Reindeer herding in Sweden is a form of pastoralism practised by the indigenous Sámi population. The economy is mainly based on meat production. Herd size is generally regulated by harvest in order not to overuse grazing ranges and keep a productive herd. Nonetheless, herd growth and room for harvest is currently small in many areas. Negative herd growth and low harvest rate were observed in one of two herds in a reindeer herding community in Central Sweden. The herds (A and B) used the same ranges from April until the autumn gathering in October–December, but were separated on different ranges over winter. Analyses of capture-recapture for 723 adult female reindeer over five years (2007–2012) revealed high annual losses (7.1% and 18.4%, for herd A and B respectively). A continuing decline in the total reindeer number in herd B demonstrated an inability to maintain the herd size in spite of a very small harvest. An estimated breakpoint for when herd size cannot be kept stable confirmed that the observed female mortality rate in herd B represented a state of herd collapse. Lower calving success in herd B compared to A indicated differences in winter foraging conditions. However, we found only minor differences in animal body condition between the herds in autumn. We found no evidence that a lower autumn body mass generally increased the risk for a female of dying from one autumn to the next. We conclude that the prime driver of the on-going collapse of herd B is not high animal density or poor body condition. Accidents or disease seem unlikely as major causes of mortality. Predation, primarily by lynx and wolverine, appears to be the most plausible reason for the high female mortality and state of collapse in the studied reindeer herding community.  相似文献

It has been suggested that animals may escape attack from mobile parasites by aggregating in selfish herds. A selfish herd disperses the risk of being attacked among its members and the per individual risk of parasite infection should therefore decrease with increasing animal density through the encounter–dilution effect. Moreover, in a selfish herd, dominant and agile animals should occupy the best positions and thereby receive fewer attacks compared to lower ranked animals at the periphery. We tested these predictions on reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus tarandus ) parasitized by warble flies ( Hypoderma tarandi ). Warble flies oviposit their eggs on reindeer during summer and induce strong anti-parasitic behavioural responses in the herds. In this period, reindeer are sexually segregated; females and calves form large and dense herds while males are more solitary. After hatching, the warble fly larvae migrate under the skin of their host where they encyst. In the present study encysted larvae were counted on newly slaughtered hides of male calves and 1.5 year old males from 18 different reindeer herds in Finnmark, northern Norway with large contrasts in reindeer density. In reindeer, body mass is correlated with fitness and social status and we hypothesized that individual carcass mass reflected the animal's ability to occupy the best positions within the herd. Larval abundance was higher among the 1.5 year old males than among the calves. For calves we found in accordance with the selfish herd hypothesis a negative relationship between larval abundance and animal density and between larval abundance and body mass. These relationships were absent for the 1.5 year old males. We suggest that these differences were due to different grouping behaviour where calves and females, but not males, aggregated in selfish herds where they escaped parasitism.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In many vertebrates size is one of the most influential and variable individual characteristics and a strong determinant of reproductive success. Body size is generally density dependent and decreases when intraspecific competition increases. Frequent and long-distance movements increase energy expenditures and, therefore, may also influence body size, particularly in highly mobile species. Caribou (Rangifer tarandus, also known as reindeer) exhibit tremendous variation in size and movements and thus represent an excellent candidate species to test the relationships between body size, population size, and movements. We analyzed body measurements of adult female caribou from 7 herds of the Québec-Labrador Peninsula, Canada, and we related their morphology to population size, movements, and annual ranges. The herds represented 3 ecotypes (migratory, montane, and sedentary). Ecotypes and herds differed in size (length), shape (roundness), and movements. The sedentary ecotype was larger and moved 4 to 7 times less than the migratory ecotype in the 1990s. At the start of a demographic growth period in the early 1960s, migratory caribou from the Rivière-George (hereafter George) herd had longer mandibles than caribou of the sedentary ecotype. Mandible length in the George herd declined in the 1980s after rapid population growth, while individuals performed extensive movements and the herd's annual range increased. Migratory caribou then became shorter than sedentary caribou. After the George herd decline in the 1990s, mandible length increased again near levels of the 1980s. Caribou from the migratory Rivière-aux-Feuilles herd later showed a similar decline in mandible length during a period of population growth, associated with longer movements and increasing annual range. We hypothesize that the density-dependent effect observed on body size might have been exerted through summer habitat degradation and movement variations during herd growth. Our study has 2 important implications for caribou management: the distinctiveness of different populations and ecotypes, and the correlations between population trajectories and changes in body condition and habitat.  相似文献

Previously it has been found that an important risk buffering strategy in the Saami reindeer husbandry in Norway is the accumulation of large herds of reindeer as this increases long-term household viability. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated how official policies, such as economic compensation for livestock losses, can influence pastoral strategies. This study investigated the effect of received predation compensation on individual husbandry units’ future herd size. The main finding in this study is that predation compensation had a positive effect on husbandry units’ future herd size. The effect of predation compensation, however, was nonlinear in some years, indicating that predation compensation had a positive effect on future herd size only up to a certain threshold whereby adding additional predation compensation had little effect on future herd size. More importantly, the effect of predation compensation was positive after controlling for reindeer density, indicating that for a given reindeer density husbandry units receiving more predation compensation performed better (measured as the size of future herds) compared to husbandry units receiving less compensation.  相似文献

Several aspects of the life history of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are related to the nutritional condition of the animals. Moreover, compensatory growth and fattening in summer decreases with age. The interaction of tooth wear and the standing crop of lichens on age-related variation in body size and tissue reserves was examined to evaluate the proximate causes of density-dependent food limitation on life history parameters in female reindeer. Studies in nine semi-domesticated free-ranging reindeer herds showed that molar height depended on the mean standing crop of terrestrial lichens in winter habitats. The extent of tooth wear had the strongest effect on body reserves among the oldest females (11–14 years). This indicates that severe tooth wear limits the animals′ ability to process food efficiently and, hence, to maintain their body reserves. Both tooth wear and the biomass of lichens influenced body mass in old females, probably because on heavily exploited winter ranges reindeer had to use higher proportions of lower-ranking coarser foods, especially dwarf shrubs. Knowledge about changes in behavioural traits related to wildness and tameness is for most mammals lacking, despite the increased trend of using domestic stock to re‐establish wild populations into historical ranges. To test for persistence of behavioural traits of wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) exposed to hunting, we sampled DNA, vigilance and flight responses in wild reindeer herds with varying domestic ancestry. Analyses of 14 DNA microsatellite loci revealed a dichotomous main genetic structure reflecting their native origin, with the Rondane reindeer genetically different from the others and with least differentiation towards the Hardangervidda reindeer. The genetic clustering of the reindeer in Norefjell‐Reinsjøfjell, Ottadalen and Forollhogna, together with domestic reindeer, supports a predominant domestic origin of these herds. Despite extensive hunting in all herds, the behavioural measures indicate increasing vigilance, alert and flight responses with increasing genetic dissimilarity with domestic herds. Vigilance frequency and time spent vigilant were higher in Rondane compared to Hardangervidda, which again were higher than herds with a domestic origin. We conclude that previous domestication has preserved a hard wired behavioural trait in some reindeer herds exhibiting less fright responses towards humans that extensive hunting has, but only slightly, altered. This brings novel and relevant knowledge to discussions about genetic diversity of wildlife in general and wild reindeer herds in Norway in specific.  相似文献

Abstract. Dissection of flies caught in northern Norway revealed that only mated, gravid females of H.tarandi (L.) and larviparous C.trompe (Modeer) were caught in host-mimicking C02-baited traps. Trapped females had the same gonotrophic and fat body (FB) conditions as females caught on and around reindeer. Most trapped females of both species were of middle to old age, having only one-half to no FB reserves left and only a few to moderate numbers of eggs or larvae remaining. Most young females trapped also had previously oviposited or larviposited at least once, and some newly eclosed, mated females were present throughout the fly season. Based on the known location of reindeer herds, it was evident that trapped flies that had recently oviposited or larviposited had dispersed into the trapping area from 25–100 km away. Declining FB reserves sustained wild-caught C.trompe females (and in utero larvae) in the laboratory for 14 days and H.tarandi females for 18 days. Reserve FB also was depleted during long flights. Females of both species that flew for the longest times (5.1–11.7 h) on a laboratory flight mill had low FB reserves, but nearly maximum numbers of eggs or larvae. Conversely, most females that flew for less than 5 h on the flight mill had little or no FB remaining, and few eggs or larvae. The large FB reserves accumulated as larvae feed in the vertebrate host enable the non-feeding adults to survive and infect their hosts even after prolonged periods of flight-inhibiting climatic conditions.  相似文献

The population structure and social organization of the Southern Elephant Seal, Mirounga leonina , were studied at South Georgia principally by extensive field census work and determination of age and reproductive history from sections of teeth taken from samples of bulls and cows.
The adult males of the South Georgia population were exploited from 1910 to 1964, mainly at the maximum sustainable yield for this population.
The present data are compared with similar information obtained from studies at South Georgia in 1951 during the exploitation phase and at Macquarie Island in the 1950's where sealing ended in 1919 and the population had stabilized.
Changes have been noted in the time of bull haul out, number of bulls ashore, cow: bull ratio, harem size and the age of harem bulls. These changes can all be attributed to the ending of exploitation. In contrast, the structure of the cow herd has not changed appreciably in the same period.
In addition, differences in growth, body size and population structure still persist between the South Georgia and Macquarie Island populations and it is likely that most of them may reflect differences in food availability at the two locations.  相似文献

Summary The Hardangervidda wild reindeer herd in Norway is the largest in Western Europe. It has fluctuated between 7000 and 32000 animals during the last 35 years. Four density-dependent effects were found: 1. A food limitation effect due to a shift in diet after overgrazing lichen on the winter range. This led to increased tooth wear and lowered body size and fat reserves. 2. A significant correlation between population density and juvenile winter survival rate. No effect on adult female survival rate was found. 3. A cohort effect. After population increase and overgrazing, recruitment was reduced by 30% and remained so after population reduction. Birth weights had increased by 30% 5 years after population reduction and the mean calving time was earlier. As a result, after population reduction weights of newborns were 40% greater at a comparable date. Neonatal survival rate was related to maternal condition during the last part of gestation which coincides with the peak winter snow accumulation. The slow increase in adult dressed body weights (DBW) after population reduction is due to the combined effects of increased tooth wear when winter range was limiting and to the cohort-generation time, so that an improvement in neonatal survival and size was first expressed in subsequent offspring cohorts. 4. An inter-generation effect. During 30 years of resource limitation, DBW decreased by 23%, birth rate was unchanged after the first peak, while fecundity increased by 15%, suggesting increased reproductive effort per unit body weight. Natural selection for increased reproductive effort by smaller females when food was limiting was suggested. Some size-effect due to hunters selecting the largest adult phenotypes was possible but not the main cause. These results do not support some earlier hypotheses about the effects of population density on size at maturity in ungulates.  相似文献

Defining genetic populations and detecting hybridization with introduced or domestic taxa are two major concerns for the conservation of population-level diversity. We studied the genetic population structure of large, migratory caribou herds (Rangifer tarandus granti) on Alaska’s North Slope and their potential hybridization with introduced domestic reindeer (R. t. tarandus). Using a population genetics approach, we determined: (1) whether the four caribou herds could be differentiated; (2) how distance and population size appear to drive genetic population structure; and (3) how contact with reindeer has affected the genetic identity of herds. Samples from four caribou herds (n = 245) and reindeer (n = 67) were analyzed at 19 microsatellite loci. We found that North Slope caribou are isolated by distance, with no differentiation among herd pairs except for the most geographically distant herds (F st  = 0.003, Jost’s D = 0.023; P-values < 0.001). We detected reindeer-caribou admixture in all populations except Kodiak Island, including 8 % of individuals in caribou herds and 14 % of individuals in Seward Peninsula reindeer herds. However, considering the stable or increasing trend in North Slope herds, reindeer introgression has had no apparent deleterious effect on herd demographics. Our findings indicate long-term genetic exchange among North Slope caribou herds when their ranges overlap, and suggest that herd size may influence susceptibility to reindeer introgression. As North Slope herd ranges are increasingly altered by industrial development, this study can provide a baseline for detecting potential future impacts to what are currently large, diverse, and naturally evolving herds.  相似文献

Abstract: Understanding the relative importance of density-dependent and density-independent feedback on population growth is essential for developing management strategies to conserve wildlife. We examined a 99-year time series of annual counts and removals for 2 bison (Bison bison) herds occupying northern and central Yellowstone National Park in the western United States. Yellowstone's aggressive management intervention effectively recovered bison from 46 animals in 1902 to > 1,500 animals in 1954. Supplemental feeding of the northern herd facilitated rapid growth (r = 0.16) during 1902 to 1952. Augmentation of the central herd with 71 animals also led to rapid growth over 1936 to 1954 (r = 0.10). In 1969, manipulative management ceased in the park, and we detected evidence of density-dependent changes in population growth rates for both herds during 1970 to 2000 as numbers increased to >3,000 animals. The central herd showed evidence of a constant density-dependent response over 1970 to 2000. In contrast, density dependence had a stronger effect on the northern herd's growth rate during 1970 to 1981 than during 1982 to 2000. We found evidence to suggest that these trends resulted from pulses of emigration from the central herd to the northern range beginning in 1982 in response to resource limitation generated by an interaction between density and severe snow pack. Corroborative evidence supporting this interpretation included 1) the annual growth of the central herd was negatively correlated with snow pack but that of the northern herd was not, 2) growth rates of the central and northern herds were uncorrelated during 1970 to 1981 but significantly and negatively correlated during 1982 to 2000, and 3) the northern herd could not have sustained the high removals experienced during 1984 to 2000 without immigration. Density-related emigration from the central herd to the northern range may be fueling bison emigration onto private and public lands where large-scale removals occur, exacerbating the brucellosis controversy for natural resource managers.  相似文献

Genetic variation at seven microsatellite DNA loci was quantified in 19 herds of wild caribou and domestic reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) from North America, Scandinavia and Russia. There is an average of 2.0-6.6 alleles per locus and observed individual heterozygosity of 0.33-0.50 in most herds. A herd on Svalbard Island, Scandinavia, is an exception, with relatively few alleles and low heterozygosity. The Central Arctic, Western Arctic and Porcupine River caribou herds in Alaska have similar allele frequencies and comprise one breeding population. Domestic reindeer in Alaska originated from transplants from Siberia, Russia, more than 100 years ago. Reindeer in Alaska and Siberia have different allele frequencies at several loci, but a relatively low level of genetic differentiation. Wild caribou and domestic reindeer in Alaska have significantly different allele frequencies at the seven loci, indicating that gene flow between reindeer and caribou in Alaska has been limited.  相似文献

Part 1: Diet selection was studied on free-ranging reindeer fitted with an esophageal fistula (EF) and by analysis of rumen samples from reindeer shot in the field. Plant density was assessed from quadrats on field plots. Three measures of palatability were used, the nitrogen, fiber, and total non structural carbohydrate (TNC) contents of samples from clipped vegetation. As lichen density decreased the EK reindeer included progressively more vascular litter and pieces of winter dormant species in their diet. Diets with highest TNC and N/F and the lowest fiber, providing the most readily digestible diets, were selected. The combined density-quality criterion gave the best prediction of their diets. In summer, forbs, and to some extent grasses and dwarf shrubs, were selected. Plants of highest density and in an early growth phase gave the best prediction of summer diets. In winter the variety of vascular plants utilized increased with increasing herd size and decreasing density of lichens in the vegetation. The width of diets was a function of diversity of available plants. It is suggested that dietary selection by reindeer has been a three stage process: evolution of a gastro-intestinal system capable of digesting lichens containing secondary compounds, behavioural tracking of the plant production pulse, and diet width scaling according to density-quality of all potential foods. Part 2: Wild reindeer closely followed the wave of vascular plant production in spring and summer with a significant correlation being found between the daily foraging time per habitat type and the highest concentration of green phytomass. Snow-bed meadows were the most consistently selected vegetation type by the four herds studied, viz. Hardangervidda, Snøhetta, Prudhoe Bay, and Svalbard, during the summer. Habitat niche-breadths were narrow during the winter, largely due to the limitation of access to the food supply by the snow-cover, broadened as the landscape became clear of snow, narrowed again with the initiation of plant growth and broadened once more as the wave of plant production reached all habitat types. At high levels of food resources the alpine herd (Hardangervidda) narrowed the feeding niche breadth (or adopted a selective feeding strategy) as the habitat niche breadth increased. The high arctic herd (Svalbard) living in the least productive environment, at the same time of year adopted a generalist feeding strategy as their habitat niche breadth expanded. Part 3: In this part the temporal organization of a low-alpine herd of reindeer (Hardangervidda) is described, and subsequently compared with those of two arctic herds. Their foraging efficiencies under different degrees of food availability were analysed, in order to test the hypothesis that food intake changes in response to the prevailing state of the food resources. The number of daily feeding bouts increased from 2 to 6 as the diet changed from the winter to the summer pasturage. Strong winds in winter and insect harassment in summer severely depressed the daily time spent foraging. When these environmental factors were accounted for no significant inter-seasonal differences in daily foraging time of the low alpine herd were found; on average 50% of each day was spent grazing, of which 78% of the time was spent on actual ingestion (feeding rate). The feeding rate within the active periods varied with the snow-depth, due to the need to dig a food crater in the snow and due to the particular selective feeding strategy adopted. The data from the present and from other studies suggest that the foraging efficiency of wild reindeer, expressed as their daily food intake follows a Holling type II functional response as food availability changes. Part 4: Sheep is the only sympatric ruminant which grazes with the reindeer on alpine pastures in Norway. The inter-specific niche relationships ot the wild reindeer and the domestic sheep in summer were studied on part of the western Hardangervidda. to test the hypothesis of inter-specific competition. Three niche dimensions were meas-ured, diel, habitat utilization, and spatial distribution. The estimates of the degree of overlap obtained suggest that this is relatively high for diet and habitat utilization but low for spatial distribution, which leads to a low degree of foraging interference. Since the intensity of both interspeeific and intra-specific competition depends on the ratio of the herbivore densities to the food resource density, the degree ol overlap in utilization by the two species tell us nothing about the degree of competition. Present numbers of both species on Hardangervidda have a beneficial influence on the vegetation, by opening-up the shrub-layer canopy and thus facilitating the main-tenance of grasses and forbs in the field layer, which has a higher carrying capacity for ruminants. The balance between the beneficial effects and inter-generic competition (if any) deriving from the present-day stocking rales is so tar unknown. Only long-term monitoring of the performance of both populations will shed light on this competitive aspect.  相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that herd accumulation can be a risk reducing strategy aimed at increasing security in an unpredictable environment. Saami reindeer husbandry in Norway is characterized by environmental unpredictability and occasionally harsh winters can have dramatic negative effects on reindeer population densities. While herd accumulation has been found to be an adaptive risk reducing strategy in stochastic environments (i.e., individually rational), the accumulation of large herds may also result in collectively negative density dependent effects, which may negatively affect individual herders (i.e., collectively irrational). We found that individual husbandry units’ strategies, such as accumulating reindeer, have a larger effect on individual husbandry units’ herd size than a negative density-dependent effect.  相似文献

Reindeer/caribou (Rangifer tarandus), which constitute a biological resource of vital importance for the physical and cultural survival of Arctic residents, and inhabit extremely seasonal environments, have received little attention in the global change debate. We investigated how body weight and growth rate of reindeer calves were affected by large-scale climatic variability [measured by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) winter index] and density in one population in central Norway. Body weights of calves in summer and early winter, as well as their growth rate (summer to early winter), were significantly influenced by density and the NAO index when cohorts were in utero. Males were heavier and had higher absolute growth than females, but there was no evidence that preweaning condition of male and female calves were influenced differently by the NAO winter index. Increasing NAO index had a negative effect on calves' body weight and growth rate. Increasing density significantly reduced body weight and growth rate of calves, and accentuated the effect of the NAO winter index. Winters with a higher NAO index are thus severe for reindeer calves in this area and their effects are associated with nutritional stress experienced by the dams during pregnancy or immediately after calving. Moreover, increased density may enhance intra-specific competition and limits food available at the individual level within cohorts. We conclude that if the current pattern of global warming continues, with greater change occurring in northern latitudes and during winter as is predicted, reduced body weight of reindeer calves may be a consequence in areas where winters with a high NAO index are severe. This will likely have an effect on the livelihood of many northern indigenous peoples, both economically and culturally.  相似文献

Dairy herd size is expected to increase in many European countries, given the recent policy changes within the European Union. Managing more cows may have implications for herd performance in the post-quota era. The objective of this study was to characterise spring-calving herds according to size and rate of expansion, and to determine trends in breeding policy, reproduction and production performance, which will inform industry of the likely implications of herd expansion. Performance data from milk recording herds comprising 775,795 lactations from 2,555 herds for the years 2004 to 2008 inclusive were available from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Herds were classified into Small (average of 37 cows), Medium (average of 54 cows) and Large (average of 87 cows) and separately into herds that were not expanding (Nil expansion), herds expanding on average by three cows per year (Slow expansion) and herds expanding on average by eight cows per year (Rapid expansion). There was no association between rate of expansion and 305-day fat and protein yield. However, 305-day milk yield decreased and milk protein and fat percentage increased with increasing rate of expansion. There were no associations between herd size and milk production except for protein and fat percentage, which increased with increasing herd size. Average parity number of the cows decreased as rate of expansion increased and tended to decrease as herd size increased. In rapidly expanding herds, cow numbers were increased by purchasing more cattle. The proportion of dairy sires relative to beef sires used in the breeding programme of expanding herds increased and there was more dairy crossbreeding, albeit at a low rate. Similarly, large herds were using more dairy sires and fewer beef sires. Expanding herds and large herds had superior reproductive performance relative to non-expanding and small herds. Animals in expanding herds calved for the first time at a younger age, had a shorter calving interval and were submitted for breeding by artificial insemination at a higher rate. The results give confidence to dairy producers likely to undergo significant expansion post-quota such that, despite managing more cows, production and reproductive performance need not decline. The management skills required to achieve these performance levels need investigation.  相似文献

Distances of detection and flight away of reindeer disturbed by approaching human on foot were used to compare reindeer alertness and vigilance. Population differences depended on genetic origin (wild, feral, and tame reindeer) and hunting. No correlations of vigilance and alertness were found with presence of predators, sex composition of herds, and presence of newborns in herd. Herd size affecting jointly with genetic origin or hunting had negative correlation with alertness.  相似文献

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) industry in Alaska began with animals imported from Siberia (Russia) in the 1890's. Cervid herpes virus 2 (CvHV2) is endemic in reindeer in Scandinavia. We sought to determine if the same virus, or similar herpesviruses, were circulating in Alaskan reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti). Serum samples from 292 reindeer were collected during annual reindeer handlings (1988-2005) near Nome, Alaska. In 2005, swab samples were collected from 40 calves from this herd, near Nome, Alaska. In 2007, ocular and nasal swab samples were collected from 30 apparently healthy reindeer calves near Wales, Alaska. Samples of plasma and white blood cells were collected from three Alaskan caribou herds, Mulchatna (n = 24), Teshekpuk (n = 34) and the Western Arctic (n = 87) in 2009.  相似文献

Caribou and reindeer herds are declining across their circumpolar range, coincident with increasing arctic temperatures and precipitation, and anthropogenic landscape change. Here, we examine the mechanisms by which climate warming and anthropogenic landscape change influence caribou and reindeer population dynamics, namely changes in phenology, spatiotemporal changes in species overlap, and increased frequency of extreme weather events, and demonstrate that many caribou and reindeer herds show demographic signals consistent with these changes. While many caribou and reindeer populations historically fluctuated, the current, synchronous population declines emphasize the species' vulnerability to global change. Summary The introduced reindeer of South Georgia have had a serious impact on the vegetation throughout the range of three populations on the island. Exclosure experiments in areas where the reindeer were introduced have resulted in a dramatic change in the composition of the protected vegetation. Poa flabellata (the major winter food) and Acaena magellanica (a major summer food) have recovered to their former status inside the exclosures, while Deschampsia antarctia and the introduced grass Poa annua tolerate grazing and trampling and have spread over the grazed areas. Festuca contracta and Rostkovia magellanica are not eaten by the reindeer. Trampling has resulted in a high proportion of bare soil and peat in sites freely accessible to reindeer. However, the changes in the vegetation have not had such a significant effect on the associated invertebrate fauna. Thus in grazed and protected areas the faunistic composition is qualitatively similar, although there are quantitative differences, and some of the trends can probably be attributed to the presence of the reindeer. Compared with reindeer-free areas, the abundance of the perimylopid beetle Hydromedion sparsutum (a major primary decomposer) is reduced. The frequency of their egg parasite Notomymar aptenosoma (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) increases. Consequently the ratio of perimylopoids to mymarids found in pitfall traps shifts from 1:0.01 (ungrazed areas) to 1:0.54 (grazed areas). Also the frequency of sciarids was found to be higher in reindeer areas. The larvae of these probably introduced gnats do not play a role in the natural terrestrial ecosystem of South Georgia, but in reindeer areas they appear to establish larger populations because they are able to live deeper in the soil and in hardened substrates. There is also a shift in the ratio between Collembola (major prey) to spiders from 1:1.3 (ungrazed areas) to 1:0.82 (grazed areas), for animals collected in pitfall traps. This may be a result of the trampling effect of the reindeer.  相似文献
