Phascogale tapoatafa is a squirrel-sized carnivorous marsupial (Dasyuridae) found in dry eucalyptus forests of Australia. Radio-tracking and live-trapping studies at three sites in Victoria indicated that population densities were typically low, with females occupying home ranges averaging 41 ha (minimum convex polygon method) that were intrasexually exclusive. Male home ranges (mean 106 ha) overlapped extensively with females and other males, and expanded during the short breeding season to an average length of 2.7 km. When presented with the faeces of unfamiliar conspecifics, both female and male P. tapoatafa investigated the faeces of females significantly longer than those of males, suggesting that the exclusive home ranges of females are reinforced by olfactory communication, and that males are less responsive to the presence of potential rivals than to potential mates. Both sexes foraged throughout their home range, but the core area of intensive use was less than one-third of the total area traversed. The spatial organization of P. tapoatafa differs markedly from that of the closely related species Antechinus stuartii , but is similar to that of the only other extensively studied carnivorous marsupial, Dasyurus geoffroii.  相似文献

Radio-tracking of spotted-tailed quolls Dasyurus maculatus (Marsupialia: Dasyuridae) in the forested ranges of north-eastern New South Wales revealed that home ranges were extensive, with males occupying large, overlapping ranges [minimum convex polygon (MCP) up to 757 ha] and females occupying smaller, non-overlapping territories (MCP up to 175 ha). Quolls were partly arboreal, although most activity occurred on the ground or on fallen logs. Hollow logs were most frequently used as dens, but rock crevices, burrows, tree hollows and artificial structures were also used. Individual quolls were located in up to nine different dens and, with the exception of maternal dens, rarely sheltered in the same location on successive days. The large home ranges of the spotted-tailed quoll and the non-overlapping nature of female ranges necessitate very large areas of habitat to support viable populations. Fallen timber, used extensively for shelter and in travelling, may serve to enhance the quality of habitat for the species, and should be retained by forest and wildlife managers.  相似文献

Capillaries within the central nervous system (CNS) of eutherian mammals form meshworks with numerous anastomoses, whereas capillaries in the CNS of marsupials consist entirely of hairpin-like loops, without anastomotic interconnections. Counter-current blood flow in capillary loops may have been important in the evolutionary development of a cerebral vascular supply. However, loops are not found in eutherian mammals, perhaps because of a limited benefit to the diffusive conductance of gases.  相似文献

Human activities such as regulating river flows, logging and removing fallen timber adversely affect floodplain ecosystems around the world. Studies of the dynamics of floodplain-dwelling populations will help to understand the effects of altered flood regimes and to manage and restore floodplains. The yellow-footed antechinus (Antechinus flavipes) is the only small, native, carnivorous mammal (Marsupialia) on many degraded floodplains in south-eastern Australia, where its abundance appears to increase with proximity to floods, which is partly due to enhanced survival (as inferred from increased abundance of second-year females). We analysed population genetic patterns and maternity among samples collected following the period of postnatal dispersal, in the years preceding and following planned floods, at different distances from flood locations along the Murray River. Our genic and genotypic analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region haplotypes and 11 microsatellite loci demonstrated high immigration rates into sites in close proximity to floods. All sampled males emigrated from their natal sites to points of capture, while some females were philopatric. There were high rates of dispersal of males among all sites within a partially flooded forest, while females dispersed more to locations closest to inundations rather than to distant places. These results suggest that environmental flows are beneficial to antechinus both by enhancing adult survival and promoting dispersal of females.  相似文献

Skin development of the Northern native cat was examined from birth to weaning at 150 days post partum. An outer layer of cells, termed the periderm or epitrichium, is present on the epidermis of the newborn. This layer of cells is not discernible at 7 days post partum. Skin development of the native cat differs from that of the eutherian mammal. The periderm of the eutherian is no longer discernible when the developing hairs first penetrate the epidermis. In the marsupial, this loss of the periderm occurs well before the appearance of follicles. Melanocytes and Langerhans cells are seen at day 23 post partum, follicles at day 30, sebaceous glands at day 59, and sweat glands at day 67. Thus, when the mother first leaves her young in the nest at about days 60 to 70 of lactation, the skin is at a stage of development that will assist the young with thermoregulation. The skin continues to develop throughout lactation and attains an adult appearance by day 150 post partum.  相似文献

The development of the mesonephros and metanephros was examined in the marsupial Northern native cat, Dasyurus hallucatus, from birth through to the end of lactation. The mesonephros was present at birth, reached a maximum volume 11 days after birth and had regressed completely by day 30. The metanephros was present on day 2; glomeruli were first seen on day 8, and nephrogenesis continued until day 89 post partum. The newborn native cat is at a very primitive stage of development compared to other marsupials. However, at weaning, like other marsupial species, the native cat has developed a fully morphological and functional urinary system.  相似文献

The life histories of carnivorous marsupials, or dasyurids, make them useful subjects for studying maternal investment, such as sex ratio and lactational investment. One group of annual breeding dasyurids are male semelparous, strongly sexually dimorphic, produce large litters that weigh two to three times the weight of the mother at weaning and show biases in siring success and sex ratio. Red-tailed phascogales Phascogale calura belong to this group and in captivity they have shown biases in siring success with body weight. The growth rates of young of this species were investigated to determine whether sex-biased maternal investment occurs. No relationship was evident between maternal weight and the sex ratio of young, indicating no sex-ratio adjustment with maternal condition. In contrast, a positive relationship was evident between maternal weight and the weight of offspring at weaning, with weaning weight being correlated with weight at maturity. Dimorphism in weight emerged during suckling, with an average dimorphic ratio of 1.5 achieved by maturity. In contrast, dimorphism in skeletal measures did not emerge until after weaning, with an average dimorphic ratio of 1.14 achieved by maturity. The sex differences in growth during suckling provide support for a male bias in maternal investment.  相似文献

The silver-headed antechinus, A. argentus, is a recently-discovered, threatened carnivorous marsupial known from only two small, isolated montane populations within central-eastern Queensland, Australia. Here, we present the first study of the species’ life-history characteristics. Antechinuses are well-known for their spectacular annual male die-off at the close of a one- to three-week mating period. The genus also displays sexual dimorphism for size—with males up to three times heavier than females. The A. argentus population we studied at Kroombit Tops National Park over 2 years fitted the norm for the genus, with strong evidence of both a synchronised male die-off (in June/July) and significantly larger males than females. We surveyed two proximate sites at Kroombit Tops where A. argentus was previously known to occur. Unexpectedly, there was a marked difference in A. argentus numbers between years and sites. We hypothesise that the disparate capture rates between sites may be at least in part linked to the effects of fire on vegetation. The marked fluctuation in capture numbers between years, coupled with annual male die-off raises concerns over the future of the Kroombit Tops population of this threatened mammal.  相似文献

Summary The effects of restricted feeding schedules on the circadian rhythms of wheel-running of Dasyurus viverrinus were examined under a light/dark cycle and in constant darkness (experiment 1) and in constant light (experiment 2). The results of the 2 experiments showed that: (1) in contrast to the light/dark cycle, restricted feeding is only a weak zeitgeber for the wheel-running activity rhythms of D. viverrinus; (2) restricted feeding elicits meal anticipatory activity in D. viverrinus comparable to that elicited by restricted feeding in the rat; (3) transient cycles of the anticipatory activity free-run with a period different to that of the main component of activity for several cycles after the termination of restricted feeding; and (4) activity suggestive of beating between 2 oscillators occurs during restricted feeding and after the termination of restricted feeding. Taken together the latter 3 observations suggest that the activity rhythms of D. viverrinus are controlled by at least 2 separate circadian oscillators.  相似文献

All four species of Australian quolls (Dasyurusspecies) have declined since European settlement in terms of bothrange and population numbers. Six highly polymorphic simplesequence repeats (CAn microsatellites) were used to estimate thegenetic variability and population differentiation within andamong twenty populations (including museum specimens from sixpopulations), as a preliminary means of assessing populationconservation status and relative levels of variability withinmembers of the genus. Overall mean expected heterozygosity (HE)and corrected allelic diversity (A) were highest among westernquolls. Northern quolls, eastern quolls, and tiger quolls werenot significantly different from each other in either measure. There were also significant differences in diversity amongpopulations within species. Genetic differentiation wasestimated by a number of methods and showed that themicrosatellites used here were useful for defining differencesboth among species and populations. Allele frequency data weresummarised by two-dimensional MDS, which was able to partitionpopulations into distinct species clusters. Similarly, theassignment test was able to assign most individuals to both thecorrect species and population levels. Results of MDS and theassignment test may prove useful in forensic applications. Genetic distance and subdivision between pairs of populationswere assessed by two means based on different mutation models formicrosatellites: infinite alleles model (Nei's D, FST) andstepwise mutation model (Goldstein's mu;2, RST). Pairwisemeasures of population subdivision indicate that most populationsshould be conserved as separate management units. We discussresults of these analyses in terms of applications toconservation for each of the four Australian species of quoll andprovide a genetic basis for future population monitoring in thesespecies.  相似文献

The quolls are the largest native predators remaining on mainland Australia. We describe the cross‐species testing of all available microsatellite loci for representative across the entire distribution of quolls, with the additional characterization of five new microsatellite loci from the Chuditch. All primers produced clear and polymorphic amplification patterns containing between nine and 17 alleles and with high levels of diagnostic variability. These highly polymorphic primers make them useful additional tools in planning conservation strategies across related conspecifics, many of which are under threat.  相似文献

The riparian vegetation of a basin in the NW Spain was studied to establish its spatial variation pattern and to relate floristic and structural differences in the community to environmental factors. Eighty-seven sampling units in 43 sampling stations were used. Samples were classified in 5 groups using Two Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). Three groups represented reaches with riparian wood along their banks: Mediterranean alderwoods and shrubby willow woods. The remaining two corresponded to floodplains with vegetation colonizing moderately eutrophicated deposits of gravel. Structural characteristics of richness and diversity differentiated the alder woods. In these, the shaded environment created by the woody species limited herbaceous vegetation development. This was dominated by Carex acuta subsp. broteriana. Classification and CCA ordination results were compared. The TWINSPAN groups could be recognized in the CCA graph. The ordination was related to a pollution gradient associated with altitude. This pollution gradient involved bank ruderalization, incorporation of nitrophilous species and a decrease in the vegetation quality. The influence of the lithological features on vegetation was also evident.  相似文献
