A multi-trait selection index designed to improve the overall economic performance of hill sheep, including both maternal and lamb traits, has been developed and tested in a selection experiment over 7 years. Two versions of the index were tested, with different economic weights applied to the traits, on two different hill farms: one version including maternal and growth traits; the other version with additional breeding goals of carcass weight, fatness and conformation scores. Responses to selection, using both versions of the index, suggest that improvements are being made in overall index score and lamb growth. This study investigated the indirect effects of these selection indices on lamb carcass composition and muscularity traits, as measured using X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning. A total of 499 lambs from the two hill farms were CT scanned at weaning (approximately 120 days of age). Approximately half of the lambs from each farm were from the selection line (S, animals with highest index scores selected for breeding), while the other half were from a control line (C, animals with average index scores selected). Composition and muscularity traits were estimated on each lamb from CT data and differences between genetic lines investigated, within farm, using restricted maximum likelihood analyses, adjusting for either live weight or age. Results showed that the selection index without carcass traits produced lambs with carcass composition that was not significantly different to control lambs at a given live weight or age. Including carcass traits in the index resulted in lambs with no compositional differences (except for a slight increase in bone) at a set age compared with controls. At a given live weight however, selection lambs had less fat and lower carcass weights and killing-out percentage. Muscularity (3-D muscle shape) and muscle area shape (2-D) were not improved as a result of selection on either version of the index (including carcass weight and grades in the breeding goals or not) and, at a fixed live weight, muscularity in hind leg and lumbar regions tended to be higher in the C line. To accelerate changes in carcass composition and muscularity within the context of a multi-trait selection index for hill sheep, consideration should therefore be given to including objective CT-derived carcass traits in the index in addition to the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC) carcass grades or ultrasound measurements.  相似文献

Feeding costs represent one of the highest expenditures in animal production systems. Breeding efficient animals that express their growth potential while eating less is therefore a major objective for breeders. We estimated the genetic parameters for feed intake, feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR)), growth and body composition traits in the Romane meat sheep breed. In these traits, selection responses to single-generation divergent selection on RFI were evaluated. From 2009 to 2016, a total of 951 male lambs were tested for 8 weeks starting from 3 months of age. They were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the testing period. Backfat thickness and muscle depth were recorded at the end of the testing period through ultrasound measurements. Feed intake was continuously recorded over the testing period using the automatic concentrate feeders. The heritability of RFI was estimated at 0.45 ± 0.08, which was higher than the heritability of FCR (0.30 ± 0.08). No significant genetic correlations were observed between RFI and growth traits. A favourable low negative genetic correlation was estimated between RFI and muscle depth (−0.30 ± 0.15), though additional data are needed to confirm these results. The selection of low RFI sires based on their breeding values led to the production of lambs eating significantly less concentrate (3% decrease in the average daily feed intake), but with the same growth as lambs from sires selected based on high RFI breeding values. We concluded that in meat sheep, RFI is a heritable trait that is genetically independent of post-weaning growth and body composition traits. A one-generation divergent selection based on RFI breeding values highlighted that substantial gains in feeding costs can be expected in selection schemes for meat sheep breeds.  相似文献

Small ruminant breeding programmes in low-input production systems are best organised at the community level. Participant farmers have to agree on goal traits and their relative importance. When BLUP breeding values of goal traits are not available in time, appropriate selection indexes can be used to aid visual selection. Taking Ethiopian Abergelle goat and Bonga sheep community-based breeding programmes (CBBPs) as an example, breeding objective functions were defined and selection indexes were constructed and evaluated. Breeding goals for Abergelle goats included early sale weight, survival and milk production. Breeding goals for Bonga included the number of offspring born, sale weight and survival. Economic weights of objective traits can be used in several ways depending on measured traits and the reliability of their genetic parameters. Selection indexes included combinations of objective traits measured on candidates and their dams and situations when Abergelle communities prefer to restrict genetic changes in number of offspring born or adult weight and when Bonga communities prefer to restrict changes in adult weight. Genetic and economic gains were evaluated as well as sensitivity to feed cost assumptions and to repeated dam records. After independent culling on preponderant traits such as coat colour and horn/tail type, sires in Abergelle goat community breeding programmes should be selected on indexes including at least own early live weight and their dams average milk production records. Sires for Bonga sheep programmes should be selected on own early live weight and desirably also on their dam’s number of offspring born. Sensitivity to feed cost assumptions was negligible but repeated measurements of dam records improved index accuracies considerably. Restricting genetic changes in number of offspring born or adult weight is not recommended.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated between current UK hill sheep breeding goals and lamb carcass composition and muscularity traits derived using X-ray computed tomography (CT). To produce these estimates, a total of 648 lambs from two hill farms were CT scanned at weaning (ca 120 days of age), over 3 years, and total weights of carcass muscle (MUSC), fat (CFAT) and bone (BONE) and internal fat (IFAT) were predicted. Previously derived muscularity indices were also calculated for the hind leg (HLMI) and lumbar (LRMI) regions, to assess muscle shape. Data for current breeding goals (lamb performance and maternal traits) were also included from a total of 10 297 lamb records and 12 704 ewe records. Heritabilities were estimated for each trait and genetic and phenotypic correlations were calculated between each CT trait and other lamb or ewe traits. Moderate to high positive genetic correlations were found between CT-predicted tissue weights and breeding goals, which were also weights (lamb weaning weight, carcass weight, mature ewe weight, average weight of lambs reared by the ewe). CFAT was positively genetically correlated with ultrasound backfat depth at weaning (UFD) and subjective fatness grade at slaughter (MLCF), suggesting that carcass fat could be decreased using selection on any of these predictors. Ultrasound muscle depth at weaning (UMD) and subjective conformation score at slaughter (MLCC) had high genetic correlations with the muscularity indices (HLMI and LRMI), but correlations with MUSC were not significantly different from zero. This implies that selection to improve MLCC is likely to be increasing the 'roundness' of muscle shape in the high-priced carcass region, but having little impact on total lean meat yield. Correlations of CT traits with the other ewe traits (number of lambs weaned, number of lambs lost, longevity, fleece weight) were generally small or not significantly different from zero. The genetic parameters generated in this study can now be used in selection index calculations to assess the benefits of including lamb CT traits in future selection programmes for hill sheep.  相似文献

Booroola Merino (BoM) ewes have a high ovulation rate and litter size which in 1980 was postulated to be due to the effects of a major gene (FecB). This was confirmed in breeding experiments and FecB was subsequently shown to be due to a mutation (BMPR-1B) on chromosome 6. The BoM originated from an Australian commercial fine wool Merino flock (Booroola) and has been used in crossing experiments and for introgression of FecB into many breeds around the world to improve fecundity. The mutation has recently been found in native sheep breeds in India, China and Indonesia and it is likely that FecB in the Australian BoM was derived from importations of Garole sheep from India in 1792 and 1793.The effects on production traits of the FecB mutation in a range of genetic comparisons, environments and production systems are reviewed. Comparisons involving BoM crosses with various other breeds and contrasts of FecB homozygous (BB), heterozygous (B+) and non-carrier (++) genotypes in comparable background genotypes, including non-BoM, have been summarised from 45 reports. The weighted mean effect for ewes carrying one copy of FecB (B+) was +1.3 (range +0.8 to +2.0) for ovulation rate and +0.7 (range +0.4 to +1.3) for litter size. The effect of a second copy (BB) was generally additive for ovulation rate, with little or no increase in litter size for BB ewes among BoM crosses. However there was generally a further increase in litter size for BB ewes of about half the effect of one copy (B+) in the Indian and Chinese breeds. Poor lamb survival and lamb growth reduced the number of lambs weaned and total weight of lamb weaned by B+ ewes. Most studies still showed a small advantage for B+ ewes, although several reported negative effects. While embryo survival declines at higher ovulation rates, the effects of FecB per se are equivocal. There is some evidence of a higher non-pregnancy rate among homozygous BB ewes. Most studies reported lower birth weight and growth rate from BoM cross lambs and lambs from crossbred ewes introgressed with FecB. However it is difficult to separate the effects of low background genetic merit for growth of the BoM and the lower birth weight and growth rate of lambs from larger litters from the genetic effect of carrying FecB. There was little or no difference in growth rate between BB, B+ and ++ genotype lambs. For other traits including, seasonal oestrous activity, carcass and meat quality and wool production, there was no evidence of major effects of FecB. The opportunities for management and nutritional modification of FecB expression and implications for industry adoption are briefly discussed.  相似文献

A deterministic bio-economic model was used to estimate the economic values of different traits in Arabic sheep native to the Khuzestan province of Iran. In the studied system, variable costs accounted for about 98.5% of the total costs and among variable costs, feed costs had the highest proportion with 70.7%. Revenue sources included meat, wool, and manure, where meat was the most important one and formed 95.5% of total revenues. Economic value for a trait was estimated as the amount of change in the profit of system as its mean increased by one unit, while the means of other traits were constant. The most important trait in this system was litter size, followed by ewe survival, dressing percentage, and wool weight, respectively. Birth weight had a negative economic value but weight at older ages especially weaning weight and 12-month weight had positive economic values. The sensitivity of economic values of traits was investigated by changing feed and non-feed costs, meat and wool prices by ±10%. Results showed that economic values for dressing percentage and wool weight are not sensitive to change in costs. In addition, changes in marketing and management costs had no effect on the economic value for traits related to body weight in different ages. In general, the economic value for traits which showed sensitivity to the changes of costs, except ewe survival, decreased due to an increase in costs. The economic value for all traits, except birth and wool weight, changed because of a change in meat price. Increasing meat price meant a higher economic importance. Sheep meat producers derive the majority of income from sales of weaned lambs, determined by flock conception rates, litter size, and lamb survival. Field data from commercial flocks can inform sensitivity analyses of the effect of litter size on flock productivity, feed demand, and gross margin. This study adapted an established bio-economic model of a flock of breeding ewes informed by statistical relationships (from linear models) between flock litter size (lambs born per ewe lambing) and production factors (such as flock barren rate, litter birth type and lamb birth weight) identified using 156 145 animal records from the Irish national sheep breeding database. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken to investigate the effects of flock litter size on flock production, feed demand, and gross margin. Results showed that as flock litter size increased, the proportion of lambs born as multiples increased, with 14 % of lambs born as singles when flock litter size was 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing. Flock gross margin increased from €2 205 to €7 730 as litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.0 lambs born per ewe lambing. As litter size increased from 1.0 to 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased linearly by, on average, €52 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of > 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock gross margin increased on average €12 per 0.01 increase in litter size. At a litter size of 2.2 lambs born per ewe lambing, flock efficiency (at 65.0 kg of lamb weaned per ewe presented for breeding), weaning rate (at 1.5 lambs weaned per ewe presented for breeding; not including excess lambs from large litters sold within a week after birth and thus not weaned on-farm), and gross margin (at €8 500) began to plateau. The results indicate lower marginal returns in gross margin at very high flock litter size, due to the lower value of additional lambs born as triplets and quadruplets compared with single- and twin-born lambs. However, the diminishing economic returns occurred at higher flock litter size than are currently biologically achieved in most flocks. Quantification from this analysis demonstrates how the value of increasing the number of lambs born changes at very high flock litter size, which can inform the priorities and performance benchmarking for international sheep meat production industries.  相似文献

Rambouillet sheep were selected for high or low reproductive rate based on an index of reproductive rate, reproductive INDEX = dam's total lifetime lambs born/(age in years-1). Selected ewes were first born in 1969. A random bred control line was established from the remaining foundation ewes with the first ewes born in 1973. Genetic variances were estimated with REML procedures for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing. Heritability of reproductive index was 0.26. Heritability for number of lambs born were 0.11 and 0.12 and for number of lambs weaned were 0.04 and 0.04 per ewe exposed for breeding and per ewe lambing, respectively. Breeding values for the reproductive index were estimated using the full animal model (BLUP) with the complete numerator relationship matrix on reproductive index, with fixed effect of year of birth of ewe and breeding values for number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing, estimated with the fixed effects of year of birth of ewe and age of ewe and the random effect of permanent environmental effect among repeated lambing records. Genetic change was estimated as the regression of breeding value for reproductive index and number of lambs born or weaned either per ewe exposed for breeding or per ewe lambing on year of birth of the ewe. High and low lines both responded to selection for reproductive index as compared to the control line (P<0.01). The high line increased at a rate of b = 0.0134 ± 0.0006 reproductive index units and the low line decreased at a rate of b = − 0.0098 ± 0.0005 reproductive index units per year. Response to selection for reproductive index resulted in b = − 0.0074 ± 0.0007 and b = 0.0163 ± 0.0006 lambs per ewe exposed for breeding, and b = − 0.0041 ± 0.0002 and b = 0.0075 ± 0.0002 lambs weaned per ewe exposed for breeding in the low and high lines, respectively. There was a greater response to selection in the high line compared to the low line. These results indicated that the reproductive index did respond to selection.  相似文献

Hydrothermal factors in Ningxia, an arid and semi-arid area in Northwestern China, were examined to determine their influence on the geographical differentiation of the wool quality of Tan sheep lambskin. Prospective areas for extension of the Tan sheep industry were also investigated. Two sheep groups were sampled; one consisted of artificial insemination flocks (1241 lambs sampled from 25 flocks) and the other of natural mating flocks (1009 lambs from 38 flocks). Six phenotypical traits were measured for each lamb and six hydrothermal factors were collected from the meteorological stations located in the sampling areas. A significant correlation was found between wool characteristics of the lambskin and hydrothermal conditions. Data further indicated that among all the hydrothermal factors measured, those causing the geographical differentiation of soil and vegetation were the major factors responsible for the corresponding differentiation of the lambskin and wool quality of Tan sheep. Thermal factors were mostly positively correlated with wool quality, while the influence of moisture was negative. Three eco-geographical regions were defined based on a combination of the hydrothermal conditions and corresponding wool characters: (i) typical region or super-suitable region, (ii) sub-typical region or suitable region and (iii) transitional region. The delimitation could be used as a basis for the extension of the Tan sheep industry. It is also suggested that the wool quality of lambskin of Tan sheep in these three regions could be improved by means of controlled breeding and selection.  相似文献

Genetic correlations were estimated between first cross ewe reproduction traits and growth and carcass traits of their second cross lamb progeny. The 2460 crossbred ewes were progeny of 74 maternal breed sires and mainly Merino dams. The ewes had 3 joinings to terminal sire rams with 6824 joining records resulting in 9002 lambs born and 7176 lambs slaughtered. The ewe reproduction traits included: fertility, litter size, ewe rearing ability or lamb survival, number of lambs born (NLBj) and weaned (NLWj) per ewe joined, with traits reflecting ewe productivity being total litter weight weaned (TWWj) per ewe joined and the component trait average lamb weaning weight in the litter (AWW). The lamb growth traits included weight of the lambs at birth (BWT), weaning (WWT) and post weaning (PWWT) as well as growth rate pre and post weaning. The lamb carcass traits included hot carcass weight (HCWT), dressing yield (DRESS%), fat depth (FatGR, FatC), eye muscle depth (EMD) and area (EMA) and meat quality traits (colour and pH). The genetic correlations were estimated by bivariate mixed models using ASReml. The genetic correlations between the composite reproduction traits of the ewes and the post-weaning growth rate of their lambs were high (0.67 for NLBj and 0.65 for NLWj). There were moderate positive correlations between NLWj and WWT (0.36), PWWT (0.49) and pre weaning growth (0.36) and NLBj with PWWT (0.31). BWT was negatively correlated with litter size (−0.34) and positively with ewe rearing ability (0.38). Most of the other genetic correlations were smaller than their standard errors which generally ranged from 0.2 to 0.3. The genetic correlations for HCWT with all the ewe reproduction traits were positive and moderate (0.29–0.53) and high with the ewe productivity traits that included weight of lambs (TWWj 0.98 and AWW 0.96). The genetic correlations among the other traits were variable and had high standard errors, generally ranging from 0.1 to 0.5. However there were generally negative and unfavourable genetic correlations between the reproduction traits and DRESS% and meat colour L*, whereas those with carcass fat (FatC and FatGR) were generally negative and favourable.  相似文献

Economically important reproduction traits in sheep, such as number of lambs weaned and litter size, are expressed only in females and later in life after most selection decisions are made, which makes them ideal candidates for genomic selection. Accurate genomic predictions would lead to greater genetic gain for these traits by enabling accurate selection of young rams with high genetic merit. The aim of this study was to design and evaluate the accuracy of a genomic prediction method for female reproduction in sheep using daughter trait deviations (DTD) for sires and ewe phenotypes (when individual ewes were genotyped) for three reproduction traits: number of lambs born (NLB), litter size (LSIZE) and number of lambs weaned. Genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP), BayesR and pedigree BLUP analyses of the three reproduction traits measured on 5340 sheep (4503 ewes and 837 sires) with real and imputed genotypes for 510 174 SNPs were performed. The prediction of breeding values using both sire and ewe trait records was validated in Merino sheep. Prediction accuracy was evaluated by across sire family and random cross‐validations. Accuracies of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) were assessed as the mean Pearson correlation adjusted by the accuracy of the input phenotypes. The addition of sire DTD into the prediction analysis resulted in higher accuracies compared with using only ewe records in genomic predictions or pedigree BLUP. Using GBLUP, the average accuracy based on the combined records (ewes and sire DTD) was 0.43 across traits, but the accuracies varied by trait and type of cross‐validations. The accuracies of GEBVs from random cross‐validations (range 0.17–0.61) were higher than were those from sire family cross‐validations (range 0.00–0.51). The GEBV accuracies of 0.41–0.54 for NLB and LSIZE based on the combined records were amongst the highest in the study. Although BayesR was not significantly different from GBLUP in prediction accuracy, it identified several candidate genes which are known to be associated with NLB and LSIZE. The approach provides a way to make use of all data available in genomic prediction for traits that have limited recording.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of growing Florina (Pelagonia) lambs fed a high concentrate diet, as well as the effect of slaughter weight on carcass characteristics. The assessment of the growth used 12 male and 12 female individually penned weaned lambs until they reached 60% of their mature body weight (BW), while assessment of the effect of slaughter weight at weaning (42 days of age), and at 30%, 45% and 60% of the mature BW, on carcass characteristics used 40 male and 40 female weaned lambs. In experiment 1, results showed that Florina lambs have good growth. Male lambs grew faster (P < 0.001) than female lambs, resulting in a lower (P < 0.001) feed conversion ratio (FCR) for males. Rate of gain, feed consumption and FCR increased (P < 0.001) as the experiment progressed. In experiment 2, results showed that degree of maturity affected (P < 0.001) fasted body weight and carcass weight, as well as all carcass characteristics and commercial cuts, except the steaks cut which did not differ. Florina lambs can be slaughtered in heavier carcass weights, heavier than the 15 kg as the present practice. The heavier carcasses can appeal to wider range of consumers due to the excellent muscle development and the reduced visible fat cover. Florina sheep raised for heavy carcass meat production may be more economically beneficial for the breeders and the increased meat produced locally can help reduce need for importing meat from abroad.  相似文献

A 131-day rotational grazing experiment was conducted in the summer autumn of 2007/2008 to compare effects of feeding condensed tannin (CT)-containing willow (Salix spp.) fodder blocks (i.e., silvopastoral system) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)/white clover (Trifolium repens) control pasture upon the immune response to gastrointestinal nematode parasite infection in Romney weaned lambs. Groups of lambs (n = 40) were allocated to either willow fodder blocks or control pasture; half of each group (n = 20) were regularly-drenched with anthelmintic at approximately 21 day intervals, whilst the remaining 20 weaned lambs were not drenched unless pre-determined faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) were reached, when all weaned lambs in that group were drenched with anthelmintic (i.e., trigger-drenching). Metabolizable energy and CT concentrations were higher in willow fodder versus pasture herbages. Weaned lambs grazing willow fodder blocks had lower live weight gain (92 g/day) and carcass weight (14.4 kg) than those grazing control pasture (134 g; 15.3 kg), with no effect of anthelmintic drenching. Regular anthelmintic treatment maintained similar and low FEC up to day 82, which then increased, whilst trigger-drenched lambs grazing willow fodder blocks had higher FEC than lambs grazing control pasture on three out of eight occasions. As judged by faecal larval cultures, grazing willow fodder blocks reduced the relative proportions of abomasal-dwelling parasites (Haemonchus contortus and Teladorsagia spp.). Trigger-drenched willow fodder block-fed sheep had higher platelet, eosinophil, total white blood cell and lymphocyte counts, greater CD21+ and greater γδ (Gamma Delta) TCR+ (T cell receptor) lymphocyte subsets than control pasture-fed sheep, and higher plasma levels of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) specific for carbohydrate larval antigen (CarLa) on day 105 (P<0.001). None of these parameters were affected by grazing treatment in regularly-drenched lambs. Higher immunological measurements in trigger-drenched lambs grazing willow fodder blocks could be due to higher larval intake and/or to the effects of secondary compounds in willow fodder blocks priming the immune system. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Longevity is the amount of time breeding females stay active in a herd by avoiding death or culling because of illness or reproductive failure. This is a trait of economic relevance in commercial small ruminant breeding herds as it affects lifetime reproductive output. The purpose of this study was to determine if breed of meat goat influences breeding doe survival rates and cumulative reproductive performance under semi-intensive management. RESULTS: Boer (n[THIN SPACE]=[THIN SPACE]132), Kiko (n[THIN SPACE]=[THIN SPACE]92) and Spanish (n[THIN SPACE]=[THIN SPACE]79) does were evaluated for longevity trends and cumulative kid production. The herd was managed on humid subtropical pasture. Does had the chance to complete 2 to 6 production years. Survival curves were analyzed for 2 culling methods. The actual culling practice removed does after two failures to wean a kid. An alternative culling protocol removed doe records after the first failure to wean a kid. Kid production traits analyzed across herd life were the total number of kids weaned and cumulative kid weight weaned to the 2-, 3-, and 5-year stayability endpoints. Most (82 %) doe exits were illness-related under the actual culling method. Reproductive failure represented 51 % of doe exits under the alternative culling protocol. Boer does had greater survival declines (P[THIN SPACE]<[THIN SPACE]0.01) from 2 to 6 years of herd life compared to Kiko and Spanish under both culling protocols. Boer does had lower stayability rates (P[THIN SPACE]<[THIN SPACE]0.01) at each year endpoint for both culling protocols. Under the alternative protocol, over 50 % of Boer does failed to complete 2 years, whereas over 50 % of Kiko and Spanish does successfully completed 4 years. Boer does had lower (P[THIN SPACE]<[THIN SPACE]0.01) total number of kids weaned and cumulative weight weaned through each stayability endpoint compared to Kiko and Spanish. CONCLUSION: Boer does had low stayability and cumulative kid production rates compared to Kiko and Spanish does. Poor health was the primary driver of does exiting the herd. Kiko and Spanish does did not differ for longevity and lifetime performance indicators.  相似文献

We studied the relationships among growth, body composition and reproductive performance in ewe lambs with known phenotypic values for depth of eye muscle (EMD) and fat (FAT) and Australian Sheep Breeding Values for post-weaning live weight (PWT) and depth of eye muscle (PEMD) and fat (PFAT). To detect estrus, vasectomized rams were placed with 190 Merino ewe lambs when on average they were 157 days old. The vasectomized rams were replaced with entire rams when the ewe lambs were, on average, 226 days old. Lambs were weighed every week and blood was sampled on four occasions for assay of ghrelin, leptin and ß-hydroxybutyrate. Almost 90% of the lambs attained puberty during the experiment, at an average live weight of 41.4 kg and average age of 197 days. Ewe lambs with higher values for EMD (P < 0.001), FAT (P < 0.01), PWT (P < 0.001), PEMD (P < 0.05) and PFAT (P < 0.05) were more likely to achieve puberty by 251 days of age. Thirty-six percent of the lambs conceived and, at the estimated date of conception, the average live weight was 46.9 ± 0.6 kg and average age was 273 days. Fertility, fecundity and reproductive rate were positively related to PWT (P < 0.05) and thus live weight at the start of mating (P < 0.001). Reproductive performance was not correlated with blood concentrations of ghrelin, leptin or ß-hydroxybutyrate. Many ewe lambs attained puberty, as detected by vasectomized rams, but then failed to become pregnant after mating with entire rams. Nevertheless, we can conclude that in ewe lambs mated at 8 months of age, higher breeding values for growth, muscle and fat are positively correlated with reproductive performance, although the effects of breeding values and responses to live weight are highly variable.  相似文献

Body weights, fecal egg counts (FEC), and packed cell volumes (PCV) of hair sheep and wool sheep crossbred lambs were compared over 8 weeks following administration of a single dose of approximately 10,000 third-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Hair sheep lambs (n=17) were reciprocal crosses between mainland USA populations of Barbados Blackbelly (BB) and Virgin Islands White (VIW) sheep. Wool sheep lambs (n=64) were from a crossbred composite of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finnish Landrace breeding. Lambs of both breed types continued to grow during the period of infection. Mean weights were higher for wool lambs (39.7±0.8 kg) than for hair lambs (28.2±1.5 kg). FEC increased to week 5 in both breed groups and remained elevated in wool lambs through week 7 but declined sharply in hair lambs after week 5. Mean FEC for weeks 4 through 8 were 4011±361 eggs per gram of feces (epg) in wool lambs, and 1135±196 epg in hair lambs. PCV declined through week 7 in wool lambs but stabilized and then increased after week 4 in hair lambs. Mean PCV in weeks 4 through 8 were 22.4±0.3% in wool lambs and 24.3±0.5% in hair lambs. These results suggest that Caribbean hair breeds may be able to contribute significantly to development of parasite-resistant sheep populations.  相似文献

The developments in Norwegian sheep breeding since the early 1990s are reviewed. For the largest breeding population, the Norwegian White Sheep, results are presented for both genetic and phenotypic changes. Of the nine traits that make up the aggregate genotype, the largest gain per year, in per cent of the corresponding phenotypic average, was found for carcass grade (1.66%) and carcass weight (0.99%), number of lambs born at 1, 2 and 3 years of age (0.32% to 0.60%) and the maternal effect on weaning weight (0.26%). For fat grade, a genetic deterioration was estimated. This may be due to the too small weighting of this trait in the aggregate genotype and the true genetic parameters being somewhat different from the estimates in the prediction of breeding values. For lamb as well as ewe fleece weight, genetic change was close to zero - interpreted as mainly a correlated response to other traits in the aggregate genotype. Data for the two traits of fleece weight were, respectively, selected and few. Thus, phenotypic change was calculated for all traits except for fleece weight, and in addition for number of lambs at weaning, being indirectly selected for through number of lambs born. For all traits, with the exception of fat grade, advantageous phenotypic change was estimated. For weaning and carcass weight, the phenotypic change was less than the genetic change, while the opposite was observed for carcass and fat grade and number of lambs born. The latter traits can be more easily controlled by environmental actions, and the results thus exemplify the interdependency between environmental and genetic change.  相似文献

Breeding for resistance against nematodes has become the need of the hour due to emergence of anthelmintic resistant strains of major pathogenic nematodes of economic importance and rising demand for chemical residue free food by consumers. ICAR-Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute Avikanagar (Rajasthan) has developed Haemonchus contortus resistant lines of sheep in Avikalin and Malpura breeds by harvesting benefits of over-dispersion in fecal egg counts (FEC) through executing a breeding program since year 2004. Aim of the present study was to assess the genetic parameters for nematode resistance in these lines and also to develop suitable criteria for selection targeting resistance as well as growth improvement in these two lines. The data on 1240 Avikalin and 2172 Malpura sheep generated over 13 years (2004–16) for FEC along with deep pedigree and growth records for live weight at 6 (6WT) and 12 month were used for study. Data were analyzed using Average Information Restricted Maximum Likelihood (AIREML) approach. Results revealed moderate heritability (h2) for pre-drench log transformed fecal egg count (LFEC) in Avikalin (0.21±0.06) and Malpura (0.18±0.04) sheep. The post-drench h2 for LFEC was low in Avikalin (0.04±0.03) and Malpura (0.11±0.03) sheep. Effective selection program can be carried out for further improving the resistance against H. contortus in both the breeds using pre-drench LFEC estimates. The genetic correlation between the pre-drench LFEC and growth traits was not in the desired direction. Existence of substantial genotype × environment (G×E) interaction was seen in Malpura sheep, where major shift in ranks of sheep based on pre-drench LFEC as that of post-drench LFEC was observed owing to genetic correlation of 0.65±0.15. The G×E was absent in Avikalin sheep. Unreliable genetic correlation between growth and LFEC does not warrant a multi trait selection index development and its utilization in breeding program. The independent selection for LFEC followed by corrected 6WT can precisely help in achieving the goal of improving growth in nematode resistant sheep.  相似文献
