The growing demand for advanced energy storage devices with high energy density and high safety has continuously driven the technical upgrades of cell architectures as well as electroactive materials. Designing thick electrodes with more electroactive materials is a promising strategy to improve the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) without alternating the underlying chemistry. However, the progress toward thick, high areal capacity electrodes is severely limited by the sluggish electronic/ionic transport and easy deformability of conventional electrodes. A self‐supported ultrahigh‐capacity and fire‐resistant LiFePO4 (UCFR‐LFP)‐based nanocomposite cathode is demonstrated here. Benefiting from the structural and chemical uniqueness, the UCFR‐LFP electrodes demonstrate exceptional improvements in electrochemical performance and mass loading of active materials, and thermal stability. Notably, an ultrathick UCFR‐LFP electrode (1.35 mm) with remarkably high mass loading of active materials (108 mg cm?2) and areal capacity (16.4 mAh cm?2) is successfully achieved. Moreover, the 1D inorganic binder‐like ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAP NWs) enable the UCFR‐LFP electrode with excellent thermal stability (structural integrity up to 1000 °C and electrochemical activity up to 750 °C), fire‐resistance, and wide‐temperature operability. Such a unique UCFR‐LFP electrode offers a promising solution for next‐generation LIBs with high energy density, high safety, and wide operating‐temperature window. 相似文献

Ethylene Carbonate‐Free Electrolytes for High‐Nickel Layered Oxide Cathodes in Lithium‐Ion Batteries
Layered lithium nickel oxide (LiNiO2) can provide very high energy density among intercalation cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries, but suffers from poor cycle life and thermal‐abuse tolerance with large lithium utilization. In addition to stabilization of the active cathode material, a concurrent development of electrolyte systems of better compatibility is critical to overcome these limitations for practical applications. Here, with nonaqueous electrolytes based on exclusively aprotic acyclic carbonates free of ethylene carbonate (EC), superior electrochemical and thermal characteristics are obtained with an ultrahigh‐nickel cathode (LiNi0.94Co0.06O2), capable of reaching a 235 mA h g?1 specific capacity. Pouch‐type graphite|LiNi0.94Co0.06O2 cells in EC‐free electrolytes withstand several hundred charge–discharge cycles with minor degradation at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In thermal‐abuse tests, the cathode at full charge, while reacting aggressively with EC‐based electrolytes below 200 °C, shows suppressed self‐heating without EC. Through 3D chemical and structural analyses, the intriguing impact of EC is visualized in aggravating unwanted surface parasitic reactions and irreversible bulk structural degradation of the cathode at high voltages. These results provide important insights in designing high‐energy electrodes for long‐lasting and reliable lithium‐ion batteries. 相似文献

A Ni‐rich concentration‐gradient Li[Ni0.865Co0.120Al0.015]O2 (NCA) cathode is prepared with a Ni‐rich core to maximize the discharge capacity and a Co‐rich particle surface to provide structural and chemical stability. Compared to the conventional NCA cathode with a uniform composition, the gradient NCA cathode exhibits improved capacity retention and better thermal stability. Even more remarkably, the gradient NCA cathode maintains 90% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles when cycled at 60 °C, whereas the conventional cathode exhibits poor capacity retention and suffers severe structural deterioration. The superior cycling stability of the gradient NCA cathode largely stemmed from the gradient structure combines with the Co‐rich surface, which provides chemical stability against electrolyte attack and reduces the inherent internal strain observed in all Ni‐rich layered cathodes in their charged state, thus providing structural stability against the repeated anisotropic volume changes during cycling. The high discharge capacity of the proposed gradient NCA cathode extends the driving range of electric vehicles and reduces battery costs. Furthermore, its excellent capacity retention guarantees a long battery life. Therefore, gradient NCA cathodes represent one of the best classes of cathode materials for electric vehicle applications that should satisfy the demands of future electric vehicles. 相似文献

Hard carbon (HC) is the state‐of‐the‐art anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). However, its performance has been plagued by the limited initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and mediocre rate performance. Here, experimental and theoretical studies are combined to demonstrate the application of lithium‐pretreated HC (LPHC) as high‐performance anode materials for SIBs by manipulating the solid electrolyte interphase in tetraglyme (TEGDME)‐based electrolyte. The LPHC in TEGDME can 1) deliver > 92% ICE and ≈220 mAh g?1 specific capacity, twice of the capacity (≈100 mAh g?1) in carbonate electrolyte; 2) achieve > 85% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g?1 current density (4 C rate, 1 C = 250 mA g?1) with a specific capacity of ≈150 mAh g?1, ≈15 times of the capacity (10 mAh g?1) in carbonate. The full cell of Na3V2(PO4)3‐LPHC in TEGDME demonstrated close to theoretical specific capacity of ≈98 mAh g?1 based on Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, ≈2.5 times of the value (≈40 mAh g?1) with nontreated HC. This work provides new perception on the anode development for SIBs. 相似文献

Early demonstrations of wearable devices have driven interest in flexible lithium‐ion batteries. Previous demonstrations of flexible lithium‐ion batteries trade off between low areal capacity, poor mechanical flexibility and/or high thickness of inactive components. Here, a reinforced electrode design is used to support the active layers of the battery and a freestanding carbon nanotube (CNT) layer is used as the current collector. The supported architecture helps to increase the areal capacity (mAh cm‐2) of the battery and improve the tensile strength and mechanical flexibility of the electrodes. Batteries based on lithium cobalt oxide and lithium titanate oxide shows excellent electrochemical and mechanical performance. The battery has an areal capacity of ≈1 mAh cm‐2 and a capacity retention of around 94% after cycling the battery for 450 cycles at a C/2 rate. The reinforced electrode has a tensile strength of ≈5.5–7.0 MPa and shows excellent capacity retention after repeatedly flexing to a bending radius ranging from 45 to 10 mm. The relationships between mechanical flexing, electrochemical performance, and mechanical integrity of the battery are studied using electrochemical cycling, electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). 相似文献

LiNixMnyCo1?x?yO2 (NMC) cathode materials with Ni ≥ 0.8 have attracted great interest for high energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) but their practical applications under high charge voltages (e.g., 4.4 V and above) still face significant challenges due to severe capacity fading by the unstable cathode/electrolyte interface. Here, an advanced electrolyte is developed that has a high oxidation potential over 4.9 V and enables NMC811‐based LIBs to achieve excellent cycling stability in 2.5–4.4 V at room temperature and 60 °C, good rate capabilities under fast charging and discharging up to 3C rate (1C = 2.8 mA cm?2), and superior low‐temperature discharge performance down to ?30 °C with a capacity retention of 85.6% at C/5 rate. It is also demonstrated that the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, not the electrolyte conductivity and viscosity, govern the LIB performance. This work sheds light on a very promising strategy to develop new electrolytes for fast‐charging high‐energy LIBs in a wide‐temperature range. 相似文献

Nickel‐rich layered oxide cathodes with the composition LiNi1?x?yCoxMnyO2 (NCM, (1?x?y) ≥ 0.6) are under intense scrutiny recently to contend with commercial LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) for high‐energy‐density batteries for electric vehicles. However, a comprehensive assessment of their electrochemical durability is currently lacking. Herein, two in‐house cathodes, LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 and LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2, are investigated in a high‐voltage graphite full cell over 1500 charge‐discharge cycles (≈5–10 year service life in vehicles). Despite a lower nickel content, NCM shows more performance deterioration than NCA. Critical underlying degradation processes, including chemical, structural, and mechanical aspects, are analyzed via an arsenal of characterization techniques. Overall, Mn substitution appears far less effective than Al in suppressing active mass dissolution and irreversible phase transitions of the layered oxide cathodes. The active mass dissolution (and crossover) accelerates capacity decline with sustained parasitic reactions on the graphite anode, while the phase transitions are primarily responsible for cell resistance increase and voltage fade. With Al doping, on the other hand, secondary particle pulverization is the more limiting factor for long‐term cyclability compared to Mn. These results establish a fundamental guideline for designing high‐performing Ni‐rich NCM cathodes as a compelling alternative to NCA and other compositions for electric vehicle applications. 相似文献

LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM, 0 ≤ x,y,z < 1) has become one of the most important cathode materials for next‐generation lithium (Li) ion batteries due to its high capacity and cost effectiveness compared with LiCoO2. However, the high‐voltage operation of NCM (>4.3 V) required for high capacity is inevitably accompanied by a more rapid capacity fade over numerous cycles. Here, the degradation mechanisms of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 are investigated during cycling under various cutoff voltage conditions. The surface lattice structures of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 are observed to suffer from an irreversible transformation; the type of transformation depends on the cutoff voltage conditions. The surface of the pristine rhombohedral phase tends to transform into a mixture of spinel and rock salt phases. Moreover, the formation of the rock salt phase is more dominant under a higher voltage operation (≈4.8 V), which is attributable to the highly oxidative environment that triggers the oxygen loss from the surface of the material. The presence of the ionically insulating rock salt phase may result in sluggish kinetics, thus deteriorating the capacity retention. This implies that the prevention of surface structural degradation can provide the means to produce and retain high capacity, as well as stabilize the cycle life of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 during high‐voltage operations. 相似文献

The synthesis of a new layered cathode material, Na0.5[Ni0.23Fe0.13Mn0.63]O2, and its characterization in terms of crystalline structure and electrochemical performance in a sodium cell is reported. X‐ray diffraction studies and high resolution scanning electron microscopy images reveal a well‐defined P2‐type layered structure, while the electrochemical tests demonstrate excellent characteristics in terms of high capacity and cycle life. This performance, the low cost, and the environmental compatibility of its component poses Na0.5[Ni0.23Fe0.13Mn0.63]O2 to be among the most promising materials for the next generation of sodium‐ion batteries. 相似文献

A three‐dimensional porous core‐shell Sn@carbon anode on nickel foam substrate was fabricated by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique followed by high temperature treatment. The carbon shell with a thickness of about 3.2 nm was formed on porous Sn structure at high temperature. 3D porous structure and carbon shell were designed to buffer volume expansion/shrinkage of Sn lattice upon cycling and increase the electrical conductivity. After 315 charge/discharge cycles Sn@carbon anode exhibited high specific capacity of 638 mAh g?1 with the low capacity fade of average 0.11 mAh g?1 per cycle. Sn@carbon based anodes was demonstrated to have promising potential for high performance lithium ion batteries application. 相似文献

Surface Mn Oxidation State Controlled Spinel LiMn2O4 as a Cathode Material for High‐Energy Li‐Ion Batteries 下载免费PDF全文
Spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) has attracted much attention as a promising cathode material for large‐scale lithium ion batteries. However, its continuous capacity fading at elevated temperature is an obstacle to extended cycling in large‐scale applications. Here, surface Mn oxidation state controlled LiMn2O4 is synthesized by coating stoichiometric LiMn2O4 with a cobalt‐substituted spinel, for which stoichiometric LiMn2O4 is used as the starting material and onto which a LixMnyCozO4 layer is coated from an acetate‐based precursor solution. In the coated material, the concentrations of both cobalt and Mn4+ ions vary from the surface to the core. the former without any lattice mismatch between the coating layer and host material. Cycle tests are performed under severe conditions, namely, high temperature and intermittent high current load. During the first discharge cycle at 7 C and 60 °C, a high energy and power density are measured for the coated material, 419 and 3.16 Wh kg?1, respectively, compared with 343 and 3.03 Wh kg?1, respectively, for the bare material. After 65 cycles under severe conditions, the coated material retains 82% and ≈100% of the initial energy and power density, respectively, whereas the bare material retains only ≈68% and ≈97% thereof. 相似文献

Calcium represents a promising anode for the development of high‐energy‐density, low‐cost batteries. However, a lack of suitable electrolytes has restricted the development of rechargeable batteries with a Ca anode. Furthermore, to achieve a high energy density system, sulfur would be an ideal cathode to couple with the Ca anode. Unfortunately, a reversible calcium‐sulfur (Ca‐S) battery has not yet been reported. Herein, a basic study of a reversible nonaqueous room‐temperature Ca‐S battery is presented. The reversibility of the Ca‐S chemistry and high utilization of the sulfur cathode are enabled by employing a Li+‐ion‐mediated calcium‐based electrolyte. Mechanistic insights pursued by spectroscopic, electrochemical, microscopic, and theoretical simulation (density functional theory) investigations imply that the Li+‐ions in the Ca‐electrolyte stimulate the reactivation of polysulfide/sulfide species. The coordination of lithium to sulfur reduces the formation of sturdy Ca‐S ionic bonds, thus boosting the reversibility of the Ca‐S chemistry. In addition, the presence of Li+‐ions facilitates the ionic charge transfer both in the electrolyte and across the solid electrolyte interphase layer, consequently reducing the interfacial and bulk impedance of Ca‐S batteries. As a result, both the utilization of active sulfur in the cathode and the discharge voltage of Ca‐S batteries are significantly improved. 相似文献
