The major threats to the health, productivity, and biodiversity of the marine environment result from human activities on land. National laws have failed to provide an adequate response. In conformity with the obligations contained in the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention, in recent years states have launched new legislative attempts that have as their stated objective to give more priority to protection of the marine ecosystem from land‐based activities. The 1995 Global Programme of Action as well as regional treaties and programs provide for a wide variety of alternative strategies, including monitoring, economic instruments, raising of awareness, and capability‐building that all as a matter or urgency need to be pursued. This article discusses what has become the dominant substantive strategy: development and imple‐mentation of best available techniques and best management practices. The article describes the rationale underlying the application of these approaches in international law and examines how recent treaties and action programs have incorporated them. The article concludes that in several respects the law is inadequate, but that the main problem is the lack of commitment of states to accept obligations to apply technology‐based standards or practices that are sufficiently responsive to the need for protection of the marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Biogeographic disjunction patterns, where multiple taxa are shared between isolated geographic areas, represent excellent systems for investigating the historical assembly of modern biotas and fundamental biological processes such as speciation, diversification, niche evolution, and evolutionary responses to climate change. Studies on plant genera disjunct across the northern hemisphere, particularly between eastern North America (ENA) and eastern Asia (EAS), have yielded tremendous insight on the geologic history and assembly of rich temperate floras. However, one of the most prevalent disjunction patterns involving ENA forests has been largely overlooked: that of taxa disjunct between ENA and cloud forests of Mesoamerica (MAM), with examples including Acer saccharum, Liquidambar styraciflua, Cercis canadensis, Fagus grandifolia, and Epifagus virginiana. Despite the remarkable nature of this disjunction pattern, which has been recognized for over 75 years, there have been few recent efforts to empirically examine its evolutionary and ecological origins. Here I synthesize previous systematic, paleobotanical, phylogenetic, and phylogeographic studies to establish what is known about this disjunction pattern to provide a roadmap for future research. I argue that this disjunction pattern, and the evolution and fossil record of the Mexican flora more broadly, represents a key missing piece in the broader puzzle of northern hemisphere biogeography. I also suggest that the ENA–MAM disjunction represents an excellent system for examining fundamental questions about how traits and life history strategies mediate plant evolutionary responses to climate change and for predicting how broadleaf temperate forests will respond to the ongoing climatic pressures of the Anthropocene.  相似文献

TNF-α and insulin resistance: Summary and future prospects   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
While the causes of obesity remain elusive, the relationship between obesity and insulin resistance is a well-established fact [1]. Insulin resistance is defined as a smaller than normal response to a certain dose of insulin, and contributes to several pathological problems of obese patients such as hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis and hypertension. Several pieces of evidence indicate that the cytokine tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-) is an important player in the state of insulin resistance observed during obesity. In this review we will try to summarize what is known about the function of TNF-a in insulin resistance during obesity and how TNF- interferes with insulin signaling.  相似文献

Environmental pollution has been on the rise in the past few decades owing to increased human activities on energy reservoirs, unsafe agricultural practices and rapid industrialization. Amongst the pollutants that are of environmental and public health concerns due to their toxicities are: heavy metals, nuclear wastes, pesticides, green house gases, and hydrocarbons. Remediation of polluted sites using microbial process (bioremediation) has proven effective and reliable due to its eco-friendly features. Bioremediation can either be carried out ex situ or in situ, depending on several factors, which include but not limited to cost, site characteristics, type and concentration of pollutants. Generally, ex situ techniques apparently are more expensive compared to in situ techniques as a result of additional cost attributable to excavation. However, cost of on-site installation of equipment, and inability to effectively visualize and control the subsurface of polluted sites are of major concerns when carrying out in situ bioremediation. Therefore, choosing appropriate bioremediation technique, which will effectively reduce pollutant concentrations to an innocuous state, is crucial for a successful bioremediation project. Furthermore, the two major approaches to enhance bioremediation are biostimulation and bioaugmentation provided that environmental factors, which determine the success of bioremediation, are maintained at optimal range. This review provides more insight into the two major bioremediation techniques, their principles, advantages, limitations and prospects.  相似文献

Natural monoterpenes have proved to be good starting materials for the synthesis of β-amino acid derivatives. In the past decade, a number of well-known synthetic procedures have been applied for the preparation of monoterpene-based β-amino acid derivatives, e.g. from β-lactams via the 1,2-dipolar cycloaddition of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate to commercial or readily available monoterpenes [e.g. (+)- and (−)-α- or δ-pinene, (+)-3- and 2-carene, (+)- and (−)-apopinene], the conjugate addition of amides to monoterpene-based α,β-unsaturated esters or the transformations of (−)-cis-pinonoic acid prepared by the oxidative cleavage of (+)- and (−)-verbenone. β-Amino acid derivatives are excellent building blocks for versatile transformations, e.g. multicomponent reactions resulting in β-lactams, syntheses of 1,3-heterocycles and diaminopyrimidine derivatives or the formation of peptides containing an H12 helix. 1,3-Amino alcohol derivatives prepared from β-amino esters have been applied as chiral catalysts in enantioselective transformations. Several of these compounds are of noteworthy pharmacological importance, such as tyrosine kinase Axl inhibitor diaminopyrimidine-coupled β-aminocarboxamides, MDR inhibitor thiourea derivatives of β-amino esters or 2-imino-1,3-oxazines, which exhibit marked growth inhibitory activity on multiple cancer cell lines. The present review summarizes recent developments relating to the syntheses, applications and pharmaceutical importance of monoterpene-based β-amino acids and their derivatives.  相似文献

The fundamental biological roles of a class of small noncoding RNAs (sncRNAs), derived from mature tRNAs or pre-tRNAs, in human diseases have received increasing attention in recent years. These ncRNAs are called tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) or tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs). tRFs mainly include tRF-1, tRF-5, tRF-3 and tRNA halves (tiRNAs or tRHs), which are produced by enzyme-specific cleavage of tRNAs. Here, we classify tRF-5 and 5′ tiRNAs into the same category: 5′-tRFs and review the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of 5′-tRFs in cancer and other diseases (metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, pathological stress injury and virus infection) to provide a new theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.  相似文献

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are two incurable diseases both hallmarked by an abnormal deposition of the amyloidogenic peptides Aβ and Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) in affected tissues. Epidemiological data demonstrate that patients suffering from diabetes are at high risk of developing AD, thus making the search for factors common to the two pathologies of special interest for the design of new therapies. Accumulating evidence suggests that the toxic properties of both Aβ or IAPP are ascribable to their ability to damage the cell membrane. However, the molecular details describing Aβ or IAPP interaction with membranes are poorly understood. This review focuses on biophysical and in silico studies addressing these topics. Effects of calcium, cholesterol and membrane lipid composition in driving aberrant Aβ or IAPP interaction with the membrane will be specifically considered. The cross correlation of all these factors appears to be a key issue not only to shed light in the countless and often controversial reports relative to this area but also to gain valuable insights into the central events leading to membrane damage caused by amyloidogenic peptides. We introduce nutrient recycling into a model where competitors differ in the scale at which they perceive their environment. In a two-resource system with both external nutrient inputs and recycling, larger consumers ("integrators") often generate resource distributions that favor their smaller ("nonintegrator") competitors, and vice versa. This occurs because recycling of integrator biomass reduces between-patch resource heterogeneity, whereas recycling of nonintegrator biomass does not. Combined, recycling and throughput can allow coexistence when it is not possible with either alone. With recycling, the presence of an integrator also may facilitate higher biomass of a co-occurring nonintegrator. Our model provides a context where recycling can generate negative feedback between competitors that differ in size and so promote coexistence. This is opposite to the positive recycling-mediated feedback commonly expected on the basis of litter chemistry differences between competitors. Effects of recycling and homogenization on nonintegrators may also be negative in our model, depending on the conformation of the system's resource supply points and the species' relative resource requirements. Our model suggests that the effects of plant size on competitive outcomes may depend critically on the degree of resource recycling found in the system and, reciprocally, that the effects of recycling may depend on plant size.  相似文献

Marine ascidians are considered as one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds. The extraction and utilization of marine peptides have been attracted much attention owing to their potential health benefits. Most of the bioactive compounds from marine ascidians are already in different phases of the clinical and preclinical pipeline. They can be used in different functional and nutraceutical values due to their antineoplastic, antihypertensive, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The screening in vivo and in vitro bioassays are coupled to the purification process for the exploration of its biological interest which is of great value. The growing significance to study marine natural products results from the discovery of novel pharmacological tools including potent anticancer drugs and other drugs are in clinical/pre-clinical trials. The present review highlights the recent research progress in marine ascidians’ peptides and its prospects for the future pharmaceutical development.  相似文献

There is now clear evidence that microorganisms present biogeographic patterns, yet the processes that create and maintain them are still not well understood. In particular, the contribution of dispersal and its exact impact on local community composition is still unclear. For example, dispersing cells may not thrive in recipient environments, but may still remain part of the local species pool. Here, we experimentally tested if marine bacteria can be retrieved from freshwater communities (pelagic and sediment) and the atmosphere by exposing bacteria from three lakes, that differ in their proximity to the Norwegian Sea, to marine conditions. We found that the percentage of freshwater taxa decreased with increasing salinities, whereas marine taxa increased along the same gradient. Our results further showed that this increase was stronger for lake and sediment compared with air communities. Further, significant increases in the average niche breadth of taxa were found for all sources, and in particular lake water and sediment communities, at higher salinities. Our results therefore suggests that marine taxa can readily grow from freshwater sources, but that the response was likely driven by the growth of habitat generalists that are typically found in marine systems. Finally, there was a greater proportion of marine taxa found in communities originating from the lake closest to the Norwegian Sea. In summary, this study shows that the interplay between bacterial dispersal limitation and dispersal from internal and external sources may have an important role for community recovery in response to environmental change.  相似文献

Marine ecosystems are experiencing rapid and pervasive changes in biodiversity and species composition. Understanding the ecosystem consequences of these changes is critical to effectively managing these systems. Over the last several years, numerous experimental manipulations of species richness have been performed, yet existing quantitative syntheses have focused on a just a subset of processes measured in experiments and, as such, have not summarized the full data available from marine systems. Here, we present the results of a meta‐analysis of 110 marine experiments from 42 studies that manipulated the species richness of organisms across a range of taxa and trophic levels and analysed the consequences for various ecosystem processes (categorised as production, consumption or biogeochemical fluxes). Our results show that, generally, mixtures of species tend to enhance levels of ecosystem function relative to the average component species in monoculture, but have no effect or a negative effect on functioning relative to the ‘highest‐ performing’ species. These results are largely consistent with those from other syntheses, and extend conclusions to ecological functions that are commonly measured in the marine realm (e.g. nutrient release from sediment bioturbation). For experiments that manipulated three or more levels of richness, we attempted to discern the functional form of the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationship. We found that, for response variables related to consumption, a power‐function best described the relationship, which is also consistent with previous findings. However, we identified a linear relationship between richness and production. Combined, our results suggest that changes in the number of species will, on average, tend to alter the functioning of marine ecosystems. We outline several research frontiers that will allow us to more fully understand how, why, and when diversity may drive the functioning of marine ecosystems. Synthesis The oceans host an incredible number and variety of species. However, human activities are driving rapid changes in the marine environment. It is imperative we understand ecosystem consequences of any associated loss of species. We summarized data from 110 experiments that manipulated species diversity and evaluated resulting changes to a range of ecosystem responses. We show that losing species, on average, decreases productivity, growth, and a myriad of other processes related to how marine organisms capture and utilize resources. Finally, we suggest that the loss of species may have stronger consequences for some processes than others.  相似文献

16S rRNA gene-based molecular analyses revealed the presence of several large and so far uncultivated clades within class γ-Proteobacteria, designated γ-proteobacterial marine sediment (GMS) clades 1 to 4, in marine sediment. The GMS clades appear only indigenous to marine sediment and so far have an unknown functionality. SYBR Green–based real-time PCR analyses using GMS clade-specific primers indicated GMS clades were a significant part of the bacterial community (0.3–8.7% of total 16S rRNA genes) in both polar and temperate marine sediment samples. Univariate statistical analyses indicated that GMS clade communities were indistinguishable in two temperate coastal sediment samples even though these possessed very different mean grain sizes, organic contents, and organic loading rates. GMS clade communities were slightly different (p < 0.05) between polar and temperate sites, suggesting that psychrophilic adaptation among GMS clade taxa corresponds only to subtle phylogenetic differences. Similar levels of difference were also observed through a sediment core reflecting that through the sediment core history, which spanned ∼3000 years, GMS clonal diversity shifted only marginally.  相似文献

Marine chemical ecology: what''s known and what''s next?   总被引:24,自引:0,他引:24
In this review, I summarize recent developments in marine chemical ecology and suggest additional studies that should be especially productive. Direct tests in both the field and laboratory show that secondary metabolites commonly function as defenses against consumers. However, some metabolites also diminish fouling, inhibit competitors or microbial pathogens, and serve as gamete attractants; these alternative functions are less thoroughly investigated. We know little about how consumers perceive secondary metabolites or how ecologically realistic doses of defensive metabolites affect consumer physiology or fitness, as opposed to feeding behavior. Secondary metabolites have direct consequences, but they do not act in isolation from other prey characteristics or from the physical and biological environment in which organisms interact with their natural enemies. This mandates that marine chemical ecology be better integrated into a broader and more complex framework that includes aspects of physiological, population, community, and even ecosystem ecology. Recent advances in this area involve assessing how chemically mediated interactions are affected by physical factors such as flow, desiccation, UV radiation, and nutrient availability, or by biological forces such as the palatability or defenses of neighbors, fouling organisms, or microbial symbionts. Chemical defenses can vary dramatically among geographic regions, habitats, individuals within a local habitat, and within different portions of the same individual. Factors affecting this variance are poorly known, but include physical stresses and induction due to previous attack. Studies are needed to assess which consumers induce prey defenses, how responses vary in environments with differing physical characteristics, and whether the ‘induced’ responses are a direct response to consumer attack or are a defense against microbial pathogens invading via feeding wounds. Although relatively unstudied, ontogenetic shifts in concentrations and types of defenses occur in marine species, and patterns of larval chemical defenses appear to provide insights into the evolution of complex life cycles and of differing modes of development among marine invertebrates. The chemical ecology of marine microbes is vastly underappreciated even though microbes produce metabolites that can have devastating indirect effects on non-target organisms (e.g., red tide related fish kills) and significantly affect entire ecosystems. The natural functions of these metabolites are poorly understood, but they appear to deter both consumers and other microbes. Additionally, marine macro-organisms use metabolites from microbial symbionts to deter consumers, subdue prey, and defend their embryos from pathogens. Microbial chemical ecology offers unlimited possibilities for investigators that develop rigorous and more ecologically relevant approaches.  相似文献

Potassium translocation in plants is accomplished by a large variety of transport systems. Most of the available molecular information on these proteins concerns voltage-gated potassium channels (Kv channels). The Arabidopsis genome comprises nine genes encoding α-subunits of Kv channels. Based on knowledge of their animal homologues, and on biochemical investigations, it is broadly admitted that four such polypeptides must assemble to yield a functional Kv channel. The intrinsic functional properties of Kv channel α-subunits have been described by expressing them in suitable heterologous contexts where homo-tetrameric channels could be characterized. However, due to the high similarity of both the polypeptidic sequence and the structural scheme of Kv channel α-subunits, formation of heteromeric Kv channels by at least two types of α-subunits is conceivable. Several examples of such heteromeric plant Kv channels have been studied in heterologous expression systems and evidence that heteromerization actually occurs in planta has now been published. It is therefore challenging to uncover the physiological role of this heteromerization. Fine tuning of Kv channels by heteromerisation could be relevant not only to potassium transport but also to electrical signaling within the plant.Key words: heteromerization, voltage-gated channels, membrane potential  相似文献

Drastic declines in insect populations, ‘Ecological Armageddon’, have recently gained increased attention in the scientific community, and are commonly considered to be the consequence of large‐scale factors such as land‐use changes, use of pesticides, climate change and habitat fragmentation. Artificial light at night (ALAN), a pervasive global change that strongly impacts insects, remains, however, infrequently recognised as a potential contributor to the observed declines. Here, we provide a summary of recent evidence of impacts of ALAN on insects and discuss how these impacts can drive declines in insect populations in light‐polluted areas. ALAN can increase overall environmental pressure on insect populations, and this is particularly important in agroecosystems where insect communities provide important ecosystem services (such as natural pest control, pollination, conservation of soil structure and fertility and nutrient cycling), and are already under considerable environmental pressure. We discuss how changes in insect populations driven by ALAN and ALAN itself may hinder these services to influence crop production and biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Understanding the contribution of ALAN and other factors to the decline of insects is an important step towards mitigation and the recovery of the insect fauna in our landscapes. In future studies, the role of increased nocturnal illumination also needs to be examined as a possible causal factor of insect declines in the ongoing ‘Ecological Armageddon’, along with the more commonly examined factors. Given the large scale of agricultural land use and the potential of ALAN to indirectly and directly impact crop production and biodiversity, a better understanding of effects of ALAN in agroecosystems is urgently needed.  相似文献
