Effects of osmotic tension, salinity and alkalinity were studied on seed germination of three grasses of Karnal-Kurukshetra region with a view to evaluating their capacity to establish through seeds in saline and alkaline environments. Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions in petri dishes lined with blotting papers that were wetted with non-ionic osmotic solutions of mannitol (–2.5 to –15 bars); salinized solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2 and CaSO4 (Electrical conductivity, EC, ranging from 4 to 16 dS/m), alkaline solutions of Na2CO3 (pH 9 to 10) and also in dishes filled with alkali soil grades of the same pH range. Seed germination of all the three grasses was observed to be delayed and finally suppressed by the stress conditions, magnitude of reduction being related to the kind and level of stress as well as to the species. WhileSorghum halepense showed a strikingly superior stress-resistance,Panicum miliare did not appear to be suited to establishment through seeds.Diplachne fusca, on the other hand, was found to be remarkably adapted to alkalinity.  相似文献

种间相互作用是影响湿地植物群落构建的关键因子,其形式、强度和机制可能随着生长发育的过程而发生改变。种子萌发是植物生命周期的关键环节,一定程度上决定了植物种群分布和群落结构。野外种子萌发过程受到邻近同种或异种种子间相互作用的影响,但对于种子萌发过程中种内、种间相互作用强度及其影响因素的了解仍十分有限。该研究通过培养皿萌发实验探讨了种子密度(每皿80粒、每皿160粒)及比例(单种、3:1混种、2:2混种、1:3混种)对互花米草(Spartina alterniflora)、海三棱藨草(Scirpus×mariqueter)、芦苇(Phragmites australis)种子萌发率、平均萌发时间的影响,并采用相对邻株效应(RNE)评估了这3个物种的种内、种间相互作用强度。结果表明,密度对互花米草、海三棱藨草、芦苇种子的萌发率均有一定的促进作用。与互花米草混种时,芦苇种子在占比最低(25%)处理下的平均萌发时间显著长于单种及其他混种比例处理。3种植物种子的竞争能力没有明确的等级关系,存在非传递性竞争,萌发时海三棱藨草相对互花米草具有一定的竞争优势,互花米草相对芦苇具有一定优势,而芦苇的竞争能...  相似文献

Seasonalvariation in leaf nitrogen of mature green and senescent leaves and nitrogenresorption efficiency in three plants (Spartina maritima, Halimioneportulacoides and Arthrocnemum perenne) of aTagus estuary salt marsh are reported. Total nitrogen concentrations in greenand senescent leaves were higher during winter (December and March). Soilinorganic nitrogen availability showed an opposite pattern with higherconcentrations during summer (June and September) when total leaf biomass washigher. Nitrogen resorption efficiency ranged between 31 and 76% andH. portulacoides was the plant that better minimizednitrogen loss by this process. Nitrogen resorption occurred mainly from thesoluble protein pool, although other fractions must have been broken down duringthe resorption process. No significant seasonal variation in nitrogen resorptionefficiency and no relation to leaf total nitrogen or soil nitrogen availabilitywere found. This suggests that the efficiency of the resorption process is notdetermined by the plant nitrogen status nor by the availability of the nutrientin the soil. Nevertheless, resorption from senescing leaves may play animportant role in the nitrogen dynamics of salt marsh plants and reduce thenitrogen requirements for plant growth.  相似文献

盐沼生态系统环境梯度明显,物种组成较简单,是研究生物多样性与生态系统功能关系的理想对象。本研究以崇明东滩盐沼湿地为研究区域,研究优势种去除对植物群落结构以及底栖动物群落的影响。结果表明:(1)去除处理仅对植物群落分株密度有极显著效应(P0.01)。去除组和对照组物种组成差异随时间增加而减小,处理效应逐渐减弱。(2)去除组底栖动物密度均低于对照组,但差异不显著。(3)盐沼植物群落特征与底栖动物群落有密切关系,植物密度、冠层高度与底栖动物密度相关性极显著。去除优势种后,植物群落分株密度升高,群落内剩余物种占比有所上升,次优势种对群落的补偿效应具有较大贡献;而底栖动物群落密度下降,其生物量和多样性指数的变化趋势与密度并不一致。上述结果表明生物多样性变化影响了盐沼湿地生态系统植物群落和底栖动物群落结构,进而可能影响物质循环和能量流动过程。  相似文献

Interspecific differences in responsiveness to temperature, photoperiod, soil salinity, and soil moisture confirm the hypothesis that abiotic factors differentially affect the germination of salt marsh plants. In growth chamber experiments, four of eight annual species responded to small differences in temperature or photoperiod. Increasing soil salinity decreased the final proportion of seeds germinating and slowed germination for each of the seven species tested. Higher soil moisture increased the proportion germinating of five species and germination speed of all seven species. Salinity and moisture interacted to affect the proportion germinating of five species and germination speed of all seven species. Although the abiotic factor with the largest effect on germination varied among species, more species responded to, and the magnitudes of the responses were larger for, soil salinity than for the other abiotic factors. These germination tests partially explained interspecific differences in the timing of germination in the field. Patterns of Hutchinsia procumbens, Lythrum hyssopifolium, Parapholis incurva, and possibly Lasthenia glabrata ssp. coulteri germination in response to a nonseasonal rainfall could be explained by their response to salinity, temperature, or photoperiod. Fine-scale differences in the timing of establishment within the typical germination window and spatial distributions along salinity and moisture gradients were not explained.  相似文献

Summary Seed predation can be an important determinant of plant success, but has received little attention in wetland plant communities. Here, we examine the role of flower and seed predators in limiting the seed production of the dominant perennial plants in a salt marsh plant community. Of the four perennial investigated, direct ovule loss to consumers ranged from 51 to 80%, resulting in seed set reductions ranging from 50% to over 20-fold. Most losses were due to generalist grazing by the grasshopper, Conocephalus spartinae. More species-specific losses were inflicted by planthoppers, and microlepidopteran and dipteran larval seed parasites.Insect abundance and consumer pressure on flowers and seeds increased over the early summer, peaked in the middle of July, and declined through August, and this temporal pattern was reflected in the natural consumer damage incurred by each of the marsh perennials. Juncus gerardi flowers earlier than other marsh perennials and largely escapes heavy consumer losses. Spartina patens and Distichlis spicata flower in the middle of the summer during the peak consumer activity and incur extremely heavy seed losses. Spartina alterniflora flowers late in the summer as consumer pressure is subsiding, which appears to minimize its seed loss. In addition to destroying seeds directly, consumers also markedly reduce the frequency and affect the timing of sexual expression in these plants. In particular, predation drastically reduces the frequency of male flowers, which could lead to pollen limitation of seed set.Intense flower and seed predation on these marsh perennials may be an important determinant of the success of marsh plant populations as well as a potent selective force on their flowering phenologies and reproductive effort.  相似文献

The effects of tidalrestrictions by diking on salt marshbiogeochemistry were interpreted by comparingthe hydrology, porewater chemistry and solidphase composition of both seasonally floodedand drained diked marshes with adjacentnatural salt marshes on Cape Cod,Massachusetts. Flooding periods weregreatest in natural and least in drainedmarshes.Differences between the chemistry of thenatural and diked marshes depended upon thedepth of the water table and the supply ofsulfate for anaerobic metabolism. Drainedmarsh sediments were highly acidic (pH <4)with porewaters rich in dissolved Fe; thenatural and diked flooded marshes had pH 6–7.5and Fe orders of magnitude lower. Porewater nutrients, sulfides and alkalinitywere much lower in both flooded and draineddiked marshes than in the natural marsh.Sediments of the drained marsh had subsided90 cm relative to the natural site due toorganic matter decomposition and compaction. However, despite the loss of organic matter,much of the P and N was retained, withNH4 likely protected from nitrificationby low pH and PO4 adsorbed on Fe and Aloxides. Iron, and to a lesser degree sulfur,had also been well retained by the sediment. Despite eight decades of diking, substantialamounts of reduced S, representing potentialacidity, persisted near the top of the watertable.In contrast, the surface of the seasonallyflooded marsh was only 15 cm below thenatural marsh. Accretion since dikingamounted to 25 cm and involved proportionallyless mineral matter.The restoration of seawater flow to bothseasonally flooded and drained diked marsheswill likely extend flooding depth andduration, lower redox, increase cationexchange, and thereby increase NH4,Fe(II), and PO4 mobilization. Increasedporewater nutrients could benefitrecolonizing halophytes but may also degradesurface water quality.  相似文献

The minirhizotron technique has been used to study root development in a salt marsh in the western part of the Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer during a three-year period. The objective of our study was to evaluate root depth distribution and seasonal changes in growth activities of natural plant root systems. Root number was counted at monthly intervals in the top soil layer (0–0.2 m) for every 2 cm soil depth. The number of roots was regarded as an easily detectable parameter reflecting root growth and decay.In general, highest rooting intensity was found in the soil's subsurface layer (0–0.08 m). The number of roots significantly decreased in deeper horizons of the soil. There was also a significant increase and decrease in the number of roots in the course of a year. The highest rooting intensity was found in late winter to early spring, which substantially decreased towards mid summer when the plants were in their reproductive phase. The data indicate that there is a clear seasonal pattern of root growth of salt marsh species.  相似文献

It has been known for a few decades that European rabbits consume seeds and fleshy fruits of native woody plants, but relevant factors in the endozoochory processes such as seed predation (chewing and digestion), sexual differentiation, or the temporal pattern of seed recovery have been little evaluated until now. In this study, we examined seed dispersal of three Mediterranean shrub species by wild rabbits through monitoring of seed retrieval and germination after gut passage. Twelve adult wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus; six males and six females) of similar size and age were fed seeds of three shrub species with fleshy fruits (Crataegus monogyna, Myrtus communis and Pistacia lentiscus). After ingestion of fruits, seeds were retrieved from dung every 12 h for a day and a half. The viability and germination of retrieved seeds were tested along with that of uneaten seeds. Between 5% and 76% of ingested seeds were retrieved from dung, with significant differences between species and sex. Most M. communis seeds were retrieved with 12–24 h after ingestion; almost all C. monogyna seeds were recovered with 0–12 h after ingestion; no seeds of P. lentiscus were recovered. Only in the case of M. communis seed was the recovery rate greater in female than in male. Passage through the rabbit gut significantly increased seed germination in M. communis, and decreased it in C. monogyna. In conclusion, wild rabbits acted in this study as predators of C. monogyna and P. lentiscus seeds and potential dispersers of M. communis seeds.  相似文献

Soil water saturation during prolonged periods of time generates a negative impact on nearly all terrestrial plants. In Mediterranean woodlands, precipitation can be very abundant during the wet season, inducing temporary soil waterlogging, coinciding with the seed dispersal and germination time of many species. We investigated the effects of waterlogging on seed germination and early root growth of three coexisting oak species (Quercus canariensis, Q. suber and Q. pyrenaica), by completely flooding of seeds for various periods of time. The three oak species showed a certain level of tolerance to waterlogging, only being affected those seeds subjected for long periods of submersion (over 30 days). Waterlogging during prolonged periods of time decreased the probability of seed germination in the three oak species, lengthened the time to germination, and hampered root development in two of the studied species. The main differences between oak species occurred in terms of root growth (Q. canariensis being the less affected, and Q. suber the most); these differential responses could be related to a species rank of waterlogging tolerance. Thus inter-specific differences in germination responses to waterlogging could contribute to explain, at least partially, species habitat and distribution patterns across landscapes. Seed mass also played an important role on different aspects of germination, though its relative importance varied as function of species and waterlogging treatment. The tolerance to stress induced by waterlogging increased with seed mass, but only in the case of Q. canariensis.  相似文献

Citrus and grapevines are salt-sensitive perennial crops. Damage caused by salinity is due mostly to accumulation of excessive concentrations of salt (Na- and Cl ions) in shoot tissues. In both crops, however, some rootstock varieties can restrict the accumulation of salt in scion leaves and stems. Salt-excluding rootstocks, however, are often deficient with regard to other desirable characteristics and as such their use is limited. As a consequence, we have conducted a range of crosses within both crops to select new salt-excluding hybrids which may have potential as new rootstocks and also to investigate the inheritance of salt exclusion in these woody perennials.In citrus, both Cl-ion and Na-ion exclusion has been observed as a continuous character and progenies segregate widely for their ability to restrict the accumulation of these ions in shoot tissues. The ability to exclude Cl ions appears to be independent of the ability to exclude Na ions. Thus a good Cl-ion excluder is not necessarily a good Na-ion excluder and vice versa. It has been possible, however, to select new salt-excluding citrus hybrids which perform as well as and sometimes better than parent varieties when grafted with a common scion and grown in artificially salinised field plots.In grapevines, the research has concentrated on the ability for Cl-ion exclusion and depending on the Cl-ion-excluding parent chosen this is inherited as either a polygenic or monogenic trait. In crosses between Vitis champini (Cl-ion excluder) and Vitis vinifera (Cl-ion accumulator), the ability to restrict Cl-ion accumulation in shoot tissues segregates widely with some offspring transgressing the performance of either parent. In crosses and backcrosses involving V. berlandieri and V. vinifera, however, hybrids segregate as either Cl-ion excluders or accumulators suggesting the effect of a major dominant gene for Cl-ion exclusion from V. berlandieri. This was evident from both field and glasshouse experiments although possible modifying genes from V. vinifera may affect the expression of this gene under glasshouse conditions in some crosses.  相似文献

Mesic deciduous forest herbs often disperse seed with morphophysiological dormancy (MPD) that prevents germination during unfavorable periods for seedling survival. However, for seeds of some species with MPD, seasonal separation of root and shoot emergence and variation in dormancy levels can complicate interpretation of seedling emergence timing in the field. We tested whether dormancy-break and germination requirements differed among co-occurring perennial forest herbs, Actaea racemosa, Hydrastis canadensis, and Sanguinaria canadensis, which are wild-harvested for their medicinal properties and known to have MPD. Seeds of all species exhibited a summer → autumn → winter requirement for seedling emergence in spring. However, species differed in seed-bank persistence due to variation in primary dormancy levels and stratification requirement of seeds. A. racemosa and H. canadensis can form short-term persistent seed bank, whereas S. canadensis can form a long-term persistent seed-bank, regardless of whether elaiosomes were removed from seeds prior to burial. A. racemosa seeds are dispersed in autumn with weak physiological dormancy, as seeds germinated to high rates at 15/6°C after 8 weeks. In contrast, most seeds of the summer dispersed species, H. canadensis and S. canadensis, require summer temperatures to overcome physiological dormancy. Consequently, seedling emergence is reduced and delayed by 1 year if seeds are not sown immediately following the period of natural dispersal. Seedling emergence was much lower in the field than in controlled conditions for all species, especially in the small-seeded A. racemosa. Interspecific variation in dormancy levels and germination traits must be considered when establishing populations for conservation purposes and in understanding recruitment limitation in perennial forest herbs.  相似文献

Abstract. Species composition, above-ground biomass and diversity of herbaceous communities were recorded in 50 sites on the upper salt marsh of the Guadalquivir delta (SW Spain). Through Canonical Correspondence Analysis relationships were shown between plant-species characteristics abundance and environmental variables. Seven community types were distinguished and related to hydro logical regime and physical and chemical soil parameters. The higher species richness was associated with moderate values of above-ground biomass (Biomass at maximum diversity, BMD = 302 g/m2). Salinity was negatively correlated with species richness. There was no significant correlation with total above-ground biomass. Water regime and soil nutrient (Ca, Mg) content were significant predictors of the community above-ground biomass.  相似文献

Biotic factors such as interactions among co-occurring taxa are frequently cited as important in determining how nekton use habitat, yet their effects have rarely been tested experimentally. We investigated the general hypothesis that depth distributions of five taxa common in salt marsh intertidal creeks are affected by the presence of other taxa. Two experiments were conducted in a pair of large (15 m3), multi-level (20, 40, and 60 cm water depth) flow-through tanks under fairly stable environmental conditions. During the first experiment, when grass shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.), mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), white mullet (Mugil curema), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), and pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) were each tested alone, the highest proportions of individuals occupied the intermediate and deepest depths. When all taxa were tested together, the distributions of resident creek taxa, mummichog and grass shrimp, shifted to shallower depths, but the distributions of the seasonal transient taxa, white mullet, spot, and pinfish, did not change. A second experiment was conducted to test the effect of predator presence on grass shrimp depth selection. Neither predatory pinfish nor non-predatory white mullet had a strong influence on grass shrimp depth distribution when tested separately, but grass shrimp shifted to shallower depths in the combined presence of both fish. This suggests that a multiple-taxa effect such as increased disturbance or higher encounter frequency influenced the depth selection of grass shrimp. Our results demonstrate that biotic factors are important in shaping distributions of grass shrimp and mummichog in shallow water habitat.  相似文献

Summary Young rhizome sprouts of the herbaceous perennial Jaumea carnosa were propagated from material collected in a salt marsh along the central California coast. The sprouts were transplanted to flats of sand sown with different densities of seeds of a representative glycophyte, Lolium perenne L. Derby, turf type. Controls flats contained only Jaumea or Lolium. Three series of replicated flats were watered from above with dilutions of seawater in 1/10 strength Hoagland solution, such that dissolved salts were 400, 4000 or 11,600 ppm. Two other series were continuously subirrigated with 400 or 11,600 ppm salt water. After 61 days of treatment in a greenhouse with a 30/11°C thermoperiod (mean daily max/min), all plants were harvested and weighed. In the monospecific control flats, the growth of both species declined with increasing salinity, but the relative decline of Lolium was three times that of Jaumea. Jaumea's root: shoot ratio was also less affected by salinity. Both species grew well when subirrigated by 400 ppm salt water, but grew poorly when subirrigated by 11,600 ppm salt water, indicating that aeration alone is not the most significant factor in the marsh. The effect of interspecific competition on Jaumea was marked at low salinity, depressing growth by 52% compared to controls, but at high salinity the competitive effect was insignificant, whether the plants were watered from above or subirrigated. This supports the hypothesis that intolerant halophytes such as Jaumea are restricted in nature to salt marshes because they are poor competitors with glycophytes on non-saline soils.This research was supported by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and by the University of California Bodega Marine Laboratory  相似文献

以二色补血草(Limonium bicolor)种子为试验材料,用不同浓度的NaCl、Na2SO4及二者质量比为1:1的混合盐在其种子萌发过程中进行胁迫,调查盐胁迫对种子萌发的影响,并测定萌发过程中种子蛋白质含量、淀粉酶活力及还原糖和总糖含量的变化.结果表明:盐胁迫使二色补血草种子的发芽势、发芽指数和发芽率明显降低,而且随着盐浓度的增鲻加,抑制作用增强;3种盐对种子萌发的抑制作用强度依次为NaCl>混合盐>Na2SO4;二色补血草种子耐盐适宜范围为Na2SO4 1.2%、混合盐0.8%、NaCl 0.5%,耐盐半致死浓度为Na2SO4 2.1%、混合盐1.4%、NaCl 1.1%,耐盐极限浓度为Na2SO4 3.5%、混合盐2.4%、NaCl 2.0%.盐处理后不萌发的种子转入蒸馏水后重新萌发的试验结果表明,盐分胁迫主要是通过渗透效应,抑制种子中蛋白质和总糖的分解,进而延缓或抑制了种子的萌发.  相似文献

Disturbance can generate heterogeneous environments and profoundly influence plant diversity by creating patches at different successional stages. Herbivores, in turn, can govern plant succession dynamics by determining the rate of species replacement, ultimately affecting plant community structure. In a south-western Atlantic salt marsh, we experimentally evaluated the role of herbivory in the recovery following disturbance of the plant community and assessed whether herbivory affects the relative importance of sexual and clonal reproduction on these dynamics. Our results show that herbivory strongly affects salt marsh secondary succession by suppressing seedlings and limiting clonal colonization of the dominant marsh grass, allowing subordinate species to dominate disturbed patches. These results demonstrate that herbivores can have an important role in salt marsh community structure and function, and can be a key force during succession dynamics.  相似文献

刺槐(RobiniapseudoacaciaLinn.)、湿地松(PinuseliotiEngelm.)和侧柏〔Platycladusorientalis(L.)Franco〕种子经03%CaCl2,250μg/gH3BO3和250μg/g多效唑(MET)浸种24h,然后测定幼苗的耐盐性。结果表明,在0.3%NaCl胁迫条件下,不同种子预处理方法对种子发芽率、平均苗高、根茎比、简易活力指数(SVIS)以及幼苗中Na+与K+的累积量、Na+/K+比及游离脯氨酸含量有较大影响。树种不同,处理效果也存在明显差异。湿地松以0.3%CaCl2,侧柏以250μg/gH3BO3浸种处理效果最好,显著提高种子发芽率、平均苗高、根茎比和SVIS,降低幼苗Na+吸收量和Na+/K+比,缓解盐胁迫逆境。3种种子预处理方法均降低刺槐种子发芽率、平均苗长和SVIS,但提高刺槐幼苗游离脯氨酸含量和幼苗根茎比,减少幼苗对Na+的吸收,降低Na+/K+比  相似文献
