Parent-Offspring Conflict

When parent-offspring relations in sexually reproducing speciesare viewed from the standpoint of the offspring as well as theparent, conflict is seen to be an expected feature of such relations.In particular, parent and offspring are expected to disagreeover how long the period of parental investment should last,over the amount of parental investment that should be given,and over the altruistic and egoistic tendencies of the offspringas these tendencies affect other relatives. In addition, undercertain conditions parents and offspring are expected to disagreeover the preferred sex of the potential offspring. In general,parent-offspring conflict is expected to increase during theperiod of parental care, and offspring are expected to employpsychological weapons in order to compete with their parents.Detailed data on mother-offspring relations in mammals are consistentwith the arguments presented. Conflict in some species, includingthe human species, is expected to extend to the adult reproductiverole of the offspring: under certain conditions parents areexpected to attempt to mold an offspring, against its betterinterests, into a permanent nonreproductive.     

Race,Community and Conflict as a methodological classic

Rex and Moore's Race, Community and Conflict: A Study of Sparkbrook has the status of a modern sociological classic. The argument presented here is that this can be attributed in part to its methodological underpinnings. The use of a combination of methods to collect material on the lives of Sparkbrook residents in the 1960s allowed a more rounded account to be developed than would have been possible had only the originally planned survey been undertaken. The resultant study is by no means perfect, but its underlying ambition and the determination with which the project was seen through have served to inspire subsequent generations of researchers.

Dutch Resolution of a configurationally stable [5]helquat

Synthesis and nontrivial optical resolution of a helicene‐like dication, helquat 1 , has been accomplished. Starting with gram scale of the racemic helquat 1 sample, Dutch Resolution using family of 3 tartrate anions was key to achieve successful separation of M and P helical enantiomers of 1 . Hundreds of milligrams of each enantiomer of this configurationally stable C₂‐symmetric helquat have been obtained. Racemization barrier of 1 has been determined. To our knowledge this is the first report on Dutch Resolution performed with a helicene‐like compound. Moreover, there are no literature precedents for Dutch Resolution of chiral quaternary ammonium cations.
