Knowledge of the interactions between organisms within trophic groups is important for an understanding of the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. We hypothesised that interactions between bacterivorous nematodes of different life history strategies would affect nematode population development, bacterial community composition and activity, resulting in increased N mineralization. A microcosm experiment was conducted using three nematode species (Bursilla monhystera, Acrobeloides nanus and Plectus parvus). All the nematode species interacted with each other, but the nature and effects of these interactions depended on the specific species combination. The interaction between B. monhystera and A. nanus was asymmetrically competitive (0,–), whereas that between B. monhystera and P. parvus, and also A. nanus and P. parvus was contramensal (+, –). The interaction that affected microcosm properties the most was the interaction between B. monhystera and P. parvus. This interaction affected the bacterial community composition, increased the bacterial biomass and increased soil N mineralization. B. monhystera and P. parvus have the most different life history strategies, whereas A. nanus has a life history strategy intermediate to those of B. monhystera and P. parvus. We suggest that the difference in life history strategies between species of the same trophic group is of importance for their communal effect on soil ecosystem processes. Our results support the idiosyncrasy hypothesis on the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

The growth and ascocarp formation of Aigialus parvus, Lignincola laevis and Verruculina enalia in single and mixed cultures on wood of Avicennia alba, Bruguiera cylindrica and Rhizophora apiculata was studied. In pure cultures, these fungi grew well on all three species of wood. Except for Aigialus parvus on B. cylindrica, all three fungi also formed abundant ascocarps. The time needed for ascocarp formation after inoculation ranged from six to eight weeks for L. laevis on all wood species, and for V. enalia on Avicennia alba; to ten weeks for V. enalia on B. cylindrica and R. apiculata; and 12 weeks for Aigialus parvus on Avicennia alba and R. apiculata.Mixed cultures involving two or three of the test fungi delayed the onset of sporulation and affected the abundance of ascocarps formed. Sporulation by Aigialus parvus on Avicennia alba and R. apiculata was markedly reduced by L. laevis alone or in combination with V. enalia. Likewise, sporulation by L. laevis was suppressed by Aigialus parvus and/or V. enalia. In contrast, the presence of L. laevis enhanced ascocarp formation by V. enalia on all types of wood. These observations suggest the presence of interference competition among the test fungi.  相似文献

The Australian alpine region harbours a wide range of species, many of which are endemic and of high conservation value. Among these species, the endangered mountain pygmy‐possum, Burramys parvus, is of particular interest because this specialized marsupial is highly sensitive to extreme temperatures. The selection of microhabitats by B. parvus is a critical but poorly understood element of its biological characteristics. To understand the microhabitat preferences of B. parvus, we performed detailed investigations of the thermal properties of alpine boulder fields. The selection of a preferred microclimate was demonstrated by comparing temperatures and environmental conditions in preferred and non‐preferred boulder fields. The variability of the daily temperature depended on the depth at which measurements were made within the boulder fields. Temperatures were more stable as depth increased. The results suggest that B. parvus prefers to occupy deep boulder fields at high elevations with good rock structure (small rock and cavity size with multiple layers) and long snow duration because these boulder fields can provide a favourable microclimate. At 1 m depth, the maximum temperatures in the hottest part of the year were 1.27°C cooler in preferred compared to non‐preferred boulder fields. In the coldest part of the year, immediately following the melting of persistent snow cover, the minimum temperatures at a depth of 1 m were 1.67°C warmer in preferred compared to non‐preferred boulder fields. On average, the snow duration was 27 days greater in the boulder fields preferred by B. parvus than in non‐preferred boulder fields. Our results emphasize the value of boulder field microhabitats as thermal refuges for small mammals in rocky habitats within alpine environments in the light of continuing habitat loss and climate change.  相似文献

Glucuronoxylan (GX), an important component of hemicellulose in the cell wall, appears to affect aluminium (Al) sensitivity in plants. To investigate the role of GX in cell‐wall‐localized xylan, we examined the Arabidopsis thaliana parvus mutant in detail. This mutant lacks α‐D‐glucuronic acid (GlcA) side chains in GX and has greater resistance to Al stress than wild‐type (WT) plants. The parvus mutant accumulated lower levels of Al in its roots and cell walls than WT despite having cell wall pectin content and pectin methylesterase (PME) activity similar to those of WT. Our results suggest that the altered properties of hemicellulose in the mutant contribute to its decreased Al accumulation. Although we observed almost no differences in hemicellulose content between parvus and WT under control conditions, less Al was retained in parvus hemicellulose than in WT. This observation is consistent with the finding that GlcA substitutions in WT GX, but not mutant GX, were increased under Al stress. Taken together, these results suggest that the modulation of GlcA levels in GX affects Al resistance by influencing the Al binding capacity of the root cell wall in Arabidopsis.  相似文献

Heteronomous hyperparasitoids are parasitic wasps with sex‐related host relationships that are unique to a group of genera in the chalcidoid family Aphelinidae. Females are primary parasitoids of various sedentary bugs (mainly, scale insects, mealy bugs, and whiteflies). Males, in contrast, are hyperparasitic, and they frequently develop at the expense of female conspecifics. Alloparasitoids constitute a special category of heteronomous hyperparasitoids, for their males never develop through female conspecifics. The existence of alloparasitic host relationships and the utility of the category ‘alloparasitoid’ have both been questioned. Here, we present results that confirm the existence of the alloparasitic way of life among heteronomous aphelinids. We investigated an undescribed species of Coccophagus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), an Australian parasitoid that attacks the introduced lantana mealy bug, Phenacoccus parvus Morrison (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), in Queensland. A year‐long field survey regularly returned large numbers of female Coccophagus spec. near gurneyi individuals from P. parvus (total n = 4212), but only few males (n = 11). Males emerged from samples only when the encyrtid parasitoid Anagyrus diversicornis (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was present in samples in relatively high numbers. Laboratory oviposition tests confirmed that A. diversicornis is a male host and showed that males do not develop at the expense of conspecific females. Other studies show that males are attracted in numbers to virgin females held in cages above mealy bug‐infested Lantana montevidensis (Spreng.) Briq. (Verbenaceae) in the field, demonstrating that they are common in the population as a whole. This confirms that the males need hosts other than conspecific females and that their usual hosts are present outside of the lantana/P. parvus system. The implications of these results for developing a realistic classification of heteronomous host relationships are discussed.  相似文献

Population studies of three aquatic gastropods in an intermittent backwater   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
Summary Three snail populations of an intermittent backwater were studied over a 20-month period, and estimates were made of rate of population change, mean biomass, annual and summer net production, and survival under conditions of little standing water. Lymnaea palustris and Physa integra populations were essentially univoltine, while G. parvus appeared to produce several generations during the year. L. palustris formed a protective epiphragm and was apparently better suited to recurrent dry periods than either G. parvus or P. integra, the latter population being maintained through immigration from the stream population. The population density of G. parvus was usually well below, and more aggregated, than the other two species, and there was considerable sampling error associated with its estimated population parameters. The estimated annual production rates for L. palustris and P. integra were 2.18 g/m2 and 1.59 g/m2, respectively, and these two species accounted for about 98% of the total gastropod production. About 75.9% and 66.5% of the L. palustris and P. integra production, respectively, occurred between June and November. Summer turnover ratios (ratio of production to mean standing crop) in 1969 were 4.69 for L. palustris and 2.94 for P. integra. An extended dry period early in the summer of 1970 reduced total snail production to about 18–24% that of the previous season, although summer turnover ratios were fairly consistent.  相似文献

Three impressions of snipe flies from the uppermost Middle Jurassic or lowermost Upper Jurassic Daohugou Formation in northeastern China are described as Protorhagio parvus sp. nov. and Lithorhagio megalocephalus get. et sp. nov. Protorhagio parvus is the first record of the genus Protorhagio Rohdendorf, 1938 outside the Karatau-Mikhailovka locality (Kazakhstan), which has implications for biostratigraphic correlation of the formations, in which they are found. The taxonomic position of Lithorhagio gen. nov. is discussed. Although Orsobrachyceron Ren, 1998 demonstrates some resemblance in form to the new genus, it probably belongs to Xylomyidae rather than Rhagionidae.  相似文献

A partial skeleton of a shark was found in the Frauenweiler clay pit near Rauenberg (Oligocene, Rupelian; Baden-Württemberg, S. Germany). The shark is identified as Cetorhinus parvus Leriche 1910. One tooth, vertebrae, dermal denticles and most of the filter apparatus of the juvenile specimen are described and illustrated. A terminology is introduced for the gill raker elements of the genus Cetorhinus to compare C. parvus and C. maximus.  相似文献

1. Four gastropods common in Wisconsin lakes, Amnicola limosa, Gyraulus parvus, Physella gyrina and Helisoma anceps, were exposed to predation by three crayfish congeners, Orconectes rusticus, O. propinquus and O. virilis in the laboratory to determine prey preference. 2. There were no differences in prey choice among the crayfish congeners, but there were clear differences in electivity for the different snail prey. 3. Crayfish had higher electivities for the thin-shelled, plano-spiral pulmonate Gyraulus parvus, despite its lower abundance in samples, than the thicker-shelled prosobranch Amnicola limosa. Electivity for another plano-spiral pulmonate, Helisoma anceps, was low, evidently because of its relatively thick shell and larger size. Amnicola limosa and the thin-shelled pulmonate Physella gyrina (present at roughly the same relative abundance as Gyraulus parvus) were neither selected nor avoided. 4. Crayfish electivity appears to be a function of the resistance of shells to chipping by crayfish mandibles. Although different species are preferred, this is similar to the previously described selection of thin-shelled species by sunfish.  相似文献

A new late Hemphillian (late Miocene) rodent assemblage is reported from Zwiebel Channel, a channel cut into underlying Ash Hollow Miocene sediments along Sand Draw, Brown County, Nebraska. This locality extends the temporal range of rodent history in the Sand Draw area. A new biostratigraphic hypothesis proposes that previously described assemblages with Ogmodontomys are older than those with Ophiomys, as is the case in the Meade Basin of southwestern Kansas. Consequently, two Pliocene temporal zones are recognised. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of Ophiomys, rodent biostratigraphy, and paleomagnetic profiles, Sand Draw assemblages with Ogmodontomys are considered to have been deposited about 3.0–2.8 Ma, while those with Ophiomys were laid down between about 2.8–2.5 Ma. The 1.6 Ma date previously suggested for Ophiomys parvus from Froman Ferry, Idaho is probably too young; it is more likely that O. parvus became extinct in Idaho prior to the North American Microtus immigration event at about 2.0 Ma, inhabiting the Snake River basin until around 2.2 Ma.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were estimated for three montane fish species Acrossocheilus fasciatus (Steindachner, 1892), Sarcocheilichthys parvus (Nichols, 1930) and Vanmanenia stenosoma (Boulenger, 1901) from upper Chang River, a main tributary of the Poyang Lake, China. Fish specimens were collected using benthic fyke nets (0.4 × 0.4 × 15 m; mouth opening: 10 × 10 cm; mesh size: 0.5 cm) and electrofishing equipment (12 V) from September 2017 to July 2018 seasonally. New maximum total lengths were recorded for S. parvus and V. stenosoma.  相似文献

Examination was made on the morphological and cultural characteristics of the lutease-producing Streptomyces strain No. OP-4-5 isolated from a dust. The strain was identified as Streptomyces griseus. In addition, it was proved that 2 strains of Streptomyces griseus produce lutease in a test for lutease production in Streptomyces species. Streptomyces parvus and Streptomyces niveoruber also produce the same enzyme. However, production of the lutease by these 4 strains was less than that of produced by Streptomyces griseus strain No. OP-4-5 which was isolated by the authors.  相似文献

Three species of unionid mussels (Pyganodon grandis, Lampsilis siliquoidea, and Toxolasma parvus) were preyed on by muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) that left shell remains at feeding sites (middens) along the shore of Lake LaSalle (West) in western New York State, USA. Mussels became established within five years of the construction of this small artificial lake, and individuals of all three species have grown rapidly to large size. The abundance of prey in middens in 1988–1990 and a marked decline in subsequently deposited shells indicate how dramatically muskrats had exploited this food source. They consumed > 2700 individuals of P. grandis (by far the most common prey item) through 1990, yet only 20 newly deposited shells were found in 1993. At a midden where prey depletion was directly catalogued during 1988, larger specimens of P. grandis were consumed first, suggesting size selection. L. siliquoidea has been least affected by predation, and was the mussel most often found alive in the littoral zone. No live T. parvus were ever collected, and this species is known only from middens. Complete collections of shell remains from the shoreline through 1999 suggest that the mussel population may be recovering slowly. Muskrat predation may be more important in influencing mussel population structure than previously realized, and the effects can be dramatic spatially and temporally.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration and gut pigment rhythm of calanoid copepods were studied in the highly eutrophic waters of Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong in summer between July 30 and August l, 1991 and in winter between January 24 and 25, 1992. Paracalanus parvus and P. crassirostris showed neither diel vertical migration nor diel gut pigment rhythm during the summer study. Acartia erythraea and Eucalanus subcrassus exhibited prominent diel vertical migration and diel gut pigment rhythm. Diel changes in gut pigment content of surface dwelling individuals and increase of gut pigment content before the onset of nocturnal upward migration suggest that gut pigment rhythm in E. subcrassus was not the result of animals moving in and out of a food-rich surface layer. During the winter study, the harbour was affected by a bloom of Noctiluca scintillans. P. parvus and P. crassirostris resided in deeper waters presumably to avoid the dense populations of N. scintillans at the surface. P. crassirostris remained non-migratory during the winter study. There was a nocturnal increase in the number of P. parvus in the surface waters, although no diel change in the mean depth of the population was observed. Both Paracalanus species showed diel gut pigment rhythm. The presence of diel gut pigment rhythm in the non-migratory P. crassirostris during the winter study suggested the presence of an independent feeding rhythm.  相似文献

Summary The Mountain Pygmy‐possum Burramys parvus has been listed as an endangered species across its range in the alpine and subalpine areas of New South Wales and Victoria. This study reports on the occurrence of the species in an artificial habitat, spoil dumps that were created in the 1950s as a result of the construction of underground tunnels associated with the Snowy Hydro‐electric Scheme. Thirty‐four B. parvus were captured in 1065 trapnights on spoil dumps in Happy Jacks Creek valley, in northern Kosciuszko National Park in October and November 2011. In January 2012, 22 individuals were captured in 360 trapnights on a spoil dump at Guthega Adit Camp in southern Kosciuszko National Park. Seven radio‐collared individuals tracked in Happy Jacks Creek valley resulted in the location of 5 day shelters in spoil dump habitat, including individuals that were originally trapped in nearby natural habitat. This study indicates that there may be opportunity to create further artificial habitat on sites not currently used by this highly restricted species.  相似文献

Knowledge of the conodont skeleton, in terms of the morphology of the elements and the positions they occupy, provides the foundation for understanding of homology, taxonomy and evolutionary relationships in conodonts. This knowledge also underpins analyses of conodont functional morphology and feeding. Direct evidence of skeletal anatomy and apparatus architecture comes from natural assemblages: fossils that preserve together the articulated remains of the conodont apparatus, either collapsed onto a bedding plane or as clusters of elements in which juxtaposed and overlapping elements have been fused together by diagenetic minerals. Here we describe six clusters of the biostratigraphically important conodont Hindeodus parvus from the Lower Triassic Shangsi section, Sichuan Province, South China. Five of these clusters represent the partial remains of articulated skeletons, providing direct evidence of the number and arrangement of elements in the apparatus. Combined with data from previously published natural assemblages this provides a test of the hypothesis that Triassic conodonts had a reduced dentition. Hindeodus parvus possessed a complete raptorial array of two M and nine S elements (unpaired S0; symmetrically paired S1, S2, S3, S4); the paired P1 locations were occupied by carminiscaphate elements, but the apparatus lacked P2 elements. This is consistent with broader evidence for a particularly high degree of integration and constraint operating on the S–M array of morphologically complex conodonts, leading to conserved architecture of the array over a period of more than 250 million years. The loss of elements from the P domain implies a change in food processing ability and, given the predominance of data from P elements in conodont taxonomy and biostratigraphy, the hypothesis of element loss from the P domain has significant implications for the broader understanding of conodont diversity and evolutionary patterns.  相似文献

A population of mountain pygmy‐possums Burramys parvus was studied at the Mount Blue Cow ski resort in Kosciuszko National Park between 1986 and 1989. Forty‐eight individuals were radiotracked during the snow‐free months and 21 individuals were tracked during winter over the 3 years of study. Trapping and radiotracking showed that the density, population structure, movements and home range sizes of B. parvus on Mount Blue Cow were strongly correlated with elevation and changed with the season. Female densities were greatest in habitats characterized by deep boulderfields, at high elevations with an abundance of Bogong moths. Males visited the areas where females were located to breed in November–December and then by February, the majority migrated to lower elevations or north and westerly aspects. Females that nested at lower elevations also visited high‐elevation habitats to access the high concentrations of Bogong moths, which were the main food source in summer. A high proportion of the juvenile males and some juvenile females dispersed to lower elevations in March and April. The resulting sexual segregation during autumn and winter may be a result of female aggression or scramble competition, but is also explainable by differences in energy requirements, seed availability and hibernation strategies between the sexes. The extraordinarily large nightly and seasonal movements between habitat patches of up to 2 km for females and 3 km for males, sexual segregation and the use of different hibernation sites have important implications for the management of this species. These include the need for movement and dispersal corridors and the conservation of boulder‐heath habitats outside the main boulderfields.  相似文献

Endophytic bacteria live inside plant tissues without causing disease and not only promote plant growth but can also protect plants against plant pathogens. During 2010–2011 crop years, some endophytic bacteria were collected and are then biochemically and molecularly identified (16srRNA) from bean farms of East Azarbaijan, Iran. Among these bacteria isolates, four isolates from Bacillus genera and four isolates from Streptomyces genera were selected for evaluation of their ability for biocontrol of Sclerotium rolfsii in laboratory and glasshouse conditions. Except one isolate named Streptomyces parvus, the rest of isolates could significantly inhibit mycelial growth in dual culture on PDA medium. All seven selected isolates showed significant inhibition in disease treatments in glasshouse experiments. Biological traits, such as length, wet and dry weight of roots and stems in endophytic bacterial treatment showed no differences with healthy control.  相似文献

Stable carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen isotopes have been used to infer aspects of species ecology and environment in both modern ecosystems and the fossil record. Compared to large mammals, stable isotopic studies of small‐mammal ecology are limited; however, high species and ecological diversity within small mammals presents several advantages for quantifying resource use and organism–environment interactions using stable isotopes over various spatial and temporal scales. We analyzed the isotopic composition of hair from two heteromyid rodent species, Dipodomys ordii and Perognathus parvus, from localities across western North America in order to characterize dietary variation in relation to vegetation and climatic gradients. Significant correlations between the carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of these species and several climatic variables imply that seasonal temperature and precipitation control the composition and distribution of dietary resources (grass seeds). Our results also suggest a moisture influence on the nitrogen isotopic composition (δ15N) of heteromyid diets. Population‐ and species‐level variation in δ13C and δ15N values record fine‐scale habitat heterogeneity and significant differences in resource use between species. Using classification and regression‐tree techniques, we modeled the geographic variation in heteromyid δ13Cdiet values based on 10 climatic variables and generated an isotope landscape model (‘isoscape’). The isoscape predictions for δ13Cdiet differ from expectations based on observed C4 distributions and instead indicate that D. ordii and P. parvus record seasonally abundant grass resources, with additional model deviations potentially attributed to geographic variation in dietary selection. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of D. ordii is enriched relative to local meteoric water and suggests that individuals rely on highly evaporated water sources, such as seed moisture. Based on the climatic influences on vegetation and diet documented in this study, the isotopic composition of small mammals has high potential for recording ecological responses to environmental changes over short and long time scales.  相似文献

Sympodiomyces gen. n. is described with the single speciesSympodiomyces parvus sp. n. The distinguishing characteristic of this yeast-like genus is the method of asexual reproduction: conidia are produced on a conidiophore that develops sympodially. A sexual stage has not been observed, therefore the genus is placed among the Fungi Imperfecti, family Cryptococcaceae.Contribution No. 1364 from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, Florida. The authors gratefully acknowledge Dr. Jan Kohlmeyer, Univ. of North Carolina, Morehead City, North Carolina; Dr. R.
