Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is considered a solitary, territorial felid with a low degree of direct intraspecific interactions. Between 2002 and 2011 we observed four aggressive interactions between five different male Eurasian lynx, where two were lethal. All interactions occurred during the mating season and three of the interactions resulted in takeover of the home range by the intruder. Thus, in this study we demonstrate that aggressive interactions, sometimes with severe consequences, occur in male Eurasian lynx and suggest that they are driven primarily by access to female lynx in the mating season.  相似文献

The mbuna cichlids of Lake Malawi are a diverse, monophyletic, and recently derived clade. Sexual selection is thought to have accelerated their rapid diversification, though the mechanism by which this has occurred remains unknown. In this study, we examine the effect that male–male interactions have on female preference. We first used a short interaction experiment as a proxy for male dominance. We then measured female preference for (1) a single, isolated male; (2) a group of three, highly ranked males, relative to a group of lower ranked males; and (3) a group of three, mixed-ranked males against a similar group of mixed-rank males. We found that male dominance was highly correlated with male standard length. Female preference for male standard length and for dominance rank was significant in both isolated and group interactions. However, females only showed preference for groups of interacting males when males were segregated by dominance rank, not when groups were composed of both dominant and subordinate males. The results suggest that male–male contests influence female mating decisions. By investigating the rules that dictate the outcomes of such interactions we can elucidate the role that behavior plays in the diversification of this species-rich lineage.  相似文献

In social organizations characterized by male philopatry, social relationships between males are argued to be the strongest. Little is known about the social relationships of philopatric male spider monkeys. To address this limitation, we investigated social relationships among individually recognized wild adult male spider monkeys from two well-habituated communities in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, focusing on affiliative behaviors important in regulating male social relationships, including grooming, embracing, arm-wrapping, and grappling. We examined whether behaviors were reciprocated between male partners and whether age was a factor in how the behaviors were distributed or reciprocated, by examining differences between younger adult males (<10 years) and older adult males (≥14 years). Although we found evidence that affiliative behaviors were overall reciprocated between spider monkey adult males, there were pronounced differences in the interactions depending on their relative age. Reciprocation in grooming and embraces between same-age males suggests their relationships are valuable to both partners. Among different-age dyads, younger males gave more embraces than they received, were the initiators of grappling and arm-wrapped more often than with same-age males, suggesting relationships between younger and older males are more risky. This confirms that younger males are attracted to older males, probably because they value relationships with older males more than the reverse, but they are also at risk.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an anthropometrical survey conducted on male and female children aged 3, 4 and 5 years in Turkey. A set of 18 body dimensions was taken from 154 males and 132 females. It is considered that the 18 parameters are necessary for the design of school furniture, fittings and equipment in order to minimize musculoskeletal, visual and circulatory problems resulting from badly designed elements. This study identified significant gender differences in a set of 18 anthropometrical measures in this subject group.  相似文献

In many species, secondary sexual characteristics are used in both male–male competition and in attracting females. This suggests that social control of deception could contribute to the maintenance of honest sexual signalling. In the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, male red breeding coloration plays a dual role in sexual selection by functioning as both a threat signal in male–male competition and as a cue for female choice. To investigate whether male competition determines the level of signalling, the expression of red coloration and courtship activity were recorded both before and after male interactions. The results show that male competition influences signal expression by increasing the difference between males in signalling level. This in turn facilitates female choice and induces a preference for dominant males. Since a preference for dominant males may benefit females both directly and indirectly in this species with exclusively paternal care, male–male competition seems to increase the honesty of signalling and, thus, facilitates female choice in relation to male quality. This may increase the intensity of sexual selection and promote the evolution of breeding aggregations.  相似文献

Previous studies show that parasite prevalence and mortality/health are related to cultural variation in women's preferences for attractive and masculine traits in men. Other studies have suggested that both male–male competition and wealth may also be important correlates of cross-cultural variation in women's masculinity preferences. Here we examined whether exposure to cues of direct male–male competition, violence, or wealth influenced women's face preferences. We showed women slideshows of images with cues of low and high direct male–male competition/violence or wealth and measured their visual preferences for masculine face traits. Recent visual experience changed women's preferences for facial masculinity, with women preferring more masculine male faces after exposure to images of men engaged in direct physical competition, images of weapons, or images depicting items of high monetary value. Recent visual experience had no significant effects on preferences for masculinity in same-sex faces. Given that high levels of direct physical competition and violence among males may increase the importance of direct intra-sexual competition, it may be adaptive for women to shift visual preferences in favor of males with face cues indicating physical strength and dominance over investment in such environments. Similarly, in wealthy environments investment may be less important than other aspects of quality and so it may be adaptive for women to shift visual preferences in favor of males with face cues indicating other aspects of quality over investment. Overall, our data demonstrate that preferences can be strategically flexible according to recent visual experience and support the notion of environment contingent preferences.  相似文献

Mating system variation is profound in animals. In insects, female willingness to remate varies from mating with hundreds of males (extreme polyandry) to never remating (monandry). This variation in female behaviour is predicted to affect the pattern of selection on males, with intense pre-copulatory sexual selection under monandry compared to a mix of pre- and post-copulatory forces affecting fitness under polyandry. We tested the hypothesis that differences in female mating biology would be reflected in different costs of pre-copulatory competition between males. We observed that exposure to rival males early in life was highly costly for males of a monandrous species, but had lower costs in the polyandrous species. Males from the monandrous species housed with competitors showed reduced ability to obtain a mate and decreased longevity. These effects were specific to exposure to rivals compared with other types of social interactions (heterospecific male and mated female) and were either absent or weaker in males of the polyandrous species. We conclude that males in monandrous species suffer severe physiological costs from interactions with rivals and note the significance of male–male interactions as a source of stress in laboratory culture.  相似文献

In some members of the marsupial families Didelphidae and Dasyuridae, males are semelparous, that is, they live for only one mating season. Semelparity is proposed to be the result of the high energy demands of competing for matings with many females during a short breeding season. We argue that high adult female mortality rates between mating and weaning of the offspring selects for a 'bethedging' mating strategy in males. We tested this hypothesis in a well-studied field population of Antechinus agilis by estimating the number of females a male needs to mate with in order to have a high chance of siring at least one offspring that survives to the next breeding season. Our hypothesis predicts that species in which males are semelparous should have higher female mortality rates than species in which males are iteroparous. The limited available data for dasyurid marsupials support this prediction.  相似文献

Summary The male gametophyte of the Spermatophyta is of particular interest when studying quantitative modifications of repetitive DNA which accompany plant differentiation. In fact, this well documented system offers the opportunity to investigate the phenomenon at the nuclear level. In particular, it permits comparison between single haploid nuclei which, though derived from the same mitotic division, have different, well-defined morphological and functional processes. The aim of the present work was to investigate the behaviour of repetitive DNA during male gametogenesis inNarcissus papyraceus. By the use of A+T and G+C specific fluorochromes (DAPI and Chromomycin A3), and by in situ DNA digestion with appropriate restriction endonucleases (Eco RI and Hae III), it is shown that during the course of gametogenesis, generative and vegetative nuclei behave differently with respect to particular sections of the genome. Characteristic agglomerations of specific A+T rich DNA sequences can be observed, localized by the two distal ends of the spindle-shaped generative nucleus. The surface area occupied by the agglomerations differs significantly at the ends in all observed cases. The above agglomerations are present in most of the generative nuclei and are probably composed of repetitive DNA sequences. Some embryological questions are discussed in the light of these results.Abbreviations DAPI 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole - Eco RI Eco RI with star activity (N/AATTN) Dedicated to Prof. E. Male ornaments may advertise genetic benefits to females choosingmates. These benefits may come in the form of genes for resistanceto parasites and disease. Thus, females that prefer more ornamentedmales as mates may receive genes for enhanced immune systemfunction for their offspring. The common yellowthroat (Geothlypistrichas) is the only species to date in which a male plumageornament (size of the black facial mask) is known to be relatedto extrapair mating, and extrapair young are more immunocompetentthan their within-pair half-sibs (at least in colder years). To investigate whether male mask size signals superior immunefunction, we examined male ornaments (mask and bib size andcolor) in relation to measures of overall health (hematocrit)and immune system function (plasma immunoglobulin G [IgG] concentrationand cutaneous immune activity). We also investigated the rolethat testosterone may play in mediating the relationship betweenornaments and immunity. Male mask size was correlated positivelywith IgG level, suggesting that male mask size may indicatehumoral immunity. However, mask size was correlated negativelywith hematocrit and cutaneous immune activity (our measure ofnestling immunocompetence). Bib size and color were not relatedto these indices of immune function or health. Plasma testosteronelevel was neither related to immune function or health nor tothe expression of male ornaments. These results suggest thatthere might be a trade-off between immune system components,as well as between immunity and the production or advertisementof male ornaments.  相似文献

Though roles of β-catenin signaling during testis development have been well established, relatively little is known about its role in postnatal testicular physiology. Even less is known about its role in post-meiotic germ cell development and differentiation. Here, we report that β-catenin is highly expressed in post-meiotic germ cells and plays an important role during spermiogenesis in mice. Spermatid-specific deletion of β-catenin resulted in significantly reduced sperm count, increased germ cell apoptosis and impaired fertility. In addition, ultrastructural studies show that the loss of β-catenin in post-meiotic germ cells led to acrosomal defects, anomalous release of immature spermatids and disruption of adherens junctions between Sertoli cells and elongating spermatids (apical ectoplasmic specialization; ES). These defects are likely due to altered expression of several genes reportedly involved in Sertoli cell-germ cell adhesion and germ cell differentiation, as revealed by gene expression analysis. Taken together, our results suggest that β-catenin is an important molecular link that integrates Sertoli cell-germ cell adhesion with the signaling events essential for post-meiotic germ cell development and maturation. Since β-catenin is also highly expressed in the Sertoli cells, we propose that binding of germ cell β-catenin complex to β-catenin complex on Sertoli cell at the apical ES surface triggers a signaling cascade that regulates post-meiotic germ cell differentiation.  相似文献

Background

Development of a non-hormonal long-acting reversible contraceptive for men could have a significant impact on reducing unintended pregnancies. Vasalgel? is a high molecular weight polymer consisting of styrene-alt-maleic acid (SMA) dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide being developed as a reversible male contraceptive device. It forms a hydrogel when implanted into the vasa deferentia, which prevents the passage of sperm. Previous studies in the rabbit have proven its efficacy, durability and rapid onset. This study evaluates the capacity to restore sperm concentrations in ejaculates after a reversal procedure.

Methods

Sodium bicarbonate was injected into the vasa deferentia after fourteen months of azoospermia following the injection of two device variations (Vasalgel 100 and Vasalgel 80). Semen samples were then collected for six months and sperm characteristics were compared to baseline levels. Samples of vasa deferentia were obtained for histological examination.

Results

Spermatozoa were present in all subject ejaculates after the reversal procedure. Sperm concentration and sperm motility were similar to baseline levels after reversal, while sperm forward progression was significantly lower and normal acrosomes were not observed. Forward progression percentages increased linearly during six months of semen collection, however, normal acrosomes were not observed at the conclusion of the study. Histologically, several vasa deferentia were clear of the device and contained an intact epithelial lining. A smaller proportion of tissues contained residual test material. A secondary intraluminal inflammatory response was seen occasionally in the tissues containing residual material. There was no difference between the two device variations for studied parameters.

Conclusions

Vasalgel’s prevention of sperm transport for 14 months was reversed through an intravasal injection of sodium bicarbonate. Post-reversal sperm concentrations and motility returned to baseline levels during the six-month follow up. Residual material in the vas lumen or compromised epididymal and vas deferens function may be resulting in reduced forward progression and loss of acrosomes during transit through the vas. Reduced forward progression and the lack of normal acrosomes strongly suggest impaired sperm function.

During testis development, proliferation and death of gonocytes are highly regulated to establish a standard population of adult stem spermatogonia that maintain normal spermatogenesis. As Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGFbeta) can regulate proliferation and apoptosis, we investigated its expression and functions during testis development. We show that TGFbeta2 is only expressed in quiescent gonocytes and decreases gonocyte proliferation in vitro. To study the functions of TGFbeta2, we developed conditional mice that invalidate the TGFbeta receptor type II in germ cells. Most of the knock-out animals die during fetal life, but the surviving adults show a reduced pool of spermatogonial stem/progenitor cells and become sterile with time. Using an organ culture system mimicking in vivo development, we show higher proportions of proliferating and apoptotic gonocytes from 13.5 dpc until 1 dpp, suggesting a reduction of germinal quiescence in these animals. Conversely, a 24-hour TGFbeta2-treatment of explanted wild-type testes, isolated every day from 13.5 dpc until 1 dpp, increased the duration of quiescence. These data show that the TGFbeta signaling pathway plays a physiological role during testis development by acting directly as a negative regulator of the fetal and neonatal germ cell proliferation, and indicate that the TGFbeta signaling pathway might regulate the duration of germ cell quiescence and is necessary to maintain adult spermatogenesis.  相似文献

The role of the serotonergic mechanism in the regulation of β-endorphin (β-EP) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-like immunoreactivity in plasma was investigated. Increases in β-EP and ACTH-LI produced by quipazine maleate (QPZ), a serotonergic agonist, 1 hr after injection could be completely prevented by the serotonin (5-HT) antagonist, cinanserin (CIN), which when injected alone, decreased basal plasma concentrations of both β-EP-LI and ACTH-LI. Concurrent injections of L-5-HTP with the 5-HT reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, produced an additive increase in plasma β-EP-LI 1 hr after injection. Injection of the 5-HT antagonist, cyproheptadine, significantly decreased plasma β-EP-LI. Stress by immobilization for 30 min or exposing the rats to 40° ± 1°C for 30 min produced an approximate 4-fold increase in plasma β-EP-LI and ACTH-LI, which was potentiated by I.P. injections of fluoxetine. Furthermore, the stress induced increases in plasma concentrations of β-EP-LI and ACTH-LI were significantly reduced by the serotonin antagonists metergoline and cinanserin. These results suggest that 5-HT is a potent stimulator of both β-EP and ACTH release and the increase in plasma concentrations of ACTH and β-EP induced by stress are probably mediated, at least in part, by central serotonergic mechanisms.  相似文献

The micturition profile in conscious animals and the urethrovesical coordination in anesthetized conditions were investigated in 6- and 24-mo-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The in vitro pharmacological responses to KCl, electrical field stimulation (EFS), carbachol, phenylephrine, and isoprenaline were determined in the isolated bladder body, the bladder neck, and urethra. A morphometric and immunohistological study has been included. During conscious cystomanometry, 63% of the aging rats but only 25% of the adult rats showed spontaneous contractions during the bladder-filling phase. In conscious aging rats, basal pressure, threshold pressure, and micturition pressure were also significantly increased. In anesthetized aging rats, a decrease in resting urethral pressure at micturition threshold and the occurrence of a significant delay in urethral relaxation during micturition were associated with an increased residual volume. In all isolated tissues, contractile response to KCl was not modified with aging, whereas age-related decreases in maximal responses to carbachol in the bladder body and to phenylephrine and carbachol in the urethra were observed. In the bladder neck only, we found a significant decrease in the amplitude of neurogenic contractions associated with fibrosis but without decrease in nerve density. These experiments show significant modifications in the voiding pattern of aging rats associated with urethral dysfunction and with regionally specific pharmacological and structural changes of the urinary tract. We propose that aging in rats is characterized by an impairment of the urethrovesical coordination, leading to bladder dysfunctions similar to those induced by bladder outlet obstruction.  相似文献

Two types of males are present in the Jalapa population of Xiphophorus helleri: Males with a black or dark brownish mid-lateral stripe ("black males") mature earlier and are smaller than males with a red or brownish mid-lateral stripe ("red males"). We tested the hypothesis that the colour patterns of red males may be regarded as ornaments, which evolved as the result of inter- and/or intrasexual selection. As predicted, in choice tests females exhibited a strong preference for red versus black males. Furthermore, in competition experiments red males became dominant over black males with no exception, both when body size was equal and even when red males were 3–5 mm smaller than black males. However, contrary to our prediction, sneak–chase behaviour in black males was not detected, and courtship displays occurred at similar rates in both morphs. Red males are always heterozygous, with one allele for red and another for black colouration. This genetic constraint potentially prevents the extinction of the black morph. Possibly, the colour patterns of red males are functioning as indicators of heterozygosity. According to the "heterozygosity theory of mate choice", the female's preference for red males may be adaptive.  相似文献

Does male-biased predation lead to male scarcity in viviparous fish?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Male predation risk due to ornaments seldom reduces female mating opportunities because males escape costs through alternative mating strategies and/or females cease to select for highly ornamented males. Males of the Amarillo fish Girardinichthys multiradiatus (Goodeidae) have large sexually selected fins that impair attack-avoidance manoeuvres. This fish was used to seek evidence that intersexual selection for handicapping traits can result in a deficit of acceptable mating partners. Also it was examined whether, under male scarcity, females remain choosy to the point of missing mating opportunities, and that they can exert effective control over matings, which is a pre-condition of effective female choice. It was found that snakes prey disproportionately on males, that it leads to female-biased sex ratios, and that highly ornamented males are more scarce after predation than males with small ornaments. Females can avoid being fertilized by unattractive males, and that missing one reproductive period can lead to infertility. Thus it appears that females have promoted the exaggeration of a male trait that increases predation risk, remain choosy even when acceptable males are scarce, and pay a large cost when missing mating opportunities. A prediction from these results is that females enjoy substantial fitness benefits from mating with highly ornamented males, which override the occasional fatal costs of refusing to mate with sub–optimal males. One potential consequence of female selectivity and control over matings when males are scarce may be a reduced capability to colonize new habitats.  相似文献
