The Floy FTF-69 'fingerling' tag and the soft VIalpha tag are designed to be used on small salmonid fishes (> 100 and > 150mm, respectively). The two tags were compared for 160 days on hatchery-reared Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, (170–209mm). Tag retention and effects on growth rate and survival were analysed. VIalpha-tagged and untagged control fish had similar growth rates and grew significantly faster than Floy-tagged fish during the experiment. Tag retention was significantly higher for Floy tags (94%) than for VIalpha tags (78%). Most VIalpha tag loss (11%) took place within the first 10 days of tagging while there were no Floy tags lost during this period. Survival rates were about equal for all three groups (96–98%), and thus the tags did not seem to affect the survival of charr under hatchery conditions.  相似文献

Growth, and potential marking‐related mortality of small European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) after marking with visible implant elastomer tags (VIE) and coded wire tags (CWT) were investigated over a 6‐month period in a laboratory experiment. In addition, mark retention after marking was examined for another 16.5 months. Neither marking method had a significant effect on growth (P > 0.05) or mortality (P > 0.05). After 32 days detection of the VIE marks implanted on the ventral surface and along the base of the ventral tail fin margin was 98 and 100%, respectively, but decreased to 9 and 66% after 512 days. Retention of the CWT implanted in the dorsal musculature of A. anguilla was 99% after 32 days and did not change by day 512. It was therefore concluded that marking‐induced mortality was nil for both marking types over the 6‐month period. Generally, both methods are found to be suitable for marking young A. Anguilla. VIE tags, however, should be used for short‐time mark‐recapture experiments only, and should be injected at the base of the ventral fin margin. The use of CWTs seems to be the more suitable marking method for long‐term mark‐recapture experiments. Nevertheless, field tests are necessary to evaluate these marking methods.  相似文献

Understanding predator–prey interactions and food web dynamics is important for ecosystem-based management in aquatic environments, as they experience increasing rates of human-induced changes, such as the addition and removal of fishes. To quantify the post-stocking survival and predation of a prey fish in Lake Ontario, 48 bloater Coregonus hoyi were tagged with acoustic telemetry predation tags and were tracked on an array of 105 acoustic receivers from November 2018 to June 2019. Putative predators of tagged bloater were identified by comparing movement patterns of six species of salmonids (i.e., predators) in Lake Ontario with the post-predated movements of bloater (i.e., prey) using a random forests algorithm, a type of supervised machine learning. A total of 25 bloater (53% of all detected) were consumed by predators on average (± S.D. ) 3.1 ± 2.1 days after release. Post-predation detections of predators occurred for an average (± S.D. ) of 78.9 ± 76.9 days, providing sufficient detection data to classify movement patterns. Tagged lake trout Salvelinus namaycush provided the most reliable classification from behavioural predictor variables (89% success rate) and was identified as the main consumer of bloater (consumed 50%). Movement networks between predicted and tagged lake trout were significantly correlated over a 6 month period, supporting the classification of lake trout as a common bloater predator. This study demonstrated the ability of supervised learning techniques to provide greater insight into the fate of stocked fishes and predator–prey dynamics, and this technique is widely applicable to inform future stocking and other management efforts.  相似文献

Recent advances in micro-electronics make the study of the migration of even small marine animals (>12 cm) over many 1000s of kilometres a serious possibility. Important assumptions in long-term studies are that rates of tag loss caused by mortality or tag shedding are low, and that the tagging procedure does not have an unacceptable negative effect on the animal. This paper reports results from a study to examine the retention of relatively large (24 × 8 mm) surgically-implanted dummy acoustic tags over a 7-month period in steelhead pre-smolts (O. mykiss), and the effects of implantation on growth and survival. Although there was some influence on growth to week 12, survival was high for animals > 13 cm FL. In the following 16-week period, growth of surgically implanted pre-smolts was the same as the control population and there was little tag loss from mortality or shedding. Currently available acoustic tags can be implanted in salmonid fish ≥12 cm FL, although combined losses from mortality and tag shedding were 33–40% for animals in the 12 and 13 cm FL size classes. By 14 cm FL, combined rates of tag loss (mortality plus tag shedding) for surgically implanted tags dropped to <15% and growth following surgery was close to that of the controls. Our results suggest that studies of ocean migration and survival over periods of many months are now feasible even for animals as small as salmon smolts. Surgically implanted salmon smolts are therefore good candidates for freshwater and coastal ocean-tracking studies on relatively long time scales (months). On such time scales, even relatively small salmon smolts may move thousands of kilometers in the ocean.  相似文献

Natural enemies associated with eggs of >Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) wereevaluated by placing sentinel egg masses inweeds and cultivated tomato and bean crops innorthern California. Egg predation wasgenerally less than 10% and normally involvedpredators with chewing mouth parts. Predatorsseldom destroyed an entire egg mass, typicallyeating <40 eggs per exploited mass.Laboratory evaluation of >25 species ofpotential arthropod predators revealed that fewfed on >N. viridula eggs to any extent;however, numerous species fed on >N.viridula nymphs. Five species of eggparasites were recovered from sentinel eggmasses: >Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston),>Gryon obesum Masner and >Telenomuspodisi Ashmead (Scelionidae); and>Ooencyrtus californicus Girault and >O.johnsoni (Howard) (Encyrtidae). The major eggparasite was >T. basalis, the only exoticmember of the parasite guild; it typicallyparasitized 100% of the eggs in an exploitedegg mass. The results indicate thatparasitization of eggs and predation of smallnymphs can be important biotic mortalityfactors for >N. viridula populations innorthern California. It is suggested that acombination of factors – viz., eggparasitization, nymphal predation, regionalshortage of overwintering sites, and localshortages of suitable hosts – maintains thisexotic pest at relatively low levels in theregion.  相似文献

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio, [Linnaeus, 1758]) have long been established in the United States and in some cases their populations can be very dense, leading biologists to expend significant effort towards reducing numbers of common carp in some populations. Estimating abundance of common carp prior to removal efforts would be useful in evaluating success of these removal efforts, but marking large numbers of fish can be expensive. Therefore, a low-cost tagging option is needed. In this study, we used tank and field experiments to determine the retention and longevity of hole-punch marks in the opercula of common carp. For the tank experiment, fish were double marked with a size-3 self-piercing tag and an operculum hole-punch mark (using a paper hole-punch tool with a hole diameter of 6.4 mm) on opposite sides of the fish. Over the entirety of the 180–day tank experiment, retention of the self-piercing tags and hole-punch marks was 100% and no marking mortality was observed. For the field experiment, 883 common carp were tagged at random in two groups, a double-marked group (n = 416, both self-piercing tags and hole-punch) and a single-mark group (n = 467, self-piercing tag). Fish were sampled monthly for 398 days. Because the length distribution sampled was bimodal, we evaluated tag retention of fish <330 mm TL (small fish, n = 273) and > 331 mm TL (large fish, n = 143), separately. Hole-punch mark retention was high for both size classes throughout most of the field experiment. For large fish, retention of hole-punch marks was 100% for the entire 398-day experiment. For small fish, retention of hole-punch marks was 100% through 184-day and remained above 93% through 328-days, but declined to 0% by day 398. Our results suggest that the operculum hole-punch mark is a valuable low-cost, long-term technique for tagging common carp.  相似文献

A group of 36 1+ age class Salmo trutta were surgically implanted with dummy acoustic tags and monitored for 370 days. In total 13 tags were expelled throughout the experiment with an overall tag loss rate of c. 0.035 tags per day. Fish length was the only explanatory variable which had a significant association with subsequent tag expulsion. The estimated probability of retaining a tag for a year for a fish of length 32 cm was 0.76, 34 cm was 0.60 and 36 cm was 0.38. The long-term tag loss patterns were examined and discussed.  相似文献

Turbine-passed fish are exposed to rapid decreases in pressure which can cause barotrauma. The presence of an implanted telemetry tag increases the likelihood of injury or death from exposure to pressure changes, thus potentially biasing studies evaluating survival of turbine-passed fish. Therefore, a neutrally buoyant externally attached tag was developed to eliminate this bias in turbine passage studies. This new tag was designed not to add excess mass in water or take up space in the coelom, having an effective tag burden of zero with the goal of reducing pressure related biases to turbine survival studies. To determine if this new tag affects fish performance or susceptibility to predation, it was evaluated in the field relative to internally implanted acoustic transmitters (JSATS; Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System) used widely for survival studies of juvenile salmonids. Survival and travel time through the study reach was compared between fish with either tag type in an area of high predation in the Snake and Columbia rivers, Washington. An additional group of fish affixed with neutrally-buoyant dummy external tags were implanted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and recovered further downstream to assess external tag retention and injury. There were no significant differences in survival to the first detection site, 12 river kilometers (rkm) downstream of release. Travel times were also similar between groups. Conversely, externally-tagged fish had reduced survival (or elevated tag loss) to the second detection site, 65 rkm downstream. In addition, the retention study revealed that tag loss was first observed in fish recaptured approximately 9 days after release. Results suggest that this new tag may be viable for short term (<8 days) single-dam turbine-passage studies and under these situations, may alleviate the turbine passage-related bias encountered when using internal tags, however further research is needed to confirm this.  相似文献

Population augmentation and propagation of pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) have been a focus of scientists since the mid‐1990s. Various tag types have been used to gain a better understanding of population characteristics, stocking success, and movement patterns. Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags have been consistently used since the inception of recovery efforts to mark age‐1 and older pallid sturgeon. This tag has been successfully used with other sturgeon species, and tagging protocols for pallid sturgeon were developed in response to those successes. Tag retention rates in pallid sturgeon have been reported as variable or unknown and there has been no formal study to determine PIT tag retention in pallid sturgeon, particularly with age‐1 individuals that are propagated in hatcheries to be stocked into the wild. The objective was to evaluate retention rates of PIT tags inserted into the operculum and along the base of the dorsal fin of age‐1 pallid sturgeon (total fork length [FL] range = 214–358 mm). Tagged sturgeon (n = 80) were held in a large holding tank and inspected for tag loss twice a month for a total of 189 days. Final tag retention was 83% for tags inserted into the operculum and 85% for tags inserted near the dorsal fin. Tags shed from the operculum were from smaller fish (mean FL = 265 mm) and losses occurred during the first 60 days of the experiment. Tags shed from the dorsal site were predominantly from larger individuals (mean FL = 305 mm) and losses were continual throughout the experiment. Future research should determine size‐specific tag retention rates so that hatcheries can maximize retention in either tag placement location.  相似文献

Visible implant alpha (VI alpha) tag‐induced changes in mortality and condition, as well as tag retention and readability, were examined during a 4‐week period for juveniles of three fish species: tiger muskellunge Esox masquinongy × Esox lucius (91 ± 7 mm total length, LT, mean ± s.d.), Snake River cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki behnkei (84 ± 8 mm) and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (85 ± 5 mm). Mortality and condition did not differ between tagged fish and control fish for any species and overall tag retention rates were high (92% for E. masquinongy × E. lucius, 91% for O. c. behnkei and 100% for O. mykiss). Short‐term readability of VI alpha tags was low in juvenile E. masquinongy × E. lucius and juvenile O. c. behnkei. Therefore, it is not recommend to use VI alpha tags in juvenile E. masquinongy × E. lucius or juvenile O. c. behnkei for periods >2 weeks, but VI alpha tags seem to be suitable for juvenile O. mykiss for a period of at least 4 weeks.  相似文献

Litterfall consumption and predation on propagules is high in Indo-west-Pacific mangroves and low in Atlantic-east-Pacific ones. However, data for the latter area comes only from Caribbean and subtropical North American mangroves. South American data on litterfall consumption contradicts this view but data on predation on propagules are scarce. We measured predation on Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia schaueriana and Laguncularia racemosa propagules and seedlings and related to densities of large (>1.5 m high) and small (1–1.5 m) plants in mature and regenerating mangroves in Ceará state, Brazil. Predation on propagules was the highest among American mangroves (R. mange, >47%; A. schaueriana, >97%; L. racemosa, >83%), especially in the regenerating area. Predation on seedlings was low (maximum of 14% for R. mangle) and did not hamper growth. The dominance of large R. mangle trees in the mature mangrove is consistent with the lower predation on its propagules but the high proportions of small plants of other species indicate that dominance is achieved by mechanisms other than predation. In the regenerating mangrove, dominance of large and small L. racemosa and A. schaueriana plants is not consistent with the high predation on their propagules. Therefore, predation is not the main determinant of the species composition in this mangrove system.  相似文献

Many coho salmon stocks (Oncorhynchus kisutch) have been in decline during the past three decades. Canada’s most endangered salmon stock, the Thompson River coho salmon, is being studied extensively as managers attempt to reverse these population declines. Investigators are using acoustic telemetry to track the migratory behaviour and survival of the Thompson River (and other) coho salmon stocks. Coho salmon pre-smolts are relatively small compared with salmonid species that are typically studied using acoustic telemetry; therefore the identification of the appropriate sizes of fish and tags to use is critical. This study tested the effects of surgically implanting the three smallest sizes of acoustic tags currently available on the growth, survival, tag retention, swimming performance and physical condition of coho salmon pre-smolts for 300 days post-surgery. Maximum tag size to body size ratios ranged from 15–17% by fork length and 7–8% by mass for the three tag sizes (11 cm fork length for a 6 × 19 mm tag, 12.5 cm for a 7 × 19 mm tag, and 14 cm for a 9 × 21 mm tag). Based on our results, it is unlikely that coho salmon pre-smolts implanted with acoustic transmitters following these size guidelines would have poor survival in studies of freshwater migratory behaviour as a result of the surgery or the tag.  相似文献

There is still little information on effects of habitat degradation on post-dispersal seed predation at the landscape scale. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of habitat degradation and seed species on the variability of post-dispersal seed-predation rate. Experimental seed removal was investigated in six Mediterranean woody plant species, four trees (Pinus sylvestris, Quercus ilex, Acer opalus ssp. granatense, and Sorbus aria) and two shrubs (Berberis vulgaris and Crataegus monogyna), in an extensively used mosaic landscape on the Sierra Nevada massif (SE Spain). Seed depots were distributed over 2 years in five differently degraded landscape units, each one with three plots: shrubland; native forest; and dense, cleared and fenced reforestation stands. Predation was the highest in native forest, shrubland, and fenced reforestation, and the lowest in dense and cleared reforestation stands, being partially due to a positive correlation between shrub cover and post-dispersal seed predation. However, the main factors driving post-dispersal seed predation were intrinsic to seeds, as species preference explained most of the variance in our model for predation. The plant-species ranking was Quercus > Pinus > Sorbus > Berberis > Acer > Crataegus, the dominant tree species being the most depredated. These findings are novel because they suggest for the first time that species-selection patterns by post-dispersal seed predators tended to remain constant through both study years in all habitats comprising a mosaic landscape, whether native forest, reforestation stands or successional shrubland.  相似文献

This pilot study used programmed acoustic tags implanted into Salmo salar smolts, in conjunction with an extensive offshore marine receiver array, to investigate late-stage migratory behaviour and survival of returning adult salmon. A total of 100 smolts were tagged in 2020, and a number of individuals were successfully detected as returning adults in 2021. After detection efficiency was accounted for, 5–9 adults were estimated to have returned to the offshore array c. 45 km from the river mouth. A total of three fish were subsequently detected in the river. Losses of between 40% and 66% were evident during the final stages of ocean migration, and one tagged fish provided direct evidence of a predation event.  相似文献

We studied the Diel Vertical Migration (DVM) of several zooplankton taxa and an important zooplanktivore Rastrineobola argentea in a eutrophic bay of Lake Victoria for a total of 3 months during wet and dry seasons. Zooplankton were sampled twice a month at full moon and new moon. The zooplankton community of this lake was numerically dominated by cyclopoid copepods (>80%) of which 80% were juveniles. The composition of zooplankton was not significantly different (P > 0.05) for the different sampling months (November 2000, March 2001 and July 2001), but total zooplankton abundance was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in July (dry season) than during March or November (wet seasons). DVM behaviour was observed in some of the zooplankton groups including Tropocyclops spp., Thermocyclops spp., Thermodiaptomus galeboides and Diaphanosoma excisum. In these groups, we also observed that they were significantly (P < 0.05) more abundant at full moon than at new moon in some months, a pattern not seen in non-DVM groups. The amplitude of migration tended to be higher at new moon than full moon for all DVM zooplankton but not significantly so (P > 0.05). The zooplanktivore R. argentea exhibits typical DVM behaviour, perhaps to avoid visual predation itself, but it also increases the predation pressure on zooplankton in deeper waters. Feeding times for R. argentea peak just after dusk and dawn. For the copepod calanoid T. galeboides, there was a strong relationship (P < 0.05) between the amplitude of migration and midday (12:00) water transparency, suggesting that these zooplankton may have descended deeper on days with higher water transparency. In the absence of temperature and food gradients but with predation pressure from a migrating zooplanktivore, the depth of descent of zooplankton may be well associated with water transparency.  相似文献

We examined the extent of movements of juvenile Florida pompano, Trachinotus carolinus, and gulf kingfish, Menticirrhus littoralis, along an open ocean beach. Fishes were collected by seine at three sites along Masonboro Island and Carolina Beach, NC between 7 June and 7 July 1995. All specimens 40 mm standard length (SL) were tagged with coded wire tags and released at the capture sites. Between 7 July and 9 August and on 15–16 September Masonboro Island and northern Carolina Beach were surveyed for tagged fish. A controlled tag mortality/retention study was conducted for both species. Overall, 1569 Florida pompano (40–135 mm SL) were tagged. Sixty-one (3.9%) of these were recaptured, and only eight moved away from the original tagging sites. The largest movements by two Florida pompano were 2.1 and 10.5 km. Many fish remained at their original tagging sites for 21–27 days. Of 488 gulf kingfish (36–158 mm SL) tagged, 16 (3.3%) were recaptured. Gulf kingfish also exhibited little movement away from tagging sites during the study, with individuals remaining at original tagging sites up to 21 days. Stock size estimates for Florida pompano ranged from 3354 to 4670 among the tagging sites, with densities ranging from 1.9 to 2.6 fish m–2. The remarkable site fidelity exhibited by these two species suggests that resources were not limiting or that predation pressure was not high enough to cause large scale movements during the study. This implies that local disturbances could impact behavior or survival of juvenile fishes in the surf zone.  相似文献

Biotelemetry is a central tool for fisheries management, with the implantation of transmitters into animals requiring refined surgical techniques that maximize retention rates and fish welfare. Even following successful surgery, long-term post-release survival rates can vary considerably, although knowledge is limited for many species. The aim here was to investigate the post-tagging survival rates in the wild of two lowland river fish species, common bream Abramis brama and northern pike Esox lucius, following their intra-peritoneal double-tagging with acoustic transmitters and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. Survival over a 2-year period was assessed using acoustic transmitter data in Cox proportional hazards models. Post-tagging survival rates were lowest in the reproductive periods of both species, but in bream, fish tagged just prior to spawning actually had the highest subsequent survival rates. Pike survival was influenced by sex, with males generally surviving longer than females. PIT tag detections at fixed stations identified bream that remained active, despite loss of an acoustic transmitter signal. In these instances, loss of the acoustic signal occurred up to 215 days post-tagging and only during late spring or summer, indicating a role of elevated temperature, while PIT detections occurred between 18 and 359 days after the final acoustic detections. Biotelemetry studies must thus always consider the date of tagging as a fundamental component of study designs to avoid tagged fish having premature end points within telemetry studies.  相似文献

Short‐finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) have complex vocal repertoires that include calls with two time‐frequency contours known as two‐component calls. We attached digital acoustic recording tags (DTAGs) to 23 short‐finned pilot whales off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and assessed the similarity of two‐component calls within and among tags. Two‐component calls made up <3% of the total number of calls on 19 of the 23 tag records. For the remaining four tags, two‐component calls comprised 9%, 23%, 24%, and 57% of the total calls recorded. Measurements of six acoustic parameters for both the low and high frequency components of all two‐component calls from the five tags were compared using a generalized linear model. There were significant differences in the acoustic parameters of two‐component calls between tags, verifying that acoustic parameters were more similar for two‐component calls recorded on the same tag than for calls between tags. Spectrograms of all two‐component calls from the five tags were visually graded and independently categorized by five observers. A test of inter‐rater reliability showed substantial agreement, suggesting that each tag contained a predominant two‐component call type that was not shared across tags.  相似文献

We examined the effect of predation risk on female association patterns in the live-bearing sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna). We tested two classes of females, with and without the risk of predation by a green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus): (1) postpartum females (maintained with males until visibly gravid, then isolated and tested within 24–48 h of dropping a brood); and (2) non-postpartum females (different females, isolated from males for >50 days). When there was no apparent risk of predation, postpartum females showed a significant preference for large over small males, whereas non-postpartum females showed no size preference at all. When there was an apparent risk of predation, postpartum females maintained their preference for larger males and non-postpartum females continued to show no preference for large or small males. These results suggest that reproductive status (receptivity) plays a greater role in mate preference than predation risk. For postpartum females, the cost of not choosing a preferred mate may outweigh the potential cost of predation. Non-postpartum females either do not benefit from mating or are being indecisive about mating and thus are less likely to be choosy whether or not a predator is present.Communicated by I. In social insects, the activity rhythm of foragers and their action range determinate the activity of the colony. In vespids, which are mostly predators, the foraging range of workers determines their maximum predation pressure round the nest. One of these species, Vespa velutina, a recently invasive species introduced into Europe, exerts a strong predation on honeybees at the hive. Therefore, the definition of its activity rhythm and spatial range of predation is of primary importance. Using radio frequency identification tags (RFID), two experiments were carried out to (a) determine their return ability (called homing) in releasing 318 individuals at different distance from their colony and (b) monitor their foraging activity rhythm and the duration of their flights based on 71 individuals followed 24 hr/24 during 2 months. The homing ability of V. velutina was evaluated to be up to 5,000 m and was not affected by the cardinal orientation of release point. The lag time to return to the nest increased with the distance of release. Most of the flight activity took place between 07:00 a.m. and 08:00 p.m., hornets doing principally short flights of less than an hour. Foraging range was thus estimated ca. 1,000 m around the nest. This study of V. velutina assisted by RFID tags provides for the first time a baseline for its potential foraging distance that increase our knowledge of this species to (a) refine more accurately models for risk assessment and (b) define security perimeter for early detection of predation on invasion front.  相似文献
