Patterns of tibia long bone growth were examined for the Libben Late Woodland and Bt-5 Late Archaic hunter-gatherer skeletal groups. Subadults included in the analyses ranged in age from birth to 10 years. The primary goals were to identify potential differences in relative tibia growth and evaluate the extent to which such differences were concordant with demographic and epidemiological characteristics of the two groups. Methods used were designed to minimize the shortcomings of unknown age and sex of the skeleton, small sample sizes, and population differences in adult size attained. Results showed that Bt-5 preadolescent growth performance and health status in general were superior to those of the Libben group. Modifications in the rate and timing of Libben tibia growth occurred early and were primarily restricted to the weaning period. It is suggested that high levels of infectious disease experienced in the first years of life at Libben played a substantial role in the etiology of early long bone growth retardation, a greater prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in the childhood years, and elevated levels of subadult morbidity and mortality compared to Bt-5. Paleodemographic, paleoepidemiological, and modern comparative population data that support these inferences are discussed. No evidence of chronic malnutrition owing to dietary inadequacy was observed for either group. Alternatively, higher population density and greater degree of sedentism alone may have been responsible for elevated disease loads at Libben compared to low levels that were observed for the seasonally mobile semisedentary Bt-5 hunter-gatherers.  相似文献

Comparison of different adult age estimation methods on the same skeletal sample with unknown ages could forward paleodemographic inference, while researchers sort out various controversies. The original aging method for the auricular surface (Lovejoy et al., 1985a) assigned an age estimation based on several separate characteristics. Researchers have found this original method hard to apply. It is usually forgotten that before assigning an age, there was a seriation, an ordering of all available individuals from youngest to oldest. Thus, age estimation reflected the place of an individual within its sample. A recent article (Buckberry and Chamberlain, 2002) proposed a revised method that scores theses various characteristics into age stages, which can then be used with a Bayesian method to estimate an adult age distribution for the sample. Both methods were applied to the adult auricular surfaces of a Pre-Columbian Maya skeletal population from Copan, Honduras and resulted in age distributions with significant numbers of older adults. However, contrary to the usual paleodemographic distribution, one Bayesian estimation based on uniform prior probabilities yielded a population with 57% of the ages at death over 65, while another based on a high mortality life table still had 12% of the individuals aged over 75 years. The seriation method yielded an age distribution more similar to that known from preindustrial historical situations, without excessive longevity of adults. Paleodemography must still wrestle with its elusive goal of accurate adult age estimation from skeletons, a necessary base for demographic study of past populations.  相似文献

Paleodemographic analyses based on estimates of skeletal age at death consistently report high levels of young adult mortality with few individuals living in excess of 50 years. Critics assert these data indicate systematic underaging of adults and justifiably remark that criteria for estimating skeletal age at death may be unreliable, age determinations are too frequently based on one or two criteria alone, and adult paleodemographic age profiles often mimic the age distribution of the modern population from which an age indicator's standards were originally derived. This study reports a series of tests based on well-documented biological aging phenomena that can be used to investigate potential effects of systematic underaging in adults, assuming the skeletal population is of sufficient size to permit such tests. These include patterns of third decade sternal clavicular epiphyseal fusion, multiple age and sex criteria associated with cortical bone dynamics, and fractures known to occur throughout the entire adult ages range. These phenomena are examined here for the Libben site skeletal population where adult age at death was determined by the multifactorial summary age technique. None of the biological criteria reported here were used in the Libben summary age analysis and thus serve as an independent test of accuracy in age determination. In addition, the summary age method has recently been applied to a series of modern skeletons of known age (Todd samples 1 and 2). Age standards for criteria employed with Libben and Todd 1 were identical. Since Todd 1 displayed underaging in older adults, a second Libben age distribution adjusted for Todd 1 bias was generated for comparison. A third Libben adult survivorship profile based on a Coale and Demeny West level 3 mortality experience, considered by some to be a more realistic model for skeletal populations, was produced for comparison. For all criteria examined, original Libben summary ages provided superior concordance with known patterns of biological aging in human populations. While Libben ages adjusted for Todd 1 bias were slightly better in the third decade, both Todd 1 adjusted and Coale and Demeny West level 3 age distributions produced unrealistic patterns of biological aging for individuals greater than 35 years. Human skeletal remains of 104 individuals from the late medieval (14th-18th century) Nova Raca cemetery, in continental Croatia, are described. Historic data from the parish Book of the Dead, relevant to a period in the early 19th century, suggest that females may have been under greater stress than males. To test this hypothesis, the skeletal material is analyzed for the presence and distribution of enamel hypoplasias and cribra orbitalia. Observations are also made on the presence and pattern of dental disease, skeletal infection, trauma, osteoarthritis, vertebral degenerative changes, and Schmorl's depression frequencies. The mortuary sample, consisting of 36 subadults and 68 adults, exhibits underrepresentation of subadults, and differential adult male/female mortality profiles. Peak female mortality is between 21-25 years, compared to peak male mortality between 31-35 years. Average adult female age at death is 29.9 years, compared to 34.1 years in adult males. Significant sex differences are present in the frequencies of enamel hypoplasia. Adult females have higher frequencies of hypoplastic teeth, and a larger number of defects in the teeth affected than in males. Subadults in the series also exhibit higher frequencies of hypoplastic teeth, and a larger number of defects in the teeth affected than in adults, documenting a relationship between enamel hypoplasia-causing stress events and reduced life expectancy. Significant sex differences are also present in dental pathology frequencies, possibly reflecting differences in resource access. Sex differences in vertebral osteoarthritis and Schmorl's depression frequencies may reflect differential activity patterns.  相似文献

Modal patterns of occlusal attrition are presented for the Libben population based on a sample of 332 adult dentitions. Maxillas and mandibles were reviewed independently by seriation prior to assessment of complete dentitions. The Spearman rank order coefficient for upper and lower dentitions was.96. Wear patterns are very similar to those reported by Murphy (1959a: Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 17:167–178) for Australian aborigines. There were no significant sexual differences in wear rate. Dental wear is concluded to be a highly reliable and important indicator of adult age at death for skeletal populations if seriation procedures are employed.  相似文献

We assess tooth‐based age criteria for African elephants developed by Laws in relation to known‐aged individuals in the Amboseli elephant population. Laws’s technique remains a robust and useful mechanism for age determination, although we suggest revisions to the oldest age categories. Blind age assignment to jaws of unknown sex using the Laws criteria resulted in misclassification of M4 and M5; measures overlapped too much to differentiate these teeth by sex. Sexes could be reliably distinguished after age 30 or XIX in tooth category by two measures: mandible thickness and width of the ascending ramus, but individuals of the same known age differed in tooth wear and progression rates. Such variation needs to be incorporated in the error assigned to tooth age categories. Ages at death of found jaws (n = 266) were similar to results of survival analysis from all demographic data (n = 2455), excluding calves whose jaws decompose because of weathering and scavengers. Jaw‐based models of age at death need correction for the inability to detect this early mortality, which artificially extends mean longevity by up to 6 years.  相似文献

Natural disasters can negatively affect primate population demography and social group structure. A clear understanding of these effects has important implications for wildlife conservation. The worst snow storms in nearly five decades hit portions of southern and central China between January 10 and February 6, 2008, presenting a unique opportunity to observe their immediate effects on a previously studied group of Hubei Golden Snub‐nosed Monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana hubeiensis) in temperate forests in Shennongjia Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China. We recorded social and demographic characteristics of the group before and after the snow storms. The average group size decreased from 270 individuals before the storms to 197 individuals after the storms, a reduction of 27.2%. Adult females (30.1%), juveniles (38.1%) and infants (55.4%) suffered higher mortality than did adult males (15.7%). Despite age and sex‐based differences in mortality, the ratios of adult males to adult females, adults to immatures and adult females to immatures remained similar before and after the storms. Accurate rib seriation is essential in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology for determination of minimum numbers of individuals, sequencing trauma patterns to the chest, and identification of central ribs for use in age estimation. We investigate quantitative methods for rib seriation based on three metric variables: superior (anterior) costo-transverse crest height (SCTCH), articular facet of the tubercle-to-angle length (AFTAL), and head-to-articular facet length (HAFL). The sample consists of complete but unseriated sets of ribs from 133 individuals from the documented (known age and sex) and undocumented skeletal collections of Christ Church Spitalfields, London. This research confirms the results of an earlier study (Hoppa and Saunders [1998] J. Forensic. Sci. 43:174-177) and extends it with the application of two new metric traits and further analyses of sex differences. Analyses of variance showed that SCTCH and AFTAL are significantly associated (P < 0.001) with rib number. Tukey tests of pairwise rib comparisons revealed that for two dimensions (SCTCH and AFTAL), the central ribs (3rd-6th) are significantly distinct from each other (P < 0.05). Using simple ranking of either the SCTCH or AFTAL traits, the proportion of correctly identified ribs within +/-1 position was 80%, compared to initial seriation using morphological methods (Dudar [1993] J. Forensic. Sci. 28:788-797; Mann [1993] J. Forensic. Sci. 28:151-155). Significant sex dimorphism was also identified for these two traits. Analysis of the HAFL trait produced somewhat equivocal results, suggesting that this variable is not reliable for rib seriation. The variable SCTCH proves to be the most useful dimension for seriation, and shows that all but the 7th-9th ribs can be distinguished from others in the sequence, with important results for the 4th rib, where ranking allowed identification in 86% of cases, consistent with morphological methods for intact ribs.  相似文献

In the Roman period, urban and rural ways of living were differentiated philosophically and legally, and this is the first regional study of these contrasting life‐ways. Focusing on frailty and mortality risk, we investigated how these differed by age, sex, and status, using coffin type as a proxy for social status. We employed skeletal data from 344 individuals: 150 rural and 194 urban (1st–5th centuries A.D.) from Dorset, England. Frailty and mortality risk were examined using indicators of stress (cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis, nonspecific periostitis, and enamel hypoplastic defects), specific metabolic and infectious diseases (rickets, scurvy, and tuberculosis), and dental health (carious lesions and calculus). These variables were studied using Chi‐square, Siler model of mortality, Kaplan–Meier analysis, and the Gompertz model of adult mortality. Our study found that overall, mortality risk and survivorship did not differ between cemetery types but when the data were examined by age, mortality risk was only significantly higher for urban subadults. Demographic differences were found, with urban cemeteries having more 0–10 and >35 year olds, and for health, urban cemeteries had significantly higher frequencies of enamel hypoplastic defects, carious lesions, and rickets. Interestingly, no significant difference in status was observed between rural and urban cemeteries. The most significant finding was the influence of the skeletal and funerary data from the Poundbury sites, which had different demographic profiles, significantly higher frequencies of the indicators of stress and dental health variables. Earlier weaning has often been suggested as a cause for population growth after the evolution of food production. However, evidence for weaning-time reduction is largely circumstantial. Collagen stable nitrogen- and carbon-isotope ratios from juvenile and adult burials from four sites in eastern North America were measured to estimate weaning onsets and durations before and after the appearance of intensive food production. Two preagricultural Late Archaic sites (Indian Knoll and Carlston Annis) are compared with two highly agricultural Middle Mississippian sites (Angel and Tinsley Hill). Isotopic data and paleodemographic measures of birth rates provide no evidence for changes in weaning behavior or fertility with the development of food production in the prehistoric Lower Ohio Valley. Birth rates and weaning behavior appear to have been roughly the same at all four sites. These results indicate that models attributing population growth after the appearance of food production to earlier weaning are not universally applicable.  相似文献

Predicting the responses of populations in changing environments is an important task for ecologists. Understanding the population dynamics of high-latitude breeding species is critical given the particularly rapid environmental changes that occur in these regions. Using long-term mark–resighting data acquired over 53-years in Pointe Géologie, Terre Adélie, Antarctica, we estimated age-specific demographic parameters and evaluated the effect of the environment on survival of a poorly known species, the cape petrel Daption capense. We then modeled the dynamics of this population using a life-history model and performed prospective and retrospective analyses to estimate the sensitivity of the population growth rate to demographic parameters, and to quantify their relative contribution. Survival of cape petrel increased with age, being 0.610 (±0.193) for juveniles, 0.739 (±0.158) for individuals from 2 to 4, and 0.920 (±0.031) for older individuals. Minimum age at first reproduction was 3 years old, the age at which all birds were recruited was 14 years, and mean age at first reproduction was 9.05 (±2.06) years. Adult survival increased over time and was positively correlated with the southern annular mode (SAM). The stochastic population growth rate was estimated at 1.019, and adult survival over age 5 made the largest contribution to variance of the population growth rate. Sensitivity analyses revealed that population regulation was mainly driven by the SAM. Our results suggest that despite the decrease in breeding success, the population of cape petrels at Pointe Géologie increased due to the increase in immature and adult survival.  相似文献

Visually seriated radiographs of the proximal femur, proximal humerus, clavicle, and calcaneus from 130 individuals from the Hamann-Todd collection were examined as indicators of skeletal age at death. The clavicle demonstrated the most consistent relationship to age in both sexes. The same radiographs were also seriated by size-normalized optical density as a means of establishing relative radiolucency. In this context, visual seriation proved superior. The four sites studied showed strong divergence in response to age. Since each was sampling bone response from the same individual, it is concluded that bone loss is highly site specific. This demonstrates the individual character of specific skeletal sites. Visual inspection of clavicular radiographs, seriated on a populational basis, provides age estimates that are comparable to anatomical age indicators and provides independent estimates of skeletal age when included in the summary age method (1985: Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 68:1–14).  相似文献

Colonies of a social spider Achaearanea wau (Theridiidae) from Papua, New Guinea have adult and juvenile sex ratios that are biased towards females, and this probably represents a primary bias at the egg stage. Adult sex ratios are less female-biased than are juvenile sex ratios, and both vary significantly among colonies. Adult sex ratios covary with colony size: small colonies have a larger proportion of males than large ones. The pattern of variation in adult sex ratio may be due to greater mortality of females than of males during maturation. Juvenile sex ratios do not covary with colony size, nor do they differ among populations. Colony size, however, does have a significant effect on survival and dispersal in colonies. I conclude, therefore, that a conditional sex ratio strategy, in which the primary sex ratio of the colony is adjusted to changing demographic patterns, does not occur in A. wau. I suggest that environmental heterogeneity acting on individual reproductive output may be responsible for the observed variation among colonies in juvenile sex ratios.  相似文献

A three-year study of the patterns of wounding in a group of stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) was conducted at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center Field Station. Wounds were classified as punctures, lacerations or abrasions. Data were analyzed to determine if patterns of wounding vary by age/sex class, body part or wound type. Results indicate that adult males receive significantly more total wounds than expected, based on their total time spent in the group. Adult males also receive more serious wounds than other age/sex classes. Low-ranking animals are wounded more often than high-ranking individuals. Moreover, the location of wounds within each age/sex class is non-random. Adult males receive a disproportionate number of wounds on the forequarters, but adult and immature females are wounded disproportionately on the hindquarters. Finally, age/sex classes differ in the number of wounds on individual body parts. Adult males receive more wounds on the head, arms and hands than other age/sex classes, but adult and immature females receive more wounds on the feet than other age/sex classes. These results demonstrate that wounding patterns are clearly non-random and depend on a variety of factors such as age, sex and dominance rank.  相似文献

Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation may vary in response to environmental stressors and introduce adaptive or maladaptive gene expression within and among wild bird populations. We examined the association between DNA methylation and demographic characteristics of the Louisiana Waterthrush Parkesia motacilla in territories with and without disturbance from shale gas development in a Central Appalachian watershed during 2013–2015. We also evaluated the degree to which an individual’s methylated state was subject to change across years in individuals that returned over the course of more than one breeding season (i.e. recaptures). Overall, population methylation differed between adult male and female Waterthrush where adult males generally had fewer methylated restriction sites. Methylation also differed between adult females and nestlings. Age influenced methylation in both adult males and females with a decrease in methylation with age, although adult female recaptures had increased methylation with age. Adult males were variably methylated between shale gas undisturbed and disturbed areas at a population and restriction site (i.e. loci) level, where restriction sites were predominately less methylated in shale gas-disturbed areas. Barium (Ba) and strontium (Sr) data from 2013 feather samples showed adult males had fewer methylated sites at higher concentrations of Ba and Sr, whereas nestlings displayed no correlation of methylation to Ba and Sr concentrations. Adult females displayed increased methylation with increased Sr, a trend also seen year to year in adult female recaptures. Overall, results of our study suggest sex-specific influences of shale gas development on gene expression that may affect long-term population survival and fitness.  相似文献

Critics of paleodemography have suggested that the science is so fraught with error that its demise must be close at hand. Among the problems suggested as unsolvable are representativeness of skeletal samples and inaccuray of skeletal aging techniques. A historical skeletal sample with supportive vital registration might afford the opportunity to test the validity of such criticism or at least to examine the extent of the above problems. In 1984, a skeletal sample of 296 individuals was excavated from a 19th century American poorhouse cemetery. Age at death was determined by macroscopic multivariate examination. Mortality records of 247 individuals who died during four years of the poorhouse's operation provide data for demographic comparisons with the skeletal sample. A comparison of life tables generated from each sample demostrates that there are no significant differences in the age at death structure, life expectancy (at birth: 30.7 in the mortality records and 32.6 from the skeletal sample), or survivorship between the two samples. Skeletal aging techniques can, therefore, provide a demographic picture that is similar in accuracy to that presented by vital registration records.  相似文献

For wild primates, demography studies are increasingly recognized as necessary for assessing the viability of vulnerable populations experiencing rapid environmental change. In particular, anthropogenic changes such as habitat loss and fragmentation can cause ecological and behavioral changes in small, isolated populations, which may, over time, alter population density and demographic structure (age/sex classes and group composition) in fragment populations relative to continuous forest populations. We compared our study population of Endangered black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) in 34 forest fragments around Palenque National Park (PNP), Mexico (62 groups, 407 individuals), to the adjacent population in PNP, protected primary forest (21 groups, 134 individuals), and to previous research on black howlers in fragments in our study area (18 groups, 115 individuals). We used χ2 and Mann–Whitney U tests to address the questions: (a) what is the current black howler demographic population structure in unprotected forest fragments around PNP? (b) How does it compare to PNP's stable, continuous population? (c) How has it changed over time? Compared to the PNP population, the fragment populations showed higher density, a significantly lower proportion of multimale groups, and significantly fewer adult males per group. The population's age/sex structure in the fragmented landscape has been stable over the last 17 years, but differed in a higher proportion of multifemale groups, higher density, and higher patch occupancy in the present. In the context of conservation, some of our results may be positive as they indicate possible population growth over time. However, long-term scarcity of adult males in fragments and associated effects on population demographic structure might be cause for concern, in that it may affect gene flow and genetic diversity. The scarcity of adult males might stem from males experiencing increased mortality while dispersing in the fragmented landscape, whereas females might be becoming more philopatric in fragments.  相似文献

本文分别用Fels和RWT法评定了4902对2—17岁儿童青少年的手腕部和膝部骨龄。男女各年龄组骨龄的平均绝对差值为0.34—0.87岁,标准差为0.31—0.68岁。8—11岁前,这两个值往往随年龄增加;14岁前,男性一般大于女性。最大差值范围为1.45—2.99岁,其年龄变化往往不规律,但11岁前(男)和9岁前(女)常常增加。手腕部和膝部骨龄之间所存在的较大的绝对差值不能完全用观察误差加以解释。两部位的骨龄不能互相替代。所以,用骨龄预测成人身高和确定干骺固定术的时间,至少在5%的儿童中明显地受到骨龄部位的影响。  相似文献

Long-term demographic observations on a large-sized unit-group of chimpanzees in the Mahale Mountains, Tanzania, are summarized. The unit-group, the M group, contains over 100 individuals, which makes it the largest unit-group ever reported. The age-sex composition, natality, mortality and transfers of the M group are analyzed. An attempt is made to illustrate an age-sex pyramid of the group by estimating the ages of all the individuals in the group. The results reveal that: (1) the mortality rate of the male infants within 1 year almost doubled that of female infant; (2) adult male to adult female ratio of the M group is considerably higher than any other unit-groups elsewhere; and (3) the M group contains a relatively large number of old animals over 40 years of age, suggesting that the longevity of wild chimpanzees might be greater than estimated so far.  相似文献
