Stomatal behavior in response to drought has been the focus of intensive research, but less attention has been paid to stomatal density. In this study, 5-week-old maize seedlings were exposed to different soil water contents. Stomatal density and size as well as leaf gas exchange were investigated after 2-, 4- and 6-week of treatment, which corresponded to the jointing, trumpeting, and filling stages of maize development. Results showed that new stomata were generated continually during leaf growth. Reduced soil water content significantly stimulated stomatal generation, resulting in a significant increase in stomatal density but a decrease in stomatal size and aperture. Independent of soil water conditions, stomatal density and length in the trumpeting and filling stages were greater than in the jointing stage. Irrespective of growth stage, severe water deficit significantly reduced stomatal conductance (G s), decreasing the leaf transpiration rate (T r) and net photosynthetic rate (P n). Stomatal density was significantly negatively correlated with both P n and T r but more strongly with T r, so the leaf instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE i ) correlated positively with stomatal density. In conclusion, drought led to a significant increase in stomatal density and a reduction in stomatal size and aperture, resulting in decreased P n and T r. Because the negative correlation of stomatal density to T r was stronger than that to P n, leaf WUE i tended to increase.  相似文献

Urban green infrastructure, GI (e.g., parks, gardens, green roofs) are potentially important biodiversity habitats, however their full ecological capacity is poorly understood, in part due to the difficulties of monitoring urban wildlife populations. Ecoacoustic surveying is a useful way of monitoring habitats, where acoustic indices (AIs) are used to measure biodiversity by summarising the activity or diversity of biotic sounds. However, the biases introduced to AIs in acoustically complex urban habitats dominated by anthropogenic noise are not well understood. Here we measure the level of activity and diversity of the low (0–12 kHz, l) and high (12–96 kHz, h) frequency biotic, anthropogenic, and geophonic components of 2452 h of acoustic recordings from 15 sites across Greater London, UK from June to October 2013 based on acoustic and visual analysis of recordings. We used mixed-effects models to compare these measures to those from four commonly used AIs: Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI), Acoustic Diversity Index (ADI), Bioacoustic Index (BI), and Normalised Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI). We found that three AIs (ACIl, BIl, NDSIl) were significantly positively correlated with our measures of bioticl activity and diversity. However, all three were also correlated with anthropogenicl activity, and BIl and NDSIl were correlated with anthropogenicl diversity. All low frequency AIs were correlated with the presence of geophonicl sound. Regarding the high frequency recordings, only one AI (ACIh) was positively correlated with measured biotich activity, but was also positively correlated with anthropogenich activity, and no index was correlated with biotich diversity. The AIs tested here are therefore not suitable for monitoring biodiversity acoustically in anthropogenically dominated habitats without the prior removal of biasing sounds from recordings. However, with further methodological research to overcome some of the limitations identified here, ecoacoustics has enormous potential to facilitate urban biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring at the scales necessary to manage cities in the future.  相似文献

The non-target effects of acaricides, used against Aceria guerreronis (Acari: Eriophyidae) the coconut mite, on its natural enemies are not known. Therefore we assessed the susceptibility of A. guerreronis and its predator Neoseiulus baraki (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to selected acaricides, their impact on N. baraki rate of increase, and the synergism of fenpyroximate towards this predator. Toxicity bioassays and synergism of fenpyroximate (with piperonyl butoxide, triphenyl phosphate and diethyl maleate) were performed by spraying the mites under a Potter tower. The instantaneous rate of increase (r i ) was calculated ten days after spraying the predator. Chlorfenapyr and fenpyroximate were selective (both LC50 and LC90 were higher for N. baraki than for A. guerreronis) and did not affect the predator r i . Only piperonyl butoxide significantly synergized fenpyroximate suggesting the involvement of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase in the N. baraki tolerance. Fenpyroximate and chlorfenapyr are promising agents for managing A. guerreronis in combination with N. baraki because both are selective and do not affect its predator r i .  相似文献

In order to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of Stipa bungeana under the background of grassland utilization and grazing exclusion, ten S. bungeana populations were selected from different steppe type in the Loess Plateau of China. Sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) marker was used to assess the genetic diversity. Fifteen SRAP primer combinations generated a total of 482 amplification bands, 418 (86.72%) were polymorphic bands. A relatively high level of genetic diversity (PPB = 89.80%, h = 0.1972, H = 0.3154) was detected at the species level, but the genetic diversity was low at the population level (PPB = 17.01–33.33%, h = 0.0438–0.0967, H = 0.0361–0.1447). AMOVA analysis revealed a high level of genetic differentiation among populations (ΦST = 0.6757), and a limited among-population gene flow (Nm = 0.1200). There was no significant correlation between genetic distance and geographic distance by Mantel test (r = 0.1126, P = 0.204). Conservation implications were proposed for S. bungeana.  相似文献

Genic variation in male haploids and male diploids was compared assuming constant fitnesses (derived from computer-generated random numbers) and infinite population size. Several models were studied, differing by the fitness correlation between the sexes (rs) and genotypes (rg), and by the intensity of selection as measured by the coefficient of variation (CV) of the fitness distribution. Genic variation was quantified using the proportion of polymorphic loci, P, the gene diversity at polymorphic loci, Hp, and the gene diversity over all loci, Ha. The two genetic systems were compared via variation ratios: variation in male haploidy/variation in male diploidy.—P and Ha were markedly lower for male-haploids than for male diploids, the variation ratios declining with increasing rs, rg and CV, but the two genetic systems were similar for Hp. Except for male diploids with rs = 1, the two sexes had different equilibrium gene frequencies but the sample sizes required to detect such differences reliably were larger than usually possible in surveys of natural populations.—Data from natural populations fit the above trends qualitatively, but the variation ratios are much lower than those from our analyses, except that for Hp, which is higher when Drosophila is excluded. Also, the frequency distribution of most common alleles from electrophoretic data has a deficiency of intermediate frequencies compared to that from the computer-generated sets of fitnesses, possibly reflecting either the influence of stochastic processes shifting frequencies away from equilibrium or the involvement of alleles under selection-mutation balance.——While electrophoretic data suggest that Drosophila has unusually high levels of genic variation, unusually low levels of genic variation in male haploids compared with male diploids are not strongly indicated. However, if further data confirm male haploids as having low levels of genic variation, likely explanations are that the bulk of electrophoretically detected variation involves fixed-fitness balancing selection, selection-mutation balance involving slightly deleterious recessive alleles, new favorable male haploid alleles moving more rapidly to fixation than under male diploidy and thus carrying linked loci to fixation faster, or some combination of these possible factors.  相似文献

If the hydrophobicity of the ith residue in an α-helix is denoted by Hi, one can (following Eisenberg) define a corresponding vector, hi = aiHi. Here ai is a unit vector directed radially from the helix axis through Ciα. The vector sum of the hi for the N residues in an α-helix is denoted by h, and h2 is the square of the magnitude of h. In the absence of any correlation in the hi we obtain h2 = ∑ Hi2, where the sum extends over all N residues in the helix. The dimensionless ratio h2/∑ Hi2 has the value 1 when the hi are uncorrected. However, if hydrophobic residues occur on the opposite surface of a helix from the hydrophilic residues, h2/∑ Hi2 > 1. The h2/∑ Hi2 for the n(n − 1)/2 helices that might occur in a chain of n residues are conveniently displayed as the elements in a symmetric n × n matrix. The jkth and kjth elements are h2/∑ Hi2 for the helix that initiates at residue j and terminates at residue k. All of the h2/∑ Hi2 are retained in either of the triangular matrices that together together constitute the symmetric matrix. The largest element in the triangular matrix for glucagon is the entry for a helix that is nearly identical with the major helix found by Wüthrich when the peptide is bound to a zwitterionic micelle. Three related hormonal peptides have their maximum h2/∑ Hi2 in the same region of their respectively triangular matrices. The triangular matrix for α-tropomyosin shows that the h2/∑ Hi2 are larger in the portion of the chain that forms the more stable helix in the in-register dimer.  相似文献

The typical desert-inhabiting shrub Haloxylon ammodendron (C. A. Mey.) Bunge is an important species that is endangered in Northwest China. In this study, variance, correlation and cluster analysis were employed to examine phenotypic variations of H. ammodendron seed traits from 14 populations in China to investigate their relationships with environmental and genetic factors. The average coefficient of variation was higher among regions (26.9%) than within regions (19.8%). Correlation analysis revealed that the diameter/thickness and fruit wing length were significantly correlated with environmental factors. A cluster dendrograms designed based on seed traits was consistent with the finding from environmental and genetic data obtained using Ward's method and the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means. A Mantel test revealed correlation between seed traits and environmental data (r = 0.53, P < 0.01) was greater than that between seed traits and genetic data (r = 0.25, P < 0.05). Thus, seed traits associated with morphology, mass, and germination varied significantly among the populations, are strongly affected by climatic and geographical factors, and were moderately correlated with genetic diversity. These results provide insights for designing appropriate conservation strategies for H. ammodendron.  相似文献

Conversion of native broadleaf forest (NF) and introduction of broadleaf species into monospecific Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations are silvicultural practices driven by the increasing demand for timber production. This study was conducted to evaluate the impacts of successive planting of C. lanceolata and mixed plantations (C. lanceolata-Michelia macclurei, CFM; C. lanceolata-Alnus cremastogyne, CFA; C. lanceolata-Kalopanax septemlobus, CFK) on microbial community diversity. Microbial biomass (MBC) was assessed using chloroform fumigation-extraction. Using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), we examined the biodiversity within eubacterial (16S rRNA gene) and fungal (28S rRNA gene) species and two genes involved in N cycling: nifH and amoA. Microbial community diversities and microbial biomass decreased as NF was substituted by successive plantings of C. lanceolata plantations, whereas the trend reversed after introducing the broadleaf, M. macclurei, into pure C. lanceolata plantations. A strong positive correlation between MBC changes and total organic C (TOC), total organic N (TON), available N and extractable C (Cext) were seen, which suggests that MBC was tightly coupled with the content of soil organic matter. The Shannon index showed that bacterial diversity and two functional genes (nifH and amoA) diversities associated with monospecific C. lanceolata plantations were lower than that of NF or mixed C. lanceolata plantations, such as CFM and CFA, whereas the opposite was seen for fungal diversity. Bacterial diversity was positively correlated with pH, TOC, TON, Cext and NH 4 + -N; while fungal diversity was positively correlated with C/N ratio and negatively correlated with pH. Both nitrogen fixing and ammonia oxidizing bacterial diversities were positively correlated with pH. Thus, soil pH was not only significantly positively correlated with bacterial diversity (r?=?0.502, P?<?0.05), nifH gene diversity (r?=?0.564, P?<?0.01) and amoA gene diversity (r?=?0.659, P?<?0.001), but also negatively correlated with fungal diversity (r?=?? 0.505, P?<?0.05), which seemed to be responsible for the discrimination of the soil microbial communities among these plantations. These findings suggest that different silvicultural practices have significant impacts on the soil microbial community through influences on soil chemical properties.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for meat quality traits and their relationships with body weight and breast development were estimated for a total of 420 male turkeys using REML. The birds were slaughtered in a commercial plant and the traits measured included pH at 20 min (pH20) and 24 h post-mortem (pHu) and colour of the breast and thigh meat. The heritabilities of the rate and the extent of the pH fall in the breast muscle were estimated at h2 = 0.21 ± 0.04 and h2 = 0.16 ± 0.04, respectively. Heritabilities ranging from 0.10 to 0.32 were obtained for the colour indicators in the breast muscle. A marked negative genetic correlation (rg = -0.80 ± 0.10) was found between pH20 and lightness (L*) of breast meat, both traits corresponding to PSE indicators. The pH20 in the thigh muscle had a moderate heritability (h2 = 0.20 ± 0.07) and was partially genetically related to pH20 in the breast muscle (rg = 0.45 ± 0.17). Body weight and breast yield were positively correlated with both initial and ultimate pH and negatively with the lightness of breast meat.  相似文献

It is argued that alternate prey species in the diet of a food-limited generalist predator should reduce each other's equilibrial abundances, whether or not they directly compete. Such indirect, interspecific interactions are labeled apparent competition. Two examples are discussed in which an observed pattern of habitat segregation was at first interpreted as evidence for direct competition, but later interpreted as apparent competition resulting from shared predation. In order to study the consequences of predator-mediated apparent competition in isolation from other complicating factors, a model community is analyzed in which there is no direct interspecific competition among the prey. An explicit necessary condition for prey species coexistence is derived for the case of one predator feeding on many prey species. This model community has several interesting properties: (1) Prey species with high relative values for a parameter ra are “keystone” species in the community; (2) prey species can be excluded from the community by “diffuse” apparent competition; (3) large changes in the niche breadth of the predator need not correspond to large changes in predator density; (4) the prey trophic level as a whole is regulated by the predator, yet each of its constituent species is regulated by both the predator and available resources; (5) increased productivity may either increase, decrease, or leave unchanged the number of species in the community; (6) a decrease in density-independent mortality may decrease species diversity. These conclusions seem to be robust to changes in the prey growth equations and to the incorporation of predator satiation. By contrast, adding prey refugia or predator switching to the model weakens these conclusions. If the predator can be satiated or switched, the elements aij comprising the community matrix may have signs opposite the long-term effect of j upon i. The effect of natural selection upon prey species coexistence is discussed. Unless ri, Ki, and ai are tightly coupled, natural selection within prey species i will tend to decrease the equilibrial abundance of species j.  相似文献

The berberine bridge-forming enzyme (BBE) has been found in 66 samples taken from differentiated plants and from cell suspension cultures. It was purified 450-fold from Berberis beaniana cell cultures by gel-filtration, DEAE and phenyl-Sepharose chromatography, electrophoresis and isoclectric focusing. The enzyme was shown to be homogeneous by gel electrophoresis (Mr = 52 kD ± 4). The enzyme, which requires the presence of oxygen, catalyses the conversion of the (S)-enantiomers of reticuline, protosinomenine and laudanosoline to the corresponding (S)-tetrahydroprotoberberines and released stoichiometric amounts of H2O2. Within the cells the enzyme is located in a particle with the density p = 1.14 g/ml.  相似文献

Unidirectional extraction of a substrate S in the capillaries following the arterial injection of a bolus containing S and a reference tracer R is assumed to follow first-order kinetics. If CR and CS denote normalized venous effluent concentrations of R and S, respectively, let L(t)=ln[CR(t)⧸CS(t)]. We derive a formula which expresses the experimental L(t) data in terms of the mean μ(t) and variance of the transit times of those capillaries which are contributing indicators at each sample time t. We examine the information thus contained in the L data about capillary and noncapillary transit times under several kinematic assumptions. We show that if the capillary and noncapillary transit times are stochastically independent with frequency functions hc(t) and hav(t), respectively, then the shapes of the graphs of L(t) and μ(t) depend on the variances and skewnesses of hc(t) and hav(t). Specifically, let r2 be the ratio of the variance of hc(t) to the variance of hav(t), and let r3 be the ratio of skewnesses in the same order. Then the graph of μ(t) is concave downward if r2r3 > 1, concave upward if r2r3< 1, and linear if r2r3 = 1. If the fraction of S extracted is not too large, L(t) has nearly the same shape as μ(t), and therefore, L(t) contains information about hc(t) and hav(t).  相似文献

Nitrogenase activity in mangrove forests at two locations in the North Island, New Zealand, was measured by acetylene reduction and 15N2 uptake. Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) in surface sediments 0 to 10 mm deep was highly correlated (r = 0.91, n = 17) with the dry weight of decomposing particulate organic matter in the sediment and was independent of light. The activity was not correlated with the dry weight of roots in the top 10 mm of sediment (r = −0.01, n = 13). Seasonal and sample variation in acetylene reduction rates ranged from 0.4 to 50.0 μmol of C2H4 m−2 h−1 under air, and acetylene reduction was depressed in anaerobic atmospheres. Nitrogen fixation rates of decomposing leaves from the surface measured by 15N2 uptake ranged from 5.1 to 7.8 nmol of N2 g (dry weight)−1 h−1, and the mean molar ratio of acetylene reduced to nitrogen fixed was 4.5:1. Anaerobic conditions depressed the nitrogenase activity in decomposing leaves, which was independent of light. Nitrogenase activity was also found to be associated with pneumatophores. This activity was light dependent and was probably attributable to one or more species of Calothrix present as an epiphyte. Rates of activity were generally between 100 and 500 nmol of C2H4 pneumatophore−1 h−1 in summer, but values up to 1,500 nmol of C2H4 pneumatophore−1 h−1 were obtained.  相似文献

CO2 absorption (PAT) and transpiration (E) rates, and leaf diffusion resistance (ri) were individually studied in all leaves of tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38) before flowering. Differences between old, middle age and young leaves were in all characteristics studied and found statistically significant. In all three leaf age groups E was closely correlated to ri. No similar correlation was discovered between PN and ri. The highest ratiosP N /E in young and middle age leaves indicate that the increase of the internal resistance to photosynthesis with leaf age was more rapid than that of ri.  相似文献

Recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (rhIL-1ra) was chemically conjugated with succinimidyl carbonate monomethoxyl polyethylene glycols of 5 kDa (SC-PEG5k) and 10 kDa (SC-PEG10k) molecular weight. A facile purification of the conjugates was achieved by one-step cationic exchange chromatography. The purity of mono-PEGylated protein was greater than 95%. The purified conjugate was characterized by multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) for determining the apparent gyration radius (rg) and hydrodynamic radius (rh). MALLS results showed that the conjugation of PEG markedly enhanced rg and rh of parent protein (rg: from 15.7 to 48.2 nm for the PEG5k and 81.9 nm for the PEG10k; rh: from 4.2 to 58.4 nm for the PEG5k and 102.3 nm for the PEG10k). The PEGylated rhIL-1ra retained 44.6% of binding activities to the cell receptor for PEG5k and 40.2% for PEG10k, compared to the original protein.  相似文献

Rhamnus glaucophylla Sommier is an endemic small tree or shrub belonging to sect. Eurhamnus. It grows on cliffs of the Apuan Alps and of the Lucca Apennine in Tuscany (Italy). ISSRs were used to detect the genetic diversity within and among five populations representative of the species distribution range. Moderate levels of genetic diversity were revealed as percentage of polymorphic band (PPB) both at the population (PPB?=?22.63%, H S?=?0.0801, Sh?=?0.1193) and species level (PPB?=?48.68%, H T?=?0.1155, Sh?=?0.1837). The correlation between genetic and geographic distances was not significant (Mantel test, r?=?0.17; P?<?0.26). The information on the pattern of genetic variation obtained in this work bears important implications for conservation management, and in particular for ex situ conservation programmes involving long-term seed storage in seed banks.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the functional and numerical responses of the aphidophagous hover fly Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera: Syrphidae) to different densities of 4th instar black bean aphids, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae), on broad bean, Vicia faba L. (Fabaceae). Two different-sized larvae of predators were tested in different densities of similar-sized prey to determine whether functional response parameters depended on the body sizes of predator and prey. In numerical response experiments, gravid E. balteatus females were exposed individually to different densities of 4th instars of A. fabae on cut sections of the broad bean plant, V. faba L. Logistic regression suggested a type II functional response for both larval sizes of E. balteatus. The searching efficiency (a) of the larger larvae was higher than that of the smaller ones. Prey consumption was higher, and handling time (Th) was lower for larger larvae than smaller ones. The theoretical maximum number of A. fabae nymphs eaten by the different-sized larvae was 125 and 269 nymphs per day. Larger E. balteatus larvae are more efficient predators for aphid management strategies. The reproductive numerical response, in terms of the number of eggs laid, increased curvilinearly with increasing prey density, but the proportion of eggs laid (egg number/prey density) decreased as the initial density of prey increased.  相似文献

Formate-dependent proton reduction to H2 (HCOO + H2O → HCO3 + H2) has been reported for hyperthermophilic Thermococcus strains. In this study, a hyperthermophilic archaeon, Thermococcus onnurineus strain NA1, yielded H2 accumulation to a partial pressure of 1 × 105 to 7 × 105 Pa until the values of Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) reached near thermodynamic equilibrium (−1 to −3 kJ mol−1). The bioenergetic requirement for the metabolism to conserve energy was demonstrated by ΔG values as small as −5 kJ mol−1, which are less than the biological minimum energy quantum, −20 kJ mol−1, as calculated by Schink (B. Schink, Microbiol. Mol. Biol. Rev. 61:262-280, 1997). Considering formate as a possible H2 storage material, the H2 production potential of the strain was assessed. The volumetric H2 production rate increased linearly with increasing cell density, leading to 2,820 mmol liter−1 h−1 at an optical density at 600 nm (OD600) of 18.6, and resulted in the high specific H2 production rates of 404 ± 6 mmol g−1 h−1. The H2 productivity indicates the great potential of T. onnurineus strain NA1 for practical application in comparison with H2-producing microbes. Our result demonstrates that T. onnurineus strain NA1 has a highly efficient metabolic system to thrive on formate in hydrothermal systems.  相似文献
