Much less is known about the behaviour of female beaugregory damselfish than about males of the species. This study was initiated to determine behavioural patterns and interactions of female beaugregories on the back reef of Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, North shore of Jamaica. Females fed, patrolled, and chased intruders in a significantly larger area and ate significantly more per 15-min observation period than did males. Males spent significantly more time patrolling their territories and chased significantly more total intruders than did females. However, this difference in total chases comes from the fact that males chased the bluehead wrasse, an egg predator, significantly more often than did females while all other species of intruder were chased the same by both sexes. The distance that females travelled from their homesite to court was significantly positively correlated to female body length. This increased distance travelled may relate to mate assessment. Female beaugregory damselfish may be able to be more selective in their choice of mate with increased size and distance travelled.  相似文献

We developed a set of eight polymorphic microsatellite loci for pronghorn, Antilocapra americana. We screened 233 individuals from the National Bison Range in Moiese, MT, and found allele numbers from three to 11 and heterozygosity levels ranging from 0.142 to 0.807. These results suggest that these loci will be useful in paternity analysis and basic population genetics applications.  相似文献

The spiny damselfish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, is widely distributed throughout the Indo‐Australian archipelago. However, this species lacks a larval dispersal stage and shows genetic differentiation between populations from closely spaced reefs. To investigate the dispersal strategy of this unique species, we used microsatellite markers to determine genetic relatedness at five dispersal scales: within broods of juveniles, between adults within a collection site (~30 m2), between sites on single reefs, between nearby reefs in a reef cluster, and between reef clusters. We sampled broods of juveniles and adults from seven reefs in the Capricorn‐Bunker and Swain groups of the Great Barrier Reef. We found that extra‐pair mating is rare and juveniles remain with their parents until fledged. Adults from single sites are less related than broods but more related than expected by chance. However, there is no evidence of inbreeding suggesting the existence of assortative mating and/or adult migration. Genetic differences were found between all of the reefs tested except between Heron and Sykes reefs, which are separated only by a 2‐km area of shallow water (less than 10 m). There was a strong correlation between genetic distance, geographical distance and water depth. Apparently, under present‐day conditions spiny damselfish populations are connected only between sites of shallow water, through dispersal of adults over short distances. Assuming that dispersal behaviour has not changed, the broad distribution of A. polyacanthus as a species is likely based on historical colonization patterns when reefs were connected by shallow water at times of lower sea levels.  相似文献

Settlement‐stage damselfish (Pomacentridae) larvae of 13 species in seven genera were obtained from light traps at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Behaviour, observed in situ by SCUBA divers, of 245 larvae (6–13 mm, LS; 5–60 individuals per species) released individually within a few m of reefs during the day differed markedly among species. From 0–28% (range among 13 species) of individuals of each species swam away from the adjacent reefs without swimming to the reefs. Of those that swam to a reef, 0–75% settled. For three species, sufficient data were available to test the hypothesis that these percentages did not differ amongst reefs: the hypothesis was rejected in one species. From 0–75% of larvae that reached the reef were eaten, 0–63% subsequently left the reef and 0–60% were still swimming over the reef at the end of the observation period. Swimming speeds of all but one species were greater when swimming away from the reef than toward it. Most species exceeded average current speeds when swimming away from reefs, but not when swimming toward and over them. Average swimming depths were in the upper half of the water column for most species, and were somewhat greater where the water depths were greater. The time the larvae swam over the reef before settling and the distance swum varied greatly among species from 0 to a mean of 5.5 min and 43 m. Settlement habitats chosen differed amongst species, and in some species, they were very specific. Average settlement depth varied among species from 6–13.5 m. In one species, settlement depth varied between reefs. About half of the 53 observed interactions between larvae and reef resident fishes were predation attempts: fishes of eight species (six families) attacked larvae. The other interactions were aggressive approaches by 11 species of resident fishes, all but one of which were pomacentrids. Many of these aggressive interactions discouraged settlement attempts. Larvae of some species experienced no predatory or aggressive interactions, whereas in other species interactions averaged >0.6 per released larva. Species that swam more‐or‐less directly to settlement sites near the reef edge experienced more interactions. Even within the same family, settlement behaviour differed among species in nearly all measures.  相似文献

The extent of dispersal between populations of Caribbean reef fish remains largely unknown. Resolution of this issue is critical for managing populations and designing marine reserves. As part of a larger study of reef fish dispersal, we developed and characterized 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus), an abundant reef fish found throughout the Caribbean. These loci will be useful for population genetic and relatedness studies of this species and also appear to be useful in other Caribbean members of the Pomacentridae.  相似文献

Proper management of reef areas depends greatly on understanding the degree of dispersal of each species involved. The larvae of most reef fishes disperse from the natal reef before or soon after hatching and return to the reef environment after a pre‐settlement stage of several days to weeks. We show that nuclear DNA extracted from faeces of free living bonobos (Pan paniscus) can be used to amplify hypervariable simple sequence repeats, which can be used for paternity analysis and kinship studies. Of 130 DNA extractions of samples from 33 different animals, about two-thirds yielded PCR products at the first attempt. For several samples only a second extraction resulted in positive amplifications. Consistency tests revealed that in some cases only one of the two alleles was amplified. Presumably this is due to a very limited amount of bonobo DNA in the sample and we suggest therefore that a sample found to be homozygous at a given locus should be typed repeatedly for verification.  相似文献

A long-standing challenge in studies of seed dispersal by animal frugivores has been the characterization of the spatial relationships between dispersed seeds and the maternal plants, i.e. the seed shadow. The difficulties to track unambiguously the origin of frugivore-dispersed seeds in natural communities has been considered an unavoidable limitation of the research field and precluded a robust analysis of the direct consequences of zoochory. Here we report that the multilocus genotype at simple sequence repeat (SSR; microsatellite) loci of the woody endocarp, a tissue of maternal origin, provides an unequivocal genetic fingerprint of the source tree. By comparing the endocarp genotype against the complete set of genotypes of reproductive trees in the population, we could unambiguously identify the source tree for 82.1% of the seeds collected in seed traps and hypothesize that the remaining 17.9% of sampled seeds come from other populations. Identification of the source tree for Prunus mahaleb seeds dispersed by frugivores revealed a marked heterogeneity in the genetic composition of the seed rain in different microhabitats, with a range of 1-5 distinct maternal trees contributing seeds to a particular landscape patch. Within-population dispersal distances ranged between 0 and 316 m, with up to 62% of the seeds delivered within 15 m of the source trees. Long distance dispersal events, detected by the exclusion of all reproductive trees in the population, accounted for up to 17.9% of the seeds sampled. Our results indicate strong distance limitation of seed delivery combined with infrequent long-distance dispersal events, extreme heterogeneity in the landscape pattern of genetic makeup, and a marked mosaic of multiple parentage for the seeds delivered to a particular patch.  相似文献

This study addressed within-population dispersal patterns among the species-rich Lake Malawi cichlids, specifically among the rock-dwelling mbuna group. Relatedness values were calculated for 160 individuals belonging to two species from known locations in the field by screening six highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. The results from both species indicate that spatially adjacent females have higher average relatedness values than those separated by larger distances, but that this pattern is reversed in males. This therefore provides firm evidence for male-biased dispersal within the Malawian cichlid flock.  相似文献

Microsatellites were isolated from the damselfish Parma microlepis (Günther 1862) (Pomacentridae) and screened for 100 individuals. Seven of the eight loci tested were highly polymorphic, having 14–43 alleles with average heterozygosities between 0.86 and 0.97. Recent studies have shown that recruitment variability is an important process structuring reef fish assemblages. The aim of this study is to describe the spatio-temporal patterns of recruitment of three abundant labroid taxa (Coris schroederi, Halichoeres melanurus and Scarus spp.), using damselfish territories as replicate units of habitat. Temporal recruitment patterns of each taxa were consistent among three sites along 2 km of reef tract, with small differences among sites probably the result of hydrological or random factors operating at that scale. Recruitment of only one species (C. schroederi) showed consistent differences in the magnitude of recruitment among sites, which was probably due to an overriding effect of habitat selection for the location of the territories on the reef profile at one site. Two taxa, C. schroederi and Scarus spp., recruited in low to moderate rates over many weeks with moderate recruitment peaks detected in one year only. This pattern may be characteristic of many labroid species that have protracted periods of production of larvae. In contrast, H. melanurus recruited in a single short pulse of high magnitude each summer, which suggests that production of larvae by this species may occur over a more restricted period of time. No strong pattern of lunar entrainment of recruitment was detected for any taxa, which may be due to a lack of lunar periodicity in production of larvae. Further studies are now required to identify the processes that are important in determining patterns of labroid recruitment. We isolated and characterized six polymorphic microsatellite loci for the polychaete tubeworm, Hydroides elegans. Two additional loci were not reliably scorable and estimates of heterozygosity were obtained for the other six. In addition, cross‐species amplification was successful for two loci using the congener H. hexagonus. Given that few microsatellite loci are available for polychaetes, these markers will be useful in assessing dispersal and gene flow in H. elegans and probably also other polychaetes.  相似文献

The tongue sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis, is a rare marine flatfish distributed in Chinese coastal waters. From a (GT)n‐enriched genomic library, 57 microsatellites were isolated and characterized. Seventeen of these loci were polymorphic in a test population with alleles ranging from three to 13, and observed and expected heterozygosities from 0.1613 to 1.0000 and from 0.2126 to 0.8983, respectively. Five loci deviated from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in the sampled population, and linkage disequilibrium between two loci was significant after applying Bonferroni correction. Three additional fish species assessed for cross‐species amplification revealed that only one locus was also polymorphic in one species. These polymorphic microsatellite loci should provide sufficient level of genetic diversity to evaluate the breeding strategy and investigate the fine‐scale population structure in C. semilaevis.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that mate choicecopying is a viable mating strategy under certain conditions.Copying experiments in fish have been conducted primarily inthe laboratory, except for one study conducted in the fieldunder artificial conditions. We investigated whether in a wildpopulation of the coral reef whitebelly damselfish (Amblyglyphidodonleucogaster) females copy the choice of other females. Femalespreferentially spawn with males that have recently mated. Todetermine if the presence of new eggs in the nest was the reasonfemales chose mates or whether females were mate choice copying,we conducted egg-switching experiments. Eggs from males thatrecently mated were donated to males that had no eggs. If femalesare mate choice copying, then donor males with no eggs in thenest should continue to receive additional eggs. If femalesare using the presence of new eggs as the criterion for matechoice, then foster males with new eggs should receive additionaleggs. We found that donor males received new eggs significantlymore often than expected. More females mated with donor malesthan foster males. Furthermore, females preferentially choseto mate with males whom they had seen mating with another female.Females appear to remember the mate choice of other femalesand choose to mate with those same males even after 1 day. Theseresults suggest that females may be copying the mating decisionof other females rather than choosing males based on the presenceof new eggs in the nest.  相似文献
