This study investigates whether the process of pressing and drying a macrophyte host affects community structure and composition of epiphytic diatom communities. Epiphytic diatoms on submerged macrophytes from carbonate rivers and streams in southern Bavaria, Germany were sampled in order to study community structure and composition. Simultaneously, a specimen of the submerged macrophyte was taken to create a collection of dried plants. After 6months of preservation, diatom samples were taken from the herbarium macrophytes. Detrended correspondence analysis, diversity and evenness results indicate that recent and dried communities are indistinguishable. These results suggest that epiphytic diatom communities sampled from historic herbarium macrophytes can be utilised as bioindicators to assess former water quality.  相似文献

Diatoms have been long collected from the Southern Ocean but almost no data exist for epiphytic communities, despite their high ecological significance as an important food source in Antarctic coastal food chains. Here, we present a first growth form analysis of diatoms associated with rhodophyte hosts from Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica. We performed this study to gather baseline information on the species composition of epiphytic diatom communities, determine the influence of some environmental variables on the diatom distribution patterns, and assess the caveats that must be taken into account in terms of sampling design. Macroalgal material was collected during the Italian Antarctic expeditions between 1990 and 2004. Epiphytic diatoms were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. In terms of growth forms, there were no significant differences between the diatom communities on the different macroalgal host species. Motile (mainly small-celled Navicula perminuta and other Navicula spp.) and adnate (Cocconeis spp.) diatoms dominated the community throughout the study period. Many of the macroalgal blades examined were also covered by epiphytic animals (calcareous bryozoans, hydroids) over most of their surface, with a significant effect on the associated diatom community structure. Our findings suggest that the bio-physicochemical characteristics of each sampling site affected the epiphytic diatom communities more than the substrate type provided by the macroalgal host or the sampling depth.  相似文献

Our understanding of diatoms, one of the most important Antarctic primary producers, is based mostly on investigations of plankton, sea-ice, and sediment samples. Herein, we contribute to the limited research devoted to benthic Antarctic diatoms by presenting a study on epiphytic diatom communities sampled in two remote Antarctic regions: Admiralty Bay (maritime Antarctica, Antarctic Peninsula) and Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea). Recent studies have demonstrated that the most critical factor for the local epiphytic diatom communities was the nature of the substrate. In order to eliminate this factor so we could evaluate other potential controls, we sampled epiphytic diatoms from only one substrate that is common to both regions: the macroalgae Plocamium cartilagineum (L.) Dixon. Thalli of P. cartilagineum and their associated microalgal community was collected in January 2011 (Admiralty Bay) and 2012 (Terra Nova Bay) from a water depth of 5–25 m. Dehydrated macroalgal pieces were placed on stubs and sputter-coated, which allowed observation of diatoms attached to the substrate in their original position using scanning electron microscopy. A total of 72 taxa were observed, of which 31 taxa were common to both regions. Cell abundance and diatom growth form dominance were significantly different in Admiralty Bay and Terra Nova Bay samples. Total diatom abundance was higher in Admiralty Bay samples, dominated by adnate diatoms (Cocconeis spp.), but the number of taxa found as well as the values of ecological indices were higher for samples from the Ross Sea, where motile forms were dominant (Navicula spp.). Our results suggest that Antarctic shallow-water benthic habitats may present a high degree of microniche heterogeneity and highlight the need of fine-scale analyses in microbial studies. We also suggest grazers as a factor that contributes greatly to the observed differences.  相似文献

We compared the use of epilithic, epiphytic, and epipelic diatom communities in stream biomonitoring by investigating species composition and relationships with measured water quality variables in two tributaries of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Although ordination showed some separation of the epilithon from other habitats, clear habitat preferences and seasonality were not identified. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that measured water quality variables explained the major gradients in the diatom data for all three habitats. The diatoms from each habitat were strongly related to alkalinity, suspended solids, biological oxygen demand and conductivity, and in addition, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms showed significant relationships with total phosphorus. It was concluded that although some species were more abundant in one habitat than the others, the community structure of the epilithic, epiphytic and epipelic habitats from these streams was not consistently different. The results indicate no apparent benefit to sampling discrete habitats for water quality monitoring using diatoms, however, the best relationship are obtained using the sum of the diatom data from all three habitats.  相似文献

The “All Taxa Biodiversity Inventories” (ATBIs) project coordinated by the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT) aims to achieve a baseline biodiversity assessment of flora and fauna in those regions characterized by a lack of knowledge and a high potential for biodiversity. Within the framework of the ATBIs, the aim of this study was to analyse the diatom flora and ecology of a complex of freshwater ecosystems in the Maritime Alps Natural Park (Italy), designated as a Special area of Conservation under the European Habitat Directive. We sampled epilithic and epiphytic diatoms in different habitats in 24 sites: shallow lake, springs, and streams. Our analysis resulted in a list of 138 diatom taxa, highlighting the great biodiversity and the complex structure of the investigated diatom communities. The taxa list included a wide range of uncommon species, including some recorded for the first time in North-Western Italy. Among the different habitats the highest level of diversity was found in the more lentic waters, in particular in limnocrene springs. These results show that the diatom communities of pristine and undisturbed high-mountain environments are rich and complex, despite the severe environmental conditions.  相似文献

A checklist based on net samples taken twice weekly from 2001 until May 2003 is presented. Identification is based on observations under direct light microscopy and after taking some organisms in culture. The checklist includes 227 taxa observed at the Helgoland Reede sampling station. One hundred and thirty-two species of diatoms from 53 genera and 95 species of dinoflagellates from 35 genera have been recorded from net samples and cultures. Thirty-five diatom and 28 dinoflagellate taxa were documented in the Helgoland phytoplankton for the first time. The list does not claim to be complete, but provides an updated list of the taxa found at Helgoland and, for convenience, also includes data published for different adjacent areas.Communicated by K. Water quality degradation is a serious concern for the St. Lawrence River. While some environmental data are available for the St. Lawrence ecosystem, long-term monitoring data are generally lacking. To infer past environmental changes, we undertook a paleolimnological assessment of diatom assemblages preserved in four 210Pb- and 137Cs-dated sediment cores from two fluvial lakes in the river, and used diatom transfer functions to infer past shoreline habitat characteristics. At sites in Lake Saint-François, a fluvial lake downstream from Cornwall, water quality decreased this century in response to human impacts (e.g. macrophyte density and nutrient levels increased). These trends were apparent from an increase in epiphytic diatom taxa, followed by an increase in eutrophic planktonic taxa. Water quality, however, appears to have improved somewhat in response to rehabilitation measures during the last two decades. From a sediment core near Montréal (Lake Saint-Louis), we also noted a large proportion of eutrophic and epiphytic taxa, but less evidence was recorded of a recent improvement in water quality. The diatom-based inference model for habitat characteristics appeared to reconstruct environmental conditions in the St. Lawrence River during the last century. The most notable shift has been an increase in diatom taxa commonly associated with macrophyte substrates. Trends in some of the planktonic diatoms were similar to those recorded in paleolimnological investigations from Lake Ontario, but cores from the river also may be reflecting local environments. This study shows that diatom-based paleolimnological studies are possible in large river systems, if coring sites (e.g. fluvial lakes) are carefully selected.  相似文献

The selection of one or more river substrata for the collection of benthic diatoms is fundamental to any monitoring or research programme because it can potentially bias the diatom data set. In the wet/dry tropics of Australia, where the use of benthic diatoms for river health assessment is in its infancy, the comparability of diatom assemblages on river substrata has been assessed. Benthic diatoms were sampled from seven river sites, with a range of ionic chemistries (conductivities 27–6500 μS cm−1) but low nutrient concentrations. At each site, triplicate samples were collected from 3 to 6 substrata. The diatom assemblages sampled were: epilithon (assemblages on rock), epiphytes on macroalgae and macrophytes, epidendron (assemblages on wood), epipsammon (assemblages on sand), epipelon (assemblages on mud) and bacterial slime. The variability between substrate assemblages, at each site, were assessed according to the following: (1) a multivariate analysis of diatom assemblages, (2) ANOVA tests of species richness, (3) ANOVA tests of the relative abundance of common species (defined by an abundance of at least 10% in any one sample), and (4) a comparison of the number of species unique to a substrate. A total of 198 taxa were identified, with some taxa common to temperate Australia. Common species were found on all substrata, with sometimes statistically significantly different relative abundances. Taxa unique to a substrate had low relative abundances (0.1–2%), were most often found on only one replicate, and are unlikely to be substrate specific because many are known to occur on other substrata. The assemblages on hard substrata, epilithon and epidendron, were found to be most similar. Diatom assemblages on macroalgal and macrophyte substrata, compared to other substrata, were highly variable. This is attributed to the loss of diatoms from grazing and sloughing, followed by recolonisation of newly exposed substrate. Other assemblages, notably epipsammon, were similar to epilithon and epidendron but sometimes differed in their relative abundance of common species. The principal finding of the study was the similarity of the epilithon and epidendron, which are considered to be indistinguishable. Rock and wood hard substrata can be substituted for one another during field surveys, thereby increasing the number of potential sample sites available for monitoring activities that standardise to a hard substrate.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of planktonic, sediment-associated and epiphytic diatoms among 58 sites in Biscayne Bay, Florida was examined in order to identify diatom taxa indicative of different salinity and water quality conditions, geographic locations and habitat types. Assessments were made in contrasting wet and dry seasons in order to develop robust assessment models for salinity and water quality for this region. We found that diatom assemblages differed between nearshore and offshore locations, especially during the wet season when salinity and nutrient gradients were steepest. In the dry season, habitat structure was primary determinant of diatom assemblage composition. Among a suite of physicochemical variables, water depth and sediment total phosphorus (STP) were most strongly associated with diatom assemblage composition in the dry season, while salinity and water total phosphorus (TP) were more important in the wet season. We used indicator species analysis (ISA) to identify taxa that were most abundant and frequent at nearshore and offshore locations, in planktonic, epiphytic and benthic habitats and in contrasting salinity and water quality regimes. Because surface water concentrations of salts, total phosphorus, nitrogen (TN) and organic carbon (TOC) are partly controlled by water management in this region, diatom-based models were produced to infer these variables in modern and retrospective assessments of management-driven changes. Weighted averaging (WA) and weighted averaging partial least squares (WA-PLS) regressions produced reliable estimates of salinity, TP, TN and TOC from diatoms (r2 = 0.92, 0.77, 0.77 and 0.71, respectively). Because of their sensitivity to salinity, nutrient and TOC concentrations diatom assemblages should be useful in developing protective nutrient criteria for estuaries and coastal waters of Florida.  相似文献

A study of the epilithic diatom, macroalgal and macrophyte communities from a spring-fed stream in Ontario, Canada was undertaken from September 1996 to July 1997. The relative abundance of the epilithic diatom flora, percent cover of macroalgal and macrophyte taxa, and several physical and chemical stream conditions were monitored along a 20-m stretch at each of four sites, approximately every 2 months. Several stream conditions were relatively constant over the sampling period (pH, maximum width and maximum depth), while others exhibited a distinct seasonal pattern (water temperature, specific conductance and daylength) and some fluctuated strongly with no discernable seasonal pattern (turbidity, current velocity). A total of 124 taxa were identified from the four sites, including 79 epilithic diatoms, three macroalgal diatom species (large gelatinous masses), one cyanobacterium, two red algae, eight green algae, one chrysophyte alga, one tribophyte alga, three mosses, three horsetails and 23 angiosperm taxa. Species richness was positively correlated to stream channel maximum width and depth, indicating that the total number of species tends to increase in a downstream direction. Distribution of several diatom and macroalgal species was significantly correlated to stream conditions (e.g. Gomphonema parvulum and Phormidium subfuscum with current velocity); however, the vast majority of species did not display seasonal variation in abundance that could be explained by changes in stream conditions. Many of the taxa identified from Blue Springs Creek are common elsewhere in North America.  相似文献

The large variation in size and shape in diatoms is shown by morphometric measurements of 515 benthic and pelagic diatom species from the Baltic Sea area. The largest mean cell dimension (mostly the apical axis) varied between 4.2 and 653 μm, cell surface area between 55 and 344,000 μm2, and cell volume between 21 and 14.2 × 106μm3. The shape‐related index, length to width ratio, was between 1.0 and 63.3 and the shape‐ and size‐related index, surface area to volume ratio, was between 0.02 and 3.13. Diatom community analysis by multivariate statistics is usually based on counts of a fixed number of diatom valves with species scores irrespective of cell size. This procedure underestimates the large species for two reasons. First, the importance of a species with higher cell volume is usually larger in a community. Second, larger species usually have lower abundances and their occurrence in the diatom counts is stochastic. This article shows that co‐occurring small and large diatom species can respond very differently to environmental constraints. Large epiphytic diatoms responded most to macroalgal host species and small epiphytic diatoms most to environmental conditions at the sampling site. Large epilithic diatoms responded strongly to salinity, whereas small epilithic diatoms did so less clearly. The conclusion is that different scale‐dependent responses are possible within one data set. The results from the test data also show that important ecological information from diatom data can be missed when the large species are neglected or underestimated.  相似文献

Analysis was made of the species composition, egg number per female and the size-frequency of Amphipoda living on the dominating submerged macrophytes (Potamogeton perfoliatus and Myriophyllum spicatum) at 10 sampling stations of the northern and southern shoreline of Lake Balaton. The dominating Amphipoda at each sampling station was Corophium curvispinum (85.9–99.8%, mean: 96.6%). Besides this, two other species — Dikerogammarus haemobaphes and D. villosus — were also found in the samples. The two Dikerogammarus species were found in highest percentage near Keszthely (14.1 %); at the other places studied they were under 5%. The number of Amphipoda individuals per g macrophyte dry weight ranged from 5 to 574; the lowest value was found near Keszthely, the highest near B. Mária. The developmental stages of the C. curvispinum population differ in different parts of Lake Balaton: the adult (male and female) specimens occurred in highest percentage near Keszthely. The mean number of eggs per C. curvispinum female ranged from 2.4 to 6.3, showing differences at the different sampling stations. Regarding the two Dikerogammarus species, there were many more D. haemobaphes than D. villosus individuals at almost every station (mean: 75%). The mean number of eggs per egg-carrying female of D. haemobaphes was 11.7, being 19.1 for D. villosus. The total biomass of amphipods (in mg animal dry weight/g macrophyte dry weight) ranged from 1.2 to 59.8. The lowest value was observed near Keszthely (the most hypertrophic basin of Lake Balaton), the highest value near B. Maria  相似文献

Diatom Flora of the Grand River,Ontario, Canada   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Summary This paper describes the diatom flora of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Samples were collected systematically from the river over a period of several years at tweleve stations. The diatom flora of the river is typical of temperate alkaline rivers. The flora is rich in species and variaties, and is similar to that from many parts from North Eastern United States. A total of 273 taxa of diatoms were identified. There is a tendency for the number of species per sample to increase downstream. The flora of the estuary in characteristic with a great variety of taxa occuring in small numbers. Most of the species are alkaliphilous and indifferent in the halolian spectra. Part of Ph. The interplay among microorganisms profoundly impacts biogeochemical cycles in the ocean. Culture-based work has illustrated the diversity of diatom–prokaryote interactions, but the question of whether these associations can affect the spatial distribution of microbial communities is open. Here, we investigated the relationship between assemblages of diatoms and of heterotrophic prokaryotes in surface waters of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean in early spring. The community composition of diatoms and that of total and active prokaryotes were different among the major ocean zones investigated. We found significant relationships between compositional changes of diatoms and of prokaryotes. In contrast, spatial changes in the prokaryotic community composition were not related to geographic distance and to environmental parameters when the effect of diatoms was accounted for. Diatoms explained 30% of the variance in both the total and the active prokaryotic community composition in early spring in the Southern Ocean. Using co-occurrence analyses, we identified a large number of highly significant correlations between abundant diatom species and prokaryotic taxa. Our results show that key diatom species of the Southern Ocean are each associated with a distinct prokaryotic community, suggesting that diatom assemblages contribute to shaping the habitat type for heterotrophic prokaryotes.  相似文献

Although benthic diatoms are used to assess river water quality, there are few data on the rate at which diatom assemblages react to changes in water quality. The aim of this study was to assess the reaction time of diatoms and to discuss the changes occurring during water quality improvement on the basis of their autecological characteristics. In order to simulate this improvement, diatom-dominated biofilms grown on artificial sandstone substrata were transferred from several polluted rivers to an unpolluted river. They were sampled three times: before transfer and 1 and 2 months after transfer. The ecology and growth-forms of the taxa explained most of the changes in species composition observed during the experiment. Adnate diatoms gradually replaced motile and stalked taxa. Gomphonema parvulum, a stalked diatom positioned vertically in the biofilm, is adapted for light and space competition in high-density algal biofilms. When transferred to an unpolluted site, this growth-form is less competitive and does not tolerate the high grazing pressure. Fistulifera saprophila is a single celled motile diatom, living in organic matrices. When the artificial substrata were transferred to the unpolluted site, this particular ecological niche disappeared quickly. On the other hand, Achnanthidium minutissimum, which is considered to be cosmopolitan and an early colonizer, increased during the first month of transfer and then decreased. It was gradually replaced by A. biasolettianum, which was the taxon best suited to this pristine stream. The changes observed differed between treatments depending on the species composition and architecture of the biofilms. In particular, biofilms dominated by stalked and motile diatoms were more quickly modified than those dominated by small motile diatoms. The diatom index reflects these changes, and its values showed that about 60 days following a water quality improvement were necessary for transferred diatom assemblages to reach diatom index values similar as those at the unpolluted river.  相似文献

Large epiphytic and epilithic diatom species hosting other diatoms were observed in several fresh- and brackish water sites in Southern California. The most commonly encountered hosts were species forming long filaments attached to rocks or macroalgae, Hydrosera whampoensis (Schwarz) Hendey, Melosira varians Agardh, Pleurosira laevis (Ehrenberg) Compere and Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg. These large diatoms often had smaller diatoms attached, usually to the girdle bands and occasionally to the mucilage pads connecting the cells. For example, cells of T. musica were observed supporting growth of a diverse diatom assemblage composed of species of the genera Achnanthes , Achnanthidium , Amphora , Cocconeis and Tabularia; Synedra sp. was attached to M. varians and B. paxillifer; and Cocconeis placentula was seen on H. whampoensis. Thus, large epiphytic and epilithic diatoms seem to provide suitable sites for attachment of small epiphytic diatom species, and it appears that this phenomenon is more common than previously thought.  相似文献

The first floristic inventory of benthic diatoms is provided for the Bahia Magdalena-Bahia Almejas lagoon system. Samplings were carried out during November of 1999. The oxydized samples were mounted permanently. Eighty six diatom taxa were identified, out of which 59 are new records for the Bahia Magdalena area, and 12 taxa are new for the Baja California peninsula. Taxa recorded previously as rare in other substrata are common or abundant on the epiphytic macroalgae of mangrove prop roots. Other species are mainly epipelic forms, while 24 are commonly found as tychoplankton in the area. Certain taxa appear to be characteristic of mangrove systems in general.  相似文献

The ability of deposit feeders to utilise the pool of live planktonic diatoms in the sediment was investigated after the spring bloom in 2001 and 2002 at four sediment sites in the aphotic zone in the Kattegat. Seven species of deposit-feeding bivalves, gastropods and polychaetes were allowed to defecate in containers with filtered seawater. A total of 22 containers were set up holding between 3 and 32 animals, grouped by station and taxa. When defecation was completed, the animals were re-introduced to different stocks of homogenised sediment which were manipulated by addition of luminophores and spores of the diatom Chaetoceros diadema, and the faeces again collected and analysed. Our analysis included the number of germinable planktonic diatoms, measured by the dilution extinction method, and the concentrations of the algae pigments fucoxanthin and chl a, in the faeces samples, in the sediment stocks and in the sediment at the sampling location. Comparison between the sediment composition at the sampling locations, and the composition of the corresponding faeces, showed that the concentration of germinable diatoms averaged about 50,000 g−1 dry weight (DW) in the surface sediment as well as in the faeces in 2001, while in 2002, the average concentration was about 390,000 g−1 DW in both faeces and in the sediment. A similar comparison in the second part of the experiments also showed that the diatoms in the sediment were unaffected by gut passage and the added spores of C. diadema germinated in the same quantity in the faeces as in the sediment. The taxonomic composition of the diatoms in the faeces matched the composition at the respective stations and sediment stocks. Finally, the concentration of pigments did not change significantly during gut passage. The biomass of live planktonic diatoms in the area of study was estimated to be 2-10 g DW/m2 or 0.2-5% of the total organic content in the top 3 cm of the sediment. It is concluded that this pool of diatoms is largely unaffected by deposit feeders and seems to be unimportant as a food source. It is hypothesised that the input of the spring bloom should be considered as composed of two fractions playing different roles for the benthic ecosystem. One fraction of dead organic material may be utilised immediately, while the fraction of live planktonic diatoms serve as a stable food buffer, which gradually become available to deposit feeders after the diatoms die and degradation starts.  相似文献

Epilithic diatoms are frequently recommended for river biomonitoring, while much less emphasis is placed on epiphytic communities. This study considers use of epiphytic and epilithic diatom communities from the Ra?ka River in biomonitoring. A total of 212 diatom taxa were recorded in both communities. Dominant diatoms were Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki, A. affine (Grunow) Czarnecki, A. subatomus (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot, Amphora pediculus (Kützing) Grunow, Diatoma vulgaris Bory, Gomphonema tergestinum (Grunow) Fricke, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata (Ehrenberg) Van Heurck, Melosira varians Agardh and Navicula tripunctata (Müller) Bory. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was used to detect the relationships between diatoms, some environmental factors and sampling sites. Diatoms of the epiphytic community showed a clearly grouping in relation to the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. Species common to both communities showed a similar correlation with some environmental variables (BOD, pH, NH4+, TP, NO3? and conductivity), with three exceptions (Diatoma vulgaris, Cymbella compacta, and Encyonema silesiacum). Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed correlation between selected environmental variables and diatom indices calculated using OMNIDIA 6.2 software (TDI, IPS, CEE, GENRE, TID, SID, SHE and IDSE/5). Diatoms of the epiphytic community are more clearly clustered in relation to the sampling sites as compared with diatoms of the epilithic community. According to our results there is still “place” in biomonitoring for epiphytic community. The present study highlights the necessity of sampling both epiphytic and epilithic communities because substrate specificity could play important role in biomonitoring.  相似文献

The epiphytic diatoms on plant-remnants in 10 samples collected in July 1951–1957 from 0.25 m depth in Grane Langsø, Denmark were studied. Averages of their relative frequencies are compared with the relative frequencies of epiphytic diatoms from 11.25 m depth with the aid of a Rank-Abundance diagram. The two graphs were very similar suggesting identity between the epiphytic communities from 0.25 m depth and 11.25 m depth. This suggestion is supported by a highly significant correlation between the relatively abundances of species in the communities from the two depths. Also the populations of the common diatom species Tabellaria flocculosa had the same dimensions of the cells in the two depths and on different host plants, and none of the numerous epiphytic diatoms were ever observed in the plankton of Grane Langsø during five years of regular examination. Overall, the results imply that the littoral plant communities and the pelagic waters offer widely different conditions for growth and survival of diatoms resulting in the development of strictly different communities. The difference between epiphytic and planktonic diatom communities are also likely to become fully expressed due to physical separation of the communities in Grane Langsø resulting from its small size and wind protected location surrounded by forests.  相似文献
