The attempt to define life has gained new momentum in the wake of novel fields such as synthetic biology, astrobiology, and artificial life. In a series of articles, Cleland, Chyba, and Machery claim that definitions of life seek to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for applying the concept of life—something that such definitions cannot, and should not do. We argue that this criticism is largely unwarranted. Cleland, Chyba, and Machery approach definitions of life as classifying devices, thereby neglecting their other epistemic roles. We identify within the discussions of the nature and origin of life three other types of definitions: theoretical, transdisciplinary, and diagnostic definitions. The primary aim of these definitions is not to distinguish life from nonlife, although they can also be used for classificatory purposes. We focus on the definitions of life within the budding field of astrobiology, paying particular attention to transdisciplinary definitions, and diagnostic definitions in the search for biosignatures from other planets. 相似文献

A DNA double helix consists of two complementary strands antiparallel with each other. One of them is the sense chain, while the other is an antisense chain which does not directly involve the protein-encoding process. The reason that an antisense chain cannot encode for a protein is generally attributed to the lack of certain preconditions such as a promotor and some necessary sequence segments. Suppose it were provided with all these preconditions, could an antisense chain encode for an antisense protein? To answer this question, an analysis has been performed based on the existing database. The origin of birds and avian flight from within the archosaurian radiation has been among the most contentious issues in paleobiology. Although there is general agreement that birds are related to theropod dinosaurs at some level, debate centers on whether birds are derived directly from highly derived theropods, the current dogma, or from an earlier common ancestor lacking suites of derived anatomical characters. Recent discoveries from the Early Cretaceous of China have highlighted the debate, with claims of the discovery of all stages of feather evolution and ancestral birds (theropod dinosaurs), although the deposits are at least 25 million years younger than those containing the earliest known bird Archaeopteryx. In the first part of the study we examine the fossil evidence relating to alleged feather progenitors, commonly referred to as protofeathers, in these putative ancestors of birds. Our findings show no evidence for the existence of protofeathers and consequently no evidence in support of the follicular theory of the morphogenesis of the feather. Rather, based on histological studies of the integument of modern reptiles, which show complex patterns of the collagen fibers of the dermis, we conclude that "protofeathers" are probably the remains of collagenous fiber "meshworks" that reinforced the dinosaur integument. These "meshworks" of the skin frequently formed aberrant patterns resembling feathers as a consequence of decomposition. Our findings also draw support from new paleontological evidence. We describe integumental structures, very similar to "protofeathers," preserved within the rib area of a Psittacosaurus specimen from Nanjing, China, an ornithopod dinosaur unconnected with the ancestry of birds. These integumental structures show a strong resemblance to the collagenous fiber systems in the dermis of many animals. We also report the presence of scales in the forearm of the theropod ornithomimid (bird mimic) dinosaur, Pelecanimimus, from Spain. In the second part of the study we examine evidence relating to the most critical character thought to link birds to derived theropods, a tridactyl hand composed of digits 1-2-3. We maintain the evidence supports interpretation of bird wing digit identity as 2,3,4, which appears different from that in theropod dinosaurs. The phylogenetic significance of Chinese microraptors is also discussed, with respect to bird origins and flight origins. We suggest that a possible solution to the disparate data is that Aves plus bird-like maniraptoran theropods (e.g., microraptors and others) may be a separate clade, distinctive from the main lineage of Theropoda, a remnant of the early avian radiation, exhibiting all stages of flight and flightlessness. 相似文献

Interest in incorporating life history research from evolutionary biology into the human sciences has grown rapidly in recent years. Two core features of this research have the potential to prove valuable in strengthening theoretical frameworks in the health and social sciences: the idea that there is a fundamental trade-off between reproduction and health; and that environmental influences are important in determining how life histories develop. However, the literature on human life histories has increasingly travelled away from its origins in biology, and become conceptually diverse. For example, there are differences of opinion between evolutionary researchers about the extent to which behavioural traits associate with life history traits to form ‘life history strategies’. Here, I review the different approaches to human life histories from evolutionary anthropologists, developmental psychologists and personality psychologists, in order to assess the evidence for human ‘life history strategies’. While there is precedent in biology for the argument that some behavioural traits, notably risk-taking behaviour, may be linked in predictable ways with life history traits, there is little theoretical or empirical justification for including a very wide range of behavioural traits in a ‘life history strategy’. Given the potential of life history approaches to provide a powerful theoretical framework for understanding human health and behaviour, I then recommend productive ways forward for the field: 1) greater focus on the life history trade-offs which underlie proposed strategies; 2) greater precision when using the language of life history theory and life history strategies; 3) collecting more empirical data, from a diverse range of populations, on linkages between life history traits, behavioural traits and the environment, including the underlying mechanisms which generate these linkages; and 4) greater integration with the social and health sciences. 相似文献

Evolution appears to be especially rapid during speciation, and the genes involved in speciation should be evident in species such as humans that have recently speciated or are presently in the process of speciation. Haldane's rule is that when one sex is sterile or inviable in interspecific F(1) hybrids, it is usually the heterogametic sex. For mammals, this implicates genes on the X chromosome as those particularly responsible for speciation. A preponderance of sex- and reproduction-related genes on the X chromosome has been shown repeatedly, but also mental retardation genes are more frequent on the X chromosome. We argue that brain, testis, and placenta are those organs most responsible for human speciation. Furthermore, the high degree of complexity of the vertebrate genome demands coordinate evolution of new characters. This coordination is best attained when the same set of genes is redeployed for these new characters in the brain, testis, and placenta. 相似文献

A screening of 133 cyanobacterial strains in logarithmic growth phase was done to study their effects on rice germination
and growth. In unialgal, non axenic culture 30% of the strains had no effect, while 70% of the strains had a negative effect
on germination. In contrast, growth of rice was stimulated by 21% of the isolates and inhibited by 12%.
Although 57% of the unicellular strains had a positive effect and many Nostoc strains had a negative one, it was not possible
to correlate specific effects with taxonomic groups. Among the eight strains showing a stimulatory effect on growth only Anabaena
77S19 remained effective in axenic culture. Partitioning Anabaena 77S19 exudates into three fractions revealed that the organic
fraction was more inhibitory. From this work it is concluded that presoaking rice seeds in a cyanobacterial culture should

Do acid-tolerant picocyanobacteria exist? A study of two strains isolated from humic lakes in Poland
The occurrence of picocyanobacteria, the smallest cell-size fraction of cyanobacteria, in low-pH waters, is still poorly studied. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that picocyanobacteria found occasionally in low-pH environments are adapted to such water conditions. We isolated picocyanobacteria by means of the cytometric method from two humic lakes with pH ≤5. We obtained two strains belonging to two cosmopolitan phylogenetic clades of picocyanobacteria: Cyanobium gracile cluster and Subalpine cluster I. Experiments on filtered lake water from low-pH (≤5) and slightly alkaline (pH 8.2) lakes, and with an acidified cyanobacterium medium (pH 4.5) were conducted to test the growth of the isolated picocyanobacteria in various pH conditions. The experimental results of this study showed that some picocyanobacteria strains were acid tolerant, achieving higher growth rates and reaching higher maximum numbers in humic, naturally acidic waters rather than in alkaline waters. We show that despite a close phylogenetic relationship, strains of picocyanobacteria exhibit significant physiological and ecological diversity and that at least some picocyanobacteria have the evolutionary potential to cope with low pH. Characterization of the genetic basis of acid tolerance in picocyanobacteria is important to understand how these microorganisms function in aquatic ecosystems and how their communities may respond to a changing environment. 相似文献

A series of mutants derived from the temperate corynebacteriophages beta(tox+), gamma(tox-), and L(tox+) was isolated and characterized. In three-factor crosses between mutant beta phages the relative map order of the genetic markers determining extended host ranges (h and h') and loss of ability to lysogenize (c) was found to be h--c--h'. Recombination between markers was observed in matings between phage beta and the heteroimmune corynebacteriophages gamma and L. In such matings between heteroimmune phages the c markers of phages beta and gamma failed to segregate from the imm markers which determine the specificity of lysogenic immunity in these phages. The factor which directs the synthesis of diphtherial toxin during infection of appropriate corynebacterial hosts by toxinogenic corynebacteriophages is designated tox(+). It was possible to show that the tox(+) determinant of phage beta behaves as a single genetic element which occupies a position between the loci h and imm on the genetic map of this phage. Genetic recombination between mutants of phage beta occurred at very low frequencies in biparental matings performed by mixed infection of Corynebacterium diphtheriae C7(s)(-)(tox-). Considerably higher recombination frequencies were observed when lysogenic bacterial strains carrying one parental phage as prophage were induced by ultraviolet irradiation and then superinfected by the second parental phage. Maximal stimulation of genetic recombination between mutant beta phages was detected when superinfection followed ultraviolet irradiation of the lysogenic cells within a limited period of time. In matings between phages with incomplete genetic homology, the stimulation of recombination by ultraviolet radiation was much less effective. 相似文献
