The mode of sexual reproduction and embryogenesis was compared in 3 species of Botrylloides: B. simodensis, B. lenis, and B. violaceus. In all species, a testis and an egg (occasionally 2 eggs), the former being anterior to the latter, mature in the mantle on either side of a zooid. The egg is surrounded by 2 follicular layers and is attached by a vesicular follicle stalk (oviduct) to the atrial brood pouch. The egg is ovulated into the brood pouch, where it is fertilized and undergoes embryogenesis. The egg of B. simodensis is heavily yolked and measures about 180 μm in diameter. The course of embryogenesis in this species is that typical of ascidians. A mature tadpole larva is produced and shed in about 5 days; then, the mother zooid degenerates. The larva is smallest of the three species and has 8 ampullae. The metamorphosed oozooid bears a single bud on the right side only. Extraembryonic nutrition seems to be very limited. Both Botrylloides lenis and B. violaceus are species which display extreme examples of viviparity. Their eggs are devoid of yolk granules, measuring about 90 μm in diameter in the former species and 60 μm in the latter. The course of embryogenesis is similar in these 2 species. The neurula stage is characterized by a spherical vesicular shape owing to precocious differentiation of the embryonic pharynx, whose ectoderm becomes vacuolated. At the posterior end of the neurula, the mesodermal cells are located in a mass, from which the tail is extended later. In B. lenis, embryogenesis takes about 20 days. At the neurula stage of the embryo, the mother zooid becomes a mantle sac as a result of visceral disintegration. During further embryogenesis, the growth of buds of successive generations in the colony is characteristically arrested. A swimming larva of this species is somewhat larger than that of B. simodensis. It has 14–24 ampullae, and the oozooid carries a single bud on its right side. In B. violaceus, the gestation period lasts for more than a month. At the early gastrula stage of the embryo, the body of the mother zooid fully disintegrates. Only the brood pouch bearing the embryo survives and remains connected with the colonial vascular system. In this species, sexual reproduction does not affect the growth of buds in the colony. The swimming larva is gigantic, being furnished with 24–34 ampullae, and the oozooid always bears 3 buds, 2 on the right side and one on the left side.  相似文献

Xenogeneic rejection reactions were histologically examined among four compound ascidians of the genus Botrylloides; B. simodensis, B. lentus, B. fuscus and B. violaceus, to compare with the allogeneic rejections of these species. When the incompatible conspecifics were brought into contact, hemolytic rejections occurred at the point where the tunic of the two colonies was partially fused. Xenogeneic contact at their growing edges induced hemolytic rejection in some combinations (B. simodensis-B. lentus, B. lentus-B. fuscus, and B. fuscus-B. violaceus), while conspicuous reaction was not found in the other combinations. Since the hemolytic rejection requires the partial fusion of tunic, the occurrence of hemolytic rejection suggests that the tunic cuticle of the colonies does not discriminate the facing colony from conspecifics. On the other hand, whereas cut surface contact between incompatible conspecifics induced intense rejection in B. simodensis, it resulted in fusion (formation of vascular connection) even in the combination in which the growing edge contact resulted in rejection. In xenogeneic combination, the cut surface contact of colonies always resulted in an intense rejection reaction except for B. fuscus-B. violaceus in which hemolytic reactions did not occur. The absence of hemolytic rejection suggests that the effector system for rejection reaction is not activated in this combination. Activity of phenoloxidase, a key enzyme of the rejection reaction, indicates lower reactivity in B. lentus, B. fuscus and B. violaceus than that in B. simodensis.  相似文献

Abstract. The mode of allo-recognition among colonies was investigated in a viviparous ascidian, Botrylloides lentus . Each embryo is enveloped by a pouch of epithelial cells (brood pouch), and is brooded in the vascular lumen of the parental colony. That is, the parental colony tolerates the presence of semi-allogeneic conspecifics (embryos) in the vascular system. A rejection reaction occurs when incompatible colonies are brought into contact at their growing edges. The inflammatory rejection reaction is limited to a small area where the tunic of two colonies has partially fused. On the contrary, incompatible colonies fuse and their blood vessels become interconnected with one another, when they are brought into contact at artificially cut surfaces. This mode is the same as those of other viviparous species of Botrylloides, B. fuscus and B. violaceus . A relationship between viviparity and the loss of allo-recognition in the vascular system is suggested.  相似文献

Xenogeneic rejection was observed among colonies of three botryllids, Botryllus scalaris, Botryllus primigenus, and Botrylloides simodensis. Allogeneic recognition occurs in each of these species, but the manner of allogeneic rejection differs among them. We studied xenogeneic rejection reactions among these species under the following conditions: colony contact at natural growing edges, colony contact at artificially cut surfaces, and injection of xenogeneic blood plasma into a vascular vessel. In the first two cases, xenogeneic rejection occurred only in Botryllus primigenus and Botrylloides simodensis. The features of that xenogeneic rejection were similar to those of allogeneic rejection in each of these two botryllids. Injection of xenogeneic blood plasma induced responses similar to those of allogeneic rejection in all three botryllids. It is interesting to note that colonies of Botryllus scalaris never showed any response against injected blood plasma from allogeneic incompatible colonies, unlike the responses seen in colonies of the other two botryllids under the same conditions. On the basis of these results, the relationship between allogeneic and xenogeneic rejection in botryllids is discussed.  相似文献

Evolution of solitary or colonial life histories in tunicates is accompanied by dramatic developmental changes that affect morphology and reproduction. We compared vasa expression in a solitary ascidian and a closely related colonial ascidian, in an effort to uncover developmental mechanisms important during the evolution of these contrasting life histories, including the ability to reproduce by budding. In this study, we explored the origin of germ cells in new buds developing by asexual reproduction in a colonial ascidian, Botrylloides violaceus and compared it to the source of germ cells in a solitary ascidian Boltenia villosa. We studied expression by in situ hybridization of vasa, a DEAD box RNA helicase gene found in germ cells across the metazoans. In B. villosa, bv-vasa mRNA was expressed in putative germ cells and oocytes of adult gonads, and was sequestered into a posterior lineage during embryogenesis. In mature colonies of the ascidian B. violaceus, bot-vasa mRNA was expressed in putative spermatogonia, in oocytes of zooids, and in some circulating cells in the zooids and differentiating buds. We propose that expression of vasa in cells other than gonadal germ cells of zooids in a colonial ascidian may serve as a source of germ-line stem cells in the colony.  相似文献

Understanding the ecological and evolutionary forces that shape the genetic structure of invasive populations and facilitate their expansion across a large spectrum of environments is critical for the prediction of spread and management of ongoing invasions. Here, we study the dynamics of postestablishment colonization in the colonial ascidian Botrylloides violaceus, a notorious marine invader. After its initial introduction from the Northwest Pacific, B. violaceus spread rapidly along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America, impacting both aquaculture facilities and natural ecosystems. We compare genetic diversity and patterns of gene flow among 25 populations (N=679) from the West and East coasts, and evaluate the contribution of sexual vs. asexual reproduction to this species' invasion success using data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and 13 nuclear polymorphic microsatellite loci. Our results reveal contrasting patterns of spread in the coastal waters of North America. While the West coast was colonized by noncontiguous (long-distance) dispersal, the East coast invasion appears to have occurred through contiguous (stepping-stone) spread. Molecular data further indicate that although dispersal in colonial ascidians is predominantly achieved through sexually produced propagules, aquaculture practices such as high-pressure washing can facilitate fragmentation and potentially exacerbate infestations and spread via asexual propagules. The results presented here suggest that caution should be used against the general assumption that all invasions, even within a single species, exhibit similar patterns of colonization, as highly contrasting dynamics may transpire in different invaded ranges.  相似文献

The circulatory systems of four polystyelids, Botryllus schlosseri, B. primigenus, Botrylloides violaceus and Symplegma reptans, were compared. The palleal buds are connected to the parent zooid by a peduncle and to the colonial vascular system by connecting vessels. The peduncle of S. reptans disappears at an earlier stage of bud development than in B. primigenus; it survives the dissolution of the parent zooid in B. schlosseri and B. violaceus. The connecting vessel is formed by anastomosis between an epidermal outgrowth from the bud and a neighboring colonial vessel, and is characterized by the presence of a sphincter. The number of connecting vessels formed in a palleal bud is three in S. reptans, two in B. primigenus and one each in B. schlosseri and B. violaceus. In each species, the larva has eight rudiments of ampullae. In B. primigenus, the original ampullae degenerate soon after metamorphosis and new ampullae extend from the ventral epidermis of the oozooid. In the other species, the colonial vascular system is derived from the original ampullae. The whole colonial vascular system contracts and expands periodically, with regionally different phases. During each expansion cycle, the sphincter contracts once in B. primigenus and twice in S. reptans. The correlation may be due to blood pressure and the propagation of excitation through the colonial vascular system.  相似文献

In order to investigate the relationships between species of the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto such as Pasteurella multocida, Pasteurella canis, Pasteurella stomatis, Pasteurella dagmatis, Pasteurella avium, Pasteurella volantium, Pasteurella gallinarum, Pasteurella species A, Pasteurella species B and "Pasteurella leonis" MCCM 00659 their genomic fingerprints and ARDRA profiles were compared and their quinone systems were analysed. Visual comparison of band patterns from rep-PCR (ERIC-, REP- and BOX-PCR) and the analyses of the combined band patterns by UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with averages) dendrogram derived from the combined fingerprint profiles demonstrated that each strain displays a distinct genomic fingerprint. In members of the same species several similarities in the band patterns were observed. Combined ARDRA profiles, obtained after digestion of amplified 23S rRNA coding genes with the enzymes DdeI, MseI and RsaI, revealed a dissection of the members of the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto into two groups which was in agreement with the two groups obtained from our analyses of the quinone systems. These two groups corresponded with the two phylogenetically determined subclusters 3A and 3B described previously. The species of subcluster 3A displayed a quinone system with ubiquinone Q-7 (32-56%) and ubiquinone Q-8 (44-63%) as major compounds. Members of subcluster 3B had a quinone system with ubiquinone Q-8 (86-97%) as the major compound. Based on these results it can be suggested that the genus Pasteurella sensu stricto should be restricted to the species of subcluster 3B including the species Pasteurella multocida, Pasteurella canis, Pasteurella stomatis, Pasteurella dagmatis and Pasteurella species B. In addition, evidence was found which would indicate that: 1) Pasteurella canis MCCM 00927 is misnamed and should be reclassified with Pasteurella multocida; 2) Pasteurella multocida subsp. septica may be classified as a separate species; and 3) "Pasteurella leonis" MCCM 00659 represents a separate species within subcluster 3B and thus could be described as a species of Pasteurella sensu stricto (also in a redefined genus) when more strains become available.  相似文献

This article documents the addition of 238 microsatellite marker loci and 72 pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Adelges tsugae, Artemisia tridentata, Astroides calycularis, Azorella selago, Botryllus schlosseri, Botrylloides violaceus, Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii, Campylopterus curvipennis, Colocasia esculenta, Cynomys ludovicianus, Cynomys leucurus, Cynomys gunnisoni, Epinephelus coioides, Eunicella singularis, Gammarus pulex, Homoeosoma nebulella, Hyla squirella, Lateolabrax japonicus, Mastomys erythroleucus, Pararge aegeria, Pardosa sierra, Phoenicopterus ruber ruber and Silene latifolia. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Adelges abietis, Adelges cooleyi, Adelges piceae, Pineus pini, Pineus strobi, Tubastrea micrantha, three other Tubastrea species, Botrylloides fuscus, Botrylloides simodensis, Campylopterus hemileucurus, Campylopterus rufus, Campylopterus largipennis, Campylopterus villaviscensio, Phaethornis longuemareus, Florisuga mellivora, Lampornis amethystinus, Amazilia cyanocephala, Archilochus colubris, Epinephelus lanceolatus, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, Symbiodinium temperate-A clade, Gammarus fossarum, Gammarus roeselii, Dikerogammarus villosus and Limnomysis benedeni. This article also documents the addition of 72 sequencing primer pairs and 52 allele specific primers for Neophocaena phocaenoides.  相似文献

Summary: An important evolutionary characteristic of the formicine subfamily Ponerinae is the occurrence of various alternative reproductive tactics within single species. In Platythyrea punctata Smith, 1858, queens, gamergates and parthenogenetic workers co-occur in the same species. Morphological queens, both alate and dealate, were present in only 29 percent of the colonies collected in Florida, but absent from colonies collected in Barbados and Puerto Rico. One of the six queens which were dissected (three alate and three dealate) was found to be inseminated but not fertile. Instead, in most queenless colonies, a single uninseminated worker monopolized reproduction by means of thelytokous parthenogenesis, i.e., it produced female offspring from unfertilized eggs. A single mated, reproductive worker (gamergate) was found dominating reproduction in the presence of an inseminated alate queen in one of the Florida colonies. Thelytokous parthenogenesis was examined in artificial groups of virgin laboratory-reared workers, where one worker typically monopolized reproduction despite the presence of several individuals with elongated ovaries. In 16 colonies collected in Florida, a total of 66 individuals differed morphologically from queens and workers. Their thorax morphology varied from a worker-like to an almost queen-like structure. We refer to these individuals as "intercastes" (sensu Peeters, 1991a). The remarkable complexity of reproductive strategies renders P. punctata unique within ants.  相似文献

Males of sexually dimorphic species often appear more divergent among taxa than do females, so it is often assumed that evolutionary changes have occurred primarily in males. Yet, sexual dimorphisms can result from historical changes in either or both of the sexes, and few previous studies have investigated such patterns using phylogenetic methods. Here, we describe the evolution of male and female plumage colors in the grackles and allies (Icteridae), a songbird clade with a broad range in levels of sexual dichromatism. Using a model of avian perceptual color space, we calculated color distances within and among taxa on a molecular phylogeny. Our results show that female plumage colors have changed more dramatically than male colors in the evolutionary past, yet male colors are significantly more divergent among species today. Historical increases in dichromatism have involved changes in both sexes, whereas decreases in dichromatism have nearly always involved females evolving rapidly to look like males. Dichromatism is also associated with mating system in this group, with monogamous taxa tending to exhibit relatively low levels of sexual dichromatism. Our findings suggest that, despite appearances, female plumage evolution plays a more prominent role in sexual dichromatism than is generally assumed.  相似文献

Colorful plumage plays a prominent role in the evolution of birds, influencing communication (sexual/social selection), and crypsis (natural selection). Comparative studies have focused primarily on these selective pressures, but the mechanisms underlying color production can also be important by constraining the color gamut upon which selection acts. Iridescence is particularly interesting to study the interaction between selection and color‐producing mechanisms because a broad range of colors can be produced with a shared template, and innovations to this template further expand this by increasing the parameters interacting to produce colors. We examine the patterns of ornamentation and dichromatism evolution in African starlings, a group remarkably diverse in color production mechanisms, social systems, and ecologies. We find that the presence of iridescence is ancestral to the group, being predominantly lost in females and cooperative breeders, as well as species with less labile templates. Color‐producing mechanisms interact and are the main predictors of plumage ornamentation and elaboration, with little influence of selective pressures in their evolution. Dichromatism, however is influenced by social system and the loss of iridescence. Our results show the importance of considering both selection and constraints, and the different roles that they may have, in the evolution of ornamentation and dimorphism.  相似文献

We present experimental data on the reproduction patterns of three sympatric sibling rotifer species, belonging to the Brachionus plicatilis complex, as they compete for food. Variation existed in the amount and pattern of sexual reproduction among the three cyclical parthenogenetic species. Competitive exclusion between the three Brachionus species was related to a higher investment in sexual reproduction by the inferior competitor. In general, no correlation was found between sexual reproduction and population density in a given species. However, when pairs of competing species were compared, a negative relationship between sexual investment differences (between species) and average population density differences was frequently found. From the results we conclude that: (1) the characteristic sexual pattern of each species has some implications for the competitive outcome; (2) allocation of resources into sexual reproduction does not mediate coexistence; and (3) the response of sexual reproduction to competitive interaction is unlikely to determine competition outcome. Nevertheless, our results suggest that the competitively inferior species invests more in sexual reproduction, as a response to resource limitation, which would accelerate its exclusion.  相似文献

Crosses between Ustilago violacea mutant strains with different color phenotypes that were derived from the 1.A1 and 2.A2 laboratory strains yielded, as expected, bisectored teliospore colonies with the parental colors as well as the a-1 and the a-2 mating-types. Generally, wild teliospore collections usually produced sporidia of both mating-types, providing two-mating-type (TMT) strains. Occasionally, however, sporidia with only one mating-type allele, a-1 or a-2, were obtained from teliospores, providing one-mating-type (OMT) strains. Crosses between OMT and laboratory strains with different color phenotypes gave (1) bisectored teliospore colonies with the parental colors or colonies with a parental color and a nonparental color and (2) nonsectored colonies with the nonparental color or with the parental color. The frequencies for the occurrence of non-parental color ranged from 41% to 93%, depending on the strain. The yield of teliospore colonies was usually reduced for these crosses. In many of these teliospore colonies, morphologically-altered sporidia (MAS phenotype) were observed. The morphology and the size of the sporidia with the MAS phenotype differed from those of teliospore colonies of the crosses between the laboratory strains. In addition, these sporidia did not form conjugants. A cross involving the TMT strains C449 yielded the MAS phenotype as well as a high incidence of tetrad colonies with a nonparental color. The high degree of instability of the parental color phenotypes, and the high frequency of the appearance of nonparental color phenotypes as well as the appearance of the MAS phenotype, are in accord with the presence of active and inactive transposable elements in the OMT strains, TMT strains, and laboratory strains.  相似文献

Abstract:  A morphometric study was performed on the sexual forms of Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus in colonies kept under laboratory conditions. The males studied were obtained from queenright and queenless colonies, i.e. they were produced by either the queen or the workers. Cluster analysis revealed a wide distribution in the size of the sexual forms produced in queenless colonies compared with queenright colonies, and that some of the worker-produced males were significantly smaller than those produced in queenright colonies. However, we found no indication that the males produced in queenless colonies are unable to mate, as smaller and larger males had identical genitalia that varied only in size, and therefore probably represent an alternative route of reproduction in this species.  相似文献

Many empirical analyses of life-history tactics are based on the assumption that demographic variation ought to be greatest among populations or species living in different environments. However, in a single population of the sessile colonial sea squirt Botryllus schlosseri, there are two discrete life-history morphs. Semelparous colonies are characterized by a) death immediately following the production of a single clutch, b) early age at first reproduction, c) rapid growth to first reproduction, and d) high reproductive effort. In contrast, iteroparous colonies a) produce at least three clutches before dying, b) postpone sexual reproduction until they are nearly twice the age of semelparous colonies, c) grow at about half the rate of semelparous colonies, and d) invest roughly 75% less in reproductive effort than semelparous colonies. Semelparous colonies numerically dominate the population through midsummer; later in the summer, iteroparous colonies are most numerous. Field and laboratory common-garden experiments, along with breeding studies, indicate that the demographic differences between the morphs are genetically determined. Consequently, the seasonal switch from dominance by semelparous colonies to dominance by iteroparous colonies may be an evolved response to a seasonally changing environment. On theoretical grounds, temporal variation in selection is thought to play a relatively unimportant role in maintaining genetic polymorphism; nonetheless, the seasonally recurrent life-history polymorphism shown in this study indicates that temporal variation in selection can lead to the maintenance of genetic polymorphism for traits strongly affecting fitness.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction of the colonial hydroidCordylophora caspia were monitored during the breeding season in natural conditions. In 1987, a life history study was carried out on the upright stems of the main stolon. Mean size of uprights varied cyclically. The first peak coincided with the peak number of sexual hydranths, after which the mean upright length decreased, possibly indicating somatic costs of sexual reproduction. Extrinsic factors like flooding may also have contributed to cyclical changes in upright size. In 1988 and 1989, colonies were reared on experimental plates in the estuary. In 1988, colonies grew until mid July, after which they regressed to a dormant condition and then started growing again in mid August. Predation and space competition are discussed as possible causes for this dormancy in the middle of the growing season. In 1989, colonies grew continually, with the exception of a decline in colony biomass and number of feeding hydranths at the end of July, just following the peak of sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction started in the early stages of colonial development for all years. During early summer,C. caspia allocated resources simultaneously in colonial growth and sexual reproduction. However, sexual reproduction had a clear peak in mid summer, and thereafter sexual reproduction ceased while colonial growth continued.  相似文献

动物毛色是人类正向选择产生的表型之一,在遗传与进化过程中扮演着重要角色。其中马的毛色丰富多变,单从表型无法准确判别其属于哪种毛色,造成马品种登记时毛色性状记录不准确,因此研究马毛色形成机理在育种工作中具有重要意义。随着基因组学及测序技术的日益成熟,马毛色形成遗传机理的研究不断深入,并发现不同毛色性状与特定疾病之间的相关性。本文从遗传学的角度对马的毛色进行归类,对与其形成的相关基因、作用机理及应用等研究进展进行了综述,以期为马毛色形成机理的系统性研究和马匹选育提供借鉴和参考。  相似文献

Since Darwin, the maintenance of bright sexual colors has recurrently been linked to mate preference. However, the mechanisms underpinning such preferences for bright colors would not be resolved for another century. Likely, the idea of selection for colors that could decrease the chances of survival (e.g., flashy colors that can inadvertently attract predators) was perceived as counterintuitive. It is now widely accepted that these extreme colors often communicate to mates the ability to survive despite a “handicap” and act as honest signals of individual quality when they are correlated with the quality of other traits that are directly linked to individual fitness. Sexual colors in males are frequently perceived as indicators of infection resistance, in particular. Still, there remains considerable discord among studies attempting to parse the relationships between the variables associating sexual color and infection resistance, such as habitat type and body size. This discord may arise from complex interactions between these variables. Here, we ask if sexual color in male Florida scrub lizards (Sceloporus woodi) is an honest signal of resistance to chigger mite infection. To this end, we use linear modeling to explore relationships between mite load, different components of sexual color, ecological performance, body size, and habitat type. Our data show that that the brightness of sexual color in scrub lizards is negatively associated with the interaction between mite load and body size, and scrub lizards suffer decreased endurance capacity with increases in mite load. Our data also indicate that mite load, performance, and sexual color in male scrub lizards can vary between habitat types. Collectively, these results suggest that sexual color in scrub lizards is an honest indicator of individual quality and further underscore the importance of considering multiple factors when testing hypotheses related to the maintenance of sexual color.  相似文献
