Two population oscillations dominate terrestrial community dynamics in northern Canada. In the boreal forest, the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) fluctuates in cycles with an 8-10 year periodicity and in tundra regions lemmings typically fluctuate in cycles with a 3-4 year periodicity. I review 60 years of research that has uncovered many of the causes of these population cycles, outline areas of controversy that remain and suggest key questions to address. Lemmings are keystone herbivores in tundra ecosystems because they are a key food resource for many avian and mammalian predators and are a major consumer of plant production. There remains much controversy over the role of predation, food shortage and social interactions in causing lemming cycles. Predation is well documented as a significant mortality factor limiting numbers. Food shortage is less likely to be a major limiting factor on population growth in lemmings. Social interactions might play a critical role in reducing the rate of population growth as lemming density rises. Snowshoe hares across the boreal forest are a key food for many predators and their cycles have been the subject of large-scale field experiments that have pinpointed predation as the key limiting factor causing these fluctuations. Predators kill hares directly and indirectly stress them by unsuccessful pursuits. Stress reduces the reproductive rate of female hares and is transmitted to their offspring who also suffer reduced reproductive rates. The maternal effects produced by predation risk induce a time lag in the response of hare reproductive rate to density, aiding the cyclic dynamics. 相似文献

We present the spontaneous causes of mortality for 137 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) over a 35‐year period. A record review of the pathology database was performed and a primary cause of mortality was determined for each chimpanzee. The most common causes of mortality were as follows: cardiomyopathy (40% of all mortalities), stillbirth/abortion, acute myocardial necrosis, chimpanzee‐induced trauma, amyloidosis, and pneumonia. Five morphologic diagnoses accounted for 61% of mortalities: cardiomyopathy, hemorrhage, acute myocardial necrosis, amyloidosis, and pneumonia. The most common etiologies were degenerative, undetermined, bacterial, traumatic, and neoplastic. The cardiovascular system was most frequently involved, followed by the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and multisystemic diseases. Degenerative diseases were the primary etiological cause of mortality of the adult captive chimpanzee population. Chimpanzee‐induced trauma was the major etiological cause of mortality among the perinatal and infant population. This information should be a useful resource for veterinarians and researchers working with chimpanzees. 相似文献

Lagomorph pelage coloration was matched to habitat type, geographical region, altitude and behaviour to explore the adaptive significance of coloration patterns in this little-studied order of mammals. Analyses were conducted with and without taking phylogeny into account. The former analyses were based on a weighted, phylogenetic supertree for all extant species of lagomorphs that we constructed using morphological and molecular data from 146 papers in the literature. Although our analyses represent an initial, somewhat crude investigation, several clear trends are evident. First, overall body coloration across lagomorphs tends to match the background as shown for pale and red coloration and perhaps seasonal pelage change. The case for countershading being a method of concealment is far less strong. Second, ear tips appear to have a communicative role since they are conspicuous in many different habitats. Third, hypotheses for tail tips having a communicative role, for extremities being dark for physiological reasons, and for Gloger's rule received only partial support. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79, 309–328. 相似文献

Preweaning mortality in piglets is a welfare issue, as well as an ethical and economic concern in commercial pig farming. Studying the causes of preweaning mortality and their prevalence is necessary to reduce losses. Preweaning piglet mortality was investigated in a field study including 347 sows from 14 loose-housed Norwegian piglet-producing herds. A total of 5254 piglets were born in these herds during the study period, and 1200 piglets were necropsied. The cause of death was based on pathoanatomical diagnosis (PAD). Preweaning mortality of all piglets in the study was 23.4%, including 6.3% stillborn. The two main causes of preweaning mortality in live-born piglets (n=4924) were trauma (7.1%) and starvation (2.7%). Piglets dying of an infection accounted for 2.0%. Among the necropsied piglets (n=1200), 29.1% had died due to trauma, 26.8% were categorized as stillborn and 11% had died of starvation. Piglets that had died of trauma, had a mean time of death of 1 lactation day (LD 1), ranging from LD 0 to LD 21. The mean time of death of piglets that died due to bacterial infection was LD 9, ranging from LD 0 to LD 31, with Escherichia coli accounting for most infections found in necropsied piglets. Farmers were able to identify death by trauma in piglets, but were less able to identify death due to hunger. Most piglets that died in the preweaning period, died of trauma. Surprisingly, this included large and well-fed piglets. The second most prevalent cause of preweaning mortality was starvation. Improved monitoring may reveal piglets with low body mass index, and additional nutrition may contribute to increase the survival rate. 相似文献

There is growing evidence supporting a role of extracellular alpha‐synuclein in the spreading of Parkinson's disease (PD) pathology. Recent pathological studies have raised the possibility that the enteric nervous system (ENS) is one of the initial sites of alpha‐synuclein pathology in PD. We therefore undertook this survey to determine whether alpha‐synuclein can be secreted by enteric neurons. Alpha‐synuclein secretion was assessed by immunoblot analysis of the culture medium from primary culture of ENS. We show that alpha‐synuclein is physiologically secreted by enteric neurons via a conventional, endoplasmic reticulum/Golgi‐dependent exocytosis, in a neuronal activity‐regulated manner. Our study is the first to evidence that enteric neurons are capable of secreting alpha‐synuclein, thereby providing new insights into the role of the ENS in the pathophysiology of PD. 相似文献

Aims: To evaluate Enterobacter cloacae and Bacillus mojavensis , isolated from rainbow trout gut in the present study, as a probiotic to control yersiniosis disease.
Methods and Results: A strain of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis , isolated from the digestive tract of rainbow trout had an antagonistic effect to Yersinia ruckeri , which causes yersiniosis. After feeding fish with 1 × 108 cells g−1 probiotic containing feed for 60 days, the fish survival rate increased to 99·2% following challenge with Y. ruckeri compared with controls that had 35% survival rate. Effects of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis on weight gains and stimulation of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and hemoglobin were also evaluated in separate groups of fish fed probiotic containing feed for 2 months. Probiotic significantly affected white blood cells, hemoglobin and weight gains of the experimental fish.
Conclusions: Enterobacter cloacae and B. mojavensis , can be used to prevent and control yersiniosis disease.
Significance and Impact of the Study: In conclusion, concomitant use of Ent. cloacae and B. mojavensis as a feed supplement is beneficial to rainbow trout. Use of these organisms can protect fish from yersiniosis and enhance digestibility and utilization of feed. Activities of enzyme markers of subcellular organelles have been measured in brain tissue from subjects with Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Significant increases in the activity of the lysosomal enzyme beta-glucuronidase were observed in both ATD temporal cortex and HD putamen. It is suggested that beta-glucuronidase activity may be a useful biochemical indicator of cellular damage in the CNS. A significant reduction in neutral alpha-glucosidase activity was observed in ATD temporal cortex and HD putamen. This change may reflect an alteration in glycoconjugate processing and may relate to the susceptibility of neurones to the degenerative processes of ATD and HD. 相似文献

Purpose In 2003 the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate introduced performance indicators to monitor and compare quality of care in Dutch hospitals. In 2007, the new performance indicator ‘one-year mortality after a first visit to a cardiology outpatient clinic’ was introduced. We set out to evaluate this new indicator in three Dutch teaching hospitals. Methods Using electronic medical records, information was collected retrospectively of patients aged ≥70 years who visited the cardiology outpatient clinic of Medical Centre Alkmaar, Meander Medical Centre Amersfoort and Deventer Hospital between 1 January 2006 and 31 January 2006. Diagnoses were based on the diagnosis treatment combination (DBC) coding system. Results 547 patients (mean age 78.0 years, 53% men) were included, 35 (6.4%) of whom had died after one year. Cardiovascular disease was the most frequent cause of death (22/35, 62.9%). The oneyear mortality among the three hospitals varied from 5.0 to 7.3% (NS). Conclusion One-year mortality after the first visit to a cardiology outpatient clinic amounted to 6.4% in patients aged ≥70 years and did not differ significantly between the three Dutch teaching hospitals. The administrative load to obtain the necessary information was considerable. One-year mortality should be regarded as an ‘outcome’ parameter rather than a ‘performance’ indicator. Introduction
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a major cause of mortality in connective tissue disease (CTD). We sought to quantify survival and determine factors predictive of mortality in a cohort of patients with CTD-associated PAH (CTD-PAH) in the current era of advanced PAH therapy.Methods
Patients with right heart catheter proven CTD-PAH were recruited from six specialised PAH treatment centres across Australia and followed prospectively. Using survival methods including Cox proportional hazards regression, we modelled for all-cause mortality. Independent variables included demographic, clinical and hemodynamic data.Results
Among 117 patients (104 (94.9%) with systemic sclerosis), during 2.6 ± 1.8 (mean ± SD) years of follow-up from PAH diagnosis, there were 32 (27.4%) deaths. One-, two- and three-year survivals were 94%, 89% and 73%, respectively. In multiple regression analysis, higher mean right atrial pressure (mRAP) at diagnosis (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.04 to 1.24, P = 0.007), lower baseline six-minute walk distance (HR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.43 to 0.97, P = 0.04), higher baseline World Health Organization functional class (HR = 3.42, 95% CI: 1.25 to 9.36, P = 0.04) and presence of a pericardial effusion (HR = 3.39, 95% CI: 1.07 to 10.68, P = 0.04) were predictive of mortality. Warfarin (HR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.78, P = 0.02) and combination PAH therapy (HR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.83, P = 0.03) were protective.Conclusions
In this cohort of CTD-PAH patients, three-year survival was 73%. Independent therapeutic predictors of survival included warfarin and combination PAH therapy. Our findings suggest that anticoagulation and combination PAH therapy may improve survival in CTD-PAH. This observation merits further evaluation in randomised controlled trials. 相似文献14.

Climatic oscillations during the glaciations forced dramatic changes in species distributions, such that some presently temperate regions were alternately occupied by temperate and arctic species. These species could have met and hybridized during climatic transitions. This phenomenon happened for three hare species present in Iberia (Lepus granatensis, Lepus europaeus and Lepus castroviejoi), which display high frequencies of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from Lepus timidus, an arctic/boreal species presently extinct in Iberia. Here, we extend our previous geographical survey to determine whether the distribution of this mtDNA lineage extends beyond the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula, where it is found at high frequencies. We also review the taxonomy, distribution and molecular phylogeny of the genus Lepus. The phylogenetic inference reveals the presence of L. timidus-like mtDNA in several other hare species in Asia and North America, suggesting that the mitochondrial introgression observed in Iberia might be generalized. Comparison with the available nuclear gene phylogenies suggests that introgression could have happened repeatedly, possibly during different climatic transitions. We discuss demographic and adaptive scenarios that could account for the repetition in time and space of this spectacular phenomenon and suggest ways to improve our understanding of its determinants and consequences. Such high levels of introgressive hybridization should discourage attempts to revise hare taxonomy based solely on mtDNA. 相似文献

A unique type of microorganism has been found causing an unusual disease in larvae of the clover cutworm, Scotogramma trifolii (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae). The organism contains DNA and reproduces exclusively by self-assembly forming enveloped reniform/bacilliform particles which measure 170 × 450 nm in negatively stained preparations. During initial stages of development, the organism apparently reproduces primarily within vesicles in the cytoplasm of a variety of cell types including hemocytes, and epidermal, fat body, and tracheal matrix cells. Most reproduction, however, occurs in vesicles that circulate in the hemolymph. These vesicles, most of which are derived from host cells, measure 2–10 μm in diameter, are highly refractile, reach populations as high as 108/ml of hemolymph, and are diagnostic for the disease. The pathology caused by this organism, its shape and ultrastructure, and reproduction within vesicles indicate it is either a peculiar type of rickettsia, possibly related to those of the genus Rickettsiella, or a new type of invertebrate virus. Among its unusual features are its ability to induce the formation of reproductive vesicles from host cell components, and its apparent control of de novo ribosome and membrane synthesis within these vesicles as it develops. The possible relationship of this organism to baculoviruses and rickettsia is discussed. 相似文献

The management of hunted species is challenging, as it must conciliate the conservation of species and their sustainable exploitation. Nongenetic tools are widely used in this context but they may present limitations notably when species can hybridize or when large‐scale spatial monitoring is required to establish optimal management actions. This is why genetic tools have been more and more integrated in wildlife management practices. However, the markers proposed are often amplified in small multiplexes when larger ones could allow to better cope with the small quantities of DNA obtained with noninvasive sampling methods. Here, we propose a unique multiplex of 12 autosomal microsatellite markers for the study of two hare species that exist in sympatry in some areas in Europe and are hunted notably in France: the brown hare Lepus europaeus and the mountain hare L. timidus. We tested 17 markers previously used in these two species or other lagomorph species, from which 12 were included in this single multiplex. Diversity was between 4 and 30 alleles per locus totaling 126 alleles, and we showed that these markers possess appropriate genetic resolution for individual and species identification for the populations under study. This multiplex panel represents the largest number of microsatellites amplified in one reaction proposed for these two hare species and provides a cost‐effective and valuable tool for further hybridization studies and the management of hares. 相似文献

Human life history is distinguished by long lifespan, delayed reproduction, intergenerational asymmetric benefit transfers from adults to juveniles and between adults, and a large brain able to engage in unprecedented levels of learning, reasoning, and insight. The evolution of these traits depends on relatively low human mortality. Understanding why humans have low mortality is therefore critical for understanding the evolution of key human traits. One explanation is that the evolution of food provisioning during periods of health crisis reduced mortality. This hypothesis turns on health risk having posed a significant adaptive problem that could be effectively buffered by healthcare provisioning. Unfortunately, the frequency, duration, and fitness effects of temporary disability are difficult to estimate based on osteological evidence alone, and systematic ethno-biological research on these issues among extant small-scale societies with little access to Western medical care is lacking. Here I present data on 678 injuries and illnesses suffered by 40 Shiwiar forager-horticulturalists, based on physical evidence and informant reports. A subsample of 17 individuals provided data on incidence and duration of disability for 215 pathological incidents. Results indicate that injury and illness occur frequently across the lifespan. Most living individuals have suffered temporarily disabling health crises likely to have been lethal without provisioning. The fitness effects of surviving these episodes are high, suggesting that the Shiwiar population structure and lifeway are dependent on infrequent extended provisioning to temporarily disabled individuals, and that provisioning of aid during healthcare crises effectively lowers mortality in this small-scale society. 相似文献

Objective: We investigated the association among increased levels of plasma homocysteine (Hcy), all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular events. Methods: Hcy was measured in 670 middle-aged and elderly subjects with no previous manifest cardiovascular disease. The follow-up period was 15 years. Results: Subjects with Hcy?≥?10.8?μmol/l (n?=?231) had a significant higher incidence of all-cause mortality (p?<?0.001) and CV events (p?<?0.001) compared with subjects with Hcy?<?10.8?μmol/l (n?=?439). However, there was no association on high levels of Hcy and VTE events or stroke. Conclusion: Increased levels of Hcy are associated with all-cause mortality and CV events. 相似文献
