Hokkaido Island is located in the cool temperate zone, and its climate conditions facilitated the formation of a variety of wetland types, the majority of them peat-forming mires. Most of these remained in a natural state until the early 20th century. However, drainage and subsequent conversion mostly to agricultural land have since destroyed more than 70% of the original wetland ecosystems. This paper (1) provides an overview of mire types, (2) reviews the development process of mires in Hokkaido during the Holocene, (3) analyzes the causes of losses of wetland areas, and (4) gives a summary of the current conservation and management status. Basic mire types that have been described in other parts of the northern hemisphere can also be recognized in Hokkaido, although there are floristic differences, and the frequency and intensity of volcanic impact and tsunamis is higher than in most other regions with abundant mire formation. Mire formation started at various points during the postglacial period; a few mountain mires in southwest Hokkaido date back to the Lateglacial, but most mountain mires formed during the mid to late Holocene. Most lowland mires developed at altitudes below 20 m and were influenced by the Jomon transgression that peaked ca. 6,000 years BP. The largest lowland mires started forming after the sea retreated, and many are not older than ca. 3,000 years. In 1996, the total number of wetlands (including peat-forming mires, freshwater marshes, and saltmarshes) greater than 1 ha was 150, with a total area of 59,881 ha. In 1928, when many wetlands were yet undeveloped, their total area was 200,642 ha. Most losses occurred between the 1950s and 1970s, when post-war development economics promoted agriculture and large-scale reclamation projects. Currently, 90.7% of mountain wetlands are public land, while 81.3% of the lowland wetlands are private or in mixed ownership. The ownership condition affects the possibilities for the protection of complete mire complexes especially in the lowlands. For effective conservation of wetland ecosystems it is necessary to include the catchment area in the planning of protected areas.  相似文献

Synopsis The behaviour and ecology of lake charr Salvelinus namaycush, brook charr S. fontinalis, and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, are reviewed to assess the susceptibility of these species to mortality from exposure to episodic pH depressions and accompanying changes in water quality. Critical life history periods are identified from an examination of: spawning site characteristics, timing of acidic pulses, changes in the sensitivity of developing fish to acidic water, and the ability of these species to detect and avoid deleterious chemical conditions. The three species appeared to be most vulnerable to pH depressions during Snowmelt as: alevins emerging from the redd (brook charr); free embryos in the interstitial spaces of the spawning rubble (lake charr); and embryos during hatching and juveniles during smoltification (Atlantic salmon). Factors that may modify the toxic effects of or the behavioural responses to low pH included: water temperature, acclimation and body energy reserves. The effect of site-specific or episodic mortality of early life history stages on recruitment to the population could not be evaluated due to the lack of information on compensatory mechanisms.  相似文献

The Bonin Islands, Japan, present a unique and endemic fauna and flora, however a large portion of these species, including fungi, are now considered endangered or extinct. During almost 80 y Cyathus badius was included in that statistics and no additional collections were recorded until a new expedition in 2015. Morphological comparisons with the holotype are consistent with the new specimen, and phylogenetic analyses based on ribosomal ITS, LSU and concatenated dataset placed C. badius in a highly supported clade with C. parvocinereus. Is proposed here to epitypify C. badius with illustrations, new morphological characters and DNA data.  相似文献

As bald eagle populations recover, defining major sources of mortality provides managers important information to develop management plans and mitigation efforts. We obtained data from necropsies on 1,490 dead bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) collected in Michigan, USA, conducted from 1986 to 2017 to determine causes of death (COD). Trauma and poisoning were the most common primary COD categories, followed by disease. Within trauma and poisoning, vehicular trauma (n = 532) and lead poisoning (n = 176) were the leading COD subcategories, respectively. Females comprised a greater number of carcasses for most COD diagnoses. The proportion of trauma and poisoning CODs significantly increased in the last few years of the study in comparison to a select few years at the beginning. Trauma CODs were greater in autumn months during whitetail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) breeding and hunting seasons and in February, when aquatic foraging is unavailable and eagles are likely forced to scavenge along roadsides. Poisoning CODs were greatest in late winter and early spring months, when deer carcasses containing lead ammunition, which are preserved by the cold weather, also become a supplemental food source. The major infectious disease CODs, West Nile virus and botulism (Clostridium botulinum type E), were more prevalent during summer months. We recommend moving road-killed carcasses, especially white-tailed deer, from the main thoroughfare to the back of the right-of-way, and the transition from lead ammunition and fishing tackle to non-toxic alternatives to decrease these main anthropogenic sources of mortality for bald eagles, and other scavenger species. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The widespread lycaenid butterfly Tongeia fischeri is distributed from eastern Europe to northeastern Asia and represented by three geographically isolated populations in Japan. In order to clarify the phylogeographic history of the species, we used sequences of three mitochondrial (COI, Cyt b and ND5) and two nuclear (Rpl5 and Ldh) genes of 207 individuals collected from 55 sites throughout Japan and five sites on the Asian continent. Phylogenetic trees and the median-joining network revealed six evolutionary mitochondrial haplotype clades, which corresponded to the geographic distribution of the species. Common ancestors of Japanese T. fischeri might have come to Japan during the mid-Pleistocene by multiple dispersals of continental populations, probably via a land bridge or narrow channel between western Japan and the Korean Peninsula. The geographical patterns of variation of mitochondrial and nuclear markers are discordant in northeastern Kyushu, possibly as a result of introgressive hybridization during the ancient contact between the Kyushu and Shikoku populations in the last glacial maximum. The phylogeographic pattern of T. fischeri in Japan are probably related to the geological history, Pleistocene climatic oscillations and distribution of the host plant.  相似文献

The effect of the Razdol’naya River on the littoral and sublittoral nematode community was studied in the innermost part of the Amursky Bay. Thanks to the seasonal abundance of juveniles of macrobenthic animals, pseudomacrobenthic species prevailed in the meiobenthos littoral community. Juvenile amphipods dominated (39.5%), the percentage of nematodes was 18.4% (45 species). The nematodes dominated in the meiobenthos community (65.7%, 71 species) at the sublittoral zone. The similarity of the species structure of littoral and sublittoral nematodes reached 36.5%. Low population density (2.6±1.7 thousand ind/m2) and poor species diversity of nematodes (7 species), the dominating form being Oncholaimium paraolium, were recorded at the littoral zone, which was subjected to direct riverine influence (1‰salinity). The correlation analysis revealed no relationship between salinity and population density of nematodes at the littoral zone. At the sublittoral zone (at stations of salinity less than 2.85‰) the parameters of population density (73.9±32.3 thousand ind/m2) and species diversity (12 species) of nematodes were the lowest, Parodontophora timmica dominated. A poor expressed dependence between the density of nematode populations and salinity was revealed. The correlation between the average size of ground particles and population density of nematodes was recorded. The greatest similarity of the species structure of littoral and sublittoral nematodes (26.67%) was recorded on gravel-sand bottoms.  相似文献

Although quantitative data on interspecific interactions within complex food webs are essential for evaluation of assumptions, hypotheses, and predictions of ecological theories; empirical studies yielding quantitative data on complex food webs are very limited. Ecological information on body size, habitat use, and seasonality of the component species of food webs aids in determining the mechanisms of food web structures. Ideally, ecological information on component species should be obtained contemporaneously when used to describe quantitative food webs, but such observations and sampling strategies are labor intensive and thus have been rarely described. We conducted year-round samplings of, and performed observations on, a temperate stream: the upper reaches of the Yura River, Kyoto, Japan. We derived quantitative data on the abundance, biomass, body mass, microhabitat use, and those seasonality of 7 fish species and 167 invertebrate taxa of the temperate stream food web. In addition, we estimated the per mass consumption rates of 7 predatory fish species, consuming 183 prey invertebrates, and the ratios between the per mass consumption rates of the 7 predatory fish species and the production rates of 78 prey invertebrates in each trophic link. All fishes and aquatic invertebrates were identified to species or lowest possible taxon. Our data may contribute to the construction of mathematical models explaining the behavior of stream communities/ecosystems.  相似文献

Histoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by inhaling spores of the fungal pathogen H. capsulatum and in Japan is considered an imported mycosis. However, some patients in Japan with histoplasmosis have no history of traveling overseas nor of risk of occupational exposure to Histoplasma. To investigate the possibility of native distribution of Histoplasma in Japan, 187 bat guano samples from 67 bat‐inhabited caves in 17 prefectures were collected. These were examined for H. capsulatum by culture and Histoplasma‐specific PCR in three independent laboratories. No H. capsulatum was detected by either method, therefore H. capsulatum is unlikely to be present in bat guano in Japanese caves.  相似文献

The paper reviews the history of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour in its 50th anniversary year. Having discussed the founding of the Institute for the Study of Animal Behaviour in 1936, the paper establishes its principal aims, follows its fortunes before and during the war, traces its role in the expansion and institutionalization of ethology in Britainbetween 1945 and 1950, and summarizes its transformation into a flourishing scientific society in the 1950s and 1960s. It is concluded that the history of the Association is, to a striking extent, a microcosm of the making of ethology as a successful scientific discipline.  相似文献
