To fully understand human language, an evolved trait that develops in the young without formal instruction, it must be possible to observe language that has not been influenced by instruction. But in modern societies, much of the language that is used, and most of the language that is measured, is confounded by literacy and academic training. This diverts empirical attention from natural habits of speech, causing theorists to miss critical features of linguistic practice. To dramatize this point, I examine data from a special population––the canal boat children of early twentieth century England––whose language developed without academic influence, but was evaluated using instruments designed primarily for academic use. These data, taken together with related research, suggest that formal instruction can convert language from a purely biological trait that was selected, to a talent that was instructed, while altering the users of language themselves. I then review research indicating that formal instruction can also mask or distort inter-sexual differences in the social applications of language, a significant handicap to evolutionary theorizing. I conclude that if biological theories of language are to succeed, they must explain the spontaneous speaking practices of naturally behaving individuals.

Evidence that the motor and the linguistic systems share common syntactic representations would open new perspectives on language evolution. Here, crossing disciplinary boundaries, we explore potential parallels between the structure of simple actions and that of sentences. First, examining Typically Developing (TD) children displacing a bottle with or without knowledge of its weight prior to movement onset, we provide kinematic evidence that the sub-phases of this displacing action (reaching + moving the bottle) manifest a structure akin to linguistic embedded dependencies. Then, using the same motor task, we reveal that children suffering from specific language impairment (SLI), whose core deficit affects syntactic embedding and dependencies, manifest specific structural motor anomalies parallel to their linguistic deficits. In contrast to TD children, SLI children performed the displacing-action as if its sub-phases were juxtaposed rather than embedded. The specificity of SLI’s structural motor deficit was confirmed by testing an additional control group: Fragile-X Syndrome patients, whose language capacity, though delayed, comparatively spares embedded dependencies, displayed slower but structurally normal motor performances. By identifying the presence of structural representations and dependency computations in the motor system and by showing their selective deficit in SLI patients, these findings point to a potential motor origin for language syntax.  相似文献

American anthropology is distinguished by a four-fields approach in which biological, cultural, archaeological, and linguistic dimensions of behavior are examined in evolutionary and cross-cultural perspective. Nevertheless, assumptions of mind-body dualism pervade scholarly thinking in anthropology and have prevented the development of a truly integrated science of human experience. This dualism is most exemplified by the lack of consideration of the role of the brain in both “physical” and “mental” processes, including phenomena labeled as cultural. In this paper, I review neural mechanisms of learning, communication, and emotion, and discuss the implications of these findings for culture theory. In order to identify an optimal aeration strategy for intensifying bio-fuel ethanol production in fermentation processes where growth and production have to be managed simultaneously, we quantified the effect of aeration conditions—oxygen limited vs non limited culture (micro-aerobic vs aerobic culture)—on the dynamic behaviour of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultivated in very high ethanol performance fed-batch cultures. Fermentation parameters and kinetics were established within a range of ethanol concentrations (up to 147 g l–1), which very few studies have addressed. Higher ethanol titres (147 vs 131 g l–1 in 45 h) and average productivity (3.3 vs 2.6 g l–1 h–1) were obtained in cultures without oxygen limitation. Compared to micro-aerobic culture, full aeration led to a 23% increase in the viable cell mass as a result of the concomitant increase in growth rate and yield, with lower ethanol inhibition. The second beneficial effect of aeration was better management of by-product production, with production of glycerol, the main by-product, being strongly reduced from 12 to 4 g l–1. We demonstrate that aeration strategy is as much a determining factor as vitamin feeding (Alfenore et al. 2002) in very high ethanol performance (147 g l–1 in 45 h) in order to achieve a highly competitive dynamic process.  相似文献

In 1967, American biologist Adrian Wenner (1928–) launched an extensive challenge to Karl von Frisch’s (1886–1982) theory that bees communicate to each other the direction and distance of food sources by a symbolic dance language. Wenner and various collaborators argued that bees locate foods solely by odors. Although the dispute had largely run its course by 1973 – von Frisch was awarded a Nobel Prize, while Wenner withdrew from active bee research – it offers us a rare window into mid-twentieth century discussions about animals, language, and cognition. Historians, sociologists, and scientists have commented on the debate and its outcome, but none has seriously questioned why von Frisch and Wenner pursued such different explanations of the bees’ dances. In this paper, I explore von Frisch and Wenner’s differing visions of animals and their behaviors and show how these contributed to their respective positions. Von Frisch’s early-twentieth-century training in experimental physiology disposed him to focus on individual animals, their abilities, and their behaviors’ evolutionary significance. Wenner, by contrast, was trained in mathematics and statistics and the Schneirla school of behavior. He viewed the bees’ behaviors probabilistically with an eye toward the entire hive and its surroundings and ultimately explained them in terms of simple stimulus–response conditioning. Finally, while the debate was resolved in von Frisch’s favor, he neither waged nor won the battle by himself. Instead, I show that practitioners, whose agendas ranged from the nascent fields of sociobiology to cognitive ethology, took up the cause of the communicating bees. IVS10nt546 (IVS10nt-11g→a) is the most common molecular defect of the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene causing phenylketonuria in Mediterranean populations. Previous studies have proposed various and alternative hypotheses concerning the geographical origin and pattern of diffusion of this mutation in this area. In this study, this issue was re-examined on a large sample (149) of “Mediterranean” IVS10nt546 mutant alleles analysed with multiallelic intragenic polymorphisms. The analysis of intragenic microsatellite (STR) and minisatellite (VNTR) polymorphisms shows allelic heterogeneity of the IVS10nt546 mutation. Eight STR and three VNTR alleles were found in association with the splicing defect. Of the ten detected STR–VNTR combinations (“minihaplotypes”), we identified a predominant allelic association (VNTR7 – STR252) embedded in a RFLP-haplotype 6 background, which seems to correspond to the ancestral gene originating in the Turkey–Israel area. Analysis of both absolute and relative gene frequencies of the STR252 – IVS10nt546 – VNTR7 minihaplotypes, shows statistically significant (P < 0.02) variations and may suggest gene flow from Turkey and/or Israel to Italy and Spain. The associated migratory events need not be unique in time (and people) but seem to suggest they may be traced back to the expansion of the Neolithic culture and people, thus allowing dating of the origin of this mutation to at least 5000–10 000 years ago. Alternative hypotheses are discussed to explain, in light of the available historical and pre-historical evidence, the pattern of diffusion of the IVS10nt546 mutation in the Mediterranean basin. Many theories on origin of life at the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth, generally use conceptions of life instead of explicit definitions of life. This paper presents ideas on the origin of life as studied by Buffon (1707–1788), Lamarck (1744–1829), Darwin (1809–1882), Huxley (1825–1895), Oparin (1894–1980) and Haldane (1892–1964). We show that their conceptions on the evolution of matter and life reveal their conceptions of life rather than their definitions of life.  相似文献

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is an intermediate filament protein considered to be the best astroglial marker. However, the predominant cell population in adult human brain tissue cultures does not express GFAP; these cells have been termed “glia-like” cells. The basic question about histological origin of adult human brain cultures remains unanswered. Some authors showed that “glia-like” cells in adult human brain cultures might be of non-glial origin. We examined primary explant tissue cultures derived from 70 adult human brain biopsies. Within first 5–10 days approximately 5–10% of the small explants became attached. Outgrowing cells were mostly flat cells. These cells formed confluent layer over 3–6 weeks in culture. At confluence the cultures contained 2–5% of microglial cells, 0.1% GFAP-positive astrocytes, less than 0.01% oligodendrocytes and 95–98% GFAP-negative “glia-like” cells. This population of flat “glia-like” cells was positively stained for vimentin, fibronectin, and 20–30% of these cells stained for nestin. Our findings revealed that 1 mM dibutyryl-cAMP addition, in serum free conditions, induced a reversible stellation in 5-10% of the flat “glia-like” cells but did not induce the expression of GFAP or nestin in morphologically changed stellate cells. These results demonstrate that “glia-like” cells in primary adult human brain cultures constitute heterogeneous cell populations albeit with similar morphological features. Two distinct subpopulations have been shown: (i) the one immunostained for nestin; and (ii) the other reactive for dibutyryl-cAMP treatment.  相似文献

Summary In oak species, there is paucity of information on the anatomical changes underlying differentiation of somatic embryos from explants of mature trees. A histological study was undertaken to ascertain the cellular origin and ontogenesis of somatic embryos in leaf cultures from a 100-yr-old Quercus robur tree. Somatic embryogenesis was induced in expanding leaves excised from shoots forced from branch segments, following culture on three successive media containing different concentrations of α-naphthaleneacetic acid and 6-benzylaminopurine. The somatic embryogenesis followed an indirect pathway from a callus tissue formed in the leaf lamina. After 4–6 wk of culture, meristematic cells originated in superficial layers of callus protuberances, but these cells evolved into differentiated vacuolated cells rather than embryos. A subsequent dedifferentiation into embryogenic cells occurred later (9–12 wk of culture) within a dissociating callus. Embryogenic cells exhibited dense protein-rich protoplasm, high nucleoplasmic ratio, and contained small starch grains. Successive divisions of these cells led to the formation of a few-celled proembryos and embryogenic cell clumps within a thick common cell wall, which seemed to have originated unicellularly. However, a multicellular origin of larger embryogenic clumps could not be dismissed; these gave rise to embryonic nodular structures that developed somatic embryos of both uni- and multicellular origin. Somatic embryos at successive stages of development, including cotyledonary-stage embryos with shoot and root meristems, were apparent.  相似文献

Young Xenopus tadpoles were used to test whether the pattern of discharge in specific sensory neurons can determine the motor response of a whole animal. Young Xenopus tadpoles show two main rhythmic behaviours: swimming and struggling. Touch-sensitive skin sensory neurons in the spinal cord of immobilised tadpoles were penetrated singly or in pairs using microelectrodes to allow precise control of their firing patterns. A single impulse in one Rohon-Beard neuron (= light touch) could sometimes trigger “fictive” swimming. Two to six impulses at 30–50 Hz (= a light stroke) reliably triggered fictive swimming. Neither stimulus evoked fictive struggling. Twenty-five or more impulses at 30–50 Hz (= pressure) could evoke a pattern of rhythmic bursts, distinct from swimming and suitable to drive slower, stronger movements. This pattern showed some or all the characteristics of “fictive” struggling. These results demonstrate clearly that sensory neurons can determine the pattern of motor output simply by their pattern of discharge. Summary Escherichia coli cells taken from exponential and late stationary (or decline) phases of culture were very susceptible to lysis by EDTA/lysozyme. Log phase cells were most susceptible to lysis by polymyxin/lysozyme. Treatment ofE. coli with EDTA and lysozyme compared favourably with sonication as a method for release of intracellular protein. Concentration ranges for optimal lysis were 100–800 μg/ml for EDTA and 25–50 μg/ml for lysozyme.  相似文献

Patients with classic galactosemia, an inborn error of metabolism, have speech and language production impairments. Past research primarily focused on speech (motor) problems, but these cannot solely explain the language impairments. Which specific deficits contribute to the impairments in language production is not yet known. Deficits in semantic and syntactic planning are plausible and require further investigation. In the present study, we examined syntactic encoding while patients and matched controls overtly described scenes of moving objects using either separate words (minimal syntactic planning) or sentences (sentence-level syntactic planning). The design of the paradigm also allowed tapping into local noun phrase- and more global sentence-level syntactic planning. Simultaneously, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs). The patients needed more time to prepare and finish the utterances and made more errors. The patient ERPs had a very similar morphology to that of healthy controls, indicating overall comparable neural processing. Most importantly, the ERPs diverged from those of controls in several functionally informative time windows, ranging from very early (90–150 ms post scene onset) to relatively late (1820–2020 ms post scene onset). These time windows can be associated with different linguistic encoding stages. The ERP results form the first neuroscientific evidence for language production impairments in patients with galactosemia in lexical and syntactic planning stages, i.e., prior to the linguistic output phase. These findings hence shed new light on the language impairments in this disease.  相似文献

Twenty-two strains ofLemna paucicostata collected from various districts in Japan are classified into 4 types having different morphological features and photoperiodic behaviors. (I) The “N-1” type, widely distributed in north and middle Japan, consists of many short-day strains with similar morphological characteristics. The strain of northern origin, however, has a shorter critical dark period than that of southern origin, and most of the strains flower in response to a single short day though some from middle Japan require 2 short days. (2) The “N-2” type, found in a limited area of northern Japan, is also a short-day type, but has very long critical dark periods and requires 3–5 short-day cycles for flowering. (3) The “S” type, distributed in southern Japan, never flowered in any photoperiod or culture conditions tested. (4) The “K” type, strain 351, collected at the experimental farm of Kyoto University, is a day-neutral type and flowers independently of photoperiod. Application of some SH inhibitors, tungstate or EDTA, or exposure to blue, far-red or low-intensity light caused daylength-independent flowering in short-day strain 6746 (California origin), but none of these treatments caused flowering in any short-day strain collected in Japan.  相似文献

 Spike discharges of skeletomotor neurons innervating triceps surae muscles elicited by white noise modulated transmembrane current stimulation and muscle stretch were studied in decerebrated cats. The white noise modulated current intensity ranged from 4.3 to 63.2 nA peak-to-peak, while muscle stretches ranged from 100 μm to 4.26 mm peak-to-peak. The neuronal responses were studied by averaging the muscle length records centered at the skeletomotor action potentials (peri-spike average, PSA) and by Wiener analysis. Skeletomotor spikes appeared after a sharp peak in PSA of the injected current, preceded by a longer-lasting smaller wavelet of either depolarizing or hyperpolarizing direction. The PSA amplitude was not related to the injected current amplitude nor showed any differences related to the motor unit type. The PSA amplitudes were virtually independent of the stretching amplitude σ, after an initial increase with stretching amplitudes in the range of 15–40 μm (S.D.), or 100–270 μm peak-to-peak.Analyses of cross-spectra indicated a small or absent increase in gain with frequency in response to injected current, but about 20 dB/decade in the range 10–100 Hz in response to muscle stretch. The peaks of both Wiener kernels in response to current injection appear to decrease with the amplitude of injected current, but this decrease was not statistically significant. The narrow first-order kernels suggest that the transfer function between the current input and spike discharge is lowpass with a wide passband, i.e. there is very little change in dynamics. The values of the second-order kernels appear to be nonzero only along the main diagonal. This is characteristic of a simple Hammerstein type cascade, i.e. a zero memory nonlinearity followed by a linear system. Small values of second-order kernels away from the origin and narrow first-order kernels suggest that the linear cascade contributes very little to the overall dynamic response.In contrast to Wiener kernels found in response to current injection, the Wiener kernels in response to stretch showed a decreasing trend with stretch amplitude. The size of the second-order kernels decreased to a somewhat larger extent with input amplitude than that of the first-order kernels, indicating an amplitude-dependent nonlinearity. Historians of science have only just begun to sample the wealth of different approaches to the study of animal behavior undertaken in the twentieth century. To date, more attention has been given to Lorenzian ethology and American behaviorism than to other work and traditions, but different approaches are equally worthy of the historian’s attention, reflecting not only the broader range of questions that could be asked about animal behavior and the “animal mind” but also the different contexts in which these questions were important. One such approach is that represented by the work of the French zoologist Louis Boutan (1859–1934). This paper explores the intellectual and cultural history of Boutan’s work on animal language and the animal mind, and contextualizes the place of animal behavior studies within late-nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century French biology. I explore the ways in which Boutan addressed the philosophical issue of whether language was necessary for abstract thought and show how he shifted from the idea that animals were endowed with a purely affective language to the notion that of they were capable of “rudimentary” reasoning. I argue that the scientific and broader socio-cultural contexts in which Boutan operated played a role in this transition. Then I show how Boutan’s linguistic and psychological experiments with a gibbon and children provide insights into his conception of “naturalness.” Although Boutan reared his gibbon at home and studied it in the controlled environment of his laboratory, he continued to identify its behavior as “natural.” I specifically demonstrate the importance of the milieu of the French Third Republic in shaping Boutan’s understanding not only of animal intelligence and child education, but also his definition of nature. Finally, I argue that Boutan’s studies on the primate mind provide us with a lens through which we can examine the co-invention of animal and child psychology in early-twentieth-century France.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to describe the histological events that led to somatic embryogenesis in macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Martius). Zygotic embryos were inoculated on Y3 medium containing 9 μM 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolonic acid (picloram). Somatic embryos regenerated from nodular callus on induction medium with activated charcoal under photoperiod or without activated charcoal under dark. Many proembryos originated from the fundamental meristem after 10–20 days of culture. When transferred to medium containing activated charcoal, under photoperiod, calli regenerated into somatic embryos of unicellular origin. These embryos had protoderm, plumule and procambial strands and some of them could germinate. After 30–40 days of culture, meristematic masses grew from procambial cells. The masses generated nodular callus, and after transfer to medium without activated charcoal, under dark, they generated somatic embryos of multicellular origin. Xylanase production by the Antarctic psychrophilic yeast Cryptococcus adeliae was increased 4.3 fold by optimizing the culture medium composition using statistical designs. The optimized medium containing 24.2 g l−1 xylan and 10.2 g l−1 yeast extract and having an initial pH of 7.5 yielded xylanase activity at 400 nkat (nanokatal) ml−1 after 168-h shake culture at 4°C. In addition, very little endoglucanase, β-mannanase, β-xylosidase, β-glucosidase, α-l-arabinofuranosidase, and no filter paper cellulase activities were detected. Among 12 carbon sources tested, maximum xylanase activity was induced by xylan, followed by lignocelluloses such as steamed wheat straw and alkali-treated bagasse. The level of enzyme activity produced on other carbon sources appeared to be constitutive. Among the complex organic nitrogen sources tested, the xylanase activity was most enhanced by yeast extract, followed by soymeal, Pharmamedia (cotton seed protein), and Alburex (potato protein). A batch culture at 10°C in a 5-l fermenter (3.5-1 working volume) using the optimized medium gave 385 nkat at 111 h of cultivation. The crude xylanase showed optimal activity at pH 5.0–5.5 and good stability at pH 4–9 (21 h at 4°C). Although the enzyme was maximally active at 45°–50°C, it appeared very thermolabile, showing a half-life of 78 min at 35°C. At 40°–50°C, it lost 71%–95% activity within 5 min. In this research the wood-rotting fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium culture was shown to be immobilized very well on the porous foam material. The biomass concentration increased to about 2–3 g/l in 4–5 days. Repeated-batch decolorization tests using immobilized Phanerochaete chrysosporium cells were conducted for 16 days with initial concentrations of 50–500 ppm of Red 533 dispersed dye, a decolorization efficiency of 80% or higher was achieved within a period of one or two days. The ability of the immobilized culture to perform a long-term decolorization operation was confirmed. Summary The development of embryo sacs (ES) in vitro and induction of gynogenesis were studied in onion flower bud culture. Explants were divided into three groups according to their size at inoculation: (a) small flower buds (2.3–3.0 mm in diameter); (b) medium flower buds (3.1–3.7 mm); and (c) large flower buds (3.8–4.4 mm). For histological study, excised ovaries were fixed at inoculation and then at 3-d intervals until day 12, and after 2 and 3 wk of culture. Some explants were cultured until embryo emergence, i.e., 3–5 mo. In total, 2592 ovules were examined histologically. At inoculation, 83% of ovules in small flower buds contained a megaspore mother cell; in 17% of ovules, two-nucleate ES occurred. In medium flower buds two-nucleate, four-nucleate, and mature ES were present at frequencies of 15%, 46%, and 40%, respectively. In large flower buds, only mature ES occurred. In vitro conditions did not disturb meiosis and megagametophyte development in non-degenerated ovules. Regardless of the developmental stage at inoculation, only mature ES occurred on day 12. Gynogenic embryos were found after 2 wk of culture, indicating that embryos developed in mature ES exclusively. Embryos were detected in 5.4% of histological studied ovules; however, the number of embryos after 3–5 mo. was higher (12.4%). The parthenogenetic origin of the embryos is discussed. In addition, ES containing endosperm only (6.5%) and both endosperm and embryo (0.4%) were observed.  相似文献
