The existence of separated forms within the population of Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) from Lake Plußsee was demonstrated on the basis of a biometric analysis. The morphs cochlearis, hispida and tecta were definitely not connected by transitional forms. Micracantha and tecta were not links of a macracantha-micracantha-tecta-series. Hence, the general validity of Lauterborn-cycles is questioned. In this connection, the taxonomy of this species is also involved, because it is derived from the idea of phenotypic cycles in the sense of Lauterborn.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of the rotifer Keratella cochlearis in stratified water columns of mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes during summer stagnation has been studied. Coexisting morphs K. cochlearis hispida (Lauterborn, 1898), K. c. tecta (Gosse, 1851) and K. c. cochlearis (Gosse, 1851) inhabit different layers in the water column and are vertically subdivided. The distribution of morph abundance and reproductive potential indicate that substitution of morphs within the vertical water column may be due to trophic conditions. The maximum population productivity is observed at the epi-metalimnion border. The maximum density zone lies below the zone of the highest productivity. The principle of sliced functioning is used to explain the adaptive significance of the morphological structure of populations under heterogeneous environmental conditions.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Spine development in a clone of unspined Keratella cochlearis was promoted by a water soluble factor released by the copepods Tropocyclops prasinus and Mesocyclops edax and by the predatory rotifer Asplanchna priodonta. Between 9 and 55% of K. cochlearis populations cultured in predator-conditioned media responded to the inducing chemical.
2. The K. cochlearis form possessing a posterior spine of medium length was much less susceptible to predation by small Tropocylops and Asplanchna than the form lacking the posterior spine. These predators consistently selected the unspined form over the spined form when offered equal densities of each. However, both spined and unspined forms were equally susceptible to predation by large Mesocyclops.
3. The phenotypic variation of offspring produced from induced unspined Keratella females encompassed much of the variation reported for the taxon in North America. These morphotypes are similar to the variation of forms reported for the K. cochlearis tecta series known from Europe. We suggest that the North American morphotypes be identified in studies of this species because the presence of the posterior spine can greatly affect predator selectivity.  相似文献

The effects of a population of the boring gastropod Natica tectaon the bivalve Choromytilus meridionalis were investigated atBailey's Cottage, False Bay, South Africa. In July 1979 theN. tecta density on the mussel bed averaged 69 m–2 andthe population consisted mainly of reproductively mature individualsbetween 20–33 mm shell width. Laboratory experiments on N. tecta showed that prey size selectionis an increasing function of predator size. The prey size rangetaken by large N. tecta is also greater than that taken by smallindividuals. The position of the borehole on the mussel shellis a function of the way in which the shell is held by the footduring the boring process. Consumption rates measured in thelaboratory showed an increase from approximately 1 kJ per weekin 18 mm N. tecta to 4.5 kJ per week in 28 mm individuals. Populationconsumption in the field was calculated as 663 kJ m–2month–1. It was estimated that at this rate the standingcrop of mussels in the pool would be eliminated within 10 months.Field measurements showed significant depletion after 6 months. New spat settlement of mussels occur every 4–6 years. The growth curve shows that after one year the population meansize exceeds 30 mm shell length, which is beyond the prey selectionsize range of small N. tecta. It was concluded that at the timeof a new mussel settlement a niche is provided for the simultaneoussettlement and growth of juvenile N. tecta in high densities. However, within one year the increase in prey size, togetherwith depletion due to over-exploitation, limits population growthand density in N. tecta. Ephemeral blooms of filamentous bacteria are a common phenomenon in the water column of oligo- to mesotrophic lakes. It is assumed that the appearance of such morphotypes is favored by selective predation of bacterivorous protists and that filter-feeding zooplankton plays a major role in suppressing these bacteria. The phylogenetic affiliation of the important bloom-forming filamentous bacteria in freshwaters is presently unknown. Here we report the identification of dominant members of a filamentous bacterial assemblage during a bloom of such morphotypes in a mesotrophic lake. By molecular cloning and fluorescence in situ hybridization with specific oligonucleotide probes, up to 98% of filamentous cells in lake water could be assigned to a clade of almost identical (99% similarity) 16S rRNA gene sequence types, the cosmopolitan freshwater LD2 cluster. For a period of less than 1 week, members of the LD2 clade constituted >40% of the total bacterial biomass, potentially favored by high grazing of planktivorous protists. This is probably the most pronounced case of dominance by a single bacterioplankton species ever observed in natural freshwaters. In enclosures artificially stocked with the metazoan filter feeder Daphnia, bacteria related to the LD2 clade formed a significantly larger fraction of filaments than in enclosures where Daphnia had been removed. However, in the presence of higher numbers of Daphnia individuals, the LD2 bacteria, like other filaments, were eventually eliminated both in enclosures and in the lake. This points at the potential importance of filter-feeding zooplankton in controlling the occurrence and species composition of filamentous bacterial morphotypes in freshwater plankton.  相似文献

Phytoplankton often develop various defense mechanisms in response to zooplankton grazing, such as spines and colonies. While it is now known that increased spine length and cells in a colony of members of the genus Scenedesmus, when zooplankton grazing is intense, helps in reducing zooplankton filtering rates, the effect of these defense mechanisms at the population level has been observed in few studies. Here we present data on the growth rates of four zooplankton species, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. patulus, Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex at two food levels using two species of colony-forming Scenedesmus spp.: S. acutus (cell length = 18.2 ± 0.4 µm; width = 4.2 ± 0.1 µm; average colony length = 90 µm; width: 21 µm) and S. quadricauda (cell length: 21 ± 0.5 width 7.5 ± 0.3 µm; average colony length: 84 µm; width: 30 µm). Whereas S. acutus had no spines, S. quadricauda had spines of 6–10 µm. Population growth experiments of the test rotifers and cladocerans were conducted in 100 ml containers with 50 ml of the medium with test algae. Algae concentrations used were: 13 and 52 mg dw l–1 of each of the two algal species offered in colonial forms. We used an initial inoculation zooplankter density of 1 ind. ml–1 for either of the rotifer species and 0.2 ind. ml–1 for either of the cladoceran species. In all, we had 64 test containers (4 test species of zooplankton × 2 test species of algae × 2 algal densities × 4 replicates). We found a significant effect of algal size on the growth rates of all the four tested species of zooplankton. The population growth rates of zooplankton ranged from ?0.58 to 0.66 and were significantly higher on diet of S. acutus than of S. quadricauda. Thus, our study confirms that the larger colony size and the formation of spines in S. quadricauda were effective defenses against grazing by both rotifers and smaller sized cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia but that larger-bodied Daphnia pulex could exploit both the algal populations equally.  相似文献

The ecological preferences of morphological groups within major coccolithophore taxa were studied in surface water samples from the equatorial and subequatorial Pacific Ocean. Emiliania huxleyi was subdivided into three morphological groups: Type A, Type C, and variety corona. The most probable factors limiting the occurrence of E. huxleyi Types A and C were high temperatures and low nutrient concentrations, respectively. E. huxleyi var. corona had an affinity for oligotrophic conditions. Calcidiscus leptoporus ssp. small was adapted to fertile waters. Umbilicosphaera foliosa and Umbilicosphaera sibogae preferred mesotrophic upwelling waters and stratified marginal waters surrounding the upwelling front, respectively. Among the three Umbellosphaera tenuis morphotypes observed in this study (Types I, III, and IV), only Type I was found in very warm tropical surface. Both Types III and IV were found in subtropical waters, and Type III differed from Type IV in that its distribution was constrained to hemi-pelagic waters. Habitat segregation among the morphotypes of major taxa indicates that the observed global distributions of these major taxa are, in fact, combinations of discrete morphological groups.  相似文献

This study quantified leg stiffness and vGRF measures for males and females using different stride lengths to run with four body borne loads (20, 25, 30, and 35 kg). Thirty-six participants (20 males and 16 females) ran at 4.0 m/s using either: their preferred stride length (PSL), or strides 15% longer (LSL) and shorter (SSL) than PSL. Leg stiffness and vGRF measures, including peak vGRF, impact peak and loading rate, were submitted to a RM ANOVA to test the main effect and interactions of load, stride length, and sex. Leg stiffness was greater with the 30 kg (p = 0.016) and 35 kg (p < 0.001) compared to the 20 kg load, but decreased as stride lengthened from SSL to PSL (p < 0.001) and PSL to LSL (p < 0.001). Males exhibited greater leg stiffness than females with SSL (p = 0.029). Yet, males decreased leg stiffness with each increase in stride length (p < 0.001; p < 0.001), while females only decreased leg stiffness between PSL and LSL (p = 0.014). Peak vGRF was greater with the addition of body borne load (p < 0.001) and increase in stride length (p < 0.001). Both impact peak and loading rate were greater with the 30 kg (p = 0.034; p = 0.043) and 35 kg (p = 0.004; p = 0.015) compared to the 20 kg load, and increased as stride lengthened from SSL to PSL (p = 0.001; p = 0.004) and PSL to LSL (p < 0.001; p < 0.001). Running with body borne load may elevate injury risk by increasing leg stiffness and vGRFs. Injury risk may further increase when using longer strides to run with body borne load.  相似文献

The size variability of the coccolith species Biscutum constans and Watznaueria barnesiae has been studied in 50 samples of the Late Albian “Niveau Breistroffer” black shales (Col de Palluel section, SE France). For each species, length and width of the total coccolith and the central unit have been measured in 60 specimens per sample. In addition, ellipticity and central unit length/total coccolith length ratio have been calculated. This study aims to improve our understanding of the taxonomic concepts of B. constans and W. barnesiae, and to test whether the size changes correspond to palaeoceanographic changes interpreted from other proxies. Two morphotypes (varieties) were differentiated for each of the two taxa studied. B. constans includes morphotypes with a narrow (B. constans var. constans) and a wide central unit (B. constans var. ellipticum). Between these two morphotypes no significant size differentiation has been observed. They seem to represent end members of a size continuum, relating to both the total coccolith- and central unit size distribution. The two morphotypes of W. barnesiae differ only in the absence (W. barnesiae var. barnesiae) and the presence of a narrow central opening (W. barnesiae var. fossacincta). No significant size differences have been observed between these two morphotypes, and both show similar distributions of the measured characteristics. We recommend that the studied morphotypes of both B. constans and W. barnesiae should not be assigned to different morphospecies. Throughout the studied black shale succession the measured parameters show mostly statistically insignificant, short-term fluctuations, but significant long-term trends have been observed for B. constans. These show a trend to smaller forms with a narrower central unit in the upper part of the succession. This change coincides with a cooling trend, as indicated by a nannofossil based temperature index. Therefore the two morphotypes of B. constans are interpreted to represent ecophenotypic varieties rather than two different morphospecies. No clear relationship has been recognized between the size of W. barnesiae and the palaeoenvironmental conditions.  相似文献

A limnological study was sustained from September 1980 to October 1981 to show the evolution of Gallocanta Lake (N.E. Spain) under very dry climatic conditions. It is the physical terminus within an endorheic basin of 500 km2 situated 1 000 m over the sea level. In 1977 its maximum depth was 2.5 m but it decreased to 60 cm in 1981 as a consequence of the last very dry years. It is actually 6 km long and 2.5 km wide, and its area is approximately 12 km2. Salt concentration was quite constant (32–43 g l-1) since September 1980 until June 1981. The equivalent ratio Cl-:SO inf4 sup2- varied between 2.2 and 2.8. From June through October 1981 salinity increased up to 105 g l-1 and Cl-:SO inf4 sup2- equivalent ratio varied between 2.5 and 3.4. The relative concentrations of ions were retained all year ordinated as follows: Cl- > SO inf4 sup2- > HCO inf3 sup- >. CO inf3 sup2- ; Na+ > Mg2+ ? Ca2+ > K+. Total reactive phosphorus was less than 1.5 µg-at l-1 from September 1980 to January 1981. During the rest of the studied period it varied between 2 and 8 µg-at l-1 (the maximum, in February 1981). Nitrogen oxidized forms were relatively high in winter (4–8 µg-at N-NO inf3 sup- l-1; 0.5–2.5 µg-at N-NO inf2 sup- l-1), and early May 1981 (25 µg-at N-NO inf3 sup- l-1; 1 µg-at N-NO inf2 sup- l-1). Neither reached 1 µg-at l-1 from September through December 1980, or from June through October 1981. Planktonic algae increased in density during the period of the study from 103 to 5 105 cells ml-1. Chromulina sp. was the main species during autumn and winter (>50% in number of cells ml-1) while the copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus decreased its population. Lobocystis dichotoma increased its density from December 1980 to May 1981 and was dominant in spring (>90%), when a typical reproductive activity was observed in the Arctodiaptomus population. This species disappeared in late spring. In June 1981 Brachionus plicatilis reached up to near 2 000 individuals ml-1. This species was not observed after August 1981. Then the ciliate Fabrea salina was the only zooplankter staying in the free waters of the lake and Nannochloris sp. the dominant alga (>90%). Dense macrophytic beds constituted of Lamprothamnium papulosum and Chara galioides covered the bottom of the lake in September 1980 and before that date since the observations began in 1977. They decreased in covered area since October 1980 and disappeared during summer 1981. Gallocanta Lake is in a very stressed situation produced by prolonged drought. The increased salt concentration together with the extremely cold and hot temperatures, and the lack of nitrogen relative to phosphorus are the main environmental factors that controlled the biological populations during the period of the present study.  相似文献

A segregating F2 population of Arabidopsis thaliana derived from a cross between the late-flowering ecotype Hannover/Münden (HM) and the early-flowering ecotype Wassilewskija (WS) was analyzed for flowering time and other morphological traits. Two unlinked quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting days to first flower (DFF-a and DFF-b) mapped to chromosome 5. QTLs which affect node number (NN), leaf length at flowering (LLF), and leaf length at 35 days (LL35) also mapped to chromosome 5; LLF-a, LL35-a, NN-a map to the same region of chromosome 5 as DFF-a; LLF-b and LL35-bmap to the same region of chromosome 5 as DFF-b. Another QTL affecting leaf length at flowering (LLF-c) maps to chromosome 3. The proximity of DFF-a, LLF-a, LL35-a and NN-a, as well as the similarity in gene action among these QTLs (additivity), suggest that they may be pleiotropic consequences of a single gene at this locus. Similarly, LL35-b and LLF-b map near each other and both display recessive gene action, again suggesting the possibility of pleiotropy. DFF-b, which also maps near LL35-b and LLF-b, displays largely additive gene action (although recessive gene action could not be ruled out). This suggests that DFF-b may represent a different gene from LL35-b and/or LLF-b. DFF-a maps near two previously identified mutants: co (which also affects flowering time and displays gene action consistent with additivity) and flc. Similar map locations and gene actions of QTLs affecting the correlated traits DFF, LLF, LL35 and NN suggest that these genomic regions harbor naturally occurring allelic variants involved in the general transition of the plant from vegetative to reproductive growth.  相似文献

Summary Smaller benthic and planktonic foraminifera from the clastic sediments of the Pazin Basin (Istria, Croatia) were studied in order to obtain more data about paleoceanographic conditions that existed in the Middle Eocene Dinaric foreland basin. The succession investigated corresponds to the Middle Eocene planktonic foraminiferal zones Globigerapsis kugleri/Morozovella aragonensis (P11), Morozovella lehneri (P12), and Globigerapsis beckmanni (P13). Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from the clastic succession are dominated by epifaunal trochospiral genera suggesting oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions and moderately oxygenated bottom waters. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages indicate mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions of the surface waters, with increased eutrophication in the upper part of the section. Water depth, based on the ratio between planktonic and epifaunal benthic foraminifera and on the recognized species of cosmopolitan benthic foraminifera, was estimated to have been between about 900 and 1200 m. The basin was elongated and open to marine currents on both sides allowing good circulation and ventilation of the bottom water.  相似文献

Microplankton community structures and abundance was assessed in lakes at the Toolik Lake LTER site in northern Alaska during the summers of 1989 and 1990. The microplankton community included oligotrich ciliates, but rotifers and zooplankton nauplii comprised greater than 90% of total estimated heterotrophic microplankton biomass. Dominant rotifer taxa included Keratella cochlearis, Kellicottia longispina, Polyarthra vulgaris, Conochilus unicornis and a Synchaeta sp. Microplankton biomass was lowest in highly oligotrophic Toolik Lake (< 5 μgCl−1 at the surface) and highest (up to 55 μCl−1) in the most eutrophic lakes, experimentally fertilized lakes, and fertilized limnocorrals, consistent with bottom-up regulation of microplankton abundance.  相似文献

Morphological changes in a population of Keratella cochlearis were investigated in a reservoir of changed temperature and high trophy. Four morphological forms were distinguished: Keratella cochlearis f. cochlearis, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. typica and K. cochlearis f. macracantha. A correlation between the length of the lorica and the posterior spine, and the temperature of water was observed. These four forms of Keratella cochlearis occurred during the entire period of investigations.  相似文献

Five new species of Trypanosoma are described from iguanid lizards. In Texas, T. poinsetti n. sp. occurs in Sceloporus poinsetti and T. urosauri n. sp. in Urosaurus graciosus. Average dimensions of T. poinsetti are body length (BL) 35.7 × maximum width (MW) 10.7 µm, nucleus length (NL) 4.3 µm, position of kinetoplast (K%) 70.6, position of nucleus (N%) 61.9, ratio of BL: MW (SI) 3.4, and ratio (NI) of NL to nucleus width (NW) 1.5. In T. urosauri average dimensions are BL 34.3 × MW 6.3 µm, NL 2.4 µm, K% 57.5, N% 66.2, SI 5.6, and NI 1.3. Trypanosomes with small compact nuclei that parasitise four Anolis species from Belize to Panama are assigned to T. anolisi n. sp. Average dimensions from the type sample in Anolis limifrons of Panama are BL 24.6 × MW 17.9 µm, NL 2.1 µm, K% 82.0, N% 78.4, SI 1.6 and NI 1.1. T. fairchildi n. sp., from Anolis capito of Panama, is a large, tongue- or leaf-shaped flagellate with BL 49.2 × MW 28.8 µm, NL 2.0 µm, K% 75.6, N% 64.5, NL 2.0, SI 1.9 and NI 1.6. Dimensions of T. plicaplicae n. sp., from Plica plica of Guyana, average BL 30.9 × MW 19.9 µm, NL 7.2 µm, K% 75.8, N% 56.2, SI 1.6 and NI 2.3. In the United States, T. scelopori parasitises Sceloporus occidentalis and Crotaphytus collaris in California. Trypanosomes with an elongate slender nucleus found in lizards of the genera Sceloporus and Corytophanes from Veracruz, Mexico to Panama, and in Anolis probably as far as Peru, are all considered to be T. serveti. Other species may be present, but cannot be separated on the basis of consistent morphometric characters. Two additional species are known from endemic South American saurian genera: T. plicae occurs in Plica umbra and T. superciliosae in Uranoscodon superciliosa of Brazil. T. domerguei is known from the Madagascan iguanid, Oplurus sebae. Only T. scincorum of southeast Asian skinks lacks host effect upon morphological characters throughout its range. Samples from two hosts each of T. anolisi in Panama and T. uluguruense in Tanzania differed in only two of 10 characters analysed, suggesting little host effect. Other comparisons of iguanid and gekkonid trypanosomes suggested that differences in parasite strain rather than host might contribute to observed variation.  相似文献

Findings of the cladoceran Diaphanosoma mongolianum have been recorded in lakes Pleshcheevo (since 2004) and Nero (since 2007) in Yaroslavl oblast at the northern boundary of its range. Similar species D. brachyurum, previously described in both lakes, is found in insignificant numbers. In 2004–2015, the seasonal abundance, spatial distribution, and diel vertical migration of D. mongolianum were studied in deep mesotrophic Lake Pleshcheevo. The species was found in the plankton from early June until October, with the maximum abundance in July–August. The late appearance of males and gamogenetic females (September) is characteristic of its population. D. mongolianum was the most abundant in the epilimnion of the pelagic zone, where it performed diel vertical migrations, concentrating in the surface layer (0–2 m) at night and at a depth of 2–6 m during the day.  相似文献

Certain aspects of the biology of two populations of D. viridis living in Massam's Slack North and a drainage ditch skirting the Hightown Road, Lancs. were studied. The habitats are described; both are devoid of water for several months during the summer/autumn. Sampling techniques are described. Changes in the numbers and size-structure of both populations were studied. After the re-flooding of the habitats, one to a few months elapsed before hatching of cocoons of D. viridis occurred; in both habitats hatching occurred earlier after the drought in 1970 than after the dry period in 1969; hatching ceased by April in the drainage ditch (Hightown) and bij May in Massam's Slack. In both populations animals were still growing into the larger size-categories when the habitats became dry, in June in the case of Massam's Slack and in May in the case of the drainage ditch (Hightown). Cocoon formation started when animals reached a length of 2.0 mm. The maximum number of cocoons observed was 24. Cocoon size varied from 245 × 127 mm to 294 × 137 mm. When first formed the penis stylet does not possess handles; as the stylet grows so the handles, the lateral distal branches, and spines increase in size. The total length of stylet varied from 74 to 370 µm according to the size of specimen examined; the average, minimum and maximum lengths recorded in specimens in the 3.0 mm size-group was 338 µm, 313 µm and 370 µm respectively. The data gleaned on the above aspects of the biology of D. viridis in the present study are compared with some available information presented in previous publications by continental workers.  相似文献

Neoascarophis sinensis n. sp. collected from the whitespotted conger Conger myriaster (Brevoort) (Anguilliformes: Congridae) in the Yellow and East China Seas, is described using both light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is characterised mainly by the body size (8.5–10.5 mm in the males, 9.5–14.0 mm in the females), the location of the vulva (near equatorial region of the body), the non-bifurcate deirids, the lengths of the vestibule (40–50 µm in the males, 30–60 µm in the females) and glandular oesophagus (2.5–3.1 mm in the males, 3.1–3.5 mm in the females) and the morphology and length of the spicules (left spicule 400–410 µm, right spicule 130–150 µm). Neoascarophis sinensis n. sp. is the first species of Neoascarophis Machida, 1976 reported from the anguilliform fish and is also the only species of this genus found in the Chinese waters.  相似文献

We describe two novel myxosporean parasites from Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii, an economically important freshwater catfish from the Amazon basin, Brazil. Myxobolus tapajosi n. sp., was found in the gill filaments of 23.5% of 17 fish, with myxospores round to oval in frontal view and biconvex in lateral view: length 15 (13.5–17) μm and width 10.7 (9.6–11.4) μm; polar capsules equal, length 5.8 (4.6–7.1) μm and width 3 (2.3–3.8) μm containing polar tubules with 6–7 turns. Ellipsomyxa amazonensis n. sp. myxospores were found floating freely or inside plasmodia in the gall bladder of 23.5% of fish. The myxospores were ellipsoidal with rounded extremities: length 12.8 (12.3–13.6) μm and width 7.6 (6.7–8.7) μm; with two equal, slightly pyriform polar capsules, length 3.8 (3.8–4.0) μm and width 3.1 (2.5–3.4) μm, containing polar tubules with 2–3 turns. We combined spore morphometry, small-subunit ribosomal DNA data, specific host, and phylogenetic analyses, to identify both of these parasites as new myxozoan species. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses showed that Myxobolus tapajosi n. sp. clustered in a basal branch in a subclade of parasites from exclusively South American pimelodid fishes. Ellipsomyxa amazonensis n. sp. clustered within the marine Ellipsomyxa lineage, but we suspect that although the parasite was collected in freshwater, its hosts perform a large migration throughout the Amazon basin and may have become infected from a brackish/marine polychaete host during the estuary phase of its life.  相似文献
