Parameterization of the CO2 and H2O gas exchange of several temperate deciduous broad-leaved trees at the leaf scale considering seasonal changes

A combined model to simulate CO₂ and H₂O gas exchange at the leaf scale was parameterized using data obtained from in situ leaf‐scale observations of diurnal and seasonal changes in the CO₂ and H₂O gas exchange of four temperate deciduous broad‐leaved trees using a porometric method. The model consists of a Ball et al. type stomatal conductance submodel [Ball, Woodrow & Berry, pp. 221–224 in Progress in Photosynthesis Research (ed. I. Biggins), Martinus‐Nijhoff Publishers, Dordrecht, The Netherlands, 1987] and a Farquhar et al. type biochemical submodel of photosynthesis (Farquhar, von Caemmerer & Berry, Planta 149, 78–90, 1980). In these submodels, several parameters were optimized for each tree species as representative of the quantitative characteristics related to gas exchange. The results show that the seasonal physiological changes of V_cmax25 in the biochemical model of photosynthesis should be used to estimate the long‐term CO₂ gas exchange. For R_d25 in the biochemical model of photosynthesis and m in the Ball et al. type stomatal conductance model, the difference should be counted during the leaf expansion period.

Relationship between O2 evolution capacity and cytochrome b-559 high-potential form in Photosystem II particles

As previously shown for inside-out vesicles by Larsson et al. (Larsson, C., Jansson, C., Ljungberg, U.L., Åkerlund, H.E. and Anderson, B. (1984) in Advances in Photosynthesis Research, Vol. I, pp. 363–366 (Sybesma C., ed.), Martinus Nijhoff/Dr. W. Junk Publishers, Dordrecht, The Netherlands), we observed that NaCl 1 M washing of Photosystem II particles prepared by Triton X-100 treatment of spinach thylakoids induces both an inactivation of oxygen evolution and transformation of cytochrome b-559 from its high-potential to its low-potential form. A partial reactivation of water oxidation by 24 kDa polypeptide refixation is accompanied by a partial restoration of the cytochrome b-559 high-potential (HP) form. In contrast, reconstitution of water splitting by Ca²⁺ addition is not associated to a reestablishment of the cytochrome (HP) form. We conclude that cytochrome b-559 HP plays no role in water oxidation.

Modelling stomatal conductanceof field-grown sunflower under varying soil water content and leafenvironment: comparison of three models of stomatal response toleaf environment and coupling with an abscisic acid-based modelof stomatal response to soil drying

Stomatal conductance, g_s, responds both tothe immediate or local environment of the leaf, such as CO₂ partialpressure and irradiance, and to root‐sourced signals of water stress,particularly abscisic acid (ABA). Two models for the combined controlof g_s were formulated and tested in sunflower(Helianthus annuus). First, several empirical models weretested for the local control, demonstrating that the Ball–Berrymodel [Ball, Woodrow & Berry (in Progress in PhotosynthesisResearch Vol. 4, pp. 5.221–5.224: M. Nijhoff,Dordrecht, The Netherlands) 1987] is consistently amongthe most accurate. A problem of statistical non‐independence inthis model is shown to be minor. The model offers regularity ofparameter values among most species and, despite an oversimplicationin representing known humidity‐response mechanisms, it incorporates othersignalling loops from CO₂ and assimilation. In the firstcombined model, ABA as its concentration in xylem sap, [ABA]_xy,down‐regulates the slope, m, in the Ball–Berry modelby the factor g_fac = exp(– β[ABA]_xy).The ABA‐induced reduction in g_s decreases CO₂ assimilation andsurface humidity, thus appearing to induce the local‐control mechanismto amplify the ABA‐induced stomatal closure. In the second combinedmodel, g_s is estimated as the minimum of the local(Ball–Berry) response and the product g_fac g_s,max,with g_s,max as a maximal unstressed conductance.Both models can predict g_s from the external environmentalvariables with good accuracy (r² near 0·8 over20‐fold variations in g_s). Further analyses showthat g_s responds to humidity almost quadraticallyrather than linearly. It also responds to assimilation as a powerlaw with an exponent that is significantly less than 1. These limitations,shared by other models, suggest more research into biochemical signalling.
