Dabbling ducks are important quarry species, and as a result, they are relatively well studied. Over the last century, considerable
effort has been made to describe their diet and food requirements. In this review, we compile present knowledge about the
diet of four widespread dabbling ducks (wigeon, pintail, mallard and teal) in the Western Palearctic. Previous diet research
has a spatio-temporal bias towards autumn/winter and the western parts of Europe. The limited number of studies from the breeding
season reveals an increase in invertebrates in the diet compared to other seasons, but with some differences between adults
and ducklings. Adult ducks eat a larger proportion of benthic invertebrates, whereas ducklings feed relatively more on emerging
invertebrates. The most important plant species (seeds) based on frequency occurrence was found to vary with a geographic
gradient. Carex spp., Hordeum vulgare and Hippuris vulgaris are common in the diet of birds at northern latitudes, whereas taxa such as Oryza sativa, Potamogeton pectinatus and Scirpus spp. are common in the south. The reviewed studies are based on the contents of different parts of the digestive system and
on a variety of methods to quantify food items. The variations in sampling techniques and shortage of articles from the breeding
season and some geographic regions highlight the need for future studies. In the future, it is important to standardize sampling
techniques to improve the possibility to compare studies and to obtain a more representative view of the diet of dabbling
ducks in Europe. 相似文献

Body mass changes in wintering ducks have been considered as the consequence of their wintering strategy, i.e. low mass after autumn migration, active foraging leading to body mass restoration, then pairing leading to low body mass again. This pattern is supported by weights of hunter-killed birds, but this is not enough to rule out potential alternative hypotheses linked to the existence of different populations with different body masses. The use of data collected at ringing and subsequent recaptures of known birds demonstrates that teal ( Anas crecca) gain and lose body mass from September to March. 相似文献

We use a new method called “product kernel estimator” to explore the spatial and temporal distribution of 9,114 recoveries
of Teal ( Anas crecca) ringed in Camargue, southern France, and recovered over the whole of Europe. This method allows exploration of the changes
in time of the probability density to recover a ringed bird over a grid covering the study area. We thus identified two migration
corridors for this species to the north and south of the Alps, whereas earlier analyses mostly suggested a southern route
from Camargue, especially in spring. The northern route seems to be used to a greater extent in autumn than in spring, indicating
a frequent abmigration (animals switching from one corridor to the other). Moreover, migration of the population seems faster
in spring than in autumn. The simultaneous presence of Teal recoveries in many distinct geographical areas in spring is consistent
with the idea that these ducks are not limited by their migratory speed in spring, nor do they wait until favorable environmental
conditions before colonizing their breeding areas. 相似文献

The temporal and spatial patterns of rat abundance variations were studied, and which factors might affect these patterns in poultry farms. Forty-eight poultry farms were sampled from spring 1999 to winter 2001 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Environmental variables of farms, meteorological variables and distances among farms were registered to evaluate a possible association with rat abundance estimated by trap success. Rattus norvegicus was the dominant rat species in the study area. Rat abundance did not vary temporally and there was reproduction at all times. Trap success was more similar among neighboured farms than among farms further apart. Contrary to the abundance of other small rodents, rat abundance was not significantly related to farm characteristics. The lack of coincidence between rats and other small rodents suggests the existence of a differential response of rats to environmental factors of the poultry farms. 相似文献

Summary Relative abundance of natural food resource, leaves of wild rose, of Arge migrinodosa was evaluated by comparing the food quantity which the larvae composing a colony utilized throughout the larval stage with that which is available in the habitat. In this connection, behavioral pattern of larval feeding was also observed under natural conditions, and its ecological significance was discussed. It was quantitatively clarified that the larvae faced the severe shortage of food and had to disperse to other shoots with the expense of probably high risk. Under pressures of such insufficient supply of food, the larvae follow the most efficient pattern of feeding behavior that they move to the tip of shoot at first and feed regularly downward thereafter. Though individual larvae behaved completely independently of each other, the aggregation appeared to be formed and maintained because all the larvae from the same egg mass follow this fixed feeding pattern. 相似文献

The question of why hunters target large game knowing that most of the meat will end up far beyond their own hearths is an intriguing one. It raises the issue of whether foragers pursue nonnutritional goals in food procurement and which goals they pursue. Here, I will use data from studies that have been carried out over a 34-year period among the Ju/'hoansi (!Kung Bushmen) to evaluate four hypotheses concerning why foragers target large game: reciprocity, costly signaling, nepotism, and long-term political goals aimed at bringing about conditions conducive to cooperative breeding. I will propose on the basis of qualitative and quantitative data that (1) all four hypotheses identify benefits that are gained by Ju/'hoansi through producing and distributing a surplus of meat, (2) different benefits might be important at different stages of a man's life, and (3) the pursuit of broader political goals merits serious consideration in accounting for men's work effort. 相似文献

Most species of long-distance migratory birds put on energy stores to fuel their travels. However, recent studies have highlighted the potential costs associated with carrying too much fuel, either through increased predation risk or decreased flight efficiency. Consequently, it is now widely accepted that migratory birds should carry optimal rather than maximum fuel loads. Information from 372 garganey ( Anas querquedula) ringed and recaptured at least once during the same spring in the Camargue, southern France, was used to document fuelling rates of individual ducks in relation to environmental variation and individual variation in condition. On average, garganey added very little fuel stores in the Camargue (mean gain per day=0.33 g, less than 0.5% of mean body-mass in total over an average stay of 5 days). Fuelling rates were negatively correlated with body mass at capture, but it cannot be excluded that this pattern was a statistical artefact. Given their body-mass at ringing, garganey could potentially still fly long distances when they stop in the Camargue. It is therefore likely that the aim of their stay in southern France is more for resting than refuelling, a finding that may have implications for the proper management of stop-over sites.Communicated by F. Eleotrid larvae (2.1–16 mm) were collected from surface waters of a billabong in south-eastern Australia. Estimates of larval density in plankton net samples at night averaged 148.3 larvae per m 3 and 16.6 larvae per m 3 during the day. In contrast, pump samples provided density estimates of 8.3 larvae per m 3 at night and 0.9 larvae per m 3 during the day. Larval densities did not differ between open water, snag (fallen tree) and Typha habitats, but Typha habitats yielded larger larvae than other habitats. 32.9% of larvae in pump samples were damaged and unmeasurable, creating a bias favouring larger larvae. The modal length of larvae in net samples at night was 5–6 mm, compared with 3–4 mm during the day, reflecting both greater net avoidance by larger larvae during the daytime and dispersal of smaller larvae from the surface at night. Dispersion patterns of larvae suggest that classes of larvae smaller than, and larger than 5.0 mm exhibit reciprocal diel vertical migration behaviour linked to ontogenetic changes in diet. Larvae less than 5 mm fed only during the day and preyed exclusively on rotifers, whereas larger larvae continued to feed at night and consumed mostly planktonic crustaceans. 相似文献

Long-distance migrants are, by definition, highly mobile but it is poorly understood if this leads to high rates of gene flow and an essentially panmictic global population structure. Genetic divergence in migratory species could be promoted, for example, by fidelity to distinct migratory pathways. In this study, we investigate the population genetic structure of tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), a long-distance migrant with a largely continuous breeding distribution across Eurasia. Distinct, longitudinally oriented flyways have been postulated based on geographically disjunct wintering areas and are supported by evidence from ringing data. We generated sequences of the mitochondrial control region and multi-locus microsatellite genotypes for several hundreds of samples from the European and Asian breeding and wintering grounds including some individuals infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1. Significant differentiation between breeding sites was observed for both marker types, but F(ST) values were approximately 10 times higher for maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA than for biparentally transmitted nuclear markers. The genetic differentiation between the postulated European and Asian flyways was similar to that observed within continents and, in general, genetic divergence was not associated with geographic distance. Neither marker type showed evidence of genetic substructure among aggregations on the European wintering grounds. Our results suggest some breeding site fidelity, especially in females, but extensive population admixture on the wintering grounds. Several scenarios may explain the observed lack of genetic divergence between Europe and Asia including non-equilibrium conditions following a recent range expansion or contemporary gene flow across the postulated migratory divides. 相似文献

This paper examines the relevance of intermediate disturbance theory in the context of in a large river the algal flora attaching to artificial substrata. It was observed that the theory is in good agreement with most of the communities analysed, however, with different frequency intervals compared to phytoplankton. Floods provided the most significant disturbances. As a rough generalization, we can say that in case of floods following each other in 8–14 days, respectively, the disturbance is of medium frequency. In case of 8 days, high frequency is more typical while in case of 14 days, low frequency is more characteristic. Owing to the fact that riverine periphytic algal organisms are attached in different ways and with differing efficiencies, the changes in the total mass occurring as a result of changes in water discharge lead to changes in diversity. The analysis of individual numbers can help in investigating the intensity of the disturbing effect on the algal communities. Negative correlation was found between water discharge and numbers of individuals, that is, the numbers of algae increase with low water discharge and decrease with high water level in the river. This second observation is valid only within a certain range of discharges (in this case up to 100 m 3 s –1), which will be specific to particular rivers and individual reaches. Below the upper limit of the range, the increased water flows carry more nutrients to the organisms but with no severe wash-off effect. Beyond the upper limit (in this case in range 100–400 m 3 s –1) the numbers of individuals is roughly in inverse proportion to the wash-off effect of the current, and the community is in equilibrium. In cases when discharge surpasses 400 m 3 s –1 decrease in individual numbers is general. We suggest that in the environments similar to the study area, the periphyton of the artificial substrata (e.g., pontoons) undergo similar processes. In respect of the periphyton formed on the surface of the riverbeds in large rivers with considerable changes in water level, a more complex system can be supposed where part of the periphyton is periodically dried and flooded alternately. 相似文献

Knots Calidris canutus live highly seasonal lives, breeding solitarily on high arctic tundra and spending the non-breeding season in large social flocks in temperate to tropical estuaries. Their reproductive activities and physiological preparations for long flights are reflected in pronounced plumage and body mass changes, even in long-term captives of the islandica subspecies (breeding in north Greenland and northeast Canada and wintering in western Europe) studied in outdoor aviaries. The three to four fattening episodes in April-July in connection with the flights to and from the high arctic breeding grounds by free-living birds, are represented by a single period of high body mass, peaking between late May and early July in a sample of ten captive islandica knots studied over four years. There are consistent and synchronized annual variations in basal metabolic rate and thermal conductance in three islandica knots. Basal metabolic rate was highest during the summer body mass peak. Within the examined individuals, basal metabolic rate scales on body mass with an exponent of about 1.4, probably reflecting a general hypertrophy of metabolically expensive muscles and organs. Any potential effect of moult on basal metabolic rate was obscured by the large seasonal mass-associated variations. In breeding plumage, insulation (the inverse of thermal conductance) was a factor of 1.35 lower than in winter plumage. This was paralleled by the dry mass of contour feathers being a factor of 1.17 lower. In this subspecies the breeding season is indeed the period during which the costs of thermoregulation are lowest. In captive knots seasonal changes in basal metabolic rate and thermal conductance likely reflect an anticipatory programme adaptive to the variable demands made by the environment at different times of the year. 相似文献

Pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. (Leguminosae) was found as a novel food plant of the neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), in Paraná State, Brazil. Laboratory studies indicated nymphs performing better when fed on immature pods of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill (Leguminosae), than on immature pods of pigeonpea. Female nymphs required 1.7 d less to complete development and tended to have a lower mortality on soybean (17.5%) than on pigeonpea (25.0%). At emergence, fresh body weight was greater on soybean than on pigeonpea. Adult E. heros performed better on soybean than on pigeonpea. After 120 d, 35% of adults were alive on soybean and 30% on pigeonpea; 93.3% of females oviposited on soybean, and 73.3% on pigeonpea, with an oviposition delay of 17 days on pigeonpea compared to soybean. Fecundity was 63% greater on soybean than on pigeonpea, and adult body weight gain for females and males at different ages was 6–36% greater on soybean than on pigeonpea. E. heros colonized soybean during January–March, from the pod-setting and filling stages (R3–R6) to maturity (R7–R8), and pigeonpea during April–June. These results indicate that E. heros has expanded its host range to pigeonpea in Brazil; pods of this plant are suitable food, and can support the insect during autumn-early winter, after soybean harvest, and before it enters into partial hibernation. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the five species of Schilbeidae in Lake Kainji were studied. The gill net samples showed that Eutropius niloticus was the most abundant and very common species in the lake. Physailia pellucida although greatly under-estimated by the gill nets was the next abundant and fairly common species. Schilbe mystus was not as abundant as the two previous species but was found to be common. Schilbe uranoscopus and Siluranodon auritus were very rare in the Lake. The spatial distribution showed that E. niloticus and P. pellucida occurred in high numbers in the open lake and the shorelines, while S. mystus had its highest number in the riverine areas of the Lake. An upward trend in the abundance of E. niloticus and P. pellucida was indicated while a decrease in the abundance of S. mystus within the lake was noted. 相似文献

Impoundment of rivers affects the mayfly (Ephemeroptera) fauna inhabiting such water bodies, especially with respect to their distribution and abundance. A two‐year study of the mayfly fauna and some of the physicochemical parameters of the Opa stream–reservoir revealed that there are two mayfly genera inhabiting it, Cloeon and Caenis. The number of Cloeon larvae collected was 10,930 while the number of Caenis larvae was 450. It was observed that although both genera occurred at all the sampling stations, their numbers were reduced in the stream below the dam due to increased water current velocity. There were significant differences in the abundance of Cloeon among the stations, but none for Caenis. Submerged aquatic plants and water current velocity were found to be the major factors responsible for the significant differences. There were significant correlations between the number of Cloeon larvae and pH as well as between dissolved oxygen concentration and Caenis. These findings are discussed with reference to inter‐specific differences in patterns of response to environmental parameters. A species‐specific approach is suggested for studies on the strategies that enable mayfly species maintain their populations in stressed and unstable aquatic ecosystems. 相似文献

Harpacticoid copepods are known as important grazers on primary producers. The underlying factors for their food selectivity and grazing efficiency are however far from well known. For instance, their patchy distribution in the marine environment is well documented but how meiofaunal organisms cope with the spatial distribution/accessibility of the available food resources is less clear. In the present study a laboratory experiment was conducted to test the grazing efficiency of Paramphiascella fulvofasciata (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) on the epipelic diatom Seminavis robusta applied in recipients of different area and in various concentrations. Diatoms were enriched in the stable isotope 13C in order to trace food uptake and copepods were left to graze for 4 days.We found that the grazing efficiency of P. fulvofasciata was diatom concentration-dependent. A lower diatom uptake at lower diatom densities illustrated this clear functional response. On the contrary, there was no significant effect of the area per se where the copepods could graze upon. The lack of a significant effect of area is mainly due to the high variability in uptake that was recorded in some treatments. Although P. fulvofasciata is a very motile copepod, known as endobenthic and epibenthic species, it was able to concentrate on food uptake at the bottom of the experimental unit as there was no significant difference in uptake between treatments with different water heights in the units. In addition, it was found that a diatom concentration of about 140 000 cells/cm 2 favours egg production of P. fulvofasciata. 相似文献

We characterized the diet of the Indian fox ( Vulpes bengalensis) during the breeding season in a semi-desert region of Western India. Diet was estimated using scat analysis. We used Index of Relative Importance (IRI) to determine the contribution of prey items in the diet of the Indian fox.Indian foxes were observed to feed on a wide variety of prey items. Arthropods were the most frequently occurring prey in their diet. IRI scores were highest for the group Coleoptera and Orthoptera followed by rodents, termites, Ziziphus fruits and spiny tailed lizards ( Uromastyx hardwickii). IRI scores for rodents were higher for pups, differing significantly from proportions present in adult diet, thus indicating that they are crucial food items for the young ones. Prey proportions in the fox diet differed between the two habitats in the study area (grassland and scrubland). Our data suggest that the Indian fox is essentially an omnivore showing similar diet (in terms of high incidence of arthropods) to foxes inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions. The opportunistic and generalist strategy has probably helped the species to survive in varied habitats across the Indian subcontinent. 相似文献

Enclosure and exclosure experiments were conducted in Canary Creek marsh to examine how predation by a killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus (L.), affects the abundance and size distribution of the salt marsh snail, Melampus bidentatus (Say). Enclosures (7.6 × 19.7 m) were stocked with Fundulus heteroclitus at densities of one-half normal, normal, twice normal, and four times normal density. Fish exclusion pens were also built. In both years of study, the mean density of snails increased significantly in pens where fish were excluded or their density reduced. During the same period in each year, the density of snails in pens containing higher than normal fish density fell by ≈50%. Fish density also affected the size distribution of snails within pens. In both years, mean shell length of snails in the pen with the highest density of fish was significantly greater, and mean shell length of snails within fish exclusion pens was significantly lower than in all other treatments. Gape size limitation of F. heteroclitus causes selective predation on small snails and apparently is responsible for the difference in mean shell length among treatments. Density and size distribution measurements of the natural Melampus bidentatus population in Canary Creek marsh were also taken. Larger snails were found to occur in the low marsh zone, whereas smaller snails occurred in the high marsh zone. Since the high marsh area is flooded less often than the low marsh, and the grass types found in the high marsh zone are known to afford protection from fish predation, the distribution of snails in the marsh is consistent with the idea that fish predation is an important factor influencing the distribution of snails in Canary Creek marsh. 相似文献

Fine root turnover is a major pathway for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is most likely sensitive
to many global change factors. Despite the importance of fine root turnover in plant C allocation and nutrient cycling dynamics
and the tremendous research efforts in the past, our understanding of it remains limited. This is because the dynamics processes
associated with soil resources availability are still poorly understood. Soil moisture, temperature, and available nitrogen
are the most important soil characteristics that impact fine root growth and mortality at both the individual root branch
and at the ecosystem level. In temperate forest ecosystems, seasonal changes of soil resource availability will alter the
pattern of carbon allocation to belowground. Therefore, fine root biomass, root length density (RLD) and specific root length
(SRL) vary during the growing season. Studying seasonal changes of fine root biomass, RLD, and SRL associated with soil resource
availability will help us understand the mechanistic controls of carbon to fine root longevity and turnover. The objective
of this study was to understand whether seasonal variations of fine root biomass, RLD and SRL were associated with soil resource
availability, such as moisture, temperature, and nitrogen, and to understand how these soil components impact fine root dynamics
in Larix gmelinii plantation. We used a soil coring method to obtain fine root samples (⩽2 mm in diameter) every month from May to October
in 2002 from a 17-year-old L. gmelinii plantation in Maoershan Experiment Station, Northeast Forestry University, China. Seventy-two soil cores (inside diameter
60 mm; depth intervals: 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, 20–30 cm) were sampled randomly from three replicates 25 m × 30 m plots to estimate
fine root biomass (live and dead), and calculate RLD and SRL. Soil moisture, temperature, and nitrogen (ammonia and nitrates)
at three depth intervals were also analyzed in these plots. Results showed that the average standing fine root biomass (live
and dead) was 189.1 g·m −2·a −1, 50% (95.4 g·m −2·a −1) in the surface soil layer (0–10 cm), 33% (61.5 g·m −2·a −1), 17% (32.2 g·m −2·a −1) in the middle (10–20 cm) and deep layer (20–30cm), respectively. Live and dead fine root biomass was the highest from May
to July and in September, but lower in August and October. The live fine root biomass decreased and dead biomass increased
during the growing season. Mean RLD (7,411.56 m·m −3·a −1) and SRL (10.83 m·g −1·a −1) in the surface layer were higher than RLD (1 474.68 m·m −3·a −1) and SRL (8.56 m·g −1·a −1) in the deep soil layer. RLD and SRL in May were the highest (10 621.45 m·m −3 and 14.83m·g −1) compared with those in the other months, and RLD was the lowest in September (2 198.20 m·m −3) and SRL in October (3.77 m·g −1). Seasonal dynamics of fine root biomass, RLD, and SRL showed a close relationship with changes in soil moisture, temperature,
and nitrogen availability. To a lesser extent, the temperature could be determined by regression analysis. Fine roots in the
upper soil layer have a function of absorbing moisture and nutrients, while the main function of deeper soil may be moisture
uptake rather than nutrient acquisition. Therefore, carbon allocation to roots in the upper soil layer and deeper soil layer
was different. Multiple regression analysis showed that variation in soil resource availability could explain 71–73% of the
seasonal variation of RLD and SRL and 58% of the variation in fine root biomass. These results suggested a greater metabolic
activity of fine roots living in soil with higher resource availability, which resulted in an increased allocation of carbohydrate
to these roots, but a lower allocation of carbohydrate to those in soil with lower resource availability.
