Rectal and vaginal temperature responses of the Savanna Brown goat indigenous to the Nigerian guinea savanna were determined during the harmattan and the hot-dry season. Measurements were made at 06:00h and at 14:00h after 8h exposure to field conditions. At the 06:00h measurements during the harmattan, all animals were observed to shiver. A significant (P<0.01) positive correlation was found between rectal (Tre) and vaginal temperatures. During the harmattan, mean Tre was 38.2C at 06:00h and 39.7C at 14:00h; the mean difference, Tre was 1.5C. During the hot-dry season, Tre at 06:00h was 38.1C, and at 14:00h, 38.7; Tre was 0.6C. It is concluded that the harmattan is thermally more stressful than the hot-dry season and that passive thermolability may not be an important mechanism in the Savanna Brown goat in adaptation to thermal stress.  相似文献

Data were obtained from the research done in the Guinea Savanna (Zaria 11°11′N; 070 38′E) and Sudan Savanna (Maiduguri ?11°51′N; 13°15′E) regions of Nigeria, respectively on different cultural methods of Striga control and management. In the Guinea Savanna, trials on the effects of nitrogen on the response of resistant and susceptible upland rice varieties to Striga hermonthica infestation and the effect of resistant and susceptible varieties of maize and crop rotation on Striga infestation was carried out, while the effect of inter-cropping trap crop (Bambaranut) with resistant sorghum varieties on S. hermonthica was studied in the Sudan Savanna Zone of Nigeria. In the Guinea Savanna, it was observed that a combination of upland rice variety, Faro 40 and an application of 90 kg N/ha in the wet season and WAB 56-50 upland rice variety and 120 kg N/ha in the dry season, respectively reduced Striga infestation and produced maximum grain yield. Also, the growing of resistant variety of maize (Across 97ITZ comp. I-W) after 1 or 2 years' rotation with cowpea or soybean was observed not only to be effective in Striga control, but resulted in higher grain yield of maize. In the Sudan Savanna, the use of resistant varieties of sorghum, 1CSV1002 and 1CSV1007 intercropped with bambaranut significantly reduced Striga infestation, but the grain yield of the resistant varieties was low. From these studies, Faro 40 with 90 kg N/ha application rate and WAB56–50 with 120 kg N/ha were suitable for the management of Striga and for higher grain yield of upland rice in both wet and dry seasons, respectively, while Across 97ITZ comp. I-W, resistant maize variety and 1 or 2 years rotation with cowpea or soybean were also the best for the management of S. hermonthica and for higher maize yield in the Guinea Savanna zone. Further research needs to be carried out in the Sudan Savanna to select a high yielding resistant variety of sorghum which when intercropped with bambaranut will not only control Striga infestation but will also give high grain yield.  相似文献

Yields of groundnut, the traditional grain legume grown in central and southern Cameroon and in much of the humid zone of Central Africa, are generally low. Other food legumes may provide alternatives to groundnut. On-farm experiments examined the relative yields of up to 15 pigeonpea, 10 groundnut, 7 soybean, and 4 cowpea varieties over three growing seasons in four to six rural communities. Soil analytical values and rainfall data from all seasons were used as covariates in the analysis of variance. In the first two trials, variety-within-species interactions were significant (P<0.0001 and 0.04). Groundnut var. JL-24 yielded 60% more than local groundnuts in the first season of 2000, while soybean var. TGx1838-5E, local cowpea var. `Mefak' and pigeonpea var. ICEAP 00436 outyielded several other varieties of their respective species. Comparing these selected varieties over three seasons, significant species×community and species×season effects (P<0.0001) were observed. Covariate analysis showed that soybean yields increased with increasing soil Mg saturation and P levels. Groundnut yielded more in the first season of 2000 compared to the second seasons of 1999 and 2000 (average yields of 927 kg ha–1 vs. 422 and 522 kg ha–1, respectively). Improved yields were related to soil exchangeable Ca levels greater than 5 cmol(+) kg–1 in both second seasons, but not during the first season. Cowpea yields were superior in both second seasons. Pigeonpea yields were unrelated to soil factors, showing its wide adaptability to soil conditions. Pigeonpea, which matured in February during the dry season, was severely affected by the early cessation of rains in 2000. In 1999 yields averaged 820 kg ha–1 across communities. The results show that good food legume alternatives to groundnut exist, particularly for second season production. Species can be targeted to communities based on soil properties and season of production.  相似文献

Abstract. Savanna trees have a multitude of positive and negative effects on understorey grass production, but little is known about how these effects interact. We report on a fertilization and shading experiment carried out in a Tanzanian tropical dry savanna around Acacia tortilis trees. In two years of study there was no difference in grass production under tree canopies or in open grassland. Fertilization, however, indicate that trees do affect the nutrient limitation of the grass layer with an N‐limited system in open grassland to a P‐limited system under the trees. The N:P ratios of grass gave a reliable indication of the nature of nutrient limitation, but only when assessed at the end of the wet season. Mid‐wet season nutrient concentrations of grasses were higher under than outside the tree canopy, suggesting that factors other than nutrients limit grass production. A shading experiment indicated that light may be such a limiting factor during the wet season when water and nutrients are sufficiently available. However, in the dry season when water is scarce, the effect of shade on plant production became positive. We conclude that whether trees increase or decrease production of the herbaceous layer depends on how positive effects (increased soil fertility) and negative effects (shade and soil water availability) interact and that these interactions may significantly change between wet and dry seasons.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in agonistic behaviors and effects of familiarity on agonistic behaviors in wild-caught adult rat-like hamsters (Cricetulus triton) were observed in dyadic encounters in a neutral arena. The aggression of opposite- and same-sex encounters became higher or remained the same during the non-breeding season. This indicates that the hamsters were solitary during both seasons. Familiarity increased the aggression in male–male encounters and decreased the aggression in female–female encounters during both seasons. Familiarity also increased the aggression in female–male encounters during the non-breeding season and had no effect on the aggression in female–male encounters during the breeding season. These results may be related to the hamsters social structure. The more agonistic acts both male and female hamsters had, the more frequently they marked using flank glands during both seasons. This implies that flank gland marking can be used to advertise status and can be assessed by opponents to reduce the agonistic costs.  相似文献

Until the turn of the century, farmers in West Africa considered cotton to be the ‘white gold’ for their livelihoods. Large fluctuations in cotton prices have led farmers to innovate into other business including dairy. Yet the productivity of cows fed traditional diets is very poor, especially during the long dry season. This study combines earlier published results of farmer participatory experiments with simulation modelling to evaluate the lifetime productivity of cows under varying feeding strategies and the resulting economic performance at farm level. We compared the profitability of cotton production to the innovation of dairy. The results show that milk production of the West African Méré breed could be expanded if cows are supplemented and kept stall-fed during the dry season. This option seems to be profitable for better-off farmers, but whether dairy will replace (some of) the role of cotton as the white gold for these smallholder farmers will depend on the cross price elasticity of cotton and milk. Farmers may (partly) replace cotton production for fodder production to produce milk if the price of cotton remains poor (below US$0.35/kg) and the milk price relatively strong (higher than US$0.38/kg). Price ratios need to remain stable over several seasons given the investments required for a change in production strategy. Furthermore, farmers will only seize the opportunity to engage in dairy if marketing infrastructure and milk markets are further developed.  相似文献

Summary The outstanding effects of potassium deficiency on Japanese mint during winter and rainy seasons were marked accumulation of ammonia, amide and nitrate nitrogen with corresponding decrease in protain ntioen indicating arrested protein synthesis at ammonia- and amide formation stages as these fractions showed large proportion in the pool of soluble-N. The accumulation of soluble-nitrogen could be correlated with high respiration rate. Further, potassium-deficient plants had lowe value of rest-N and tootal N in winter and vice a versa in rainy season. In spite of an increased per cent essential oil content (ml/100 g dry weight), the total essential oil production (ml/plant) was low. In general, rainy season plants had higer percentage of essential oil and total oil/plant but showed lower values of all the forms of nitrogen.  相似文献

Aims

A pot study spanning four consecutive crop seasons was conducted to compare the effects of successive rice straw biochar/rice straw amendments on C sequestration and soil fertility in rice/wheat rotated paddy soil.

Methods

We adopted 4.5 t ha?1, 9.0 t ha?1 biochar and 3.75 t ha?1 straw for each crop season with an identical dose of NPK fertilizers.

Results

We found no major losses of biochar-C over the 2-year experimental period. Obvious reductions in CH4 emission were observed from rice seasons under the biochar application, despite the fact that the biochar brought more C into the soil than the straw. N2O emissions with biochar were similar to the controls without additives over the 2-year experimental period. Biochar application had positive effects on crop growth, along with positive effects on nutrient (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) uptake by crop plants and the availability of soil P, K, Ca and Mg. High levels of biochar application over the course of the crop rotation suppressed NH3 volatilization in the rice season, but stimulated it in the wheat season.

Conclusions

Converting straw to biochar followed by successive application to soil is viable for soil C sequestration, CH4 mitigation, improvements of soil and crop productivity. Biochar soil amendment influences NH3 volatilization differently in the flooded rice and upland wheat seasons, respectively.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to establish the effects of harmattan and hot-dry season on estrous cycle length, onset, and duration of estrus in Yankasa sheep indigenous to the Nigerian guinea savanna zone. Mean cycle lengths were 16.8 +/- 0.58 and 16.4 +/- 0.53 days during harmattan and hot-dry seasons, respectively; short cycles, 5-13 days, and long cycles, 21 to 30 days, were observed during both seasons. During the harmattan season, 57.1% of estrus began at night while 70% started at night during the hot-dry season. The duration of normal estrus observed during the harmattan, 33.6 +/- 5.87h, significantly decreased (P0.05) during the hot-dry season (24.0 +/- 5.45h). It is suggested that twice daily observation at 12-hour intervals will suffice to detect estrus in this breed of sheep.  相似文献

In the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem of East Africa, the migrating wildebeests (Connochaetes taurinus) response to food resource distribution and terrain complexity impacts their movement characteristics. This manifests in varying ways such as movement speed, direction, turning frequency, and moving distance. To investigate these characteristics, indices derived from vegetation quantity (normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI) and relief (slope) were used in our previous work to quantify the relationships between migration route location versus vegetation, relief complexity, and their combination. Least cost pathways determined using these indices were representative of approximate migration routes. The simulated routes were shown to be strongly influenced by vegetation during the dry season. However the impact of climatic change (rainfall) on route location was not investigated though known to influence vegetation recovery patterns. This paper specifically addresses the impact of climatic change on route location. The mean monthly rainfall data were used to classify the rainy and dry seasons in the Serengeti, the Western, and the Mara areas as normal, drier, or wetter than normal, over the 1986–1997 period. The classification is based on the mean monthly rainfall variability about the 11-year seasonal mean. Regression analysis showed strong linear relationships between rainfall and mean NDVI for each one of the three areas. The subsequent seasonal classification based on the corresponding habitat vegetation characteristics (NDVI) revealed the relative variation of vegetation with rainfall. Using the derived general categories, migration routes are then predicted for the various categories using a route attractivity index. The seasonal migration routes were shown to change depending on the relative abundance of the rainfall during the dry season. Dry season migration routes tended toward areas with better vegetation activity, i.e., those characterized by higher NDVI gradients. Our results showed that during the western trek, wetter dry seasons have the effect of delaying the herds movement northwestward. During the northern trek, wetter dry seasons have the effect of delaying the tendency to move westward. However the variation in rainfall conditions during the rainy and dry season had no significant influence on the southern trek route location. We assume that predicted routes based on average general category conditions for different years are representative of main migration route patterns for similar seasons, therefore they are well suited for approximate route prediction, if the climatic characteristics of the year are known.  相似文献

Two blocks, each consisting of twelve 0.25 m2permanent plots, were established in a community dominated by desert annuals inan area of Kuwait protected from grazing, and community attributes wereinvestigated over three growth seasons. A linear relationship was found betweenestimated desert annual cover and biomass production. Species frequency wasassessed by the number of 100 cm2 subplots occupied byaspecies in a block (block incidence). Over the three seasons,vegetation features varied considerably. The first season (spring 1997) wascharacterised by very sparse vegetation cover, low vegetation block incidence(sum of individual block incidences of each species present in a block) and lowspecies richness. The second season (spring 1998) had high vegetation cover,relatively low vegetation block incidence, but high species richness. In thethird season (spring 2000), vegetation cover was very sparse (as in 1997), butboth blocks had the highest vegetation block incidence of the three years andspecies richness was moderately high, although individual plants were verysmall. The growth period was much shorter in the very productive andspecies-rich 1998 season than in 2000. Fluctuations in biomass and speciesincidence coincided with pronounced variation in key meteorological variables,in particular the onset of the first rains, the amount of rainfall during thegrowing season and its temporal distribution. Species composition, however,appears mainly to be determined by the amount and possibly the timing of thefirst rainfalls of the season to trigger germination. There was little evidenceto suggest that particularly favourable or unfavourable microsites existed inplots for more than one vegetation period, either for individual species or fordiversity in general. Despite substantial between-season fluctuations inincidence, the relative abundances of the more frequent species to each otherremained broadly similar over the three seasons, with Plantagoboissieri being the predominant species and accounting for thelargest proportion of biomass.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the adaptability of Saanen and ½Saanen?×?½Anglo-Nubian (½S½AN) goats bred in tropical climates. The study included 30 goats, 15 Saanen and 15 ½S½AN. The data was collected during the rainy and dry seasons. During the whole experimental period, the environment variables were recorded, as well as rectal temperature (RT), superficial temperature (ST), respiratory rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) and milk production (MP). The adaptability coefficient (AC) was calculated for both genotypes. The averages were evaluated by ANOVA at 5 % probability. There was a genotype and period of year effect, as well as the interaction genotype?×?period of year. Over the period 2002–2014, air temperature significantly increased regionally for Bratislava. However, no significant shifts have been observed in other meteorological parameters examined. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of significant temperature trends on timing, duration and intensity of Alternaria, Epicoccum and Stemphylium spore seasons. Aerobiological monitoring was conducted using a Burkard 7-day volumetric spore trap. Mann–Kendall tau test was used to determine trends in spore seasons characteristics, whereas Spearman’s correlation coefficients were calculated to establish the relationships between temperature and spore season time series. Spore seasons of analysed taxa changed throughout the years of study. Alternaria spore season now starts earlier, ends later and lasts longer. Start, end and peak dates as well as duration of Alternaria spore seasons were significantly correlated with recorded increases in winter temperatures. Despite significant lengthening of Alternaria spore seasons, the lack of rising trend in its spore season index has been registered. This phenomenon could be partly explained by the reduction in the source vegetation due to drop of agricultural land use areas in Bratislava. In contrast, the intensity of Stemphylium spore seasons significantly increased during the study period and was correlated with recorded increases in summer–autumn temperatures. Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that changes in selected fungal spore season patterns in Bratislava (earlier start date, later end date and longer duration of Alternaria spore seasons and higher Stemphylium spore season indexes) might be caused by the recorded local change in air temperature.  相似文献

Two annual breeding seasons are indicated for populations of T. nilotica in the White Nile: a major autumnal season (mid-July–September) coinciding with the annual rainfall and a smaller back-up season in February–March. During these seasons reproducing females constituted 80% and 40% of the total population of mature females compared to 10–12% in the intervening summer period. Enhanced gonadal development, fecundity and GSI values characterized the breeding seasons. Gonadal maturation proceeded uninterruptedly even during the summer and repeated fractional spawning is suggested for this species within and beyond the breeding seasons. Most of the spring breeders were either very young or relatively old fish and most medium-sized females bred in the main autumnal season. Older fish were less fecund (by 70–75%) compared to younger fish. In the latter, fecundity increased progressively with body growth (r2 = 0.732; p<0.001); the proportionality was lost in medium-sized fish and in older females (0.9–1.5 kg) fecundity correlated negatively with increased body size.  相似文献

Experiments were performed with the aim of investigating the effect of season on haematological parameters and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) of pigs. A total of 23 local pigs including males, non-pregnant and non-nursing females, aged 9 to 12 months were used for the study, ten animals were used during the hot-dry season and thirteen during the harmattan season. Blood sample was taken from each animal for the determination of EOF and other haematological parameters as well as total protein. The PCV value of 39.7±1.9 % obtained during the hot-dry season was significantly higher than 32.00 ± 0.9 % obtained during the harmattan season. Total leucocyte count of 18,836.5±1727.1 obtained during the harmattan season was higher than the value 15,920.00±1119.1 recorded during the hot-dry season. The neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio value was significantly higher during the harmattan season, with a value of 0.61±0.0 than the recorded value of 0.43±0.0 during the hot-dry season. The percentage haemolysis values obtained during the harmattan season at NaCl concentration of 0.5-0.9 % with a value of 92.03±0.02 % respectively were significantly higher than those recorded during the hot-dry season. In conclusion, the haematological values showed that harmattan season was more stressful to pigs than the hot-dry season in the Northern Guinea Savanna zone of Nigeria.  相似文献

Healthy and cactus X virus-infected Agave sisalana plants werecollected during the dry and rainy seasons in two contrastingsavanna sites. At site 1, the soil water content showed no seasonalvariations, but at site 2 it was much lower during the dry seasonthan in the rainy season. When compared to healthy plants (HP),virus infection reduced the total leaf area, the of titratableacidity and the water content of the plants, regardless of theseason. In virus-infected plants at site 1 (VIP-1) the magnitudeof the effect elicited by the virus did not differ between seasons,whereas, in virusinfected plants at site 2 (VIP-2) the deleteriouseffect of the virus was more pronounced during the dry season.In the dry season, VIP-1 and VIP-2 accumulated more fructansalong the diurnal cycle and had higher net diurnal carbon gainthan HP, with higher values in VIP-2. With the onset of rainthe total leaf area of VIP-2 increased and the of titratableacidity and water content reached the values seen in VIP-1.During the rainy season there was less accumulation of fructansand the net diurnal carbon gain was lower in both VIP-1 andVIP-2 compared with HP, with VIP-2 showing the lower values.In VIP-1 and VIP-2 there was also a marked reduction in thediurnal accumulation of -amino-N at both seasons. The data obtainedin young developing leaves allowed us to discuss the presentdata in terms of alterations in the plants sink/source ratiocaused by drought and cactus X virus infection. Agricultural development projects in the fertile and most well-watered areas of arid and semiarid Africa usually deny access to nomadic pastoralists whose production system and livelihood depend upon such areas in the dry season and during frequent droughts. The result can be degradation of range resources through overgrazing, and greater vulnerability of pastoralists. Recent calls for compatible land use schemes or nonexclusionary agricultural development projects in the context of pastoralist transhumance, suggest allowing pastoralists structured access to project sites in the dry season in order to utilize forage and water supplies. This paper examines the capacity of an irrigation scheme to support the seasonal influx of transhumant livestock in dry seasons of varying severity. The livestock carrying capacity of the existing mosaic of land use patterns and practices is used in the determination of the proportional areas of land use needed to absorb large seasonal concentrations of livestock.  相似文献

Studies of carrion fauna have increased in Brazil and have contributed to the knowledge of this fauna in the national territory. Brazil has continental dimensions and presents various biomes in its territorial area. Most of the carrion fauna have seldom been studied, and this is especially true for the Savanna or “Cerrado.” The present research examined the fauna visiting carrion in two environments and two seasons in a rural area situated in a region of Cerrado in southeastern Brazil. The two environments studied were a pasture and a fragment of semi-deciduous forest. Samples were collected during the dry and humid seasons of the year. The study identified the diversity and relative abundance of species attracted to pig carcasses (Sus scrofa L.) exposed in each environment and season. Eight pig carcasses (10 ± 1 kg) were placed in traps, and adult insects attracted to the traps were collected during the decay of the carcasses. A total of 92,489 insects were collected during the experiments. The Diptera was the most frequent order (92.2%) represented by 27 families and at least 124 species. This was followed by Coleoptera (4.4%) represented by 14 families and at least 65 species. Sarcophagidae had the greatest diversity of species, followed by Muscidae and Calliphoridae. Several species were collected only during a specific period of the year or in a single environment. The results are important from an ecological point of view and for Medico-Legal Forensic Entomology.  相似文献

In 1995–1996 a study of pollen concentrations of Corylus, Alnus and Fraxinus was performed at seven sites in regions of different climatic and natural conditions. The aim of the study was to determine whether regional differences in the course and duration of pollen seasons occur in Poland. The study was performed using a volumetric method. Several phases during the pollen season were defined for each taxon (1, 2.5, 5, 25, 50, 75, 95, 97.5, 99% of annual total) and duration of the pollen seasons was calculated using 98 and 90% methods. Dynamics and duration of the pollen seasons and a start of particular phases of the season were compared among sites. On the basis of the preliminary analysis it could be supposed that regional differences were most evident in the case of Corylus. The pollen season of this taxon started the earliest in Pozna where thermal conditions were most favourable and the latest in Gdask, a place at the furthest to the north ( 2, 0.05). In montane regions (Zakopane, Rabka) last phases of the season were significant extended ( 2, 0.05). Probably it results from secondary pollen deposition and a long-distance transport by montane wind. In case of Fraxinus the significant regional differences in the start of the pollen season were not found. The study supported that weather conditions have the substantial influence on the start of consecutive phases of the pollen season.  相似文献

Daily milk production figures for 3 dairy farms having some irrigated feed and located in a semi-arid climate in New South Wales, Australia, were collected for a 2-year period. The possible short-term effects of high temperatures on production were examined by aggregating data for the 3 farms and comparing production on hot days (maximum temperatures above 27°C) with that on other days. No statistically significant differences were observed between production on hot days and other days, or between production on days having varying heat intensities above the 27°C threshold. Neither prolonged periods of high temperatures nor the rapid onset of hot weather resulted in consistent declines in farm production. Even though the farm data used were affected by uncontrolled variables, the temperature conditions examined did not constitute the dominant factor affecting short-term production fluctuations. Feed of adequate quality and quantity, and acclimatization of cows to temperatures that were often not greatly above the 27°C threshold, probably contributed to the lack of a significant decline in production in association with high temperatures.  相似文献
