Biological samples were collected simultaneously with environmental quality investigations. Studies of metal levels in biological (hair and teeth) and environmental (soil and air) samples were performed in Zwardoń during 1991/1992. Zwardoń is a small mountain resort village, situated on the border pass of Zwardoń, in the close proximity of the southwestern border of Poland. Heavy metal levels in soil, air, and chemical metals forms in the soil were examined. Pearson’s product correlation in soil (for total concentration of heavy metals and each chemical form) in hair and in teeth was calculated to investigate bioavailability of heavy metals in human organism. We received essential correlations simultaneously between: Pb vs Mn in exchangeable form of metal in soil, in teeth and in soil (total); Cd vs Zn and Mn vs Co in organically bound form in soil and in teeth and soil (total); and Cu vs Zn in all investigated samples (teeth, hair, soil total, and organically bound form in soil); Mn vs Co and Cr vs Mn in residual form in soil, in teeth, and in soil (total) and between Co vs Ni for hair, soil (total), and residual form in soil.

The objective of our study is to correlate Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, Br, Sr, and Mo concentrations in human teeth crown, root, and bone. The samples, teeth from a lower jaw bone and the lower jaw bone itself, were obtained from a 97-yr-old female cadaver. Two hundred milligrams of crown and root of the teeth, and lower jaw bones were fixed to a Kapton film and irradiated with a 3.8-MeV external proton beam from an 8-MV FN Tandem Van de Graaff Accelerator. TheF-test was used to analyze the difference between crown, root, and bone. It resulted in the following: For Fe, Zn, and Pb, the comparison showed significant differences among the three sample populations of tooth crown, root, and bone; for Cu, Br, Sr, and Mo, the comparison showed no significant differences among all three sample populations. Several elements in the samples were highly interrelated.

Seventeen metals were measured in scalp hair samples from cerebral palsy patients (CPPs) and controls. Samples were collected from 95 CPPs and 93 controls. The nitric acid-perchloric acid wet digestion procedure was used for quantification of the selected metals by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentrations of Ag, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Li, and Mg were significantly higher and those of Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Sb were lower in the hair of CPPs compared with controls. A strong positive correlation was found between Ca and Mg in the hair of controls but not in that of CPPs. Antimony was found significantly negative in terms of its correlation with Co and Cu in CPPs group but not in the controls. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the data extracted seven factors for CPPs and six factors for controls. Cluster analysis (CA) was also used to support the PCA results. The study evidenced some specific source of Mg and Sb in the hair of CPPs.

Much is known about the essentiality of the halogens fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), and iodine (I), but very little has been discussed with respect to bromine (Br). As a member of the halogen family its chemical properties are comparable to those of other halogens, but its presence has been masked by the presence of I and Cl in chemical analyses. By virtue of new technology and a special computerized machine called the Kevex Model 0600 Energy Dispersive X-Ray Induced X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDXRF), we can specifically identify bromine in different compartments and verify its concentration accurately. In order to establish standard values of Br concentrations and evaluate the nature of its presence in humans, samples of serum, urine, and hair were collected from ten healthy adult males and analyzed for bromine content. Our samples had normal distributions, with serum bromine levels ranging from 3.2 to 5.6 μg/mL, urine levels between 0.3 to 7.0 μg/mL, and hair levels determined from 1.1 to 49.0 μg/mL. These levels, especially those of serum bromine, have been encountered by other examiners whose samples also had normal distributions. These findings suggest to us that bromine may well be an essential trace element, as are its other halogen family members.

Abstract

Heavy metals in vegetables are of great concern worldwide due to their potential bioaccumulation in human. This review-based study researched the concentrations of heavy metals in vegetables from all provinces of China between 2004 and 2018, and assessed the health risk for the residents. The results displayed the highest Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn concentrations in vegetables were 0.192?mg/kg (west area), 0.071?mg/kg (central area), 3.961?mg/kg (central area), and 10.545?mg/kg (central area), which were lower than the maximum allowable concentration. In the national scale, the weighted average level of heavy metals in vegetables was found to be in the order of Zn?>?Cu?>?Pb?>?Cd. The hazard index (HI) of each province showed that beside Anhui and Hunan province, residents in other provinces of China faced a low high risk of Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn. However, people consuming vegetables faced a high risk of Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn in Anhui and Hunan provinces. This research may provide insight into heavy metal accumulation in vegetables and forecast to residents to cope with these problems for improved human health.

The mangroves of Kerala on the south-west coast of India are fast disappearing due to land reclamation and other anthropogenic disturbances. There are very few ecosystem level studies made in these much threatened biotopes in Kerala. The present study involves the measurement of heavy metals in the mangrove flora and sediments of three mangrove habitats along the Kerala coast. Sampling was carried out for a period of one year at bi-monthly intervals, with concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu,Zn,Pb and Co analysed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. An appreciable variation was observed in metal concentrations indifferent mangrove species. Cu, Zn and Pb were found to be in higher concentrations in Avicennia officinalis whereas higher levels of Fe, Mn and Co were observed in the species Barringtonia racemosa. The analysis of heavy metals indicated a high level of metal pollutants such as Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb in the mangrove habitats of Quilon and Veli compared to the relatively uncontaminated areas of Kumarakom. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Analysis of trace metals from sediment and fish collected from eight locations in Lake Manzala, Egypt, during May, June and July of 2011, indicated anthropogenic impacts. The highest concentrations of metals, except Mn and Sr, were detected at Bahr Al-Baqar (S1) which drains from Cairo. At the other sampling locations, the concentrations of selected trace metals fall below the levels of concern while the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) suggests unpolluted conditions for the majority of the studied metals at most sites. However, near the Bahr Al-Baqar (S1) drain concentrations of Ag, Hg and Zn fall above the Long and Morgan's (1990) effects range low (ERL) while Pb was above their effects range median (ERM). Igeo values suggest unpolluted to moderately polluted condition for As and Sn, moderately polluted conditions for Zn, moderate to extremely polluted conditions for Ag, and severely to extremely polluted conditions for Pb at Bahr Al-Baqar. Two sites (Legan, S5, and Al-Ginka, S8) were indicated by Igeo as moderately polluted for Ag while two other sites (West of Bashar, S3, and Al Dehdy, S6) were indicated as unpolluted to moderately polluted for Ag. The Legan and Al-Ginka sites were also indicated as being moderately polluted for Zn. Similar to the sediments, the highest concentrations of metals in fish tissue were from Bahr Al-Baqar (S1). Al concentrations at all sites were comparable to concentrations known to cause lesions in fish. At all sites concentrations of selected trace metals in fish tissue were below the limits set by the FAO.

This investigation combines confocal microscopy with the cation-specific fluorescent dyes Fluo-3 and BTC-5N to localize calcium and heavy metals along the length of intact lobster (Homarus americanus) hepatopancreatic tubules and isolated cells. A metallothionein-specific antibody, developed in mollusks with cross-reactivity in crustaceans, showed the tissue-specific occurrence of this metal-binding protein in several organ systems in lobster and in single cell types isolated from lobster hepatopancreas. Individual lobster hepatopancreatic epithelial cell types were separated into pure single cell type suspensions for confocal and antibody experiments. Intact hepatopancreatic tubules showed high concentrations of both calcium and heavy metals at the distal tips of tubules where mitotic stem cells (E-cells) are localized. In addition, a concentrated distribution of calcium signal within isolated single premolt E-cells in solution was disclosed that might suggest an endoplasmic reticulum compartmentation of this cation within these stem cells. Both E- and R-cells showed significantly (P < 0.05) greater intracellular calcium concentrations in premolt than intermolt, suggesting the accumulation of this cation in these cells prior to the molt. Antibody studies with lobster tissues indicated that the hepatopancreas possessed 5-10 times the metallothionein concentration as other lobster organ systems and that isolated E-cells from the hepatopancreas displayed more than twice the binding protein concentrations of other cells of this organ or those of blood cells. These results suggest that crustacean hepatopancreatic stem cells (E-cells) and R-cells play significant roles in calcium and heavy metal homeostasis in this tissue. Interactions between the four hepatopancreatic cell types in this regulatory activity remain to be elucidated.

This study was aimed to assess the bioaccumulation and concentration level of three heavy metals such as Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) in the riverine water and edible fish, Channa punctatus obtained from River Kosi, Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. These toxic heavy metals are released into the environment because of E-waste, industrial activities, municipal urban runoff, coal burning, fertilizers etc., then paved the way into the aquatic system due to direct input, atmospheric deposition, and erosions caused by rain. There is every apprehension of aquatic animals getting exposed to elevated levels of heavy metals, thus possessing harmful effects both to flora and fauna. The concentrations of Cd, Cr and Pb in water were found to be 0.051 ± 0.026, 1.091 ± 0.408, and 0.019 ± 0.002 whereas in the kidneys of Channa punctatus, as 0.076 ± 0.208, 0.482 ± 0.059, and 0.127 ± 0.705 respectively.

The present study aimed to analyze the biological effects induced by bioaccumulation of metals in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Effects of mineral nutrient imbalance, total antioxidants level and DNA damage induced by accumulation of heavy metals, were investigated in bean seedlings treated with two selected metal concentrations for 7 days. Metal content is analyzed by inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES), for total antioxidants level assessment the Ferric-Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay is used and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method was applied for investigation of DNA damages. The increasing metal concentration in the treatment medium changed synchronously metal content in samples, and decreased total antioxidant activity in all samples with exception only for samples treated with Ni and Cd. The obtained “DNA fingerprints” demonstrated that the increasing metal concentrations induced changes in RAPD profiles (disappearance and/or appearance of bands in comparison with untreated control samples). The highest number of missing bands was observed in samples treated with zinc (total 4 bands) and nickel (total 4 bands) at both concentrations. These results suggested that mineral nutrient imbalance is involved in changes of antioxidant levels and DNA damages of the seedlings, which may help to understand the mechanism of metal toxicity in plants.

Abstract

Sediments of a polluted reservoir were evaluated for total contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn along with their different geochemical forms (exchangeable, carbonate, Fe–Mn, organic matter and residual). Mineralogy of the sediments and physico-chemical parameters i.e. pH, OC and percentage of sand, silt and clay were also evaluated to see the dependency of heavy metals concentration on these parameters. The total concentration of heavy metals in the sediments varied according to sites and seasons. Except for station H1 which had moderately higher concentration of Cu (45.5 mg kg-1), concentrations of all other metals at all the sites under study were below the standard shale value. Maximum proportions of all metals were associated with the carbonate and residual fractions. The Risk Assessment Code showed a low risk for Cr, Ni and Zn, and a medium risk for Cu at station H3 and H4. On the basis of freshwater sediment quality guidelines, there is a strong possibility of Cr and Cu toxicity for aquatic biota of the reservoir. The data were further processed using Pearson’s correlation and factor analysis to obtain more accurate information about the behaviour of these metals. A positive relationship among the metals confirmed the anthropogenic sources of pollution in the reservoir. Significant positive relationships of heavy metals with the texture of the sediment were also obtained.

The present study aims to examine whether the seasonal changes in the levels of heavy metals Cd and Pb in the gills of sublittoral mussel Modiolus barbatus from populations distributed in Thermaikos Gulf are correlated to seasonal molecular (Heat Shock Response) and metabolic stress responses of this species. Our results indicate a season effect in the accumulation of heavy metals in the gills of bivalves in the area of Thermaikos Gulf, possibly implicating biological (reproductive cycle), natural (rivers' flow) and anthropogenic factors. Among the members of heat shock proteins (Hsps) examined, inducible Hsp70 seemed to play a major cytoprotective role against toxicity of metals. However, bivalves' tolerance against heavy metals may decrease during warming, arising further questions for their survival in context of global warming.

The binding of Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II) to protein components in serum, placenta, kidney, and urine was investigated at physiological pH, using radioisotopes as tracers. All the four metals were bound to albumin and other macromolecules in serum. However, small amounts were also bound to low molecular weight components of the size 1500–10000 daltons. The nature of the Cu(II)-binding to α-fetoprotein suggests its important role as the Cu(II)-transporting protein in fetal life. Metal binding to placental components were studied using both rat placenta and isolated human trophoblast cells. Studies of metal binding targets in kidney resulted in the isolation of a 4000 daltons acidic polypeptide which binds Ni(II) and Cd(II) with Kapp=1.1×10−5 and 2.3×10−5, respectively. Studies of metal binding substances in urine reveals the major amounts of these metals binding to substances of molecular weight 500–5000 daltons. Preliminary amino acid analysis suggests these components rich in acidic amino acids, similar to what has been found with kidney polypeptide. There may be a general role for such compounds in the handling of metals in the process of excretion.

In this study, we collected two sediment cores (C1 and C2) from the Andong tidal flat, Hangzhou Bay, and studied the temporal variations of heavy metals in the cores. Vertical distributions of heavy metals were almost unchanged in both the cores before 2000. After 2000, however, the heavy metal concentrations increased dramatically, suggesting that the sediments have been affected by enhanced human pollution in the recent decade. In the core C1, the sediments were severely polluted by Pb, moderately to considerably polluted by Cr and Zn, and low to moderately polluted by other heavy metals. The core C2 was relatively unpolluted before 2000 and low to moderately polluted after 2000. Multi-statistical analyses indicated that the core C1 was additionally contaminated by local human activities such as wastewater discharge and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. The heavy metals in the core C2, however, were largely contributed by the Yangtze River and controlled by sedimentation process. The calculated sedimentary flux (4–8 g m?2 a?1) of heavy metals generally increased with time. It was closely related to the wastewater discharge in adjacent areas. This study reconstructed the local heavy metal pollution history and provides important information for environmental protection and policy making.

The body composition of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) collected from drainage canals in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia and the concentration of four heavy metals; zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb) in both fish muscles and the water collected from this environment were assessed across the four seasons. The body composition was found to change with the seasons, with the best body composition being recorded in autumn and winter, where higher levels of protein (17.24, 17.65%), and fat (0.58, 0.71%) and lower water content (80.15, 79.86%) respectively were noted. The concentration of heavy metals in both fish muscles and the water body also varied significantly with the seasons. In the fish muscles, the highest content of Zn (0.409 mg/kg dry weight) and Cd (4.140 mg/kg dry weight) was recorded in winter, however, the highest concentration of Co (0.318 mg/kg dry weight) and Pb (1.96 mg/kg dry weight) was observed in spring and summer respectively. On the other hand, the water samples collected in autumn showed the maximum concentration of Cd (1.385 mg/L), Co (0.762 mg/L) and Pb (0.18 mg/L) however, the maximum concentration of Zn (0.0041 mg/L) was recorded in winter. With the exception of Cd, the accumulation of the studied heavy metals in fish muscles was within the safe limits for seafood recommended by various organizations.
