This study sought to investigate whether the effects of spa therapy are subject to seasonal variation as suggested by conventional spa therapy research. A total of 268 female (age 31-90 yr) and 119 male (age 35-85 yr) patients with noninflammatory chronic pain were studied. Patients stayed at an Austrian spa for 3 wk and received 2-4 treatments per day, including mudpacks, massages, and exercise therapy. In different groups of patients for 2 yr, pain (self-assessed by questionnaire and Likert scales) and associated variables (mood, fatigue) were measured at the beginning, end, and 6 wk after spa therapy. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance controlling for possible group differences between seasons and cosinor analysis. The effect of spa therapy on pain was seasonally dependent; short-term decrease of pain was best between April and June and medium-term decrease of pain was best between October and November, with a second minor peak in fall and spring, respectively. The magnitude of the seasonal variation was greater for back (∼30%) than for joint (∼20%) pain. Positive mood also improved most between April and June. The observed semi-annual variations of pain do not correspond to the well-known annual change in many physiological and psychological variables. The results suggest that the effects of spa therapy and possibly other related treatments, such as physical and alternative therapies, are subject to seasonal variation.  相似文献

Seasonal variations have been described in humans in several variables such as sleep, mood, appetite, food preferences, or body weight. We hypothesized that these variations could also influence the decrease in body weight rate in patients submitted to body weight loss interventions. Thus, here we tested the variations of weight loss according to the time of the year the surgery took place in a group patients (n = 1322) submitted to bariatric surgery in the Hospital Universitari de la Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona (geographical coordinates: 41°25?41″N 2°8?32″E). For the analysis, the percentage of total body weight loss (%TWL), excess body weight loss (%EWL) and percentage of body mass index loss (%BMIL) were calculated at 3 (n = 1255), 6 (n = 1172), 9 (n = 1002), and 12 months (n = 1076) after surgery. For %EWL and %BMIL a statistically significant seasonal variation was detected when the variables were calculated at 3 months, but not at the other times, with more weight loss in summer-fall. However, seasonal variations were not detected for %TWL (p = 0.09). The mean amplitude of the seasonal rhythm for %EWL was of 1.8%, while for the rhythm of %BMIL was 0.7%. Moreover, a second peak was detected in January–February modulating the seasonal rhythm of the two variables. Results confirm seasonal variations in humans and indicate that short term responses to weight loss can be modulated by the time of year.  相似文献

Seasonality is a phenomenon that is characterized by changes over the year in sleep, mood, behaviour, appetite and body weight. In humans, seasonal variations have been found in certain variables, such as lipid variables and body mass index. We hypothesize that this rhythm could influence the expected variation of the levels of biochemical variables in cases of body weight loss. Thus, the goal of this study was to observe whether the time of year in which bariatric surgery (BS) took place modulated the changes in several variables related to glucidic and lipid metabolism. Blood samples were obtained from 24 women and 10 men before BS and 1 and 3 months after BS. We calculated the percentage of variation that occurred for each individual and for each variable as a function of the time of the year. Data were adjusted to a 12-month period sinusoidal curve, with significance being set at p < 0.05. The results showed that almost all of the studied variables changed due to the BS according to a seasonal rhythm. Most of the variables showed a decrease that was most prominent in winter. In the cases of body mass index (BMI), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), and cortisol, the highest variation occurred in winter. Insulin and cholesterol in high-density lipoproteins (cHLD) variations were higher in springtime. Glucose variation showed a decrease after surgery with acrophase in summer-fall and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in spring-summer. Ghrelin levels showed increases with a rhythm of variation with an acrophase in summer-fall. The seasonal rhythm found in this study fits nearly with the inverse of the endogenous circannual rhythm of the variables studied. The time of the year when the highest variation takes place is related to the circannual rhythm of the variable. The results agree with the manifestation of seasonal rhythm in human biochemical variables, which are reflected in the responses to weight loss after BS.  相似文献

Emergence, attraction to traps, and seasonal abundance of cerambycids (Coleoptera) whose larvae injure Cupressaceae were studied under natural conditions in southern Connecticut between 1999 and 2005. Adults of the Asian cerambycid Callidiellum rufipenne (Motschulsky) emerged from trunk sections of Thuja occidentalis L. between late March and mid-May. In contrast, the native Atimia confusa confusa (Say) emerged from trunk sections of Juniperus virginiana L. between late August and mid-October. Emerged adults of both cerambycids had a 1:1 sex ratio, and the emergence of Callidiellum rufipenne showed protandry. In a comparison of four trapping methods, sticky bands stapled to trap logs and dead trees of J. virginiana had the highest density of adults of A. confusa confusa and Callidiellum rufipenne. Based on adults trapped on sticky bands on trap logs, dead trees, or girdled trees of J. virginiana or T. occidentalis at different locations, Callidiellum rufipenne was active on hosts for 5-8 wk between April and June; Semanotus ligneus ligneus (Say) for 4 wk in April; Callidium frigidum Casey for 5 wk between early May and early June; and A. confusa confusa for approximately 12 wk between April and early July and again for 2-5 wk between September and late October. Catches of A. confusa confusa were significantly female-biased. Number of beetles captured usually was not correlated with the size of the sticky band on trap logs, cut trees, or girdled trees. This is the first quantitative study on emergence, trapping, and seasonal abundance of cerambycids associated with Cupressaceae in northeastern North America.  相似文献

Leaffall phenology is an important periodical event in forests, contributing to mobilization of organic matter from primary producers to soil. For seasonal forests, leaffall periodicity has been related to rainfall regime and dry season length. In weakly seasonal forests, where there is no marked dry season, other climatic factors could trigger leaf shed. In this study, we aimed to determine if other climatic variables (wind speed, solar radiation, photosynthetic photon flux density [PPFD], day length, temperature, and relative humidity) could be better correlated with patterns of litter and leaffall in a weakly seasonal subtropical wet forest in Puerto Rico. Leaffall patterns were correlated mainly with solar radiation, PPFD, day length, and temperature; and secondarily with rainfall. Two main peaks of leaffall were observed: April–June and August–September, coinciding with the periods of major solar radiation at this latitude. Community leaffall patterns were the result of overlapping peaks of individual species. Of the 32 species analyzed, 21 showed phenological patterns, either unimodal (16 species), bimodal (three species), or multimodal (two species). Lianas also presented leaffall seasonality, suggesting that they are subject to the same constraints and triggering factors affecting trees. In addition to solar radiation as a main determinant of leaffall timing in tropical forests, our findings highlight the importance of interannual variation and asynchrony, suggesting that leaffall is the result of a complex interaction between environmental and physiological factors.  相似文献

以沈阳城区昭陵古油松为样本,建立了古油松标准化年表、差值年表和自回归年表. 结果表明,年表与沈阳1月和4月的极端最低气温显著相关;与2月的降水量、年均水汽压分别为显著和极显著相关,年表对4、5、9和10月的水汽压响应较强,且均与自回归年表显著相关.年表与相对湿度的年指标,4、5、6、9、10和11月月指标的相关性较高,其中与年值和5月值分别为显著相关(差值年表除外)和极显著相关.蒸发与油松的生长在全年和绝大部分月份呈负相关,其中5月最明显,而1月的蒸发量与油松年表呈正相关.年表的窄化突变佐证了1 700年以来32次历史资料记录的主要旱灾年.沈阳地区的油松生长也受全球或半球尺度温度波动的影响.3种年表对以往太阳黑子的变化和地磁的活动呈现明显负相关,其中与太阳黑子活动存在显著的11年、23年和50年左右的公共周期,与地磁指标在10.5年、20年和45年左右存在共同的周期变化.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in the plasma total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) have been repeatedly reported, with contradictory results regarding the pattern of seasonal variation of these parameters. Furthermore, it is still not well established whether the variation is due to changes in the nutrition or changes in physical activity depending on the season. The aim of this study was therefore to determine plasma TC and HDL-C in different groups of healthy participants: 19 vegetarians with a constant diet independent of the season, 14 athletes with almost constant physical activity over the year, and 114 controls in the age groups 20–26 years (mean age 24+1.5 years) and 40–48 years (mean age 44.3+2.1 years). Over 2 years, blood samples were collected every 2–3 months and were analyzed for plasma TC and HDL-C. At all visits, body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated, and nutrition and physical activity profiles were obtained. The seasonal model was calculated using object-oriented software for the analysis of longitudinal data in S (OSWALD); multiple regression analysis was used to determine the influence of age, gender, diet, and physical activity on seasonal changes of the lipid parameters. In all groups, we found an annual rhythm of the plasma TC and HDL-C concentrations, which can be mathematically described by a sine curve with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. This rhythm was independent of the age, gender, BMI, diet, or physical activity. The observed seasonal differences between the maximum and the minimum were about 5%–10% for TC and about 5%–8% for HDL-C concentration. These differences were greater than the determined circadian (TC 3.5%, HDL-C 4%) and day-to-day changes for TC and HDL-C (coefficient of variation <5% for both). In conclusion, annual rhythm of TC and HDL-C is not primarily induced by seasonal differences in dietary intake or physical activity. Therefore, the annual rhythm in cholesterol levels is most likely determined by endogenous factors or factors directly related to seasonal changes in the environment. We document and compare the annual molt of the Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) on two islands off the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula that are the northern and southern extremes of its distribution in Mexico. During 2014, observations were made from March to July on Todos Santos Island (northern extreme) and from January to June on San Roque Island (southern extreme). On Todos Santos, the premolt lasted 15 wk (March–June) and the molt 12 wk (April–July). On San Roque, the premolt lasted 22 wk (January–June) and the molt 17 wk (February–June). The proportion of seals undergoing molt peaked on 26 May on Todos Santos and on 7 June on San Roque. Shedding of old hair most commonly initiated on the torso and progressed to the head and flippers (reverse molting pattern). The period when the highest number of harbor seals haul out in Mexico is in late April on the more southerly islands and in early May on the more northerly islands, when a large proportion of seals are in premolt.  相似文献

Although various treatments have been presented for phantom pain, there is little proof supporting the benefits of pharmacological treatments, surgery or interventional techniques, electroconvulsive therapy, electrical nerve stimulation, far infrared ray therapy, psychological therapies, etc. Here, we report the preliminary results for phantom pain reduction by low-frequency and intensity electromagnetic fields under clinical circumstances. Our method is called as Electromagnetic-Own-Signal-Treatment (EMOST). Fifteen people with phantom limb pain participated. The patients were treated using a pre-programmed, six sessions. Pain intensity was quantified upon admission using a 0–10 verbal numerical rating scale. Most of the patients (n = 10) reported a marked reduction in the intensity of phantom limb pain. Several patients also reported about improvement in their sleep and mood quality, or a reduction in the frequency of phantom pain after the treatments. No improvements in the reduction of phantom limb pain or sleep and mood improvement were reported in the control group (n = 5). Our nonlinear electromagnetic EMOST method may be a possible therapeutic application in the reduction of phantom limb pain. Here, we also suggest that some of the possible effects of the EMOST may be achieved via the redox balance of the body and redox-related neural plasticity.  相似文献

The impact of working time arrangements (WTA) on health has been studied extensively. Still, little is known about the interrelation between work schedules, working hours, and depressed mood. For work schedules, the underlying assumptions regarding depressed mood refer to a disturbance of social and biological rhythms, whereas for working hours, the assumptions relate to workload and work capacity. Conversely, depressed mood may urge an employee to adjust his/her work schedule and/or number of working hours/week (h/wk). The aim of this study was to assess the association between work schedule and working hours with depressed mood. Using baseline data from the Maastricht Cohort Study, depressed mood in day work was compared with depressed mood in different shiftwork schedules (n?=?8843). Within day work, several categories of working h/wk were studied in association with depressed mood (n?=?7217). The association between depressed mood and several aspects of overtime was assessed separately. Depressed mood was measured with a dichotomous item: “Did you feel down every day over the last two weeks?” Separate logistic regression analyses were conducted for men and women, with adjustments for potential confounders. The odds ratio (OR) for depressed mood was greater for men involved in shiftwork than for men only involved in day work (three-shift OR?=?2.05 [95% confidence interval, CI 1.52–2.77]; five-shift OR?=?1.34 [95% CI 1.00–1.80]; irregular-shift OR?=?1.79 [95% CI 1.27–2.53]). In female employees, five-shift work was associated with a higher prevalence of depressed mood (OR?=?5.96 [95% CI 2.83–12.56]). Regarding the number of working h/wk, men working <26?h/wk had a higher prevalence of depressed mood than men working 36–40?h/wk (OR?=?2.73 [95% CI 1.35–5.52]). After conducting trend analyses, a significant decreasing trend was found in men, whereas an increasing trend was found in women working a high number of hours. Furthermore, a dose-response relationship was present in men regarding the number of overtime h/wk. This study showed that different work schedules and working hours are associated with depressed mood. Shiftwork was related to a higher prevalence of depressed mood than day work. The association was more pronounced for male employees. Regarding the number of working h/wk, male and female employees showed an opposite trend in depressed mood. Because of the possibility of a healthy worker effect and the possibility of a reciprocal relationship between WTA and depressed mood, the reported relation might be underestimated. 1. Seasonal plasma levels of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and cortisol were investigated between November and June in seven penned male Axis deer. 2. No distinct seasonal variation of cortisol has been detected. The levels oscillated between 1 and 5 micrograms/dl. 3. The stress of immobilization and sampling had little effect on cortisol levels. Concentrations remained mostly stable in three consecutive samples taken 10 min apart. 4. T3 concentrations were stable between November and March (average values 110-120 ng/dl). After a sharp decline in April (average 70 ng/dl), a strong rebound in May and June was observed. 5. A distinct seasonal peak of T4 (highest individual value, 12.1 micrograms/dl) was detected in March. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or ubiquinone, a redox component of the mitochondrial electron transport chains, is a powerful antioxidant and membrane stabilizer that may prevent cellular damage during myocardial ischemia and reperfusion therapy. Coenzyme Q10 has been used primarily as an adjuvant therapy for some cardiomyopathies. However, one of the main problems in CoQ10 administration is the high variability of endogenous plasma and tissue levels, which seems to be dependent on several factors. This work explores temporal 24h and seasonal variation as well as gender and racial differences in endogenous plasma ubiquinone concentration. Coenzyme Q10 measurements (quantified by HPLC-UV) of 16 healthy volunteers were done during the daytime hours of activity beginning at 09:00h one day and ending at 09:00h the next day (13 different determinations) in two distinct months, April and October, of the year. A statistically significant circadian rhythm in plasma ubiquinone concentration that includes only the fundamental 24h component was demonstrated both in the April and October data. Furthermore, the time-point means of the ubiquinone concentration in the October study were invariably higher than those obtained in the April study. No statistically significant differences were found in CoQ10 concentration between male and female subjects, both in April and in October. In addition, racial differences were demonstrated; lower plasma ubiquinone levels were found in Caucasian compared to African subjects. However, the latter small group of subjects failed to demonstrate a circadian rhythm, neither in the April nor in the October analysis.  相似文献

We conducted experiments to evaluate the effects of different patterns of seasonal light availability on ramet size and sexual reproduction in the understory herb, Aster acuminatus. In April 1982, 200 potted rhizomes were divided equally between a high light and a shaded site. Twice during the growing season subsets of pots were reciprocally transferred between the sites, resulting in eight different light treatments. There was significant variation among treatments in mean ramet weight (0.41–1.21 g), height (15.0–23.4 cm), number of flowers (0.4–7.9) and percentage of ramets flowering (14–95). Periods of high light increased ramet height, weight, rhizome production and flowering, but high light earlier in the season increased ramet height more than did high light later in the season, while high light later had pronounced effects on the other three traits. Measurements taken in nine natural patches experiencing different patterns of seasonal light availability are consistent with the experimental results. The results provide new insights into the general phenomenon of size-dependent reproduction in herbs and illustrate how the phenology of biomass allocation can affect growth and reproduction.  相似文献

Decadal‐ to multi‐decadal variations have been reported in many regional ecosystems in the North Pacific, resulting in an increasing demand to elucidate the link between long‐term climatic forcing and marine ecosystems. We detected phenological and quantitative changes in the copepod community in response to the decadal climatic variation in the western subarctic North Pacific by analyzing the extensive zooplankton collection taken since the 1950s, the Odate Collection. Copepod species were classified into five seasonal groups depending on the timing of the annual peak in abundance. The abundance of the spring community gradually increased for the period 1960–2002. The spring–summer community also showed an increasing trend in May, but a decadal oscillation pattern of quasi‐30‐year cycles in July. Phenological changes coincided with the climate regime shift in the mid‐1970s, indicated by the Pacific decadal oscillation index (PDO). After the regime shift, the timing of the peak abundance was delayed one month, from March–April to April–May, in the spring community, whereas it peaked earlier, from June–July to May–June, in the spring–summer community, resulting in an overlap of the high productivity period for the two communities in May. Wintertime cooling, followed by rapid summertime warming, was considered to be responsible for delayed initiation and early termination of the productive season after the mid‐1970s. Another phenological shift, quite different from the previous decade, was observed in the mid‐1990s, when warm winters followed by cool summers lengthened the productive season. The results suggest that climatic forcing with different decadal cycles may operate independently during winter–spring and spring–summer to create seasonal and interannual variations in hydrographic conditions; thus, combinations of these seasonal processes may determine the annual biological productivity.  相似文献

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition that impacts many people worldwide and involves weight-bearing joints, resulting in chronic pain. In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of inpatient and outpatient physical therapy modalities and spa combination treatments on pain and functional status in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Seventy-four patients diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis were included in this study. The patients were randomized into two groups, inpatient (n?=?37) and outpatient (n?=?37) physical therapy. All patients received a physical therapy program (superficial heater + deep heater + transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) for 2 weeks and spa therapy. All cases were evaluated clinically, laboratory, and radiographically. In order to evaluate pain and functional status, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities osteoarthritis index (WOMAC), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test were used before and after treatment. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the TUG test and WOMAC scores (p?>?0.05). However, a significant difference was found in VAS scores in favor of the outpatient group (p?<?0.05). As a result, although there was a significant improvement in pain scores in the outpatient group, multicenter studies with larger patient groups may provide more evidence.

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi are important for efficient nutrient uptake of several widespread arctic plant species. Knowledge of temporal variation of ECM fungi, and the relationship of these patterns to environmental variables, is essential to understand energy and nutrient cycling in Arctic ecosystems. We sampled roots of Bistorta vivipara ten times over two years; three times during the growing‐season (June, July and September) and twice during winter (November and April) of both years. We found 668 ECM OTUs belonging to 25 different ECM lineages, whereof 157 OTUs persisted throughout all sampling time‐points. Overall, ECM fungal richness peaked in winter and species belonging to Cortinarius, Serendipita and Sebacina were more frequent in winter than during summer. Structure of ECM fungal communities was primarily affected by spatial factors. However, after accounting for spatial effects, significant seasonal variation was evident revealing correspondence with seasonal changes in environmental conditions. We demonstrate that arctic ECM richness and community structure differ between summer (growing‐season) and winter, possibly due to reduced activity of the core community, and addition of fungi adapted for winter conditions forming a winter‐active fungal community. Significant month × year interactions were observed both for fungal richness and community composition, indicating unpredictable between‐year variation. Our study indicates that addressing seasonal changes requires replication over several years.  相似文献

The growth and reproduction of the dorid nudibranch Onchidoris aspera (Alder & Hancock 1842) was examined at East Point, Nahant, Massachusetts (September 1981 to April 1982) and field observations were made over 4yr (June 1978 to June 1982). Juvenile recruitment into the shallow subtidal (6–10 m) occurred in early October. Maximum specific growth rates (biomass) of 0.473 ± 0.759 mg·mg?1·month?1 were attained during the period of October through December. Experiments with pairs of individuals showed that reproductive effort could be high, amounting to 41–108% of nonrespired assimilation, over 10 wk of spawning (28 December to 12 March). Adults and juveniles are temporally separated at this site; parental populations persist until approximately June, and juvenile recruits are not observed until the following October. Occurrence of this species at this site has an upper thermal limit of ≈15°C; the temperature at which spawning takes place lies between 0–4°C. Feeding on bryozoan prey is suctorial by means of a well developed buccal pump; observations and experiments showed that the most common encrusting bryozoan, Electra pilosa (L.) was the preferred prey and that upon which maximum growth rates were achieved in Onchidoris aspera.  相似文献

The influence of tray drench (TD) treatments, with and without foliar applications of the plant activator acibenzolar-S-methyl (Actigard), was examined in replicated field plots in 2000--2002. TD treatments of Actigard, imidacloprid (Admire), and these two products combined had little effect on seasonal mean thrips populations; however, thrips densities were lower in the Admire-treated plots at 4 and 5 wk after transplanting. Actigard and Admire TD treatments significantly reduced the seasonal incidence of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) symptomatic plants in 2 yr in the study. The combination of both products was better in reducing TSWV than Actigard alone. Three early-season foliar sprays of Actigard had no effect on thrips population densities, but they did reduce TSWV incidence. The tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds), comprised 92-95% of the thrips complex each year. Other thrips collected on tobacco foliage at very low densities included Haplothrips spp., Chirothrips spp., Limothrips cerealium (Haliday), other Frankliniella spp. and other unidentified species. Using nonstructural TSWV protein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, 1.5-2.3% of the F. fusca tested positive for nonstructural TSWV protein. Cured yields were higher in the TD treatments and the Actigard foliar treatments in the years with high TSWV in the untreated plots. The TD treatments and foliar Actigard had little impact on plant height or grade index; however, TD treatments with Admire had low tobacco aphid, Myzus nicotianae Blackman, populations through 10 wk after transplanting. The early-season Actigard and Admire treatment options are management decisions that can effectively reduce the risks of TSWV incidence in flue-cured tobacco.  相似文献

Five male camels dwelling in the Algerian Sahara were studied for circadian rhythmicity in plasma aldosterone concentration and its seasonal modulation. Blood was sampled at a frequency of 1 h or less for a span of 27 h during each season of the year. The mean plasma aldosterone concentration exhibited a significant circadian rhythmicity in every season of the year. Plasma aldosterone concentration was lowest in the morning, increased in the afternoon, and generally highest in the late evening. The peak of the circadian rhythm exhibited seasonal variation; it occurred at 20:04h in October, 16:41h in December, 20:40h in March, and 24:16h in June. The rhythm's 24h mean also exhibited seasonal variability, being significantly higher in March and June compared to October.  相似文献
