delivery. The second experiment examined the effects of O2 on food-deprived rats performing a response (nose poking) that required minimal physical effort to produce deliveries of food pellets. Rats in this situation began to show reductions in responding at 0.5 ppm O3. A third experiment showed that responses requiring minimal physical effort, such as lever pressing, can be a sensitive index of O3 exposure if the response provides access to wheel running. We concluded that increased physical activity during exposure appeared to be an important variable in determining sensitivity to O3 exposure.  相似文献

Subterranean termites construct complex tunnel networks for foraging. During travel in the tunnels, termites often encounter one another when passing in opposite directions. Such encounters are likely to affect the “movement efficiency,” which is the time required for a termite to travel a certain distance in a tunnel. In this study, we explored how individual–individual encounters affect movement efficiency in tunnels by measuring the time (τ) taken by two termites to pass one another in tunnels of different curvatures. Artificial tunnels of 5 cm in length and variable widths (W) of 2, 3, or 4 mm were made. Tunnel distance (D) was 2, 3, 4, or 5 cm. When D had a higher value, curvature was lower. When W = 2, τ was significantly shorter in the tunnel with D = 5 than in tunnels of D = 2, 3, or 4, whereas τ was statistically the same for D = 2, 3 and 4. When W = 3, τ was shorter in the tunnel with D = 5 than for D = 3 and 4, while τ was longer in the tunnel with D = 2 than for D = 3 and 4. When W = 4, τ was longer in the tunnels with D = 2 and 3 than for D = 4 and 5. Based on these observations, 3 types of termite behavior were identified: biased walking, backward walking, and zigzag walking. We considered these results in relation to foraging efficiency.  相似文献

Nicotine has been shown to increase responding maintained by turning off a houselight. To examine whether this effect extends to other primary reinforcing visual stimuli, the present study assessed whether nicotine would increase responding maintained by the illumination, and not just the darkening, of a visual stimulus. One group of rats (n = 4) was initially trained to press two levers, using food as a consequence, while a separate group of rats (n = 4) was initially trained to press one lever. After training, all rats pressed an active lever to turn on or turn off a houselight for 10 s, while presses on an inactive lever had no programmed consequences. A third group of rats (n = 4) were never trained to press either of the two levers and did not experience any programmed consequences for pressing. Although nicotine slightly increased lever pressing on both levers in the third group, nicotine resulted in much greater increases in responding maintained by the visual stimuli in the first two groups. Nicotine selectively increased responding maintained by visual stimuli, regardless of which levers were originally trained and regardless of whether those stimuli consisted of turning on or turning off a houselight, suggesting that nicotine enhances the value of primary reinforcing visual stimuli.  相似文献

The feeding habits of Farfantepenaeus paulensis under pen culture in the Patos Lagoon estuary (Brazil) were studied. A total of 1074 shrimp had their stomach contents analyzed. Samples were taken bi-hourly over a 24 h period at about 10 day intervals during 2 months. F. paulensis did not exhibit strict feeding periodicity (except at D21-22 and D32-33). Thus, the offering of feed pellets during daylight is recommended but the rates of feeding must be further investigated. F. paulensis showed an omnivorous feeding behavior. Despite daily supply of feed pellets, natural food comprised the major part of the shrimp stomach contents. Among prey organisms, polychaetes and tanaids were the main groups recorded. Consumption of detritus and plant material decreased as shrimp grew. Intake of feed pellets increased significantly in the second month of culture (i.e. 5 g mean shrimp weight), thus it might be possible to reduce the initial input of commercial feed.  相似文献

In two experiments, hungry rats, Rattus norvegicus, were present in one side of an operant chamber while a conspecific demonstrator in the adjacent compartment moved a single lever either up or down for a food reward. During a subsequent test session, in which these rats were allowed access to the lever for the first time, all responses were rewarded regardless of their direction. In experiment 1, rats that were prevented from observing the direction of lever movement by means of a screen showed a reliable demonstrator-consistent response bias, while rats that had observed the direction of lever movement and in addition had access to any odour cues deposited on the lever did not. In experiment 2, each rat observed another rat (the ‘viewed’ demonstrator) moving a lever either up or down. They were then transferred into the test compartment of a different operant chamber in which another rat (the ‘box’ demonstrator) had moved the lever in the same direction as the viewed demonstrator or in the opposite direction. These observer rats showed a reliable preference for their box demonstrator's direction, but responded in the opposite direction to their viewed demonstrator. Taken together, the results of these experiments suggest that directional responding by rats in a vertical movement two-action test is influenced by demonstrator-deposited odour cues in addition to visual experience of a demonstrator's behaviour. Furthermore, while odour-mediated local enhancement gave rise to demonstrator-consistent responding, visual observation of a conspecific appeared to have the reverse effect. Incorporating ecological processes and animal behaviour into Species Distribution Models (SDMs) is difficult. In species with a central resting or breeding place, there can be conflict between the environmental requirements of the ‘central place’ and foraging habitat. We apply a multi-scale SDM to examine habitat trade-offs between the central place, roost sites, and foraging habitat in Myotis nattereri. We validate these derived associations using habitat selection from behavioural observations of radio-tracked bats. A Generalised Linear Model (GLM) of roost occurrence using land cover variables with mixed spatial scales indicated roost occurrence was positively associated with woodland on a fine scale and pasture on a broad scale. Habitat selection of radio-tracked bats mirrored the SDM with bats selecting for woodland in the immediate vicinity of individual roosts but avoiding this habitat in foraging areas, whilst pasture was significantly positively selected for in foraging areas. Using habitat selection derived from radio-tracking enables a multi-scale SDM to be interpreted in a behavioural context. We suggest that the multi-scale SDM of M. nattereri describes a trade-off between the central place and foraging habitat. Multi-scale methods provide a greater understanding of the ecological processes which determine where species occur and allow integration of behavioural processes into SDMs. The findings have implications when assessing the resource use of a species at a single point in time. Doing so could lead to misinterpretation of habitat requirements as these can change within a short time period depending on specific behaviour, particularly if detectability changes depending on behaviour.  相似文献

Using a laboratory experiment, we tested the hypothesis that faecal inspection and squashing behaviours by female red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, function in a context other than mate assessment, in this case foraging. Because only female P. cinereus squash faecal pellets, other studies have hypothesized that the faecal squashing is a mate assessment behaviour. During the courtship season, we exposed gravid female P. cinereus maintained on a ‘high-quality’ or ‘low-quality’ diet, to the faecal pellets of male and female conspecifics fed ‘high-quality’ diets. Female diet had no effect on activity level, and, overall, P. cinereus showed greater interest in male-marked substrates than female-marked substrates. However, female diet had a large effect on faecal inspection and squashing behaviours, and females showed similar inspection and squashing rates towards both male and female faecal pellets. These results suggest that faecal squashing does not function primarily in mate assessment, but rather as a means for female P. cinereus to gain information about prey availability. We propose that male P. cinereus have evolved to exploit female faecal inspection and squashing behaviours (sensory exploitation) to attract foraging females into areas to increase male encounter rates with females.  相似文献

Orians & Pearson (1979) proposed a series of models of optimal central place foraging. I tested their model for single-prey loading species (those that carry items singly) with a natural population of white-fronted bee-eaters (Merops bullockoides) in Kenya. These insectivorous birds breed in colonies but defend nearby foraging territories from which they gather food for their nestlings. Qualitatively, two predictions of the model were upheld: as travel time increased, birds carried larger insects to their nests and spent longer periods of time foraging. Also, as distance increased, birds were increasingly selective of which insects they ate versus carried to the colony. Quantitative comparisons were also made using observed travel times and rates of insect capture. As distance increased, (1) the observed sizes of insects carried approached the values predicted by the Orians-Pearson model, (2) observed foraging times diverged from the predicted values, and (3) birds spent more time foraging between round trips in a relatively unprofitable area near the colony. These results are examined in light of the theory of central place foraging.  相似文献

The fate of diazotrophic nitrogen (ND) fixed by planktonic cyanobacteria in pelagic food webs remains unresolved, particularly for toxic cyanophytes that are selectively avoided by most herbivorous zooplankton. Current theory suggests that ND fixed during cyanobacterial blooms can enter planktonic food webs contemporaneously with peak bloom biomass via direct grazing of zooplankton on cyanobacteria or via the uptake of bioavailable ND (exuded from viable cyanobacterial cells) by palatable phytoplankton or microbial consortia. Alternatively, ND can enter planktonic food webs post-bloom following the remineralization of bloom detritus. Although the relative contribution of these processes to planktonic nutrient cycles is unknown, we hypothesized that assimilation of bioavailable ND (e.g., nitrate, ammonium) by palatable phytoplankton and subsequent grazing by zooplankton (either during or after the cyanobacterial bloom) would be the primary pathway by which ND was incorporated into the planktonic food web. Instead, in situ stable isotope measurements and grazing experiments clearly documented that the assimilation of ND by zooplankton outpaced assimilation by palatable phytoplankton during a bloom of toxic Nodularia spumigena Mertens. We identified two distinct temporal phases in the trophic transfer of ND from N. spumigena to the plankton community. The first phase was a highly dynamic transfer of ND to zooplankton with rates that covaried with bloom biomass while bypassing other phytoplankton taxa; a trophic transfer that we infer was routed through bloom-associated bacteria. The second phase was a slowly accelerating assimilation of the dissolved-ND pool by phytoplankton that was decoupled from contemporaneous variability in N. spumigena concentrations. These findings provide empirical evidence that ND can be assimilated and transferred rapidly throughout natural plankton communities and yield insights into the specific processes underlying the propagation of ND through pelagic food webs.  相似文献

Limits on the exposure to high-peak-power, short-duration microwave pulses have only recently been adopted. Additional data, however, are needed to understand the effects that may be produced by exposure to high-peak-power pulsed microwaves. Four male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were trained on an operant task for food pellet reward to investigate the behavioral effects of very high-peak-power 5.62 GHz microwaves. The operant task required monkeys to pull one plastic lever on a variable interval schedule (VI-25 s) and then respond to color signals and pull a second lever to obtain food. The monkeys were conditioned to perform a color discrimination task using one of three colors displayed by a fiber-optic cable. A red signal was the discriminative stimulus for responding on the first lever. A response on the second lever when a green signal was presented (1 s duration) delivered a food pellet. If a response on the second lever was made in the presence of a white signal, a 30-s timeout occurred. While performing the behavioral task, the monkeys were exposed to microwave pulses produced by either a military radar (FPS-26A) operating at 5.62 GHz or the same radar coupled to a Stanford linear energy doubler (SLED) pulse-forming device (ITT-2972) that enhanced peak power by a factor of nine by adding a high power pulse to the radar pulse. The effects of both types of pulses were compared to sham exposure. Peak field power densities tested were 518, 1270, and 2520 W/cm2 for SLED pulses and 56, 128, and 277 W/cm2 for the radar pulses. The microwave pulses (radar or SLED) were delivered at 100 pps (2.8 μs radar pulse duration, ≈ 50 ns SLED pulse duration) for 20 min and produced averaged whole-body SARs of 2,4, or 6 W/kg. Compared to sham exposures, significant alterations of lever responding, reaction time, and earned food pellets occurred during microwave exposure at 4 and 6 W/kg but not 2 W/kg.     The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that foraging sand fiddler crabs. Uca pugilator (Bosc), move through the habitat in response to low substratum food levels even though these movements may take the crabs considerable distances from the safety of the burrow area. Chl a and ATP concentrations were used as measures of food density in foraged and unforaged substratum. Field and laboratory feeding experiments showed that crab foraging intensity in a habitat patch was directly correlated with food density in the patch either in the presence or absence of alternative food patches. Other experiments showed that sand fiddlers can respond to differences in food level on a scale of millimeters and do this by probing the substratum with minor chelae. Food levels in aggregations of non-ingested particles harvested by sand fiddlers, feeding pellets, correspond to low foraging intensities predicted from foraging experiments and crabs exhibit low foraging intensities on substratum patches derived from feeding pellets. Substratum food levels in two distinct areas corresponded to high predicted foraging intensities and there was no consistent trend in the level of food in the burrow vs. the nonburrow microhabitats. These results suggest that the movements of foraging sand fiddlers are to some extent controlled by the reduction in substratum food levels due to feeding during a single foraging episode. Sand fiddlers can extract over 70% of the food from harvested substratum over a broad range of substratum food densities but harvest only 42% of the available substratum.  相似文献

    Secondary sexual traits are often assumed to increase reproductive success but can also carry costs for males bearing them. Here, we investigate potential foraging costs of foreleg ornamentation in wolf spiders in the genus Schizocosa. Given that the forelegs are involved in securing prey items and that ornaments may also inhibit general mobility, we hypothesized that the presence of ornamentation inhibits foraging success. To test this, we first took an ontogenetic approach. We conducted an experiment to examine variation in foraging behavior before and after ornament development in a population of Schizocosa that exhibits two male phentoypes: (a) brush-legged males that develop large brushes of hairs on their forelegs upon maturation and (b) non-ornamented males that lack ornamentation. When comparing penultimate versus mature foraging behavior between these two phenotypes, we predicted (i) reduced foraging intensity upon maturation for males of both groups (due to increased mate-searching behavior) and (ii) a greater decrease in foraging efficiency in brush-legged versus non-ornamented males (due to costs of ornamentation). As expected, we found that when exposed to prey, all males exhibited greater latencies to attack as matures than as penultimates, but unexpectedly, they differed in their patterns of attack frequency; brush-legged males decreased the number of attacks upon maturation while non-ornamented males increased. We found no support for our second prediction: neither male phenotype exhibited a change in foraging success upon maturation. Given that foraging behavior differed between ontogenetic stages, making it difficult to isolate the effects of ornamentation per se, we conducted a second experiment with a pure brush-legged population (S. ocreata) to directly test the influence of foreleg brushes on foraging behavior. We compared foraging behavior between mature males with brushes present versus mature males with brushes artificially removed and found no effect of the presence/absence of brushes on foraging success. In summary, using both ontogenetic and ornament manipulation approaches, we found no support for the hypothesis that ornamentation influences foraging success; however, we do document phenotype-dependent foraging behavior.  相似文献

    Pigeons (Columba livia) responding on an operant, conditioning analogue to foraging could either accept or reject a variable-interval 20-s schedule which always led to food or a variable-interval 5-s schedule which led to food on only a percentage of trials. The probability of accepting the certain alternative increased as the percentage of food trials for the uncertain alternative decreased. The probability of accepting the uncertain alternative increased with the percentage of food trials for this alternative. Subjects receiving all of their food in the experiment (‘closed economy’) and those requiring supplementation (‘open economy’) preferred whichever alternative provided the higher overall mean rate of reinforcement.  相似文献

    There is good evidence that in many situations, animals prefer to work for food even when identical food is freely available. This phenomenon is called ‘learned industriousness’ or ‘contrafreeloading’ and has been found in several species. This study shows that wild rats will also work hard for contaminated food that they associate with sickness and subsequently reject, even when wholesome food is continuously available at no extra cost. Seven wild rats (Rattus novegicus) lived for 4 wk in cages containing two operant levers and associated pellet dispensers. The rats earned all their food by lever pressing for 45-mg food pellets on a variable-interval 10 s (VI10s) schedule in each dispenser. After 1 wk, pellets containing a sub-lethal dose of an acute rodenticide were available for 12 h (the test period) from the preferred dispenser, before being replaced by normal food pellets. This procedure was repeated 1 wk and 4 wk later. The number of lever presses, pellets delivered, and pellets consumed at each dispenser were recorded for 12 h prior to the test period, during the 12-h test period, and 12 h after the test period. The rats quickly learned to shift their feeding preference during the test period away from the dispenser that provided the rodenticide pellets. However, during the second half of the test period, lever pressing at this dispenser increased, even though the pellets thereby obtained were still rejected. This divergence between the lever pressing rate and the pellet consumption rate increased over the three trials. This ‘learned-industriousness’ behaviour is not easily explained by the self-reinforcing hypothesis, by the obligate species-specific response hypothesis, or as some artefact of the operant situation. It is suggested that the lever pressing towards the end of the trial, for pellets that were rejected, enabled the animals to gather information about a rare, but very important, event, namely, the presence of dangerous food at a previously preferred and normally safe feeding site. The data lend support to the information-primacy theory of learned industriousness.  相似文献

    This paper describes a novel method for studying the bio-behavioral basis of addiction to food. This method combines the surgical component of taste reactivity with the behavioral aspects of operant self-administration of drugs. Under very brief general anaesthesia, rats are implanted with an intraoral (IO) cannula that allows delivery of test solutions directly in the oral cavity. Animals are then tested in operant self-administration chambers whereby they can press a lever to receive IO infusions of test solutions. IO self-administration has several advantages over experimental procedures that involve drinking a solution from a spout or operant responding for solid pellets or solutions delivered in a receptacle. Here, we show that IO self-administration can be employed to study self-administration of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Rats were first tested for self-administration on a progressive ratio (PR) schedule, which assesses the maximum amount of operant behavior that will be emitted for different concentrations of HFCS (i.e. 8%, 25%, and 50%). Following this test, rats self-administered these concentrations on a continuous schedule of reinforcement (i.e. one infusion for each lever press) for 10 consecutive days (1 session/day; each lasting 3 hr), and then they were retested on the PR schedule. On the continuous reinforcement schedule, rats took fewer infusions of higher concentrations, although the lowest concentration of HFCS (8%) maintained more variable self-administration. Furthermore, the PR tests revealed that 8% had lower reinforcing value than 25% and 50%. These results indicate that IO self-administration can be employed to study acquisition and maintenance of responding for sweet solutions. The sensitivity of the operant response to differences in concentration and schedule of reinforcement makes IO self-administration an ideal procedure to investigate the neurobiology of voluntary intake of sweets.  相似文献

    Capsule The gulls adjust their diet composition and diversity according to refuse dump accessibility.

    Aims To examine the influence of the accessibility of open-air refuse dumps on the pre-laying diet of the adult Yellow-legged Gull.

    Methods We studied six colonies settled on six rocky islands off the southeastern coast of France. A comparative study of the diet of breeding adults from the six colonies was made through pellet analysis (a total of 848 pellets). We determined the main foraging habitat used (refuse dumps, terrestrial habitats, marine habitat) and the number of foraging habitats used simultaneously (one, two or three), from which we deduced the mean diet diversity.

    Results Refuse dumps were consistently the main foraging habitat (evidence in 53–74% of pellets) for the six colonies, even when refuse dump accessibility was low. The majority of pellets contained materials from two simultaneous foraging habitats (evidence in 50–64% of pellets). We demonstrated the influence of a gradient of refuse dump accessibility in terms of adjustment of the pre-laying adult's diet. Indeed, high refuse dump accessibility leads to a poorly diversified diet dominated by refuse. In contrast, when refuse dump accessibility is low, Yellow-legged Gulls broaden their trophic niche, with an increased exploitation of alternative foraging habitats, such as terrestrial habitats.

    Conclusion These results show the species' opportunistic feeding and high adaptability, two parameters which need to be known to foresee the consequences on population dynamics, feeding and predatory behaviour of a sudden and severe food shortage, for example due to closure of open-air refuse dumps.  相似文献

    Background and Aims

    Flower morphology and inflorescence architecture affect pollinator foraging behaviour and thereby influence the process of pollination and the reproductive success of plants. This study explored possible ecological functions of the lever-like stamens and the floral design in Salvia cyclostegia.

    Methods

    Flower construction was experimentally manipulated by removing either the lower lever arms or the upper fertile thecae of the two stamens from a flower. The two types of manipulated individuals were intermixed with the control ones and randomly distributed in the population.

    Key Results

    Removing the sterile lower lever arms significantly reduced handling time per flower of the main pollinator, Bombus personatus. Interestingly, this manipulation did not increase the number of flowers probed per plant visit, but instead reduced it, i.e. shortened the visit sequence of the bumble-bees. Both loss of staminal lever function by removing lower lever arms and exclusion of self pollen by removing upper fertile thecae significantly reduced seed set per flower and seed set per plant. Both the manipulations interacted significantly with inflorescence size for the effect on female reproductive output.

    Conclusions

    Though the intact flowers demand a long handling time for pollinators, the reversible staminal lever is of advantage by promoting dispersal of pollen and thus the male function. The particular floral design in S. cyclostegia contributes to the floral constancy of B. personatus bumble-bees, with the lower lever arms acting as an optical cue for foraging cognition.  相似文献

    An ingestion experiment was carried out in Rı́a de Pontevedra (Spain) with the copepod Temora longicornis in order to determine ingestion rates of the DSP toxin-producers, Dinophysis spp. (Dinophyceae), and the excretion rate of Dinophysis spp. cells within the faecal pellets. Ingestion rate was a function of dinoflagellate abundance and did not vary with either the amount, or the composition of the co-occurring phytoplankton species in the food suspension. Faecal pellet production increased at higher food concentrations. Intact Dinophysis spp. cells representing 34.4% of the total Dinophysis cells ingested by the copepods were found within the pellets. T. longicornis was the only dominant copepod species in the area that fed on Dinophysis spp., thus the pellets produced by T. longicornis were the main source of copepod “toxic” pellets in the media during blooms of Dinophysis spp. These “toxic” pellets might contribute to the maintenance of the toxic algal blooms, if the cells inside the pellets remain viable, can spread the potential toxicity of the toxic dinoflagellates throughout the pelagic food web due to coprophagy, and/or be an important toxic vector into the benthic food web. However, during a Dinophysis spp. bloom, the percentage of cells excreted daily within the pellets was lower than 1% of the total dinoflagellate population and, moreover, copepod faecal pellets represent a small fraction of the sinking material in this area. Although it was not possible to measure the amount of toxins in the pellets, we concluded that copepod faecal pellets do not have an important role in the transport of DSP toxins through the food web in this area.  相似文献

    Subterranean termites build extensive underground galleries consisting of elaborate tunnels and channels to forage food resources. Diverse soil conditions surrounding the tunnels, such as soil density, may cause irregularities in the size and shape of the tunnels, and termites are likely to encounter a number of tunnel irregularities while traveling. Considering the tunnel length, how termites respond to an irregularity is likely to affect their movement efficiency, and this in turn is directly correlated to their foraging efficiency. To understand the response of termites, we designed an artificial linear tunnel with rectangular irregularities in a 2-D arena. The tunnel widths, W, were 3 and 4?mm. The rectangular irregularities were 2?mm in width and of varying heights H (2, 1, 0, ?1, and ?2?mm). The positive and negative sign of H represents a convex and concave structure, respectively. We systematically observed the movement of termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, at the irregularity and quantified the time needed, τ, for a termite to pass the irregularity. The time τ was shorter for (W, H)?=?(3, 0) and (3, ?1) than for (W, H)?=?(3, 1), (3, 2), and (3, ?2). The time τ was longer for (W, H)?=?(4, ?1), and (4, ?2), than for (W, H)?=?(4, 0), (4, 1) and (4, 2). Four types of behaviors explained the response to the irregularity. The implications of these findings are briefly discussed in relation to termite foraging efficiency.  相似文献

    The overall volumetric coefficient of heat transfer (Ua) of a shaking flask was measured under various shaking conditions using three types of flask. Ua was significantly affected by flask weight (WF), which could be attributed to the thickness of the flask wall, the rotational speed of the shaker (N), wind velocity (VW), and the liquid volume in the flask (VL). The limiting step of heat transfer seemed to be the heat radiation process from the surface of the flask to the surroundings. To predict the value of Ua, the following empirical equations were obtained for each type of flask by the least squares method:
