Fresh market sweet corn (Zea mays L.) is a high sugar, high moisture vegetable that, due to its fast metabolic rate, is susceptible to rapid post-harvest decay at ambient temperatures. Immediate cooling and storage at low but not freezing temperatures are well established industry practices for maintaining post-harvest sugar content. Less is known about how post-harvest storage temperature impacts other important sweet corn consumer traits, such as aroma. In this study we measure the production and stability of the cooked sweet corn aroma compounds dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, 3-methyl furan, 3-methyl butanal and 2-methyl butanal. We reveal that these aroma compounds are also susceptible to post-harvest decay if sweet corn is stored at ambient rather than cool temperatures. Furthermore, the quantities and post-harvest decay rates of aroma volatiles vary among different sweet corn lines, indicating that sweet corn genetics can impact maintenance of post-harvest flavor.  相似文献

Plastic reflective mulches significantly reduced populations of corn leafhopper, Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott), adults and the incidence of corn stunt disease caused by Spiroplasma kunkelii (CSS) in late planted sweet corn (Zea mays L.). The reflective mulches were more effective than were either foliar or soil applied insecticides in managing both the leafhopper and the pathogen it transmits. Yields of marketable ears were 1.5 to 2 times greater in reflective mulch plots than from fallow plots. This was due to larger ears (individual ear weight and length) rather than an increase in the number of ears. The use of reflective mulches provides an alternative strategy to insecticides in the management of both D. maidis and corn stunt disease. Such a strategy may prove useful to growers in Latin America and to limited resource growers and organic growers in the United States who wish to grow corn without the use of insecticides.  相似文献

以甜玉米绿色超人和华甜01种子为试验材料,探讨Mn2+对种子萌发生理的影响。结果表明:经Mn2+处理后的两个品种甜玉米种子萌发生理指标存在明显的差异;Mn2+处理后,两品种的种子发芽率没有显著变化;绿色超人种子的发芽势和活力指数显著升高,但以1.00mmol/LMn2+处理的效果最佳;随处理浓度的升高,绿色超人和华甜01萌发种子脱氢酶的活性均呈上升的趋势;在适量的Mn2+作用下,两品种的POD、CAT活性均显著升高,萌发种子的MDA含量显著下降,1.00mmol/L的Mn2+处理对降低绿色超人种子MDA含量效果最佳;而处理后甜玉米种子的可溶性糖含量与对照差异均不显著,但不同甜玉米品种间具有较大的差异,这进一步说明锰的作用具有明显的基因型差异。  相似文献

A 40-fold purification of adenosine diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase from sweet corn (Zea mays var. Golden Beauty) revealed the enzyme to be specific for adenosine triphosphate. The enzyme has an absolute requirement for Mg2+ and is activated by 3-phosphoglycerate and to a lesser extent by ribose-5-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate. The apparent Km values of the enzyme for glucose-1-phosphate, adenosine triphosphate, pyrophosphate, and adenosine diphosphoglucose are 1.9 × 10−4, 3.2 × 10−5, 3.3 × 10−5, and 6.2 × 10−4m, respectively. Pyrophosphate inhibits adenosine diphosphoglucose synthesis competitively (Ki = 3.8 × 10−7m), while orthophosphate and sulfate appear to inhibit the reacion noncompetitively. These results show that the production of this sugar nucleotide can be controlled by the concentration of pyrophosphate.  相似文献

调查研究了玉米螟赤眼蜂Trichogramma ostriniae Pang et Chen在甜玉米地的年消长动态、日活动规律,以及对不同甜玉米品种和不同防治类型地亚洲玉米螟Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)卵的寄生率。玉米螟赤眼蜂田间扩散规律为:在苗期,按每点2000头的蜂量相距32m左右释放玉米螟赤眼蜂,即可达到50%以上的寄生率;在穗期,按每点2000头的蜂量相距24m左右释放玉米螟赤眼蜂,可达到80%以上的寄生率。  相似文献

Sweet corn is a widely distributed crop that generates agricultural waste without significant commercial value. In this study, we show that sweet corn varieties produce large amounts of residual biomass (10 t ha?1) with high content of soluble sugars (25% of dry matter) in a short growing season (3 months). The potential ethanol production from structural and soluble sugars extracted from sweet corn stover reached up to 4400 l ha?1 in the most productive hybrids, 33% of which (1500 l ha?1) were obtained by direct fermentation of free sugars. We found wide genetic variation for biomass yield and soluble sugars content suggesting that those traits can be included as complementary traits in sweet corn breeding programs. Dual‐purpose sweet corn hybrids can have an added value for the farmers contributing to energy generation without affecting food supply or the environment.  相似文献

Natural predation is an important component of integrated pest management that is often overlooked because it is difficult to quantify and perceived to be unreliable. To begin incorporating natural predation into sweet corn, Zea mays L., pest management, a predator survey was conducted and then three sampling methods were compared for their ability to accurately monitor the most abundant predators. A predator survey on sweet corn foliage in New York between 1999 and 2001 identified 13 species. Orius insidiosus (Say), Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer), and Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) were the most numerous predators in all years. To determine the best method for sampling adult and immature stages of these predators, comparisons were made among nondestructive field counts, destructive counts, and yellow sticky cards. Field counts were correlated with destructive counts for all populations, but field counts of small insects were biased. Sticky cards underrepresented immature populations. Yellow sticky cards were more attractive to C. maculata adults than H. axyridis adults, especially before pollen shed, making coccinellid population estimates based on sticky cards unreliable. Field counts were the most precise method for monitoring adult and immature stages of the three major predators. Future research on predicting predation of pests in sweet corn should be based on field counts of predators because these counts are accurate, have no associated supply costs, and can be made quickly.  相似文献

Survey of indigenous bacterial endophytes from cotton and sweet corn   总被引:35,自引:1,他引:34  
The genotypic diversity of indigenous bacterial endophytes within stems and roots of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) was determined in field trials throughout one growing season. Strains were isolated from surface-disinfested tissues and identified by fatty acid analysis. Gram-negative bacteria comprised 70.5% of the endophytic bacteria and 27 of the 36 genera identified. The most frequently isolated groups from sweet corn roots, were Burkholderia pickettii and Enterobacter spp.; from sweet corn stems, Bacillus megaterium. Bacterial genera present in sweet corn roots were also generally present in sweet corn stems. However, Burkholderia gladioli, Burkholderia solanacearum and Enterobacter cloacae were isolated much more frequently from sweet corn roots than stems, whereas Methylobacterium spp. were found more frequently in sweet corn stems than roots. Agrobacterium radiobacter, Serratia spp. and Burkholderia solanacearum, were the most frequently isolated groups from cotton roots; and Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus pumilus from cotton stems. Acinetobacter baumannii and Arthrobacter spp. were present in cotton stems but not in cotton roots. There were 14 taxonomic groups present in cotton roots that were not in cotton stems; all but one were Gram-negative. These included, Agrobacterium radiobacter, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus pumilus, Enterobacter asburiae, Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Serratia spp. and Staphylococcus spp. Rhizobium japonicum and Variovorax paradoxus were isolated, almost exclusively, from the roots of both crops. Bacterial taxa present in both sweet corn and cotton early in the season were generally present late in the season. The diversity of bacteria was greater in roots than stems for each crop.  相似文献

We compared the economics of controlling European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) in sweet corn by using the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma ostriniae, alone and integrated with insecticidal sprays. An initial experiment in 2003 compared T. ostriniae alone against insecticide alone and a second set of experiments conducted over 3 years (2006–2008) compared (1) insecticide alone [Insecticide]; (2) no insecticide, no T. ostriniae [Untreated Check]; (3) T. ostriniae alone [T. ostriniae 1X]; and (4) T. ostriniae + insecticide [Integrated]. In 2007 and 2008, a fifth treatment was added consisting of three approximately weekly releases of T. ostriniae [T. ostriniae 3X]. Parasitism of O. nubilalis eggs was higher in plots receiving T. ostriniae; O. nubilalis eclosion was lower with T. ostriniae; there was no interaction of T. ostriniae and insecticide on parasitism, O. nubilalis eclosion, or total O. nubilalis larvae at harvest time. Partial crop budgets were conducted for each treatment. In three of the 4 years, Untreated Checks had the highest sweet corn ear damage. Ear damage after a single release of T. ostriniae was statistically no different than using insecticides. In two of the three years, the Integrated treatment (T. ostriniae 1X + insecticide) generated the largest increase in profitability. The insecticide only treatment generated the second best increase in profitability. When comparing a single release of T. ostriniae to the insecticide only, the latter provided a better combination of efficacy and profitability. The breakeven costs of the T. ostriniae justified their use relative to the Untreated Check treatment, but not when compared to the Insecticide treatment. The breakeven costs for T. ostriniae in the Integrated treatment exceeded the actual cost in two out of three years, suggesting again that conventional growers could benefit from integrating T. ostriniae with insecticidal treatments. Projected profitability based on ear packout obtained by combining data among years suggests that in general, for low prices and yields, the increase in profit is quite modest. In the lowest price-yield combination, the change in profit is T. ostriniae 3X > Integrated > Insecticide > T. ostriniae 1X ? Untreated Check. At high prices and high yields, the differences between the management options when compared to Untreated Check are considerable. In the highest price-yield combination, the change in profit is T. ostriniae 3X > Integrated ? Insecticide > T. ostriniae 1X ? Untreated Check.  相似文献

利用自然种群生命表方法 ,研究了甜玉米品种抗虫性差异 ,斯氏线虫、玉米螟赤眼蜂对亚洲玉米螟种群系统的生态控制 ,根据不同卵量水平初步组建了第 5代亚洲玉米螟生态控制系统。结果得出 :亚洲玉米螟为害的生态控制系统由人工生态控制系统和自然控制系统两大部分组成 ,主要通过调控人工生态控制系统中的生态控制措施来达到生态控制目标。当甜玉米品种为穗甜 2号 ,卵密度为 18(块 / 10 0株 )时 ,不采取人为生态控制措施即可控制亚洲玉米螟的为害 ,即在人工生态控制系统内 ,利用穗甜 2号对亚洲玉米螟的抗性即可达到生态控制目标 ;当甜玉米品种为粤甜 1号 ,卵密度为 18或 35 (块 / 10 0株 )时 ,在人工生态控制系统内释放玉米螟赤眼蜂或撒施线虫颗粒剂均可达到生态控制目标 ;当甜玉米品种为粤甜 1号 ,卵密度为 6 2 (块 / 10 0株 )时 ,则要在人工生态控制系统内同时释放玉米螟赤眼蜂和撒施线虫颗粒剂 ,才能达到生态控制目标。通过生态控制系统的建立 ,为甜玉米的无公害化生产提供了一条切实可行的害虫控制途径  相似文献

A hybrid of sweet corn, Zea mays L. (`1720'; Rogers Brothers Seed Co.), was found to be comprised of glycinebetaine-positive and glycinebetaine-deficient individuals in a 1:1 mixture. This phenomenon was traced to segregation for a single, nuclear, dominant gene determining leaf glycinebetaine content within the female inbred parent of this hybrid. Selection for homozygous recessive (glycinebetaine-deficient) and homozygous dominant (glycinebetaine-positive) genotypes of the female inbred parent enabled production of two isogenic versions of hybrid `1720' differing with respect to a single copy of the dominant allele, by mating these female parent selections with the common homozygous recessive (glycinebetaine-deficient) male parent. These two isogenic hybrids are shown to differ by a factor of 300- to 400-fold in glycinebetaine titer of young expanding leaves of salinized plants, but exhibit no striking differences in the levels of free amino acids or the level of N-methylnicotinic acid (nicotinic acid betaine; trigonelline). The only significant difference between the two hybrids in terms of amino acid composition was found to be in the level of alanine under nonsalinized conditions. The betaine-deficient hybrid exhibited a 14% lower alanine level than the betaine-positive hybrid. Betaine deficiency was not associated with altered stress-induced accumulation of amino acids such as proline, serine, and asparagine plus aspartate, attesting to the high specificity of the genetic difference between these isogenic hybrids with respect to betaine accumulation. This germplasm offers unique opportunities to test whether a single dominant allele determining stress-induced betaine accumulation capacity influences stress resistance in maize.  相似文献
