Sixty of the 65 dairy farms with cubicle houses in the Norwegian county of Oppland were included in a field study of the management of calving in 1990. The farmers recorded the location of the cow when giving birth, farmer presence and whether assistance was given during calving, occurrence of suckling, and time after birth when cow and calf were separated. Such data were recorded for a total of 1125 calvings. About 10% occurred on pasture, while 78% of the remaining calvings took place in the cubicle-equipped section. Thirteen percent calved in a calving pen, the remaining cows being tethered at the time of calving. Thirty-two percent of the calvings took place in houses lacking a calving pen altogether. Farmers were present during 41% of the calvings. Suckling most frequently occurred after pasture calvings, and was least frequent after calvings within the cubicle-equipped section of the cowhouse. Injuries to the calf caused by trampling or contact with fittings etc. were rare, and no more common in association with calving in the cubicle-equipped section than with calving taking place with the cow isolated from the rest of the herd. All calves were removed from their dams within 24 h after birth.  相似文献

Transfer of sufficient immunoglobulin G (IgG) to the neonatal calf via colostrum is vital to provide the calf with immunological protection and resistance against disease. The objective of the present study was to determine the factors associated with both colostral IgG concentration and colostral weight in Irish dairy cows. Fresh colostrum samples were collected from 704 dairy cows of varying breed and parity from four Irish research farms between January and December 2011; colostral weight was recorded and the IgG concentration was determined using an ELISA method. The mean IgG concentration in the colostrum was 112 g/l (s.d. = 51 g/l) and ranged from 13 to 256 g/l. In total, 96% of the samples in this study contained >50 g/l IgG, which is considered to be indicative of high-quality colostrum. Mean colostral weight was 6.7 kg (s.d. = 3.6 kg) with a range of 0.1 to 24 kg. Factors associated with both colostral IgG concentration and colostral weight were determined using a fixed effects multiple regression model. Parity, time interval from calving to next milking, month of calving, colostral weight and herd were all independently associated with IgG concentration. IgG concentration decreased (P < 0.01) by 1.7 (s.e. = 0.6) g/l per kg increase in the colostral weight. Older parity cows, cows that had a shorter time interval from calving to milking, and cows that calved earlier in spring or in the autumn produced colostrum with higher IgG concentration. Parity (P < 0.001), time interval from calving to milking (P < 0.01), weight of the calf at birth (P < 0.05), colostral IgG concentration (P < 0.01) and herd were all independently associated with colostral weight at the first milking. Younger parity cows, cows milked earlier post-calving, and cows with lighter calves produced less colostrum. In general, colostrum quality of cows in this study was higher than in many previous studies; possible reasons include use of a relatively low-yielding cow type that produces low weight of colostrum, short calving to colostrum collection interval and grass-based nutritional management. The results of this study indicate that colostral IgG concentration can be maximised by reducing the time interval between calving and collection of colostrum.  相似文献

Seventy-six Brahman cows and first-calf heifers ranging in age from three to five or more years were used to determine the effects of restricted suckling on postpartum ovarian activity and uterine involution. At 30 days postcalving, cows were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1)normal suckling (34 cows) and 2)twice-daily suckling (42 cows). The cows were examined by rectal palpation weekly from parturition until the onset of the breeding season. The average interval from parturition to the presence of the first follicle larger than 10 mm (PPFI) was 36.0 +/- 1.0 days, and twice-daily suckling decreased PPFI length 8.1 days (P < 0.01); likewise, first- and second-calf heifers tended to have longer PPFI length (P < 0.05) than cows with three or more calvings. The average interval from parturition to first corpus luteum (PPCLI) was 59.0 +/- 2.0 days. PPCLI was affected by the age (P < 0.05) and weight of the cow at 30 days postpartum (P < 0.10). The average interval from parturition to first estrus (PPEI) was 68.0 +/- 5.0 days. PPEI was affected by suckling (P < 0.10) and month of parturition (P < 0.05). The average interval from parturition to uterine involution was 33.0 +/- 1.0 days. Uterine involution was influenced by month of calving (P < 0.01) and age of the cow (P < 0.05).  相似文献

In most studies on beef cattle longevity, only the cows reaching a given number of calvings by a specific age are considered in the analyses. With the aim of evaluating all cows with productive life in herds, taking into consideration the different forms of management on each farm, it was proposed to measure cow longevity from age at last calving (ALC), that is, the most recent calving registered in the files. The objective was to characterize this trait in order to study the longevity of Nellore cattle, using the Kaplan–Meier estimators and the Cox model. The covariables and class effects considered in the models were age at first calving (AFC), year and season of birth of the cow and farm. The variable studied (ALC) was classified as presenting complete information (uncensored = 1) or incomplete information (censored = 0), using the criterion of the difference between the date of each cow's last calving and the date of the latest calving at each farm. If this difference was >36 months, the cow was considered to have failed. If not, this cow was censored, thus indicating that future calving remained possible for this cow. The records of 11 791 animals from 22 farms within the Nellore Breed Genetic Improvement Program (‘Nellore Brazil’) were used. In the estimation process using the Kaplan–Meier model, the variable of AFC was classified into three age groups. In individual analyses, the log-rank test and the Wilcoxon test in the Kaplan–Meier model showed that all covariables and class effects had significant effects (P < 0.05) on ALC. In the analysis considering all covariables and class effects, using the Wald test in the Cox model, only the season of birth of the cow was not significant for ALC (P > 0.05). This analysis indicated that each month added to AFC diminished the risk of the cow's failure in the herd by 2%. Nonetheless, this does not imply that animals with younger AFC had less profitability. Cows with greater numbers of calvings were more precocious than those with fewer calvings.  相似文献

Two contrasting replacement strategies are used by Irish beef farmers to select replacement females – animals sourced from within the suckler beef herd and sourced from the dairy herd. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of replacement strategy (i.e. beef v. beef×dairy (BDX)) on cow and calf performance using data from the national beef database across a range of beef and dairy breeds. The association between replacement strategy and calving difficulty score, calving interval, weaning weight, weaning price and all carcass traits was investigated using a mixed model. The effect of replacement strategy on cow survival, calving dystocia and calf perinatal mortality was quantified using logistic regression. Beef cows were older (10.92 days; P<0.001) at their first calving, but were 1.15 times (P<0.01) more likely to survive to a subsequent lactation compared with BDX cows. Calving interval was 1.53 days shorter (P<0.001) for BDX compared with beef cows. Greater calving difficulty and calving dystocia was associated with beef cows (P<0.001) relative to BDX. However, BDX were 1.36 times (P<0.001) more likely to have a dead calf at birth relative to beef cows. Calves weaned from BDX were heavier (18.49 kg; P<0.001) at weaning, reached slaughter 12.8 days earlier (P<0.001), had 7.99 kg heavier carcass (P<0.001) and a greater fat score (P<0.001) compared with the progeny of beef cows. Beef cow progeny had a superior conformation score (0.5; P<0.001) and achieved a greater price per kilogram (P<0.001) compared with progeny from BDX. Beef cull cows had a heavier carcass (5.58 kg), superior carcass conformation, greater carcass price per kilogram and greater overall carcass value (P<0.001) than BDX. Results from this study show that replacement strategy is of fundamental importance depending on the type of system implemented by farmers and consideration must be given to the traits of importance within the context of the individual production system.  相似文献

Information on weaning techniques in the tropics is scarce, particularly regarding the long-term effect of temporary early cow–calf separation or restricted suckling. Therefore, we studied the effects of these two handling practices on well-being and performance at 150 days postpartum in fifteen zebu cow–calf pairs randomly assigned to three treatments. Continuous suckling (CS) where calves remained with their dams from birth to weaning; restricted suckling (RS) calves were allowed to suckle 30 min/day from Day 34 until weaning at Day 150 and kept separated the rest of the time; temporary separation (TS) calves were separated for 72 h from their dams from Day 33 to 36 but remained with their dams the rest of the time. Blood samples and behavioral data were collected on Days 32–36 (1st period) and 149–153 (2nd period). In the 1st period, a greater percentage of RS and TS calves were observed close to the fence line (< 10 m) that separated them from their dams (P < 0.0001) and vocalized more than CS calves (P < 0.0001), while in the 2nd period, RS calves had the highest cortisol concentration and vocalization rate (P < 0.05). Similarly, during the 1st period, a greater percentage of RS and TS cows were observed close to the fence line than CS cows (P < 0.0001), with TS cows vocalizing the most (P = 0.001). In the 2nd period, RS cows had greater cortisol concentration than TS (P = 0.037) and CS cows (P = 0.003). More TS and CS cows than RS were observed close to the fence line (P = 0.03 and P = 0.05). On Day 150, TS calves and cows vocalized more than RS and CS animals (P < 0.0001). Before calf–cow separation, 27 out of 45 cows were cycling (CS = 10; RS = 6; TS = 11). After separation, 12 of the remaining 18 cows resumed ovarian activity (CS = 3; RS = 5; TS = 4), and all cows were cycling after estrous synchronization treatment. The pregnancy rate was similar between CS, RS, and TS (60, 53, and 60% respectively). In conclusion, temporary separation increased calf distress response to definitive weaning even four months later, while restricted suckling seemed to reduce it.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting secondary sex ratio (SSR) in Iranian Holsteins. Data of 942,941 Holstein calving events from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran, recorded between January 1996 and December 2007, were used in the analysis. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to model the logit of the probability of a male calf being born. Male births accounted for 49.6% of the total observations. The ratio of males to females varied from 52.5:47.5 in calving year 1996-1999 (odds ratio (OR) = 1.18; P < 0.0001), to 48.5:51.5 in calving year 2004-2007. The greatest occurrence of male births was observed in spring (OR = 1.02; P < 0.0001), and the lowest incidence of male births was for summer or fall calvings. Also, the frequency of male births decreased from parity 1 to parity 4 and beyond (P < 0.0001; OR = 1.11). The greatest number of sires had the SSR equal to 0.5 with a minimum SSR of 32% while the maximum was 97%. Among cows that had a male birth, the chance of delivering a male calf again was 25.5% when cows had delivered a male once (OR = 1.14; P < 0.0001), and 12.7% if a male calf was delivered twice by a cow. This indicated that characteristics peculiar to the dam influence the sex of her offspring and suggests some degree of repeatability of calf sex within cows.  相似文献

Induction of twinning by ipsilateral nonsurgical transfer of two frozen-thawed Japanese Black bovine embryos to each of 20 Holstein and 26 Japanese Black cows, that had been kept under a stable in private farm conditions, was examined. The cows were monitored every 20 days from Day 25 to Day 65 of gestation for pregnancy and fetus survival (estrus is Day 0). Seventy-five per cent (15 of 20), 65.0% (13 of 20) or 60.0% (12 of 20) and 61.5% (16 of 26), 53.8% (14 of 26) or 50.0% (13 of 26) of Japanese Black cows were diagnosed pregnant at 25, 45 and 65 days after transfer by ultrasonic echography. Embryonic losses were observed between Days 25 and 65 in 29.2% (7) Holstein and 31.8% (7) Japanese Black cows. The twin pregnancy rate in Holstein and Japanese Black cows decreased with time; 60.0% (9 of 15) vs. 37.5% (6 of 16) at Day 25; 53.8% (7 of 13) vs. 28.6% (4 of 14) at Day 45 and 41.7% (5 of 12) vs. 15.4% (2 of 13) at Day 65. At calving, Holstein cows produced five sets of twins and seven single calves, and Japanese Black cows two sets of twins and 11 single calves. The twinning rate in Holstein cows was higher (P < 0.05) than that in Japanese Black cows, 41.7% (5 of 12) vs. 15.4% (2 of 13). The calf birth weight in Holsteins was heavier (P < 0.05) than that in Japanese Black dams (24.5 kg, 33.6 kg vs. 19.3 kg, 25.5 kg for twin and single calves). The placental weight in Holstein dams calving twins was heavier than that in Holstein dams calving a single calf or in Japanese Black dams calving either twins or a single calf (6.6 kg vs. 3.5 kg, 4.6 kg or 2.8 kg). The number of placentome in Holstein dams calving twins was also higher (P < 0.05) than that in Holstein dams calving a single calf or Japanese Black dams (103.5 vs. 41.8, 67.9, 33.0). The number of placentome was approximately double in dams calving twins than that of dams calving a single calf.  相似文献

Data on 2375 calvings in 726 Murrah buffalo cows were analysed for the period 1968 to 1979 on two state farms (Ridiyagama and Polonnaruwa) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. The mean ages at first calving were 51.0 (S.D. 8.6) and 52.1 (S.D. 10.5) months, the calving intervals 530.6 (S.D. 168.2) and 538.6 (S.D. 166.7) days, and the repeatabilities of calving intervals 0.36 ± 0.02 and 0.43 ± 0.02 for the two farms, respectively. The calving interval was significantly influenced (P ? 0.01) by the individual cow, year and season of conception, and parity. Conception during January to March led to the shortest calving interval, and during October to December to the longest. The highest percentage of conceptions occurred some 2–5 months after the peak rainfall.  相似文献

In a previous study from 2014 it was found that US Holstein cows that gave birth to heifer calves produced more milk than cows having bull calves. We wanted to assess whether this is also true for Danish cattle. Data from 578 Danish Holstein herds were analysed with a mixed effect model and contrary to the findings in the US, we found that cows produced higher volumes of milk if they had a bull calf compared to a heifer calf. We found a significantly higher milk production of 0.28% in the first lactation period for cows giving birth to a bull calf, compared to a heifer calf. This difference was even higher when cows gave birth to another bull calf, so having two bull calves resulted in a difference of 0.52% in milk production compared to any other combination of sex of the offspring. Furthermore, we found that farmer assisted calvings were associated with a higher milk yield. Cows with no farmer assistance or with veterinary assistance during the most recent calving produced less milk. There were also indications that dams would favor a bull fetus by decreasing milk production during the second pregnancy if the calf born in the first parity was a heifer. We hypothesize that size of calves is a confounding factor for milk production. However, calving weight was not available in the present data set to test this hypothesis.  相似文献

Currently, a trend toward the commercialization of dromedary milk associated with recent intensive rearing systems has starting worldwide which impose constraints on animals affecting their behavioral repertoires and welfare status. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dam parity and calf sex on parturition, neonatal, and maternal behaviors in stabled Maghrebi dairy camels (Camelus dromedarius). Thirty-six (primiparas N = 10; multiparas N = 26) periparturient females were kept under video surveillance using a digital IR camera and 24-h sessions were chosen to assess calving, maternal, and neonatal behaviors in calving pens. Duration of restlessness, process of giving birth, and expulsion of fetal membranes were assessed. After first suckling, dams and their calves were moved into an individual enclosure to assess maternal behavior at 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7 d postpartum. Behavior was assessed using a camcorder for 30 min after 1 h of young separation in an adjacent enclosure. Results showed an effect of parity on the duration of the birth process which was longer for primiparous than multiparous camels (P = 0.034). During this stage, primiparous females tended to raise their tails more often (P = 0.054) and spent more time standing (P = 0.001) than multiparous camels. Neonatal behavior was affected by calf sex. Female newborns took less time to raise their heads (P = 0.041) and to stand up (P = 0.048) for the first time and were the earliest to suckle their dams (P = 0.032). Multiparous dams stood up sooner (P = 0.019) after calving and suckled their calves earlier (P = 0.043) than primiparous dams. They emitted more bleats and exhibited more sniffing during the first week postpartum than primiparas. During the first postpartum week, both primiparas and multiparas showed a decrease in the total number of bleats (P < 0.001), low-pitch bleats (P < 0.001), and high-pitch bleats (P < 0.001), in sniffing frequency (P < 0.001) and sniffing duration (P < 0.001). This is the first study to describe in detail the calving, maternal, and neonatal behaviors of dromedary camels and to show the influence of parity and calf sex. Maternal care toward the newborn calf exhibited by a high level of bleating and sniffing activities in the first 2 days suggest that they play an important role in the establishment of mother–young relationship.  相似文献

Continuous observations of 82 individually penned Friesian cows and their calves were made during the first 6 h post partum. The behaviour observed was similar to that described for wild ungulates of the ‘hider’ type. Cows showed a marked decrease in calf-directed activities with time after parturition. This was more pronounced in older animals, which recommenced ingestive behaviour sooner. The incidence of licking and other maternal behaviour depends upon the characteristics of the calf and upon the state of the mother. Close proximity between cow and calf was maintained, in small calving pens, by the mother at the first three calvings but by the calf after these. The eating of the afterbirth is considered to be anti-predator behaviour. Calves of primiparous dams spent more time suckling and suckled from more quarters than did calves of older cows. Primiparous dams showed a higher incidence of abnormal maternal behaviour.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the individual ad libitum intake of mineral mix by beef cows managed under a year-long, fall-calving, forage-based production regimen and (2) if Se form in the mineral mix affected the blood Se concentrations of cows and suckling calves. Twenty-four late-gestation (6 to 8 months) Angus-cross cows (2.7?±?0.8 years; body weight [BW]?=?585?±?58 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned (n?=?8) to a mineral supplement treatment (TRT) containing 35 ppm Se as either inorganic (ISe; sodium selenite), organic (OSe; Sel-Plex®), or a 1:1 combination of ISe/OSe (MIX). Cows commonly grazed a 10.1-ha predominately tall fescue pasture and had individual ad libitum access to TRT using in-pasture Calan gates. Cows calved from August to November and calves had common ad libitum access to creep feed and a mineral supplement that lacked Se. Cow jugular blood was taken at 28-day intervals (13 periods) and calf blood was taken with cows from birth through weaning. Individual cow mineral mix (mean?=?54.0?±?7.0 g/day, range?=?97.3 to 27.9?±?7.4 g/day) and Se (mean?=?1.82?±?0.25 mg/day, range?=?3.31 to 0.95?±?0.25 mg/day) intakes were affected by period (P?<?0.0001), but not by cow Se TRT (P?>?0.30). Cow blood Se (0.109 to 0.229?±?0.01 μg/mL) was affected (P?<?0.002) by period, Se form, and their interaction, with ISe?< MIX for periods 8 and 11, ISe?<?OSe for all periods except period 1, and MIX?<?OSe for periods 2 to 4, 7, 8, 10, and 12. Calf blood Se (in micrograms Se per milliliter) was correlated with cow blood Se and affected (P?<?0.0001) by cow Se TRT, with ISe (0.07 to 0.11)?<?MIX (0.10 to 0.15)?=?OSe (0.16 to 0.19). These data reveal that (1) mean supplemental ad libitum cow mineral intake was 36 % less than the typical formulation intake expectations (85 g/day) and, correspondingly, mean supplemental Se intake was 33 % less than that allowed by the FDA and (2) cow Se TRT differentially affected both cow and calf blood Se concentrations, resulting in adequate concentrations for all cows but inadequate concentrations for ISe calves.  相似文献

Black vultures (Coragyps atratus) are often present near calving sites, and under this situation they may play a positive role by removing animal carcasses and afterbirth or a negative role by attacking neonate calves or disturbing cow–calf behaviours following parturition. Cow–calf behaviour was recorded over a 4-year study period from a total of 300 births involving 200 Nellore, 54 Guzerat, 20 Gyr and 26 Caracu cows. The calving site in relation to the location of the herd, considering cow–calf pairs within, close or distant to the herd, the presence of vultures and the behaviour of cows and calves were recorded instantaneously, at 5-min interval. On average, vultures were present at 80% of the calving sites. The frequency of vultures present at calving sites was dependent on the years for the Nellore herd, increasing from 1998 to 2003. When vultures were present, the time that the cow was in contact with its calf decreased, and the percentage of time that the cow was standing still increased. Vultures were observed pecking cows and their neonates during 34.1% of all recordings. However, in only two cases pecking injuries were actually observed on calves that were noted to be very weak. The preliminary results suggest that although black vultures cannot be characterized as a predator of neonate calves, they sometimes attack neonate calves and their presence near the calving sites alter the behaviours of cows and calves.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to examine 1) the effect of parity of dam and season of birth on the incidence of twins in Holstein-Friesian cattle in a warm, dry climate and 2) the sex ratio, gestation period and birth weight of calves born. Natural calvings (n = 24,843) from nine dairy farms in Saudi Arabia were evaluated over an 8-year period. The calendar year was divided into six bimonthly intervals to identify a possible seasonal effect on the number of natural twins born (twinning rate). The twinning rate increased (P < 0.05) from 1.0% (103 10,094 ) at first calving to 8.0% (1,178 14,749 ) for all the subsequent calvings. The twinning rate was similar with the second calving (P(2)) at 7.0% (417 5,929 ), the third calving (P(3)) at 7.5% (218 2,896 ), and the fourth calving (P(4)) at 7.8% (147 1,864 ). Correspondingly, cows having >/= five calves had a higher (P < 0.01) twinning rate at 9.0% (164 1,805 ) than cows with too, three or four calvings collectively at 7.3% (782 10,689 ). The seasonal effect on twinning rate was significant within all parity calvings except in primiparous females. The peak twinning rate occurred in the third season interval (May/June) at 9.3% (66 708 ) with P(2), at 13.0% (34 262 ) with P(3), at 13.8% (27 196 ) with P(4), and at 12.5% (23 184 ) with P(5) females. The male to female ratio was different (P < 0.01) for multiparous females (55:46; n = 12,305). The ratio of males to females (55:45) was also different (P < 0.01) for all twin pairs (n = 1,151), evaluated in the study. The gestation period for cows with single calves was 8.5 days longer (P < 0.05) than that of cows carrying twin calves. The birth weight of single calves was 13.1 kg greater (P < 0.05) than that of twin calves. The reason for the marked increase in the twinning rate during the warmest months may be explained by greater embryo mortality in the hot vs cool months.  相似文献

A total of 135 postpartum suckled zebu cows were assigned randomly at calving to two treatments: cows exposed to vasectomised bulls (Mature Bull Exposure, MBE) and cows not exposed to bulls (No Bull Exposure, NBE) for a period of 150 days postpartum. This study was conducted to determine the influence of bull biostimulation, season and parity on postpartum reproductive performance of Bos indicus cattle. The trials were conducted in two seasons: cows calving in the dry season and cows calving in the rainy season. Cows with an increase in serum progesterone (P(4)) concentration of >1 ng/ml from the weekly blood samples were used to analyse the number of days from calving to the time of resumption of ovarian activity. The introduction of vasectomised bulls shortened the postpartum anoestrus in cattle following calving. Mean interval from calving to resumption of ovarian activity for the MBE cows was 71.7 days, which was significantly earlier following calving than the NBE cows with a duration of 77.8 days. By 60 to 80 days postpartum, the proportion of cows at resumption of postpartum activity for MBE cows was greater than for the NBE cows.Mean interval from calving to resumption of ovarian activity for cows that calved in the dry season was 71.3 days, which was significantly earlier than for cows that calved in the rainy season (78.6 days). At 60 days postpartum, the proportion of cows at resumption of postpartum ovarin activity for cows that calved in the dry season was greater than the cows that calved in the rainy season. Mean interval from parturition to resumption of ovarian activity for cows with three to five calvings was 65.1 days, which was significantly earlier than the value of 71. 2 days for cows with one to two calvings. By 60 to 80 days postpartum, the proportion of cows at onset of ovarian activity for cows with three to five calvings was greater than those cows with one to two calvings. Cows that calved in the dry season completed uterine involution by 24.4 days, which was significantly shorter than the duration of 26.5 days for cows that calved in the rainy season. Cows with three to five calvings completed uterine involution earlier than those with one to two calvings. It is concluded that bull-cow biostimulation influences reproductive activity in the cow possibly through olfactory cues (pheromones).  相似文献

Small East African Zebu cows (n = 120) which calved during the dry season were used to determine the effects of postpartum nutritional supplementation and suckling intensity on body weight, body condition score, reproductive performance and on calf mortality and preweaning growth performance. Cows were allocated based on calving body weight to either receive a supplementary feed of molasses blocks containing 10% urea or to serve as controls and to be grazed only. Within nutritional groups, cows were further assigned either to continuous suckling or to restricted suckling twice daily. Intact bulls were introduced 21 days after the first cow had calved, and data were collected for 8 months. Calving body weight and body condition score of dams ranged from 186 to 192 kg and from 3.8 to 4.2 and did not differ among the treatment groups. Supplementary feeding significantly (P<0.05) reduced calf mortality from 40 to 20%, while restricted suckling reduced mortality by 13% from 36 to 23%. Body weight and body condition score did not vary between groups during the supplementation period. Over the 8-month period, 65% of supplemented and 53% of control cows exhibited estrus (P>0.05). A significantly (P<0.05) karger percentage of restricted suckled cows showed estrus than of continuously suckled cows (74 vs 42%). The postpartum estrus interval was shorter by 54 days in supplemented than in control cows and by 13 days in restricted than in continuously suckled cows. The pregnancy rate was higher in supplemented than in control cows (37 vs 33%; P>0.05) and in restricted than in continuously suckled (46 vs 22%; P>0.05) cows.  相似文献

Multiparous Angus×Simmental cows (n=54, 5.22±2.51 years) with male progeny were fed one of two diets supplemented with either dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) or soybean meal (CON), from calving until day 129 postpartum (PP) to determine effects of excess protein and fat on cow performance, milk composition and calf growth. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric and consisted of rye hay and DDGS (19.4% CP; 8.76% fat), or corn silage, rye hay and soybean meal (11.7% CP; 2.06% fat). Cow–calf pairs were allotted by cow and calf age, BW and breed. Cow BW and body condition score (BCS; P⩾0.13) were similar throughout the experiment. A weigh-suckle-weigh was performed on day 64 and day 110±10 PP to determine milk production. Milk was collected on day 68 and day 116±10 PP for analysis of milk components. Milk production was unaffected (P⩾0.75) by dietary treatments. Milk urea nitrogen was increased at both time points in DDGS compared with CON cows (P<0.01). Protein was decreased (P=0.01) and fat was increased (P=0.01) in milk from DDGS compared with CON cows on day 68 PP. Compared to CON, DDGS decreased medium chain FA (P<0.01) and increased long chain FA (P<0.01) at both time points. Saturated FA content of milk was decreased (P<0.01) at both time-points in DDGS compared with CON cows, which resulted in an increase (P<0.01) in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated FA, including cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid. Daily gain of the DDGS calves was increased (P=0.01) compared with CON calves, resulting in heavier BW on day 129 (P=0.01). Heavier BW of DDGS calves was maintained through weaning (P=0.01). Timed-artificial insemination (TAI) rates were greater for cows fed DDGS compared with cows fed CON (P<0.02), but dietary treatment had no effect on overall pregnancy rates (P=0.64). In summary, feeding DDGS to lactating beef cows did not change cow BW or BCS, but did improve TAI rates and altered milk composition compared with CON. As a result, male progeny from cows fed DDGS during lactation had greater average daily gain and were heavier at day 129 and at weaning compared with male progeny from cows fed a control diet.  相似文献

Providing the neonatal calf with a sufficient quantity and quality of colostrum may optimise future health, performance and reduce the risk of morbidity. A 6-month double blind trial with 80 prepartum dairy cows was conducted to determine if supplementation with mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) influences colostrum quality, quantity and subsequent calf performance. The Holstein cross Friesian 80 cows (no heifers) were allocated into a control and treatment group at the point of drying off by previous lactation number and yield. The control and treatment group were fed the same commercial standard dry cow diet throughout the trial supplemented with a mineral concentrate without or with 1.33% MOS, respectively. Cows were milked out of colostrum within 40 min of calving prior to calf suckling, weight was recorded. Mannan oligosaccharide fed cows produced significantly more colostrum on first milking (7.5 kg, SEM±0.69) compared with cows fed without MOS (5.6 kg, SEM±0.43). The immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations (control 53.7 IgG g/l, SEM±5.8 and MOS of 42.7 IgG g/l, SEM±4.9) and total mass of IgG did not differ between treatments. No significant observable MOS-derived effect on calf health or weight gain occurred during the study.  相似文献
