Adaptation to temperature changes is vital to reduce adverse effects on individuals, and some may present phenotypic changes, which might be accompanied with physiological costs in fitness traits. The objective of this study was to determine whether the two strains of the herbivore Eccritotarsus catarinensis, a biological control agent against water hyacinth in South Africa, differ in their responses to temperature according to their geographical origin. We experimentally quantified the responses of the two strains, at three constant temperatures: 20 °C, 25 °C and 30 °C, using laboratory cultures that originated from Brazil and Peru, where climates differ. Reproductive output, egg hatching rate, sex ratio and longevity were recorded at each temperature. Fitness traits for both strains were significantly reduced at 30 °C compared with 25 °C and 20 °C in two successive generations. Nonetheless, Peruvian individuals continued their development at 30 °C, whereas Brazilian individuals that succeeded in emerging did not continue their development. In contrast, sex ratio was unaffected by temperature. The Peruvian strain of E. catarinensis presented different phenotypes depending on temperature and was more adapted to extreme high temperature than the Brazilian strain. The tropical origin of the population induces the insect to tolerate the extreme high temperature. We suggest that the Peruvian strain could be better suited for release to control water hyacinth in nature, particularly in regions where temperature is high.  相似文献

Coastal mangroves have the potential to improve the water quality of urban and rural runoff before it is discharged into adjacent coastal bays and oceans; but they also can be impaired by excessive pollutants from upstream. Nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), salinity, and other water quality parameters were measured in five mangrove tidal creeks in different hydrogeomorphic and urbanization settings during high and low tides over a calendar year of wet (June and August 2015) and dry (February and April 2016) seasons in the Greater Naples Bay area in Southwest Florida, USA. Nutrient concentrations (ave. ± std error) in the tidal creeks were 0.055 ± 0.008 mg-P/L for total phosphorus (TP) and 0.610 ± 0.020 mg-N/L for total nitrogen (TN), with an average N:P ratio of 11.4:1. Average wet season TP (0.075 ± 0.010 mg-P/L) was significantly higher than the dry season TP (0.033 ± 0.003 mg-P/L; p < 0.01, f = 15.17, fcrit = 3.89) and the average wet season TN (0.75 ± 0.03 mg-N/L) was significantly higher than dry season TN (0.52 ± 0.02 mg/L; p < 0.01, f = 64.14, fcrit = 3.89), suggesting that urban stormwater runoff is directly or indirectly affecting the nutrient conditions in these mangroves. Significant differences in nutrient concentrations between low tide and high tide were not found for either TP (p = 0.43, f = .63, fcrit = 3.88) or TN (p = 0.20, f = 1.66, fcrit = 3.89). These differences were confirmed by a PCA and cluster analyses, which found differences to be seasonal. We could not conclude from these results whether these five mangrove wetlands were sources nor sinks of nutrients based simply on the measurement of nutrient concentrations. But we illustrated that nutrient concentrations were indicators of the mangroves’ hydrogeomorphic settings, their tidal fluxes from Naples Bay, and the Bay's upstream watersheds, and less by direct urban runoff.  相似文献

In order to better understand the role of herbivorous snails in freshwater ecosystems, we conducted experiments investigating food preference of the snail Radix swinhoei on leaves of the submerged plant Vallisneria spiralis with and without periphyton coverage. The effects of snail grazing on the growth of V. spiralis were assessed in a no-snail control and at three snail densities (80, 160, 240 individuals m?2). Results showed that the snails chose preferentially leaves covered by periphyton. Grazing activity at low snail density (80 individuals m?2) was found to stimulate V. spiralis growth, but at higher snail density (240 individuals m?2), plant growth was apparently suppressed. An increase observed in nutrient concentrations in water column with increasing snail density may be attributed to nutrient release by snails. This study suggests that the nature of the relationship between herbivorous snails and macrophytes in freshwater ecosystems depends on the abundance of the snails. At low snail density, the relationship may be a mutualistic one, but at high density snail herbivory may impact negatively on macrophyte biomass in lakes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore the potential of three aquatic weeds, water hyacinth, cabomba, and salvinia, as substrates for anaerobic digestion. A set of four pilot-scale, batch digestions were undertaken to assess the yield and quality (% methane) of biogas from each plant species, and the rate of degradation. A set of 56 small-scale (100 mL) biological methane potential (BMP) tests were designed to test the repeatability of the digestions, and the impact of drying and nutrient addition. The results of the pilot-scale digestions show that both water hyacinth and cabomba are readily degradable, yielding 267 L biogas kg?1 VS and 221 L biogas kg?1 VS, respectively, with methane content of approximately 50%. There is evidence that the cabomba fed reactor leaked midway through the digestion therefore the biogas yield is potentially higher than measured in this case. Salvinia proved to be less readily degradable with a yield of 155 L biogas kg?1 VS at a quality of 50% methane. The BMPs showed that the variability was low for water hyacinth and cabomba but high for salvinia. They also showed that the addition of nutrient solution and manure did not significantly increase the biogas yields and that drying was detrimental to the anaerobic degradability of all three substrates.Based on these results treatment of both water hyacinth and cabomba by anaerobic digestion can be recommended. Anaerobic digestion of Salvinia cannot be recommended due to the low biogas yields and high variability for this substrate.  相似文献

Lack of submerged vegetation was studied in a small, shallow, alkaline, clear-water lake with high nitrate concentration (mean 9 mg NO3–N L−1) and profuse filamentous green algae (FGA) (mainly Spirogyra sp.). A laboratory microcosm and two lake enclosure experiments were carried out using Elodea nuttallii (Planchon) St John. E. nuttallii grew about 1.7 times as well in sediment from its place of origin compared with sediment from the lake. Differential water quality had no effect, and neither sediment nor water prevented growth in the lake. Nutrient addition reduced plant growth by more than 55% because of shading from epiphytic filamentous green algae (shoot dry weight versus epiphytic algal dry weight, r = −0.491, P < 0.05). Transplanted Elodea plants grew better in enclosures in the lake than in laboratory conditions with lake water and sediment (P < 0.001, t-test). Rare Elodea individuals in the lake indicate the presence of plant propagules in the lake sediment, but excessive growth of filamentous green algae (summer mean 3.2 g dry weight m−2) significantly hamperd plant growth (shoot length reduced from 29 ± S.E.M. 1 to 25 ± 1 cm) and bird herbivory significantly reduced survival (from 82 ± 7 to 40 ± 6%) and shoot growth (from 78 ± 6 to 18 ± 5 cm) and thus eliminates establishment of even modest plant beds. Fish disturbance and sediment stability were not important. Restoration of submerged plants may require reduction of nitrate input, control of filamentous green algae and protection from birds.  相似文献

The influence of the amplitude of cyclic water level fluctuations on the growth of four species of emergent macrophyte (Cyperus vaginatus, Phragmites australis, Triglochin procerum and Typha domingensis) was studied in a controlled, pond-based experiment. The amplitudes of water level fluctuations were static, ±15, ±30 and ±45 cm, each cycling over a forty-day period. In all treatments the water level fluctuated around an initial water depth of 60 cm. Within each amplitude treatment, plants were grown at three elevations with the sediment surface at 20, 40 or 60 cm. Only T. domingensis and P. australis showed a significant response to amplitude. Biomass of T. domingensis was similar in the static, ±15 and ±30 cm amplitude treatments but dropped by ca. 52% when grown in amplitudes of ±45 cm. In contrast, the largest biomass for P. australis occurred in the ±30 cm amplitude treatment suggesting this species prefers moderately fluctuating water levels. The response of P. australis to amplitude was contingent upon elevation with plants growing in the ±45 cm amplitude, low elevation treatment having particularly low biomasses. C. vaginatus biomass increased with increasing elevation but did not respond to amplitude while T. procerum did not respond to either amplitude or elevation likely due to the ability of the species to photosynthesise under water. The relative growth rate and the average emergent surface area were logarithmically related in C. vaginatus suggesting flooding of the photosynthetic canopy was limiting the ability of this species to acquire atmospheric carbon. No clear relationship was found for T. domingensis or P. australis indicating that a factor other than access to atmospheric carbon was restricting the growth of these species.  相似文献

A two-year study was conducted to explore summer development of macroalgae and their total phosphorus and nitrogen content at three stations in a broad and clear French carbonate river. Water discharge, temperature and insolation, each with a different time lag, as well as substrates and nutrients were examined in order to explain macroalgal biomass variability. Twenty-four macroalgae genera were recorded with Spirogyra, Cladophora, Vaucheria and Oedogonium as abundant. Through redundancy analysis the macroalgal community composition exhibited significant differences, between the sampling sites and also from one year to the next. Water discharge (time-lag = 5 days) and temperature (time-lag = 20 days) both significantly explained macroalgal biomass variability, highlighting differences in the time lag of the macroalgal community's ecological response to environmental changes. Spatial segregation was observed within the wide riverbed due to habitat variability, allowing co-occurrence in the development of ecologically different taxa within each sampling site. The high nitrate concentrations as compared with the particular low phosphorus concentrations led to especially high DIN/SRP ratios (248 ± 103, n = 18). The N/P ratios in algal tissues were high (25 ± 16, n = 26) and indicated P-limitation. The differences in DIN/SRP and N/P ratios suggest additional nutrient sources than open water such as groundwater inputs.  相似文献

Inadequate intake of the recommended five-a-day fruit and vegetable portions might contribute to increased cardiovascular disease risk. We assessed the effects of dietary intake of a blackcurrant juice drink, rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, on oxidative stress and vascular function. This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group study of 66 healthy adults who habitually consume <2 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Participants were randomly allocated to consume 250 ml of placebo (flavored water) or low or high blackcurrant juice drink four times a day for 6 weeks. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and plasma concentrations of F2-isoprostanes and vitamin C were measured. In the high blackcurrant juice drink group FMD increased significantly (5.8±3.1 to 6.9±3.1%, P=0.022) compared with the placebo group (6.0±2.2 to 5.1±2.4%). Plasma vitamin C concentration increased significantly in the low (38.6±17.6 to 49.4±21.0 µmol/L, P<0.001) and high (34.6±20.4 to 73.8±23.3 µmol/L, P<0.001) blackcurrant juice drink groups compared with the placebo group (38.1±21.0 to 29.0±17.6 µmol/L). F2-isoprostane concentrations were significantly lower in the high blackcurrant juice drink group (225±64 pg/ml) compared with the low blackcurrant juice drink (257±69 pg/ml, P=0.002) and placebo group (254±59 pg/ml, P=0.003). At follow-up, changes in plasma vitamin C correlated significantly with changes in FMD (r=0.308, P=0.044). Consumption of blackcurrant juice drink high in vitamin C and polyphenols can decrease oxidative stress and improve vascular health in individuals with habitually low dietary fruit and vegetable intake.  相似文献

Previous investigations have been demonstrated that night-time water flux may increase or remain unchanged at low mineral nutrient availability. At the same time, it is a well-known fact that night-time water flux is relatively high in fast-growing species, which typically grow in fertile soil. To test the impact of soil nutrient deficiency on night-time water flux and fine-root acclimation in saplings of hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × Populus tremuloides Michx.), a growth chamber experiment was carried out. We set up a hypothesis that night-time sap flux density (F) and night-time water use percentage from daytime water use (NWU) are more intense in fertile conditions, in order to enhance or sustain the high intrinsic growth potential of hybrid aspen. The main limiting element in the low nutrient availability treatment (low-n) was nitrogen. The nitrogen concentrations of leaves and fine-roots exhibited the strongest (R2 = 0.95; P < 0.001) positive relationship with NWU and foliar biomass. Both the night-time F and NWU were several times higher in the case of fertilized soil (high-n treatment) compared to low-n treatment (P < 0.01). The differences in nocturnal (and in diurnal) F disappeared at the end of the period of sap flow measurements, when the foliage area of trees was almost full-grown. Endogenous increase in water flux during predawn hours was observable only in the high-n treatment. Significantly greater NWU (P < 0.01) and specific fine-root length (P < 0.05), but smaller fine-root biomass (P < 0.05) in saplings of the high-n treatment potentially allow plants to use mass flow in soil more efficiently for transportation nutrients towards roots and to decrease construction costs for fine-root biomass production. Our results suggest that decreased night-time water flux as a result of strong nutrient (especially nitrogen) deficit could be characteristic to fast-growing tree species, which are adapted to grow in fertile soil.  相似文献

Indigenous leafy vegetables possess high horticultural potential based on their long utilisation history by local communities across Africa. Phytochemical and antioxidant properties of 50% aqueous methanol and water extracts of three indigenous as well as two commercial leafy vegetables commonly consumed in southern Africa were evaluated. The total extractable phenolic content was highest for Amarathus dubius (5.16 ± 0.12 mg GAE/g DW) followed by Cleome gynandra (3.94 ± 0.09 mg GAE/g DW). Total flavonoid concentration was highest for A. dubius (3.89 ± 0.28 mg CE/g DW) followed by C. gynandra (2.19 ± 0.11 mg CE/g DW) and Cucurbita maxima (1.55 ± 0.04 mg CE/g DW). No proanthocyanidins were detected in C. maxima and Brassica napus cv Covo whereas low concentrations were recorded in other vegetables. Total saponins were variable across the evaluated extracts, with the highest concentrations recorded for B. napus cv Covo (83.2 ± 16.58 mg DE/g DW). Total iridoid content was highest for C. gynandra (9.14 ± 0.20 mg HE/g DW). More potent DPPH radical scavenging activities were exhibited by 50% aqueous methanol extracts compared to water extracts. A similar trend was observed in the ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay. The antioxidant activity based on the rate of β-carotene bleaching was higher for water extracts compared to 50% aqueous methanol extracts. The indigenous vegetables evaluated in this study had higher levels of phytochemicals and also exhibited more potent antioxidant activity compared to the commercial varieties. These findings not only suggest the importance of the indigenous vegetables in a healthy diet, but also provide a motivation for exploring their horticultural potential.  相似文献

Organisms employ a wide array of physiological and behavioral responses in an effort to endure stressful environmental conditions. For many marine invertebrates, physiological and/or behavioral performance is dependent on physical conditions in the fluid environment. Although factors such as water temperature and velocity can elicit changes in respiration and feeding, the manner in which these processes integrate to shape growth remains unclear. In a growth experiment, juvenile barnacles (Balanus glandula) were raised in dockside, once-through flow chambers at water velocities of 2 versus 19 cm s−1 and temperatures of 11.5 versus 14 °C. Over 37 days, growth rates (i.e., shell basal area) increased with faster water velocities and higher temperatures. Barnacles at high flows had shorter feeding appendages (i.e., cirri), suggesting that growth patterns are unlikely related to plastic responses in cirral length. A separate experiment in the field confirmed patterns of temperature- and flow-dependent growth over 41 days. Outplanted juvenile barnacles exposed to the faster water velocities (32±1 and 34±1 cm s−1; mean±SE) and warm temperatures (16.81±0.05 °C) experienced higher growth compared to individuals at low velocities (1±1 cm s−1) and temperatures (13.67±0.02 °C). Growth data were consistent with estimates from a simple energy budget model based on previously measured feeding and respiration response curves that predicted peak growth at moderate temperatures (15 °C) and velocities (20–30 cm s−1). Low growth is expected at both low and high velocities due to lower encounter rates with suspended food particles and lower capture efficiencies respectively. At high temperatures, growth is likely limited by high metabolic costs, whereas slow growth at low temperatures may be a consequence of low oxygen availability and/or slow cirral beating and low feeding rates. Moreover, these results advocate for approaches that consider the combined effects of multiple stressors and suggest that both increases and decreases in temperature or flow impact barnacle growth, but through different physiological and behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

The Yellow River Delta wetland, located at the southern coast of Bohai Gulf, provides important ecosystem services such as flood control, water purification, biodiversity conservation, nutrient removal and carbon sequestration, shoreline stabilization, tourism attraction and wetland products maintains in the Yellow River Delta. This study assessed how agricultural activities in a reclamation wetland changed soil pH, soil electric conductivity, soil nutrient and soil particle size as compared to natural vegetation by using a combination of field experiments and lab analysis. The vegetation type included adjacent alfalfa field (Medicago sativa), cotton field (Gossypium spp.), Chinese tamarisk shrub (Tamarix chinensis), and reed marsh (Phragmites sage). The results indicated that the soil pH was higher (pH > 8) in alfalfa field and cotton field, and alfalfa field and reed marsh had significant function in reducing soil salt content, soil electric conductivity of alfalfa field at 0–30 cm were 140.38 ± 14.36, 114.48 ± 14.36, 125.30 ± 11.37 μs/cm. The effect of different vegetation types on soil nutrient was significant (P < 0.05). Soil organic matter at 0–10 cm in Chinese tamarisk shrub and reed marsh was 21.66 ± 3.82 g/kg and 16.51 ± 4.60 g/kg, which was higher than that of alfalfa field (10.47 ± 2.36 g/kg) and cotton field (9.82 ± 1.27 g/kg), but soil total nitrogen content in alfalfa field was the highest, which is significantly higher than that of cotton field, Chinese tamarisk shrub and reed marsh(P < 0.05), the content of soil total nitrogen at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm was 7.67 ± 0.38 g/kg and 5.97 ± 0.51 g/kg, respectively, while the content of available P and available K was reversed. The difference of soil particle size between layers was not significant (P > 0.05), the sand content of Chinese tamarisk shrub soils in 0–10 cm was the highest, the next was alfalfa field and cotton field, and the content of silt and clay in reed marsh was higher than the others. The correlation and significant degree between soil particle size and soil nutrient was related with vegetation types, and soil organic matter was significantly positively correlated with soil silt and clay content on the alfalfa field. The results demonstrated that wetland cultivation was one of the most important factors influencing on the nutrient fate and reserves in soil, which could lead to rapid nutrient release and slow restoration through abandon cultivation. Consequently, compared with cotton field, alfalfa field is more favorable to sustainable management of wetland cultivation in the Yellow River Delta. It should be considered in wetland restoration projects planning.  相似文献

Nerolidol is a sesquiterpene present in the essential oils of many plants, approved by the U.S. FDA as a food flavoring agent. Nerolidol interferes with the isoprenoid biosynthetic pathway in the apicoplast of P. falciparum. In the present study, the in vitro growth of four Babesia species was significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited in the presence of nerolidol (IC50s values = 21 ± 1, 29.6 ± 3, 26.9 ± 2, and 23.1 ± 1 µM for B. bovis, B. bigemina, B. ovata, and B. caballi, respectively). Parasites from treated cultures failed to grow in the subsequent viability test at a concentration of 50 µM. Nerolidol significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited the growth of B. microti at the dosage of 10 and 100 mg/kg BW, while the inhibition was low compared with the high doses used. Therefore, nerolidol could not be used as a chemotherapeutic drug for babesiosis.  相似文献

Silicon improves salinity tolerance in wheat plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Durum wheat (Triticum durum cv. Gediz-75) and bread wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Izmir-85) were grown in a complete nutrient solution in a growth room to investigate effect of silicone supplied to the nutrient solution on plants grown at salt stress. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of NaCl in nutrient solution, 0 and 100 mM, and two levels of silicone (Si) in nutrient solution, 0.25 and 0.50 mM, as Na2SiO3. The plants grown at 100 mM NaCl produced less dry matter and chlorophyll content than those without NaCl. Supplementary Si at both 0.25 and 0.5 mM ameliorated the negative effects of salinity on plant dry matter and chlorophyll content. Membrane permeability and proline content in leaves increased with addition of 100 mM NaCl and these increases were decreased with Si treatments. Sodium (Na) concentration in plant tissues increased in both leaves and roots of plants in the high NaCl treatment and Si treatments lowered significantly the concentrations of Na in both leaves and roots. Bread wheat was more tolerant to salinity than durum wheat. The accumulation of Na in roots indicates a possible mechanism whereby bread wheat copes with salinity in the rooting medium and/or may indicate the existence of an inhibition mechanism of Na transport to leaves. Concentrations of both Ca and K were lower in the plants grown at high NaCl than in those in the control treatment and these two element concentrations were increased by Si treatments in both shoots and roots but remained lower than control values in most cases.  相似文献

A pot experiment was carried out with tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. “Target F1” in a mixture of peat, perlite, and sand (1:1:1) to investigate the effects of supplementary calcium sulphate on plants grown at high NaCl concentration (75 mM). The treatments were: (i) control (C), nutrient solution alone; (ii) salt treatment (C + S), 75 mM NaCl; (iii) salt plus calcium treatment 1 (C + S + Ca1), 75 mM NaCl plus additional mixture of 2.5 mM CaSO4 in nutrient solution; (iv) salt plus calcium treatment 2 (C + S + Ca2), 75 mM NaCl plus additional mixture of 5 mM CaSO4 in nutrient solution. The plants grown under salt stress produced low dry matter, fruit weight, and relative water content than those grown in standard nutrient solution. Supplemental calcium sulphate added to nutrient solution containing salt significantly improved growth and physiological variables affected by salt stress (e.g. plant growth, fruit yield, and membrane permeability) and also increased leaf K+, Ca2+, and N in tomato plants. The effects of supplemental CaSO4 in maintaining membrane permeability, increasing concentrations of Ca2+, N, and K+ and reducing concentration of Na+ (because of cation competition in root zone) in leaves could offer an economical and simple solution to tomato crop production problems caused by high salinity.  相似文献

The toxic HAB dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (Davis) G. Hansen & Ø. Moestrup (formerly Gymnodinium breve) exhibits a migratory pattern atypical of dinoflagellates: cells concentrate in a narrow (∼0–5 cm) band at the water surface during daylight hours due to phototactic and negative geotactic responses, then disperse downward at night via non-tactic, random swimming. The hypothesis that this daylight surface aggregation behavior significantly influences bacterial and algal productivity and nutrient cycling within blooms was tested during a large, high biomass (chlorophyll a >19 μg L−1) K. brevis bloom in October of 2001 by examining the effects of this surface layer aggregation on inorganic and organic nutrient concentrations, cellular nitrogen uptake, primary and bacterial productivity and the stable isotopic signature (δ15N, δ13C) of particulate material. During daylight hours, concentrations of K. brevis and chlorophyll a in the 0–5 cm surface layer were enhanced by 131% (±241%) and 32.1% (±86.1%) respectively compared with an integrated water sample collection over a 0–1 m depth. Inorganic (NH4, NO3+2, PO4, SiO4) and organic (DOP, DON) nutrient concentrations were also elevated within the surface layer as was both bacterial and primary productivity. Uptake of nitrogen (NH4+, NO3, urea, dissolved primary amines, glutamine and alanine) compounds by K. brevis was greatest in the surface layer for all compounds tested, with the greatest enhancement evident in urea uptake rates, from 0.08 × 10−5 ng N K. brevis cell−1 h−1 to 3.1 × 10−5 ng N K. brevis cell−1 h−1. These data suggests that this surface aggregation layer is not only an area of concentrated cells within K. brevis blooms, but also an area of increased biological activity and nutrient cycling, especially of nitrogen. Additionally, the classic dinoflagellate migration paradigm of a downward migration for access to elevated NO3 concentrations during the dark period may not apply to certain dinoflagellates such as K. brevis in oligotrophic nearshore areas with no significant nitricline. For these dinoflagellates, concentration within a narrow surface layer in blooms during daylight hours may enhance nutrient supply through biological cycling and photochemical nutrient regeneration.  相似文献

Neotyphodium coenophialum [Morgan-Jones and Gams], grows in the above-ground parts of tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.]. It is an asexual fungus that is transmitted through seed of its host plant. This grass/endophyte association is enhanced by the protection of the host from herbivory and improved drought stress. We investigated how a decline in leaf-level stomatal conductance impacts the instantaneous water-use efficiency (WUE), in endophyte-infected (E+) versus non-infected (E?) Kentucky-31 tall fescue grasses grown in a controlled environmental chamber over a 10-week period. Grasses were cut at 6 weeks after germination and allowed to regrow under high and low soil moisture availability. One week after cutting, soil moisture was allowed to decline in the low water treatment for 2 weeks until severe stress was demonstrated through a decline in stomatal conductance to less than 100 mmol m?2 s?1. We found no differences in WUE between E+ and E? plants when water was not limiting while higher WUE was exhibited in E+ plants relative to E? plants under severe drought stress. The E? plants showed an 18-fold reduction in mean WUE and a 70-fold reduction in photosynthesis under drought stress, while there was no change in WUE and only a fourfold decline in photosynthesis between well-watered and drought stressed E+ plants at 21 days. While there were no differences in the rates of transpiration between E+ and E? plants under severe drought stress, differences in WUE can be attributed mainly to higher photosynthetic rates of E+ than E? plants. The difference in photosynthetic rates between E+ and E? plants under drought conditions could not be explained by differences in stomatal conductance and Rubisco (EC 4.1.1.39) activities.  相似文献

In this study, chitosan was used as a flocculant to harvest freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. The recovery efficiency of C. vulgaris was tested at various chitosan concentrations. 120 mg/L of chitosan showed the highest efficiency (92 ± 0.4%) within 3 min. The maximum concentration factor of 10 was also achieved at this dose of chitosan. The harvesting efficiency was pH dependent. pH 6.0 showed the highest harvesting efficiency (99 ± 0.5%). Measurement of zeta-potential confirmed that the flocculation was induced by charge neutralization. This study showed that a biopolymer, chitosan, can be a promising flocculant due to its high efficacy, low dose requirements, and short settling time.  相似文献

The recruitment and mortality of Melaleuca quinquenervia seedlings were evaluated over a 3-year period in a seasonally inundated wetland in the western Everglades region. The mean (±SE) density of seedlings/saplings m?1 declined from 64.8 (±4.5) to 0.5 (±0.2) over the 3 years, a population reduction of 99.2%. Four distinct water regimes characterized this site: dry, dry to wet transition, flooded, and wet to dry transition. Seedling recruitment was highest in the dry to wet transition and lowest in the flooded water regime, while mortality was highest under flooded and dry water regimes. The mean estimate of population growth (λ) across water regimes was 0.64 ± 0.05 indicating negative population growth. Elimination of introduced insect herbivores using insecticides did not reduce mortality of recruited M. quinquenervia seedlings/saplings indicating that direct herbivory was not responsible for the decline in seedling density. On the other hand, a mean of only 0.2 (±0.03) viable seeds m?2 d?1 fell into the plots, an amount considerably lower than in previous studies. We submit that change in the invasion trajectory M. quinquenervia was most likely caused by reduced seed inputs from aerial seed banks depleted by insect herbivory rather than direct herbivory on seedlings. This may indicate a fundamental alteration of M. quinquenervia population dynamics ultimately resulting in a less invasive and, therefore, less ecologically damaging species.  相似文献

Massive blooms of the dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides occur annually in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The initiation of blooms and their physical transport has been documented and the location of bloom initiation was identified during the 2007 and 2008 blooms. In the present study we combined daily sampling of nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton abundance at a fixed station to determine physical and chemical controls on bloom formation and enhanced underway water quality monitoring (DATAFLOW) during periods when blooms are known to occur. While C. polykrikoides did not reach bloom concentrations until late June during 2009, vegetative cells were present at low concentrations in the Elizabeth River (4 cells ml−1) as early as May 27. Subsequent samples collected from the Lafayette River documented the increase in C. polykrikoides abundance in the upper branches of the Lafayette River from mid-June to early July, when discolored waters were first observed. The 2009 C. polykrikoides bloom began in the Lafayette River when water temperatures were consistently above 25 °C and during a period of calm winds, neap tides, high positive tidal residuals, low nutrient concentrations, and a low dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) ratio. The pulsing of nutrients associated with intense but highly localized storm activity during the summer months when water temperatures are above 25 °C may play a role in the initiation of C. polykrikoides blooms. The upper Lafayette River appears to be an important area for initiation of algal blooms that then spread to other connected waterways.  相似文献
