A retrospective study was undertaken on 70 French populations of Lymnaea truncatula experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica to determine whether or not susceptibility of snails to infection influenced redial and cercarial production. Results were compared with those obtained from two control populations, known for prevalences higher than 60% when experimentally infected with F. hepatica. In the 70 other populations examined, the prevalences ranged from 2 to 75%. In 55 of these populations, where the prevalence was more than 20%, a high proportion (50.1-56.8%) of snails died after cercarial shedding, whereas in the other groups (non-shedding snails with the most differentiated larvae being free cercariae, rediae containing cercariae, immature rediae, or sporocysts, respectively), snail death was significantly less. In 11 populations, where the prevalence values were 5-19%, only 14% of snails died after cercarial shedding, whereas snails with free cercariae, rediae with cercariae, or immature rediae showed significant increases in snail mortality. In the remaining four snail populations, with prevalences of less than 5%, the most differentiated larval forms were only immature rediae and/or sporocysts. Overall, the number of rediae containing cercariae significantly decreased with decreasing prevalence values. The low prevalence of experimental infection in several populations of snails might be explained by the occurrence of natural infections with miracidia originating from a mammalian host other than cattle, and/or by genetic variability in the susceptibility of snails to infection.  相似文献

Bimiracidial infections of Lymnaea truncatula with three isolates of Fasciola gigantica, originating from China, Egypt and Madagascar, were carried out to determine the effect of geographic origin of the parasite on the larval productivity of redial generations. The prevalences of experimental infections in snails exposed to strains from Madagascar, China and Egypt were 20.8%, 60.0% and 80.0%, respectively. At day 49 post-exposure (p.e.), the total number of free rediae in snails infected with the Egyptian isolate was significantly higher than that recorded in the Madagascan group. On the other hand, at day 49 p.e., the majority of cercariae in the Chinese and Egyptian groups were produced by R2a rediae (70.6% and 66.6% of cercariae produced by all live rediae), while, in the Madagascan group, the cercariae were produced mainly by the first redial generation. Snails infected with the Egyptian isolate of miracidia developed more live rediae and, consequently, could produce a higher number of cercariae. As a result, L. truncatula snails were highly adapted to infections with the Egyptian and Chinese isolates of F. gigantica.  相似文献

Bimiracidial infections of Galba truncatula with Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the effect of food quality on the frequency of 1- and 2-sporocyst infections, to analyse its impact on the developmental patterns (normal, or abnormal) of redial generations, and to verify its consequences on cercarial production. These investigations were performed in snails reared at 20 degrees C and provided with cos lettuce and commercial fish food (Tetraphyll) as a food source until their death. Double-sporocyst infections with normal development of redial generations were recorded in 43.9% of infected snails (out of 296). Single-sporocyst infections were noted in the other snails, with normal development of generations in 53.7% and abnormal development (the first mother redia early degenerated) in 2.4%. Four successive redial generations were found in long-surviving snails (more than 90 days). In both 1- and 2-sporocyst infections, showing normal development of generations, the daughter rediae, which exited from the first mother redia (R2a rediae), constituted the greater group of free rediae and produced the highest percentages of cercariae (46.2-48.2%). However, the development of these rediae inside the snail body was slower in 2-sporocyst infections than in 1-sporocyst infections. The numbers of rediae noted in subsequent generations (R2b/R3a and R3b/R4a rediae) were similar, whatever the number of full-grown sporocysts. The number of shed cercariae recorded in the 1- and 2-sporocyst infections did not significantly differ. When long-surviving snails died, 19.8-20.7% of cercariae produced by free rediae (essentially by R2b/R3a and R3b/R4a rediae) were still present in their bodies. The increased frequency of 2-sporocyst infections demonstrated that food quality had a significant effect on the redial burden of F. hepatica developing inside G. truncatula.  相似文献

Single-miracidium infections of Lymnaea truncatula with Paramphistomum daubneyi or with Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions to count free rediae, their germinal embryos, and to determine the cercarial productivity of each redial generation. In snails infected by P. daubneyi, the cercariae were produced by the first (8.7 cercariae per redia) and second (8.9 per redia) generations. At day 63 post-exposure, they corresponded, respectively, to 53.9% and 46.1% of cercariae produced by all rediae. In snails infected by F. hepatica, the majority of cercariae were produced by the R2a group (18.2 cercariae per redia) and corresponded to 66.0% of cercariae produced all rediae. The cercariae produced by the other redial groups were more limited in number: 17.5 per redia in the R1b group (28.7%) and 2.0 per redia in the R2b/R3a group (5.3%). Cercarial productivity of P. daubneyi until day 63 post-exposure was more limited in number than that of F. hepatica: a total of 145 cercariae per snail versus 427 per snail.  相似文献

The development of Echinostoma cinetorchis in several snail species reared in laboratory aquaria was observed. The eggs from adult flukes collected from the intestine of rats were cultivated to miracidia, and exposed to Hippeutis sp. snails. Observations were made for cercarial shedding from the exposed snails. The cercariae shed from the snails were again exposed to several species of fresh water snails in order to observe metacercarial formation in the snails and their infectivity to final hosts. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Twenty miracidia were exposed to each snail of Hippeutis sp. About 58.3% of the above snails (7 out of 12) were dead before shedding the cercariae, and the remainder shed the cercariae for a period of 7 to 9 days before death. 2. Cercarial shedding from the infected snails started from the 25th day after the exposure to miracidia, and the total number of cercariae shed per snail was 684 in average (range; 482-904). 3. The size of rediae developed in the infected Hippeutis sp. snails was 1,242 x 214 microns in average, and the number of rediae per snail was 350 in average (range; 120-510). 4. About 40 to 50 cercariae shed from the Hippeutis sp. snails were each exposed to several species of snails reared in the laboratory. The metacercarial formation was confirmed by dissecting the infected snails, 12 to 16 days after the infection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Experimental infections of 1-mm high snails using three populations of Lymnaea (L. glabra, L. ovata and L. truncatula) and a cattle strain of Fasciola hepatica miracidia were carried out under laboratory conditions to determine if the snail species had an effect on the number of free rediae, their growth, and cercarial productivity in relation to each redial category (R1a, R1b, R2a, or R2b/R3a). The total number of rediae ranged from 6.4 to 7.5 per snail. The mean body length of rediae varied from 1-1.2 mm (R1a) to 0.3-0.4 mm (R2b/R3a). The width of the intrapharyngeal lumen also varied from 26.0-38.8 microm to 3.0-4.2 microm, respectively. The redial category had a significant effect on both measurements, whereas snail species only had a significant influence on body length. The mean number of cercariae produced by all living rediae at day 49 post-exposure ranged from 63.0 in L. glabra to 87.2 in L. truncatula. In L. ovata and L. truncatula, 55.8% and 58.6% of cercariae, respectively, were produced by R2a rediae, whereas 53.9% of cercariae in L. glabra were formed by the R1b rediae. When young snails were infected with F. hepatica, the species of snail had an effect on the number of living rediae, their length and their cercarial productivity.  相似文献

Experimental infections of Galba truncatula with 4 isolates of Fasciola hepatica miracidia differing by their mammalian origin (cattle, nutrias, rabbits, or sheep) were carried out to determine if parasite origin had an effect on the number of free rediae, their growth, and their larval productivity in each redia category. The mammalian origin of miracidia had a significant influence on the numbers of free rediae (they were higher in cattle-group snails) and the lengths of rediae (they were lower in rabbit groups). The redia category had also a significant effect on body and pharyngeal measurements. In all groups, the majority of cercariae (55.8-63.2%) were produced by the daughter rediae (R2a rediae) originating from the first mother redia. Compared with the other groups, the mean number of cercariae at day 49 postexposure was twice as high in cattle groups. In contrast, the mean number of daughter rediae produced by each second-appearing mother redia or each R2a redia was higher in the nutria, rabbit, and sheep groups. The mammalian origin of F. hepatica miracidia had an effect on the number of live rediae, their length, and their redial and cercarial productivity.  相似文献

During co-infection of Biomphalaria glabrata with Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma liei, S. mansoni cercariae released before the complete resorption of S. mansoni sporocysts show a very strong decrease of their infectivity in mice. Under conditions of high interspecific competition (i.e. when the snails are infected by E. liei 8 days after infection by S. mansoni), the mean overall worm return is five times lower than that of the control experiment. A marked decrease of the infectivity of cercariae is also noted when snails, infected exclusively with either sporocysts of S. mansoni or rediae of E. liei, are associated in the same tank.  相似文献

The distribution of Schistosoma haematobium infections in a population of Bulinus globosus snails collected from a field site in Zimbabwe is described. Cercariae of both sexes emerged from a proportion of patent infected snails, as was demonstrated by the detection of paired schistosomes in hamsters each exposed to cercariae from a single snail. These snails must have been infected by two or more miracidia. Analysis showed that the proportion of mixed-sex infections was higher than expected if infections were distributed at random among snails. An index of overdispersion was calculated. Overdispersion of infections results from heterogeneities in the exposure and/or susceptibility of snails to infection. The implications for the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis haematobium are discussed.  相似文献

The development of Fasciola hepatica from two species of definitive hosts, i.e. cattle (Bos taurus) and a marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) in the snail Lymnaea columella was determined based on the production of rediae and cercariae and snail survival rate. More rediae and cercariae at 60-74 days post-infection were produced by snails infected by cattle-derived miracidia (cattle group) than by those infected by marmoset-derived miracidia (marmoset group). Among the L. columella parasitized by the marmoset group, the survival rate and the percentage of positive snails were higher than among those parasitized by the cattle group. Eggs of F. hepatica released in cattle faeces were significantly bigger than those released in marmoset faeces. Miracidia originating from parasites that completed their development in cattle were more efficient in infecting the intermediate host. These results suggest that vertebrate-host origin influences the eggs produced by the parasite and the infection rates in the snail host L. columella.  相似文献

Echinostoma revolutum from Taiwan was studied in lymneid snails at 29 +/- 0.5 degrees C. Given 3-5 miracidia, 95% of Lymnaea ollula and 40% of Lymnaea swinhoei became positive; the prepatent periods were 18 and 25 days, respectively. The following are based on the observations in Lymnaea ollula: The time required for miracidial penetration was about one hour. The sporocysts developed only in the ventricle of the snail but mother rediae developed in the heart and other organs. Mature daughter rediae were not found in the heart cavity. The sporocysts reached the ventricle within 3 days. Mother rediae were released after 6 days and daughter rediae after 8 days. Given 5 miracidia, 1-3 sporocysts reached the heart and 2-20 mother rediae were found per snail. The number of mature daughter rediae was usually 100-200 although more than a thousand may develop in a snail. The sporocysts and mother rediae attained maximal size 9 days postinfection and started degeneration 13 days postinfection. Daughter rediae were largest at the beginning of cercarial emergence and decreased in size thereafter. Simultaneous production of daughter rediae and cercariae by the mother redia was seen only once in this snail mature cercariae were obtained in 10 days postinfection. The cercariae emerged from a small area of mantle collar near the posterior corner of shell aperture. They were negatively phototactic and positively geotactic. An estimation showed that each snail shed about 350 cercariae a day. The cercariae reached the pericardial cavity of snail in one hour via the renal orifice and metacercariae were seen 4-5 hours after exposure. The infectivity of cercariae at various times after shedding, as expressed by cyst recovery rates, were: 51.6%, O-hr old; 76.1%, 2-hr; 68% 4-hr; 32%, 6-hr; 3%, 8 and 10-hr. Cyst recovery rates were not different within the dosage of 50-500 cercariae per snail. Most metacercariae recovered 1-2 days after cercarial exposure were viable; only 5 among 6,533 cysts were dead.  相似文献

Two groups of Biomphalaria glabrata snails primarily infected with Angiostrongylus contonensis were secondarily exposed to infection with Schistosoma mansoni. To investigate any anatagonistic effect of the first infection on a superimposed one and to compare to singly and non-infected snails, a series of experiments was undertaken in which snails were individually exposed, variously, to 1,000 and 2,000 first-stage larvae of A. cantonensis and then to 5 and 10 miracidia of S. mansoni 1 day and 3 weeks later. Snails became infected with S. mansoni in both groups of snails with double infections and shed cercariae after the same incubation period as in the singly infected groups. The number of snails shedding cercariae simultaneously was similar in single and double infection groups during the first two weeks of shedding, after which this number decreased somewhat in doubly infected groups. Snails with double infection showed higher cumulative mortality rates than in snail groups with single infection with either A. cantonensis or S. mansoni. Therefore, initial infection of B. glabrata with A. cantonensis produced no inhibitory or retarding effect on subsequent infection of snails with S. mansoni.  相似文献

The echinostome cercaria,Cercaria patellae Lebour, 1911, which develops in the limpetPatella vulgata (Prosobranchia, Diotocardia, Patellidae), was investigated by light and scanning microscopy. The highest prevalence of limpets with rediae/cercariae occurred on bare rocks on the upper part of the shore. The prevalence was higher in larger snails and in those which had an orange foot-sole. The cercariae penetrated into other gastropods,Aplysia punctata (Opisthobranchia, Cephalaspidea, Aplysiidae),Acanthodoris pilosa (Opisthobranchia, Nudibranchiata, Lamellidorididae) andP. vulgata. No differences in size were found between metacercariae which naturally infected onlyP. vulgata and five-day-old metacercariae from experimental infections. Inin vitro experiments excystation of metacercariae from natural infections took place as a passive process after a double treatment with pepsin and trypsin which caused the dissolution of the cyst wall. After metacercariae from natural infections were fed to one-day-old chickens, the young adults developed. Detailed morphometrical data on rediae, cercariae and metacercariae are compared with previously published measurements of living specimens. Chaetotaxy demonstrated a distinct distribution of tegumental papillae of cercariae, resembling that of the Echinostomatidae or Philophthalmidae. Scanning electron microscopy of adults revealed short, blunt spines anteriorly, while flattened serrated spines occurred on the posterior tegument. Morphometry revealed no major differences to previously published data. Considering all ecological data and comparing the morphological data with those of previous publications by different authors, we conclude thatC. patellae Lebour, 1911, the cercaria in the limpet, is a developmental stage of a digenean in the intestine of the oystercatcherHaematopus ostralegus and should be referred toEchinostephilla patellae (Lebour, 1911) n. comb.  相似文献

Changes in the metabolism and activity of the freshwater snail Semisulcospira libertina infected with larval trematodes were studied experimentally. In snails up to 11 mm in shell width, crawling distance, feeding frequency, and the proportion of individuals located on vertical walls did not differ among snails infected with mature or immature cercariae, or uninfected snails (p > 0.05). In snails larger than 11 mm, individuals infected with mature cercariae tended to feed more frequently during the light period (p = 0.0081), but the distance they crawled and the proportion of individuals located on vertical walls did not differ, regardless of infection (p > 0.05). Infection with mature cercariae significantly increased the oxygen consumption rate (p = 0.016), which was measured only in the large size.  相似文献

Factors that influenced the infracommunity structure of trematodes parasitizing the pulmonate snail Helisoma anceps were studied over a 15-mo period; the guild included 8 species of parasites. Infracommunities were depauperate, with double patent infections observed in only 7 of 1,485 infected snails; a total of 4,899 was examined. Halipegus occidualis-Haematoloechus longiplexus was the most common dual infection. Both species share the same definitive host and, in both cases, eggs are the infective stage for the snail. Switches and losses of infections in individual snails were observed, suggesting the occurrence of dynamic interactions within the guild. A dominance hierarchy was constructed based on field observations and experimental infections. Echinostomatids were dominant; species without rediae in their life cycles were subordinates. Halipegus occidualis (which has rediae) was intermediate in dominance. Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the distribution and abundance of trematode infective stages indicate that not all the snails have the same probability of becoming infected. Habitat structure, behavior of the definitive host, the nature of the infective stages, and snail population dynamics (mortality, recruitment, and size structure) generated spatial and temporal heterogeneity in this system. As a consequence, predictions of the probabilities of interspecific interactions based on an analysis of observed and expected frequencies of multiple infections could be inappropriate unless the potential sources of heterogeneity are considered.  相似文献

Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a significantly lower number of shed cercariae was noted for L. neotropica, while those from G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa did not differ significantly from each other. Dissection of infected snails at day 65 post-exposure at 20 °C (second experiment) found significantly lower burdens of P. daubneyi rediae and cercariae in the bodies of L. neotropica than in those of G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa. Compared to total cercarial production observed in dissected snails, the percentage of cercariae which exited from snails was 75.6% for G. truncatula, 21.6% for L. neotropica, and 91.4% for L. v. ventricosa. This last species seems to be a good candidate for metacercarial production of P. daubneyi.  相似文献

Single and double infections of juvenile Omphiscola glabra (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) with Paramphistomum daubneyi and/or Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the redial burden and cercarial production in snails dissected at day 60 or at day 75 post-exposure (p.e.) in the laboratory at 20 degrees C. The results were compared with those obtained with single-miracidium infections by Fascioloides magna. Compared to F. hepatica, low values were noted at day 75 p.e. for the prevalence of snail infections with P. daubneyi (4.6-8.3% instead of 23.6-25.9%), the total number of free rediae (10.7-17.9 per snail instead of 26.3-34.7), and that of free cercariae (112.8-136.9 per snail instead of 177.8-248.5). Despite a greater number of free rediae at day 75 p.e. (36.2-45.6 per snail), the prevalences of snail infections with F. magna and cercarial production were similar to those noted for F. hepatica. The results concerning F. hepatica and P. daubneyi might partly be explained by a progressive adaptation of O. glabra to sustain the larval development of these digeneans over the years, as this snail is a natural intermediate host of F. hepatica and P. daubneyi in central France since 1995. Compared with the high number of fully-grown rediae of F. magna in O. glabra, cercarial production seemed limited and this might be explained by the presence of high numbers of rediae which reduced the avaibility of nutrients for cercarial differentiation within the snail.  相似文献

Cercaria orospinosa is the only cercaria shed by Melanopsis praemorsa snails in Savanda stream, Turkey. Magnitude of infestation of snails by this cercaria was correlated with size of the snails and strength of the water current. The highest degree of infestation occurred in June, while in winter it was reduced to zero. The cercariae were released from rediae, which were found in the hepatopancreas of the snails.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a larval Echinostoma caproni infection on the neutral lipid composition of the digestive gland-gonad complex (DGG) of Biomphalaria glabrata snails fed hen's egg yolk supplemented with lettuce (Y-L) or lettuce supplemented with Tetramin (L-T). Snails were experimentally infected with the miracidial stage of this echinostome, and their DGGs containing daughter rediae were analyzed for neutral lipids five weeks post-infection by qualitative and quantitative thin-layer chromatography. Light microscopy using Oil Red O (ORO) staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to localize neutral lipids in the rediae. The DGGs of infected snails maintained on the Y-L diet showed a significant increase in free sterols and a significant decrease in triacylglycerols compared to uninfected snails maintained on the Y-L diet. The DGGs of infected snails maintained on the L-T diet showed no significant difference in free sterols or triacylglycerols compared to uninfected snails maintained on the L-T diet. ORO staining and TEM showed the presence of lipid droplets in rediae from snails on the Y-L diet. The significant decrease in triacylglycerols in the DGGs of infected snails maintained on the Y-L diet suggests that triacylglycerols were utilized by the rediae.  相似文献

Rediae of Echinostoma caproni (Egyptian strain) were dissected from Biomphalaria glabrata snails at intervals from 13-34 days post-exposure and co-cultured for up to 51 days with cells of the B. glabrata embryonic (Bge) cell line. Rediae readily ingested Bge cells and survived longer when co-cultured with cells than in cell-free cultures. Rediae released mostly motile cercariae throughout the observation period when in Bge medium and cells. Rediae cultured in 199 medium with Bge cells also produced progeny throughout most of the observation period. In the latter medium, progeny were much more likely to include rediae as well as cercariae. Some cercariae produced in vitro encysted as metacercariae. Rediae consumed cercariae released into culture but were not observed to attack one another or rediae of a different echinostome species.  相似文献
