Introduction

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders and a leading cause of disability worldwide. It constitutes a serious public health problem, particularly among elderly individuals. Most depressed elderly patients are treated by primary care (PC) physicians. The “Patient Health Questionnaire” (PHQ-2) is an instrument used for the detection of depression in PC settings.

Objective

Evaluate the performance of the PHQ-2 in a low-income and uneducated elderly PC population.

Methods

A non-probabilistic population sample of 142 individuals was selected from the healthcare unit''s users ≧60 years. Criterion validity was assessed by estimating the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of the PHQ-2 in comparison with the structured interview using the DSM-IV. The estimates of sensitivity and specificity were obtained from varying cut-offs of the PHQ-2 score. A Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated.

Results

The group was predominantly female (73.9%), with low education level (mean 3 years of schooling). The mean age was 72.5 years old. The prevalence of depression was 26.1%. The best values of sensitivity (0.74), specificity (0.77), PPV (0.50) e NPV (0.90) were obtained with score equal to 1. The AUC was 0.77, indicating a modest performance of the test accuracy.

Conclusion

The simplicity of the PHQ-2 is an advantage for its use in PC. The high NPV indicated that 90% of those who tested negative would not need additional tests. However, the low PPV indicated that the PHQ-2 is not sufficient to screen for depression. The application of the instrument could be the first step of the screening, that would include a second step to all those with positive tests formerly.  相似文献

Objectives

This study aimed to explore cut-off scores of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) for depression screening in Chinese rural elderly.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 839 residents aged 60 years and above in rural areas of Liuyang County. PHQ-9 was adopted to evaluate depression. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID-I) was adopted to diagnose major depressive disorder (MDD) as a golden standard. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, positive and negative likelihood ratio, Youden’s index and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were analyzed on PHQ-9 and PHQ-2.

Results

The Cronbach''s alphas of PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 were 0.82 and 0.76, respectively. The score of 8 of the PHQ-9 showed the highest Youden’s index of 0.85, with a sensitivity of 0.97 and specificity of 0.89 respectively, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.96–0.98). The score of 3 of PHQ-2 showed the highest Youden’s index of 0.79, with both sensitivity and specificity were 0.90 and the AUC was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.90–0.97).

Conclusions

Both PHQ-9 and PHQ-2 are valid screening instruments for depression in the rural elderly in China, with recommended cut-off scores of 8 and 3 respectively.  相似文献

Surface wettability and microtopography can either enhance or deter larval settlement of many sessile marine organisms. This study quantifies the effect of these surface properties on the settlement of pediveligers of Mytilus galloprovincialis, using polymers spanning a range of wettability and microtextured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Furthermore, the adhesion strength of settled pediveligers on microtextured PDMS surfaces was quantified using a flow chamber. Settlement was enhanced at the hydrophilic end of the wettability spectrum, where mean settlement on nylon reached 33.5 ± 13.1%. In contrast, mean settlement on the most hydrophobic polymer (PDMS) was 4.2 ± 3.2%. Microtopography had a much stronger effect compared to wettability, where 400 μm textured PDMS enhanced settlement above 90%. Settlement preferences were also positively correlated to adhesion strength at flow rates of 4 knots, with all initially settled pediveligers on smooth PDMS detaching, while 79.9 ± 5.7% of pediveligers remained on the 400 μm texture.  相似文献

Studies show poor glycemic control is associated with increased risk of dementia among patients with Type 2 diabetes, indicating potential for prevention of dementia with improved glycemia. Emerging evidence suggests that a relationship between short-term glycemic control and cognitive function exists in Type 2 diabetes. However, detailed mechanisms relating diabetic dementia are lacking, as other concurrent conditions, such as depression, may also increase the risk of dementia in Type 2 diabetes. We examined the effects of glycemic control and depression on cognitive function in 88 patients (mean age, 67 ± 4 years) whose A1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) levels, comorbid depression, mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores were recorded at baseline. Seventeen patients had depression; 14 agreed on anti-depressants. In 6 months, 69 patients reached A1c goal of < 7% (A1c from 9.7 ± 0.8 to 6.4 ± 0.3) while cognition improved significantly (MMSE scored from 20.2 ± 3.5 to 26.2 ± 2.1, p < 0.05). Cognitive increment in controlled diabetes was more consistently observed if their underlying depression was effectively treated (n ? 14). Nineteen patients did not reach A1c goal of < 7% (A1c from 9.6 ± 0.9 to 8.9 ± 0.9) while cognitive increment was minimal (MMSE scored from 20.6 ± 4.9 to 21.3 ± 5.1, p > 0.05). Cognitive decrements were observed among depressed diabetics who refused anti-depressants. Multivariate analysis adjusted for age, education, alcohol use, and other variables yielded similar results. We found controlled glycemia and depression prevent cognitive decline. Further research into mechanisms of cognitive impairment in diabetes may allow us to challenge the concept of dementia in those patients as an irremediable disease.  相似文献

Women in low-income settings, common in India, are at risk of inadequate zinc intake due to poor diet quality and low consumption of flesh foods rich in zinc. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of zinc status of non-pregnant rural and tribal women living in central India and to identify dietary and non-dietary factors associated with the biochemical zinc status of these women. Rural and tribal non-pregnant women 18–30 years of age were selected using proportion to population sampling near Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Sociodemographic, biochemical (serum zinc), clinical, and dietary data (1-day interactive 24-h recall) were collected. The mean age of women (n?=?109; rural?=?52; tribal?=?56) was 23.2 years and mean BMI was 17.9 kg/m2. The majority of the participants identified as being non-vegetarian (72 %). The mean?±?SD serum zinc concentration was 10.8?±?1.6 μmol/L, and 52 % of participants had a low serum zinc concentration according to the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG). The median (first and third quartile) energy, zinc intake, and phytate/zinc molar ratio was 5.4 (4.2, 6.7)?MJ/day, 5.3 (3.8, 7.0)?mg/day, and 26 (22, 28), respectively. Zinc intakes were well below IZiNCG recommendations for dietary zinc of 9 mg/day for non-pregnant women aged 14–18 years and 7 mg/day for non-pregnant women aged ≥19 years. Using linear regression analysis to identify non-dietary and dietary factors associated with serum zinc, a significant association was only found for current lactation (p?=?0.012) and energy intake (p?相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the depression status and associated factors in occupational truck drivers. Four hundred and forty-one male occupational truck drivers were recruited from transport companies. The self-rating depression scale (SDS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-R Short Scale were used to measure the depression status and factors associated with it for occupational truck drivers. The observed SDS of (mean ± SD) 52.91 ± 11.41 was significantly higher than the average national score (41.99 ± 10.57). There were 237 cases of depression, making the incidence of 53.74 %: 116 (26.30 %) patients had mild depression, 104 (23.58 %) moderate depression, and 17 (3.85 %) severe depression. Drivers with <1 year of experience had the highest SDS score; their score was significantly (p < 0.05) different from the one in more experienced drivers. Furthermore, the SDS score in drivers with high school education was significantly higher than in drivers with secondary education (53.41 ± 11.67 vs. 50.62 ± 11.77, respectively; p < 0.05). SDS scores positively correlated with extroversion and neuroticism, and negatively correlated with psychoticism. In conclusion, depression is present in professional drivers, especially those with <1 year of driving experience. The level of depression is associated with driving experience, education status and personality. Based on this study, we propose to establish psychological health profiles for each professional driver, and to provide psychological counseling to them, especially drivers with <1 year of experience.  相似文献

To study the response of the cardiovascular system, to exercise tolerance in-patients over 75 years old with coronary heart disease (CHD), and to evaluate the significance of the parameters of the treadmill exercise test (TET). 110 patients received TET and coronary artery angiography. They were divided into two groups: the elderly patients group included 50 patients over 75 years old, and the control group included 60 patients under 60 years old. (1) With aging, there were much more CHD patients in the positive TET (P < 0.05) than in the negative TET (P > 0.05). (2) The parameters of TET for the elderly CHD patients group, included exercise time, peak heart rate, and the onset of ST depression, were lower than the control group (P < 0.05). There was no statistical significance between the two groups in the extent and duration of ST depression (P < 0.05). (1) In TET, the elderly patients had the higher diagnostic value on CHD. (2) The elderly patients with CHD had the lower endurance to exercise test.  相似文献

Background

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCC) is a transient condition characterised by severe left ventricular dysfunction combined with symptoms and signs mimicking myocardial infarction. Emotional triggers are common, but little is known about the psychological background characteristics of TCC. This study examined whether patients with TTC have higher levels of psychological distress (depressive symptoms, perceived stress, general anxiety), illness-related anxiety and distinct personality factors compared with healthy controls and patients with heart failure.

Methods and Results

Patients with TCC (N = 18; mean age 68.3 ± 11.7 years, 77.8?% women) and two comparison groups (healthy controls: N = 19, age 60.0 ± 7.6, 68.4?% women and patients with chronic heart failure: N = 19, age 68.8 ± 10.1, 68.4?% women) completed standardised questionnaires to measure depression (PHQ?9), perceived stress (PSS-10), general anxiety (GAD-7), illness-related anxiety (WI-7) and personality factors (NEO-FFI and DS-14). Psychological measures were obtained at 23 ± 18 months following the acute TTC event. Results showed that patients with TCC had higher levels of depressive symptoms (5.2 ± 5.2 vs. 2.5 ± 2.4, p = 0.039) and illness-related anxiety (2.1 ± 1.7 vs. 0.7 ± 1.3, p = 0.005) compared with healthy controls. Patients with TCC did not display significantly elevated perceived stress (p = 0.072) or general anxiety (p = 0.170). Regarding personality factors, levels of openness were lower in TCC compared with healthy controls (34.2 ± 4.3 vs. 38.2 ± 5.6, p = 0.021). No differences between TCC and heart failure patients were found regarding the psychological measures.

Conclusions

TCC is associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms, more illness-related anxiety and less openness compared with healthy controls. These data suggest that TCC is associated with adverse psychological factors that may persist well after the acute episode.

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00651.x Oral health‐related quality of life and nutritional status of institutionalized elderly population aged 60 years and above in Mysore City, India Objective: To assess whether oral health–related quality of life (OHRQoL) is associated with nutritional status in the institutionalised elderly population of Mysore. Background: Malnutrition in the elderly has an evident impact on their general health and quality of life. Analysis of data of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and their association with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) results improves our understanding of the complex relationship between oral health and malnutrition. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among the institutionalised elderly population in Mysore city, Karnataka. Data on socio‐demographic, oral health status were gathered. OHRQoL was evaluated using GOHAI, and malnutrition risk using MNA. Results: Out of 141 elderly, 41.1% were men and 58.9% were women with mean age of 72.2 ± 7.5 years. Mean GOHAI score was 47.03 ± 9.2, with 69.5% had low perception of oral health. Mean MNA score was 9.91 ± 2.4, 15.6% were malnourished, 52.5% were at risk of malnutrition and 31.9% were adequately nourished. A strong association was found between the mean GOHAI and MNA scores. Conclusion: Oral health–related quality of life was associated with nutritional deficit, and it requires a greater integration between dentistry and nutrition in the health promotion of older adults.  相似文献

Background: In a range of chronic conditions including diabetes, it has been observed that depressive symptoms may be associated with nonadherence to medications. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the main effects, and interactive effect, of depression and gender on patients adherence to oral diabetes medications. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed, in which persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus completed a questionnaire regarding medication use behaviors, depressive symptoms (measured by the 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ-8]), health beliefs, and demographics. A 2 x 2 factorial analysis of variance was used to determine the effects of gender and depression on medication adherence after adjusting for age, education, self efficacy, social support, and number of doses of diabetes medications. Results: Of the 391 respondents who completed the questionnaire, 73 (18.7%) were categorized as having depression (ie, PHQ-8 score >10). Overall, women (n = 196) had a mean (SD) score of 6.10 (6.19) on the PHQ-8, and men (n = 195) had a lower score of 4.62 (5.28) (t = 2.75; P < 0.01). There was a significant main effect of depression, but not gender, on patients' adherence to diabetes medications in that those who were categorized as depressed had significantly worse adherence to diabetes medications (F = 4.82; P = 0.03).Additionally, there was a significant “gender x depression” interaction effect on adherence (F = 5.93; P = 0.01). Men with depression had mean adherence scores that indicated more nonadherence than did men without depression (9.44 [3.45] vs 7.47 [2.50], respectively), but adherence varied little between women with depression and women without depression (7.83 [2.69] vs 7.55 [2.58], respectively). Conclusions: The association between depression and medication adherence appears to be stronger in men than in women. Clinicians should be cognizant of the potential effect of depression on self-care for diabetes, particularly in men with depressive symptoms.  相似文献

Background

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) has long been considered as the bariatric procedure with the highest peri-operative and long-term complication rate. However, modern peri-operative care, including laparoscopic and staged-approach, has significantly reduced the complication rate related to this procedure. The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the current outcomes of laparoscopic BPD-DS in a high volume centre.

Methods

All patients who had a laparoscopic BPD-DS with a hand-sewn anastomosis performed between 2011 and 2015 (N = 566) were reviewed. Data were obtained from our prospectively maintained electronic database and are reported as a Mean ± standard deviation.

Results

The mean age of the 566 patients was 41 ± 10 years, with 78 % women. Initial body mass index was 49 ± 6 kg/m2. There was no 90-days mortality. Hospital stay was 4.5 ± 3 days. Major 30-days complications occurred in 3.0 % (n = 17) of the patients and minor complications in 2.5 % (N = 14). Excess weight loss was 81 ± 14 % at 12 m, 88 ± 13 % at 24 m, 83 ± 14 % at 36 months. Total body weight loss (kg) was 57 ± 13 kg at 12 months, 63 ± 14 kg at 24 months and 61 ± 17 kg at 36 months. Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) dropped from 6.1 ± 1 % to 4.7 ± 0.5 % (p < 0.005) and the percentage of patients with an HbA1C above 6 % decreased from 38 to 1.4 % (p < 0.005). Over 21 ± 12 months follow-up, readmission was required in 3.5 % and reoperation in 0.5 % of the patients.

Conclusion

The current short and medium-term complication rate of laparoscopic BPD-DS are similar to other mixed bariatric procedures with excellent metabolic outcomes.

This report presents data on hemoglobin concentrations in a sample of Himalayan high altitude natives measured at their habitual altitude of residence. In this sample of 270 healthy Tibetan adults resident at 3250–3560 m in Upper Chumik, Nepal, the mean hemoglobin concentration is 16.1 ± 1.2 gm/dl among adult males, 14.4 ± 1.4 gm/dl among premenopausal and 15.0 ± 1.1 gm/dl among postmenopausal adult females. 123 of 126 (98%) males, 96 of 100 (96%) premenopausal and 36 of 44 (82%) postmenopausal females have hemoglobin concentrations within two standard deviations of the sea level mean. These data demonstrate that a healthy population may reside at high altitude without the degree of elevation in hemoglobin widely known and cited for Andean highlanders. Comparing published data on mean hemoglobin concentrations of adult Himalayan and Andean samples residing between 3200 m and 4100 m reveals that Himalayan means are systematically lower. This in turn may account for the reported population differences in the prevalence of chronic mountain sickness (Monge's disease). It is hypothesized that Himalayan and Andean highlanders represent alternative patterns of high altitude hematological adaptation.  相似文献

Purpose

With the increased use of genetic testing for arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C), this disease is being increasingly recognised among elderly patients. However, elderly ARVD/C patients were underrepresented in prior cohorts. We aimed to describe the phenotypical characteristics and outcomes among ARVD/C patients surviving ≥50 years.

Methods

We assessed detailed phenotypical data of 29 patients who (1) presented at ≥50 years of age; and (2) fulfilled 2010 Task Force Criteria (TFC) for ARVD/C by last follow-up. Primary outcome was the occurrence of a major ventricular arrhythmia (sudden cardiac death, resuscitated sudden cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular tachycardia).

Results

The majority (55?%) of elderly ARVD/C subjects were male, with a mean age of 59.0 ± 5.8 years at presentation. Study participants fulfilled a median of six (IQR 5–8) TFC criteria by last follow-up, of which arrhythmia criteria were most frequent (97?%), followed by structural criteria (83?%), depolarisation criteria (72?%) and repolarisation criteria (69?%). By last follow-up, 15 (52?%) patients had experienced major ventricular arrhythmias. Most patients (n = 12) presented with this arrhythmia, while three experienced the event during 5.4 ± 3.2 years of follow-up. Compared with patients without an arrhythmic event, patients with major arrhythmias were more likely to be proband (p < 0.001) and male (p = 0.042). Likewise, survival free from sustained ventricular arrhythmia was lower among probands and males.

Conclusion

Phenotypic characteristics of elderly ARVD/C patients are characterised by depolarisation abnormalities and structural cardiac changes. Ventricular arrhythmias in this elderly cohort are associated with male gender and proband status.

Numerous observations suggest a possible connection between the levels of Mg, Zn, Fe, and Zn and the incidence of depressive symptoms. Depression is two to three times more common in women than in men. The menopausal period is extremely conducive to depressive disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the severity of depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women depending on the levels of Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Fe. The study included 198 healthy postmenopausal women at the average age of 56.26 ± 5.55 years. In the first part of the study, standardized research tools were used, namely the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The second part involved biochemical analysis of Mg, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Fe levels in blood serum. The lowest Cu levels were observed in women without depressive symptoms (1.07 ± 0.22 mg/l) and the highest in those with severe depressive symptoms (1.19 ± 0.17 mg/l), (p ≤ 0.05). The lowest Mg levels were observed in women with depressive symptoms (14.28 ± 2.13 mg/l), and the highest in women without depressive symptoms (16.30 ± 3.51 mg/l), (p ≤ 0.05). The average serum Mg levels (15.75 ± 3.23 mg/l) decreased compared to the reference values (18.77–24 mg/l). What is striking is a potential relation between the levels of Mg and Cu and depressiveness. Our results indicate to a higher vulnerability to depression in a group of women with lower levels of Mg and higher levels of Cu.  相似文献

This paper illustrates the effects of abrupt stem burial (burial depth ~0.5 m) on tree growth in mature (46 ± 8 years) European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) trees. In contrast to the previous research, which was mostly carried out with saplings and on experimental sites where regular aggradation occurred through the transport of sand, this work focuses on the impact of natural, abrupt burial of mature trees with rocks contained in a sandy-silty matrix typical for debris flows in mountainous headwater catchments. The effect of burial is assessed radially and axially within the stem and over almost three decades after burial. The analysis of growth disturbances and their intensity was based on the 143 cross sections (572 growth series) taken at 10-cm intervals from 6 Larix decidua Mill. The results show quite clearly that abrupt burial causes massive suppression of radial growth as compared to pre-event conditions (mean 77 %, min 38 %, max 92 %, SD 7.2 %). The trees sampled were unable to resume pre-burial growth rates even after 25 years, but recovered to reference growth conditions (as measured in undisturbed, local reference trees) after 15 years (min 3 years, max 25 years, SD 9 years). The results differ only insignificantly between different heights along the tree axis and suppression is equally well expressed at different radial positions within the stem.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Hot water bathing – a Japanese traditional practice – has not been evaluated for its association with night- and sleep-time blood pressure (BP) in large population. In this longitudinal analysis, bathing parameters and ambulatory BP were repeatedly measured for 2 nights in 758 Japanese elderly individuals. Participants were divided into three groups according to tertile values of time soaked in the bathtub (Duration: tertile value, 11 and 15 min), time from bathing-end to bedtime (Time before bedtime: tertile value, 42 and 106 min), and temperature of hot water in the bathtub (Water temp: tertile value, 40.3 and 41.2 °C). Participants’ mean age was 70.9 years, and mean night- and sleep-time systolic BP (SBP) and dipping were 115.1 ± 16.1, 114.2 ± 16.2 mmHg, and 14.2 ± 8.8%, respectively. Multivariable mixed-effect linear regression models adjusted for potential confounding factors suggested that nighttime SBP was significantly lower in the intermediate Time before bedtime group by 1.7 mmHg (95% CI, 0.2–3.1) and in the short group by 1.9 mmHg (95% CI, 0.1–3.7) than that in the long group. Dipping was significantly greater in the intermediate Time before bedtime group by 1.8% (95% CI, 0.7–2.9) and in the short group by 1.8% (95% CI, 0.6–3.1) than that in the long group. These associations were consistent regarding sleep-time SBP. Conversely, Water temp and Duration did not significantly associate with any ambulatory BP parameter. Remarkably, Time before bedtime significantly prolonged with increases in tertiles of Water temp (P for trend = 0.006). In conclusion, the findings of this study revealed that Japanese hot water bathing, especially the short time from bathing-end to bedtime, was associated with lower night- and sleep-time BP and greater dipping in an elderly population.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a caffeine-containing energy drink on physical performance during a rugby sevens competition. A second purpose was to investigate the post-competition urinary caffeine concentration derived from the energy drink intake. On two non-consecutive days of a friendly tournament, 16 women from the Spanish National rugby sevens Team (mean age and body mass = 23 ± 2 years and 66 ± 7 kg) ingested 3 mg of caffeine per kg of body mass in the form of an energy drink (Fure®, ProEnergetics) or the same drink without caffeine (placebo). After 60 min for caffeine absorption, participants performed a 15-s maximal jump test, a 6 × 30 m sprint test, and then played three rugby sevens games against another national team. Individual running pace and instantaneous speed during the games were assessed using global positioning satellite (GPS) devices. Urine samples were obtained pre and post-competition. In comparison to the placebo, the ingestion of the energy drink increased muscle power output during the jump series (23.5 ± 10.1 vs. 25.6 ± 11.8 kW, P = 0.05), running pace during the games (87.5 ± 8.3 vs. 95.4 ± 12.7 m/min, P < 0.05), and pace at sprint velocity (4.6 ± 3.3 vs. 6.1 ± 3.4 m/min, P < 0.05). However, the energy drink did not affect maximal running speed during the repeated sprint test (25.0 ± 1.5 vs. 25.0 ± 1.7 km/h). The ingestion of the energy drink resulted in a higher post-competition urine caffeine concentration than the placebo (3.3 ± 0.7 vs. 0.2 ± 0.1 μg/mL; P < 0.05). In summary, 3 mg/kg of caffeine in the form of a commercially available energy drink considerably enhanced physical performance during a women’s rugby sevens competition.  相似文献

Background: Due to the dry continental climate, the mountains of eastern Ladakh are unglaciated up to 6200–6400 m, with relatively large areas of developed soils between 5600 and 6000 m covered by sparse subnival vegetation. However, there are no studies on the composition of plant assemblages from such extreme elevations, their microclimates, vertical distributions and adaptive strategies.

Aims: The subnival vegetation was described and the relationship between microclimate, species distribution and species functional traits was analysed.

Methods: In total, 481 vegetation samples from 91 permanent plots, a floristic database of Ladakh and extensive microclimate measurements were used. Measurements of 15 functional traits were made and their relationship with species distribution between 4600 and 6150 m was tested.

Results: The subnival zone was characterised by extreme diurnal temperature fluctuations, a short growing season (between 88 and 153 days) and low soil temperature during the growing season (between 2.9 °C and 5.9 °C). It hosted 67 species, mainly hemicryptophytes, and ranged from ca. 5600 m to the highest known occurrence of vascular plants in the region (6150 m). The most common plant families were Brassicaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae, Fabaceae and Cyperaceae. Subnival specialists with narrow elevational ranges represented 42% of the flora; these species were shorter, had relatively higher water content and water-use efficiency and contained more nutrients and soluble carbohydrates than species with a wider elevational range.

Conclusions: The subnival vegetation of eastern Ladakh is dominated by generalist species with wide vertical ranges and not by high-elevation specialists. These findings, in view of the vast unglaciated areas available for range extension, suggest a relatively high resilience of the subnival flora to climate change in this region.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate differences in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level in patients with acute schizophrenia, unipolar depression, bipolar depression and bipolar mania. Serum level of TSH was measured in 1,685 Caucasian patients (1,064 women, 63.1 %; mean age 46.4). Mean serum TSH concentration was: schizophrenia (n = 769) 1.71 μIU/mL, unipolar depression (n = 651) 1.63 μIU/mL, bipolar disorder (n = 264) 1.86 μIU/mL, bipolar depression (n = 203) 2.00 μIU/mL, bipolar mania (n = 61) 1.38 μIU/mL (H = 11.58, p = 0.009). Depending on the normal range used, the overall rate of being above or below the normal range was 7.9–22.3 % for schizophrenia, 13.9–26.0 % for unipolar depression, 10.8–27.6 % for bipolar disorder, 12.2–28.5 % for bipolar depression, and 11.4–24.5 % for bipolar mania. We have also found differences in TSH levels between the age groups (≤20, >20 years and ≤40, >40 years and ≤60 years and >60 years). TSH level was negatively correlated with age (r = ? 0.23, p < 0.001). Weak correlations with age have been found in the schizophrenia (r = ? 0.21, p < 0.001), unipolar depression (r = ? 0.23, p < 0.001), bipolar depression (r = ? 0.25, p = 0.002) and bipolar disorder (r = ? 0.21, p = 0.005) groups. Our results confirm that there may be a higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions in patients with mood disorders (both unipolar and bipolar) and that these two diagnostic groups differ in terms of direction and frequency of thyroid dysfunctions.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of body mass index (BMI) as a predictor of body fat in elderly women. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 1423 women aged 67 ± 5 (mean ± SD, range: 60 to 88) years were consecutively enrolled into the study. Fat mass (FM) was measured using DXA. Results: BMI explained 72.9% of FM variance (p < 0.0001), with a root mean square error of estimate (RMSE) of 3.5 kg. After standardization of RMSE on the dependent variable as RMSE%, the prediction error equaled 15%. BMI explained 54.8% of FM% variance (p < 0.0001), with an RMSE of 4.1%, corresponding to an RMSE% of 11%. Discussion: The relatively high RMSE% of the FM and FM%‐BMI associations caution against the use of BMI as an adiposity index in individual elderly women. However, an error corresponding to 11% of FM% may be accepted for population studies of body fat in elderly women.  相似文献
