The inhibitory effects and removal efficiency of dieldrin (DLD) in anaerobic reactors were investigated. Anaerobic toxicity assay (ATA) experiments conducted in batch reactors revealed that 30 mg/l DLD had inhibitory effects on the unacclimated mixed anaerobic cultures. Continuous reactor experiments performed in a lab-scale two-stage upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor system which was fed with ethanol as the sole carbon source, indicated that anaerobic granular cultures could be successfully acclimated to DLD. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were 88-92% for the two-stage system. The influent DLD concentration of 10 mg/l was removed by 44-86% and 86-94% in the second stage and overall UASB system, respectively. Biosorption of DLD on granular anaerobic biomass was found to be a significant mechanism for DLD removal in the UASB system. The maximum DLD loading rate and minimum HRT achievable for the first stage UASB reactor were 0.5 mg/lday (76 microg DLD/g VSS.day) and 10 h, respectively, which resulted in the overall COD removal efficiency of 85%.  相似文献

The structures of microbial communities in lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for treating municipal wastewater with different ratios of COD soluble/COD total were studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA genes. The microbial structure of the inoculum sludge obtained from a full-scale UASB reactor of treating potato processing wastewater was compared with the structures of sludges collected from three lab-scale UASB reactors after eight months feeding with raw municipal wastewater, with CEPS (chemically enhanced primary sedimentation) pretreated municipal wastewater, and with a synthetic municipal sewage, respectively. Computer-aided numerical analysis of the DGGE fingerprints showed that the bacterial community underwent major changes. The sludges for treating raw and CEPS pretreated wastewater had very similar bacterial and archaeal communities (82%and 96% similarity) but were different from that for treating the synthetic sewage. Hence, despite similar % COD in the particulate form in the synthetic and the real wastewater, the two wastewaters were selected for different microbial communities. Prominent DGGE bands of Bacteria and Archaea were purified and sequenced. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the dominant archaeal bands found in the inoculum, and UASB sludge fed with raw sewage, CEPS pretreated wastewater, and synthetic sewage were closely associated with Methanosaeta concilii. In the UASB sludge fed with synthetic sewage, another dominant band associated with an uncultured archaeon 39-2 was found together with M. concilii.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to compare the performance of selected anaerobic high rate reactors operated simultaneously at 37?°C. The three reactors, namely upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor (UASB), hybrid of UASB reactor and anaerobic filter (anaerobic hybrid reactor – AHR) and anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), were inoculated with the anaerobic digested sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant and tested with synthetic wastewater. This wastewater contained sodium acetate and glucose with balanced nutrients and trace elements (COD 6000?mg?·?l?1). Organic loading rate (B v ) was increased gradually from an initial 0.5?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1 to 15?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1 in all the reactors. From the comparison of the reactors' performance, the lowest biomass wash-out resulted from ABR. In the UASB, significant biomass wash-out was observed at the B v 6?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1, and in the AHR at the B v 12?kg?·?m?3?·?d?1. The demand of sodium bicarbonate for pH maintenance in ABR was two times higher as for UASB and AHR. The efficiency of COD removal was comparable for all three reactors – 80–90%. A faster biomass granulation was observed in the ABR than in the other two reactors. This fact is explained by the kinetic selection of filamentous bacteria of the Methanotrix sp. under a high (over 1.5?g?·?l?1) acetate concentration.  相似文献

A simple, efficient and cost-effective method for municipal wastewater treatment is examined in this paper. The municipal wastewater is treated using an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor followed by flash aeration (FA) as the post-treatment, without implementing aerobic biological processes. The UASB reactor was operated without recycle, at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h and achieved consistent removal of BOD, COD and TSS of 60-70% for more than 12 months. The effect of FA on UASB effluent post-treatment was studied at different HRT (15, 30 and 60 min) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations (low DO = 1-2 mg/L and high DO = 5-6 mg/L). The optimum conditions for BOD, COD and sulfide removal were 30-60 min HRT and high DO concentration inside the FA tank. The final effluent after clarification was characterized by BOD and COD values of 28-35 and 50-58 mg/L, respectively. Sulfides were removed by more than 80%, but the fecal coliform only by ~2 log. The UASB followed by FA is a simple and efficient process for municipal wastewater treatment, except for fecal coliform, enabling water and nutrients recycling to agriculture.  相似文献

The biomass taken from AF, ABR, and UASB digesters treating municipal wastewater, swine waste and molassese stillage wastewater, municipal and molassese stillage wastewater respectively, were observed by light, epifluorescence microscope and scanning electron microscope. The prevalent methanogens in these digesters were Methanothrix. Exception for ABR carried out to treat swine waste, Methanosarcina with three forms of aggregations, cysts, and granules were presented in other digesters. A suggestion can be made that reactors with packing materials, such as, anaerobic filters, anaerobic contact beds and two-phase methanation digesters can be used to accumulate Methanosarcina due to their morphological, mu max, and Ks characteristics, in order to increase the wastewater treatment efficiency further.  相似文献

The kinetics of anaerobic treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater in batch and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors was investigated. Different concentrations of organic matter in slaughterhouse wastewater did not change the first order kinetics of the reaction. In batch digesters, methane and nitrogen production stopped after 30-40, 20-30 h, respectively, and in UASB reactors it was terminated after 30-40 days. The constant of velocity was 3.93 and 0.23 h(-1) respectively, for methane and nitrogen production. The yield coefficient, Yp was 343 and 349 ml CH4 per g of chemical oxygen demand at standard temperature and pressure conditions for batch reactors and UASB reactor, respectively.  相似文献

Removal of chlorophenols in sequential anaerobic-aerobic reactors   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Combination of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) and aerobic rotating biological contactor (RBC) reactors having higher biomass concentration and higher sludge retention time (SRT) was applied for the sequential treatment of priority pollutant chlorophenol containing wastewater. Target compounds 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) present in two simulated wastewaters at a concentration of 30 mg/l each individually were sequentially treated in continuous mode by combined UASB-I, RBC-I and combined UASB-II, RBC-II reactors, respectively after the acclimation of their biomass with the corresponding chlorophenol. Reactor combinations took 190 and 215 days for acclimation with 30 mg/l of 2-CP and 2,4-DCP respectively. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) studies showed that 12h HRT of UASB-I and 23 h HRT of RBC-I as well as 12h HRT of UASB-II and 28.8h HRT of RBC-II were the optimum combinations for the treatment of simulated wastewater containing 2-CP and 2,4-DCP respectively. Optimum HRT combinations produced 2-CP and 2,4-DCP effluent having corresponding chlorophenol concentration of below detectable limit (BDL) and 0.1 mg/l respectively. Half velocity coefficients (Ks) for 2-CP and 2,4-DCP biodegradation in UASB reactors were determined to be 5.07 mg 2-CP/l and 6.49 mg 2,4-DCP/l. Optimum ratio of substrate (chlorophenol): co-substrate (sodium acetate) was 1:100.  相似文献

In upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) digesters treating raw sewage at low temperatures, the sludge progressively lost methanogenic activity, indicating the possibility of methanogenic activity inhibition caused by wastewater constituents. To check this fact, batch and semi-continuous methanogenic toxicity assays were carried out with raw and centrifuged sewage. Permanent methanogenic toxicity on anaerobic sludge of approximately 50% was found when the sludge exposure to wastewater was renewed in a semi-continuous way. A stronger methanogenic inhibition of about 70-100% was observed when an active anaerobic sludge was exposed to mixed liquor from the UASB digester treating municipal wastewater. Suspended solids removal from sewage slightly reduced methanogenic toxicity. Effective concentration of municipal wastewater that caused a 50% reduction in methanogenic activity was estimated to be in the range of 150-200 mg CODl(-1). As methanogenic inhibition appeared to be related to remaining COD, higher methanogenic toxicity in digesters operating with low conversion efficiency will be expected.  相似文献

The treatment of the wastewater taken from a wool dyeing processing in a wool manufacturing plant was investigated using an anaerobic/aerobic sequential system. The process units consisted of an anaerobic UASB reactor and an aerobic CSTR reactor. Glucose, alkalinity and azo dyes were added to the raw acid dyeing wastewater in order to simulate the dye industry wastewater since the raw wastewater contained low levels of carbon, NaHCO3 and color through anaerobic/aerobic sequential treatment. The UASB reactor gave COD and color removals of 51–84% and 81–96%, respectively, at a HRT of 17 h. The COD and color removal efficiencies of the UASB/CSTR sequential reactor system were 97–83% and 87–80%, respectively, at a hydraulic retention time (HRTs) of 3.3 days. The aromatic amines (TAA) formed in the anaerobic stage were effectively removed in the aerobic stage.  相似文献

The use of anaerobic processes to treat low-strength wastewater has been increasing in recent years due to their favourable performance-costs balance. For optimal results, it is necessary to identify reactor configurations that are best suited for this kind of application. This paper reports on the comparative study carried out with two high-rate anaerobic reactor systems with the objective of evaluating their performances when used for the treatment of low-strength, complex wastewater. One of the systems is the commonly used up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The other is the up-flow staged sludge bed (USSB) system in which the reactor was divided longitudinally into 3, 5 and 7 compartments by the use of baffles. The reactors (9 l) were fed with a synthetic, soluble and colloidal waste (chemical oxygen demand (COD) < 1000 mg/l) and operated at 28°C and 24 h hydraulic retention time. Intermediate flow hydraulics, between plug-flow and completely-mixed, in the UASB and 7 stages USSB reactors allowed efficient degradation of substrates with minimum effluent concentrations. Low number of compartments in the USSB reactors increased the levels of short-circuiting thus reducing substrate removal efficiencies. All reactors showed high COD removal efficiencies (93–98%) and thus can be regarded as suitable for the treatment of low strength, complex wastewater. Staged anaerobic reactors can be a good alternative for this kind of application provided they are fitted with a large enough (≥7) number of compartments to fully take advantage of their strengths. Scale factors seem to have influenced importantly on the comparison between one and multi staged sludge-bed reactors and, therefore, observations made here could change at larger reactor volumes.  相似文献

This study was focused on several physico-chemical and biological treatment methods that may affect the reduction of the organic load in olive mill wastewater (OMW). In this study, removal of 95% of the phenolic compounds present in OMW was achieved using sand filtration and subsequent treatment with powdered activated carbon in a batch system. This pretreatment for OMW was found to enhance the anaerobic activity of the sludge in the batch system significantly. The efficiency of organic load removal achieved by the anaerobic treatment of untreated OMW in batch reactors with tap water dilution factors below 1:10, reached approximately 65% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. However, in the up-flow sludge anaerobic blanket (UASB) reactor, COD removal efficiency of 80–85% was reached at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days with an influent COD concentration of 40 g l−1 and organic loading rate (OLR)=8 g−1 COD l−1 per day.  相似文献

The performance and biomass retention of an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor treating liquid fraction of dairy manure has been investigated at several organic loading rates. Two identical UASB reactors were employed. The biomass of one UASB reactor (FBR) had previously been treated with a cationic polyacrylamide, the other reactor was operated as a control reactor (CR). At 3 and 2 days of HRT both reactors functioned similarly, but at 1.5 days HRT some differences were observed between both effluents. Mean COD(T) removal percentages were 83.4% and 76.5%; COD(VFA) values in effluents were 977 and 2682 mg l(-1) for the FBR and the CR respectively. The VSS initial value in both reactors was 25.66 g VSS, whereas after the experiment the quantities were 31.83 g VSS in the FBR and 23.18 g VSS in the CR reactors. Polymer addition resulted in a higher degree of biomass retention and better performance in the FBR reactor.  相似文献

Treatment of simulated wastewater containing 40 mg/l of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) was carried out in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor under methanogenic condition. The performance of this test UASB reactor was evaluated in terms of 4-CP removal. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and substrate:co-substrate ratio for the 4-CP removal was optimized by varying the influent flow rate (13-34.7 ml/min) and sodium acetate concentration (2-5 g/l), respectively. A control UASB reactor, which was not exposed to 4-CP was also operated under similar conditions. Organic loading rate (OLR) was varied in the range of 2-5.3 kg/m(3)/d and 1.7-4.2 kg/m(3)/d, respectively, for HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio studies, respectively. The optimum HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio for the removal of 4-CP was 12h and 1:75, respectively. Removal of 4-CP achieved at optimum HRT and substrate:co-substrate ratio was 88.3+/-0.7%. Removal of 4-CP occurred through dehalogenation and caused increase in chloride ion concentration in the effluent by 0.23-0.27 mg/mg 4-CP removed. The ring cleavage test showed the ortho mode of ring cleavage of 4-CP. Change in the elemental composition of the anaerobic biomass of UASB reactors was observed during the study period. Concentration of Ca(2+) increased in the biomass and this could be attributed to the biosoftening. Specific methanogenic activity of the sludge of control and test UASB reactor was 0.832 g CH(4) COD/g VSS d and 0.694 g CH(4) COD/g VSS d, respectively.  相似文献

The anaerobic degradation of terephthalate as sole substrate was studied in three anaerobic upflow reactors. Initially, the reactors were operated as upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors and seeded with suspended methanogenic biomass obtained from a full-scale down-flow fixed film reactor, treating wastewater generated during production of purified terephthalic acid. The reactors were operated at 30, 37, and 55 degrees C. The terephthalate removal capacities remained low in all three reactors (<4 mmolxL-1xday-1, or 1 g of chemical oxygen demand (COD)xL-1xday-1) due to limitations in biomass retention. Batch experiments with biomass from the UASB reactors revealed that, within the mesophilic temperature range, optimal terephthalate degradation is obtained at 37 degrees C. No thermophilic terephthalate-degrading culture could be obtained in either continuous or batch cultures. To enhance biomass retention, the reactors were modified to anaerobic hybrid reactors by introduction of two types of reticulated polyurethane (PUR) foam particles. The hybrid reactors were operated at 37 degrees C and seeded with a mixture of biomass from the UASB reactors operated at 30 and 37 degrees C. After a lag period of approximately 80 days, the terephthalate conversion capacity of the hybrid reactors increased exponentially at a specific rate of approximately 0.06 day-1, and high removal rates were obtained (40-70 mmolxL-1xday-1, or 10-17 g of CODxL-1xday-1) at hydraulic retention times between 5 and 8 h. These high removal capacities could be attributed to enhanced biomass retention by the development of biofilms on the PUR carrier material as well as the formation of granular biomass. Biomass balances over the hybrid reactors suggested that either bacterial decay or selective wash-out of the terephthalate fermenting biomass played an important role in the capacity limitations of the systems. The presented results suggest that terephthalate can be degraded at high volumetric rates if sufficiently long sludge ages can be maintained, and the reactor pH and temperature are close to their optima.  相似文献

Longterm performance and stability of two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors inoculated with granular sludge and treating a synthetic waste water containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) and phenol were studied. A similar system consisting of two fixed-film reactors inoculated with anaerobic digested sewage sludge were further studied. One reactor in each series received glucose in addition to the phenols. Dechlorination of PCP proceeded via two different dominating pathways in the respective reactor systems, suggesting that two distinct microbial populations were present, probably originating from the different inocula. Dechlorinating activity was maintained for more than 18 months in the UASB reactors and was generally higher than in the fixed-film reactors. In the fixed-film reactors, dechlorination of PCP suddenly decreased after 15.5 months of operation compared to earlier performance. Since no operational parameters had been changed, this indicated that the enriched culture was unstable on a longterm basis. Addition of yeast extract to the medium restored activity. General process stability in both reactor systems was clearly enhanced by the addition of glucose and was superior in the UASB/granular sludge system. The better performance and the higher stability in the UASB/granular sludge reactor highlights the importance of thorough screening of inocular prior to start-up of processes treating waste waters containing xenobiotic compounds.Abbreviations PCP pentachlorophenol - TeCP tetrachlorophenol - TCP trichlorophenol - DCP dichlorophenol - UASB upflow anaerobic sludge blanket - HRT hydraulic retention time  相似文献

The granulation process using synthetic wastewater containing pentachlorophenol (PCP) in four 1.1 l laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors was studied, and the anaerobic biotransformation of PCP during the granulation process investigated. After 110 days granular sludge was developed and up to 160 and 180 mg/l of PCP was added into the reactors R1 and R2, respectively, when they were inoculated with acclimated anaerobic sludge from an anaerobic digester of a citric acid plant. The inoculum was predominately composed of bacilli and filamentous bacteria. Granulation did not occur in reactors R3 and R4 which were inoculated with acclimated anaerobic sludge from aerobic sludge of the municipal sewage treatment plant which consisted mainly of cocci. Despite similar bacilli in the granule, the filamentous bacteria from reactor R1 were thicker than those of reactor R2. The granular sludge had a maximum diameter of 2.5 and 2.2 mm, and SMA of 1.44 and 1.32 gCOD/gTVS per day for reactors R1 and R2, respectively. Over 98% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate and 99% of PCP removal rate were achieved when reactors R1 and R2 were operated at PCP and COD loading rates of 150 and 7.5 g/l per day, respectively. H2-producing acetogens were the dominant anaerobes in the granular sludge.  相似文献

The feasibility of thermophilic (55-65 degrees C) and extreme thermophilic (70-80 degrees C) sulfate-reducing processes was investigated in three lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactors fed with either methanol or formate as the sole substrates and inoculated with mesophilic granular sludge previously not exposed to high temperatures. Full methanol and formate degradation at temperatures up to, respectively, 70 and 75 degrees C, were achieved when operating UASB reactors fed with sulfate rich (COD/SO4(2-)=0.5) synthetic wastewater. Methane-producing archaea (MPA) outcompeted sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in the formate-fed UASB reactor at all temperatures tested (65-75 degrees C). In contrast, SRB outcompeted MPA in methanol-fed UASB reactors at temperatures equal to or exceeding 65 degrees C, whereas strong competition between SRB and MPA was observed in these reactors at 55 degrees C. A short-term (5 days) temperature increase from 55 to 65 degrees C was an effective strategy to suppress methanogenesis in methanol-fed sulfidogenic UASB reactors operated at 55 degrees C. Methanol was found to be a suitable electron donor for sulfate-reducing processes at a maximal temperature of 70 degrees C, with sulfide as the sole mineralization product of methanol degradation at that temperature.  相似文献

The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was evaluated for its efficacy in decolourization and reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of real textile wastewater (RTW) under different operational conditions. The efficiency of UASB reactor in reducing COD was found to be over 90%. Over 92% of colour removal due to biodegradation was achieved. The activities of the anaerobic granules were not affected during the treatment of textile wastewater. Cocci-shaped bacteria were the dominant group over Methanothrix like bacteria in textile wastewater treatment. Alkalinity, volatile fatty acids (VFA) content and pH in effluents indicated that the anaerobic process was not inhibited by textile wastewater. It is concluded that UASB reactor system can effectively be used in the treatment of textile wastewater for the removal of colour and in the reduction of COD.  相似文献
