The pregnancy rate and the subsequent litter size were studied in 332 Swedish Yorkshire primiparous sows, fed according to a commercial Swedish feeding regime during lactation. The sows were weighed and backfat depth was recorded at the first farrowing, at weaning, and at mating. Oestrous detection was performed once daily after weaning, and the interval from weaning to first oestrus (IWO) was recorded. Blood samples for determination of plasma progesterone were drawn regularly after the first weaning. Statistical analyses were only performed on sows with an IWO of 3-8 days. Of these 206 sows were mated on their first (OE1 sows) and 87 sows on their second (87 OE2 sows) oestrus after weaning. The pregnancy rate was 85.4% for OE1 sows and 75.9% for OE2 sows (p=0.048). There was no significant difference in pregnancy rate between OE1 sows with an IWO of 3-5 days and OE1 sows with an interval of 6-8 days. OE2 sows with an IWO of 6-8 days, on the other hand, had a significantly lower pregnancy rate compared with OE2 sows with an interval of 3-5 days. The pregnancy rate in sows that lost more than 30 kg during the first lactation period did not differ from that of sows losing less than 30 kg. In sows with a first litter size of more than 9 piglets alive at birth, the pregnancy rate decreases significantly if mating is delayed until the second oestrus after weaning. OE2 sows had a significantly larger second litter size at birth than OE1 sows (+ 2.0). The litter size at six weeks did not, on the other hand, differ significantly (+ 0.4). There was a positive correlation between the IWO and 2nd litter size, although significant only for OE1 sows between the IWO and litter size alive at birth. In the OE1 group, sows losing 20 kg or less during lactation had significantly larger second litters at birth than the sows losing 21-30 kg, but not significantly larger than the sows losing more than 30 kg. One piglet more, at birth, in the first litter resulted in 0.25 piglet more in the second litter. For sows with a large first litter there was a low probability of also having a large second litter.  相似文献

The effect of weaning the 4–5 heaviest piglets in the litter on day 33 of lactation and the remainder 2 days later (fractionated weaning) on plasma levels of prolactin, Cortisol, oestradiol-17β (E2), progesterone (P4) and LH, as well as on the weaning to oestrus interval in primiparous sows was studied. Twelve crossbred sows were grouped into 6 pairs according to farrowing date and litter size. The litter of 1 sow in each pair (F) was weaned in 2 stages, and the other conventionally weaned at 35 days (C). Blood samples were collected via a permanent jugular vein catheter every 3 h from 9 am to 9 pm daily throughout the experimental period, and intensively at 15 min intervals for 12 h on the day of first and final weaning and for 6 h on the day after each weaning. All sows were slaughtered following their first post-weaning oestrus and the reproductive organs were macroscopically examined. Lactational oestrus was not observed in any of the sows. Sows from 5 out of 6 pairs showed oestrus within 8 days of weaning and post-mortem examination showed normal ovulation. There was a tendency for the F sows to have a shorter weaning to oestrus interval, as compared with the C sows (5 of 6 pairs, 4.8 days v 5.6 days). The plasma levels of prolactin around weaning were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Within 6 h after final weaning, the prolactin concentrations decreased gradually from 7.6 and 8.7 to 1.6 and 1.7 µg/l in the control and treatment groups, respectively. The plasma levels of Cortisol, showing a diurnal rhythm (with the lowest level at 6 and/or 9 p m), did on no occasion differ between the 2 groups. On the day of final weaning, no diurnal rhythm was observed, with Cortisol remaining high at 6 and 9 pm. The plasma levels of E2 and P4 were low until final weaning in both groups. After final weaning the E2 levels rose faster in the F sows than in the C sows, to 44.3 and 34.8 pmol/l, respectively, on day 2 (p < 0.01). No significant differences in levels of plasma LH and the number of LH pulses were observed between the groups. After final weaning the average and base levels of LH and the number of LH pulse(s) increased significantly.  相似文献

Eighteen sows (6 primiparous and 12 multiparous) were allotted randomly within parity to two lactational treatments: litter separation (LS; 6 h/day) plus boar exposure (BE; 1 h/day; N = 14) beginning 8 days before weaning (4 weeks) and no LS + no BE (controls; N = 4). Blood was collected from all sows via indwelling venous catheters at 20-min intervals for 5 h on Days -1, 0, 1, 2 and 3 from start of treatment. Control sows and those exposed to LS + BE not exhibiting oestrus during lactation were resampled on Days -1, 0, 1 and 2 from weaning. All 10 multiparous sows receiving LS + BE exhibited oestrus during lactation, whereas none of the 4 primiparous sows exposed to LS + BE or the 2 control multiparous and 2 control primiparous sows exhibited lactational oestrus. Overall concentrations of LH in serum were higher (P less than 0.05) in sows receiving LS + BE than in control sows during lactation, whereas overall FSH was higher (P less than 0.05) in primiparous than multiparous sows. Number and amplitude of pulses of LH were greater (P less than 0.05) for treated primiparous than multiparous sows during lactation. Oestradiol-17 beta increased (P less than 0.05) in sows during LS + BE and was higher (P less than 0.01) in multiparous sows of this group than control multiparous or treated primiparous sows. Preweaning concentrations of cortisol and progesterone in serum were higher (P less than 0.05) in treated than control sows for multiparous and primiparous animals. In sows resampled at weaning, the number of pulses of LH was greater (P less than 0.05) in treated primiparous than in control sows. Postweaning concentrations of FSH in serum were unaffected by preweaning treatments. It was concluded that (1) litter separation and boar exposure increased basal and pulsatile secretion of LH in multiparous and primiparous sows; (2) lack of ovarian follicular development and oestradiol secretion may preclude expression of oestrus in primiparous sows during lactation, despite elevated concentrations of FSH and LH in serum; and (3) if elevated concentrations of cortisol and progesterone inhibit the onset of oestrous cycles, in response to litter separation and boar exposure during lactation, the effect is limited to primiparous sows.  相似文献

The effect of weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity, lactation length, breed and their interactions on changes of vaginal impedance in sows after weaning and during oestrus was examined. The impedance measurements were carried out by a four-electrode method. The interval from weaning to oestrus was significantly longer in sows with the length of lactation 21-25 days than 26-30 days and 31-36 days and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The interval from weaning to oestrus was negatively correlated with the length of lactation (r=-0.21; P<0.05), parity (r=-0.36; P<0.01) and oestrus duration (r=-0.26; P<0.01). The weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length had a significant effect and the breed of sows had no influence on the vaginal impedance in peri-oestrus. The decrease of vaginal impedance after weaning was delayed in sows with a longer weaning to oestrus interval and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The decline of vaginal impedance during peri-oestrus was more gradual in sows with a longer interval from weaning to oestrus, shorter lactation, primiparous sows and sows with the length of oestrus 36 h and 72 h and more. The nadir of vaginal impedance occurred earlier before oestrus in sows with a shorter oestrus. The interaction of weaning to oestrus interval with parity and oestrus duration and the interaction of oestrus duration with parity significantly affected the vaginal impedance in weaned sows. In conclusion, the weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length considerably influence the vaginal impedance in sows during peri-oestrus. The findings indicate that the impedance technique may be a useful method for a study of factors and processes that accelerate or slow down the return to oestrus after weaning and affect oestrus duration in sows.  相似文献

The object of this investigation was to determine the relationships between clinical findings and hormonal patterns in primiparous sows with different lactation length and litter size during lactation, weaning and to the first oestrus. Seven pairs of primiparous full sib sows were used to determine the effect of lactation length with normal litter size. One sow of each pair was assigned to nurse the piglets for 3 weeks (group A) while the other nusred for 5 weeks (group B). Another 8 primiparous sows (group C) were assigned to nurse 2–4 piglets during a 5-week lactation period. Oestrus detection was performed twice daily and laparoscopic examination every 2 weeks. If the sows did not come in oestrus within 3 weeks after weaning they were slaughtered. Peripheral plasma levels of progesterone, oestradiol-17β and LH were estimated by radioimmunoassays throughout the experimental period.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyze reproductive performance in purebred Landrace and Yorkshire sows with special reference to seasonal influence and parity number, under tropical conditions where day length is almost constant throughout the year. Data from three purebred sow herds in Thailand during the period from 1993 to 1996 were analyzed. The two breeds were present in all three herds. The analysis comprised records of 3848 Landrace sow litters and 2033 Yorkshire sow litters. The statistical models included the fixed effects of month, year, parity, breed of the sow, herd, and two-way interactions of breed-parity, breed-herd, breed-month, breed-year, parity-month, month-herd, year-herd and month-year. The random effect of sow within breed was included in all models. Analysis of covariance was performed to analyze the effect of temperature, humidity and heat index on number of total born per litter (NTB), weaning to first service interval (WSI) and farrowing rate (FR). Landrace sows had significantly higher NTB (0.6 piglets), number of live born per litter (0.5 piglets), and average birth weight (0.13 kg) than Yorkshire sows (P<0.001). Farrowing rate was 3.9% higher in Landrace sows than in Yorkshire sows (P<0.01). However, Yorkshire sows had significantly shorter WSI (P<0.001) and significantly higher proportion of sows served within 7 days after weaning (P<0.01) than Landrace sows. No breed differences were found in number of stillborn per litter and weaning to conception interval. Parity had significant effect on all reproductive parameters analyzed. Number of total born and live born per litter was significantly lower for sows farrowing during the rainy season than in other seasons. Farrowing rate was low for sows mated during the hot and rainy season. Weaning to service interval and WSI7 were prolonged for sows weaned during the hot and rainy season. Reproductive performance was significantly unfavorably influenced by elevated temperature and heat index after mating (NTB and FR) or during lactation (WSI).  相似文献

The reproductive performance of gilts and sows from two regions in Norway was investigated in a retrospective analysis of data from the litter recording system. In the Northern region (North; between 65°N and 71°N), there are extreme shifts in natural photoperiod between winter and summer. In the Southern region (South; between 59°N and 60°30′N), photoperiodic changes are less dramatic.

Gilts were 8 days older at first mating or insemination in the North than in the South (P<0.01). A significantly lower proportion of sows in the North were mated or inseminated within 5 days post-weaning than in the South, a difference present both among primiparous and multiparous sows (P<0.01). Overall farrowing rate in the North was lower than in the South, but litter size (total number born) among those pigs that farrowed was larger. After correction for year, month, breed and age at first service, there were still lower odds of farrowing for gilts in North than in South. Neither for primiparous nor multiparous sows were regional differences in farrowing probability significant when year, month, breed and weaning to service interval were included in the model. Gilts and primiparous sows had a lower probability of farrowing following insemination during summer or autumn months, but service month was not significantly related to the farrowing probability of multiparous sows.

For gilts, litter size was positively related to age at first service. For sows, litter size was lowest at weaning to service intervals between 6 and 10 days. Total numbers of piglets born per litter were estimated to be 0.36, 0.38 and 0.55 larger in the North than in the South (differences in least square means; gilts, primiparous sows and multiparous sows, respectively) (P<0.01). Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of a) parity and season of the year on the interval from weaning to rebreeding in sows and b) altered suckling intensity (ASI) and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) on the postpartum interval in primiparous and multiparous sows. Experiment I included 406 weaning-to-rebreeding intervals in 172 primiparous and multiparous sows. Primiparous sows returning to estrus during the spring and summer months had a longer (P<0.001) rebreeding interval (11.0 d) than the other groups (5.7 d). In Experiment II, 32 sows were assigned to a factorially designed experiment. The factors were ASI, GnRH and parity. Treatments were begun 7 d before weaning (about 4 wk of age). The ASI was accomplished by separating the sow from her litter for 12 h each day. The average interval from the beginning of treatment to the onset of estrus was 13.4 d and was not affected (P>0.33) by ASI, GnRH, parity or their interactions. None of the factors was found to affect the average weaning weight of the piglets (P>0.05); however, piglets in the ASI group were heavier (P<0.03) at 1-wk postweaning than those in the no-ASI group. The results showed that primiparous sows returning to estrus during the spring and summer months had the longest rebreeding interval. Additionally, neither GnRH nor ASI, separately or in conjunction, decreased the postpartum interval in sows.  相似文献

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an important pathogen that has a significant economic impact on the swine industry by imposing a high rate of mortality in suckling piglets. However, limited information on the productivity values of gilts and sows infected with PEDV is available. Here, we evaluate the productivity index in gilts and sows during the 1-year period before (19 January 2013 to 18 January 2014) and after (19 January 2014 to 18 January 2015) a PEDV outbreak from a 2000-sow breeding herd in Taiwan. The farrowing rate (FR), return rate (RR), total pigs born per litter (TB), pigs born alive per litter (BA), weaning pigs per litter (WPL), pre-weaning mortality, percentage of sows mated by 7 days after weaning, weaning to first service interval (WFSI), mated female nonproductive days (NPDs), replacement rate of sows and sow culling rate were compared using productive records. The FR (-9.6%), RR (+9.8%), TB (-1.6), BA (-1.1), WPL (-1.1), sows mated by 7 days after weaning (-6.9%), WFSI (+0.8 days), NPDs (+6.9 days) and sow culling rate (+7.2%) were significantly different between the 1-year pre-PEDV outbreak period and the post-PEDV outbreak period. Impacts of the PEDV infection on the reproductive performance were more severe in pregnant gilts than in sows. In conclusion, these findings indicate that the outbreak of PEDV caused an increase in the rate of NPDs in breeding herds.  相似文献

Three intermittent suckling (IS) regimes were evaluated for their effects on lactational oestrus and subsequent fertility. Control sows were weaned (CW; n = 38) at d 26 ± 2 of lactation. In IS19-7D (n=40) and IS19-14D (n=42) sows, IS started at d 19 ± 1 of lactation and sows were weaned 7 or 14 d later. In IS26-7D (n=41), IS started at d 26 ± 1 of lactation and sows were weaned 7d later. During IS, sows were separated from their piglets for 10h/day. Oestrus detection was performed twice daily without a boar and ovulation was confirmed by ultrasound once a week. In IS19-7D, IS19-14D and IS26-7D, respectively, 50%, 64% and 61% of the sows showed oestrus and ovulation during IS (P>0.05), and, of the remaining sows, 100%, 93%, and 69% showed oestrus in the first week after weaning. In CW sows, 95% showed oestrus in the first week after weaning. Parity 1 sows were considerably less likely than older parities (23% vs. 68%) to show oestrus in lactation. Pregnancy rate of the first post partum oestrus (during lactation or after weaning) was 89% (CW), 92% (IS19-7D), 80% (IS19-14D) and 77% (IS26-7D) (P>0.05) and subsequent litter size was 14.5 ± 0.5, 14.5 ± 0.6, 15.3 ± 0.5 and 15.2 ± 0.8, respectively (P>0.05). Sows mated during lactation had similar pregnancy rate and litter size to those mated after weaning. Hence, ongoing lactation for the first 2-9 d of pregnancy did not negatively affect fertility. A total of 50-64% of IS sows showed lactational oestrus, regardless of the stage of lactation. Pregnancy rates and litter size were similar to control sows, and were not affected by stage of lactation at mating.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the ovulation rate and the weaning-to-service interval (WSI) of sows in relation to their body weight loss during lactation in tropical climatic conditions. Effect of lactation length (LL), number of total born piglets, number of live born piglets, litter birth weight, average piglet birth weight, number of pigs weaned, litter weaning weight and average pig weaned weight on sow weight loss during lactation were also studied. This study was conducted in two commercial purebred sow herds (A, B) in the central part of Thailand from August to December 1997. The herds had both Landrace (L) and Yorkshire (Y) sows. The 123 sows (55 L and 68 Y) in herd A and 153 sows (95 L and 58 Y) in herd B, parity 1-4, were weighed within 4 days after farrowing and at weaning. Lactation length, litter size at birth and at weaning, litter weight at birth and at weaning, and WSI were recorded for each of these sows. In herd A, 52 sows (20 L and 32 Y) were examined once by laparoscopy between days 8 and 14 after AI-service. These sows had farrowed at least seven piglets in the previous parturition. The numbers of corpora lutea (CL) in both ovaries were counted, and were assumed to equal the ovulation rate. L-sows had significantly (P < 0.05) higher relative weight loss during lactation (RWL) than Y-sows. The RWL increased by 0.7% for each extra pig weaned. When LL increased by 1 day, within the interval of 17-34 days, RWL decreased by 0.6%. Sows with a high weight loss had significantly (P < 0.05) longer WSI than sows with medium or low weight loss. Weight loss had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on WSI in parity 1 and 2 sows. Y-sows had more CL than L-sows (15.7 versus 14.0) (P < 0.05). RWL, parity and regression on lactation length had no significant effect on number of CL. In conclusion, sows with higher number of pigs weaned lose more weight. Under the restricted feeding regime applied, high weight loss during lactation prolongs WSI in parity 1 and 2 sows, but has no influence on the ovulation rate at first oestrus after weaning. The ovulation rate is higher in Yorkshire than in Landrace sows. The ovulation rate is independent of parity.  相似文献

In a retrospective study, based on data from the national litter recording system, farrowing rate and litter size of sows served (inseminated or mated) during the lactation period (n = 574) or after a lactation period shorter than 28 days (n = 14,219) were analysed. The results were compared with the corresponding figures for sows with lactation length between 28 and 35 days and weaning to first service interval of 4 or 5 days (reference group; n = 41,741). The farrowing rate of the reference group was 80.9% and subsequent litter size was 13.7 total piglets born. Among sows served prior to weaning, the farrowing rates and litter sizes were significantly lower for those served earlier than 22 days post-farrowing compared to those served later (P < 0.05). Shorter lactations than 28 days and service within 10 days post-weaning led to lower farrowing rates than in the reference group (P < 0.01). Significant differences were seen after different lactation lengths. After correction for weaning to service interval, preceding litter size weaned, parity, breed and the interaction between parity and breed, litter size was significantly and positively associated with the preceding lactation length. The study shows that service within the first 3 weeks post-farrowing results in reduced reproductive performance.  相似文献

Selection for increased litter size have generated hyper-prolific sows that nurses large litters, however limited knowledge is available regarding the connection between milk production, feed intake and body mobilization of these modern sows. The aim of the current study was to determine what characterized sows with high milk production and nursing large litters, differences between sows of different parities and effects of lactational performance on next reproductive cycle. In total 565 sows (parity 1 to 4) were studied from 7 days before farrowing until weaning. On day 2 postpartum litters were standardized to 14 piglets. Weight and back fat thickness of sows were measured at day 7 prepartum, day 2 postpartum and at weaning. Litters were weighed at day 2 and at weaning. Pearson correlation coefficients between variables were calculated and regression models were developed. The average daily feed intake (ADFI) of the sows was 6.1±1.1 kg/day, average daily gain (ADG) of the litter was 2.92±0.53 kg/day and sows weaned 13.0±1.1 piglets. First parity sows generally had a lower ADFI and milk production and a decrease in total born piglets in next litter compared with parity 2 to 4 sows, which could be explained by a relatively higher proportion of their body reserves being mobilized compared with multiparous sows. The ADG of the litter was positively related by ADFI of the sows, litter size and BW loss and increasing the ADFI with 1 kg/day throughout lactation likely increased the ADG of the litter with 220 to 440 g/day in parity 1 to 4, respectively. Increasing the ADFI by 1 kg/day reduced the BW loss with 6.6 to 13.9 kg of parity 1 to 4 sows, respectively, during lactation, whereas increasing the average milk yield with 1 kg/day raised the BW loss with 4.3 to 21.0 kg of the four parities during lactation. The number of total born piglets in the next litter was positively related to the number of piglets born in the previous litter. In conclusion, both a high feed intake and a high mobilization of body reserves was a prerequisite for a high milk production. The sows might be very close to the physical limit of what they can ingest and future research should therefore, focus on optimizing the dietary energy and nutrient concentrations of diets for lactating hyper-prolific sows and herein distinguish between primiparous and multiparous sows.  相似文献

The present study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the influence of birth litter size, birth parity number, performance test parameters (growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight) and age at first mating (AFM) of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows. Traits analysed included remating rate in gilts (RRG), litter size, weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), remating rate in sows and farrowing rate (FR). Data were collected from 11 Swedish Landrace (L) and 8 Swedish Yorkshire (Y) nucleus herds and included 20712 farrowing records from sow parities 1-5. Sows that farrowed for the first time during 1993-1997, having complete records of performance test and AFM, were followed up to investigate their subsequent reproductive performance until their last farrowing in 1999. Analysis of variance and multiple regression were applied to continuous data. Logistic regression was applied to categorical data. The analyses were based on the same animals and the records were split into six groups of females, i.e. gilts, primiparous sows, and sows in parities 2-5, respectively. Each additional piglet in the litter in which the gilt was born was associated with an increase of her own litter size of between 0.07 and 0.1 piglets per litter (P<0.001). Gilts born from sow parity 1 had a longer WSI as primiparous sows compared with gilts born from sow parity 4 (0.3 days; P<0.05) or parity 5 (0.4 days; P<0.01). Gilts with a higher growth rate of up to 100kg body weight had a larger litter size (all parities 1-5; P<0.05), shorter WSI (all parities 1-5; P<0.05) and higher FR (parities 2 and 5; P<0.05) than gilts with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a high backfat thickness at 100kg body weight had a shorter WSI as primiparous sows (P<0.001) compared with low backfat gilts, and 0.1 piglets per litter more as second parity sows (P<0.01). A 10 day increase in AFM resulted in an increase in litter size of about 0.1 piglet for primiparous sows (P<0.001) and a decrease (P<0.05) for sow parities 4 and 5.  相似文献

Blood samples were collected from primiparous sows via indwelling jugular cannulae at 15-min intervals for 12 h before and for 24 h (2 sows) or 48 h (10 sows) after weaning and then every 4 h until behavioural oestrus. Weaning to oestrus intervals ranged from 3 to 10 days and 2 sows showed no signs of oestrus and had not ovulated by Days 11 and 16 after weaning. Prolactin concentrations in plasma decreased significantly (P less than 0.001) and reached basal levels 1-2 h after weaning in all sows whilst plasma progesterone concentrations remained basal until approximately 30 h after the preovulatory LH surge in sows that ovulated. Elevated concentrations of prolactin or progesterone during the post-weaning period were, therefore, not responsible for delayed restoration of cyclicity. Overall, mean LH concentrations rose significantly (P less than 0.001) from 0.22 +/- 0.02 during the 12-h period before weaning to 0.38 +/- 0.03 ng/ml during the 12-h post-weaning period. After weaning, pulsatile and basal LH secretions were markedly increased for sows that showed an early return to oestrus (less than or equal to 4 days) compared with sows showing a longer weaning to oestrus interval but a correlation did not exist between either of these LH characteristics and the time taken to resume cyclicity. Mean LH concentrations before weaning were, however, inversely related (r = -0.649; P less than 0.05) to the weaning to oestrus interval. Overall, mean FSH concentrations rose significantly (P less than 0.001) from 151.1 +/- 6.2 (s.e.m.) ng/ml in the 12-h period immediately before weaning to 187.7 +/- 9.7 ng/ml in the subsequent 12-h period but there was no correlation between FSH concentrations, before or after weaning, and the interval from weaning to oestrus. However, a significant correlation was apparent between ovulation rate and peak concentrations of the rise in FSH after weaning (r = 0.746; P less than 0.05) and overall mean FSH values (r = 0.645; P less than 0.05). It is concluded that both LH and FSH concentrations in peripheral blood rose in response to removal of the suckling stimulus at weanling. The increase in LH pulse frequency associated with weaning was not directly related to the weaning to oestrus interval although a specific pattern of LH secretion was observed in sows showing an early return to oestrus (less than or equal to 4 days).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Trials to investigate the effects of limited suckling on sow reproduction and piglet growth were conducted using 41 first parity and 32 second parity Yorkshire sows. Separation of sows from their litters (22 hrs/day, days 21-35 postpartum) induced estrus in 60% of primiparous and 72% of second parity sows during lactation. Compared to control group animals, primiparous sows had higher weaning weights and second parity sows higher rates of embryo survival on day 30 of gestation. Piglets subjected to suckling restriction had weights, at 2 weeks after weaning, equal to those weaned after 5 weeks of unrestricted suckling. We conclude that suckling restriction can provide the dual benefits of an extended piglet nursing period and a decreased breeding to breeding interval in sows.  相似文献

A high proportion of piglets fail to adapt to the changing composition of their diet at weaning, resulting in weight loss and increased susceptibility to pathogens. Polyamines are present in sow milk and promote neonatal maturation of the gut. We hypothesised that oral spermine and spermidine supplementation before weaning would increase piglet growth and promote gastrointestinal development at weaning. In Experiment One, one pair of liveweight (LW)-matched piglets per litter from first and third lactation sows received 2 ml of a 0 (Control) or 463 nmol/ml spermine solution at 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 days of age (n=6 piglets/treatment per parity). Villus height and crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum were measured at weaning (day 23 postpartum). In Experiment Two, piglets suckling 18 first and 18 third lactation sows were used. Within each litter, piglets received 2 ml of either water (Control), 463 nmol/ml spermine solution or 2013 nmol/ml spermidine solution at 14, 16, 18, 22 and 24 days of age (n=54 piglets/treatment per sow parity). Piglets were weighed individually at 14, 18, 24 (weaning) and 61 days of age. In Experiment One, oral spermine supplementation resulted in a 41% increase in villus height, a 21% decrease in crypt depth and 79% decrease in the villus height : crypt depth ratio compared with control piglets (P<0.01). In Experiment Two, spermine and spermidine-supplemented piglets suckling first lactation sows grew faster (P<0.05) between days 14 and 18 postpartum than control piglets: 0.230±0.011 and 0.227±0.012 v. 0.183±0.012 kg/day, respectively. Spermine supplementation tended (P<0.1) to increase piglet LW gain from weaning to day 37 post-weaning compared with control piglets (0.373±0.009 v. 0.341±0.010 kg/day). In conclusion, spermine supplementation increased villus height at weaning, and appears to have the potential to improve the pre- and post-weaning growth of conventionally weaned piglets.  相似文献

In pig production, parturition progress is a key event for sow's reproductive performance, evaluated by piglet survival and piglets' performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of feeding a high-fibre (HF) diet during gestation on parturition progress and reproductive performance of sows. Forty-two primiparous sows (Large-White × Landrace crossbred) were fed during gestation either a control diet (C diet; 2.40 kg/day, 3.2% crude fibre, in % of dry matter (DM)), or a HF diet (2.80 kg/day, 12.4% crude fibre, in % of DM). All sows received 33 MJ digestible energy per day. Continuous video recordings were done on the parturition day to determine postural changes (standing, sitting, lying) and behavioural activities (nesting behaviour, uterine contractions, restlessness, social behaviour towards piglets) during parturition. Duration of parturition and individual birth intervals were also measured. Piglets' growth was evaluated by weekly weighing from birth until weaning, at 26.5 days of age. Sows were weighed and backfat thickness was measured at mating, on day 105 of gestation, on the 1st day post partum, and at weaning. Durations of parturition and of birth intervals were not affected by the gestation diet and averaged 211 ± 12 min and 16.5 ± 0.9 min (mean ± s.e.), respectively. During the parturition progress, the gestation diet did not affect the frequency and the time devoted to postural and behavioural activities. Dietary treatment during gestation did not influence duration of gestation and weaning-to-oestrus interval, as well as litter size, and number of stillborn and weaned piglets. Piglet weight at birth did not differ between gestation dietary treatments but piglets nursed by HF sows showed a 13.5% greater growth rate during the 1st week of life (P < 0.01) and tended to be heavier at weaning (P = 0.06) compared with C piglets. The HF sows were leaner at the end of gestation (P < 0.05), but variations of sows' weight during gestation and lactation were not affected by the gestation diet. All sows lost the same amount of backfat thickness during lactation. During lactation, the average daily feed intake was not significantly affected by the gestation diet. This study shows that substituting a control diet for a HF diet during gestation has limited effects on farrowing progress and reproductive performance, but improved piglets' growth rate during the 1st week of life and tended to increase their live weight at weaning.  相似文献

The influence of social subordination on sexual motivation during oestrus was studied using 36 sows of which 24 treatment sows were housed in pairs and 12 control sows were housed individually in 12 and 6 m(2) pens, respectively. Video recordings were made from 07:00 h to 19:00 h during the first 2 days after grouping, which took place 3 days after weaning of the piglets. Based on the aggressive interactions between the pair-housed sows, their rank was determined. From day 4 after weaning, a test for sexual proceptive behaviour was carried out twice daily and back-pressure test was carried out four times daily in order to detect standing oestrus. When standing oestrus had occurred, transrectal ultrasonographical scans were also carried out in order to determine if ovulation took place. The proceptivity test took place in a T-maze with a 2 m x 10 m runway ending in two 1.5 m x 1.5 m goal boxes each adjacent to a stimulus compartment. One compartment contained an adult sexually experienced boar and the other was empty. Latency to and duration of time spent close to the boar and time spent presenting were recorded during the 10-min test period. On the first day that standing oestrus had been detected, a test for sexual receptivity was also carried out by introducing the sow to a mature boar in his home pen (9 m(2)). Sexual- and fear-related behaviour of sow and boar were recorded until mating was terminated or the sow had spent 5 min in the pen without mating being initiated. During oestrus the proceptivity test showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the time spent standing close to the boar and in presenting for single-housed sows and for pair-housed dominant sows, but not for subordinate sows. During oestrus subordinate sows spent significantly less time standing close to the boar than the dominant sows (P = 0.01) and the same tended to be the case for presenting (P = 0.07). In the receptivity test more subordinate sows than dominant sows fled (40% versus 0%, P = 0.001) and more subordinate sows than dominant sows squealed (58% versus 15%, P = 0.02) as a response to boar stimulation. In both tests, the single-housed sows differed neither from the dominant nor the subordinate sows. There was however no difference between the groups in the weaning to oestrous interval, duration of oestrus and number of piglet born. In addition, all the sows ovulated. The results indicate that social subordination can have significant consequences for sexual motivation in sows. Subordinate sows showed fear-related behaviour in response to boar stimulation even when they were in standing oestrus. Thus, both heat detection and mating may be impaired in subordinate sows. The results emphasise the importance to alleviate the social stress experienced by subordinates as well as the need for stock people to pay special attention to these animals when they are to be mated or inseminated.  相似文献

Alfaprostol, a new prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF) analog was given in a first trial at two dose levels known to be luteolytic (1 and 2 mg) to 200 sows and first litter gilts at the day of weaning after a 21-day lactation period; 189 controls received saline only. The treatment with alfaprostol shortened the interval to heat (6.0 vs 11.3 days; p<0.01) and increased the percentage of animals coming into heat within 10 days (84.0 vs 65.5%; p<0.01). Fertility to a.i. and litter size at the subsequent parturition were normal. In a second trial, 100 first litter gilts and 100 sows received alfaprostol, 1 or 2 mg, respectively, during July and August when high environmental temperatures tend to increase the rate of anestrus. Again, treatment with alfaprostol shortened effectively the interval to heat (5.9 vs 17.4 days in gilts, p<0.001; 5.6 vs 9.7 days in sows; p<0.01) and greatly increased the number of animals in heat (81 vs 47% in gilts, 83 vs 62% in sows; p<0.001). The effect on the seasonal incidence of clinical anestrus was marked; it was more pronounced in gilts than in sows, expressed by the length of time it took to resume cyclic functions and the lower percentage of animals coming into heat (p<0.001). The effect of alfaprostol was equally well expressed in first litter gilts and sows. In a third trial, 295 anestrous sows and gilts were treated on day 22 after weaning with either 2 mg alfaprostol, or 400 I.U. PMSG+200 I.U. hCG, or saline. Within five days after weaning, 38% of the alfaprostol treated, and 78% and 23% of the animals treated with PMSG/hCG and saline came into heat.  相似文献
