This paper introduces a modified technique based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) to improve the spectrum estimates of heart rate variability (HRV). In order to make the beat-to-beat (RR) interval be a function of time and produce an evenly sampled time series, we first adopt a preprocessing method to interpolate and resample the original RR interval. Then, the HHT, which is based on the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) approach to decompose the HRV signal into several monocomponent signals that become analytic signals by means of Hilbert transform, is proposed to extract the features of preprocessed time series and to characterize the dynamic behaviors of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system of heart. At last, the frequency behaviors of the Hilbert spectrum and Hilbert marginal spectrum (HMS) are studied to estimate the spectral traits of HRV signals. In this paper, two kinds of experiment data are used to compare our method with the conventional power spectral density (PSD) estimation. The analysis results of the simulated HRV series show that interpolation and resampling are basic requirements for HRV data processing, and HMS is superior to PSD estimation. On the other hand, in order to further prove the superiority of our approach, real HRV signals are collected from seven young health subjects under the condition that autonomic nervous system (ANS) is blocked by certain acute selective blocking drugs: atropine and metoprolol. The high-frequency power/total power ratio and low-frequency power/high-frequency power ratio indicate that compared with the Fourier spectrum based on principal dynamic mode, our method is more sensitive and effective to identify the low-frequency and high-frequency bands of HRV.  相似文献

Spectro-temporal receptive fields (STRFs) have been widely used as linear approximations to the signal transform from sound spectrograms to neural responses along the auditory pathway. Their dependence on statistical attributes of the stimuli, such as sound intensity, is usually explained by nonlinear mechanisms and models. Here, we apply an efficient coding principle which has been successfully used to understand receptive fields in early stages of visual processing, in order to provide a computational understanding of the STRFs. According to this principle, STRFs result from an optimal tradeoff between maximizing the sensory information the brain receives, and minimizing the cost of the neural activities required to represent and transmit this information. Both terms depend on the statistical properties of the sensory inputs and the noise that corrupts them. The STRFs should therefore depend on the input power spectrum and the signal-to-noise ratio, which is assumed to increase with input intensity. We analytically derive the optimal STRFs when signal and noise are approximated as Gaussians. Under the constraint that they should be spectro-temporally local, the STRFs are predicted to adapt from being band-pass to low-pass filters as the input intensity reduces, or the input correlation becomes longer range in sound frequency or time. These predictions qualitatively match physiological observations. Our prediction as to how the STRFs should be determined by the input power spectrum could readily be tested, since this spectrum depends on the stimulus ensemble. The potentials and limitations of the efficient coding principle are discussed.  相似文献

The mean frequency of the power spectrum of an electromyographic signal is an accepted index for monitoring fatigue in static contractions. There is however, indication that it may be a useful index even in dynamic contractions in which muscle length and/or force may vary. The objective of this investigation was to explore this possibility. An examination of the effects of amplitude modulation on modeled electromyographic signals revealed that changes in variance created in this way do not sufficiently affect characteristic frequency data to obscure a trend with fatigue. This validated the contention that not all non-stationarities in signals necessarily manifest in power spectral parameters. While an investigation of the nature and effects of non-stationarities in real electromyographic signals produced from dynamic contractions indicated that a more complex model is warranted, the results also indicated that averaging associated with estimating spectral parameters with the short-time Fourier transform can control the effects of the more complex non-stationarities. Finally, a fatigue test involving dynamic contractions at a force level under 30% of peak voluntary dynamic range, validated that it was possible to track fatigue in dynamic contractions using a traditional short-time Fourier transform methodology.  相似文献

Native ribonucleotide reductase from Escherichia coli exhibits a resonance-enhanced Raman mode at 1498 cm-1 that is characteristic of a tyrosyl radical. The Raman frequency as well as the absorption maximum at 410 nm identifies the radical as being in a deprotonated state. The B2 subunit of ribonucleotide reductase shows an additional resonance Raman mode at 493 cm-1 that has been assigned to the symmetric stretch of an Fe-O-Fe moiety. When samples of active B2 or metB2 are exposed to a tightly focused laser beam at 406.7 nm, there is a loss of intensity at 493 cm-1 and the appearance of a new peak at 595 cm-1. Although the 595-cm-1 feature was previously assigned to an Fe-OH vibration on the basis of its 23-cm-1 shift to lower energy in H2(18)O and the apparent dependence of its intensity on pH [Sj?berg, B. M., Loehr, T. M., & Sanders-Loehr, J. (1987) Biochemistry 26, 4242], the present studies indicate that the intensity of this mode is dependent primarily on input laser power. The peak at 595 cm-1 is more plausibly assigned to a new vs(Fe-O-Fe) mode in view of its lack of the deuterium isotope dependence expected for an Fe-OH mode and its resonant scattering cross section which is comparable to that of the 493-cm-1 mode. This new species has a calculated Fe-O-Fe angle of approximately 113 degrees compared to approximately 138 degrees calculated for the Fe-O-Fe unit in unmodified protein B2. One possible explanation for the photoinduced vibrational mode is that a bridging solvent molecule has been inserted in place of a bridging carboxylate.  相似文献

The present paper proposes the development of a new approach for automated diagnosis, based on classification of magnetic resonance (MR) human brain images. Wavelet transform based methods are a well-known tool for extracting frequency space information from non-stationary signals. In this paper, the proposed method employs an improved version of orthogonal discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for feature extraction, called Slantlet transform, which can especially be useful to provide improved time localization with simultaneous achievement of shorter supports for the filters. For each two-dimensional MR image, we have computed its intensity histogram and Slantlet transform has been applied on this histogram signal. Then a feature vector, for each image, is created by considering the magnitudes of Slantlet transform outputs corresponding to six spatial positions, chosen according to a specific logic. The features hence derived are used to train a neural network based binary classifier, which can automatically infer whether the image is that of a normal brain or a pathological brain, suffering from Alzheimer's disease. An excellent classification ratio of 100% could be achieved for a set of benchmark MR brain images, which was significantly better than the results reported in a very recent research work employing wavelet transform, neural networks and support vector machines.  相似文献

The comparison of electromyograms represents a challenge for data analysis. The aim of the project was to present a method that uses a minimal computational effort to resolve small but significant changes in the muscular activity that occur while walking with and without a knee brace. The wavelet transformed electromyograms were represented as intensity patterns that resolve the power of the signal in time and frequency. The intensity pattern of each electromyogram defines single points in a pattern space. The distance between these points in pattern space were used to detect and show the separation between the groups of electromyograms that were recorded while walking with and without a knee brace. The method proposes a distance versus angle representation to visually discriminate the intensity patterns. Once it has been shown that the differences are statistically significant, one can visualize the result in a difference intensity pattern that indicates at what time and at what frequency the electromyograms vary between the two conditions tested. It is to be expected that interventions that are more intrusive than a knee brace will reveal even more distinct differences.  相似文献

Cryogenic stabilization of myoglobin photoproducts   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The low frequency resonance Raman spectra of photodissociated carbon monoxymyoglobin at cryogenic temperatures (4-77 K) differ from those of deoxymyoglobin. Intensity differences occur in several low frequency porphyrin modes, and intensity and frequency differences occur in the iron-histidine stretching mode. This mode appears at about 225 cm-1 in deoxymyoglobin. At the lowest temperature studied, approximately 4 K, the frequency of the iron-histidine stretching mode in the photoproduct is approximately 233 cm-1, and the intensity is very low. When the temperature of the photoproduct is increased, the intensity of the mode increases, but its frequency is unchanged. The differences between the photoproduct and the deoxy preparation persist to 77 K, the highest temperature studied, and are independent of whether samples are frozen in phosphate buffer or a 50:50 ethylene glycol/phosphate buffer mixture. It is proposed that the frequency of the iron-histidine stretching mode is governed by the tilt angle of the histidine with respect to the normal to the heme plane, and the intensity of the mode is governed by the overlap between the sigma orbital of the iron-histidine bond and the pi orbital of the porphyrin macrocycle. This model can account for differences between the resonance Raman spectra of the photoproduct and the deoxy preparations of both hemoglobin and myoglobin. Furthermore, by considering the F-helix motions in going from 6-coordinate to 5-coordinate hemoglobin and myoglobin, the heme relaxation of these proteins at room temperature with 10-ns pulses can be explained. Based on the findings reported here, low temperature relaxation pathways for both hemoglobin and myoglobin are proposed.  相似文献

Efficient driving of piezoelectric materials is desirable when operating transducers for biomedical applications such as high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or ultrasound imaging. More efficient operation reduces the electric power required to produce the desired bioeffect or contrast. Our preliminary work [Cole et al. Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. 2014;26(13):135901.] suggested that driving transducers by applying orthogonal electric fields can significantly reduce the coercivity that opposes ferroelectric switching. We present here the experimental validation of this biaxial driving technique using piezoelectric ceramics typically used in HIFU. A set of narrow-band transducers was fabricated with two sets of electrodes placed in an orthogonal configuration (following the propagation and the lateral mode). The geometry of the ceramic was chosen to have a resonance frequency similar for the propagation and the lateral mode. The average (± s.d.) resonance frequency of the samples was 465.1 (± 1.5) kHz. Experiments were conducted in which each pair of electrodes was driven independently and measurements of effective acoustic power were obtained using the radiation force method. The efficiency (acoustic/electric power) of the biaxial driving method was compared to the results obtained when driving the ceramic using electrodes placed only in the pole direction. Our results indicate that the biaxial method increases efficiency from 50% to 125% relative to the using a single electric field.  相似文献

Resonance Raman vibrational spectra of the Pr and Pfr forms of oat phytochrome have been obtained at room temperature. When Pr is converted to Pfr, new bands appear in the C = C and C = N stretching region at 1622, 1599, and 1552 cm-1, indicating that a major structural change of the chromophore has occurred. The Pr to Pfr conversion results in an 11 cm-1 lowering of the N-H rocking band from 1323 to 1312 cm-1. Normal mode calculations correlate this frequency drop with a Z----E isomerization about the C15 = C16 bond. A line at 803 cm-1 in Pr is replaced by an unusually intense mode at 814 cm-1 in Pfr. Calculations on model tetrapyrrole chromophores suggest that these low-wavenumber modes are hydrogen out-of-plane (HOOP) wagging vibrations of the bridging C15 methine hydrogen and that both the intensity and frequency of the C15 HOOP mode are sensitive to the geometry around the C14-C15 and C15 = C16 bonds. The large intensity of the 814-cm-1 mode in Pfr indicates that the chromophore is highly distorted from planarity around the C15 methine bridge. If the Pr----Pfr conversion does involve a C15 = C16 Z----E isomerization, then the intensity of the C15 HOOP mode in Pfr argues that the chromophore has an E,anti conformation. On the basis of a comparison with the vibrational calculations, the low frequency (803 cm-1) and the reduced intensity of the C15 HOOP mode in Pr suggest that the chromophore in Pr adopts the C15-Z,syn conformation.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to test the stability of the heart rate (HR) power spectrum over time in conscious dogs. HR was recorded for 1 h for each of six animals on 2 days. A Fast Fourier transform was used to derive the HR power spectrum for the 12 contiguous 5-min epochs comprising the 1-h recordings. Changes in frequency and amplitude of the various spectral peaks were quantitatively examined. We confirm the presence of two major concentrations of power centered around 0.02 (low frequency peak) and 0.32 Hz (high frequency peak). However, we observed variations in these spectral peaks, especially their amplitudes, both within each hour and from day 1 to day 2. The amplitudes of these two spectral peaks tended to vary reciprocally. HR power spectra based on 5 min of recorded data were also derived from an additional eight animals in both the lying and standing positions; the power spectra from these short recordings were sufficiently sensitive to detect redistributions in power due to changes in posture in all eight dogs. We conclude that: 1) data should be recorded for relatively long periods (e.g., 1 h) to characterize the HR power spectrum; 2) some variability in frequency and amplitude will persist across spectra even when based on longer data bases; 3) care should be taken to ensure that the subject's behavioral state is stable within the recording period; 4) shorter (e.g., 5 min) data bases are not suitable except for detecting relatively robust changes in the HR power spectrum.  相似文献

Although event-related potentials (ERPs) are widely used to study sensory, perceptual and cognitive processes, it remains unknown whether they are phase-locked signals superimposed upon the ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG) or result from phase-alignment of the EEG. Previous attempts to discriminate between these hypotheses have been unsuccessful but here a new test is presented based on the prediction that ERPs generated by phase-alignment will be associated with event-related changes in frequency whereas evoked-ERPs will not. Using empirical mode decomposition (EMD), which allows measurement of narrow-band changes in the EEG without predefining frequency bands, evidence was found for transient frequency slowing in recognition memory ERPs but not in simulated data derived from the evoked model. Furthermore, the timing of phase-alignment was frequency dependent with the earliest alignment occurring at high frequencies. Based on these findings, the Firefly model was developed, which proposes that both evoked and induced power changes derive from frequency-dependent phase-alignment of the ongoing EEG. Simulated data derived from the Firefly model provided a close match with empirical data and the model was able to account for i) the shape and timing of ERPs at different scalp sites, ii) the event-related desynchronization in alpha and synchronization in theta, and iii) changes in the power density spectrum from the pre-stimulus baseline to the post-stimulus period. The Firefly Model, therefore, provides not only a unifying account of event-related changes in the EEG but also a possible mechanism for cross-frequency information processing.  相似文献

The effect of low power ultrasonic radiation on anaerobic biodegradability of sewage sludge was investigated. For this purpose, soluble substances and variation of microbial system of sewage sludge subjected to low power ultrasonic radiation were tested. The well known hydromechanical shear forces and heating effect of low frequency ultrasound plays a major role in the sludge pre treatment process. More, the increase of soluble substance may partly result from the destruction of microbial cell by excess ultrasonic pretreatment, which will inhibit the anaerobic process. By orthogonal tests, the optimal parameters were found to be an exposure time of 15 min, ultrasonic intensity of 0.35 W/cm2 and ultrasonic power density of 0.25 W/ml. Under the optimal condition, anaerobic biodegradability of sewage sludge (R(vss/ss) %) was increased by 67.6%. Consequently, it can be concluded that low power ultrasonic pretreatment is a valid method for improving anaerobic biodegradability of sewage sludge.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation is to introduce a wavelet analysis designed for analyzing short events reflecting bursts of muscle activity in non-stationary mechanomyographic (MMG) signals. A filter bank of eleven nonlinearly scaled wavelets that maintain the optimal combination of time and frequency resolution across the frequency range of MMG signals (5–100 Hz) was used for the analysis. A comparison with the short-time Fourier transform, Wigner-Ville transform and continuous wavelet transform using a test signal with known time–frequency characteristics showed that the MMG wavelet analysis resolved the intensity, timing, and frequencies of events in a more distinct way without overemphasizing high or low frequencies or generating interference terms. The analysis was used to process MMG signals from the vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus medialis muscles obtained during maximal concentric and eccentric isokinetic movements. Muscular events were observed that were precisely located in time and frequency in a muscle-specific way, thereby showing periods of synergistic contractions of the quadriceps muscles. The MMG wavelet spectra showed different spectral bands for concentric and eccentric isokinetic movements. In addition, the high and low frequency bands seemed to be activated independently during the isokinetic movement. What generates these bands is not yet known, however, the MMG wavelet analysis was able to resolve them, and is therefore applicable to non-stationary MMG signals.  相似文献

Generation of electron Bernstein waves by the ordinary-extraordinary-Bernstein (O-X-B) mode conversion process has been successfully demonstrated on W7-AS. According to Kirchoff’s law, the inverse process of plasma EC emission by B-X-O mode conversion at particular angles must take place in tokamak plasmas. The optical depth at electron cyclotron harmonics is generally very high for electron Bernstein waves in tokamak plasmas. Consequently the O-mode ECE spectrum measured below the plasma frequency will show steps in the emitted power when each EC harmonic coincides with the upper hybrid resonance zone, where the mode conversion occurs, giving a local measurement of the relationship between the total magnetic field and plasma density. In a spherical tokamak, there are several EC harmonics below the plasma frequency, so several such steps can be observed via the B-X-O mode conversion mechanism. This is a very promising way to get information about the q profile in ST plasmas.  相似文献

The power to detect linkage for likelihood and nonparametric (Haseman-Elston, affected-sib-pair, and affected-pedigree-member) methods is compared for the case of a common, dichotomous trait resulting from the segregation of two loci. Pedigree data for several two-locus epistatic and heterogeneity models have been simulated, with one of the loci linked to a marker locus. Replicate samples of 20 three-generation pedigrees (16 individuals/pedigree) were simulated and then ascertained for having at least 6 affected individuals. The power of linkage detection calculated under the correct two-locus model is only slightly higher than that under a single locus model with reduced penetrance. As expected, the nonparametric linkage methods have somewhat lower power than does the lod-score method, the difference depending on the mode of transmission of the linked locus. Thus, for many pedigree linkage studies, the lod-score method will have the best power. However, this conclusion depends on how many times the lod score will be calculated for a given marker. The Haseman-Elston method would likely be preferable to calculating lod scores under a large number of genetic models (i.e., varying both the mode of transmission and the penetrances), since such an analysis requires an increase in the critical value of the lod criterion. The power of the affected-pedigree-member method is lower than the other methods, which can be shown to be largely due to the fact that marker genotypes for unaffected individuals are not used.  相似文献

We have applied ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the excited state dynamics of the blue copper protein poplar plastocyanin, by exciting in the blue side of its 600-nm absorption band. The decay of the charge-transfer excited state occurs exponentially with a time constant of approximately 280 fs and is modulated by well visible oscillations. The Fourier transform of the oscillatory component, besides providing most of the vibrational modes found by conventional resonance Raman, presents additional bands in the low frequency region modes, which are reminiscent of collective motions of biological relevance. Notably, a high frequency mode at approximately 508 cm(-1), whose dynamics are consistent with that of the excited state and already observed for other blue copper proteins, is shown to be present also in poplar plastocyanin. This vibrational mode is reproduced by a molecular dynamics simulation involving the excited state of the copper site.  相似文献

Several authors have concluded that thermal electromagnetic noise will be of sufficient magnitude to overwhelm electric and/or magnetic fields induced by environmentally generated, power frequency electric and magnetic fields in the membranes of living cells located in the bodies of humans. Yet, there are research reports that indicate that living cells may respond to power frequency electric and/or magnetic field levels well below the limits set by these thermal noise arguments. The purpose of this study is to suggest that published thermal arguments may not make a full accounting of all membrane force fields of thermal origin, and that when such an accounting is made, the net thermal noise fields may be smaller in the power frequency range than previously thought. If this analysis is correct, there may be no thermal noise barrier that precludes the possibility of cellular membranes of human cells responding to environmental levels of power frequency electric or magnetic fields.  相似文献

It is hypothesized that a sensory neuron, a neuron issuing from a sensory receptor, encodes the rate at which entropy or uncertainty is removed at the receptor level. This hypothesis is tested for the case of the entropy associated with the magnitude of a signal (stimulus) applied at the sensory receptor. A simple mathematical model of the process is presented and a number of well-known stimulus-response relationships are seen to emerge. For example, the adaptation of a receptor may be seen to occur as a consequence of reduced uncertainty regarding stimulus intensity. A general equation relating stimulus and response is developed, and this equation will simplify, depending upon the ratio of signal power to noise power, to either a logarithmic or a power law.  相似文献

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectra have been recorded during the reaction of mixed valence (a3+ a2+(3)) cytochrome oxidase with dioxygen at room temperature. In the spectrum recorded at 10 microseconds subsequent to carbon monoxide photolysis, a mode is observed at 572 cm-1 that shifts to 548 cm-1 when the experiment is repeated with 18O2. The appearance of this mode is dependent upon the laser intensity used and disappears at higher incident energies. The high frequency data in conjunction with the mid-frequency data allow us to assign the 572 cm-1 mode to the Fe-O stretching vibration of the low-spin O2 adduct that forms in the mixed valence cytochrome oxidase/dioxygen reaction. The 572 cm-1 v(Fe2(+)-O2) frequency in the mixed valence enzyme/O2 adduct is essentially identical to the 571 cm-1 frequency we measured for this mode during the reduction of O2 by the fully reduced enzyme (Varotsis, C., Woodruff, W. H., and Babcock, G. T. (1989) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 111, 6439-6440; Varotsis, C., Woodruff, W. H., and Babcock, G. T. (1990) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 112, 1297), which indicates that the O2-bound cytochrome a3 site is independent of the redox state of the cytochrome a/CuA pair. The photolabile oxy intermediate is replaced by photostable low- or intermediate-spin cytochrome a3+(3), with t1/2 congruent to 200 microseconds.  相似文献
