As soon as they hatch, gallinaceous chicks follow broody hens. This matriarchal unit presents a temporal organization of activity. The ontogeny of this ultradian rhythm of activity was followed in Japanese quail during their first 3 weeks of life. Under controlled laboratory conditions, 12 groups of four chicks were recorded using an activity monitoring system. They were observed between the ages of 2 and 17 days. Chicks in groups presented an ultradian rhythm of activity, with a period that increased significantly from 14.3 ± 1.4 minutes when chicks were 2 days old to 26.0 ± 1.9 minutes when they were 16 days old. The increase of ultradian periodicity was particularly pronounced during their first and third weeks of life. Finally, the ultradian period was correlated positively with body weight of the chicks. The function of ultradian rhythms is not yet clearly elucidated. In particular, short-term rhythms are expressed during early ontogeny, especially in broods of precocial birds. We investigated the relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle of a group of young Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and the level of social synchronisation and spatial cohesion between the birds within that group. The subjects were descended from two lines selected for either very pronounced rhythmic or arrhythmic circadian activity. We found a positive relationship between the clarity of the ultradian rhythm of the activity/rest cycle when birds were young and the clarity of the circadian rhythm of feeding activity when birds were older, but still immature. The temporal organisation of the behaviour of the chicks from these two lines was observed in outdoor aviaries, when they were 4, 8, 12 and 15 days old. The mean ultradian period expressed by groups of 12 chicks was variable, with a minimum of 6 minutes. The ultradian period lengthened regularly as chicks grew older, and reached approximately 40 min on day 15. The clarity of the ultradian rhythmicity of group activity was linked to the level of inter-individual social synchronisation and of spatial cohesion; the more pronounced the ultradian rhythms of a group, the greater the temporal and spatial cohesion of the chicks within the group. Moreover, these characteristics varied with the age of the chicks. Finally, chicks in the less rhythmic groups weighed less. Synchronization of activity cycles is common in coveys of gallinaceous birds, which usually include a dozen chicks at birth. To study this synchronization more precisely, we recorded the ultradian rhythms of activity of seven groups of young Japanese quail reared in the laboratory, without brooding females. Four groups included only kin-related birds (K1-K4), two mixed groups consisted of associated chicks from two families (M1 and M2 groups), and the seventh group (NK group) included only non-kin chicks. Numbers of chicks in a group varied from eight to 14, depending on the group. They were observed twice during their two first weeks of life (day 3 and day 10) and all activities were recorded by scan sampling. An ultradian rhythm of activity, with a period less than 20 minutes, was found. This period varied among quail families. All chick groups were globally synchronized, except group M2 on day 3. Inter-individual levels of synchronization were calculated. Spearman rank correlation coefficients of the non-kin chicks were significantly lower than those of kin-related chicks. This was especially clear on day 3. Survival of newborn quails is linked to their presence within a covey or a group. Their survival, as well that of their brothers and sisters, may be enhanced by an ability to synchronize with kin better than with non-kin chicks.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the development of the circadian rhythm of the salivary cortisol in premature infants and its correlation with the onset of the sleep–activity behavior pattern during the first 3 weeks of life under controlled light:dark conditions. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of acoustic stimulation by audiotaped lullabies or the maternal voice on the cortisol values and long-term sleep–activity patterns. The study was a block-randomized, prospective clinical trial with a study population of 62 preterm neonates (30?<?37 gestational age). We compared two study groups who listened either to music or to the maternal voice (music: N?=?20; maternal voice: N?=?20) with a matched control group (N?=?22). The acoustic stimulation took place every evening between 20:00 and 21:00?h for 30?min over a period of 2 weeks. The cortisol values and activity–rest behavior of the neonates were determined during the first 3 weeks of life on the 1st, 7th and 14th day. Actigraphic monitoring was used to record the activity pattern continuously over 24?h and a validated algorithm for neonates was used to estimate sleep and wakefulness. The saliva samples were obtained 10?min before and 10?min after the acoustic interventions for the study groups. Additionally, saliva samples were obtained from the control group seven times over a 24-h period (20:00, 21:00, 01:00, 05:00, 08:00, 13:00 and 17:00?h). The cortisol data were analyzed by fast Fourier transformation to assess periodic characteristics and frequencies. Hierarchical linear modeling was further performed for the statistical analysis. Results: The cortisol rhythm analysis indicated a circadian rhythm pattern for only one premature infant, all others of the neonates showed no circadian or ultradian rhythm in cortisol. Cortisol level of the premature neonates was significantly higher during the first day of the study period at night-time (median: 17.1?nmol/L, IQR?=?9.7–24.4?nmol/L) than on days 7 (median: 9.6?nmol/L, IQR?=?4.7–14.6?nmol/L; Tukey-HSD, z?=?4.12, p?<?0.001) and 14 (IQR?=?5.8–13.7?nmol/L; Tukey-HSD, z?=?2.89, p?<?0.05). No significant effect of acoustic stimulation was observed on the cortisol concentration and sleep–wake behavior. The activity–sleep rhythm of preterm neonates was dominated by ultradian rhythm patterns with a prominent period length of 4?h (30.5%). Activity frequencies of neonates were also significantly higher overnight on the first study day (mean: 329?±?185.1?U) than of night seven (mean: 260.2?±?132.4?U; Tukey-HSD, z?=?2.50, p?<?0.05). Quiet-activity patterns increased, whereas high-activity patterns decreased during the observation period. Average sleep time increased significantly during the study time from day 1 to day 7 (Tukey-HSD, z?=?2.51, p?<?0.05). In conclusion, premature infants showed higher cortisol levels – without a circadian rhythmicity – and higher activity frequencies in the first days after birth which may reflect an adaptation process of neonates after birth. The circadian activity rhythm of the common marmoset, Callithrix j. jacchus was investigated by long-term recording of the locomotor activity of 15 individuals (5 males, 10 females) from 1.5 to 8 years old, both under constant illumination and under LD 12:12. The mean period of the spontaneous circadian rhythm was 23.2 ± 0.3 h. Neither sex-specific differences nor a systematic influence of light intensity on the spontaneous period were observed, but the period was dependent on the duration of the trial and on the age of the individual. Due to the short spontaneous period, in LD 12:12 there was a distinct advance of the activity phase with respect to the light time and a masking of the true onset of activity by the inhibitory direct effect of low light intensity during the dark time. After an 8 h delay shift of the LD 12:12, re-entrainment of the circadian activity rhythm required an average of 6.8 ± 0.7 days; the average re-entrainment time after an 8 h phase advance of the LD cycle was 8.6 ± 1.3 day. This directional effect is ascribed to characteristics of the phase-response curve. No ultradian components were observed, either in the LD-entrained or the free-running circadian activity rhythm.  相似文献

The locomotor activity rhythm of the sandhopper Talitrus saltator (Amphipoda Talitridae) was investigated in Madfoun beach. The rhythm was monitored in individual and group animals during 21 days at constant temperature. During the first two weeks, animals were kept under light–dark cycle (d1–d7) and constant darkness (d8–d14). Light pulses of 2 h were applied, at the end of the experimental night, during the first 3 days of the third week (d15–d18). Then, constant darkness was restored for the rest of the experiment (d19–d21). Results revealed that Talitrus saltator individuals as well as groups concentrated their activities in experimental night under light–dark cycle and in the presence of pulses; whereas, a clear drift of activity is observed under constant darkness. Periodogram analysis showed the presence of circadian component whatever the recording type. An ultradian period was revealed in individual recording whatever the regimen, while for groups, this component appeared only under nLD cycle. Furthermore, the locomotor rhythm is more defined under nLD cycle for individuals and in constant darkness for groups.  相似文献

Two hundred, one-day-old broiler chicks were divided into groups 1, 2 and 3 containing 60, 70 and 70 chicks, respectively. The groups were divided into subgroups of 10 chicks that were vaccinated according to the following scheme: group 1 unvaccinated control, group 2 vaccinated subcutaneously at 1 day old with inactivated oil adjuvant vaccine (IOAV) in combination with live B1 vaccine. Group 3 was vaccinated in the same mode as group 2 with IOAV and live Ulster 2C vaccine. All birds were challenged when they were 28 days old. Mortality rate, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were monitored before and after challenge. All the chickens in group 1 died, indicating that there was no disease resistance of this unvaccinated control group of chickens. Conversely, the monitored disease resistance of chickens in groups 2 and 3 was 68.57% ± 18.64 and 88.57% ± 9.00, respectively (P < 0.05). The morbidity of chickens in groups 2 and 3 was 37.89% ± 14.36 and 14.76% ± 12.40, respectively (P < 0.05). The body weight gain, feed intake and FCR of group 3 were significantly better than those of group 2 (P < 0.05) during 1–42 days old. The simultaneous vaccination with B1 or Ulster 2C and IOAV of 1-day-old chicks gave some protection of 28-day-old broilers without a booster vaccination.  相似文献

The activities of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), glutamine synthetase (GS), and nitrate reductase (NR) and the levels of soluble protein and NO-3 were assayed in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) leaves over a 48-h period with the initial 24 h under a light-dark cycle (LD 16:8) followed by 24 h of continuous light (LL). Plants had been entrained for 30 days under the LD regime. Maize (Zea mays) leaves (10 days old) under a LD 15:9 cycle were assayed only for NR and nitrite reductase (NiR). Data were subjected to frequency analysis by the least squares method to determine probabilities for cosine function periods (τ's) between 10 and 30 h. NR activities for both soybean and Zea leaves had 24 h τ's with P values < 0.05 indicating circadian periodicity. GDH in soybeans had a 24-h rhythm under LD conditions which lengthened under LL conditions. The 24-h rhythm of GDH displayed maximal activity toward the end of the dark period of the LD cycle whereas the highest activity of NR was early in the light period. Total soluble protein displayed a rhythm with a best fitting τ of greater than 24 h under both LD and LL. GDH, GS, NR, NO3, and soluble protein in soybeans and NiR in Zea, all displayed that were ultradian (10–18 h), indicating that a τ of about one half a circadian periodicity may be a common characteristic of the enzymes of primary nitrogen metabolism in higher plants. These data also demonstrate that although both NR and GDH are circadian in their activity, the 24-h rhythm may be greatly influenced by ultradian oscillations in activity.  相似文献

Patterns of circadian and ultradian rhythms in the heart rate(HR) are described in a full-term baby with birth asphyxia and convulsions.A 24h HR recording was carried out at the age of 1, 15, 56, 289, and 295 days;West syndrome diagnosis was made when the patient was 3 months old. The HRshowed no circadian rhythm in the follow-up, whereas it is known that thecircadian rhythm appears in healthy infants at the age of 1 month and remainsthereafter. Abstract

Activity data from two experimental lizard groups were analysed in order to search for 24 h‐entrained and ultradian periodicities. The data of a first group were obtained through motion sensitive platforms situated under the animals’ cage and continuously for up to 12 consecutive days; those from a second group were collected by manual recording of the behaviour patterns of individual animals for 2 h each day over a 10‐day period. Lizards from both groups were situated in cages inside isolated chambers in which a light‐dark cycle (12:12), a temperature of 28°C ±1° and a relative humidity of 50–60% were maintained. Periodogram analysis showed the existence of a significant period peak (p < 0.01) at 24 h. Autocorrelation functions and spectral analysis of different data‐segment lengths showed that ultradian periodicities were present in the daily motor activity, appearing as noisy though frequency‐band limited. Differences in the frequency band‐limited fluctuations were found between morning and afternoon activities: during the morning ultradian activity appears distributed in two bands (4.5–36 c/day and 63–94 c/day), the power being mainly concentrated in the second one, while during the afternoon it was in the 4.5–36 c/day band. Results from the second lizard group showed only one band (24–60 c/day) overlapped with the first one from the latter group. Although activity recording methods and some experimental conditions are discussed as possible sources of these differences, the possibility of endogenous ultradian variation within the individuals is also suggested.  相似文献

  • 6.6. Our results support the idea that the ERG circadian rhythm results from the coupling among high frequency (ultradian) oscillators, particularly those of 4 hr periods and that the coupling depends on the action of neurosecretions released from the sinus gland.

The locomotor activity of the millipede Glyphiulus cavernicolus (Spirostreptida), which occupies the deeper recesses of a cave, was monitored in light-dark (LD) cycles (12h light and 12h darkness), constant darkness (DD), and constant light (LL) conditions. These millipedes live inside the cave and are apparently never exposed to any periodic factors of the environment such as light-dark, temperature, and humidity cycles. The activity of a considerable fraction of these millipedes was found to show circadian rhythm, which entrained to a 12:12 LD cycle with maximum activity during the dark phase of the LD cycle. Under constant darkness (DD), 56.5% of the millipedes (n = 23) showed circadian rhythms, with average free-running period of 25.7h ± 3.3h (mean ± SD, range 22.3h to 35.0h). The remaining 43.5% of the millipedes, however, did not show any clear-cut rhythm. Under DD conditions following an exposure to LD cycles, 66.7% (n = 9) showed faint circadian rhythm, with average free-running period of 24.0h ± 0.8h (mean ± SD, range 22.9h to 25.2h). Under constant light (LL) conditions, only 2 millipedes of 11 showed free-running rhythms, with average period length of 33.3h ± 1.3h. The results suggest that these cave-dwelling millipedes still possess the capacity to measure time and respond to light and dark situations. A clutch of young chicks housed with a mother hen exhibit ultradian (within day) rhythms of activity corresponding to the brooding cycle of the hen. In the present study clear evidence was found of ultradian activity rhythms in newly hatched domestic chicks housed in groups larger than natural clutch size without a mother hen or any other obvious external time-keeper. No consistent synchrony was found between groups housed in different pens within the same room. The ultradian rhythms disappeared with time and little evidence of group rhythmicity remained by the third night. This disappearance over time suggests that the presence of a mother hen may be pivotal for the long-term maintenance of these rhythms. The ultradian rhythm of the chicks may also play an important role in the initiation of brooding cycles during the behavioural transition of the mother hen from incubation to brooding. Computer simulations of individual activity rhythms were found to reproduce the observations made on a group basis. This was achievable even when individual chick rhythms were modelled as independent of each other, thus no assumptions of social facilitation are necessary to obtain ultradian activity rhythms on a group level.  相似文献

Studies on the breeding biology of Puffinus puffinus were carried out in 1963 and 1964 at the large colony on Skokholm, Wales. During the six weeks before laying the birds spent up to a quarter of the days in the burrows, but the ten days immediately prior to laying were normally spent at sea. There is a prolonged laying period, with a marked peak in the first half of May. Details are given of a second egg being laid when the first was deserted immediately after being laid. The male took the first incubation spell. The incubation spells ranged from one to 26 days and averaged six. The incubation period was about 51 days. The frequency of visits to land by breeding birds, unlike those by non-breeders, was not affected by the moon. On hatching, the chicks grew rapidly and reached maximum weights of between 505 and 755 gm. sometime between 39 and 61 days. There was a variable desertion period, usually eight or nine days, before the chicks left the island about 70 days after hatching. During the feeding period the chick received about two feeds every three days. There is evidence that adults visited the chicks more frequently than this. There was no correlation between growth of the chicks, their feeding rates or fledging weights and the time of laying. There was a high survival (about 95 %) of chicks during the fledging period but some eggs were lost in disputes for burrows. Nine pairs in 1964 were unable to raise two young simultaneously. Parents altered their feeding rhythms to try to feed two young but did not themselves lose weight. It is suggested that the critical factor in the production of young is the availability of food for the young immediately after they leave the colonies.  相似文献

Animal population dynamics can be driven by rainfall variability through its influence on habitat suitability, availability and nutritional sufficiency of forage. To understand how rainfall influences ostriches, we related changes in ostrich recruitment in the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem to rainfall. Over a 15-year period, monthly counts of ostriches were made and the number of hatchlings, chicks, hens, cocks, and the size of the groups in which they occurred were recorded. Breeding was bimodal with a major peak in February and a minor peak in October. Ostriches formed larger groups in the wet (4.41 ± 5.17 (mean ± SD), range 1–72, n = 672 groups) than in the dry (2.49 ± 2.70, range 1–29, n = 398) season. The number of hatchlings plus chicks per hen increased across the duration of the study period and with increasing annual and early wet-season rainfall, affecting forage availability and quality. Recruitment was highest at intermediate levels of the five-year average of the late wet-season rainfall, implying that a change in long-term rainfall and habitat suitability would move recruitment away from the optimum. Outstanding adaptations to life in arid environments could make ostriches more resilient than sympatric ungulates if food shortages and water stress became more frequent because of widening climatic variability.  相似文献

Abstract

By means of a microcomputer‐assisted, electronic recording system five physiological, circadian rhythms of the rabbit were monitored: locomotor activity, hard faeces excretion, food intake, urine excretion and water intake.

During 120 days of continuous light conditions (30 lx) the animals exhibited a free‐running circadian rhythm. After the fading out of aftereffects of the preceding light: dark schedule on day 51 ± 11 the animals ran free with an individually distinct period length of > 24.0 h (τ: 24.48 ± 0.10 (SD) h). Spectral analysis of coherent data of 50–84 days showed that in addition to the circadian period persistent ultradian periods of 6.1, 8.2 and 12.3 h were present. Within each individual the five functions proved to be tightly coupled during the free‐run, during the time of reentrainment and when entrained with the LD 12:12. While during LD 12:12 the animals exhibited a bimodal rhythm, during the free‐run the rhythm was unimodal in all five functions. In one animal a “splitting”; of the free‐running period occurred. Both components ran free with different period length. They fused again after 38 days. The “splitting”; was reflected in all five functions of this animal.

The behavioural characteristics of meal duration and ‐frequency, duration of activity and ‐intervals, of water intake and urination did not show significant differences during the conditions of LD 12:12 and LL.

The results support Pittendrigh's model of two systems of oscillators, selectively susceptible to the transitions of dark : light and light : dark. Our results suggest that in the rabbit the five functions are governed in common by both oscillator‐systems.  相似文献

Responses of biota to climate change take a number of forms including distributional shifts, behavioural changes and life history changes. This study examined an extensive set of biological records to investigate changes in the timing of life history transitions (specifically emergence) in British Odonata between 1960 and 2004. The results show that there has been a significant, consistent advance in phenology in the taxon as a whole over the period of warming that is mediated by life history traits. British odonates significantly advanced the leading edge (first quartile date) of the flight period by a mean of 1.51 ±0.060 (SEM, n=17) days per decade or 3.08±1.16 (SEM, n=17) days per degree rise in temperature when phylogeny is controlled for. This study represents the first review of changes in odonate phenology in relation to climate change. The results suggest that the damped temperature oscillations experienced by aquatic organisms compared with terrestrial organisms are sufficient to evoke phenological responses similar to those of purely terrestrial taxa.  相似文献

Although the effects of aerobic exercise on resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and blood pressure have been investigated, there are scant data on the effects of aerobic exercise on the circadian rhythm of such cardiovascular parameters. In this study, we investigated the effects of aerobic exercise on the 24?h rhythm of heart rate and ambulatory blood pressure in the morning, when cardiovascular events are more common. Thirty-five healthy young subjects were randomized to control and aerobic exercise groups. Subjects in the latter group participated in their respective exercise program for two months, while those in the former group did not exercise. Twenty-four-hour electrocardiogram and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring data were obtained at baseline and at the end of the exercise intervention. The control group showed no changes, while the aerobic exercise group showed a significant decrease in heart rate (73.7?±?6.6?bpm to 69.5?±?5.1?bpm, p?<?0.005) and sympathetic activity such as LF/HF ratio (2.0?±?0.7 to 1.8?±?0.6, p?<?0.05) throughout the 24?h period, particularly in the daytime. The decrease in the heart rate was most prominent in the morning. However, heart rate and LF/HF ratio showed no statistical changes during the night. No significant changes were observed in blood pressure. These findings suggest aerobic exercise exerts beneficial effects on the circadian rhythm of heart rate, especially in the morning. The aim of our study was to evaluate the parasite — host interactions at apoptosis level. We studied histopathological changes and time course of apoptosis in the duodenum during Eimeria acervulina infection. One-day-old broiler chicks were randomly allocated into two equal groups. At the age of two weeks the first group was experimentally infected with a pure suspension of sporulated E. acervulina oocysts. The second group served as a negative control. Tissue samples from the upper part of duodenum were obtained at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days post infection. Biopsies of duodenum were studied immunohistochemically using DeadEnd™ Colometric TUNEL System for apoptosis detection in duodenal mucosa. Number of parasites in duodenal epithelium was also investigated. Our experimental results demonstrate: (i) macroscopic and histopathological changes in epithelium detected mainly in proximal segment of duodenum in infected groups; (ii) the number of developmental stages of E. acervulina (DSEA) during our trial increased, reaching the maximum 5 days post infection (dpi) (332.2 ± 16.12) (mean ± SEM), whereas the amount of DSEA declined significantly as late as 6 dpi (124.6 ± 3.91); (iii) the highest apoptosis level was recorded in initiatory 0.5 dpi (13.2 ± 1.02) and on the end of parasite development cycle after 5 dpi (12.6 ± 1.36). Finally, results showed that there was a period of inhibition of apoptosis during infection by E. acervulina.  相似文献
