The erythrocyte surface sialic acid levels of 200 apparently healthy indigenous Nigerian poultry species (pigeons, guinea fowls, ducks and chickens, n = 50 for each species) presented for slaughter at a poultry abattoir in Zaria, Nigeria was determined. Other parameters determined were packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma total protein (TP) concentration. The mean erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentration of pigeons, guinea fowls, ducks and chickens were 7.88 +/- 2.51, 14.6 +/- 2.51, 17.6 +/- 2.51 and 14.2 +/- 2.51 mg mg(-1) respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentration of all the species of poultry sampled (P < 0.05). The high erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentration in the indigenous Nigerian poultry species could be responsible for their resistance to infectious diseases, whose aetiologic agents produce neuraminidases. The mean PCV of the pigeons, guinea fowls, ducks and chickens were 46.22 +/- 6.91, 38.24 +/- 6.91, 36.50 +/- 6.91 and 36.46 +/- 6.91% respectively. The difference between the mean PCV values of pigeons on the one hand and guinea fowls, ducks and chickens on the other was statistically significant (P < 0.05). A negative correlation (r = -0.36, P < 0.05) between mean erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentrations and PCV was observed, i.e. the birds with the highest mean PCV values had the lowest levels of erythrocyte surface sialic acid. There was no correlation between TP concentration and either erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentration or PCV values. It is suggested, based on this study, that erythrocyte sialic acid types in these species should be determined, as the results may be vital in selective breeding.  相似文献

Collagen and elastin fibers in human pulmonary alveolar walls   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The morphology and morphometric data of collagen and elastin fibers in the pulmonary alveolar walls are presented. Specimens were obtained from postmortem lungs quick-frozen at specified transpulmonary pressures. Collagen was stained by silver, and elastin was stained by orcein. Photomicrographs were composed by computer. Young lungs typically show small collagen fibers that radiate from the "posts," whereas larger fiber bundles traverse the septum irrespective of capillary blood vessels. In older lungs, rings of collagen around the posts appear enlarged. Elastin bundles do not show obvious variation in pattern with age and inflation pressure. Statistical frequency distributions of the fiber width and curvature are both skewed, but the square root of the width and the cube root of the curvature have approximate normal distributions. Typically, for young lungs at transpulmonary pressure of 4 cmH2O, the mean of (width)1/2 (in micron1/2) for collagen fibers is 0.952 +/- 0.242 (SD), that of (curvature)1/3 (in micron-1/3) is 0.349 +/- 0.094. Reference hematological and plasma biochemical values are presented for the greater glider (Petauroides volans) at Tumut (southeastern New South Wales, Australia). Nineteen animals were sampled during a capture period of 1 wk in August 1999. Values for red cell counts were significantly higher in male animals (mean +/- SE; males: 5.6 +/- 0.1; females: 5.2 +/- 0.1). Young animals had higher white cell counts than older ones (mean +/- SE; young: 4.9 +/- 0.4; older: 2.8 +/- 0.4). Lymphocytes were the predominant white blood cell type in this species.  相似文献

Cuticular permeability (CP) values of worker and soldier castes of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Coptotermes vastator Light were determined using gravimetric techniques. Comparisons were made between castes, species, and between colonies of C. formosanus and C. vastator. CP values did not differ among either species or colony, however they did differ between castes. Data reported here and that of established data in the literature for C. formosanus are inconsistent, with the current report having values as small as half that of previously published data. Examining mean CP data by colony indicated that there is a range for Coptotermes spp. termites, from 6.84+/-1.2 to 25.61+/-1.49 microg H(2)Ocm(-2)mmHg(-1)h(-1) dependent upon caste. A novel method of examining intercaste CP variability is the use of worker:soldier CP ratios. Ratios for C. formosanus were consistent between the current study and previous reports. Mean percentage total body water (%TBW) lost at the time of death was 33.75+/-1.15% (soldiers) and 54.24+/-1.43% (workers) for C. formosanus, and 37.69+/-3.31% (soldiers) and 52.87+/-3.65% (workers) for C. vastator. Consistently, %TBW (and fresh mass) was greater in worker than in soldier castes. These data suggest the use of water storage mechanisms in worker termites, as shown for other rhinotermitids.  相似文献

Applanation tonometry was used to estimate intraocular pressure (IOP) and Schirmer tear test (STT) I was used to estimate tear production in both eyes of 12 juvenile elands (Taurotragus oryx) and one eye each of 15 Asian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica). Mean (+/- standard deviation) IOP was 14.6 +/- 4.0 mm Hg in the eland and 11.9 +/- 3.3 mm Hg in the deer. Mean tear production was 18.7 +/- 5.9 mm/min in the eland and 10.5 +/- 6.5 mm/min in the deer. The large variation in IOP between two members of the family Bovidae, the elands reported here and the Thomson gazelle (Gazella thomsoni) for which we previously reported a mean pressure of 7.6 mm Hg, illustrates the need to establish reference values for each species. Tear production may be influenced by the species' natural habitat.  相似文献

A total of 65 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, and 27 smallmouth bass, M. dolomieu, collected in April-September 2000 and April-July 2001 from Gull Lake, Michigan, were examined for acanthocephalans. Leptorhynchoides thecatus and Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus infected all the bass examined. Leptorhynchoides thecatus had the highest mean intensity (258.2 +/- 185.4 in 2000 and 145.0 +/- 61.0 in 2001) of the species infecting smallmouth bass. Although N. cylindratus had higher mean intensities (42.1 +/- 37.9 in 2000 and 68.9 +/- 70.5 in 2001) than did L. thecatus in largemouth bass, the values were not significantly different between bass species. The prevalence, mean intensity, and mean abundance of Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli in the bass species were below the values for the other acanthocephalan species. Leptorhynchoides thecatus and N. cylindratus are the most abundant intestinal helminths in bass from Gull Lake.  相似文献

The cardiovascular effects of constant intracerebroventricular infusion in anesthetized strain 13 guinea pigs were studied. Bilateral cerebroventricles of the animals were catheterized stereotaxically with two 20-gauge blunt needles, penetrating 5 to 6 mm into the skull. Baseline cerebroventricular pressure values were 1.3 +/- 0.6 mmHg. After artificial cerebrospinal fluid was infused into the left ventricle at 0.5 ml/h, left cerebroventricular pressure increased to 8.1 +/- 1.6 mmHg (P less than 0.01), while right cerebroventricular pressure reached 5.6 +/- 2.2 mmHg within 20 minutes. No significant changes in mean blood pressure or heart rate were observed. When intracerebroventricular infusion rate increased to 5.0 ml/h, cerebrospinal fluid pressures of left and right cerebroventricles increased to 40.0 +/- 4.8 and 38.4 +/- 4.7 mmHg within 10 minutes from baseline values of 1.5 +/- 0.5 and 1.7 +/- 0.7 mmHg, respectively. Simultaneously, mean blood pressure and heart rate increased from 72 +/- 4 to 101 +/- 9 mmHg and from 195 +/- 11 to 218 +/- 17 beats/min, respectively. However, 30 to 50 minutes later, mean blood pressure, heart rate, and cerebrospinal fluid pressure decreased abruptly, and two of four animals died. We suggest that this technique with a low infusion rate (less than 0.5 ml/h) can be used to deliver certain drugs into the brain ventricles directly without producing undesirable effects on blood pressure or heart rate.  相似文献

Fifteen anesthetized mechanically ventilated patients recovering from multiple trauma were studied to compare the effects of high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) and continuous positive-pressure ventilation (CPPV) on arterial baroreflex regulation of heart rate. Systolic arterial pressure and right atrial pressure were measured using indwelling catheters. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and mean airway pressure were continuously monitored. Lung volumes were measured using two linear differential transformers mounted on thoracic and abdominal belts. Baroreflex testing was performed by sequential intravenous bolus injections of phenylephrine (200 micrograms) and nitroglycerin (200 micrograms) to raise or lower systolic arterial pressure by 20-30 Torr. Baroreflex regulation of heart rate was expressed as the slope of the regression line between R-R interval of the ECG and systolic arterial pressure. In each mode of ventilation the ventilatory settings were chosen to control mean airway pressure and arterial PCO2 (PaCO2). In HFJV a tidal volume of 159 +/- 61 ml was administered at a frequency of 320 +/- 104 breaths/min, whereas in CPPV a tidal volume of 702 +/- 201 ml was administered at a frequency of 13 +/- 2 breaths/min. Control values of systolic arterial pressure, R-R interval, mean pulmonary volume above apneic functional residual capacity, end-expiratory pulmonary volume, right atrial pressure, mean airway pressure, PaCO2, pH, PaO2, and temperature before injection of phenylephrine or nitroglycerin were comparable in HFJV and CPPV. Our aim was to define normal esophagogastric junction (EGJ) morphology and relaxation characteristics using high-resolution manometry (HRM). To this end, 75 asymptomatic controls underwent HRM with a solid-state manometric assembly incorporating 36 circumferential sensors spaced at 1-cm intervals positioned to record from the hypopharynx to the stomach. Ten 5-ml water swallows were obtained. EGJ relaxation was quantified by 1) nadir pressure, 2) the lowest 3-s mean residual pressure after swallow (E-sleeve), and 3) the transsphincteric gradient 2-6 s after swallowing measured from 2 cm above to 2 cm below the EGJ. A new parameter, integrated relaxation resistance (IRR), was also calculated. The IRR calculation accounted for both the duration of EGJ relaxation and instantaneous E-sleeve-type relaxation pressures during the entire interval of relaxation. The means and ranges (5-95th percentile) for nadir lower esophageal sphincter relaxation pressure (mean: 3.9 mmHg, range: 0-10.1 mmHg) and E-sleeve relaxation pressure (mean: 8.1 mmHg, range: 4.1-15.1 mmHg) were consistent with previously reported values. The mean relaxation interval was 7.95 +/- 0.2 s (mean +/- SE), whereas the median relaxation pressure during that interval was 10.7 +/- 0.5 mmHg (mean +/- SE). Mean IRR was 1.3 mmHg/s (95th percentile: 3.0 mmHg/s). Mean EGJ length was 3.7 cm. In conclusion, HRM provides a seamless dynamic representation of pressure within and across the EGJ. In addition to providing conventional EGJ relaxation parameters, this technology also creates opportunities to quantify more precise measures of EGJ relaxation and morphology.  相似文献

Estimation of total systemic arterial compliance in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Systemic arterial compliance, a major component of aortic input impedance, was determined in 10 patients with congestive heart failure secondary to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and 11 age-matched control subjects found free of detectable cardiovascular disease. Total arterial compliance was determined from high-fidelity ascending aortic pressure and velocity recordings using 1) the traditional monoexponential aortic diastolic pressure decay and 2) the direct solution of the equation, which describes the three-element windkessel model of the arterial system. Resting values for total arterial compliance (x10(-3) cm5/dyn) derived from method 1 were significantly correlated with compliance derived from method 2 (r = 0.89, P less than 0.01). However, method 1 values (control mean 1.15 +/- 0.27, heart failure mean 1.18 +/- 0.54) were consistently and significantly lower (P less than 0.001) than method 2 values (control mean 1.59 +/- 0.50, heart failure mean 1.38 +/- 0.60). Resting total arterial compliance in heart-failure patients was not significantly different from control subjects. Total arterial compliance did not significantly change with exercise in either group despite increases in arterial pressure. However, nitroprusside administration in the heart-failure group increased total arterial compliance both at rest and on exercise compared with the unmedicated state. These different methodological approaches to the estimation of total arterial compliance in humans resulted in significantly different absolute values for compliance, although both methods provided concordant results with respect to the response of arterial compliance to physiological and pharmacological interventions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A total of 76 adult individuals of Rana vaillanti were collected in Laguna Escondida, Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico, and their helminth infracommunity structure was determined. Among the 21 helminth taxa collected (10 digeneans, 8 nematodes, and 3 acanthocephalans), the digenean Langeronia macrocirra reached the highest prevalence (64.4%), mean abundance (6.6), and mean intensity (10.4), as well as the highest total number of individuals (499). Only 2 frogs were uninfected, the remainder harbored between 1 and 7 helminth species and 1-102 individuals; mean species richness and abundance were 3.49 +/- 0.22 and 16.1 +/- 16.3, respectively. Langeronia macrocirra dominated in 50.6% of the infracommunities, with relatively low Berger-Parker index values (0.56); for this reason, the evenness was high (0.70 +/- 0.31), and consequently, diversity values are the highest recorded to date in species of Rana. However, patterns of helminth infracommunity richness and diversity were similar to those previously observed in amphibians. This structure is attributed to the feeding habits (between 66.7 and 81% of helminth species parasitizing R. vaillanti enter using the food web dynamics) and low vagility (the remainder species infect by host penetration).  相似文献

The blood volume of anesthetized rats was expanded acutely by 33% with donor blood while a caval snare was gradually tightened so that right atrial pressure (RAP) was prevented from rising (n = 6). In control experiments (n = 5) an aortic snare was used to hold mean arterial blood pressure near the values found in the experimental series. However, RAP was allowed to change freely and increased by 1.6 +/- 0.4 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa) during volume expansion. When the two groups were compared, there were no significant differences between their mean arterial blood pressures (near 110 mmHg) or in their cardiac outputs (near 0.25 mL X min-1 X g body weight-1). There were, however, significant differences between their renal responses to the volume load. When RAP was free to change, the rate of volume excretion (V) increased to 30 +/- 15 (SEM) microL X min-1 X g kidney weight-1 (KW) from its control value of 3.49 +/- 0.31 and the rate of sodium excretion (UNaV) increased to 3.59 +/- 0.20 muequiv X min-1 X g KW-1 from its preinfusion value of 0.42 +/- 0.10. When RAP was not allowed to increase during volume loading, V and UNaV did not change from their respective preinfusion values (2.99 +/- 0.46 microL X min-1 X g KW-1 and 0.35 +/- 0.10 muequiv X min-1 X g KW-1). The results imply that during acute blood volume expansion increased central vascular pressure is a prerequisite for the homeostasis of body water and salt.  相似文献

We measured genome size (nuclear DNA content) by fluorescence flow cytometry in 55 species of birds representing 12 different orders. Similar studies were performed in approximately 100 species by laboratories using absorption cytophotometry of Feulgen-stained nuclei. Although there have been apparent discrepancies in the assigned values for the species used as a reference, the values obtained in the different laboratories are generally in agreement. When the data are standardized in relation to a diploid (2C) value of 2.5 picograms (pg) of DNA for the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), the mean for DNA content in 135 species representing 17 orders is 2.82 +/- 0.33 (SD) pg with a range of 2.0-3.8 pg. Thus the genome size of birds is the most conservative of any vertebrate class and, all values considered, is smaller and more uniform in size than previous estimates would indicate. This could be explained by a previously unexplored hypothesis: that the genome of birds has evolved from a small ancestral genome that was reduced before emergence of the protoavian.  相似文献

An enhanced hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) activity has been described during onset of elevated blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). An instability of the HPA axis could thus contribute to the development of hypertension in these animals. Glucocorticoid effects on blood pressure and HPA function were studied therefore in SHR and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and Wistar rats. Beginning at 4 weeks of age, the rats were treated with 0.1 and 0.5 microgram betamethasone per milliliter drinking water for 7 weeks. SHR and WKY responded with a significant elevation in average blood pressure. In SHR, mean blood pressure rose from 181.4 +/- 3.9 (mean +/- SEM) to 203.1 +/- 2.8 mm Hg in response to the lower dose of betamethasone and to 209.2 +/- 4.0 mm Hg in response to 0.5 microgram betamethasone per milliliter drinking water. In WKY, blood pressure increased from 134.4 +/- 3.3 to 148.2 +/- 3.0 and 157.9 +/- 4.5 mm Hg in response to the lower and higher dose of betamethasone, respectively. No significant effect was seen in Wistar rats, where the mean blood pressure values changed insignificantly from 133.8 +/- 2.1 to 136.3 +/- 3.2 and 135.6 +/- 2.4 mm Hg. Stress-induced secretion of corticosterone was significantly suppressed in a dose-dependent manner in all three strains. Stress-induced secretion of adrenocorticotropin was markedly reduced by 0.5 microgram betamethasone per milliliter in SHR and by both doses in WKY. No significant effect, however, was seen in Wistar rats. A predisposition to the hypertensiogenic actions of glucocorticoids was found therefore in SHR and WKY, but not in Wistar rats.  相似文献

The genus Anicla Grote, 1874 is composed of eleven species; their larvae are harmful, mainly to native and cultivated grasses, but up to now, there is information available of only two species. This study aims at detailing the bionomy of A. mahalpa Schaus; the data were obtained from a laboratory rearing under the following settings: 20 +/- 2 masculineC, 70 +/- 10% relative humidity and 12 hours of photoperiod. Larvae were fed on ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam. (Poaceae). The results expressed by the mean and respective standard error for the periods of each phase, in days, were the following: egg 6.00 +/- 0.00, larva 36.47 +/- 0.44, pre-pupa 5.23 +/- 0.21, pupa 23.60 +/- 0.37, and adult: longevity 15.24 +/- 0.75 with pre-egg-laying-periods of 5.29 +/- 0.32; egg-laying period, 9.64 +/- 0.81, and post-egg-laying period, 0.71 +/- 0.27 days. The mean number of egg-laying cycles per female was 7.36 +/- 0.20 and 2,014.21 +/- 78.93 eggs per female. Eggs, which are subspheric, have a diameter of 0.76 +/- 0.01 mm; larvae passed through six instars; their head capsules width, provided a mean ratio of growth of 1.482. Pupae presented a mean width and length of 6.07 +/- 0.06 and 17.24 +/- 0.19 mm, respectively and weight of 0.33 +/- 0.01 g.  相似文献

We compared changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) during graded lower body negative pressure (LBNP) and 450 ml of hemorrhage in nine healthy volunteers. During LBNP, central venous pressure (CVP) decreased from 6.1 +/- 0.4 to 4.5 +/- 0.5 (LBNP -5 mmHg), 3.4 +/- 0.6 (LBNP -10 mmHg), and 2.3 +/- 0.6 mmHg (LBNP -15 mmHg), and there were progressive increases in SNA at each level of LBNP. The slope relating percent change in SNA to change in CVP during LBNP (mean +/- SE) was 27 +/- 11%/mmHg. Hemorrhage of 450 ml at a mean rate of 71 +/- 5 ml/min decreased CVP from 6.1 +/- 0.5 to 3.7 +/- 0.5 mmHg and increased SNA by 47 +/- 11%. The increase in SNA during hemorrhage was not significantly different from the increase in SNA predicted by the slope relating percent change in SNA to change in CVP during LBNP. These data show that nonhypotensive hemorrhage causes sympathoexcitation and that sympathetic responses to LBNP and nonhypotensive hemorrhage are similar in humans.  相似文献

Respiratory muscle fatigue: a cause of ventilatory failure in septic shock   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The effect of endotoxic shock on the respiratory muscle performance was studied in spontaneously breathing dogs given Escherichia coli endotoxin (Difco Laboratories, 10 mg/kg). Diaphragmatic (Edi) and parasternal intercostal (Eic) electromyograms were recorded using fishhook electrodes. The recorded signals were then rectified and electrically integrated. Pleural, abdominal, and transdiaphragmatic (Pdi) pressures were recorded by a balloon-catheter system. After a short control period, the endotoxin was administered slowly intravenously (within 5 min). Death was secondary to respiratory arrest in all animals. All animals died within 150-270 min after the onset of endotoxic shock. Within 45-80 min of the endotoxin administration, mean blood pressure and cardiac output dropped to 42.1 +/- 4.1 and 40.1 +/- 6.0% (mean +/- SE) of control values, respectively, with little change afterward. Mean inspiratory flow rate and Pdi increased from control values of 0.27 +/- 0.03 l X s-1 and 5.75 +/- 0.7 cmH2O to mean values of 0.44 +/- 0.3 l X s-1 and 8.70 +/- 1.05 cmH2O and then decreased to 0.17 +/- 0.03 l X s-1 and 3.90 +/- 0.30 cmH2O before the death of the animals. There were no major changes in the mechanics of the respiratory system. Edi and Eic increased progressively to mean values of 360 +/- 21 and 263 +/- 22% of control, respectively, before the death of the animals. None of the dogs were hypoxic. Estrogen had no effect on MAP but resulted in a nonsignificant stimulation of total plasma corticosteroids and a marked increase in corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) binding capacity which increased from a control value of 18.8 +/- (SD) 1.2 micrograms/100 ml to 28.1 +/- 2.3 micrograms/100 ml (p less than 0.001) following the administration of estrogen for the first 21 days (approx. 10 micrograms/day) and then further to 31.4 +/- 2.8 (p less than 0.001 vs. control values) after a higher estrogen dose of approximately 30 micrograms/day for the next 30 days, respectively. Plasma aldosterone concentration was not affected by estrogen treatment. In contrast to CBG, binding of aldosterone to plasma aldosterone-binding globulin was totally absent before and following the estrogen treatment. The striking difference between the rabbit showing an absence of plasma protein binding of aldosterone and several other animal species is perhaps of great importance for the blood pressure regulation and for understanding of the particular resistance of blood pressure to salt or mineralocorticoids reported in this species.  相似文献

In cod, Gadus morhua L., calcium levels expressed as percentage of tissue dry weight were (mean +/- SD) 0.0042 +/- 0.0010% of ovary before final maturation and 0.0133 +/- 0.0024% of mature eggs. In plaice Pleuronectes platessa L. these values were 0.0029 +/- 0.0006 and 0.0097 +/- 0.0001. In mature eggs of both fish species these values are at least one order of magnitude less than in the yolk of the domestic fowl Gallus domesticus L. (0.14% of dry weight). The corresponding values for iron were (2.31 +/- 0.22) X 10(-3)% of ovary and (3.07 +/- 0.29) X 10(-3)% of mature egg in cod. In plaice these values were (1.57 +/- 0.15) X 10(-3)% and (2.74 +/- 0.94) X 10(-3)%. These levels are 4-7 times less than in the yolk of the domestic fowl (0.012-0.020%). These differences between the mature pelagic eggs of marine teleosts and the eggs of other oviparous vertebrates appear to be related to the availability of these elements in sea water, the different nature of the yolk phosphoprotein and the lower levels of protein phosphorus in the eggs of these fish species.  相似文献
